Kevin Kelley takes on Derrick "Smoke" Gainer in a rematch from 1996 on HBO Boxing from Madison Square Garden in NYC
Transcript
00:00:00The following is a special presentation of HBO Sports, the network of champions.
00:00:07Tonight, HBO Sports presents two fights between boxers who know each other well.
00:00:15One is a rematch of one of the fiercest battles of 1996.
00:00:19The other a bout between a champion and a former sparring partner.
00:00:23When Kevin Kelly took on Derek Gaynor two years ago, he quickly found himself in an unexpected war.
00:00:28Kelly goes down, and his right eye is a miss.
00:00:32In the eighth round, his right eye virtually shut. Kelly looked finished.
00:00:36But somehow, he landed that one miraculous punch.
00:00:40Down goes Gaynor!
00:00:41And Gaynor may not get up!
00:00:45Tonight, they meet again.
00:00:48Then, you'll see Roy Jones, arguably the best fighter of his era,
00:00:52whose knockout power has left his last two opponents gasping for breath.
00:00:58Last summer, Jones sought redemption for his disqualification loss to Montel Griffin.
00:01:04Jones is looking for a first round knockout.
00:01:06Just firing power punches.
00:01:08Jones gets his vindication via a first round knockout.
00:01:13Then this spring, Jones fought Virgil Hill, a former champion, never before knocked out.
00:01:19Boom!
00:01:20Right to the body, unheard of.
00:01:22One punch, knockout on a body punch.
00:01:25Tonight, old acquaintances come together once again.
00:01:28First, Kevin Kelly and Derek Gaynor in a sequel to their War of 96.
00:01:32And then, Roy Jones faces former stablemate Lou Delvall.
00:01:36Kelly Gaynor two, Jones Delvall.
00:01:38Does familiarity really breed contempt?
00:01:43What now?
00:01:44Then, Roy Jones mais rare?
00:01:45腳 grafted off the ship,
00:01:46a half of ourRNA team near our city.
00:01:48It습니다!
00:01:49已經完成 mångaера Web glyphos,
00:01:51but now I found him on the roof.
00:01:53Hear it out, Marilyn Hill.
00:01:54And then wind and cold喜 prizes,
00:01:55and I love...
00:01:57Then, I know...
00:01:58Bye.
00:01:59Has this been a功 favored place yet?
00:03:32And hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lampley.
00:03:34We welcome you back to this edition of HBO's World Championship Boxing, for which the storyline has already been established.
00:03:40Kevin Kelly and Derek Gaynor in a rematch in which Gaynor will be trying to get revenge after Kelly so unexpectedly knocked him out two years ago,
00:03:47a fight that Gaynor was winning going away as they entered the eighth round.
00:03:51And then Roy Jones tries to become the first to unify the light heavyweight championship since Michael Spinks did it against Dwight Braxton 15 years ago.
00:04:00Oddly, he'll be going against a guy who sparred with him for 38 rounds back in 1995 when Roy was preparing to fight the only other softball he's faced in his professional career, a fighter named Antoine Byrd.
00:04:12Working with me as always, HBO Boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
00:04:15And Larry, here in New York, in the past week and a half, Roy Jones has been seemingly everywhere, promoting the fight for Madison Square Garden and the promoters, promoting this network for HBO, showing up at social functions, spending time with writers and broadcasters.
00:04:31All of these activities that Roy's been noted for avoiding in the past.
00:04:35What do you make of the new Roy Jones?
00:04:37Well, according to Roy Jones, this is the real Roy Jones, the good guy Roy Jones, the happy guy Roy Jones.
00:04:46The other Roy Jones, the Roy Jones with his game face on almost perpetually, he calls RJ, some stranger named RJ.
00:04:57Now, this is a Jekyll and Hyde thing that carries over into the ring as well.
00:05:03In the ring, Roy Jones likes to be master of everything.
00:05:06He likes to be in control, wants to outbox and outthink his opponents.
00:05:11And if a knockout opportunity comes, fine.
00:05:14But RJ is the terminator, the annihilator.
00:05:18And that Roy Jones, I get the feeling from him, he doesn't particularly like.
00:05:23He'd rather be Roy Jones rather than RJ.
00:05:27What I'm wondering, Jim, is whether RJ is the only guy out there who can give Roy Jones a real fight.
00:05:33Yeah, that's the business we're looking for down the road.
00:05:35Roy's found an opponent, he's met the enemy, and it is him.
00:05:38Well, we'll see what Duvall can do with Roy Jones later on tonight.
00:05:41Let's get ready for the featherweight matchup and another boxing businessman, heavyweight legend George Foreman with us as always.
00:05:48George, Derek Gaynor won every minute of every round going into the eighth round a couple of years ago against Kevin Kelly.
00:05:54So he can look back on that and say, I was doing great.
00:05:56Kelly, on the other hand, scored the knockout when he needed it.
00:06:00Which one has the right to bring confidence into the ring tonight?
00:06:03This should be Gaynor's night.
00:06:05He won't remember at all the knockout because it caught him by surprise.
00:06:08But he can remember he was totally in control of this fight.
00:06:11He had a better reach.
00:06:12He had a better punch.
00:06:13He should have won the first one.
00:06:14I think, if he can remember correctly, he can win the second.
00:06:18Certainly he has the boxing skills to do so.
00:06:20He's got the package, I tell you.
00:06:21But Gaynor may want to try to make it a less exciting fight than what we saw the first time around.
00:06:26Tough to do against Kevin Kelly.
00:06:28Kelly tempts people into wars, and he gets tempted into wars himself,
00:06:33as we've seen in three of the greatest fights of the past three years, all involving Kevin.
00:06:38In January 1995, undefeated featherweight champion Kevin Kelly fought Alejandro Gonzalez
00:06:46in the first of three sensational fights Kelly would take part in over the next three years.
00:06:52Kelly's in severe trouble in his own corner.
00:06:55Kelly seemingly unable to see the punches coming, and Gonzalez just firing at will.
00:07:03And there goes the busting play.
00:07:05Low-to-toe encounter.
00:07:08Gonzalez once again appears the stronger man.
00:07:11Kelly not throwing.
00:07:13Crowd on its feet.
00:07:15Kevin Kelly can't see out of that right eye.
00:07:19Look at me.
00:07:20You can't see?
00:07:20You have a trouble for your life.
00:07:21You can't see?
00:07:22My eyes are almost shut.
00:07:23Fight's over.
00:07:24Oh, no!
00:07:25Fight's over, kid.
00:07:26Fight's over.
00:07:27There's always tomorrow.
00:07:2817 months later, June 1996, against Derek Smoke Gaynor.
00:07:35Kelly, the flushing flash.
00:07:40Three punch combination, four punches, five punches, and Kelly goes down, and his right eye
00:07:45is a miss.
00:07:46I can't see out of it, but I'm fighting.
00:07:52Let's go.
00:07:52Can you see?
00:07:53I don't know.
00:07:53Kelly stunned.
00:07:54Stunned now as Gaynor pounds him against the ropes.
00:07:57He got hit twice on the blind eye.
00:08:00Kevin Kelly, blind in the right eye, scores a dramatic fail-out knockout of Derek Gaynor.
00:08:0718 months later, December 1997, against Prince Nassim Hamid.
00:08:13The best man went.
00:08:14Touch up.
00:08:14Let's go.
00:08:15Come on, guys.
00:08:16Touch it up.
00:08:17All right.
00:08:18Let's do this.
00:08:20Down goes the bridge on Kelly's first serious landing punch.
00:08:26His gloves touch the canvas.
00:08:28The count begins.
00:08:30The second knockdown for Kelly.
00:08:34There's the power you were talking about.
00:08:36And Kelly is stunned.
00:08:41Leaping right hand by the Prince.
00:08:43And a hard left.
00:08:45And Kelly's down for the third time.
00:08:47Three wars in three years for Kevin Kelly, who tonight will add another chapter to his
00:08:54colorful boxing history as he faces Derek Gaynor in a rematch.
00:09:01And we bring it back live to the theater at Madison Square Garden.
00:09:04The second tale of the tape between the 31-year-old Kelly and the 26-year-old Gaynor.
00:09:09Good food in New York City, as is evidenced by the fact that Kevin Kelly has gained 14 pounds
00:09:16since yesterday's weigh-in.
00:09:17And Derek Gaynor, 16 pounds to add to the 126 he carried onto the scale yesterday.
00:09:23We came for a featherweight fight.
00:09:25We're going to see a well-await fight.
00:09:27Punched at numbers, Larry.
00:09:30This is how they did against each other in the first fight.
00:09:34The numbers confirming Gaynor's domination of Kelly up until the end.
00:09:42Same situation with jabs.
00:09:45But this is a game in which one punch can change your life.
00:09:49Rules of the bout.
00:09:51Rules of the bout, I should say, with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
00:09:55The Kevin Kelly-Derek Gaynor fight is scheduled for 10 rounds using the rules of the New York
00:10:00State Athletic Commission.
00:10:01And it's a little bit different tonight, Jim.
00:10:03The standing eight count is in effect.
00:10:05The three knockdown rule is in effect.
00:10:07The doctor or the referee can stop the fight.
00:10:10And you cannot be saved by the bell in any round, including the 10th and final round.
00:10:14Jim.
00:10:15All right.
00:10:17Derek Gaynor, scheduled to be the first to enter the ring.
00:10:21Gaynor, of course, comes from the Roy Jones stable in Pensacola, Florida.
00:10:26And, Larry, there's a remarkable personal story behind the two fighters,
00:10:30which deals directly with Gaynor's presence here in the Garden tonight.
00:10:34Now, Gaynor's the type of fighter we may never have seen before or after Kelly,
00:10:39but for the fact that he has a friend in a high place, not a promoter, not a boxing commissioner,
00:10:45but a fighter, Roy Jones.
00:10:47I have never known or heard of a top fighter doing for a pal and stablemate
00:10:54what Roy Jones has done for Derek Gaynor,
00:10:58insisting that Gaynor get these opportunities
00:11:01as part of the package of getting Roy Jones.
00:11:05It's really a terrific story and great credit for Roy Jones.
00:11:13And the words of the Phil Collins song,
00:11:16so appropriate because Gaynor began calling Kelly personally on the phone
00:11:21to demand a rematch within the week after Kelly's knockout of Gaynor back in 1996.
00:11:27The two have spent countless hours on the phone together,
00:11:30and Gaynor says,
00:11:31when I'm not talking to Kevin, I talk to his wife.
00:11:34And he's never been able to get a word in edgewise.
00:11:37And the record for Derek Gaynor.
00:11:4023 wins, 4 losses, 16 KOs.
00:11:42He's won his last six fights all by knockout,
00:11:44as Derek's punching power has continued to grow throughout his career.
00:11:49We're coming out!
00:11:51Guns blazing!
00:11:55And now for the flushing flash.
00:12:00New York's own Kevin Kelly.
00:12:03Kevin?
00:12:03There's a real question on the part of many in boxing of
00:12:07whether Kevin, for all these hard fights,
00:12:11is now a spent bullet, a shot fighter.
00:12:17We'll find out tonight.
00:12:19But how good you are.
00:12:21Don't ever let him see you coming.
00:12:22That's the gap, my friend.
00:12:24You gotta keep yourself small.
00:12:26Innocent.
00:12:27You're the little guy.
00:12:29You know the nerd, the leper,
00:12:31should kick and serve him.
00:12:32Look at that.
00:12:36Underestimated from day one.
00:12:41Millennium's coming.
00:12:43I don't find.
00:12:45Round 20.
00:12:49You know, along with some other little guys
00:12:53like Junior Jones and Michael Carbohal
00:12:55and Johnny Tapia and Orlando Canizales,
00:12:59Kevin Kelly has helped make the 90s
00:13:02the golden era for the little American guys.
00:13:11He's been as exciting and as excited
00:13:14a fighter as he's been in the sport
00:13:16for a long time.
00:13:17Larry talked about the question of whether Kevin Kelly
00:13:22is a spent bullet.
00:13:24And of course, one of the reasons for that,
00:13:25this will be his 53rd professional prize fight.
00:13:2948 wins, two losses, two draws, 32 KOs.
00:13:34The losses to Alejandro Gonzalez
00:13:36and last December, the Prince Nassim Hamed.
00:13:39Everybody in this weight class wants to fight Hamed.
00:13:43Nobody wants the Prince more than Kevin Kelly.
00:13:45And we reminded you to log on to HBO's

00:15:38And his opponent
00:15:39across the ring,
00:15:40fighting out of the blue corner.
00:15:42Wearing green with yellow trim
00:15:44and weighing in,
00:15:45also at 126 pounds.
00:15:48An outstanding professional record,
00:15:5048 victories,
00:15:5132 by knockout,
00:15:54with only two losses,
00:15:55and he has two draws.
00:15:57Ladies and gentlemen,
00:15:58from Flushing, New York,
00:16:00here is
00:16:01the former
00:16:01two-time
00:16:02world champion,
00:16:05the Flushing Flash,
00:16:07Kevin
00:16:07Kelly!
00:16:09Good evening,
00:16:17good evening,
00:16:18Derrick.
00:16:19You received your rules earlier
00:16:20in the dressing room
00:16:20by the New York State Athletic Commission.
00:16:22Let's have a nice,
00:16:23clean fight,
00:16:24touch,
00:16:24gloves,
00:16:24good luck to the both of you.
00:16:28Derrick Gaynor
00:16:29says that Kelly hit him
00:16:31with a lucky punch.
00:16:32The last time,
00:16:34Kelly said he's going to hit him
00:16:35with more lucky punches.
00:16:37One of them is going to be right.
00:16:39Judge, ready here.
00:16:44Two southpaws
00:16:45in tonight's fight.
00:16:46Judge, ready.
00:16:47So you don't see
00:16:48the awkwardness of southpaw
00:16:49against conventional fighter.
00:16:51Sometimes it's unusual
00:16:52for southpaws
00:16:53to face each other
00:16:54because southpaws
00:16:55aren't any more accustomed
00:16:56to fighting against southpaws
00:16:58than conventional fighters are.
00:17:00But Kelly and Gaynor,
00:17:02of course,
00:17:02have seen each other before.
00:17:03one of them is going to have to
00:17:12get sharp and stay sharp
00:17:14for the remainder of the fight.
00:17:17Kelly has got to make sure
00:17:19he stays out of a fight.
00:17:21Keep it a boxing match.
00:17:22You can win a boxing match
00:17:23or get a knockout.
00:17:24Well, George,
00:17:25one of your oldest sayings
00:17:26and one of my favorites from you
00:17:28is if you have a job,
00:17:29a jab,
00:17:30the sport is easy.
00:17:31Derek Gaynor with his superior reach
00:17:34ought to be able
00:17:35to keep Kevin Kelly
00:17:36at the end of his jab
00:17:37if he can make it work
00:17:38from the beginning.
00:17:39He's doing a fine job.
00:17:40He's keeping the fight
00:17:41in the middle of the ring right now.
00:17:43Keeps his back against the ropes.
00:17:45That's when the problems
00:17:46start to explode up.
00:17:48Stay in the middle of the ring.
00:17:50And don't let Kelly
00:17:51onto the inside.
00:17:53Trainer Alton Merkerson
00:17:54told us that Gaynor
00:17:55would not make the mistake
00:17:56he made last time
00:17:57of getting into a toe-to-toe war
00:17:59with Kelly.
00:18:00Kelly should keep
00:18:02Gaynor's back
00:18:03against those ropes.
00:18:05He can win the fight easily.
00:18:07Gaynor does not like
00:18:09punching against the ropes.
00:18:17Gaynor has the build
00:18:18of a featherweight
00:18:20Tommy Hearn,
00:18:21big shoulders,
00:18:23very thin waist,
00:18:24very strong,
00:18:27but also vulnerable
00:18:29as Tommy Hearns was.
00:18:31And he's been transformed.
00:18:33He is a puncher now.
00:18:34Earlier in his career, Larry,
00:18:35he was a slapper,
00:18:37not a puncher.
00:18:37It took Derrick a long time
00:18:38to learn to settle down
00:18:39on his punches,
00:18:40turn them over,
00:18:41and put some authority
00:18:42into his game.
00:18:43He had to fight
00:18:44to find out
00:18:45how to fight his own way,
00:18:46not Roy Jones' way.
00:18:47Oh, oh, oh!
00:18:48Stop pulling down
00:18:48that head now!
00:18:50Arthur McCandy, Jr.,
00:18:51warning Gaynor
00:18:52against Holden Kelly
00:18:53behind the head.
00:18:55Two fighters
00:19:03who were starched dry
00:19:05yesterday
00:19:05when they weighed in
00:19:06at 126.
00:19:07Kevin Kelly's had trouble
00:19:09as he's aged
00:19:11making the 126-pound limit.
00:19:14This week,
00:19:14his trainer,
00:19:15Phil Borgia,
00:19:15insists he weighed 126
00:19:17by Tuesday,
00:19:18which gave him
00:19:18three extra days
00:19:19to get comfortable
00:19:20at the weight
00:19:21and then come back up
00:19:22for fight time.
00:19:23You know,
00:19:24but adding 14 and 16 pounds,
00:19:27you're talking about
00:19:28featherweights
00:19:29adding 12, 13 percent
00:19:31at their body weight.
00:19:33A knockdown
00:19:34scored by Gaynor
00:19:35against Kelly.
00:19:36Five, six, seven, eight.
00:19:41Looked more like a slip
00:19:43than a knockdown
00:19:43from here,
00:19:44but we'll take a look
00:19:45back at the replay.
00:19:47Gaynor's got to be careful
00:19:48thinking that was
00:19:49a knockdown.
00:19:52So a knockdown
00:19:53for Gaynor
00:19:53in the first round.
00:19:55It had been a tactical round
00:19:56up to that moment.
00:19:58Joe, water!
00:20:02Joe to water!
00:20:03And immediately,
00:20:04Al Gavin goes to work
00:20:05with the inswell
00:20:06on Kevin Kelly's eyes.
00:20:08You've seen the problems
00:20:09he's had in the past,
00:20:10particularly with the right eye.
00:20:11With the jab,
00:20:12you know what?
00:20:12You need the jab to work.
00:20:14Don't look too low.
00:20:16The U's got to beat it.
00:20:17And it's there.
00:20:18Okay?
00:20:18What are we saying
00:20:19the whole time to train him?
00:20:20This don't matter up here.
00:20:21We'll get there.
00:20:22Here's a replay.
00:20:25Here's a replay.
00:20:28Well, let's see
00:20:29if we can find
00:20:29a knockdown here.
00:20:30Well, it hit him
00:20:31on the shoulder.
00:20:32It certainly was not
00:20:33a knockdown.
00:20:34That is not a knockdown.
00:20:35He did.
00:20:37Came in off balance.
00:20:40You'll find him.
00:20:42But referee Arthur McCanty Jr.
00:20:43giving Gaynor credit
00:20:45for a knockdown of Kelly
00:20:46there at the end
00:20:47of the first round.
00:20:48And that ensures
00:20:49that Gaynor
00:20:50will have won the round.
00:20:51Otherwise,
00:20:52it was an iffy call.
00:20:53I made it a 10-9 round
00:20:55for Gaynor.
00:20:56It is an official knockdown,
00:20:58but, uh,
00:20:59and so he has to get the round.
00:21:02But ordinarily,
00:21:03that would be a 10-8 round
00:21:04if it was a legitimate knockdown.
00:21:06And you saw that
00:21:06Harold Letterman
00:21:07scored at 10-8,
00:21:08so obviously Harold
00:21:09has judged that
00:21:10to be a legitimate knockdown.
00:21:13We'll talk more to him
00:21:14about his card
00:21:14as the fight goes on.
00:21:18Kelly, thus far,
00:21:19is doing a good job
00:21:20of keeping his left hand up,
00:21:23making sure that
00:21:23nothing sneaks in.
00:21:26No mention of the knockdown
00:21:44between rounds
00:21:45in Kevin Kelly's corner
00:21:46where the greater concentration
00:21:48was on getting Al Gavin
00:21:49set up to go to work
00:21:51on Kevin's eye
00:21:52and try to do
00:21:52preventive maintenance there.
00:21:54Kelly was able to throw
00:21:56a good straight left
00:21:57to the body.
00:21:59Gaynor's better understand
00:22:00that that knockdown
00:22:01he had in the last fight
00:22:02was an accumulation
00:22:02of a lot of punches,
00:22:04not just one shot.
00:22:06You don't want him
00:22:06getting hit in the body
00:22:08too early.
00:22:09In his fights
00:22:10since the Kelly fight,
00:22:12Gaynor has been
00:22:13much more positive
00:22:15than he is now.
00:22:16and he is being,
00:22:17he is fighting
00:22:18a much more careful fight
00:22:20than we've seen him
00:22:21in his recent fights.
00:22:22Hard left hand
00:22:23over the top
00:22:24by Gaynor.
00:22:25Little right uppercut
00:22:26as Kevin Kelly
00:22:27was coming back up.
00:22:29Gaynor able
00:22:30to be the aggressor
00:22:31when they stand
00:22:31in the middle
00:22:32of the ring like this.
00:22:33When they get closer
00:22:34to the ropes,
00:22:35the rolls reverse
00:22:35and Kelly becomes
00:22:36the aggressor.
00:22:54I hope Kelly's
00:22:55trying to think of
00:22:56something to combat
00:22:57what Gaynor is doing
00:23:00because he himself
00:23:02isn't doing anything
00:23:02at the moment.
00:23:04Well, Kevin had
00:23:05some very low punch
00:23:06outputs in three
00:23:07or four of the rounds
00:23:08in Jacksonville
00:23:09against Gaynor
00:23:10and he's going to have
00:23:11a very low punch
00:23:11output in this round.
00:23:13Yeah, the problem is
00:23:14once you've knocked
00:23:15the guy out,
00:23:16you pretty much think
00:23:16in your mind,
00:23:17I can knock him out
00:23:18a little earlier
00:23:18and you don't go back
00:23:19to the rule of getting
00:23:21those points in the bank
00:23:22then trying for the knockout
00:23:24in the scheme of things.
00:23:26Kelly is using his left foot
00:23:28as the pivot.
00:23:28You notice he keeps it planted,
00:23:31hardly picks it up.
00:23:33Gaynor is able
00:23:33to land good shots
00:23:34because you don't want
00:23:36to pivot too much now.
00:23:38So far, Kevin has only
00:23:39been able to throw
00:23:40one punch at a time,
00:23:41much less land combinations.
00:23:43Gaynor is using
00:23:45superior movement
00:23:46to manage the ring
00:23:48effectively against Kelly.
00:23:49Time.
00:23:50Keep it clean now,
00:23:51that's it.
00:23:52And Roy Jones
00:23:54is serious enough
00:23:54about his fight
00:23:55with Lou Deval tonight
00:23:56that he has foregone
00:23:57his occasional custom
00:23:59of sitting at ringside
00:24:00and rooting for Gaynor
00:24:02while Gaynor fights.
00:24:03Tonight, Roy spending
00:24:04the extra time
00:24:05in the dressing room
00:24:06to get ready for Deval
00:24:08and to try to produce
00:24:10another performance
00:24:11similar to the one
00:24:12he showed us
00:24:13against Virgil Hill
00:24:14in April
00:24:15against Montel Griffin
00:24:17last summer.
00:24:18Both of those
00:24:18sensational victories for Roy.
00:24:20Where is that?
00:24:22I need that speed.
00:24:23Okay?
00:24:24You want to do it your way?
00:24:25I'll adjust to your way.
00:24:26If you want to do it our way,
00:24:27we'll be out of here.
00:24:27Then do it our way
00:24:28and we'll be out of here.
00:24:30Jay.
00:24:30When you move to your left
00:24:32or right,
00:24:32now put it on a little lighter.
00:24:35Okay?
00:24:36When you come out of...
00:24:37When you come around the side,
00:24:39left or right,
00:24:40don't move out too far.
00:24:41They got out.
00:24:42I'll put it up.
00:24:43I'll come back with new hooks.
00:24:44Kevin Kelly only threw 20 punches
00:24:50in the second round.
00:24:51He's only thrown 46
00:24:52in the first two rounds.
00:24:5446 in one round
00:24:55is not a particularly good output
00:24:57for a featherweight.
00:24:58Kevin needs to be throwing more punches.
00:25:02As you get old
00:25:03and you put on that weight
00:25:03as Kelly is doing it,
00:25:05plans for knockouts.
00:25:08Trying to win things on points
00:25:09kind of go out of your mind.
00:25:11You should get back to the basics.
00:25:13Land some punches.
00:25:14You should get back to the next round.
00:25:15You should get back to the next round.
00:25:24So, Justice was the case two years ago.
00:25:26Kevin Kelly finding Derek Gaynor
00:25:28a tough puzzle to solve
00:25:29in the early rounds.
00:25:32But Gaynor's standing...
00:25:33stand on the rope,
00:25:34which is what Kelly should want him to do,
00:25:36stay on the rope.
00:25:37Yeah, but George,
00:25:38Gaynor wants to win this fight
00:25:40so badly
00:25:40that he's making an ugly fight
00:25:43out of it.
00:25:43It's ugly right now,
00:25:45but there is some power
00:25:46in those kitchen tables.
00:25:47I'll tell you,
00:25:48in the kitchen table there.
00:25:51You know,
00:25:51this is the old saying of,
00:25:53you know,
00:25:54stink him out
00:25:55and then try to knock him out.
00:25:57He really has a lot of respect for Kelly.
00:25:59You can knock a guy down,
00:26:01you're just gonna
00:26:01fools...
00:26:02fools rush in.
00:26:04Yep.
00:26:04Well, you don't have to rush in
00:26:06to make a fight out of it.
00:26:08I mean, this is just...
00:26:10Well, he doesn't have to make a fight
00:26:12out of it to win it,
00:26:12and I think that's the point
00:26:13you were making
00:26:14at the beginning, Larry,
00:26:15when you said he wants it so badly,
00:26:17he's willing to win ugly,
00:26:18if that's what it takes.
00:26:21Right now,
00:26:22that's what he's doing.
00:26:23Sometimes you can demonstrate
00:26:24your power in other places.
00:26:26This may not be a place
00:26:27to demonstrate
00:26:28with this Kevin Kelly
00:26:29because he is clever
00:26:30and he knows
00:26:31how to land
00:26:31that straight right hand.
00:26:34And the big left.
00:26:35And that great big left.
00:26:37Yeah, particularly
00:26:37if you give him
00:26:38a counter shot opportunity
00:26:39as Gaynor did
00:26:39the last time around.
00:26:41He will switch
00:26:42from their softball position
00:26:43and get you.
00:26:46Kevin has been known
00:26:47to go to a conventional stance.
00:26:50That's the kind of fight
00:26:52that Kelly wants.
00:26:53Keep this thing up
00:26:53against the rope,
00:26:54landing punches,
00:26:55and making Gaynor
00:26:56going to hold on.
00:26:57And throw combinations
00:26:58when you get him
00:26:59against the ropes,
00:26:59not just one punch at a time.
00:27:01Throw as many as you can.
00:27:02Is Kelly's right eye
00:27:04beginning to redden already?
00:27:05Already.
00:27:06It's starting to red
00:27:07just a little bit.
00:27:07Redden.
00:27:10And a lot of it
00:27:11has to do with Gaynor
00:27:13pushing him off
00:27:13with the sides of his gloves.
00:27:18Chronic affliction
00:27:19for Kevin Kelly.
00:27:21Kelly infected
00:27:22with a jab now.
00:27:26Kevin reaching a little bit
00:27:33with the jab.
00:27:35Gaynor firing his own jab
00:27:37as he backs up.
00:27:39Maintains distance
00:27:40between himself and Kelly.
00:27:41Good fight plan for Gaynor.
00:27:44Albeit not an entertaining one.
00:27:47Break!
00:27:48Step back.
00:27:50Time.
00:27:51Stop holding.
00:27:52Young.
00:28:02Okay?
00:28:02Okay.
00:28:02He's set foot.
00:28:03You're trying to land one shot.
00:28:05You put him together, man,
00:28:06you're going to touch him
00:28:07a little bit more.
00:28:08Concealing your shots up.
00:28:09You're doing good.
00:28:11Be a little more
00:28:11authoritative with your jab.
00:28:12Don't be so defensive
00:28:13with it pulling back.
00:28:14Just keep it in his face.
00:28:15All right.
00:28:15You can touch him over
00:28:16and double it up
00:28:17and triple it up sometimes.
00:28:18They ain't got to be hard.
00:28:19You understand?
00:28:21But just keep that jab working.
00:28:23Keep giving them angles.
00:28:24He'll make a mistake
00:28:24and you can catch him
00:28:25with some strong shots.
00:28:26Okay.
00:28:26That's what you've been doing for.
00:28:28Right here.
00:28:30What did you compliment me on?
00:28:32In the gym.
00:28:33Oh, you got me thinking.
00:28:34We got you thinking.
00:28:35Right?
00:28:35Then do it.
00:28:37This is our town.
00:28:38The heat shouldn't even
00:28:38be in his deal.
00:28:39Let's open the room.
00:28:40All right?
00:28:41You're the man, bro.
00:28:43You hear me?
00:28:44You are the man.
00:28:44Take the bucket, Joe.
00:28:47We've told you in the past
00:28:48about the intensely
00:28:49close relationship
00:28:50between Kelly
00:28:51and his trainer,
00:28:52Phil Borgia.
00:28:53They are like family
00:28:54to one another.
00:28:55In fact,
00:28:56a couple months from now,
00:28:57Kevin is moving to Las Vegas
00:28:59and Borgia's moving
00:29:00to Las Vegas with him.
00:29:02Harold Letterman,
00:29:03how do you have it scored
00:29:03through three?
00:29:04Jim, I got a three to nothing,
00:29:0630 to 26.
00:29:07Derek Smoke gained it.
00:29:08Jim, I got to tell you something.
00:29:09It's not a bad fight.
00:29:11I mean, this is good
00:29:11ring generalship
00:29:12on this kid's part.
00:29:13You don't stand
00:29:14in front of a puncher
00:29:15and Derek Hayner's moving
00:29:16and every time
00:29:17he goes to his right,
00:29:18okay, every time
00:29:19he gets to his left,
00:29:19pardon me,
00:29:20Kevin can't hit him
00:29:21because Kevin can't
00:29:21cross over with that left hand.
00:29:24Kevin's trying to smack him
00:29:25with the left hand
00:29:26and he can't catch Derek Hayner
00:29:28as long as Derek Hayner
00:29:29goes to the left.
00:29:30Then Derek keeps him
00:29:30off balance
00:29:31by going back to the right.
00:29:32It's a stinking fight, Harold.
00:29:35It's a stinking fight, Harold.
00:29:48Kelly able to get Gayner
00:29:49still against the ropes here.
00:29:51Nothing happens
00:29:52as long as Kelly
00:29:53keeps him against the rope.
00:29:54Gayner's a fighter
00:29:55that needs a little room.
00:29:58Gayner able to land
00:29:59with one uppercut
00:29:59and retaliation there,
00:30:01but sure enough,
00:30:02the longer Gayner
00:30:03stands against the ropes,
00:30:05the more Kelly lands.
00:30:11As Kelly's able
00:30:12to take just a little sting
00:30:14off his punches
00:30:14and throw more,
00:30:16this fight can be
00:30:16a lot easier.
00:30:21Keeps his left hand up,
00:30:22which is good,
00:30:23safe.
00:30:23Kelly is doing.
00:30:24Derrick Gayner's nickname
00:30:43on his trunks.
00:30:44Smoke.
00:30:45The old saying,
00:30:47of course,
00:30:48where there's smoke,
00:30:49there's fire.
00:30:51We haven't seen
00:30:52a lot of fire.
00:30:53not tonight.
00:30:54From either fire.
00:30:58Tonight,
00:30:59where there's smoke,
00:31:00there's smoke.
00:31:08Kelly started
00:31:09to switch it
00:31:09a little bit.
00:31:16Cross that backhand.
00:31:23Good little left hand
00:31:39in there by Kevin Kelly.
00:31:41One of the better punches
00:31:42he's landed.
00:31:43Fight may not be
00:31:44as exciting to Kelly,
00:31:46but when he keeps
00:31:46Gayner on the ropes,
00:31:48takes the fight
00:31:48completely out of him.
00:31:49Gainer landing
00:31:53as the round
00:31:54comes to a close.
00:31:56And a moment
00:31:57of excitement there.
00:31:58But all in all,
00:31:59the kind of fight
00:32:00in which a promo
00:32:00will be welcome relief.
00:32:02He's arguably
00:32:03the greatest American athlete
00:32:04of the 20th century.
00:32:05Maybe no other figure
00:32:06in sport transcended
00:32:07his own game
00:32:08to the degree
00:32:09to which Babe Ruth did.
00:32:10So what was it
00:32:11about the Bambino
00:32:12that so captured
00:32:13America's imagination?
00:32:14Why to this day
00:32:15is his spirit and memory
00:32:15still so much alive?
00:32:17On August 16th,
00:32:18the 50th anniversary
00:32:19of Babe Ruth's death,
00:32:20HBO Sports premieres
00:32:22the next edition
00:32:22of Sports of the 20th Century.
00:32:25We proudly present
00:32:26Babe Ruth.
00:32:30Let me have uppercuts,
00:32:31man.
00:32:31He's coming for it.
00:32:32All right?
00:32:32All right.
00:32:33Set him up for it.
00:32:34He's coming for it.
00:32:34Then come back with the hook.
00:32:36On the inside,
00:32:36I want you to work.
00:32:37I don't want you
00:32:38sitting in there.
00:32:38Okay.
00:32:39Okay?
00:32:39Take a deep breath.
00:32:41Okay, let's go.
00:32:43You gotta be busy on the inside.
00:32:47Oh, my God.
00:32:47Hey, look.
00:32:59Round five of a schedule 10.
00:33:03Non-title fight, 10 rounds.
00:33:06This fight has brought the crowd
00:33:08to its collective tush,
00:33:10not its feet.
00:33:12It's like jazz.
00:33:13You gotta love boxing
00:33:14to understand a fight like this.
00:33:15You gotta love music,
00:33:18understand jazz.
00:33:18You're right about that, George.
00:33:20Now, Kelly should be advised
00:33:23he should not step backwards
00:33:25from this gainer.
00:33:25You give him a little room
00:33:26and he's gonna get you.
00:33:28Stay close to him.
00:33:29One step backwards,
00:33:36as Kelly is doing,
00:33:37he's having to pay for it
00:33:39every time.
00:33:40Straight left hand
00:33:41landed for gainer.
00:33:41Little right uppercut
00:33:42landed as well.
00:33:43Good body punch by gainer.
00:33:45Good body punch by gainer.
00:33:58Nancy needs a fight for Kelly
00:33:59if he just keeps this guy
00:34:00on the ropes.
00:34:01body punch by gainer.
00:34:11Good body punch by Kelly.
00:34:14Good body punches, that's right.
00:34:16You notice his punch is a real effect
00:34:18if he takes the power off.
00:34:22Another straight left
00:34:23and right uppercut combination
00:34:25for gainer.
00:34:26Gainer's starting to find something
00:34:28with the straight left hand
00:34:29and the right uppercut coming back.
00:34:31Now, Kelly gets him against the ropes
00:34:32and goes to work again.
00:34:35As soon as he steps back,
00:34:37Kelly, gainer makes him pay for it.
00:34:40Can't step away from gainer.
00:34:45I think those body punches,
00:34:47George, may have made him step away.
00:34:49No, it's just a tactic.
00:34:51Whenever Kelly gets him up
00:34:52against the ropes,
00:34:53land a few shots,
00:34:54he steps back.
00:34:55Don't want to step away
00:34:59from a puncher.
00:35:00Step forward,
00:35:01keep his punches,
00:35:02keep his hands to his chest.
00:35:11Especially a long, tall puncher.
00:35:13Good left jab by right jab by Kelly.
00:35:31And the crowd beginning
00:35:32to work up a
00:35:33Kevin Kelly chant here.
00:35:35A lot of speculation tonight.
00:35:45Would this be a Kelly crowd?
00:35:46Would it be a Duvall crowd?
00:35:48Or will it be a Roy Jones crowd?
00:35:51Time!
00:35:53Find out more
00:35:54as the evening goes on.
00:36:02Your inside work
00:36:03under no circumstance
00:36:04but I want you to sit there
00:36:05and I'll punch.
00:36:06You understand?
00:36:07Anytime you get on the inside,
00:36:08I want you to be on top.
00:36:11I want you to...
00:36:13Here, here, here.
00:36:14Spit.
00:36:16Here.
00:36:17Listen, man.
00:36:19You're doing some nice stuff.
00:36:20Maybe we got two,
00:36:21but we need to get busy, bro.
00:36:22When you put the pressure on him,
00:36:23what was that crap
00:36:24when you get over there?
00:36:25That crap when you step to the side
00:36:27and you walk into his punch.
00:36:28What does that shit happen?
00:36:29Okay.
00:36:30Focus.
00:36:30When you jab,
00:36:31when you jab,
00:36:32everything happens.
00:36:35Are you going to do it?
00:36:36Yes.
00:36:37You pick it off that round.
00:36:38Build six round.
00:36:39Six round.
00:36:40Increase.
00:36:41This is the six round.
00:36:42This is the six round.
00:36:42Round six of a Schedule 10.
00:37:05In the fifth round,
00:37:06Kelly threw 42 punches.
00:37:08That's one of his more active rounds so far.
00:37:10In past fights,
00:37:11he's averaged 60 punch outputs per round,
00:37:14but it's awfully hard
00:37:15to generate that much activity
00:37:16against a moving Derek Gaynor.
00:37:19And Gaynor,
00:37:20because he moves so much,
00:37:21doesn't produce as many punches himself either.
00:37:23He threw 41 in the fifth round,
00:37:25averaging 36 per round in this fight.
00:37:31Kelly's corner told him
00:37:32to get up with the jab.
00:37:33When you're using your jab,
00:37:34you're a better fighter,
00:37:35and he seems to be doing it.
00:37:38Jab him with his right hand
00:37:39a little bit more.
00:37:51Hard left hand lands for Gaynor.
00:37:53And every time Gaynor throws
00:37:54that straight left hand over the top,
00:37:56he's targeting Kevin Kelly's
00:37:58sensitive right eye.
00:37:59And not only as much,
00:38:01he's waiting to Kevin Kelly
00:38:02makes one step backwards to do it.
00:38:04Whenever the motion is followed,
00:38:06he never tries it.
00:38:11The Gaynor's a smart fighter.
00:38:15And this is his chance.
00:38:16He should be a little more reckless.
00:38:18You want to win a fight like this.
00:38:19It's not only winning this fight, George,
00:38:26but getting future fights.
00:38:29How many guys are going to want to fight
00:38:30a fighter who moves around like this?
00:38:34All you got to do is help Roy Jones
00:38:36as you measure the stick.
00:38:39Kelly with a chance up against the ropes.
00:38:42Lands a couple shots.
00:38:43Gets the crowd involved.
00:38:45Thinks about switching to a conventional stance,
00:38:47and then Gaynor's gone.
00:38:49Yeah, it's not a promoter's dream
00:38:52to have a fighter winning
00:38:53by jumping and running right there.
00:38:55Put him in with a title shot.
00:38:5730 seconds in round six of a fight
00:39:12that's moving in fits and starts,
00:39:14but mostly moving according to the rhythm established
00:39:29by Derek Gaynor.
00:39:30I think Gaynor's doing real good now
00:39:32because Kevin Kelly is starting to drop
00:39:34his right hand a little bit.
00:39:36Wearing it low, that's what you want
00:39:39when you have a good left hook like Gaynor,
00:39:41a right hook like Gaynor.
00:39:50Well, the possibility that Kevin may be trying
00:39:53to tempt Derek Gaynor to throw more long left hands,
00:39:56but they've been working well for Gaynor.
00:39:57Still to come, Gaynor's star stablemate Roy Jones
00:40:00against that man, Lou DelValle of the Bronx.
00:40:05Born and raised in Queens,
00:40:06moved to the Bronx as a teenager.
00:40:09And when DelValle's sister Melissa met Roy Jones,
00:40:14she interceded on behalf of Lou
00:40:16to get Lou a chance to spar with Roy Jones.
00:40:20It happened in 1995 in Pensacola
00:40:22when Jones was getting ready to fight Antoine Byrd.
00:40:24It's given in boxing that when two fighters
00:40:27had sparred against one another,
00:40:29they'll have dramatically different versions
00:40:31of what happened.
00:40:32And, of course, that's the case here.
00:40:34Jones says it wasn't anything.
00:40:36DelValle says, I got to him a few times.
00:40:39We'll find out more later on tonight.
00:40:41That's the home movie footage of Lou DelValle
00:40:44on the left sparring with Roy Jones back in 1995.
00:40:48Tonight, it's for real.
00:40:50Now, Roy met DelValle's sister
00:40:53on the basketball court.
00:40:54She was playing for a junior college in Pensacola.
00:40:57She played for Pensacola Junior College
00:40:59before she transferred away to South Alabama.
00:41:02And Roy said that his team,
00:41:04his youth league and pickup team in Pensacola,
00:41:08always plays against the women at the junior college.
00:41:12Harold Letterman, how do you have it through six?
00:41:13Jim, I'll tell you, I got it 6-0, 60-53.
00:41:17Derek Smoke gained it.
00:41:18Jim, even when Kevin Kelly lands a punch,
00:41:20he doesn't follow up.
00:41:22It's always one punch at a time at any evening.
00:41:23Either he steps back or gain his gun.
00:41:26So, I mean, I just think Smoke's out punching him.
00:41:28About to knock down in the first round,
00:41:29if you go down on the end of a clean punch, Jim,
00:41:31and it was a clean right hand,
00:41:33the referee's got to call it a knockdown,
00:41:34and the judges should take away a point.
00:41:36Another thing, watch Arthur McCanty.
00:41:38He doesn't like Smoke gained it backhand
00:41:39to Kevin Kelly all night,
00:41:40and he's about to take a point
00:41:42if Smoke keeps it up.
00:41:43I have it four rounds,
00:41:46one for Kelly and one even.
00:41:49I see it about like that, too.
00:41:54But the one consistent thread there
00:41:56is that all of you see Gaynor
00:41:58in control of the fight on the scorecards,
00:42:00which was exactly the case two years ago
00:42:03when Kelly knocked him out in the eighth round.
00:42:05Kelly is absolutely controlling the fight.
00:42:12He didn't call it here and there,
00:42:13but he's in control of the fight.
00:42:15Kelly is, George?
00:42:17Yeah, he's not.
00:42:17He's the one that's making the fight.
00:42:19He's jabbing.
00:42:20He's throwing his jab
00:42:21when nothing else is happening.
00:42:23Stop pushing now, Demer.
00:42:23Weaving to get closer.
00:42:25He's trying to make the fight.
00:42:26That's right.
00:42:27That's it.
00:42:27If that's what you mean, yes.
00:42:29But Gaynor isn't letting him.
00:42:31I like all those little things
00:42:35Kelly, little things Kelly's doing.
00:42:38They're inactive inside,
00:42:39reaches up every now and then to the head.
00:42:42Watch your head.
00:42:43Yeah, but I don't think
00:42:44those are the kinds of things, George,
00:42:45that are going to get judges
00:42:46to give him rounds.
00:42:48If I'm a judge,
00:42:49I can see more sometimes
00:42:50if you're real objective,
00:42:51I can see two rounds
00:42:52of more going to Kelly.
00:42:56Those little shots like that
00:42:57that no one's paying much attention to.
00:42:59Whoa!
00:43:01Those shots mean something.
00:43:03Those are the shots
00:43:04that really mean something.
00:43:05Kelly switches to a conventional stance
00:43:07for a moment,
00:43:08but Gaynor was ripping him
00:43:10with left crosses.
00:43:12Now, this is a better conditioned
00:43:14Derrick Gaynor, I believe, also,
00:43:17George, than he was in the first fight.
00:43:19He swears that he did not run at all
00:43:21before the first fight.
00:43:23That's a real knockdown.
00:43:25Yep.
00:43:25That's the garden variety right there.
00:43:28Accumulation of punishment.
00:43:30Seven, eight, nine,
00:43:33There's a left uppercut.
00:43:36Come on.
00:43:37And if Kelly needed something
00:43:38of a weight cutter,
00:43:39he's got it now.
00:43:40Here he is.
00:43:41Kevin looks like he wants out.
00:43:43He's taken a long time
00:43:44to get himself back going.
00:43:47I don't know whether he was buying time or not,
00:43:49but walking around with a mouthpiece
00:43:50out of his mouth,
00:43:51that's what you do.
00:43:52You buy time.
00:43:53He did it.
00:43:53He looked like he wanted out,
00:43:59shaved a few seconds.
00:44:00Put the water on his head.
00:44:01He still is in it.
00:44:04Relax.
00:44:05Relax.
00:44:06Give me that towel, please.
00:44:07Give me that towel, please.
00:44:09Hello?
00:44:09Why are you doing that?
00:44:13Why are you doing that?
00:44:14Look at me.
00:44:15Why are you doing this, bro?
00:44:17Why are you doing this?
00:44:19Huh?
00:44:20Why are you doing that, man?
00:44:23Take a look.
00:44:23A right followed by a left.
00:44:28Kelly walked right into the punch.
00:44:33As he has gotten older,
00:44:34Kelly has been more vulnerable.
00:44:37Been knocked down half a dozen times
00:44:40in the last couple of years,
00:44:42and then much more than any time
00:44:44previous to that.
00:44:45One wide mid-air of the Panthers,
00:44:46because he's starting to pitch for him.
00:44:50So here comes the eighth round.
00:44:52And it was in the eighth round
00:44:54that Kevin Kelly knocked Derek Gaynor out
00:44:57two years ago in Florida.
00:44:59Can Gaynor turn the tables tonight?
00:45:04I'm just not sure Kelly has a chin left
00:45:07after all the punishment he's taken
00:45:10in the last couple of years.
00:45:11Well, that's what they call a shot fighter.
00:45:19No juice left.
00:45:20In the past, he's always bounced back
00:45:23from this sort of adversity.
00:45:26Can he now, at the age of 31, do the same?
00:45:2931.
00:45:30Man, that's baby talking.
00:45:34Refederate.
00:45:34It has nothing to do with the age.
00:45:36Not for a guy who has to make weight every time, George.
00:45:38These guys have to make weight,
00:45:39and they start and stretch their bodies to do it.
00:45:43It's different than you.
00:45:4431 is a baby.
00:45:46Forget it, guys.
00:45:47All right.
00:45:49We know where you're coming from.
00:45:52And I'm no different from anyone else.
00:45:55Now, Kelly.
00:45:58More trouble for Kelly
00:45:59as Gaynor has landed a left uppercut.
00:46:03Gaynor finding the range with the left hand
00:46:05in the last round and a half.
00:46:06You can see Gaynor thinking,
00:46:09I'm not going to do what I did the last time.
00:46:11I'm not going to go crazy.
00:46:18Right here, you can see that he's content
00:46:21to take the victory.
00:46:24If another opportunity comes to get Kelly,
00:46:26he'll take it,
00:46:27but he's not going to spend himself going after it.
00:46:30Kelly, all he has to do is get a little closer,
00:46:33start aiming his shots.
00:46:35I think he can really produce
00:46:37that same kind of devastation
00:46:38if he just stays a little closer.
00:46:41Don't step back.
00:46:42Well, Kevin looks like he's concerned
00:46:54about getting close to Gaynor now.
00:46:57Yeah, he has.
00:46:58He's got good, for good reasons.
00:47:00That Gaynor is a puncher.
00:47:02He has become a puncher.
00:47:03There was a time in his career
00:47:05when that wouldn't have been possible for him.
00:47:06I think that's pretty good.
00:47:10A guy knocks you down
00:47:11and then you keep him on the defense.
00:47:13You become the aggressive.
00:47:15That's what Kelly has done here.
00:47:20Well, but realistically,
00:47:21Kelly's going to have to get inside, George,
00:47:23and find a way to knock Derek Gaynor out again.
00:47:26That's the only way he can win the fight.
00:47:29He can only do it in an exchange.
00:47:32Catch him in the exchange.
00:47:33Well, he's got to get inside to create exchanges.
00:47:36More Gaynor punishment.
00:47:39There is now fire where there is smoke.
00:47:50Kelly must be hoping that Gaynor
00:47:52will get confident enough
00:47:53to go ahead and open up
00:47:54and try for the knockout
00:47:55because that's the chance he'll need.
00:48:01You promised me something that round.
00:48:03You did it a little bit, baby.
00:48:04Don't waste too much time waiting, okay?
00:48:05Just stay active.
00:48:07You got this guy scared to come in now.
00:48:09Just keep throwing punches.
00:48:11Keep throwing your jab
00:48:12and trapping him up with some good strong shots.
00:48:14You know what I'm talking about.
00:48:19It's going to be easy if you wrestle.
00:48:22Easy or fast.
00:48:23He tries to load that left hand.
00:48:25Big.
00:48:26Big time.
00:48:27He tries to load that left hand big time.
00:48:29What knocked him out last day?
00:48:30Let's smoke.
00:48:33Smoke Gaynor's left straight on the button.
00:48:37And here we see it again.
00:48:41I'm surprised that Kelly stood up to that fight, George,
00:48:44to that punch.
00:48:45Get the water for me, my friend.
00:48:47He was down 30 seconds later.
00:48:49Bill Borja telling Kevin Kelly to watch for Gaynor
00:48:56to try to load the left hand.
00:49:01He must be preparing a counter right
00:49:03or hoping for it.
00:49:13Gaynor giving every indication here
00:49:15that he won't be trading in these last two rounds.
00:49:23Jabbing and moving.
00:49:26Jabbing and moving with the bout safely in hand.
00:49:29So it would seem.
00:49:32At this point in time,
00:49:35he's gotten revenge for the first fight.
00:49:38It's his fight to lose now.
00:49:41In the last fight, he made Kelly mad.
00:49:43This time, they seem to be friends.
00:49:45They've spent a lot of time on the phone together.
00:49:47Touching gloves over and over.
00:49:52Well, Kevin is such a genuinely nice person.
00:49:55I think it's very hard for him to dislike opponents.
00:49:58He tried to dislike Prince Nassim
00:50:00and couldn't really do it.
00:50:02He found Nassim entertaining.
00:50:05Which he is.
00:50:11Gaynor gets away
00:50:12as Kelly tried to lure him into a corner.
00:50:15Now Gaynor's starting to be effective
00:50:21with his right jab.
00:50:23That's what you don't want.
00:50:28He ever gets that jab working.
00:50:29He can do that all night.
00:50:32This is what I thought he'd do in the first round.
00:50:34He showed flashes of it,
00:50:37but he's really moved away from it much of the night.
00:50:40And that's worked well for him, too.
00:50:42When he's moving,
00:50:43Kelly can't find him at all.
00:50:45No doubt about it.
00:50:46But the one thing he's showing after the knockdown
00:50:48and effective punches,
00:50:49he's still running away.
00:50:50So it gives Kelly this confidence.
00:50:52Like, I can still knock him out.
00:50:53He's afraid.
00:50:56Yeah, but confidence is one thing.
00:50:58Opportunities to make contact with the gloves
00:51:00or another.
00:51:01There you go.
00:51:04Oh, stop that, Kevin.
00:51:06Kevin Kelly has not landed a single punch
00:51:08in the first two minutes of round number nine.
00:51:11And he just can't get close enough.
00:51:13That's right.
00:51:14Can't get close enough
00:51:15because Gaynor's moving
00:51:16and sticking the jab.
00:51:17And Kevin's right eye is closing again.
00:51:19Although by this point,
00:51:21it's probably Moots.
00:51:23Well, Kevin Kelly is two years older
00:51:25than the last time
00:51:26and Smoke Gaynor is two years better.
00:51:30Well said.
00:51:40Now Gaynor's playing the counterpuncher.
00:51:43Miss me and I'll make you pay.
00:51:45Take this jab in the meantime.
00:51:47If this continues the way it's been
00:51:51up to this point,
00:51:52it'll put a serious crimp
00:51:54in any Kelly plans
00:51:55to try to seek
00:51:56a Prince Nassim Hamed rematch.
00:51:59And it will certainly start Gaynor
00:52:00talking about his desire
00:52:02to fight the Prince.
00:52:04You got one more.
00:52:05You got it, okay?
00:52:06I want you to keep touching it
00:52:07with that jab.
00:52:08If you make a mistake,
00:52:09you lay that dude right,
00:52:09left hand on him.
00:52:10He coming.
00:52:11It's the last round.
00:52:12They probably gonna put him on you.
00:52:13Look, if he run,
00:52:15throw that left upper cut
00:52:16and left right hook.
00:52:17You understand?
00:52:18You understand now?
00:52:20You are a world champion.
00:52:22You work off-white
00:52:23and you let rock up.
00:52:24This is the last round?
00:52:24This is it, kid.
00:52:25This is it.
00:52:27You touch it up.
00:52:28Who wants it?
00:52:28Do you got me?
00:52:29Yeah, baby.
00:52:30Keep your chill for me.
00:52:32You got plenty.
00:52:32Touch it up.
00:52:33Who wants it?
00:52:33Okay, hit and don't get hit, baby.
00:52:35Hit and don't get hit.
00:52:36Give me something.
00:52:36Give me something.
00:52:37Give it up, baby.
00:52:38No.
00:52:39You still do this, baby.
00:52:41You got the time.
00:52:43Boom.
00:52:45Hey, George.
00:52:45Good luck.
00:52:46Right here.
00:52:46Come on, man.
00:52:48Let's go.
00:52:50Kelly asked and was told,
00:52:52yes, it is the last round.
00:52:54Let's go.
00:52:54Let's go.
00:52:55That's the belt.
00:52:55They hug before the start
00:52:57of the 10th round.
00:52:58Nah, this should not have been for Kelly.
00:53:01Made friends too soon.
00:53:02Well, as you pointed out earlier, Jim, the Yankees and the Mets won today, but right now it looks
00:53:30like Pensacola won.
00:53:32Let's keep it clean.
00:53:32Let's keep it clean.
00:53:32Last round.
00:53:33New York nothing.
00:53:35With yet another Pensacola-New York matchup to follow.
00:53:38Yep.
00:53:41A doubleheader in the theater at Madison Square Garden.
00:53:44Kelly just has not had hunger.
00:53:48He didn't come out there hungry tonight.
00:53:52And Larry suggested earlier, George, not on the telecast, but we were talking privately
00:53:56that he thinks deep in his heart Kevin Kelly is headed toward that next career.
00:54:01Maybe as a ringside commentator, the kid loves to talk and talks so well about the sport.
00:54:07And that moving to Las Vegas, which he's planning to do, may help to facilitate that.
00:54:12Now, a great old football player, Norm Van Brocklin, once told me that when you start to think
00:54:19about retirement, you are retired.
00:54:25Moving to Las Vegas, talking about his next career, and Derek Gaynor is hurrying him toward
00:54:33that goal.
00:54:35I don't think Gaynor's done a whole lot.
00:54:37Kelly just has not done anything.
00:54:39He never found a way to get inside.
00:54:45He never found a way to make contact anywhere other than on the ropes when Gaynor stood there
00:54:51and allowed him to do so.
00:54:54Kevin just has not been able to best Derek Gaynor in any area.
00:55:02Oh, break!
00:55:03Break.
00:55:04Step back.
00:55:05We don't know if this is the last chapter of the Kevin Kelly story.
00:55:13We've seen too many comebacks, too many strange things happen in boxing to say so.
00:55:20But it certainly is at least one of the last chapters in what has been an outstanding 10-year
00:55:27professional career.
00:55:33And after six consecutive knockout wins, Derek Gaynor heads toward what will probably be
00:55:39a win of a different sort, the kind that was more typical of his earlier career.
00:55:45But as Larry pointed out in the early rounds, it was abundantly clear that Gaynor didn't care
00:55:51much how the fight looked.
00:55:53He only cared who won.
00:56:00A couple of good guys who clearly have learned to get along with each other in the two years
00:56:07since first they fought.
00:56:09Good guys, but Larry said it was not a good fight.
00:56:13Now, we'll see something different in the next fight.
00:56:24Final scorecard from Harold Letterman.
00:56:26Was it a shutout, Harold?
00:56:27Jim, I tell you, I don't think Derek Gaynor did much at all in that last round.
00:56:30They gave it to Kevin Kelly.
00:56:31I thought the few punches that were landed, Kevin landed.
00:56:33They had a 99-89, nine rounds to one.
00:56:35And Derek smoked Gaynor.
00:56:37I mean, as I saw it, Kevin just never jumped on him.
00:56:39He wasn't motivated.
00:56:41George called it hunger, I think.
00:56:42I mean, you know, you got to be motivated.
00:56:44You get inside, jump on him, land some shots.
00:56:46Kevin would get inside, throw one punch, and stop.
00:56:49To me, Derek Gaynor completely outboxed him.
00:56:51Good movement by Derek Gaynor.
00:56:53Good punching.
00:56:54I thought he scored two clean knockdowns.
00:56:56What can you say?
00:56:57It's all Derek smoked Gaynor.
00:57:00And let's take a look at what could be critical if any of the scoring is close.
00:57:04The two knockdowns in the fight.
00:57:06Round one, Larry Merchant didn't think this was a knockdown.
00:57:09Harold Letterman says that it is.
00:57:11I think it's a pretty tough call either way.
00:57:13Round seven, this is most definitely a knockdown.
00:57:17Good scooping left hand coming up and under from Derek Gaynor.
00:57:21And that followed a series of other left hands,
00:57:23which had put Kelly less in touch with his senses than he wanted to be.
00:57:28Number one in the world?
00:57:29Number one in the world?
00:57:30Number one's got to fight you now.
00:57:31You got to fight you now.
00:57:32You got to fight you now.
00:57:32You think now there's victories?
00:57:34I got to be 44, 45, 45.
00:57:37I got to be 45, 45.
00:57:38I got to be 45, 45.
00:57:39I got to be 45.
00:57:40I got to be 45, 45.
00:57:41I got to be 45, 45.
00:57:41You got to be 45, 45.
00:57:42Thank God, baby.
00:57:44You're a man.
00:57:46You're our man.
00:57:47Yes.
00:57:47Bitch!
00:57:48Good to go, bitch.
00:57:49Gaynor waiting expectantly, and hopefully you see the tears
00:57:53from the young man who says that his loss to Kelly two years ago
00:57:58cost him sleep for the entire two-year period.
00:58:02And he said that wouldn't stop until tonight.
00:58:04Let's go to Michael Buffer for the official particulars.
00:58:09Ladies and gentlemen, we go to the Budweiser scorecards.
00:58:13Luis Rivera scores the belt 96 to 94.
00:58:17Joe Dwyer has it 96 to 93.
00:58:19And Don Ackerman scores it 96 to 92.
00:58:23For the winner by unanimous decision, Derrick Smoke Gaynor.
00:58:36Pretty lousy fight.
00:58:38Only 57 punches from the two fighters in the last round
00:58:41as it was not exactly a rousing show closer.
00:58:46But an easy win for Derrick Gaynor.
00:58:48The official score is much closer than that of Harold Letterman.
00:58:54And Kevin Kelly will get a nice round of applause
00:58:56from his supporters and the audience.
00:58:59We'll take a look at final punch stat numbers.
00:59:03From a non-artistic battle won by Gaynor.
00:59:08102 punches landed by Gaynor.
00:59:1080 punches landed by Kelly.
00:59:11That's an average of only 18 punches landed per round.
00:59:13Not pretty.
00:59:15Out of a total of 673 punches thrown in the fight.
00:59:19Very low connect percentages.
00:59:21Jabs.
00:59:23Well, you know, I mean, what can you say?
00:59:26They landed a total of 63 jabs in the fight.
00:59:2917%.
00:59:29That means they were missing 83% of the time.
00:59:33It wasn't pretty.
00:59:34Let's go to Larry Merchant.
00:59:35Hey, I'm swole.
00:59:36What's up?
00:59:37Thank you very much, Jim.
00:59:38Derrick, congratulations.
00:59:41Will you be able to sleep now after two years of tossing and turning over the first fight with Kevin?
00:59:48Yes.
00:59:49First of all, I thank my Lord, Savior Jesus Christ.
00:59:50Give me shit to do what I do.
00:59:52I'm glad it's finally over.
00:59:53Kevin Kelly was a great champion.
00:59:55I felt like I could have took him out, but I didn't want to take a chance and get caught with another shot.
00:59:59So now I can sleep a little bit.
01:00:01Thank you very much, Derrick.
01:00:03Kevin, it wasn't there tonight.
01:00:06Will we see you in the ring again?
01:00:08Yeah, of course.
01:00:08You know, like I said, you know, I was contemplating one year, more year of boxing.
01:00:11Pretty much.
01:00:12I told my wife, I said, I got 53 pro fights.
01:00:14I got a lot of fights, a lot of wars.
01:00:15Had a good one with Derrick.
01:00:16It was a good fight with Derrick.
01:00:18You know, I got to go home and watch the tape and see exactly what I did wrong and right.
01:00:21He's a hell of a fighter.
01:00:22You know, everybody has a Frasier Ali, and I think me and him have been Frasier Ali.
01:00:26We lived in the 90s, and I think he's a hell of a fighter.
01:00:28He's young, and he's got a lot of experience.
01:00:31Thank you very much, Kevin.
01:00:32Jim.
01:00:34All right.
01:00:35Gracefully done, Kevin Kelly.
01:00:37Final scores from the three judges, 96-94, 96-93, 96-92.
01:00:44So each one of those judges found a way for Kelly to win four rounds.
01:00:48And the unanimous decision victory moves Gaynor forward in his career
01:00:54and moves us forward toward the second fight of the evening,
01:00:57but not before a few words about the big sports weekend.
01:00:59The sport of amateur boxing still in some ways recovering from the atrocity of 1988
01:01:05when in Seoul, South Korea, the brilliant Roy Jones fought his way to an apparent gold medal,
01:01:11but left without one after the atrocious decision that gave his gold medal to a Korean fighter.
