Members of the Joint Trade Union Movement are calling on the government to reconsider the implementation of the recently-established no-protest zones, citing suppression of civil rights and freedoms. The trade unions say if the government fails to adjust its position, they will be forced to take further action. Rynessa Cutting reports.

01:05if we look at the 15 identified zones as comrade ash would have indicated earlier
01:13and you are to do a 500 meter separation from each zone
01:20it means that portorspin is on no protest no demonstration no picket zone
01:27and we are saying as trade unionists protests march demonstration peaceful picket
01:34all these actions which are peaceful are acts that are normally done as part of our tool and trade
01:53we are in a state of emergency so trade unions have to be very careful we in very
01:59peculiar times we in times where if it is that you say something that offends a leader
02:04you could find yourself the next day behind bars you know you ain't getting an opportunity to answer
02:10any questions your family crying snap in the nose all kind of thing but the reality is this
02:15you have to do what you have to do you know why we have to do it just preserve democracy
02:20in trinidad and tobago
02:34and this is a clear message to the government of the day we didn't vote for this citizens didn't vote

02:41trade unions we don't deserve this dissent is not disloyalty constructive criticism is not criminality
02:50accountability and accountability is not above the rule of law democracy is not organized or is
02:59not negotiated this is ours and this is our right and what we are saying as the progressive trade union
