The Transport and Industrial Workers Union is alleging that Spancast Caribbean Limited took illegal action when it locked out over 20 workers of the company on Monday.
It spawned protest action a day later, and the Union plans on proceeding with legal action at the Industrial Court.

Alicia Boucher has the details.

00:00The scene outside of SpanCast Caribbean Limited, formerly Spancrete, on Tuesday afternoon,
00:11as workers gathered in protest. According to the Transport Industrial Workers' Trade Union,
00:16which represents the permanent employees, who we're told have at least 10 years tenure,
00:21a change in the management of SpanCast has led to the implementation of what the union calls
00:26oppressive measures over the past year. Tewoo's General Secretary, Ryan Ramdat, explains.
00:32So, for example, workers were not entitled to sick leave. Workers are not entitled to their vacation leave
00:40and things like injury leave and so on. Ramdat says three letters that were sent to management
00:46seeking dialogue went unanswered. He tells us Tewoo tried visiting the company last Thursday,
00:52but that proved futile. Tewoo states that for the majority of workers, except for two or three,
01:13the call never came and they showed up for work on Monday and were barred from entering.
01:17The workers then contacted the trade union.
01:20And informed us that the gate is locked and the instruction by the security is that
01:26everybody has been terminated and they're no longer employed there. Basically what the company did
01:33was engage in a lockout, which is under the Industrial Relations Act, can be deemed to be
01:40illegal industrial action on their behalf. Tewoo says no official termination letters were issued and
01:46the workers were not forewarned about the decision. Lenny Danclair, who has been employed there for a
01:52decade, believes it's retaliation against the workers for engaging the trade union.
01:56Tewoo is calling on Spancast to meet in good faith as it is seeking clarity on what it calls a heavy-handed
02:19approach taken by the company's management. But Ramdat indicates that legal action will follow.
02:24So we did reach out to the Ministry of Labour and the Minister is aware of what is taking place.
02:31I spoke to them about two o'clock and their recommendation is that we go ahead with
02:39the Industrial Relations offence. So we will be fine and that's what we are. Right now we are
02:45preparing that as we speak.
02:47The protest is set to continue on Wednesday. Alicia Boucher, TV6 News.
