00:00Champ Holyfield the WBA junior heavyweight title holder that is coming up a little bit later on Holyfield the first of the American Olympic class of 1984 to win a world title Evander Holyfield ironically received the most publicity because of a defeat a loss in the most talked about fight of the 1984 Olympics.
00:30This the scene in Los Angeles in the light heavyweight semifinals Holyfield going against Kevin Barry of New Zealand suddenly the referee set to break but Holyfield let loose with that ferocious left hook and Barry went down and was counted out Holyfield said he did not hear the referee's command.
00:48This had been a furious bout with Holyfield apparently wearing down Barry after a short discussion Holyfield was disqualified thus denying him the opportunity to fight for the gold medal for Holyfield a difficult ending to what had been one of the most promising Olympic stories.
01:07Perhaps the top boxer on the United States team he had been a devastating fighter throughout the tournament.
01:15Holyfield though literally disappointed was the model of decorum handling the setback extraordinarily well a setback precipitated by this left hook that caught Kevin Barry a powerful blow that ironically cost Holyfield the bout.
01:33Holyfield so it was Kevin Barry's arm raised in victory and then Barry showed his respect for Holyfield with this sportsmanlike gesture.
01:48Thus it was Anton Yusipovic of Yugoslavia going on to win the gold but the International Olympic Committee virtually admitted the unfairness of the disqualification.
01:57And they awarded Holyfield the bronze medal amidst much controversy and Yusipovic gave Holyfield his due.
02:05Afterwards the interpreter having we're talking translating for him he said he didn't feel like he was really the gold medal winner because he didn't face me.
02:16And he said he felt like I was the best and I was the guy that he had to be.
02:19So it made me feel good by him expressing that point.
02:23Following the Olympics Yusipovic returned to his hometown of Banyoluka, Yugoslavia where he completed his army training.
02:33He is a hero to the people of Yugoslavia.
02:37Anton still boxes but only enough to keep fit although he does intend to compete at the European Championships later this month in Milano, Italy.
02:47At the moment he is spending much time at home and often reflects about those glory days at the Olympics, surprisingly winning the gold in a division that included Evander Holyfield.
02:59In Los Angeles, Holyfield was the best boxer on the American team, which has been proven in his professional career where he has won a world title.
03:18I hope he keeps the title and receives all that goes with it.
03:21I expect to turn professional after the European Championships.
03:39Then another encounter may be possible to finally decide whose gold in fact it was.
03:44Well, I would love that as a situation where that, you know, I would give up my belt just to fight for his gold medal.
03:59We're looking at Evander Holyfield's dressing room here at Caesar's Palace.
04:05But let's switch now to the dressing room of Ricky Parkey.
04:09This looks more like the winner's dressing room.
04:13There are sisters galore in here.
04:16Ricky Parkey's family here, his sisters, his fiancée is here.
04:20How do you tolerate all this minutes before a fight?
04:24Look at him.
04:28Ricky Parkey reminds you of the Willie Stargell thing some years ago with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
04:35When Willie and the other Pirates said, we are family.
04:39Well, this family is from Tennessee.
04:43And Ricky, of course, is going to be in Ohio much of the time.
04:48After looking at this, you'll get to understand this enthusiasm a little better.
04:54Don't it make you want to go home now?
05:08Don't it make you want to go home?
05:11All God's children get weary when they grow.
05:15Don't it make you want to go home?
05:19Don't it make you want to go home?
05:21I was born in Morristown, 1956.
05:27Eastern Tennessee town at the foothills of Smoky Mountains.
05:31I love coming home, going out in the world and accomplish something.
05:35Like I'm going out and growing up, made something of myself, made my parents proud.
05:41I love bringing it home to them.
05:42My mother, she's the love of the family.
05:50She keeps the family together.
05:53She's like a chicken over her hands.
05:56I mean, a chicken over the love of the chicken and everything.
05:58We step outside, she'll be constantly listening, constantly looking out the window, peep and see if you're all right.
06:05My dad taught me everything.
06:08The way of life, to get along with people.
06:13You don't have to be strong.
06:14You don't have to beat everybody up to get along with people.
06:17You don't have to be afraid of people.
06:19He taught me understanding.
06:22I've got three sisters.
06:23The youngest, the most beautiful one.
06:28I named her when she was a baby.
06:30When she came home, I thought it was a doll baby.
06:32Her name stuck with it forever.
06:34And when you see her, you will see why I call her doll baby.
06:37Floa, my second sister.
06:40I'm very proud of her because she is a career woman.
06:42And I'm also very proud to say that I started her in her career.
06:46Dorothy, my oldest sister.
06:48She's a great example for us for going to college and accomplished great things.
06:52She gave us want and hope.
06:55She's also the one who taught me how to fight.
06:57When Rick was during a hike, we took him to the playground.
07:00And this little boy kind of pushed him around a little bit.
07:03So we took him home and practiced him up for a week and took him back.
07:07And Rick's been defending himself ever since.
07:11And after tonight, if he loses, he's got to come home and face me.
07:15And that is serious.
07:17Toby, my son, looks more like my father.
07:20He's got my father's freckles.
07:22He's a very strong bully kid.
07:24He's built like me.
07:25We have a very unique and special relationship.
07:29He cherished the grounds I walk on.
07:32When I speak to him, he don't look away.
07:35He looked dead in my eyes.
07:36He looked deep in.
07:38So when I tell him something, I got to tell him the truth.
07:41I got to speak to him from my heart.
07:42We speak to each other from heart to heart.
07:44I understand him because he was just like me when I was growing up.
07:48Since I know how hard life can be, I'm trying to establish so that my family do not have to go through the same things I did coming up in my boxing career.
08:01So I'm establishing a way so they be financially secure and myself financially secure.
08:08Because I don't want the pressures and the worries of next month's bills.
08:12So I'm fighting hard for that now.
08:14And my sister said for me, if there's something in life you're going for, go after it.
08:19Don't let nothing start to you.
08:21If you know, you give you all you got and fail, great.
08:25If you know, you give you all you got and succeed, more power to you.
08:38That's Ricky Parkey, just moments away from the fight scheduled against Evander Holyfield.
08:44And of course, the question is, is he just being used now?
08:48Is he a stumbling block?
08:49Is he an opponent that the people who are handling Evander Holyfield feel that, well, that Evander is capable of handling?
08:58Is there a danger as we stand here with Evander Holyfield that a guy like you, undefeated, the attention of the world focused on you?
09:06You're the bright and shining hope.
09:08Is there a chance you could be overconfident for a fight like this?
09:11Not at all.
09:12I don't take a fight too lightly.
09:15I go in and take every opponent as a champion and to take advantage of my situation for us, using everybody as a stepping stone to get where I want to go.
09:25Where do you really want to go?
09:26And how do you tolerate this here?
09:29Well, right now, Parkey is my main concern, defeating Ricky Parkey.
09:34And after that, then I have to think about it.
09:37Okay.
09:38I want you to think about this young man, the man who was denied the Olympic championship.
09:43Let's get to know him a little better as we visit Atlanta, Georgia.
09:51As Evander Holyfield and his son Evander Jr. pull up to his reserve spot at Ken Sanders Buick in suburban Atlanta, Georgia, well, he looks, frankly, like a businessman.
10:01Not so much like a world boxing champion.
10:03You see, Evander has an interest in Sanders' business.
10:06He's trying to learn all he can about the car business, just the same way that Sanders has an interest in Holyfield's business.
10:13You see, Sanders helped sponsor Holyfield as an amateur boxer.
10:16Evander didn't forget it.
10:17After his popularity soared following that provocative disqualification at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles,
10:24Ken Sanders found out that he was going to be the man who would be managing Evander Holyfield.
10:30He found out in an extraordinary way.
10:33I read the paper, Sunday's newspaper, and they're interviewing Evander and talking about his disqualification.
10:42And they asked him what he was going to do.
10:43And he made the statement, well, you have to talk to my manager, Ken Sanders.
10:48And I says, I can't believe this.
10:50He had never said to me, we had no contract, that I was going to handle it.
10:56Ken Sanders is a great businessman, and most of all, he had my best interest in his heart, and I know that.
11:05And by him not knowing anything about boxing, it really didn't make any difference to me,
11:09because I know about boxing, and it's up to me to get out there and to fight.
11:13But I need somebody with a sharp and business mind to help me manage my money, and that's the man for me.
11:21Evander Holyfield's success in boxing, together with sound financial management, have given him security.
11:29His wife, Paulette, son Evander Jr., and daughter Ashley are very comfortable in their home in suburban Atlanta.
11:36They picked out a site for a new home, too.
11:38Evander knows it takes a special kind of woman to help raise his family and lend strength
11:42at a time when he's concentrating on trying to achieve high goals as a boxer.
11:47You have to be a strong person to put up with a professional athlete.
11:52I got it, I got it, I got it.
11:53I'm not home all the time, and that I do have two kids, and it takes someone very special to have two kids
12:01and to be able to have a person such as I go out of town and meet your eye all the time
12:07and just surround a lot of things.
12:10I feel like to be a wife or an athlete or someone that's in a limelight that you have to be very strong, don't it's not a marriage.
12:20It's not like a lot of pressure is on me, but it's that, it's, you know, I feel like I'm a single parent sometimes.
12:28And when he, when, like Evander, when Lily Evander, he does something I think is so great, you know, and I'm so proud of him,
12:38I want his daddy to feel the same way about him, you know, and I want him to be there to be able to share it,
12:44the feeling, you know, that I have with his son.
12:46In this locker room, this man and his trainer, Lou Duva, watched that stinker of a fight that you all just saw,
12:55and both say they saw nothing that impressed them or scared them.
13:01Back to ringside, Marvin Ferdie.
13:03All right, Dave, and here in Las Vegas, you get the idea there has been as much attention focused
13:09on the Battle of the Boxing Alphabet War as there has been on the upcoming fight.
13:15I never do this to you, Marvin, so you have to give me the privilege of doing and interrupting you one time in eight years is not bad.
13:21The public, Showtime, top boxing people are all thrilled about the honor that you have gotten this week,
13:28and I want to share that with the public, not Time Magazine, not Sports Illustrated,
13:32but the clarion of truth, the arbiter of elegance in the United States,
13:36the Rolling Stones has elected you one of the top 20 hottest properties in the United States.
13:42What does all that mean, Marvin?
13:43We've been waiting all week for this, Fernie.
13:46What it means is this.
13:47It came down to myself, Larry Bud Melman of the David Letterman Show, and Dr. Ruth.
13:53And a close vote, yes.
13:55Well, from that exalted high of celebrity to them,
13:58let's come back down to the mundane world of boxing you were saying.
14:01So nice of you to mention that.
14:03Thank you so much, folks.
14:04Yes, getting back to the situation here in Las Vegas, as you know,
14:09Evander Holyfield is the WBA junior heavyweight champion.
14:13Ricky Parkey is the IBF cruiserweight champ.
14:17Now, about a month ago, the state of Nevada withdrew from the WBA
14:22because the WBA recognizes fighters from South Africa.
14:27So the WBA declared that this is not a title fight, although they would not strip Holyfield.
14:34Thus, if Holyfield wins, he would take Parkey's cruiserweight crown.
14:39But if Parkey wins, he does not win the WBA title.
14:43The WBA title then would be vacant.
14:46Want to clear this up, and we have these very careful notes in front of us.
14:49Now, the latest today is a WBA representative said the WBA has suspended all its ties
14:54with South Africa, and the Nevada State Athletic Commission says
14:57it will vote later this month to put the WBA on probation
15:01while allowing it to sanction fights and appoint officials in Nevada.
15:05So they continue to go round and round.
15:08Holyfield said, though, if Parkey wins, he will give him his championship belt.
15:14And an explanation of how it all happened.
15:16Right.
15:16Okay, and here comes Evander Holyfield, the WBA junior heavyweight champion,
15:24and he is making his way toward the ring.
15:29Evander Holyfield, who won his title in only his 12th professional fight
15:35off that 15-round decision over White Cowie last July
15:40in Holyfield's hometown of Atlanta,
15:43one of the stirring fights of the year.
15:46Holyfield managing to survive the early barrage
15:49and then came on strong to dominate the later rounds going on to the split decision victory.
15:55At this moment, I think Cowie has other thoughts on his mind
15:59coming off that wild decision in the early about against Ozzy Ocasio.
16:04And now Ricky Parkey is making his way with his son, Toby, who you met earlier,
16:13holding the IBF Cruiserweight Championship belt.
16:17Ricky Parkey on his way toward the ring out of Morristown, Tennessee,
16:24a record of 19-4, 12-by-knockout.
16:30He won the IBF title last October, stopping Leroy Murphy in the 10th round.
16:38So Holyfield and Parkey are closing in on fight time.
16:48We talked with both earlier and asked about their strategy.
16:53Well, I would use my left hand on Ricky Parkey and double jabbing and cut the ring off
17:00and pressuring him and pressuring him so much in the early round
17:04that in the middle round that I would be able to take him out.
17:07We don't say how we're going to do it.
17:10We ain't going to show our hand.
17:12We ain't going to show our ace in the hole.
17:14So we ain't going to show you no corners or nothing like that.
17:17So we won't say.
17:19We'll show you a sign.
17:21And you remember what I told you about that, the slam jam.
17:23So that's on the end of the set.
17:27And Ricky Parkey has entered the ring.
17:32Ricky Parkey, who does have a big punch, the overhand right.
17:38And will snap off the jab occasionally.
17:42Holyfield on the other hand, fast for Big Band,
17:44tries to use that speed and quickness,
17:47and we will race to the ring.
17:49Here is Chuck Hall.
17:50For the next bout of the evening,
17:53the judges are Frank Cairo,
17:55Michael Gliena,
17:57and Cindy Barton.

18:06Flip Polanski, and James Game.
18:15Ladies and gentlemen,

18:18Mr. Davey Pearl.

18:50and the challenger in this contest.
18:53Ladies and gentlemen,
18:54here is Evander Holyfield.
19:03And in the red corner,
19:05fighting out of Morristown, Tennessee,
19:08weighing 187 and one-half pounds.
19:10His professional record consists of 19 wins,
19:14four defeats,
19:15with 12 KOs.
19:17Introducing
19:18the IBF
19:19Cruiserweight Champion of the World,
19:22Ricky
19:23Parky.
19:24Ricky Parky
19:39and Evander Holyfield
19:40getting sacked.
19:42Referee,
19:43a veteran of many,
19:44a championship fight,
19:45Davey Pearl.
19:46Let me remind you once again,
19:51rules we went over.
19:53Pay attention to me.
19:54Look at me.
19:55Come on,
19:55look at me.
19:56Remember.
19:57Davey Pearl not dissatisfied
19:59that Ricky Parky
20:00was looking in his direction
20:01as you check out the IBF rules.
20:04Scoring out the 10-point must,
20:06handled by the three judges.
20:07And the three-knockdown rule
20:11not in effect.
20:13There is a mandatory eight count.
20:15The towel of the tape
20:16showing the reach advantage
20:18for Holyfield.
20:26Scheduled for 15.
20:28And Parky with the wind-up
20:30going right at Holyfield.
20:32He threw that left.
20:33It's the right hand
20:34that you've got to watch with Parky.
20:36Parky throws a strange
20:37arching, looping right hand.
20:39The one that knocked out
20:40Leroy Murphy.
20:41He's opening up with action
20:43right from the opening belt.
20:47And Holyfield getting the right hand in.
20:50There were many who felt
20:51that Parky would look to stay away,
20:53but he comes out at Holyfield.
20:58These are two champions,
20:59no question about it.
21:00And they've come out to fight
21:01from the opening belt.
21:04Here in Las Vegas,
21:06the only betting proposition
21:07you could get on tonight's fight
21:10concerns whether it would last
21:11four rounds.
21:12A $100 bet.
21:14The fight won't last four.
21:15We'll pay $150,
21:16while it takes $190 to win $100.
21:19But the fight will last four.
21:21Then four rounds,
21:22showing a lack of confidence
21:23in Ricky Parky.
21:25Would you go over that again
21:25along with the IBM, ABC rules,
21:28and WBC?
21:29Oh, he just got hit
21:30while he was in a break.
21:31Parky just got hit on a break.
21:35He kept looking at the referee,
21:36faking out Holyfield,
21:37and then threw a right hand,
21:39which did not land.
21:40Ricky Parky coming in
21:42with a bag of tricks.
21:44He's got that wild right
21:45we talked about.
21:46You'll see it all night long.
21:48He throws a looping,
21:49long, long right hand,
21:50and somehow it seems to hit.
21:52Now the plan set out
21:57by Georgie Benton
21:58for Holyfield.
21:59Strong right hand
22:00from Holyfield.
22:02Goes to jab, jab, jab
22:04in order to take
22:05that right hand away
22:06from Parky.
22:07Make him block the jab,
22:09and therefore not throw
22:10the right hand.
22:12Holyfield able to double up
22:14with the left.
22:18Good start,
22:19in contrast to what
22:20we saw earlier
22:21between White Cowie
22:22and Asi Acasio.
22:24People discussing
22:26the scoring of that battle.
22:28We're still hoping
22:29to talk to one of the judges
22:31with Acasio somehow
22:32taking a majority decision.
22:35An adventure
22:35into science fiction
22:36when it came to that.
22:41No such problems here.
22:42Both men are trying
22:43their level best
22:44in the first round.
22:44They end it right here.
22:45Good right hand by Holyfield.
22:46Keep your punchers up,
22:56says the referee,
22:57Davey Pearl.
22:58And Holyfield right on target.
23:03And close that distance.
23:06Holyfield willing
23:07to fight in close.
23:10Nice left hand by Holyfield.
23:11And again the left got in.
23:16Final seconds
23:16of the first round.
23:20Holyfield scoring
23:22with lefts and rights
23:24in this first round.
23:25How you doing son?
23:40You're great.
23:40All right?
23:41I'm good.
23:41Okay, you're moving around
23:42and I'm good.
23:43Don't let him back you up
23:43too much now.
23:44You got to make him back up
23:45for you, see what I mean?
23:46You want him to carry this fight
23:48to you all the time, okay?
23:49All right?
23:50Stay close to him
23:51if you have to, all right?
23:52Don't give him too much range
23:54to punch at you.
23:54He's a little taller than you.
23:57He's a little taller than you.
23:59Okay?
24:02Holyfield on the ropes
24:03lands a long right
24:04and falls right into parking.
24:06Now his technique
24:07is to throw as many jabs
24:08as he can.
24:09Get in close
24:09and at the closing bell
24:12you see
24:12this is what wins
24:14a round for a fighter.
24:16Effective punching
24:17on the part of Holyfield
24:18all the way to the bell.
24:19Carry your hands good enough.
24:20Carry your hands good enough.
24:21Get those punches.
24:22George Patton and Lou Duva
24:23in the corner
24:24of Amanda Holyfield.
24:26Trainer Sleva Robinson
24:27in the corner of Ricky Parkey
24:28had said that Parkey's
24:29awkward style
24:30would confuse Holyfield.
24:33Parkey came out
24:33unleashing
24:34with that looping right hand
24:36but there was no confusion.
24:37Holyfield
24:38able to battle back
24:39and did hurt Parkey.
24:45Parkey fighting back.
24:47He's got a bulldog
24:50in there today
24:50as Holyfield
24:52Parkey is not taking it lightly.
24:54He just comes battling
24:55right back every time
24:56he gets hammered.
24:57But the more effective
24:58punching is being done
24:59by Holyfield right now.
25:03This is for the
25:04IBF
25:05Cruiserweight Championship.
25:08However, Holyfield says
25:09if Parkey wins
25:10he will give him
25:11his WBA
25:12Junior Heavyweight
25:14Championship belt.
25:16Marv Albert
25:16with the fight doctor.
25:18And Dave Diles
25:19from the Sports Pavilion
25:21Caesars Palace,
25:22Las Vegas.
25:29Meaningful punches
25:30being put in there
25:30by both men.
25:31They're standing close.
25:32There's no effort
25:33to get away.
25:33Look at Parkey
25:35work away.
25:40Combination by Holyfield.
25:47Both men taking turns.
25:49Holyfield with a slight edge
25:50because of the
25:51effectiveness of the punches.
25:58It's past the halfway mark
26:00of this second round.
26:03Parkey is a punching machine.
26:10Look at this.
26:17Holyfield right back
26:18and connected with the right hand
26:20and he has Parkey hurt.
26:30And here's Parkey back.
26:31Two straight right hands
26:33of the kind
26:33he wants to land
26:34right on Holyfield.
26:36Holyfield getting careless
26:37after that exchange.
26:39Remember this right hand
26:40drop, Leroy Murphy.
26:46And very sharp punches
26:48being landed
26:49by Evander Holyfield.
26:51Particularly impressive
26:53off the combination.
26:54Parkey taking some devastating shots.
27:04Very low blow
27:05by Parkey on Holyfield.
27:07And that is the end
27:18of round two.
27:24And Ricky Parkey took a batter.
27:28The second round in contrast
27:30to the reaction from the
27:31earlier in the bout between
27:33Kali and Ocasio.
27:37This is almost nonstop
27:38punching.
27:39If Parkey wasn't punching,
27:40Holyfield was an excellent
27:41round.
27:41Evander's half of that give and
27:43take.
27:55You see right now, those right
27:56hands that were landing were
27:57doing a lot of damage.
27:58It would have normally been a
27:59close round except for the
28:00effectiveness of Holyfield's
28:01punches.
28:02For the getting back to the
28:03Ocasio-Cahwee fight of that
28:04disputed decision.
28:05Ocasio winning by a majority
28:07decision in a stunner over
28:08Kali.
28:09We made the request to talk to
28:11one of the judges, but the
28:12chairman of the Nevada State
28:14Athletic Commission, Dwayne
28:14Ford, will not allow the
28:16interviews.
28:17Wisely so.
28:18Well, I don't know about that.
28:20Wisely from his point of
28:20his point of his point of
28:21his point of his point of
28:22his point of his point of
28:23his point of his point of
28:24his point of his point of
28:25his point of his point of
28:26his point of his point of
28:27his point of his point of
28:28everything that's a good
28:30about.
28:52Back to the real actually
28:53where two champions are laying
28:54it out.
28:55This is round three.
28:55What does your scorecards
28:56show?
28:57Just watch, it just comes from left field.
29:00There it is.
29:05And Parkey attempted to throw it right at the start.
29:09Remember Ricky Parkey, the man who came up with an eight-second knockout of Broderick Mason back in December of 84,
29:15and he went right at Holyfield as the bell went to start the fight.
29:21Holyfield has no easy task today.
29:24Not only is Parkey putting in a lot of punches, but a lot of them are zinging in low,
29:28which is going to sap the strength of Holyfield if this continues at this pace.
29:34Burrell has not worn either fighter as yet.
29:36And Holyfield again, shaking, Parkey.
29:54The legs buckled, Parkey going down.
29:56That is time left for the run as Navy Pearl will count it.
30:05Ricky Parkey indicating with the motion of the right hand that he's going to try and throw the big right.
30:12That's what he told us earlier.
30:14Let's see.
30:14And winked at Holyfield like saying, well, you got the better of that.
30:17His legs are still under him, but they're jingling and jangling.
30:23He doesn't have good control of his legs.
30:27And Holyfield just teeing off with combinations.
30:31Now he goes Parkey for the second time.
30:33The three-knockdown rule is not in effect under the IVF rule.
30:38And certainly he is in bad shape this time.
30:42Burrell's going to have to make a quick decision.
30:45This next series of blows.
30:48Coming up on 30 seconds to go third round as Holyfield is looking to finish Parkey off.
30:56And that is not the knockdown.
31:00That was a slip.
31:02And Holyfield comes right after Parkey, who has nothing.
31:05And that's it.
31:08It's over.
31:13Evander Holyfield has stopped Ricky Parkey in round three.
31:20So Evander Holyfield is now both the WVH heavyweight champion and the IVF cruiserweight champ.
31:30The time of the knockout, 2.44 of round three.
31:34An impressive performance by Holyfield, who had his hands full for all three rounds.
31:39Parkey, not at all an easy opponent, but he just, the devastation of his punches,
31:44they were landing accurately, crisply, and his game plan just paid off for him.
31:49Ricky Parkey in a valiant performance, but he could not really stand up to a performer
31:54that was as hot as Holyfield was tonight.
31:56So, Evander Holyfield, the 24-year-old out of Atlanta, Georgia, makes it a record of 15 and 0.
32:0611.
32:07High knockout.
32:10The ringside physicians checking out Ricky Parkey.
32:13That made up for the 10 rounds that we saw before.
32:17That made up for the 10 rounds that we saw before.
32:20My colleague, Dr. Dal Rovio, who said that made up for the 10 rounds we saw before.
32:24So at least the doctors have the right opinion in the Las Vegas Commission.
32:28Referring to the Kawi Ocasio sleep-a-thon that was awarded to Ocasio in an incredible majority decision.
32:37And if there is any depressing thing to this win today, is Holyfield going back to his room
32:41thinking, oh my goodness, I'm going to have to face Ocasio instead.
32:46All right, set for the official announcement.
32:49Let's go to the rings.
32:49Ladies and gentlemen, referee Davey Pearl stops the bout at 2 minutes, 44 seconds of the third round.
32:57The winner by a TKO and new IBF Cruiserweight Champion of the World, Evander Holyfield.
33:10Evander Holyfield at 2.44 of round number three.
33:16So Evander Holyfield stopping.
33:20Ricky Parkey, Dave Dials is alongside Evander.
33:23Let's go to the ring, Dave.
33:24All right, I'm going to get Evander Holyfield to turn around here.
33:30So many times in the ring afterwards, a man is wont to say, he never hurt me.
33:36I never felt a thing.
33:37I knew I had him all the way.
33:39You can't say that, can you?
33:40No, I cannot say that.
33:41Ricky Parkey came out, and he was tough, and he confused me a lot quicker than I took him to be.
33:46So the rounds that I went there, I worked every minute.
33:51You thought he might run a little bit, didn't you?
33:54Yeah, I was looking for him to move a lot, but he didn't move as much as I thought he would.
33:58He did hurt you a couple of times, sting you anyway.
34:01Would you allow for that?
34:02Well, yeah, he hit me with some clean shots, a couple overhand rights.
34:06You know, I could like that.
34:07He had good power.
34:08Any surprises?
34:09No, it wasn't no surprise.
34:10I was expecting a tough match at Ricky.
34:12What about the second round?
34:14Well, I really can't remember how I knew I was in there just working hard.
34:20Were you hurt?
34:20Oh, no, not at all.
34:21I wasn't hurt at all.
34:23Lou Duva is here, and I have to bring you in.
34:26You opened your mouth very quickly, and tell him what you said.
34:30The next heavyweight champ of the world.
34:32This guy here is going to go right down.
34:34It's just a matter.
34:35He's going to clean up the life.
34:36The cruiser weights first, then from there, there's no telling how far he can go.
34:40And this is the man who took it to Sunday paper, Ken Sanders, and said, I guess I am his manager, right?
34:46Yeah, I guess so.
34:47I'm glad.
34:48He's a great person.
34:50The two of you have a great friendship.
34:54So many times in boxing, there are talk of opportunistic managers or people who take advantage of other people.
35:00That's not an uncommon story in boxing.
35:03That's not the type of story you two are writing.
35:07Well, it's, you know, the Lord blessed both of us.
35:09We're both born-again Christians, and, you know, I think he led us together, and we love each other very much.
35:14Who's next for you?
35:16Who do you want to fight?
35:17Really, I'll leave that up to my manager here, Ken Sanders, and Lou Duva, the matchmaker, to set up my opponent.
35:24Well, you've got Ocasio next.
35:26What did you think of that?
35:27I really wasn't watching this stuff.
35:29It looked like it was a pretty tough match for us in the dressing room, but I was busy trying to get myself together for Ricky Barker.
35:37Well, Wayne King is going to make a great comeback with waltz music after that fight.
35:43We'd hate to bat him here.
35:45It's been nice after a fight.
35:46He can smile.
35:47Well, as bad as the first fight was, the second fight was just that great.
35:52Ferdy, don't you agree?
35:53That couldn't be better said, Dave, because that first one was a sleeper.
36:00It's the next thing to anesthetic, but that one, that second one woke you up.
36:04And I think as far as championship fights go and the quality of two champions letting it out and letting it all go out,
36:10that had everything you expect, almost like Hagler Hearns, where two guys come out and really go at each other.
36:16I think that was a brilliant, brilliant and good night for Holyfield, and certainly Parkey had no disgrace.
36:21He just got hit.
36:22As we see, the punches were with such accuracy by this time.
36:27By this time, Holyfield had worn out Parkey, and he had no defense.
36:31He was strictly getting creamed, and there was no reason for him to remain on his feet.
36:36And that was the first knockdown.
36:39Ricky Parkey then gave the indication that he's all right, but obviously he was not all right.
36:45And Holyfield went right at him, and finally Davey Pearl stepped in, and the fight concluded at 2.44 of round three.
36:54Vander Holyfield, now both the WBA junior heavyweight champ, and the IBF cruiserweight title holder.
37:08Vander Holyfield has certainly added glamour to a division that has not been star-studded.
37:16That is the end of the fight, as he didn't even bother to count.
37:22That was the end of that, and I think it was well stopped there.
37:25Davey Pearl doing.
37:29Okay, we're set with Ricky Parkey now alongside Dave Diles.
37:33Let's get back to the ring.
37:34Ricky, I said in concluding my interview with Evander Holyfield that as bad as the first fight was,
37:40the second fight is what great boxing fans come to expect.
37:45It's what makes this sport survive.
37:47I have to know first, what did you say to Evander?
37:50You came over, you hugged him, and you said something in his ear, and I want to know what it was.
37:55I told him it was a great fight.
37:57You know, I said, you're a good champion.
37:58You should be a true champion.
38:00I'm a good champion, and I will be back.
38:04That's what I told him.
38:05I told him he was great.
38:06You know, he's a young guy.
38:07He should be there for a long time.
38:09Hope you just keep it long enough, give me a chance like I gave him.
38:12Going into the fight, I think you knew yesterday when you and I talked out by the pool
38:18that you weren't going to come in here and prance and dance and try to be cute.
38:22You knew then what you were going to do, didn't you, or try to do?
38:24Yes, I know that.
38:24I knew that I was going to bang with him in the early part of the rounds.
38:27He happened to call me early and follow up because he throws a lot of punches.
38:32I came in the ring expecting something different.
38:35I called him.
38:36I called him good.
38:36I didn't follow up because I know he does a lot of punches.
38:40I figured take him down a stretch and beat him down a stretch.
38:43I started too slow.
38:44I thought you started pretty fast, really.
38:47No, I was slow.
38:47Not slow?
38:49When you went down the first time, you signaled, I'm okay, and you shook your fist.
38:55But I didn't think you really were okay then.
38:57That was a really surprised knockdown.
38:59I wasn't hurt.
39:00I was stunned.
39:02When you get stung, your leg shakes a little bit.
39:04You know, you get a little wobbly.
39:06That's what happened to me.
39:08You had a timeout, didn't you?
39:09Well, see, I never had that happen to me, so I never did know what to expect.
39:13All right?
39:13So I said, well, what's going on?
39:16All right?
39:17Because I know I took a good shot, and I just got, my leg got shaky.
39:20That's all.
39:22What's next for you?
39:23Just draw on boards.
39:25I'm going to go.
39:26I'll be back.
39:26I hope Vanden can hold the title until I came back.
39:29I gave him an opportunity to put a feather in his cap.
39:33Hope he can be there when I come back.
39:35You're a brave and courageous fighter.
39:37You gave us a good evening of fighting tonight and salvaged what could have been a bad evening
39:42with your game effort.
39:44Well, I hope, you know, the fans enjoy it.
39:47You know, I hope my hometowns enjoy it.
39:49It ain't no disgrace, you know, to lose one.
39:51So somebody's got to win, somebody's got to lose.
39:53That wasn't my boxing so great.
39:54I'm not disappointed.
39:55I fought a guy that beat me, you know, made me want to try harder.
40:00I lost before.
40:02It hurts.
40:03It makes you try harder and fight harder.
40:05That's what life is all about.
40:06You got ups, you got downs.
40:07Close.
40:08All right, when you're up, you feel good.
40:09When you're down, you feel down.
40:10That's the way God made it.
40:12Ricky Parkey, thank you.
40:13All right, thank you.
40:14Marv Albert has the referee, Richard Steele, who was a referee in the ring for that first,
40:20I'm not going to call it a fight.
40:23All right, thank you, Dave.
40:24It was a walk-a-thon.
40:26Ozzy Ocasio somehow winning a majority decision over Dwight Mohamed Kawi.
40:31Richard Steele spent a lot of time trying to coach both fighters.
40:34It appeared that you were trying to get them to fight.
40:37Yes, my job is to try to make a more colorful of a fight as possible.
40:43I can, you know, but, you know, one thing a lot of people don't understand, you know,
40:49when a guy is holding, if his tactic is to throw a combination and a hold, that's his fight plan, you know,
40:56providing that he is not doing, holding so much that he is interrupting the other guy or, you know,
41:04making a fight, a bad fight, it's not too much you can do.
41:08A lot of people don't understand that, you know, when there is holding,
41:12that means that a person is holding, but the other person most of the time is allowing him to hold.
41:18All right, we made the point earlier that Dwayne Ford, the chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission,
41:24would not allow us to talk to any of the judges who were involved in the Ocasio-Kawi fight.
41:29Dwayne Ford would not come on, but the referee, Richard Steele, is at our microphone.
41:34What were your feelings about the scoring on that fight?
41:37We thought it was incredible.
41:40Well, I thought the scoring, I won't say that much about the scoring,
41:43because I was there busy trying to make sure that everything was in order inside the ring,
41:49making sure that the holding was not excessive enough to spoil the fight,
41:55watching the heads and watching, making sure that all the punches was in front.
41:59But the scoring, you know, I guess the guy won,
42:02because, you know, if you look at all of the punches, he had to land more punches.
42:07Now, his punches might not have been that hard.
42:09You're kidding me.
42:11You thought Ocasio possibly won?
42:13Oh, yeah, I thought so.
42:16If that's the way they scored it, they are the professional.
42:18They were the ones sitting there, you know.
42:20I'm not going to go against their scoring.
42:22Well, of course.
42:23It's the old Bill Clem statement.
42:25It happened because I called it that way, so there's no other way to look at it.
42:29We're getting a little bit close on time.
42:31Richard Steele, thank you for coming.
42:33All right, Richard Steele, the referee of the Ocasio-Cawe fight,
42:37and there's a look at the Dave Moretti scorecard.
42:41He had Ocasio 96 to 94.
42:47You can see that he gave the first four rounds to Ocasio.
42:50Ocasio at the time when he was running like a thoroughbred racehorse.
42:55Of course, I don't believe that the referee had any other choice but to agree with the commission.
43:01He works with the commission, and he's there to do the fight.
43:04All right, the other judges had it by one point, and one had it even,
43:09so it was a majority decision.
43:10But it was Evander Holyfield, and the big one stopping Ricky Parkey.
43:16So for Freddie Pacheco and Dave Dials, this is Marv Albert saying so long from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
43:24The preceding program was a presentation of Sports Television International.
43:29Executive producer Jim Spence.
43:31Tonight's telecast was produced by Bob Lanning.
43:36Directed by Frank Beezer.
43:38Executive in charge of production, Mike Pithy.
43:41Like a warrior that fights
43:43And wins the battle
43:45I know the taste of victory
43:49Though I went through some nights
43:51Consumed by the shadows
43:53I was crippled emotionally
43:56Somehow I made it to the heartache
44:02Yes, I did
44:03I escaped
44:05I escaped
