00:01Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport.
00:08The thrill of victory.
00:16And the agony of defeat.
00:21The human drama of athletic competition.
00:24This is ABC's Wide World of Sports.
00:36That is a live shot here in Poughkeepsie, New York, where the weather outside is not just frightful,
00:43it is downright dangerous as a weather emergency has been issued.
00:48Up to two feet of snow expected here in the mid Hudson Valley.
00:54Hello everyone, I'm Dan Dierdorf and welcome to ABC's Wide World of Sports.
01:00Today we'll present live a 12-round world championship super bantamweight fight
01:04between Tracy Patterson and Jesse Benavides on the Quaker State Professional Boxing Series.
01:09Now Tracy, the son of former great heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson,
01:13will be making his second title defense.
01:15But before we get to the fight, how about if we join my colleagues Sam Posey and Donna DeVarona
01:20for more on our coverage of the Iditarod Trail sled dog race.
01:24Still to come on Wide World of Sports, the Quaker State Professional Boxing Series
01:27presents the super bantamweight championship fight between Tracy Patterson and Jesse Benavides.
01:32But now it's time for a regular feature on what's new in the world of sports science and technology.
01:40Welcome back to Poughkeepsie, everybody.
01:42We need to remind you that due to severe weather conditions,
01:45tomorrow's Motorcraft 500 has been postponed.
01:48But we will be on the air at 1 o'clock with a look back at last year's exciting race.
01:53Then at 5 o'clock Eastern, the world's top drivers will compete in Daytona
01:56for the first challenge of the international race of champions.
02:01Well, we're back here in Poughkeepsie, New York,
02:03getting ready for the 12-round super bantamweight championship fight
02:06that's coming up between Tracy Patterson and Jesse Benavides.
02:10But obviously, the weather here is a large factor.
02:14We are in the midst of not only a brutal snowstorm,
02:17which comes as no surprise to anyone on the eastern seaboard,
02:21but we're in the midst of an electrical storm here in Poughkeepsie as well.
02:24And it was to be a tremendous advantage here crowd-wise for Tracy Patterson.
02:29But the bridge to his hometown across the Hudson has been closed,
02:32and it is really going to curtail the number of folks in attendance here this afternoon.
02:37There is Patterson on the left and on the right, Jesse Benavides,
02:41who's a huge Dallas Cowboys fan and views this as just one more Texas-New York State matchup,
02:48and he says that Texas will be the winner once again.
02:52So coming up on our Quaker State Professional Boxing Series,
02:55Patterson and Benavides for the WBC super bantamweight title.
03:00Right now, though, we're going to dial you in to the sport of rugby.
03:03Now, we all know that NFL players are tough, at least I hope so.
03:06Well, I'll tell you, so are these guys from across the ocean.
03:09And if I guess I could borrow a line from Hank Williams, Jr., it would be,
03:13are you ready for some rugby night football?
03:20There is Floyd Patterson, who, when he was 21 years old,
03:25took the heavyweight title from Archie Moore,
03:27and he's jogging there with his son, Tracy Patterson,
03:30who today makes his second title defense.
03:33They live in Highland, New York, on the other side of the Hudson River.
03:38They have come across the bridge before they closed it to Poe Town, which is Poughkeepsie.
03:43And as you can see outside, the weather is just downright horrible.
03:47It's deteriorating as we speak.
03:50We're in the midst of a thunderstorm,
03:51but we're inside the James McCann Recreation Center for 12 rounds of boxing.
03:57The WBC Super Vantamweight title fight here on our Quaker State Professional Boxing Series
04:04between Tracy Patterson and Jesse Benavides.
04:08Good afternoon, everybody, and I hope you're safe and warm.
04:12As you know, the eastern part of the country is being pounded by a winter storm,
04:15and we are certainly no exception here in Poughkeepsie, New York.
04:19Now, this is a continuation of our Quaker State Boxing Series,
04:22and as you know, the last couple of weeks, we've been spending time with the heavyweights.
04:26Today, we're going to shed about 100 pounds per man as we drop down to the Super Vantamweights.
04:31And Alex Swallow, here at my side, my partner as always,
04:35when we work boxing, we always talk about father-son combination.
04:40We've never seen a father-son combination like the Pattersons.
04:44Remarkably, the only father-son combination in the history of boxing
04:46to both be title holders in different divisions, in any division taken.
04:50Yeah, it really is surprising.
04:52This is the first family of boxing, the Pattersons.
04:55I think, Dan, until last year, when Tracy won a world title,
04:58I think the top of the list of fathers and sons in terms of career accomplishments
05:02were former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier and his son Marvis,
05:06who was a world-class heavyweight but never a champion.
05:08In terms of father-son combinations as manager and fighter,
05:12it is an accepted boxing truth that fathers make lousy managers.
05:16I think the fact that Floyd Patterson was a world champion himself
05:20means that he does not fall into the trap of trying to live his life through his son.
05:24And when some critics say that Floyd has overprotected his son,
05:27Tracy had 45 fights before Floyd let him fight for a title.
05:31Floyd says the proof is in the pudding.
05:32My boy is a champion.
05:34As for the challenger, Jesse Benavidez out of Corpus Christi, Texas.
05:39We're going to go to Jesse's dressing room.
05:42There you see him right there in the southpaw stance.
05:44Jesse had an outstanding amateur career fighting out of Corpus Christi, Texas.
05:48Over 300 bouts, five national titles,
05:51and an impressive record as a pro against really superior opposition to Tracy Patterson's.
05:58But at age 29, Jesse appears to be on the downside of his career.
06:04Jesse responds, I'm not finished.
06:05I just needed the motivation, Dan, of a world championship fight.
06:09He's waited a long time for me.
06:10He says he's going to make the most of it.
06:12And he's going to get it here, Alex, in just a couple of minutes.
06:14And there will be action.
06:15And as you know, Alex, the action that takes place in the ring
06:18is really what draws most people to boxing.
06:20But the sport also changes the lives of its participants.
06:24Some of those for the worse, some of them for the better.
06:26And for Tracy and Floyd Patterson,
06:28their lives have changed for the better together.
06:31Marianne Grabovoy reports.
06:33He was unlike any other kid, because he was always alone.
06:49He seemed like a kid who was lost.
06:51As a kid growing up in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy projects,
06:54Floyd Patterson knew what being lost felt like.
06:57He knew need, and he knew desperation.
06:59Sometimes you have to live through something to really know the need.
07:04All you want is someone that cares, you see.
07:08And that's what my son went in.
07:10That's what I gave him.
07:12And in the eyes of a kid called Tracy,
07:14Floyd Patterson saw the reflection of another man.
07:17He saw himself.
07:18It sort of brought me back to my own childhood.
07:21I decided that I wanted to be his father.
07:24And I'm very, very happy to this day that I did adopt him.
07:29In 1956, Floyd Patterson became the youngest world heavyweight champion in history.
07:35Just 21 years old, an Olympic gold medal already under his belt,
07:39Gentleman Floyd would also become the first man ever to lose and regain the heavyweight title.
07:44Boxing immortality was his, but Floyd Patterson thirsted for something more,
07:49and he found it in a son.
07:51It was 17 years ago that a shy but curious 11-year-old wandered into this drafty old gym.
07:59A mere 70 pounds at the time,
08:01Tracy stood in awe of the man who called this place home,
08:04a figure larger than life by the name of Floyd Patterson.
08:08For Tracy, it was hard to imagine that a former heavyweight champion of the world
08:13would take him under his wing.
08:15It was even more unimaginable that one day he would call him son.
08:21I've always looked up to him as a dad anyway,
08:24so it was, you know, no big deal for us to go ahead and go ahead on and do the adoption
08:30because I fell in love with him and he fell in love with me.
08:34Tracy barely knew his biological father.
08:36His mother worked hard to raise six sons
08:38but moved the family from New York back home to Alabama when times got tough.
08:42Everyone, that is, except Tracy, who chose to stay with Floyd and learn to box.
08:47I felt it. I was, you know, blessed by having Floyd Patterson come into my life
08:52and taking me over as his son.
08:56It was a gift from somewhere, so it's got to be a gift from God.
09:02How I know that this is what he really wanted
09:04is because everywhere we would go,
09:11I would hear him say, that's my father, you see.
09:15And, um...
09:18Very touching.
09:25It's pretty lovely.
09:26Okay.
09:26Okay.
09:34What does Tracy mean to you?
09:36Everything.
09:41I don't know how these people got here in the weather,
09:44but they are on their feet for their hometown champion, Tracy Patterson,
09:49led by his father, making his way into the ring here
09:54on the campus of Marist College.
09:56And listen to this crowd.
09:57His opponent today is Jesse Benavides,
10:15and a man who's certainly faced world-class competition before
10:20all around the world,
10:21and at 29 years of age,
10:23he's well aware of the importance of today's fight.
10:25It is a very important fight at this stage.
10:29I think it's...
10:30I don't know if you call it a make-or-break fight,
10:32but it is very important that I win it now,
10:35and that way I can defend as long as I can,
10:39and then I'll retire and never look back.
10:45Well, both fighters are in the ring.
10:47We'll take a timeout.
10:48When we come back, we'll get this thing on.
10:51He is a former USBA...
10:54We are back here at the McCann Recreation Center in Poughkeepsie, New York,
10:58for Tracy Patterson and Jesse Benavides.
11:01Let's go ahead and check the tail of the tape.
11:03You'll see Benavides is only one year older,
11:05identical until you get to the reach where the advantage falls to Tracy Patterson.
11:10The rules for today's fight will be the WBC version.
11:15Scoring is on the 10-point mug system.
11:17The three-knockdown is not in effect.
11:19The standing eight is.
11:21A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
11:23and both the referee and the doctor can and may stop the bout.
11:30There is Tracy Patterson being introduced to the crowd.
11:33There must be an awful lot of four-wheel drive vehicles in Poughkeepsie, New York to get here in this weather.
11:58We expect you to obey these rules.
11:59Let's have a nice clean fight.
12:00Arthur McCann, Jr. is our referee today, giving instructions to the fighters.
12:05This is his sixth title fight.
12:08And Alex, we're ready to go.
12:10Dan, I think the key fact may well be the fact that Tracy Patterson,
12:14who you see there, has a decided edge in power.
12:17He's just stronger than Jesse, and Jesse's going to have to use all the boxing skill that he has
12:23and hope that he's in condition to be able to avoid that power
12:27and also to try to catch Tracy when he's coming in.
12:32Jesse says if you don't make them respect your power, they'll just walk all over you.
12:37Movement has benefited his key.
12:39There's no doubt that he likes to move.
12:41Move his head, move his body, move his legs, come in,
12:44almost like guerrilla warfare, and throw a combination and get back out of power's range.
12:50Tracy really, I'm sorry, Jesse really needs to dictate the pace, Dan.
12:54He really likes to fight just kind of this pace right now, not that right-handed later,
12:58but he likes a very measured pace where he can get in, flurry, and get out and avoid the power.
13:03Tracy generally is a pressure fighter.
13:06His style is to come in and let fly with both hands.
13:08And I think we're only a minute into the fight.
13:11I think good left there, good left lead by Jesse Benavides.
13:15The other factor, remember, Dan, is that both men have chins that have been called suspect.
13:20They've both been down in their careers more than once, and neither man has a granite chin.
13:25So it could well be who gets the power punch on first as a big advantage
13:31in terms of taking the other guy out of the fight plan.
13:33Benavides, the southpaw, has landed a couple good lefts, but Patterson is not pressing the issue.
13:42Again, a lot of pressure on this young man being here in his hometown
13:46and all the attention that has come with it.
13:50Already an abrasion under the eye, the right eye of Jesse Benavides.
13:56Jesse is prone to swelling around the eyes.
13:58We'd like to alert our stations down the line.
14:03We'll be taking a station break at the end of this round.
14:07This is the first.
14:09We should talk about the fact that Jesse Benavides is a southpaw, as we said at the top.
14:15Tracy says that that will not be a factor here
14:17because I've fought left-handers in three of my last five fights.
14:20But we should point out, Dan, that in two of those, they were one-round whack-outs.
14:23They really didn't, you know, it didn't make any difference whether the guy was, what the dancing guy took.
14:28And now the southpaw is the capable fighter that Jesse Benavides is.
14:35And the fact is that in his last fight,
14:42when Tracy defended his title against former champion Daniel Zaragoza, who was a left-hander,
14:48the fight went the distance, and Tracy was not impressive when Zaragoza stood up to his power.
14:52He did not dominate that balance.
14:55And that fight ended in a draw.
14:56Keep it clean.
14:58A draw meaning that Tracy kept his title there.
15:02There you see the combinations of...
15:04Oh, there was a good sweeping left by Patterson.
15:08Another good left.
15:10We'll return after a word from our ABC station.
15:14The blizzard warning remains in effect through tonight and into tomorrow.
15:19You gotta ring that bell louder!
15:20Arthur McCanty yelling at the keeper of the bell to ring it a little louder.
15:26Benavides is a little late coming out of his corner for the beginning here of the second round in Poughkeepsie, New York.
15:32And you're right, Alex, you called that an abrasion underneath Benavides' eye,
15:37and it is more of an abrasion.
15:39It is not a slice.
15:41Oh, there is a good solid left hand by Patterson.
15:43And you see Jesse jump in with the right jab.
15:47That swelling under the left eye as well of Jesse Benavides, Dan.
15:52He's used to this happening, but not this early.
15:54This is awfully early for that much damage to be seen on his face.
15:57There.
15:57Oh, another left leg by Jesse.
15:59Oh, it sure was.
16:00And the swelling, Alex, doesn't appear to be coming from a lot of solid punches.
16:06I mean, he didn't take any jarring blows there in the first round.
16:10And it left from Patterson's sail high.
16:12Very patient by Tracy Patterson here.
16:15Oh, good combination by Tracy Patterson.
16:17Patterson pulls Benavides into the clinch, and they're separated by Mercanthe.
16:33Again, he grabs on, and Benavides fights his way out.
16:37About four or five punches thrown in a row by Patterson, missing every one.
16:47Yeah, that's exactly right.
16:49Break!
16:50Break!
16:51Step back.
16:52He was not able to take advantage of the fact that he had Jesse up against the ropes.
16:58You see the defensive work there by Tracy Patterson.
17:00We talked to him yesterday, Dan, and he said, we asked him,
17:03what would it take for you to become a complete fighter?
17:05And he said, I have to work on my defense.
17:09We said, you're going to be thinking so much about your defense,
17:11Tracy, it's going to let your hands go.
17:12And he said, I can't do that.
17:14I have to make it natural.
17:15Well, he's certainly been more adept at letting the hands flow freely here in the second round.
17:22A reminder again that we're here in Poughkeepsie, New York,
17:25which is just one mile across the river from Patterson's hometown of Highland.
17:30And so, needless to say, this is a very pro-Patterson crowd,
17:34and not a lot of folks from Corpus Christi made it up there.
17:38You know, Dan, but Jesse Benavis has fought so much around the world.
17:41I mean, he fought Cubans in Cuba.
17:42You can't get much more hostile crowd than that.
17:44He's used to that.
17:45I don't think the crowd will affect him.
17:46The question is, if the fight goes the distance, will the crowd affect the judges?
17:50Close inside fighting by both men here in the closing seconds of the second round.
18:00We should point out, Dan, as you mentioned at the top of the show,
18:02all three judges from New York.
18:07I'm sorry, three officials from New York, the referee and two of the judges.
18:10Coming to the end of round number two.
18:20And the bell just sounds to start round number three here in New York.
18:25Tracy Patterson there on the left of your screen.
18:27Jesse Benavis is on the right.
18:29And where the first round was cautiously fought by both fighters,
18:38the second round a little more freewheeling.
18:42We'll monitor closely that abrasion underneath the right eye of Benavis.
18:47Obviously, they worked in the corner.
18:48Tony Aiella Sr. worked in the corner on the end swell,
18:52the cold piece of metal to try to keep that swelling under control.
18:55The best way to do it, Dan, is for Jesse to make Tracy miss some of those right hands that he's been landing.
19:04Tough to find a manager and a trainer more famous than that man.
19:08Lloyd Patterson, former heavyweight champion of the world,
19:13the youngest to win it at the time at only 21,
19:15the first to regain the title.
19:18And quite a man.
19:20And immensely proud of his son,
19:22who's defending his title in the ring right now,
19:24and a good, solid left to the body by Patterson.
19:30Did that hurt Benavis?
19:31Oh, it sure did.
19:32You know, Jesse was inside with landing a three-punch combination,
19:36but they were pity-pad punches that kind of used in such good effect as an amateur.
19:40But they just seemed to annoy Tracy, who unloaded, as you pointed out, Dan,
19:43a really vicious left to the body, and Jesse ran away.
19:47I mean, he just wanted to jump.
19:48I have seen cornerbacks in the NFL that don't backpedal that quickly,
19:52all the way back into the corner.
19:55But Jesse's determined.
19:56You see the focus there.
19:57I mean, he just is going to give everything he has.
19:59I really believe that.
20:0029 years old, probably his last shot.
20:04He's waited a long time for it.
20:07For the first time, he went down to Mexico,
20:10in the mountains of Monterey, Mexico.
20:12Dan, to train for three weeks.
20:15But he ran the mountains down there, Alex,
20:17saying the key to everything is the condition of his legs.
20:21Yeah, and it's more of a key for him, even, Dan,
20:23because he needs the movement to stay away from Tracy's power.
20:26And we've watched tapes of Benavides in the past, Alex.
20:29He's not moving quite as much in this fight
20:31as he has in some of the others we've watched.
20:34But you know, Dan, he's moving a little bit better
20:35than he has in his last three or four fights.
20:38What a good right hand there for Patrick.
20:40Oh, there's a good right hand again.
20:42And you saw it rock the head of Benavides.
20:45Fight, fight, fight, sit back.
20:48Well, when you see the head snap back like that,
20:50even though we were behind it,
20:52you know it was effective.
20:55And again, you can see a three-punch combination
20:57by Benavides just making some noise
21:00but not appearing to really have an impact on Patterson.
21:03Dan, we should give Jesse Benavides some credit.
21:06A lot of people question his chin.
21:07A lot of people say his legs are gone.
21:10You know, he's in condition.
21:11He's ready to take the punishment.
21:13He's in there pitching.
21:13He has not gone down as I would have expected
21:15from those kind of punchers.
21:17This is the end of the third.
21:18We're scheduled for a dozen.
21:20If there's anyone who can appreciate
21:27the Comfort Loom waistband,
21:29it's Riddick Bowe.
21:31Here, Daddy.
21:33Thanks, Junior.
21:34Fruit of the Loom has woven thousands of softness fibers
21:37into a cushion of comfort so gentle on the skin
21:39you can barely feel it.
21:40Feel better now, Daddy?
21:42Much better than the other guy, Junior.
21:45Comfort Loom from Fruit of the Loom.
21:48Clothes for the best of your life.
21:50Arthur Mercanty, Junior, one of the most storied names
21:55and refereeing history brings the fighters
21:58out in for the beginning of the fourth round.
22:01Dan Dierdorf, Alex Wallo, ringside with you here
22:04from Poughkeepsie, New York.
22:06We're on our Quaker State Professional Boxing Series
22:08here on ABC's Wide World of Sports.
22:15Tracy Patterson on the left, Dan, so far dominating
22:19and dominating more and more each round, I think.
22:22I think Tracy...
22:23I'm sorry.
22:24I think Jesse might have, you know,
22:26stored some punches in that second round.
22:29It might have been a close round,
22:30but that third round was kind of a takeover round.
22:31Right now, Jesse has to hurt Tracy with something
22:35to get his respect.
22:36Otherwise, he's just going to walk through him.
22:40If there have been only three or four punches
22:43that appear to really hurt the opponent,
22:46all of them have been thrown by Tracy Patterson.
22:48Another good digging left hook to the body
22:59by Tracy Patterson.
23:01Back to that same point.
23:03Tracy scored a left lead.
23:04Now, the question is, do those right jabs...
23:06I'm sorry, Jesse scored with her left lead.
23:08The question is, do those jabs impress the judges?
23:11They really don't have much power.
23:13You see some basketball scores,
23:15they flashed at you.
23:16They'll keep you up to date on what's happening
23:18in various tournaments around the country.
23:24Good jabs by Tracy.
23:25Good series of jabs.
23:29Oh, and another good right counter by Patterson.
23:33Got over the left hand of Benavides.
23:37Jesse kind of fell in with a left.
23:40Didn't really have much conviction behind it,
23:42and you better not do that.
23:43He really paid a price.
23:45Gainley, Benavides fighting back.
23:48And this is a very controlled Tracy Patterson.
23:54Step back.
23:55Watch your head.
23:57I mean, certainly fighting within himself.
24:00Not getting wild, getting reckless,
24:02but nonetheless, look at the accuracy of his punches
24:05and how that accuracy percentage is increasing
24:09as this fight goes along.
24:13Okay, break.
24:16Tracy Patterson, the weight limit for this fight,
24:19122 pounds.
24:21Patterson telling us yesterday,
24:22with the WBC, you're allowed to weigh in
24:2524 hours prior to the fight.
24:26He said, I'll be at least 132
24:28by flight time and putting him on 10 pounds
24:32in 24 hours, Alex.
24:34Not easily done.
24:36Watch me.
24:37A lot of fun.
24:38A lot of fun, but not easily done.
24:40You know, he's bigger,
24:42and he's just so much stronger, Dan.
24:43We talked about it,
24:44and it's really the key right now.
24:45Tracy Patterson on the left
24:46having a big edge in power.
24:48This is the end of the fourth round, folks.
24:50We'll be back.
24:55Alex, we're a third of the way
24:56through this fight as we begin the fifth round,
24:59and I'm not sure that Jesse Benavides
25:02can take another eight rounds
25:04of the pounding that he's taken
25:05in the third and the fourth round.
25:07He can't.
25:08Yeah.
25:08I mean, he's got to find a way
25:09to either avoid the punches
25:11or land some of his own
25:13that make Tracy hesitate a little bit.
25:15I'm just trying to be a little bit speculative.
25:18This is the 50th professional bout
25:24for Tracy Patterson
25:26who didn't win his title
25:30until his 47th fight,
25:31which is a long, long time to go
25:33before winning a title.
25:35And you know the funny thing about Tracy?
25:37Most fighters move up in weight
25:38as their career goes along.
25:39He has moved down in weight.
25:40He was initially world-ranked
25:42as a 130-pound fighter back in 89.
25:45Now he's down to 122,
25:46and he's stayed at that weight for a while.
25:48He jumped two weight classes
25:49between yesterday and today.
25:51Right.
25:54Says he wants to fight as a featherweight,
25:56try to win that title also,
25:57but he thinks he can keep this weight
25:58for at least two more defenses
25:59if he's successful here today.
26:02Benavides sticks that head out.
26:04He's leading with his head
26:05and paying a very terrible price for it.
26:08A couple good body shots there
26:09by Benavides who follows up.
26:11But he's leading with that head
26:12and Patterson is just having his way with it.
26:15You know something, Dan?
26:16Jesse Benavides in his prime
26:18would have landed that flurry
26:20that you just pointed out
26:21and then gotten out of there.
26:22And then backed up and go.
26:23Backed out.
26:24He may just not have the legs
26:25to do it at this stage of his career.
26:27He should not be standing
26:29in front of a guy
26:29who's got as big an edge of power
26:31as Tracy Patterson has.
26:36You can see that Benavides
26:37does have good head movement
26:39and does make you miss.
26:41You know one thing
26:41he should be doing inside there, Dan?
26:43He just threw one with his left.
26:44Tracy Patterson,
26:45because of the way he holds his gloves,
26:47a little bit reminiscent
26:48of his father's peek-a-boo stance,
26:49should be coming right up the middle
26:51with a right uppercut.
26:53He's got one.
26:54He just has not thrown it on the inside.
26:56He should really try to let it go.
26:59Benavides' biggest win
27:00might have been against Jesus Salud.
27:03And in that fight, Alex,
27:04I mean, just classic movement
27:06for a boxer all over the ring.
27:09Get in, get out.
27:11Get your shot, score, and lead.
27:13You had to feel sorry
27:14for Jesse in that fight.
27:15It was supposed to be a title fight.
27:17He was a big underdog
27:18against a champion,
27:19but because of boxing politics,
27:21the WBA did not sanction him
27:23as a title fight.
27:24And when Jesse beat the champion,
27:26he didn't win a world title.
27:27And then when the champion
27:29was stripped of his title,
27:30he was not,
27:31despite the fact that he'd beaten Salud,
27:32was not put in
27:34to fight for the champion title.
27:36Certainly bad luck
27:37for this kid from Corpus Christophe.
27:40There, you see those punches
27:42on the inside.
27:42Four or five punches
27:43landed in the midsection.
27:44How much credit do you give
27:46for a punch
27:46that has virtually no power on it?
27:48Right.
27:49There's one of those
27:50Tracy Patterson right hands.
27:52Well, there was a good left
27:53by Benavides.
27:53Yeah, turned Tracy around
27:54a little bit.
27:55He's got his legs a little funny.
27:56This is the end of the fifth.
27:57Best punch of the fight
27:59for Jesse Benavides
28:00on the left.
28:01Left hand, watch it.
28:02Boom, right there.
28:03And you saw it turned around
28:05champion Tracy Patterson
28:06a little bit.
28:07Didn't look hurt,
28:08but definitely was off balance.
28:09Jesse needs to land that
28:11times ten.
28:12Yes.
28:13Well, this is Tracy Patterson's
28:14neck of the woods,
28:15living just a mile away.
28:18Thousands of fans here.
28:20The newspapers have just been
28:21filled with story after story.
28:22And so far,
28:24this has been his fight.
28:25He has dictated the pace.
28:27He has landed the vast majority
28:29of the meaningful punches.
28:31And he is dominating
28:32in every way
28:33in his fight against
28:34Corpus Christi's
28:35Jesse Benavides.
28:43Another good flurry
28:44by Patterson.
28:46Oh, and a good digging
28:47left uppercut.
28:48I think in terms of scoring,
28:52there's Tony Ayala Sr.,
28:53the guy who's been working
28:54in the corner of Benavides.
28:56You see the concern there.
28:59Up until one fight ago,
29:01Emmanuel Stewart had been
29:02in Jesse's corner
29:03for his career,
29:04but they separated.
29:06They just didn't feel like
29:07Jesse was getting closer
29:08to a title shot.
29:11There you saw three jabs
29:13that landed on the forehead
29:14of Patterson,
29:16but really had nothing on them.
29:17Dan, the question is,
29:19I mean, I don't want
29:20to be repetitious,
29:21but it may be
29:21that just in total number
29:23of punches
29:23that Jesse Benavides
29:24is landing more punches.
29:26He just counted.
29:27You see there,
29:28he's busier.
29:29Right there.
29:30This is the last one.
29:31This is the left also.
29:32But the question,
29:34oh, good run.
29:35Starring right in,
29:36and it appears
29:37that Benavides
29:37is a little bit
29:39taken back with that punch.
29:40You saw everything stop.
29:42And the scoring
29:42may be academic
29:43if he gets hit
29:44with too many more of those.
29:45That was right
29:46a hairline punch
29:47by Patterson.
29:48And Jesse fights back.
29:50Give him credit.
29:52We need to alert
29:52our stations down the line
29:54that we'll be taking
29:54another station break
29:56at the end of this round
29:57unless something happens
29:58here in the final minute.
29:59Oh, good uppercut.
30:05And Patterson was a little bit
30:06wobbled on the inside.
30:07Oh, and he comes right back.
30:09He comes back
30:10with a strong right hand.
30:12And Patterson gets shocked
30:15and he fights back.
30:16Tracy Patterson was rocked.
30:18I mean, he came back
30:18with a real good punch,
30:19but trust me, Dan,
30:20he was rocked on the inside.
30:22He's backing out
30:22for the first time
30:23in the fight.
30:24It was the right uppercut
30:25that we talked about
30:26that did it.
30:27So Jesse Benavini
30:35is mounting a mini-comeback
30:36here in the sixth round.
30:38But not really jumping on Tracy
30:39like you might expect, Dan.
30:41He's got his man a little bit hurt
30:42and he is not taking over.
30:48Go ahead, Tracy.
30:50All right, Frank, step back.
30:50Well, here comes your station break.
30:52We'll return after a word
30:54from our ABC stations.
30:56And a good finish to the sixth.
30:57Go ahead.
30:59Heavy snow continues through tonight.
31:01Blizzard warning remains in effect.
31:03Jesse Benavides comes out,
31:05meets Tracy Patterson
31:06for the beginning
31:07of the seventh round
31:08here on our Quaker State
31:09professional boxing series.
31:11We're live in Poughkeepsie, New York.
31:13I'm Dan Deardorff,
31:14along with Alex Swallow.
31:16And we saw an exciting sixth round
31:19where both punches,
31:21both fighters rather,
31:22hurt each other
31:22with solid punches.
31:23Big, big punches.
31:24And I gave the round to Jesse
31:26because he definitely had more effect.
31:29And Tracy didn't really recover well, Dan,
31:31I didn't think.
31:32I think it took him a long time
31:33to recover from a punch
31:34from a guy who's not known as a puncher.
31:36A good pair of left hands
31:39to the body by Patterson.
31:41Jab from Benavides scores.
31:47Reminder again that he's a southpaw fighter.
31:50Benavides in the black trunks
31:51with the gold trim.
31:53Patterson wearing the blue with the white.
31:58Good series of punches there
32:00by Jesse Benavides.
32:01Scoring punches,
32:02and they had a little bit of zip to him.
32:03I told you not many folks
32:08from Corpus Christi
32:10came up to this fight,
32:11but she did.
32:12That's Jesse's wife, Rhonda.
32:14And she's got tears streaming down her cheek.
32:18And certainly understandable.
32:20She's watching a gritty performance
32:22by her husband.
32:23And sometimes not watching.
32:25Tracy's wife is home,
32:30pregnant with her third child.
32:31Not watching.
32:32Not watching.
32:33Not having the television on.
32:35Tracy says she just doesn't
32:37watch me fight anymore.
32:41Stop holding, Tracy.
32:42I said, why is that, Tracy?
32:45And he goes,
32:45well, now that the money's gotten so important,
32:47it means too much.
32:50Jesse Benavides continues to be busier.
32:52Continues to pile up points.
32:59Quite frankly,
33:01winning some admiration
33:02for still being this active
33:04in the seventh round
33:05after the rather poor start
33:07that he got off to here today.
33:08And Dan,
33:09it's amazing to me
33:09that in round seven,
33:10Jesse Benavides
33:11could be backing up Tracy Patterson.
33:15I think really that Tracy
33:17is still a little bit bused
33:18from that damage of on six.
33:20There was a good right hand
33:21by Patterson.
33:23The swelling that started
33:25in the first round
33:26underneath Benavides' right eye
33:28is really not too much of a factor.
33:30Good work by his corner
33:32with the end swell
33:33and keeping it down.
33:35Slapping right hand,
33:36some pity-pat punches in there,
33:38but again,
33:38Jesse Benavides scoring,
33:39and that time he did get out, Dan.
33:41Didn't stay around
33:42to get hit by counters
33:43like that one.
33:44That was more reminiscent
33:45of the Benavides of old.
33:46This fight is scheduled
33:53for 12 rounds,
33:55and it's for Patterson's
33:56championship belt.
33:58And right now,
33:59Texan just...
34:00And a big left hand!
34:05Lazy right jab
34:06by Jesse Benavides
34:07and a big left counter
34:09there by Tracy Patterson.
34:10That punch was inside
34:12the last five seconds
34:14of the seventh round.
34:15We move now
34:16into the eighth
34:17and a huge amount
34:19of Vaseline
34:20on the left cheek
34:21of Tracy Patterson.
34:23Trying to protect
34:24the swelling that's there.
34:26I've never...
34:26He's having trouble
34:27seeing out of that eye,
34:28and that's why
34:28those right hands
34:29are getting home.
34:30He's definitely having trouble,
34:31Dan, seeing out of the left eye.
34:33Tracy Patterson on the left.
34:34I've seen a lot of referees, Alex,
34:35that won't allow a fighter
34:36into the ring
34:37with that much Vaseline
34:38on his face.
34:39It was gone
34:40with that first right jab.
34:41But look at it.
34:42I mean, that's a...
34:43On the side, you're saying,
34:44oh, I see, yes.
34:44Yeah.
34:45Absolutely.
34:46A volume of petroleum jelly
34:47on the side
34:48of Tracy Patterson's face.
34:50The referee today
34:51is Arthur Mercanty, Jr.
34:54Oh, and there was
34:55a good punch by Benavides
34:56and then a good combination
34:57by Patterson.
34:58I mean, this is a fight, Dan.
35:00These are two guys
35:01who are really fighting
35:03as well as they possibly can.
35:05Giving and taking,
35:07and they've both taken
35:08a lot of punishment
35:09and fired back
35:09with punishing punches
35:10of their own.
35:11Step back.
35:12Step back when I say break.
35:16The question is, Dan,
35:17is this good Jesse Benavides
35:19or is this Tracy
35:20not at his best?
35:21And the other question is,
35:22how much does the
35:24southpaw stance
35:25bother him, Tracy?
35:26How much is he trying
35:26to figure out
35:27the southpaw stance?
35:29As we said at the top,
35:30he had three left-handed opponents
35:32in his last five bouts.
35:34Well, and a question
35:35I have to pose to you.
35:36Oh, and there's another
35:37combination by Benavides.
35:40Left, right, left.
35:41All landed
35:41to the head of Patterson.
35:43And Patterson now
35:44finally comes back
35:45with a couple.
35:46And that's what surprises me,
35:47that Tracy didn't respond
35:49right away.
35:49His man was in punching range.
35:51He didn't let his hands go.
35:52And that has to be
35:53respect for Benavides' power.
35:57And that means the question is,
35:59just to interrupt you
36:00once more,
36:00and that means the question is,
36:02people have asked questions
36:03about Tracy Patterson's chin.
36:05Jesse's not known
36:06as a puncher.
36:06If he could hurt him
36:07that much,
36:08does he have great resistance
36:10to power punches
36:10or to punches at all?
36:11And my question to you,
36:13Alex,
36:13is even though
36:14this is Patterson's
36:1550th fight,
36:16how many really
36:17tough fights
36:18has he been in?
36:19Does he really have
36:20a wealth of experience
36:21to fall back on
36:22in fighting opponents
36:24the caliber
36:24of a Jesse Benavides?
36:26Well, that has been
36:26the criticism
36:27of people who say
36:28that his father,
36:29out of love
36:30or maybe knowledge
36:31of what Tracy's
36:32abilities were at the time,
36:34avoided
36:34outstanding competition,
36:36in fact,
36:36kept him in only
36:37with ordinary
36:38kind of club fighter
36:40opposition.
36:41There is Floyd Patterson
36:42looking on.
36:44Floyd knows boxing.
36:44He knows his son's
36:45in a fight.
36:46Yeah.
36:47That's a heartwarming story,
36:49though.
36:50Story of Floyd
36:51and Tracy.
36:54Floyd says amazingly,
36:55Dan,
36:55he was prouder,
36:57happier when his son
36:58won the title
36:58than any moment
37:00in his own
37:00professional career.
37:01And that's just
37:02what the camera speaks.
37:03He truly meant it.
37:04We'll be back
37:05at the end of the eight.
37:06There.
37:07That's good.
37:08There you see
37:09the slice
37:10above the left eye
37:11of Tracy Patterson.
37:13And it looks
37:14to be a nasty cut.
37:16But not bleeding
37:17at all, Dan.
37:17Nothing coming out of it.
37:18I mean,
37:18it came back dry.
37:19It's open,
37:19but not...
37:20But you wonder
37:20how many more
37:21direct hits
37:21it's going to take
37:22or can take.
37:23There was a good
37:24right-hand counter
37:25by Patterson.
37:26And Benavides
37:27is a braised
37:29under both eyes.
37:31Puffy around both eyes.
37:33Both men damaged.
37:35Dan,
37:35we used to say
37:36when there were
37:3615-round fights,
37:37you know,
37:37going into...
37:38After round 10,
37:39the five rounds
37:40after that
37:41were the championship
37:41rounds.
37:42Now with 12-round fights,
37:43I guess 9, 10, 11, 12
37:45in the championship rounds.
37:46And this,
37:47on my scorecard at least,
37:48the fight is still up
37:49for grabs.
37:51As is often the case
37:53with fighters
37:53of this size,
37:54again,
37:54a reminder
37:55that these are
37:55122-pounders
37:57in the
37:58super-bantamweight
37:59title category.
38:00and keep in mind
38:02that contrary
38:03to what you see
38:03with the big men
38:04sometimes at this
38:05stage of a fight,
38:06these two are
38:07in remarkable condition
38:08and we can and will
38:09fight with this pace
38:10all the way to the end.
38:12You see Patterson
38:13driving Benavides back.
38:14Tremendous pace
38:17in the fight.
38:19You can see it
38:20in both men.
38:22Movement from Tracy.
38:23I think more movement,
38:24Dan,
38:24than we've seen
38:25at any other time
38:26in the fight.
38:27Good right...
38:27Oh, a body by Jesse.
38:29Good three punches
38:30in a row
38:31by Benavides.
38:32And that'll take
38:32the bounce
38:33out of those legs.
38:37Tracy Patterson,
38:38the champion on the left,
38:39not letting his hands
38:40go enough.
38:41He's either
38:41too respectful
38:43of the power
38:43and trying to be
38:44too defensive-minded
38:45or he doesn't have
38:46the stamina to do it
38:47or he's, you know,
38:50just has never
38:50recovered fully
38:51for that punch
38:51in the sixth round.
38:52I find that hard
38:53to believe.
38:55Even though there are,
38:56I would estimate,
38:58a couple thousand people
38:59here in attendance
38:59at the McCann Center
39:01here on the campus
39:01of Marist College
39:02all behind Tracy Patterson.
39:04Who's holding on.
39:06As you can tell
39:07by the crowd noise
39:08in the background,
39:09they are wondering
39:11when it's going to happen,
39:12when he's really
39:12going to let it go,
39:13as Alex said.
39:18Jesse Benavides
39:19told us yesterday,
39:20I think it's going
39:20to come down
39:21to who is in better
39:22condition
39:22and who has
39:23the bigger will
39:24to win.
39:26He was right.
39:30And as we move
39:31into the latter stages
39:33of the fight,
39:34that's where it comes
39:35to the surface.
39:36I really expected
39:36Tracy to,
39:37there with right hands
39:38like that,
39:39but with right hands
39:40with something
39:41behind them
39:42and combination
39:43punching,
39:43he just has not
39:44thrown combinations
39:45the way he normally
39:46does.
39:46And it may be
39:47because he's in
39:48with an opponent
39:48and he's firing back.
39:52There's Patterson
39:53holding Benavides
39:54who throws about 10
39:55and then a pair
39:56left hook
39:57by Tracy Patterson.
39:59Heads clash.
40:00Bad clash of heads.
40:02Benavides lands
40:03about 10 soft ones,
40:05Patterson two hard ones.
40:06Tough to score.
40:10Well, there is
40:12the face of a man
40:13who fights for a living,
40:14Jesse Benavides.
40:15He meets
40:16Tracy Patterson.
40:18Three rounds to go.
40:20Dan, on my scorecard,
40:22Jesse won the last round
40:23and with that one
40:24moved in front
40:25by a point in the bout.
40:30Unofficially, of course,
40:31and as you pointed out,
40:34it's a tough fight
40:35to score.
40:38As I said to Alex,
40:39between commercials,
40:40I'm glad that I'm not
40:42having to score.
40:42Look at the pain
40:50and agony
40:50felt by a father
40:52who's training
40:53and managing his son.
40:55Those are two hats
40:56that I don't know
40:56how they would fit
40:57on anybody's head.
40:58Somehow,
40:59Floyd Patterson
40:59is able to do it.
41:01The crowd getting into it.
41:02Dan, it's interesting.
41:04In the Stevie Cruz fight
41:06which Tracy lost,
41:08Floyd was so upset
41:09by watching his son
41:10get knocked down,
41:10he almost threw
41:11the towel in.
41:13And Mickey Allen
41:14is broken along the corner
41:15and kept him from doing it.
41:16And Tracy came back
41:17and won the next round.
41:18Lost the fight
41:18but came back well
41:20and learned something
41:21by coming back.
41:21So Floyd is not
41:22the best judge
41:23of when to stop a fight.
41:25And Floyd said
41:26he learned something.
41:27I'll never work a corner
41:28without my brother-in-law there
41:29because I know
41:30he's got more common sense
41:31about it than I do.
41:33Not a lot of movement.
41:35These two are just
41:36standing and slugging.
41:38It's not slugging
41:39by Jesse Benefitis
41:40on the left.
41:40It really is pity, Pat.
41:43Both those punches missed.
41:45Jesse was well covered.
41:48But they are landing.
41:50But yet,
41:50we keep talking
41:51about the power
41:52of Patterson's punches
41:53but yet,
41:54here's Benefitis
41:55still standing there
41:56in the third round
41:57coming at him.
41:58Busier.
41:59Just getting off first.
42:01Throwing more punches.
42:03Missing a lot
42:03but landing more
42:04than Tracy Patterson.
42:05Watch that face.
42:07All right, left hand up!
42:08Break!
42:09Let's keep it clean now, fellas.
42:11A minute left
42:12in round number 10.
42:15Break!
42:15Boy, Benefitis better
42:17break that habit, Alex,
42:18of just lunging in there
42:19with that hit
42:20out in front.
42:21You're right, Dan.
42:22It's dangerous
42:23with a right-handed
42:23power puncher
42:24but you can see
42:25the frustration
42:26of Tracy Patterson
42:27as he did it.
42:28Ooh, there.
42:30Tracy tried to rally
42:31and Jesse came back.
42:32A hurt left there
42:32by Tracy Patterson
42:33on the right
42:34but Jesse did it!
42:35This is quality stuff, folks.
42:38I mean,
42:38this is quality boxing.
42:41Break!
42:42Two guys with skill,
42:45two guys with heart,
42:46two guys with stamina.
42:48And for a fight
42:49with this pace, Dan,
42:51very few clinches.
42:53Like, really.
42:53They've thrown a lot
42:54and they've been hit a lot.
43:00Again, you see the head
43:02of Benefitis
43:03taking a licking
43:04from Tracy Patterson.
43:05And who?
43:08We got a pair to go
43:10and the crowd loves it.
43:12Come on, Teddy!
43:13The crowd went crazy
43:15at the end of the 10th.
43:16They enjoyed what
43:18they are seeing here
43:19in the beginning
43:20of round number 11.
43:21And you saw a little
43:22wishful thinking there
43:23by both men.
43:24They touched gloves
43:24at the start of the 11th.
43:26You're supposed to do that
43:26at the start
43:27of the final round.
43:30I hope they don't know
43:31something we don't.
43:35You can see that
43:36they have put a butterfly
43:37there on the left eye
43:40of Tracy Patterson.
43:42Jesse Benefitis
43:47was hurt
43:47at the end
43:48of round 10.
43:50And Tracy Patterson
43:52knew it
43:52and he's been more
43:53aggressive here
43:53at round 11.
44:00Well, remember
44:01when we showed you
44:01Floyd Patterson
44:02in the agony
44:03of a father?
44:04Well, there's the agony
44:06of a wife.
44:08Rhonda Benefitis
44:08having to sit there
44:09and watch her husband
44:10turn in a courageous
44:13performance
44:13as is Tracy Patterson.
44:16It has been a while
44:18since I've been
44:19at ringside, Alex,
44:20and enjoyed a fight
44:20as much as I'm
44:22enjoying this one.
44:23Not only are both men
44:24trying their best
44:25and throwing punches
44:26but these happen
44:28to be two quality kids.
44:29A quality fight
44:30but out of the ring
44:31these are two
44:31very nice people.
44:33Soft spoken,
44:34not full of themselves,
44:35no needless hype
44:36before the fight.
44:38Look at the puffiness
44:39in Tracy's face.
44:41Tracy said,
44:42Jesse,
44:43I respect him.
44:44Good luck.
44:44I respect Jesse Benavides.
44:46He's one of the best
44:47but I am the best
44:48and I've got to prove
44:48myself against the best.
44:50So far,
44:51he has not dominated this
44:53as he expected
44:53and as I expected.
44:55And now Benavides
44:56backs up Patterson a bit.
44:59Jesse,
45:00Jesse just keeps
45:01those arms swinging
45:02whether they're
45:03throwing big punches
45:05or small ones,
45:06it doesn't seem to matter.
45:07they just keep coming.
45:11Look at Tracy.
45:11I mean,
45:12for Tracy Patterson
45:13is the boxer here
45:14and in some ways
45:15That's a slip.
45:16I think
45:16Arthur McKinney's
45:18ruling that a slip
45:19cleans the gloves
45:20and sends him back to work.
45:21And in some ways,
45:22Jesse Benavides
45:23is stalking Tracy Patterson.
45:25That is a total role reversal
45:26and I'm surprised.
45:28That doesn't mean
45:28that Tracy doesn't
45:29still have the power
45:30to do serious damage.
45:34No,
45:34but I think
45:34you and I agreed
45:35in our pre-fight analysis
45:36that it would be Patterson
45:38who would swarm Benavides
45:40and make it difficult
45:41for Jesse
45:41to do what he does best,
45:43which is move.
45:44Instead,
45:45we haven't seen that
45:46by either one.
45:47We haven't seen the movement
45:48or the swarm.
45:53Tracy's general style
45:54is pressure
45:55with both hands
45:56coming forward
45:57in combinations.
45:58He's coming forward
45:59at times like he is now
46:00but he's just not
46:01letting his hands go
46:02and he's missing
46:03as he did
46:04with both punches there.
46:05You saw him slip again.
46:06You can see the water
46:07in the corner
46:07on the canvas.
46:12Even the ring
46:13taking a beating
46:14here in McKinsey.
46:21Well,
46:21here we go.
46:23The start of the 12th
46:24and final round
46:25for Tracy Patterson's
46:27WBC
46:28Super Bantamweight title.
46:32Jesse Benavides on the left,
46:33Tracy Patterson on your right.
46:36And I'm not sure of this,
46:37but I would have to think
46:38that the fight could be
46:39on the line here
46:40in the final round.
46:41And I would have to think
46:42that both men
46:43have to approach it that way.
46:44They have to go out
46:45and win this round.
46:47Oh, there's Patterson
46:49just pushing down
46:50on the back of the head
46:51of Benavides
46:51and driving it down.
46:52And Tracy Patterson
46:54being a little more assertive
46:56as far as
46:56shoving and pushing.
46:59Last round, fellas.
47:01Let's go last.
47:01Come on.
47:02Arthur Buchanan.
47:04You know,
47:04promoter's dream.
47:05Last round, fellas.
47:06Let's go.
47:08Freak!
47:10Freak!
47:10He's trying to get
47:13the best possible action fight.
47:14I don't think
47:14these two guys
47:15need any reminders.
47:16No.
47:18And we didn't know
47:19how prophetic Benavides
47:20was going to be yesterday
47:21when he said
47:22it was all going to come down
47:23to who has the biggest heart
47:25and who wants it the most.
47:27And Tracy Patterson
47:28forces a clinch there.
47:30That means that
47:31he needed to tie it off.
47:32And Jesse Benavides
47:33is not letting him rest.
47:36Well, this fight
47:37is being fought
47:38with the same intensity
47:39here inside
47:40as the winner
47:41is throwing
47:41Yes, you can see
47:44the blood coming
47:44from over the left eye
47:45of Benavides.
47:46Right hand,
47:47I believe it was a punch
47:48and not a clash of heads.
47:50I think the right hand
47:51by Tracy Patterson
47:52opened it up.
47:53But there's only
47:54a minute and a half,
47:55half a round left.
47:56Oh, a good uppercut
47:57by Patterson
47:57and back comes Benavides
47:59with a combination.
48:02Dan,
48:03now you have to wonder
48:04how much the home
48:05court advantage
48:07is going to help
48:08Tracy Patterson
48:09whether the judges
48:10have been influenced
48:11by this crowd.
48:12Let's repeat again.
48:14Two New York judges
48:16and one judge
48:17from Puerto Rico.
48:23The judge from Puerto Rico
48:24is very inexperienced,
48:25has not done many
48:26world title fights.
48:29Steve Weisfeld,
48:31Francisco Manzanoa,
48:32and Barbara Perez,
48:34if this goes another 45,
48:37will be tournament
48:37the winner.
48:38And look at these two go.
48:40this has been,
48:54from start to finish,
48:57a quality display of boxing
49:00by two professional fighters,
49:02Benavides and Patterson.
49:05The crowd appreciates it,
49:07and Alex,
49:08this has been quality stuff.
49:13Dan,
49:14it's only March,
49:15but this is an early candidate
49:16for fight of the year.
49:19There's the bell.
49:23The decision,
49:25the all-important decision,
49:27when we return here live
49:28to Poughkeepsie, New York.
49:30Stay with us.
49:31We are back here
49:36in Poughkeepsie, New York.
49:37We're awaiting the decision.
49:40We're still collecting
49:41the information
49:42from the judges
49:43and getting it up
49:44to our ring announcer.
49:45And this one,
49:47sometimes you have an idea
49:48going into a fight,
49:49and I'm clueless right now.
49:51This could go either way.
49:53Floyd Patterson
49:54hugging his son.
49:57Let's take a look
49:58at some of the closing action
50:00from the 12th round.
50:01And this was just
50:04a tremendous fight.
50:06There was a good right
50:07over the top
50:08by Tracy Patterson,
50:09and as has been,
50:11and what was his trademark
50:12the entire fight,
50:13Benavides kept fighting back.
50:19We're still awaiting
50:21the decision.
50:24Both these fighters
50:25paid a stiff price today
50:27for the war they fought.
50:29Both cut,
50:30both marked,
50:31both of them swelling
50:32around both of their eyes.
50:39And again,
50:40this is why both of those guys
50:41look the way they do.
50:43Good inside work
50:44by Patterson,
50:45and again,
50:45a comeback by Benavides,
50:47who lands a combination
50:50in return.
50:51Tracy, go.
50:51We're ready to go.
50:53And they are a little
50:55tardy here in Poughkeepsie
50:56with their decision.
50:59Let's go upstairs
51:00to the ring,
51:01and here's our decision.
51:02It's a unanimous decision.
51:06Judge Steve Weissfeld
51:08scores the fight
51:09115-113.
51:11Barbara Perez
51:12also saw it
51:13115-113.
51:15And Judge
51:16Francisco Manzano
51:17scored it
51:18117-113.
51:20Winner and
51:21still!
51:22Tracy Patterson
51:26is the winner.
