00:36sorts of things around the world but I've never come across this one Harry I didn't expect oh my

00:48god I'm so sorry come on Billy if you carry on like this you're killing this dog with kindness

00:56oh you just got me good time's running out here something's got to change so saddle up

01:07fucking bandits beware if this works this will change their lives close the door

01:15cause Mr Hall is she proud of you gets every dog oh you'll have the inches in a minute

01:24oh that's nice every time

01:27testing Graham's skills this week are Staffy's terrifying taste for tyres

01:36he's bonkers isn't he yeah the border collie causing kitchen chaos

01:41if this could be resolved it would mean my anxiety would go down a lot drop yuck and the fur baby

01:48hooked on forbidden fudge he likes to eat his own poo has the dog father bitten off more than he can chew

01:55well I'm in Queensland today and I've driven a few kilometres inland from the Gold Coast and I've come here

02:12to well this is my kind of paradise beautiful views panoramas everywhere it's lovely

02:20you're not wrong grey grey but if you're here I reckon something's gone to the dogs

02:26I'm coming to see a family who live here with two Staffies and one of them is a bit of a problem

02:33nestled in this emerald expanse is mum Alicia's happy place we love being here it's nice and peaceful

02:41we've got five acres so the kids run around nice big block of land where we live it's a generous

02:47slice of heaven and they share it with deserving doggos Luna and Maddie I wanted to rescue a dog

02:54so I went to the local shelter Matt just came up straight away was friendly and I was like yep

03:01he's the one for us and as soon as she brought Maddie home the kids fell for him too

03:06he's always like there to you know give you a cuddle or cheer you up he's just like sweet and loyal and

03:16he just he's gentle did he say gentle or mental because all I see is a daredevil with a death wish

03:28careful Maddie when Maddie gets on a roll he'll never tire of the tires

03:35make sure you go nice and slow bell until he's let the air out on everyone's day

03:41he has popped two quad bike tires he has popped one of Benjamin's bicycle tires

03:48it's a miracle Maddie hasn't been mangled himself

03:52if he gets his head too far under you're going too fast to stop he makes a mistake he falls over

03:57he could like seriously hurt himself obviously the worst outcome is that one day he puts his

04:04paw under first and I run over him Matt could get seriously injured or possibly die if something like

04:15that did happen yeah I'd be absolutely devastated so much for the serenity hey Maddie lucky the dog

04:23father's on his way to put a stop to your stunts so Staffies Staffordshire Bull Terriers got the name

04:29from this horrible spore called bull baiting where they used to set dogs on bulls and they'd sort of

04:37round about so that's kind of where they come from biting bulls fetlocks mind your language Graham

04:45there's kids about I'm Graham hello this is Benji Benji hello Benji call that hello hello

04:51isabel isabel Joshua Joshua nice to meet you guys you too and who's this then this is Matt hello Matt

04:58lovely lad he's got a problem with tires I believe is that right a big problem with tires right really

05:04he doesn't care how big it is kids can you show me what happens when you ride your bikes

05:08Matt he's gearing up for another dance with danger he's biting your tire and he gets his head right

05:16around in front yeah and she's trying to swerve out of the way I'm just glad they're not riding that

05:25quad bar oh boy what are you doing ow that's a hurt sometimes when he goes too close you can feel the

05:36handlebars jerk can you he's put that much pressure on the tire yeah he's bonkers isn't he yeah but do

05:47you know what would be truly bonkers now the main event driving an even bigger vehicle with Maddie

05:53around me and my big mouth the noise of the engine starting is what sets Matt off one wrong move and

06:06this daredevil could end up with more than a bruised ego Matt come here good call Graham time to put the

06:14brakes on get yourself killed you'd be surprised how common it is for people to accidentally run over

06:20their own dog he's a lovely dog but he has no idea the injuries in does he no absolutely none we got

06:28a problem only this is the kind of behavior you would normally see from a herding dog a sheep dog

06:33you know running down a farm track after a youth or something to see in the staff is really unusual we

06:39do have one other little problem the whole way he won't actually get in a car right and if we

06:45ever do manage to get him in and take him for a drive he usually gets car sick all right we'll

06:51better see that then as well oh it's the it's the gift that keeps on giving this dog in the blink of

06:57an indicator Maddie goes from evil Knievel to scared Scooby-Doo oh bless him come on buddy talk about

07:07hangdog ready that's it you're okay I always make at least one of the children come with me they're on

07:15spew duty with a towel to be clear spew duty is an unpaid position yeah we can so let me get this

07:23straight he throws himself under the wheels of moving vehicles and he doesn't think that's going

07:29to be dangerous but getting into the backseat of a car that's the scariest thing ever why is this dog

07:36behaving like this I don't know and I've just got this niggling feeling that I'm missing something here

07:43he gets in the car virtually every trip he's sick yeah why do you think he might be afraid of being

07:50in a car I do have a little theory yeah when Matt was three weeks old he had three brothers they were

07:56all dumped in a cardboard box then he went between a few different shelters my thoughts were that every

08:05time he seemed to get in a car he was going somewhere and it was not nice now that we know

08:11that he had that experience at three weeks old of being abandoned and find himself in a car all

08:16makes perfect sense and the other thing was is he full staffing no so we did get a DNA test all right

08:23and actually the number one breed came up as bull terrier then staffy yeah then kelpie and border collie

08:30ah that's a missing part of a jigsaw in my mind and now it's all coming together for the dog father what

08:37wasn't making sense to me until I knew he was part herding dog right was when you're running around

08:43on your bikes right he's hurting you yeah yeah what he does next isn't like a herding dog he does what

08:50bull terriers do which is well they were trained to nip the ankles of bulls to stop them moving and

08:55he's discovered it's actually quite good fun to sink your teeth into tires then of course it works

08:59because every time he does it the quad stops he's like ah I won so it's a big game so I think

09:05he's playing actually the problem we've got is how dangerous it could be so we've got to put an

09:11end to it there's only going to be one occasion when somebody didn't spot him didn't turn in time

09:16didn't break in time he's a dead dog coming up leave it can graham stop maddie's scary tango with

09:24tires back up the border collie cooking up a kitchen nightmare Ruby shut up and the cocker spaniel with

09:32a passion for poop I like out Archie you know so cute one minute and so disgusting the next

09:39Mattie the stuffy has an appetite for danger the worst thing that can happen is that Mattie can get

09:55killed but nobody could stomach a Mattie Patty the tire chasing is a real worry and that's something

10:02that we've got to fix there's a real urgency to this because I think poor lad he's on borrowed time

10:06so how am I going to do it well it's good fun for him so anything that I put in as an alternative

10:12that's going to be rewarded with something that's fun as well but what could possibly be more fun than

10:17sticking your head under a quad bike aside from you know anything hello mate we're going to give

10:23Mattie a little treat but we're going to get the timing right if he goes too near I'll say leave it

10:28if he doesn't listen I'll stick the brakes on with this yeah if he backs off yeah good boy

10:33something in it for you a little treat yeah aha a high value reward for a high-risk hound well if

10:41you're ready to kick things off Graham's taking control and starting slow good boy engines on

10:49the hardest thing for any action star is knowing when to call it back up leave it come on Maddie

11:18just turn away from those tires and you'll get some of Graham's treats no leave it but if you go

11:25for them leave it no snacks no glory back up

11:32Matt leave it good boy okay

11:41he put up a bit of a fight to start with you know but the secret is always going stages what

11:51you don't do is just get somebody driving straight passing over the best yeah what's this leave it hey

11:58good boy Maddie slowly trading danger for dinner good boy

12:07Matt leave it yeah good boy so the obvious place to go now is it's a rock the quad backwards and forwards

12:20yep yep yep okay literally that far forward and then back again and stop

12:24all right well he's barking but he's not lunging yeah all right and again that's it and back again

12:33good boy hey you come here come here our train

12:39kind of working together as a team now yep yep do what I do and if I'm not throwing myself

12:46underneath the quads wheels don't do that yourself another pearl of wisdom from the dog father

12:52somebody write that down so this morning you were edging it forward that much and he was going for

12:56every tire he could get a hold of yeah whereas now he's been really good we're on the right track

13:00if you find the right method and importantly you find the right way of rewarding a dog

13:06yeah then you're on a winner good boy no

13:10good boy he did really well that's good right better than I thought yeah the good news is your

13:17dog's brill he's almost trained the bad news is it's your turn there with Graham at the helm

13:23Maddie is a changed hound but hand over time means back to bark lunge repeat

13:31leave it leave it right well done that's it and then when he goes all right all right mama give

13:38up good boy treat good boy that's it okay all right there's your line again with Graham I learned

13:47that it's not just about give him the treat it's make sure he's done something right then give him

13:52the treat it was definitely a light bulb moment where I went okay make sure he earns it

13:57good boy Maddie see as easy as that thanks to Graham Maddie's choosing snacks over certain death

14:08and might just be ready to retire from the rubber chasing look at this look at that fantastic

14:16you're lying down good boy hey I think you've cracked it I think it'll take a little bit of

14:23practice but yeah I'll get there absolutely it will what we've seen today has moved you on leaps

14:28and bounds I think yeah you know well Matthew's a fast learner and I am so pleased for this family

14:34because that could have been fatal the only trouble now is I've got to come back and get him

14:39into the car and that could be a different kettle of fish you know

14:43to effectively communicate with your dog you need to think really clearly about what you're saying

14:51when and how are you saying it if you're using your voice make sure your tone is right if we're saying

14:57no make sure it sounds like no and the face is going to match as well dogs are experts at reading

15:05our faces they know when we're happy they know when we're unhappy with them so if you can use your face

15:11to convey great good well done let's have more of that they'll get it they'll read your face they'll

15:17know they're on the right track now you see that look on Graham's face that's how you know he means

15:27business he's still on the Gold Coast and he's picked up another doggy distress signal

15:38Kate and Justin have been together for more than a decade and through it all Border Collie Ruby

15:45has been by their side she has just recently turned 13 we got her as a puppy together we don't have any

15:53kids ourselves so she's our child basically she means the world to us I get quite emotional when I think

15:59about how much I love Ruby her and I have got a really deep connection I get to spend a lot of

16:03time with her we're pretty inseparable but behind that wise old furry face is a very long list of

16:11complaints she's quite reactive to common things that we're doing in the kitchen grating anything with

16:21the box grater opening cans changing the rubbish bin bag using the blender

16:33the usual reaction from Ruby is very very loud barking ear piercing barking yeah what we have

16:40here is the perfect blend for household disharmony Ruby shut up okay be quiet she doesn't respond to

16:48that at all if anything it makes it worse and Kate gets annoyed at me for doing so we tend to have

16:53a little bit of a good cop bad cop thing going on I'm back up all the time Ruby be quiet if this

17:02could be resolved it would mean my anxiety would go down a lot and we could eat whatever we want

17:06Graham's on the gold coast to see aboard a collie who seems to really hate housework Ruby be quiet we tend to

17:19have a little bit of a good cop bad cop thing going on I'm back up all the time so the dog father's come

17:27okay nice to clean things up so this is Ruby is it well you're very meek and mild and quiet at the

17:35moment yeah we've trained as best we can yeah but lately yeah things have gone off the rails a little

17:40bit okay how did all this start initially it started with the ironing board putting up the ironing board

17:46she used to get really afraid like her ears would go down and she'd get very scared looking tail would be

17:50tucked in so to try and help her to not feel scared of the ironing board when I put it down I used to

17:55encourage her to come over and get the big scary ironing board so now oh she used to bite it yeah

18:00and so she started to then bark at the ironing board when I put it away and then what's happened

18:05since the things that started to add to the list coincided with us moving interstate to a different

18:09house so the ironing board's where it all started yes can we see that of course we can uh-oh it's about

18:17hard to get steamy in here and not from the iron

18:24uh-uh oh quiet good girl and if you move it again

18:32oh she doesn't like that does she there's a deep growl there as well isn't there

18:35good girl for the longest time that was it it was just the ironing board yes and then

18:45you moved here yeah it moved into the kitchen basically but we need to see the kitchen stuff

18:49don't we if you want the real show yes graham takes a front row seat and right on cue

18:58oh blimey you're not happy are you i don't know what's louder the blender or her

19:10it's interesting though she's barking at that and then she's looking at me and you and what what

19:15am i meant to be doing here ruby to me looks really confused she's looking at mum looking at

19:21dad looking at me trying to get a bit of a clue like what am i meant to do here what do you want me to

19:25do and and i don't think she's getting any answers it looks to me as though this is quite stressful

19:30for you it does yeah stress me out how does it affect you though uh it annoys me a lot i get

19:35frustrated and i yell at ruby which probably makes things worse and yet you seem such a nice man

19:41so convincing you're bad cop you're a good cop right oh i see and neither of those two things are

19:46working otherwise i wouldn't be here for justine and case their different views are clearly causing

19:52problems in what really it's all intense and poses looks like a very harmonious home the only thing

19:57that seems to work for us is literally removing her from the situation so getting justin to take

20:02her into the garage if i'm making a smoothie well we better go to the garage then yep we'll do what

20:07bloke's doing garages talk about cars sounds good to me just two guys and a dog come on ruby hiding from

20:13a harmless home appliance wow very blokey stuff oh that's interesting if we can hear it she can

20:21definitely that's right and she's not reacting she's she's fine here she's hurting because she's

20:27looked yeah she's doing nothing about it yep okay back in the kitchen justin's serving up one last

20:35surprise look what we have here a grater a grater grating carrots that sets her off that sets her

20:42off you're having a laugh no unfortunately that's a first ruby it's all right it's okay ruby was that

20:54really your best bad cop justin wow and it doesn't have to be carrot it could be zucchini which doesn't

21:01make as much noise but still not happy or cheese cheese i mean what sound does grating cheese make

21:09i mean we're sort of joking about it but it's quite a serious thing i mean you must be on edge all the

21:12time and i am battling health conditions as well so i do have adrenal fatigue and i've got fibromyalgia

21:18right both of them get worse if i get stressed so you're you've got adrenaline going all the time

21:24when you shouldn't have yes so you're already a bit stressed i'm fight or flighty all the time all the

21:29time yeah when you've got a dog that's barking you're thinking there's something really troubled

21:34about my dog and she's very upset and i don't understand it i wish i could help and i can't

21:39that's really stressful the effects i think on anybody would be quite wearing but if you're

21:44suffering from adrenal fatigue you're in fight and flight all of the time this is a really bad

21:50situation for case but the dog father's picked up on something and it might just be the peace

21:56offering this house needs i think we've got to go right back to the beginning for clues to this

22:00right for anybody moving house is pretty stressful yeah and i think that's the first clue right so you

22:06move her anxiety is really heightened i guess at that point as well because she'll have been picking

22:11up on everybody else plus it's different for her you know yeah so because she was heightened the first

22:18time the blender went on or whatever she's like what and she's reacted to that and then you've done your

22:23thing you know which is like it's okay everything's all right so we need to talk about your different

22:27approaches now so bad cop good cop right yeah or probably i would say actually quite nice cop

22:33really not as bad as you think you are and really nice cop right you're never telling her off at all

22:39so that she's like oh okay so this is all right then is it and then every now and again what throws

22:43a spanner in the works dad turns up and goes oh no back in it right and she's like oh oh so this is bad

22:49then ah right but actually at the same time you're also going it's all right done everything's okay you

22:53did that as well right so we're confusing it whilst being a bad cop right so she's like i have no idea

23:00what the humans want in this house yeah all i know is if there's certain sounds that i don't like

23:06i bark then they stop it and that makes me feel better so i've got a bit of a problem on me hands

23:10this behavior has been going on for eight years and it's expanded to well almost everything in the

23:15kitchen so i'm going to tackle the worst thing and for my money that's the blender

23:22the problem with the blender is it's either on or it's off yeah right yeah so the only way you turn

23:27down the volume is by effectively relocating the dog but that worked so that's given me an idea

23:35well i think i've got quite a bit to do here because this is a 13 year old dog who's been exhibiting

23:39this behavior for at least eight years i've got to get justin and kate on the same page as well you

23:45know good cop bad cop um if i can get them communicating with their dog clearly kindly

23:52i think we're going to get somewhere but that's a lot of work to do

23:54on the gold coast ruby the border collie is losing it over anything that whirs rattles or grease

24:10so to get ruby more comfy around the kitchen graham's come up with a revolutionary high-tech

24:16training device that's the secret weapon uh graham that's just a portable speaker it's a portable

24:25speaker onto which i've recorded the sound of your blender ah right it's okay justin i don't get it

24:33either if we start this training with the blender on full bore i just think ruby will be constantly

24:38barking and i don't think we'll get anywhere so we need to be able to turn the volume down on a blender

24:43on a little speaker we can start at volume level zero and gradually increase that volume at will

24:50and that way we're not stressing anybody out least of all the dog and i think we'll get somewhere

24:55if at any point she does react that's when we need to do bad cop it's as simple as no the face

25:02the sound you know not screaming and shouting for me the golden moment so when a dog looks and goes

25:08now that everybody's amped up on graham's plan it's time to give it a whirl all right here we go

25:22uh no no no hey ruby come here

25:36no oops good girl the low volume version of the blender is definitely working i think if we'd have

25:44gone straight in with full volume she'd have been barking her head off we'd been shouting no it's not

25:50the way to go i'm going to turn up the volume again no there's still a lot of noise

26:01no and still a lot of no no but ruby is getting closer and calmer yeah good girl every time i make

26:12it a bit louder she reacts a little bit but then she calms down and she's calming down quicker and for

26:18longer right let's turn that volume up again no come here he's a good girl yeah it's fine good

26:31i know you're a bit jumpy aren't you yeah it's all right don't worry no

26:36oh you're lovely are you hey well i've got that volume it's a decent level now so i think it's

26:47probably time to hand over and let the guys send out the yes and no signals you know what i'm going

26:51to say our turn now it's kate's turn that's quiet too soft and graham's carefully brokered peace treaty

27:00goes out the window good girl good girl no it's a funny old job that i do because i teach people how

27:10to do things for themselves then i have to stand back sometimes bite me lip and hope that they've

27:15really got this and this is where we're at right now no no so i'm looking for them to be really

27:23clear about what's no barking growling and what's yeah good girl i'll be listening to the tone of

27:29voice i'll be watching their faces no good girl good girl that's it good girl ruby good girl you're a

27:43good girl who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks she gets it now it's like right okay so don't

27:50bark because there's nothing to worry about so she's happy they're happy and you know what i think in

27:56one afternoon we've turned their lives around but she's asleep yeah they don't call you the dog

28:01father for nothing well that's true it's just well earned how would you describe the change you've seen

28:05in her it's absolutely massive hold that thought no one's actually turned the blender on yet this is

28:11the moment of truth well that's amazing so thank you very much thank you thanks to graham ruby's gone

28:23from domestic dictator to a lady of leisure and all it took was a hundred no's and one ingenious

28:32invention well cheers cheers well done great here's to gold coast living absolutely fantastic ah the smooth

28:39sweet taste of success

28:45graham's now bound for sydney's northern beaches where there's a pooch whose problem is a bit of a mouthful

28:53i'm on my way to see a cocker spaniel today who's got a predilection

28:58for excrement he likes to have his poo and eat it

29:01four-year-old archie is a fiend for faeces yucky archie archie no

29:16naughty mum kaz and daughter alicia have begged they've pleaded but archie's still dining

29:24a la backyard there's lots to love about archie he's the sweetest little boy he's very cute but

29:32his worst downfall is he likes to eat his own poo yucky drop yuck archie can't help but hoe into his

29:41home brand box it's naughty i feel a bit disturbed by it to be honest

29:48no archie yuck if he's aware that it's there

29:55he will try and grab it straight away yucky just latch onto it and gobble it down

30:01it's a bit mushed mom stop yes please stop sorry darling when archie eats poo i get embarrassed

30:12immediately even if i'm just with him and there's no one else around i still feel a bit ashamed

30:19when archie's on the leash it quickly becomes a sniff and snack safari archie archie we have to be the

30:27poo please everywhere we go we have to be mindful that there could be poo out there that he's about

30:33to lunge on and we know it's not good for him archie no yuck archie no archie you know so cute one

30:42minute and so disgusting the next this is no ordinary mess but the dog father is no ordinary cleaner he's off

30:51like a heap seeking missile what a lovely garden you've got all the lovely smells around here

30:58right the the ocean the bush and all the rest of it you have to choose dog poop surely not when guests

31:04are over oh no oh no look at that the face of an angel breath of a devil i don't need to see more

31:23of that i get it i've logged what's going on we need to have a chat don't we come on you you've

31:31disgraced yourself oh i do get some funny jobs to do don't i it's a sort of funny thing i get it

31:39but there is a serious side to this because there's all sorts of bacteria that can be

31:43in poo it's clearly undesirable and it can be dangerous coming up graham sets out to stop this

31:51stink snacker once and for all archie step away no too nice come on and could a good dose of fomo

31:59convince maddie to take a ride matt if you don't get in that car quick she'll nick your tree

32:12the dog fathers in sydney's northern beaches to cure a cocker spaniel of his car car cravings

32:19and after copying an eyeful graham thinks he's caught a whiff of what's gone wrong

32:25their sense of smell works in a different ways of ours so you and i would go smells like dog poo

32:32he's able to smell the different ingredients he's going oh chicken oh bacon flavoring

32:38he's like oh i'll get in there and find that bit of bacon lovely i'm gonna have to convince him that

32:43yeah i know it's delicious but no right he needs to understand if you step away from the poo

32:49we'll give you something instead i wish i could say i'll get something better instead the actual

32:55fact is it's probably not better in his mind than poo but it's just not allowed we have to do this based

33:02on impulse control right i know you want to but no better not right how do we do it well i've got a

33:09plan so much for going cold turkey marvellous is that graham serving up poo on a silver platter

33:18a truffle of beagle poo

33:25the pièce de résistance a duo of cavoodle and groodle it's delicious

33:30welcome to the dog father restaurant extraordinaire allow me to take you to your table oh thank you

33:41i don't even want to think about the wine list what's this waiter up to

33:48so what i need you to do is every time he goes too close to the poo we're going to say

33:53step away step away from the poo right not aggressive but i mean it you know step away

34:02archie will need to forego a full three courses of gooey gastronomy i need to give him a reason

34:09to do that so i need to reward him i have some treats in my pocket they um they look like droppings

34:18but they're not they're dog treats healthy dog treats hey all right so are you ready to see what's

34:25for entree let's reveal the entree this one kind of ought to be familiar because here's one archie that

34:32you prepared earlier it's archie poo so we now say step away step away a bit clearer than that archie

34:42step away no too nice come on kaz really push it out there archie step away better see if he goes

34:51back for it yeah archie step away good good boy all right good boy archie's quite capable of behaving

35:01really well he's already showing us that but he'll only do it if you get it right let's talk about your

35:06tone of voice because step away it's got to be more step away right now step away step away archie

35:16step away good boy that's better yeah okay now he's wagging his tail so far so good hey so far so good

35:26let's see what he thinks to the main course or as i like to think of it number two

35:30the chef has excelled himself but if kaz can't excel with her commands number two could easily

35:40undo archie's training step away better good boy you see the difference a bit shaky with cast to start

35:46because the tone of voice was all wrong uh as she was saying step away it was the step away it was

35:52going up and that kind of suggests i'm not sure of myself but as soon as she delivered it with that

35:58sternness if you like of like step away that makes all the difference we have for dessert a

36:08duo of slightly moldy treats let's see what you think to that step away very good look at the difference

36:20so far i'm pleased with progress but we've only gone up to those plates of poo one at a time and we've

36:26been static we've stood there what if we walk past all three plates and we're on the move because

36:34that's what the real world is like when you're out in a park minus the plates of course three times the

36:39poo three times the temptation let's go just go really close good boy ah good boy oh a solid effort from

36:51archie and a five-star rating for graham's training well that was brilliant well done archie

36:59here's a smart little cookie smarter than what we thought i think there's been a big difference

37:04between this morning when archie was grabbing any bit of poo he could get hold of and not letting go

37:09despite everybody protesting to now where he's literally just walking past it and it

37:14looks pretty effortless to me good boy good boy archie so i think if they keep it up the future's

37:21really bright and not brown there's no one more passionate about i mean dog training than the dog
