00:22even the biggest bark in town is no match for the dog father
00:32oh your beauty well I've come across all sorts of things around the world but I've never come
00:39across this one Harry oh that I didn't expect oh my god I'm so sorry
00:50come on Billy if you carry on like this you're killing this dog with kindness
00:56oh you just got me good time's running out here something's got to change so saddle up
01:07what are you doing fucking bandits beware if this works this will change their lives
01:14close the door cause Mr. Hall is she proud of you gets every dog oh you'll have me in tears in a minute
01:24oh that's nice every time thank you
01:28testing Graham's skills this week no Louie Louie no a Boston Terrier rolling out the assault tactics on
01:38fences Graham rolls the dice on lucky the Jack Russell and the bulldog who's really launching
01:50herself into television don't change the channel the dog father's on yeah one that's Graham Graham
02:04has had a heavenly summons to the western suburbs of Melbourne he's been called by the angels
02:11specifically Peter and Grace Angel it's not quite heaven but close enough I'm Peter Angel and this is
02:20my lovely wife Grace when your last name's angel love stories sort of write themselves grace is an
02:27amazing person she caught my eye and we got on really well Peter fell in love with grace and
02:34grace fell in love with Boston Terrier cross Louie look at your shoulders give you a massage
02:42Louie's definitely your number one I feel I did call him the love of my life the other day didn't I
02:50it's a love that knows no bounds so when Louie suffered a spinal injury a few years back the angels
02:58gave him the best care that money could buy these are Louie's wheels we got them just to help him move he loves
03:06it Louie may have lost the use of his back legs but don't tell him that he's still full steam ahead
03:12he really didn't care and I don't think that he could be happier he's just a really happy happy dog isn't
03:19he yes you love it so much Louie has very similar qualities to myself both in chairs both stubborn
03:28both annoy grace and people see me in the chair and then they see the dog in the chair you know
03:35like are they related no separate mothers both in chairs one thing is for certain here we go
03:47grace angel has earned her wings you know it has been challenging since his injury I've taken more
03:56of a I guess a carer role okay if that's not stressful enough grace also has to deal with this
04:05when Louie sees a dog on the other side of the fence he'll tend to lunge at the fence and yeah
04:19but his nose against it and you know try to get at the dog I've got no hope of controlling him so it's
04:31really grace that is the one that's trying to defuse those those situations and I think it takes
04:37quite a quite a big like mental toll on you going out on walks with Louie I'm anxious the whole time
04:48I just don't think this level of anxiety from my perspective anyway it's very sustainable and it's
04:54just affecting all areas of my life you're a bad boy Lou don't worry angels your fairy dog father
05:02Graham Hall is on his way Boston Terriers were bred to be little fighting dogs and it didn't really work
05:10they ended up pretty friendly trouble is some dogs didn't get the memo about being friendly and this
05:15little fella's problem is that he's reactive to other dogs and things when he's out on a walk and
05:20because he's in a chair that carries a risk that he could tip over and he could injure himself further
05:26Louie Louie a lot of barking going on Louie Louie Louie I can't open the door buddy Louie
05:43come here come here hey hello hi nice to meet you how ya heat up pizza Graham I mean Graham so I
05:56come in he's a big boy any hello hello who is that Louie hiya hello you're friendly you're not sure
06:04oh we're going that way are we right now let's go come he gets around well yeah hello mate so what
06:15happened to his legs he had a like a spinal spinal injury so operation ensued no days is that right we
06:24did but he didn't make a recovery yeah and he also has then physiotherapy hydrotherapy and acupuncture
06:32okay I've got to ask throw me a number how much do you reckon it he's cost you over the years it's
06:37getting close to probably 80 to 100,000 wow right it really underlines how much you love this dog
06:44doesn't it okay bless oh look he's off right cool blimey he's off like a rocket right Louie Louie Louie
06:56Louie come on I need to get the door Louie Louie Louie come on come on Louie I thought I was here to
07:03see a dog who was reactive on walks but there's actually a problem inside too I mean it's not the
07:09worst reaction to a dog you've ever seen but the complication is he's getting in the way of dad
07:14there's a danger he's going to get under the wheels and if it's his front end that gets badly injured
07:19he can't walk it's kind of an accident waiting to happen isn't it Graham's in deeper than he
07:27expected with this Boston Terrier strap in Louie is about to roll out like a two-wheel firecracker
07:34oh he doesn't hang around does he no and it's not long before they roll straight into enemy territory
07:40the dreaded fence line that's not good Louie come on let's go this way Jack Lanaii so he's quite
08:03reactive with other dogs then very that kind of caught me by surprise does he do that other places
08:08as well then it's not just that fence is it no there are other fences with dogs behind it
08:13on his usual walking route and yeah he'll react in the same way I think because he's not as mobile
08:21as he used to be I think he he tends to yeah not trust I guess strange situations okay so I think it
08:28does make him more reactive so do you think that's because he's feeling anxious I do yes right yeah and
08:36then it makes me anxious so there might yeah might be a bit of a yeah cycle going on yeah could be
08:43that's interesting it occurs to me Grace it does an awful lot on your shoulders yes I'm very
08:51overwhelmed I feel like yeah I should be a better carer oh Grace I'm sure you're doing your best
08:56there's a lot going on here and poor old Grace I think he's just worried sick all the time about
09:04everything really you know there's a lot on her shoulders she's the main carer for Louie she's
09:10obviously caring for Pete to some extent I just think she's just living in this world of worry all the
09:14time it's just overwhelming and I think she's been too hard on herself coming up here we go bye will
09:23Graham bring heavenly harmony to the angels household it's like come on you two for god's sake do something
09:29go to the door the jumpy Jack Russell fighting his own family and the headstrong bulldog who's not a fan of
09:38our show Boston terrier cross Louie is hell on wheels out of the house and a great big roadblock
09:54when he's at home Louie Louie Louie come on I need to get to the door so in Louie's case he could be
10:00more anxious since he was less mobile he can't get out of the way of things he doesn't like
10:05he could be feeling frustrated oh I just can't do things you know that kind of feeling I can't be
10:11sure what I do know is what he's doing ain't good for him and it's not good for Peter and Grace they
10:16may be angels but there's only so much even the divine can take so Graham is breaking the training
10:23into two starting today with that pesky doorbell I've looked around your place that's a remote treat
10:29dispenser it is we could have that in the study we tell him to go in there
10:35which would mean nothing to start with we could introduce a new command go find let's say go find
10:40ka-chum he goes in there gets a treat right then what we've got to do I think is desensitize him to
10:46the sound of the doorbell and I would do that separately if we can get Louie to go into the side room and
10:52stay there willingly long enough to kind of close the door without having to panic I think we've we've
10:58got a solution there first stage Graham's bringing in the big guns Wi-Fi and a treat cannon Pete's firing
11:07snacks into the study via smartphone sorcery but for Louie the treat appears magically when he hears the
11:14words go find we've got a time initially so you're saying go find as that makes it sound yep and then
11:22he's associating the two so yeah have a crack at that go find that's it yeah lovely good boy go find
11:34go find this is a great game I don't know about him but I'm up in a wheel of a time it's quite fun it's
11:47good isn't it glad you're enjoying it boys go find because you're about to do it 47 more times go find
11:54go find that's it in dog training consistency is key so they're taking go find for a spin go find
12:05good boy I'm loving that is this the point where you would close the door yeah by almost close it
12:12momentarily and then yeah don't pop the doggy bubbly just yet that was actually the easy bit the next
12:22stage is to get him used to the sound of the doorbell so that it doesn't mean much to him anymore it
12:27doesn't create this this kind of emergency that he has to get there in front of dad so I've got through
12:34the first part of the training fine second part it could go wrong now all that's left for this plan
12:40is someone with nerves of steel and nowhere better to be cue Grace's cousin Checo all right check I ring
12:49the doorbell please oh here we go right so tempting to do something yes it's really hard not to so what
13:02what we're gonna do is precisely nothing right it's a simple exchange Louie hush those pipes
13:10collect your prize oh he's coming back good boy it's in my head it's in my head Checo could
13:23you ring the doorbell again please apologies Checo entry is currently closed due to ongoing dog drama
13:32okay and again Checo still barking just with a well twist it's funny in it it's turned around it's
13:47like come on you two for God's sake do something go to the door we're getting there okay Checo doorbell
13:53again please oh good boy yeah go on Pete good boy Louie Louie no I'm going to bed you want to go to bed
14:04all right guys let's put it all together doorbell rings Louie goes to the study for a treat while
14:13Pete answers the door no pressure Louie but mum will be watching Grace do you want to join us yeah hi
14:21darling hey Checo's been waiting to use the loo for about two hours now
14:25go find here he comes
14:32good boy clever boy good boy right Louie goes in the study yep he's not in a rush to get back out
14:41again now there's treats to be had yes this could be it Checo Checo hello mate come on in
14:48Checo is in the hall is clear and Grace is all smiles the difference was amazing and I could see
14:57from Grace's face that you know she was pretty wrapped with the results good boy and the fact
15:03that yeah it was all Pete I'm really proud of you Pete thanks I think our training's gone really well
15:12this morning I was really worried that Louie sooner or later was going to end up underneath the
15:16wheels of the wheelchair but I don't think that's a problem now and for Grace I just think it's one
15:22little weight off her shoulders keep practicing it I'll come back and we'll deal with the walking issue
15:28sounds good for now it's a scene of serenity here in Melbourne but up in Brisbane the paws are about to hit the fan
15:38okay first vibe a bit spicy second vibe oh my goodness very very spicy
15:53mum Maria swears that 12 year old lucky isn't always like this well lucky's the strangest dog
16:03when I'm alone at home he's happy in his own space but when family come home
16:09thinks he has to be my protector no one comes between this mother and son relationship hey mom
16:21not even Maria's human daughter Natasha when I try to go near my mom lucky reacts just
16:33instant zero to 100 just the way he reacts is out of control it's not just sibling rivalry
16:43even poor Manuel has to fight for his wife's attention we can never sit down and have a peaceful
16:55conversation and when lucky lashes out it hurts emotionally and physically lucky has hurts I think
17:10every single member of my family he's done the same thing to manual it's really become a big concern for the family
17:24in fact if things get any worse this little terrier could be all out of luck my greatest fear is that we're
17:34gonna have to put lucky down sorry it's not something I want to do I don't want to get to that point but it's it's getting close my mum's my best friend and it just feels like I can't go to her when I need to because of this and I want my mum back
18:01I want my mum back it'll take more than good fortune to fix this Maria's praying for a miracle I feel he's been there through my darkest days I really can't give up on him so it's where to from here
18:13Jack Russell lucky has brought some seriously bad juju into his home hey mom come here my boy every time Maria's family go near her this loyal lap dog lashes out
18:32so the dog father's gonna try his hand at training lucky
18:38good luck Graham you're gonna need it
18:43Maria yeah nice to meet you
18:45he's lucky yeah
18:53not so lucky for me careful Greg right I don't think lucky appreciates the puns
19:02so what would happen if you stand up now and go over to try and give Maria a hug or something
19:09what's that
19:10oh lucky
19:13please
19:18you're gonna sit down I like
19:20I like it
19:21alright
19:22alright okay enough stop leave it
19:27blimey
19:29so what have we got a dog who wards people off
19:33from Maria and when he does that he gets what he wants
19:36because they back off.
19:37They look terrified, understandably.
19:39And then you give him a little tap and a cuddle
19:41and he sort of calms down a bit.
19:44So let's talk about things you've tried.
19:46Well, when he's barking, I take the nearest blanket
19:50and I'll cover his face.
19:51Oh, right.
19:52So he doesn't see the person and doesn't bark.
19:54Could I see that?
19:55Yeah.
19:55How that works?
19:57Looks like it's Natasha's turn to be the bait.
19:59Ah!
20:00Ah!
20:01Ah!
20:01Ah!
20:02Ah!
20:02Ah!
20:02Ah!
20:02Ah!
20:03Ah!
20:03Ah!
20:03Ah!
20:04Ah!
20:04Ah!
20:04Ah!
20:05Ah!
20:05Some heart just calms him down.
20:10He hasn't always been like this.
20:13I honestly remember it getting worse
20:14through mum's, like, cancer treatment.
20:17Oh, I see.
20:19It was about three years ago
20:21that I discovered a lump in my breast
20:23and the results came back positive for breast cancer.
20:30I would be crying, holding my dog
20:33and just feeling the warmth of his little body next to me
20:37brought me some sense of comfort.
20:42Maybe, you know, he just got really attached to me.
20:46It's just the break-up between the family, like, that we can't enjoy each other's company
20:52without him going off his head.
20:53Who'd have thought that a little dog could come between you?
20:55What if you left the house for me?
20:57OK.
20:58All right, boy.
20:59See you just now.
21:00Yeah.
21:01Good boy.
21:02See you later.
21:03When you first see Lucky threatening you, the last thing on your mind is, oh, lovely dog.
21:11There we go.
21:12Bit shaky, but...
21:13Yeah.
21:14Hey.
21:15But when Maria's not in the room, he's actually sweetness and light.
21:19I didn't see this side of you before.
21:20No.
21:21You can see why we love him now.
21:23Yeah.
21:23Good, Vicky.
21:24There you go.
21:25OK.
21:26Good lad.
21:27There you go.
21:28He's all right with that.
21:29I mean, he came up and gave me a little kiss.
21:31Bless him.
21:32I wouldn't have had me face this close to him about ten minutes ago.
21:35Amazing.
21:37Are we sure they didn't swap Lucky out for a body double?
21:39He's a good boy.
21:41This is a difficult situation for the family.
21:43They've got a dog they love, and yet he's splitting the family apart.
21:47It's really easy to see where the problem perhaps lies.
21:50Maria seems to be the common denominator.
21:53We need to change his behaviour, that's clear.
21:55It's got worse and worse.
21:57Nobody's telling him this isn't acceptable.
22:00Understandable, I think, particularly when you were poorly as well.
22:02But now is the time to move on, I think, in life and go, right, now, if he's going to behave like that,
22:07he needs to understand he's lost his privilege.
22:09So we'll do that, but there's something else I think is going to help.
22:12You know when you put the blanket on it, but while the blanket's on him, you're doing this?
22:15We do know that with lots of dogs, if you swaddle them, that they calm down a bit.
22:20So there is something that we can put on him, but the actions are all going to come down to you, my darling.
22:26Yeah.
22:27Are you up for it?
22:29Definitely.
22:29I'll give it my best crack.
22:31That's all I ever ask.
22:32First things first.
22:34Come, Lucky.
22:34Maria's got to grapple with Graham's special calming contraption.
22:39That's an anti-anxiety shirt.
22:43Wow.
22:43Don't you look fancy?
22:45And just look at that anxiety melting away.
22:49It's not a magic wand fix, but it just turns the volume down on the problem, if you know what I mean.
22:54Yes.
22:54That then gives us a bit of access to better behaviour, which we can reward.
22:59And if the training doesn't work, it can always be repurposed into a straight jacket.
23:05In a sec, I'm going to ask Natasha to stand up and just approach her slightly.
23:09When he reacts badly, I want you to say, blown it, because he kind of has just blown it, right?
23:14And we pop him in the bed.
23:15Once he's calmed down on the bed, I'm happy with that, we can bring him back on your lap.
23:20OK.
23:21If he reacts well, he's like, all right, OK, I won't attack.
23:26That's when it's really important to say good boy.
23:29Sounds great in theory, but Lucky's got other ideas.
23:35Loud ones.
23:38Oi.
23:41I've got to be realistic in this case.
23:43How many thousands of times has he repelled somebody with his behaviour?
23:48And I've got one afternoon to turn it around.
23:54And do you know what?
23:56I'm not even sure that my biggest challenge is Lucky.
24:05Maria, bless her, has got to stick to her guns.
24:08Lucky loves Maria with every scrappy inch of his being.
24:23And he's not sharing.
24:27It's OK.
24:28It's OK.
24:28And before the dog father's training has even begun,
24:33Maria's reaching for the tissues.
24:34If Maria's feeling 10 out of 10 anxious when he's on her lap,
24:42you bet your bottom dollar he's picking up on that.
24:45If we're struggling, we could pop maybe a harness and lead on him.
24:48Do you want to do that?
24:49That might make you feel more secure, yeah.
24:51Yeah.
24:51And with that, it's time for the training.
24:57Natasha's going to carefully approach Maria
24:59to trigger Lucky's worst instincts.
25:02If he starts to react badly, no.
25:04Blown it nice and clear, right?
25:06Pop him on the bed.
25:08When he gives up, we can tell him he's a good boy
25:09and you can bring him back up to your lap.
25:12The goal is for Lucky to lay quietly in Maria's lap
25:16while Natasha carefully comes closer.
25:19Let's have a look, see how this goes.
25:20Blown it.
25:21Blown it.
25:23No.
25:25Blown it.
25:25Blown it.
25:26Blown it.
25:28Now, is he being good right now?
25:30Yeah, good boy.
25:31Exactly, well done, there you go.
25:33Good boy, Lucky.
25:35Let's try again.
25:37Blown it.
25:42No, Lucky.
25:44Blown it.
25:47Hey, this is good.
25:49Yeah.
25:49As soon as his paws hit that bed, Lucky's on his best behaviour.
25:56This is amazing.
25:57Looks so good to just see him relaxed and...
26:02Now, if it was me, I'd just leave Lucky there.
26:06But Graham's determined to turn him into the perfect little lap dog.
26:11So, he's rolling the dice on a new technique.
26:15No.
26:16Wait for it.
26:17Give it a second.
26:18Just give it a sec.
26:21Not yet.
26:22You see how you want to stroke him?
26:24Yeah.
26:25You're giving him a cuddle for growling.
26:27Okay.
26:27You see what I mean?
26:28Yes.
26:30Wait for him to come down.
26:32Good boy.
26:33Good boy, Lucky.
26:33Now, you can give him a tickle.
26:34Good boy.
26:35Good boy.
26:36Oh, look what he's done.
26:37He's lying down.
26:40Good boy, Lucky.
26:43All right.
26:44Another little step closer, Natasha, please.
26:46Wait for it.
26:52This is great.
27:02Now, you give a tickle.
27:03Good boy, Lucky.
27:04Good boy.
27:05That's it.
27:06Good boy.
27:07Ah.
27:08When was the last time you were this close to your mum with him on your lap?
27:11Years.
27:12It's been years.
27:13Really?
27:13It's actually been years.
27:14With Graham's help...
27:15Look at that.
27:16This family has finally hit the jackpot with their lucky little terrier.
27:21Oh, that's awesome.
27:22Can you believe it?
27:23I'm so proud of you, Mum.
27:24Aw.
27:25For a lot of people, being able to stand one metre away from your mum while the dog was on
27:29her lap would be just non-event.
27:32I mean, it's nothing.
27:33But not in this family.
27:35You're almost in tears.
27:36You'll have me going in a minute.
27:38Yeah.
27:40Yeah, I'm having a moment myself.
27:42I love your resilience.
27:44I don't...
27:45I think I'll tell you enough.
27:48Aw, Tish.
27:49It's okay.
27:50We've been through so much.
27:53It's really unusual to see a family being torn apart by a little dog.
27:58And it's a nice thought for me, you know, driving away from here, that actually that little
28:03dog, if they keep up the training, will bring the family back together again.
28:07I think there's a tendency as a dog trainer to say, oh, you know, I've seen it all.
28:23You know, I'm really experienced.
28:24I know what's happening.
28:25And I think the more experienced you get, the more you've realised you haven't seen it
28:32all.
28:32I really like the quirky behaviours because you can't just refer to the textbook of how
28:38to do dog training.
28:39I'm not working through a script.
28:41I'm really thinking on my feet and just asking loads of questions.
28:46And before you know it, a pattern comes to light.
28:52You might not use a script, Graeme, but mine says you're going to the Gold Coast to help
28:57out a Hollywood heavyweight.
28:59If you want to prevent violence from happening, you have to predict that it's going to happen.
29:08We see things that other people don't see and we take steps to prevent it.
29:13For more than five decades, Hans has been a security guard to the stars.
29:18I can't share any big names.
29:21Obviously, confidentiality is a huge part of the job.
29:25But isn't that Bill Clinton?
29:28No.
29:29He's a tough nut to crack, but Hans does have a couple of big soft spots.
29:34I share my life with two American Bulldogs, Dempsey and Lacey.
29:41It's always absolutely wonderful being greeted by wagging and smiling and this and that.
29:47And that joy quickly dissipates.
29:50Because you sit down to put on the TV.
29:53Bang.
29:54She's at it like a Tomahawk missile.
30:00Hey, hey, hey, hey.
30:03Lacey, come on.
30:04Lacey is laser focused on any dog who even dares make a cameo.
30:10Not even Hans' expert Hans can stop him.
30:14She sees the movement.
30:15She sees it's an animal.
30:17She wants to get there and fight it.
30:19Hans is fresh out of ideas.
30:21Yes.
30:22And going flat broke on flat screens too.
30:24I've gone through two TVs and I don't know if I'm going to bother buying a third one.
30:30But Lacey hasn't got him completely licked.
30:33This bodyguard is calling for backup.
30:35Graham.
30:36Hans.
30:37Nice to meet you.
30:38Nice to meet you, sir.
30:39Yeah, yeah.
30:40Thank you very much.
30:41Cheers.
30:42Hello.
30:43So who's this then?
30:44This is Lacey.
30:45This is Lacey, yeah?
30:46You're a sweetheart.
30:47Well, we haven't switched the telly on yet, haven't we?
30:48I'm sorry to put you through it, but I am going to have to see it.
30:50But I'm a bit worried about your telly.
30:51I don't want it to get damaged.
30:52Oh, that's OK, Graham.
30:53It's a stunt TV.
30:54It's a stunt TV.
30:55Number two or three.
30:56Let's go.
30:57Oh.
30:58Oh.
30:59Oh.
31:00Oh.
31:01Oh.
31:02Oh.
31:03Oh.
31:04Oh.
31:05Oh.
31:06Oh.
31:07Oh.
31:08Right.
31:09Oh.
31:10Right.
31:11Come on.
31:12Oh.
31:13No, no.
31:14Come on.
31:15Come on.
31:16Ah.
31:17Oh.
31:18She nearly rounded on you, that.
31:19Come on.
31:20That's Graham.
31:21Yeah, you don't need to head but me.
31:22Everyone's a critic.
31:23Ah, ooh.
31:24Wow.
31:25Come on.
31:26Brian.
31:27Yeah, I can see.
31:29It's obviously a nuisance for Hans that he can't just watch the telly in peace, but I think
31:33it's more than that.
31:35I'm actually worried for her.
31:36I mean, that's 240 volts in that telly.
31:39Ah, no, no, no.
31:40It's dangerous.
31:41Oh.
31:42Hey, hey, hey.
31:43Oh.
31:44Do you know what?
31:45I'm going to turn it off.
31:46I think we've seen enough, haven't we?
31:47Well, that's one way to leave a review.
31:50Come on.
31:51That's probably the most extreme case I think I've seen of a dog in the telly.
31:55Is that right?
31:56And what do you think is going on there?
31:58No, I'm not sure.
31:59I'm a little bit confused about the whole thing.
32:02I reckon Hans is a real expert on reading people, but he can't get a read on his dog.
32:09I think he's really struggling.
32:11I saw her round on you once or twice there.
32:13She's like, ah.
32:14She did, yeah.
32:15Have you ever been bitten by her?
32:17Have you gotten away?
32:18I've come close to being collateral damage a couple of times.
32:20Yeah.
32:21Tell you what, this isn't going to be easy.
32:22What I would normally do would be stand between the dog and the screen, because then we're
32:27really communicating.
32:29But I'm pretty sure if we do that, we're going to get bitten.
32:32So half of the tools at my disposal are out the window.
32:35We are in uncharted territory here.
32:38Coming up, the bulldog and the bodyguard tackle training head on.
32:43Good girl.
32:44Oh, yes.
32:45And Grace is still desperate for help with Louie's off fences outside.
32:51Your neighbour's dogs underneath that fence.
32:53What are they?
32:54Maltese, Terriers, yes.
32:55Guess what we've got coming up next.
32:57This will be a test, won't it?
33:03Lacey's more than a bulldog.
33:06She's a one-dog demolition squad.
33:09Her owner, Hans, protects people for a living, but he can't protect his own TV.
33:16I'm thinking this is a guy who's spent a whole lifetime, you know, defusing situations.
33:21And you find yourself in this situation with your pet dog where you can't do anything about
33:26it.
33:27How does that make you feel?
33:29Um, yeah, a little inadequate.
33:31The good news is I do think there are a few things we can do about it.
33:35Training this is tricky.
33:36It's a very extreme case.
33:37And I really don't want either myself or Hans to be stood between her and the telly,
33:42because I think we're going to get injured.
33:43I want to put Lacey on a long lead so that she can't actually get to the telly.
33:48She's like, you're not happy.
33:49What's this?
33:50Are we going for a walk?
33:51No, we're not, I'm afraid.
33:52Hans will be the one to wrangle Lacey, while Graham tries to find her off switch.
33:58The nature of a telly is that there's vision which we can make darker.
34:02We can start with a diluted version of the television and we improve in increments.
34:09If she's starting to escalate, I think we need a word that really tells us just to calm
34:16her jets a bit.
34:17So, easy, you know.
34:19And then, if we see her make a decision not to go for it, it's like, oh, good girl.
34:25Yeah.
34:26The goal here is to dial the TV brightness up while keeping Lacey dialed down.
34:32Starting with next to no picture, just the distracting din of digital dogs.
34:38Right.
34:39Here we go.
34:45Easy Lace.
34:47Good girl.
34:48Oh, yes.
34:49Good timing.
34:50Good girl.
34:51Up.
34:52No, no.
34:53Back.
34:54Easy Lace.
34:55Easy Lace.
34:56Easy Lace.
34:57That's a girl.
34:59Good girl.
35:00Clever girl.
35:01Oh, that's nice.
35:02That's it.
35:03I'll tell you what, why don't we take a seat.
35:06Lacey's lie down might be an early win.
35:09But is this really the time to put your feet up?
35:12I'm going to brighten the image a bit.
35:14Easy Lace.
35:17Luckily, Hans isn't one to let his guard down.
35:21Easy.
35:22That's it.
35:23Easy Lace.
35:24The important thing is if we do put a bit of tension in to move her backwards,
35:28that we give her a chance, we slap it off.
35:31Up.
35:32No.
35:33Back.
35:34Easy Lace.
35:35Good girl.
35:36Good girl.
35:37Good girl.
35:38I'll tell you what's beginning to happen now.
35:40Your voice is starting to be easy Lace, good girl.
35:42Yeah.
35:43You can't really hear a big crumb crosser.
35:45Okay.
35:46Let's keep easy as the easy, that's your first warning kind of feeling.
35:51Yeah.
35:52And then the good girl's a lot lighter.
35:53So it's really clear when she's got it wrong.
35:55Right.
35:56Yeah.
35:57Easy.
35:58Easy.
35:59Yeah, you see the difference?
36:00Yeah.
36:01Good girl Lace.
36:02Good girl.
36:03It's those moments that make the difference.
36:06Yeah.
36:07As Graham increases the brightness, the scene starts to get...
36:10Oh.
36:11Steamy.
36:12Yeah, this is a very active dog by all accounts.
36:14It certainly is.
36:16Easy Lace.
36:17Easy Lace.
36:18No.
36:19No.
36:20Come on.
36:21Good girl.
36:22Good girl.
36:23I mean we're not out of the woods yet, but this is great.
36:28No.
36:29Right.
36:30I'm going to turn the brightness up to Max.
36:32It's the final test.
36:34Don't go losing your head now Lacey.
36:37Here we go.
36:38Uh uh.
36:39Ease back Lace.
36:40Right.
36:41Ease back.
36:43Easy.
36:44Easy.
36:45Easy.
36:46Easy.
36:47That's it.
36:48Easy Lace.
36:49Easy Lace.
36:50Easy Lace.
36:51Good girl Lace.
36:52Good girl.
36:53Lovely.
36:54Yeah, she's never been like that before.
36:58Good girl.
36:59Yeah, it's good isn't it?
37:00It's the first.
37:03Good.
37:04Good girl.
37:05Well, we've gone from a dog who at one point this morning I thought I was going to literally
37:09go through the television to a dog who, um, well, what can I say, has become a fan of
37:15dogs behaving very badly.
37:16From chaos to couch potatoes, balance has been restored.
37:21I just realised I wasn't concentrating on her.
37:23I was watching that program on Sally.
37:25Exactly.
37:26Yeah, so was I.
37:27Yeah.
37:28And she's not doing anything.
37:29Ah.
37:30Now if we can just pry Graham's eyes off his own glorious mug, we could
37:35wrap this one up.
37:36Well, that was a whole episode of dogs behaving very badly.
37:40That was a miracle.
37:41It's a miracle.
37:42Yeah.
37:43I tell you what though, your timing is brilliant.
37:47I noticed that.
37:48As soon as she sits, you're there.
37:50Good girl.
37:51Perfect.
37:52She's got the message.
37:53I really wasn't expecting that we were going to make a lot of headway.
37:57I thought the behaviour was too entrenched.
38:00You know, I was shocked.
38:02I was shocked.
38:03I think life's going to be a lot better for her and certainly better for me as well.
38:07Well, keep it up.
38:08Thank you so much, Graham.
38:09You're welcome.
38:10I appreciate your time.
38:11Look after yourself.
38:12Thank you much, sir.
38:13And you, Lacey.
38:14There you go, girl.
38:15Graham's helped Hans get a handle on Lacey.
38:18But back in Melbourne, there are a couple of angels still waiting for some divine intervention.
38:24Stop.
38:25Stop it. Stop.
38:26To Peter and Grace, Louie isn't just a pet.
38:29You're a good boy.
38:31He's family, wheels and all.
38:33But he's a loose cannon when they hit the street.
38:36Louie.
38:37Louie.
38:38Stop it.
38:39Back.
38:40And it's all become too much.
38:42It's just way too stressful for me.
38:45I think reactivity to other dogs outside is tricky.
38:49It's always tricky with any dog in any situation.
38:52But we've got a particular problem here because there's the danger he can fall over, throw himself
38:57out of his wheels and injure himself.
38:59So there's a real need to fix this.
39:06Graham is back in Melbourne to tackle a big problem.
39:11Last time, Graham settled Louie's beef with the front door.
39:16This time, it's the outdoors.
39:19Four-legged strangers and his arch nemesis, the humble fence.
39:24Grace, I think, sees this problem, walking her dog, as the one that weighs the most heavily on her.
39:30And if I'm going to help her, this has got to work.
39:35I feel bad that it's happening.
39:40Sometimes I think I'm a bad owner, you know, like, yeah, not great in terms of, yeah, self-confidence
39:49and, yeah, that I'm doing a good job, so, yeah.
39:53So, how's he been?
39:55Not too bad.
39:56I've been able to get to the door.
39:57Perfect.
39:58And, like, he enjoys getting the treat as a result.
40:01Magic.
40:02Well, that's a massive tick in the box, isn't it?
40:03Yes.
40:04So, I think we'll get going.
40:05But there's something I'm dying to do.
40:07You've got him attached to the back here, haven't you?
40:09Yes.
40:10So, by definition, you're a long way behind him.
40:13That's right.
40:14He's the locomotive.
40:15You're the first carriage.
40:16Yeah.
40:17So, what we'll do is we'll reattach that just there.
40:20There you go.
40:22And that means we can walk alongside him.
40:24That's why he's the dog father.
40:27Grace now has Louis by the reins and training is officially good to go.
40:33The soccer pitch will replicate the fence that Louis passes daily.
40:37And stepping in as our decoy dog is Wally.
40:42Groodle, gentleman, and certified good boy.
40:46I think the scene is set, really.
40:48Our job is to walk up and down and get him used to it.
40:52Okay.
40:53If he kicks off, we're going to go, well, we're not bothered.
40:55Yep.
40:56Whatever.
40:57Kick off if you like.
40:58Yeah.
40:59Nothing's happening.
41:00Right?
41:01Which is the opposite to what you normally do.
41:02Yes.
41:03Because you're normally rushing to go.
41:04And go in between.
41:05Yep.
41:06And all of that.
41:07Yep.
41:08Off we go.
41:09Now he's realised.
41:10Yep.
41:11Look, he's gone stock still.
41:12Okay.
41:13Right?
41:14All right.
41:15Let me give you a little handle.
41:16Okay.
41:17Here we go.
41:18There you are.
41:19Yours again.
41:20He's like, there's a dog.
41:21There's definitely a dog.
41:22I know there's a dog.
41:23I can smell it.
41:24Good boy.
41:26That's pretty good.
41:27Yeah.
41:28Good boy.
41:29Good boy.
41:30Right.
41:31Well, in that case, we'll walk on.
41:32Yes, let's go, Louis.
41:33Low emotional growth.
41:35Louis is actually getting the memo.
41:38But we need to recast the role of the neighbour's dogs.
41:41You're cute, Wally.
41:43You're just not what we're looking for.
41:45Your neighbour's dogs underneath that fence.
41:47What are they?
41:48Maltese Terriers.
41:49Yes.
41:50Guess what we've got coming up next.
41:51Oh, Maltese Terriers.
41:52Oh, yeah.
41:53Okay.
41:54We'll see.
41:55This will be a test, won't it?
41:56Yep.
41:57That's right.
41:58The only thing scarier than Toby the Terrible
42:00is his sister, Cranky Frankie.
42:05Off we go.
42:07Now, let's see what he does.
42:11Okay.
42:13We?
42:14Let's go.
42:15No, no, wait, wait.
42:16We're not going to go until he's calmed down a bit, remember.
42:19Yes.
42:20And now, look, ease.
42:21That's good.
42:22Yes, good boy, let's go.
42:23They're still making Maltese noises.
42:24He's gone.
42:25I don't care.
42:26Yep.
42:27Great.
42:28You're looking happier and more relaxed.
42:30Mm-hmm.
42:31Therefore, he's more relaxed.
42:32Mm-hmm.
42:33Because we're not making a scene out of it.
42:35Yeah.
42:36He's got nothing to worry about.
42:37Mm.
42:38So, it's reassuring for him.
42:39Yep.
42:40Grace is confident.
42:41Louis is shining.
42:43But so far, he has only heard the enemy.
42:46Time to introduce eyeballs to the equation.
42:49Let's go.
42:50Good.
42:51Good boy.
42:52Come on.
42:54Good boy.
42:55Yes.
42:56Good boy.
42:57Good boy.
42:58Once Grace was alongside Louis, they're working together as a team.
43:01He can see that she's confident and happy.
43:04When we got to the point where we could see the dogs, I thought that was going to be a
43:08big deal.
43:09But, nah.
43:10Not really.
43:11Graham is so impressed with Grace, he's stepping aside to make way for Pete.
43:16And he's also cranked the chaos.
43:19A whole pack of pooches, ready to test Louis' nerves.
43:22Let's go.
43:23Let's go, Louis.
43:24Show us your stuff, buddy.
43:25That's it.
43:26I'll get that.
43:27Let's go.
43:28Oh.
43:29Good boy.
43:30Do you know, he's just not bothered now at all.
43:34Wow.
43:35Good boy.
43:36You're a new dog.
43:37Yes.
43:38It's great, isn't it?
43:39Amazing.
43:40He's just walking beside me.
43:41I can live with that.
43:42Louis has turned a page.
43:45But Grace, she's starting a whole new book.
43:48Watching from afar, you could see, like, quite a transformation.
43:52And you could also see, like, Grace was laughing, she was happy.
43:56So, it was, yeah, it was really good to see.
43:59And I think it's going to bode well for the future.
44:02Well, I think you've done a brilliant job.
44:04So, congratulations.
44:05How is this going to change things for you?
44:07I'll be looking forward to the walks and be less anxious.
44:10So, yeah, I'm excited to keep trying this, yeah.
44:13Yeah, keep practising it.
44:14Yeah.
44:15It's been really good.
44:16Thanks so much.
44:17You're welcome.
44:18Job done.
44:19Come on.
44:20Let's go.
44:21I think you put together today's training and the training that we did inside the house.
44:24And I think I've achieved my aim, really, of just taking the weight off a little bit.
44:28It's particularly nice to see Grace looking proud of herself.
44:30I think she beats herself up because she thinks sometimes that her best isn't good enough.
44:35Well, I mean, she's just knocked it out of the park today, aren't she?
44:45Back in Brizzy, Maria and Manuel are counting their lucky stars.
44:50It's going fabulous since we lost Saul Graham.
44:53He's a lot warmer.
44:55And yes, we're sitting together.
44:57The barking may just be initially.
44:59Blown it.
45:01Blown it.
45:04He settles down a lot quicker that we actually can sit down and have a conversation now.
45:08We so proud of you.
45:10Up on the Gold Coast, Hans and Lacey are happily watching telly.
45:15Not tackling it.
45:17She's a lot calmer now.
45:19And television is still alive and well and functioning perfectly.
45:24She's still reactive, but she won't try to bike the screen.
45:27She'll just run and get close and have a bit.
45:29You can tell me.
45:30Hey, this is cool.
45:32And in Melbourne, he's still got wheels.
45:35But now Louis has brakes as well.
45:38The training has definitely helped me get Louis into a room and out of the way.
45:44I definitely have been able to get to the front door a lot more than what I had in the past.
45:49Oh, hey.
45:50How are you going?
45:51Good, man.
45:52When Louis does kick off at the fence, I do have the tools to know what to do.
45:56This way.
45:57This way.
45:58I'm also less anxious.
45:59Next time on Dogs Behaving Very Badly.
46:04A thrill-seeking staffy who's revved up on rubber.
46:08He's bonkers, isn't he?
46:10Yeah.
46:11The collie cooking up trouble in the kitchen.
46:14Drop.
46:15Yuck.
46:16And a Cocker Spaniel with a Beauchamp for poo-poo.
46:20Aww.
