Diego Corrales defends his IBF Jr Lightweight Title against Derrick "Smoke" Gainer on HBO Boxing After Dark
Transcript
00:00You
01:30Two of the best fighters in the business in Mayweather and Corrales.
01:33And they'll be up against top flight opponents with titles on the line and Boxing After Dark danger everywhere.
01:39Look out.
01:40You never know what will bust out on this, the action-packed series that changed the landscape of boxing.
01:47Hello again, everybody.
01:48I'm Jim Lampley.
01:49We welcome you to this special edition of HBO's Boxing After Dark.
01:53Special because, as you'll see in a minute, we get a chance to work with a brand-new expert commentator who's never worked with us before and should have plenty to say.
02:00Special because we get a chance to check in on the continuing rise of one of the real coming superstars of the sport, Floyd Mayweather Jr., who's come so far so fast since the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996,
02:13that boxing authorities now rank him as one of the 3, 4, 5 best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.
02:18And special also because a new force has emerged in the same weight class as Mayweather within the past six months, Diego Corrales.
02:25And we'll see him tonight as he auditions for a potential shot at Mayweather somewhere down the road.
02:32Roy Jones Jr. is very closely allied with the young man you'll see fighting against Diego Corrales in the first fight, Derek Gaynor.
02:39So because of that conflict of interest, Roy isn't with us tonight, and that gives us a great chance to work with the legendary trainer and manager.
02:47You saw him training Prince Nassim Ahmed to a four-round knockout victory over Yanni Bungu last week, Emmanuel Stewart.
02:53Emmanuel, welcome to the show. Great pleasure to have you.
02:56Floyd Mayweather Jr., you've known him and his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., for a long time.
03:02They come from southern Michigan, as you do.
03:04Until recently, Floyd Sr. was both the manager and the trainer for his son.
03:08Now Floyd Jr. has kicked his dad out of his business life in favor of rap impresario James Prince.
03:14And there's a growing, extremely angry rift between the two.
03:19Having known them the way you've known them, how badly do you think this rift is going to affect Floyd the fighter and when?
03:25I think the rift is definitely going to affect him because not only have they had a relationship of father-son, boxer-trainer,
03:32but it's a relationship that's been extremely close from the day that Mayweather was born.
03:36I think his father started training him when he was like two years old, and his father's entire life has been spent around making him become a world champion.
03:44And the rift is going to become bigger before it becomes better, and it definitely will have an effect on it.
03:49So we'll see later on tonight if it's going to affect Mayweather already as he gets ready to go against solid veteran Goyo Vargas.
03:56But before we see that, and in company with HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant,
04:01we're going to take a look at the new force in the 130-pound weight class, Diego Corrales.
04:04He was virtually unknown to the nation six months ago.
04:08Now, two fights later, people are talking with enthusiasm about the possibility of a Corrales-Mayweather matchup.
04:14Is this guy for real, Larry?
04:16He is for real, and he may be even better than for real, Jim.
04:20Corrales is built like an exclamation point made of some very tough steel, but there are question marks hovering over him.
04:31How, for example, did this fighter emerge from virtually no place to beat a solid, well-regarded, undefeated title holder, Roberto Garcia,
04:42and look like a Hearns or an Agueo in doing so?
04:47And then six weeks later in his first defense, almost blowing the whole thing by almost missing the deadline to make weight just by a few minutes.
04:57That is why he opened as only about a 7-to-5 favorite over Derek Gaynor.
05:03The oddsmakers seem to be saying, let's see him do it again, especially against a guy who is so difficult to look good against.
05:12And here are two of the tallest 130-pound fighters in the weight class as Corrales gets ready to go against Gaynor.
05:21They're already in the ring, and here's a closer look at a holder of one of the 130-pound championship belts and a rising force in the sport, Diego Corrales.
05:31Corrales went to high school in Sacramento where he graduated in the culinary arts.
05:36His favorite dish, chicken parmigiana, but he is not chicken.
05:41He insists that he does want to fight Mayweather later this year.
05:45But when he has to move up to the lightweight division, he will not fight Johnston,
05:51the very well-regarded lightweight champion, because they are old friends.
05:55Derek Gaynor expected to get his first title shot last year against Roberto Garcia.
05:59Garcia came all the way to Biloxi, Mississippi, before backing out of the fight,
06:04rather than to face Gaynor with his title on the line and three Southern judges and a Southern referee in control of the bouton.
06:11So he had to wait even longer for finally this title shot, Larry.
06:16Let's take a closer look, then, at Smoke Gaynor.
06:18Since losing to Kevin Kelly and then John John Molina almost four years ago, he's had 16 straight victories.
06:26But this, in his 10th year as a professional, is his first championship fight.
06:31And he has it basically because of his friendship with Roy Jones,
06:35who has supported him financially and otherwise to get him to this position.
06:40So Roy is in the house, as he always is when Derek Gaynor fights,
06:44and hoping to score a victory as a manager tonight.
06:47And while you're watching the fight, we invite you to log on to HBO.com slash boxing,
06:52where you'll be able to score each round and spend some time chatting with lightweight champions Paul Spadafora.
06:58Hey, see those Morales-Barrera highlights if you didn't catch the fight.
07:01That was a time capsule battle that took place here last month in Las Vegas.
07:06Tale of the tape now between Diego Corrales and Derek Gaynor.
07:10Corrales is an anomaly at six feet in the 130-pound weight class.
07:14Gaynor's a tall junior, lightweight at five feet nine.
07:18They both weighed in at 130.
07:20They arrive in the ring tonight at 141 pounds.
07:23Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
07:27The Diego-Chico Corrales-Derek Smoke Gaynor fight is scheduled for 12 rounds,
07:32using the unified rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
07:35There is no standing-eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
07:39Only the referee can stop the fight, and you cannot be saved by the bell in any round,
07:43including the 12th and final round.
07:46Jim.
07:46Thank you, Harold.
07:47Let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official introductions.
07:50Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to the MGM Grand here in Las Vegas, Nevada,

08:31The three judges scoring this contest on a ten-point must system from ringside will be
08:36Mike Gliena, Bill Graham, and Jerry Roth,
08:41and when the bell rings your referee in charge of the action, Jay Nadee.
08:45And now, ladies and gentlemen, 12 rounds of boxing for the unified IBA and IBF Junior Lightweight Championship of the World.
09:00Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing platinum trimmed with black and weighing in at 130 pounds.
09:08His professional record, an excellent 33 victories, including 21 knockouts, with four defeats.
09:16From Pensacola, Florida, ladies and gentlemen, here is the number one right challenger in the world,
09:24Derrick Smoke Gainer!
09:30And his opponent across the ring, fighting out of the red corner, wearing camouflage and weighing in also at 130 pounds.
09:42He has a perfect professional record consisting of 30 bouts, 30 victories with 24 knockouts.
09:48From Sacramento, California, presenting the reigning and defending, undefeated IBF,
09:56IBA Junior Lightweight Champion of the World, Diego Chico Corrales!
10:06I gave you instructions in the dressing room. Are there any questions?
10:18I want a good, clean fight. Please obey my commands.
10:21When I say break, step back. Defend yourself at all times. Touch gloves now. Let's go to work.
10:25We've seen Corrales look wonderful against fighters who stand in front of him or come at him.
10:34Now he will be tested by a fighter who has great movement when he wants to.
10:40This will be yet another test.
10:42One of Corrales' primary sparring partners to prepare him for the fight, Kevin Kelly.
10:49Man who fought Derrick Gainer twice, winning the first by knockout, losing the second by decision.
10:57Of course, Corrales wanted to train with Kelly because Kelly, like Gainer, is a southpaw.
11:02But Gainer by far the range here of the two southpaws.
11:05And he starts out trying to approach Corrales with a left-hand lead.
11:12Corrales is trying to move in and get a look early in round one.
11:18Don't grab him.
11:21There's a hard left counter inside by Corrales.
11:25He has quick reflexes and good eyes.
11:28Emanuel, Derrick Gainer is a fighter who in the past has averaged about 45 punches a round by CompuVox numbers.
11:43And the belief on the people, on the part of the people in his corner is that he'll have to be more aggressive tonight against Corrales.
11:49He definitely is going to have to be more aggressive because Corrales is putting the pressure on him right away.
11:53And it's really strange to see two guys this tall, nearly six feet tall, fighting at 130 pounds.
11:59So who's going to be the aggressor is the problem.
12:01But I believe that heads and makers have been a very good fight.
12:05There, Gainer shows you his desire to be aggressive and to begin the exchanges against Corrales.
12:11As coming out of the break, Gainer whacked Corrales three straight times before Corrales seemed to be ready to fight again.
12:17Corrales is putting a lot of pressure on him.
12:20And he's putting most of the punches.
12:22It may look effective, but he's catching most of them.
12:26And going down a stretch, it's going to be how strong is Gainer going to be mentally as his pressure is continually applied.
12:33Corrales says that he injured his right hand in the third round of his last fight against John Brown.
12:38It has not been a particularly long layoff since that time.
12:42He went through extensive therapy to try to get the knuckles on the right hand feeling good again.
12:46And hasn't shown any reluctance to throw it in the first round here.
12:49Well, he's going to have to throw it because I think Gainer is really emotionally fired up for this fight because more than anything else, he wants to prove something and to satisfy Roy Jones.
12:59I don't think Roy Jones has ever put so much interest in any other box other than himself.
13:03Don't grab his head anymore.
13:05Diego Corrales has fought eight southpaws in his career and knocked seven of them out.
13:11Some right-handed fighters, of course, have trouble getting going against the southpaw.
13:14And there's Gainer landing a left-hand lead and another left-hand lead as Corrales tries to move in closer.
13:20He's landed about a half a dozen of those in this fight, and he's giving Corrales different looks that are confusing him a little at the moment.
13:33Well, he's going to have to do it a long time.
13:35Corrales has put a lot of pressure on him.
13:36What has probably made Corrales effective with southpaws in the past is he throws right-hand leads very effectively.
13:43That's one of his best punches, and that is going to be very effective, particularly fighting with a southpaw.
13:48And he fights out of an open stance, so he's ready to punch with either hand.
13:51Yes, right.
13:51He's always in great position, much like a Felix Trinidad type of foul.
13:54Always in perfect position.
13:56One thing when you're doing, you fucking fade, you're going to fade a little bit, and go to the body a little bit more.
14:15Okay?
14:16Fade, and go to the body.
14:17Okay?
14:19It's okay, it's okay, it's okay.
14:21When you spin out, when you throw your hook, sit down.
14:24He's got to turn to you.
14:24Shoot your left hand on it.
14:26Okay?
14:26That's a good round.
14:28That's a good round.
14:29Use a lot of faints.
14:30A lot of faints.
14:31If you move to your left, and you come back to your right, drop that good straight left hand off.
14:36Then spin out with your hook, okay?
14:37You're good to go?
14:38Give him a run.
14:39Keep it like that on the head.
14:42You're good to go, okay?
14:44Are those left hands getting through?
14:46Seconds out.
14:47Seconds out.
14:48He looks so from two or three sides of the ring, but from that camera angle,
14:53blocked by Corrales, who has been told to start going to the body more.
15:00Emmanuel, the correct advice?
15:02I think it's good advice, but what he's doing right now is risky,
15:05because if it goes in this pattern all the way through, he could lose a decision.
15:09But from what I can see, I know that Gaynor's going to have problems holding him off
15:13with the way it's going, because he's not landing that effective on Corrales.
15:17It looks good to the crowd, because Gaynor's a very flashy puncher, much on the Roy Jones type.
15:23But he's not being that effective at this point in time.
15:26And Corrales has put a tremendous amount of pressure on him,
15:29and I'm quite sure it's going to be more intensified as the fight goes on.
15:33But Corrales in the first round put pressure on without throwing many punches.
15:36Now he catches Gaynor and gets ready to open up a little bit.
15:40In the first round by CompuBox Numbers, Gaynor threw 52 punches to only 16 for Corrales.
15:45So Corrales was saving his energy in round one and getting a look at what Gaynor would do.
15:50Now he begins to cut off the ring with a little bit more of a purpose.
15:55And also, if you notice, the first right-hand lead that he shot off the back,
15:58which is one of his favorite punches,
16:00and I think as the fight progresses and he gets closer and closer,
16:03it's going to be a more effective punch in this fight.
16:14Okay, don't hold. Don't hold. Box.
16:30Don't hold.
16:31You suspect Corrales will be willing to take some risks against Gaynor.
16:35He stated to us yesterday that Kevin Kelly told him Gaynor, quote, couldn't punch a lick.
16:41Well, I don't think Gaynor's a devastating puncher, but he punches good enough to get his attention.
16:45I think he's a much better puncher than he was four or five years ago.
16:48He's a much better puncher than he was when he fought Kevin Kelly.
16:50He commits more to his punches now.
16:52That's true.
16:53And it's funny.
16:53I thought the greatest fight I ever saw him fighting was the fight that he lost with Kevin Kelly.
16:57When he lost basically for about one punch, but he fought a great fight up until that point.
17:02If you don't hear much noise from the crowd, it's because there isn't much crowd,
17:06and there isn't much going on in the ring to inspire the crowd we have.
17:12What's the significance of the relatively small crowd here, Larry?
17:16Well, I suppose somebody might say that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has not yet gotten to the point
17:22where people have to feel they have to see him yet.
17:26Gaynor lands two left hands there.
17:29The first one flush on the jaw.
17:30That was a great left hand.
17:32In fact, the normal fight he would have knocked out.
17:34He stunned him at that point, but I'm surprised that Corrales is coming back.
17:39And now Corrales comes back and begins delivering combinations
17:42as he corners Gaynor against the ropes.
17:44Already, Corrales makes clear that he isn't going to want to give Gaynor much room to box.
17:49So Gaynor's going to have to gain that room with his feet.
17:52And if Corrales can cut off the ring, he's going to force Gaynor to fight his fight.
17:56Perfect.
18:04Here we see our partner, Roy Jones, sitting quietly behind the corner.
18:21And aware of the monitor to his left, able to see that he's on camera.
18:26R.J., who involves himself in so many different businesses.
18:32Come on, come on, come on, come on while you're coming out, okay?
18:34Take a little rinse.
18:36All right, deep breath.
18:37Dig in the inside, my baby.
18:39Bring you in there big.
18:40Big in there, okay?
18:40Big inside to side.
18:42You looking good.
18:43We all right.
18:47There's a good straight left.
18:49Perfect left.
18:50Momentarily stunned Corrales gathers himself
18:54and goes on to probably win that round.
18:58But despite that, round two changed the momentum of the fight
19:01as Corrales threw 48 punches
19:03after having only thrown 16 in the first round.
19:06And by doing so, he limited Gaynor to only 26 output punches.
19:10Half as many as Gaynor threw in round one.
19:12So Corrales shows that when he wants to be aggressive,
19:15he'll make it difficult for Gaynor to get off.
19:17I'd also like to point out,
19:19even though Corrales is the taller of the two,
19:21if you notice, he keeps his hands very close,
19:24unlike most tall guys, very close,
19:26which means he's going to be more effective in closer range,
19:29even though he's taller,
19:30because he fights with his hands in a position
19:32where he can punch very effective
19:33by just twisting his body with punches.
19:36And he's going to be more effective
19:37going down a stretch than a shorter fighter,
19:39fighting at this distance right here.
19:41Right now they're fighting in a phone booth.
19:44And you can see that Corrales has a comfort level with this.
19:47Can Gaynor be as comfortable?
19:50That's a big question.
19:51Work.
20:03Gaynor missing twice upstairs.
20:05Corrales punching to the body.
20:07Corrales are more effective.
20:08Oh, there it is.
20:10I was just going to say,
20:11Corrales is still more effective,
20:12you can see in that position,
20:13and much more comfortable with short punches.
20:16A beautiful picture perfect short left hook.
20:19Yeah, and it was a punch that was effective
20:21because he never sought the punch.
20:23Corrales is much more effective at this distance.
20:26Even though he's taller,
20:27the shorter punches are going to be something
20:29that's going to be very difficult for Gaynor to see.
20:31Text looks up as Corrales squares up
20:34with his opponent along the ropes.
20:35He squared his shoulders up,
20:37fired punches with both hands,
20:39didn't give Gaynor a chance to move.
20:41There's no three-knockdown rule in this fight
20:44that Corrales stopped it.
20:48Why has he stopped it?
20:50No, no, no.
20:51It looked to me as though Gaynor
20:53was up on his feet and coherence.
20:56I definitely feel that
20:58he should have given him an opportunity.
20:59I think it was a quick stoppage.
21:01I don't get it.
21:01I definitely feel that
21:02it should have given him an opportunity.
21:04But that is the decision of the referee.
21:07Maybe he saw something that I would say.
21:08So, Gaynor stops the fight, yep.
21:09Maybe he saw something in Gaynor's eyes.
21:12There is a safety-first mentality in Las Vegas,
21:15which is applauded by most in the sport.
21:19And maybe decides that,
21:22for whatever reason,
21:23Gaynor shouldn't continue
21:24against a Diego Corrales,
21:26who was making his imprint felt.
21:27Well, as you said,
21:29the pressure ultimately got Gaynor
21:33into this shoulder-to-shoulder,
21:35toe-to-toe exchange, Emmanuel.
21:37And that's not his fight.
21:39No, Gaynor's still from the school
21:41where he has a stylish type of fight
21:43and he has to have room.
21:44And the Ringo,
21:45Diego Corrales is much more comfortable
21:47at a shorter range,
21:48even though he's taller.
21:49And how about the mustard Corrales
21:52got on the left hook
21:53in that short space, huh?
21:54It was great.
21:55And the punches that hurt you
21:56are the punches that you don't see.
21:58And that was the perfect example.
21:59It was a short left hook
22:00over Gaynor's shoulder
22:02that he never even saw.
22:03And it didn't have to be that hard.
22:05I felt that if the referee
22:06had permitted the fight
22:07to continue,
22:08the outcome would have been the same.
22:10Somewhere along the line.
22:11Somewhere along the way.
22:11I don't think he would have made it
22:12much more than another round.
22:13So you see the two-fisted talent
22:17of Diego Corrales
22:19who took the first round
22:20to get a look at Derek Gaynor
22:22and try to figure what Gaynor
22:22was going to do.
22:23Took the second round
22:25to basically force Gaynor
22:27into fighting his fight
22:29and then in the third round
22:31destroyed him.
22:32It was a systematic destruction job.
22:35Beautiful piece of work
22:36by Diego Corrales.
22:39He makes his statement.
22:41And now we'll sit back
22:43to see what Floyd Mayweather can do.
22:46First knockdown, Emmanuel.
22:47And here's the left hook coming up.
22:49It's the punch you don't see there.
22:50He never saw the punch.
22:51Particularly when you're a southpaw.
22:53The punch that you're most effective
22:54to get with is the left hook
22:55because all southpaws
22:57are watching for a straight right hand
22:58all the time.
23:00But the main thing is
23:00he was just too close on them.
23:01He couldn't fight effectively that close.
23:07And if you notice,
23:08Corrales is very effective
23:10at this short distance
23:10even with his long arms.
23:13An aggressive Corrales
23:16knew he was in a finishing situation.
23:19Squared his feet and his shoulders
23:20so that he could fire at Gaynor
23:22with both hands.
23:23Now let's listen
23:24to the conversation
23:25between Gaynor and Jay Nady.
23:26three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
23:36You okay?
23:38No, no, fight's over.
23:39No, no, I'm sorry.
23:42Well, I tend to agree with you, Emmanuel,
23:45that the result was going to be the same
23:47but I don't get this type.
23:48Yeah, I definitely think
23:49and I hear them say that he was okay
23:50and his eyes seemingly had cleared.
23:52Let's go to Michael Buffer
23:53for the official particulars.
23:56Following the second knockdown,
23:58referee Jay Nady
23:59calls a halt to the belt.
24:01The official time,
24:02one minute,
24:0350 seconds of round number three.
24:06The winner and still,
24:07the undefeated
24:08IBF,
24:09IBA Junior,
24:11lightweight champion of the world,
24:12Diego Chico Corrales.
24:35Final punched at numbers
24:37and you'll see that
24:39in part of three rounds,
24:42not three complete rounds.
24:43They both threw about
24:44the same number of punches
24:45and landed at a similar rate
24:48though, of course,
24:48Corrales' were the more damaging blows
24:51although Gaynor did land
24:52some quality power shots
24:54in the first and second rounds.
24:56You can see Gaynor landing
24:5627 out of 67 power shots.
24:59That's not an unhappy statistic
25:01but Corrales,
25:0232 out of 95,
25:03virtually all of Corrales'
25:05landed punches
25:05were power shots
25:07and once he got the left hook
25:08going at close range,
25:09that was the deciding factor
25:11in the fight.
25:12Larry Merchant standing by
25:13with the champion.
25:21Thank you very much.
25:25Thank you very much, Jim.
25:26I'm sorry we got our signals
25:27crossed in here.
25:29Congratulations, Chico.
25:31Were you surprised
25:32after he seemed to do so well
25:34in the first round
25:35and a little bit of the second round
25:36that suddenly he stopped
25:38and went shoulder to shoulder
25:39and toe to toe with you?
25:42No, I knew in my time
25:43he was going to start out.
25:44I didn't expect him to start out
25:44this fast
25:45but I knew he was going to have
25:46to stand there and fight.
25:47As long as I kept the pressure on,
25:49kept throwing punches
25:49but never got chances
25:50and whenever he tied me up,
25:51I'm the bigger, stronger,
25:51more physical person in there
25:53so it wears you down a little faster
25:54but I didn't think
25:55it would wear him out this fast
25:56but I knew he was going to
25:56sit down eventually.
25:57He hit you with a pretty good
25:59left hand in the second round
26:00and it seemed to stun you momentarily.
26:03How big of a punch was it?
26:05It wasn't anything.
26:05It just hit me,
26:06knocked me off balance
26:06and I came right back
26:07and I never felt anything from it.
26:10What is the secret
26:11of how well you fight
26:13as a very tall man
26:14on the inside?
26:16The secret of my dad,
26:17he always told me
26:18that a complete fighter
26:19is how to fight inside
26:20as well as outside
26:21regardless of if you're taller
26:22or not
26:23and he worked with me
26:24a lot with that
26:25and working on the side
26:26because eventually
26:26there's going to come a time
26:27where I can't box everybody.
26:28I may have to come out
26:29and fight
26:29and I have to know
26:30how to do it well.
26:31You fought two fighters
26:33before this
26:34who were right in front of you
26:35all the time
26:36and you could have a chance
26:39to stand there
26:40and figure them out.
26:40What was the different part
26:42of having to fight
26:43a southpaw
26:44who had some movement
26:46tonight?
26:47I had to go to him.
26:48I got to show
26:48a different part of Diego again.
26:50It's a whole new thing.
26:51I can show I can come forward.
26:52I can keep the pressure on.
26:54I can land the good shots inside
26:55and I know how to stay inside there
26:57and not give up
26:59and get frustrated.
27:00There's been talk
27:02of a big fight
27:03between you
27:04and Mayweather
27:06later this year.
27:08Do you feel
27:09the timing is right
27:10for such a fight?
27:11Absolutely.
27:12I think we're both
27:13right now
27:13we're very strong.
27:15We're proving
27:15that we're very strong
27:16and I think
27:17it's a good thing
27:18to happen.
27:18Let me ask Bob Arum
27:20who promotes
27:21both of you.
27:22Bob is it realistic
27:23that that fight
27:25will come off
27:25this year?
27:27Well I would hope so
27:28but Larry
27:29Floyd got business
27:31to take care of tonight
27:32and we'll have to see
27:32how he does tonight.
27:34But yeah
27:34down the road
27:34if Floyd is successful
27:35that's the fight
27:36I want to make.
27:37That's the fight
27:38which will determine
27:39who's the best
27:40130 pounder in the world.
27:42Thank you very much
27:43gentlemen.
27:44Jim?
27:45All right
27:45thank you very much
27:46Larry.
27:46Emanuel Stewart
27:47he's terrific now
27:49at 130
27:50and obviously
27:51there's a lot of
27:51business to be done
27:52at 130, 135, 140
27:54but he's 22 years old
27:56he's 6 feet tall
27:57I got a feeling
27:57this kid is going
27:58to be a devastating
27:59welterweight someday.
28:00He could possibly
28:01be one of those guys
28:02could stay at a
28:02junior welterweight
28:03possibly you know
28:04but the one thing
28:05about it
28:05he's extremely physical
28:06too to be that tall
28:07and it's going to be
28:08hard for anybody
28:09to beat him.
28:10I think Mayweather
28:10has a very solid
28:11legitimate 130 pound
28:13challenge on his hands.
28:14Well you've been
28:15saying all along
28:15that you're training
28:16Prince Nassim
28:17at 126 pounds
28:19with an eye
28:20toward a possible
28:20showdown down the
28:21road with Floyd
28:22Mayweather Jr.
28:23Would you fight
28:24this guy 6 feet tall?
28:26He could possibly
28:26be even a more
28:27difficult fighter
28:28than Mayweather
28:28but the one thing
28:29that Prince Nassim
28:30Ahmed has
28:30unbelievable
28:32one punch
28:33punching power
28:33and that can
28:34change anything
28:34and I've been
28:36a long time
28:36since I've saw
28:37a fighter that
28:37can knock people
28:38out with one punch
28:39and that includes
28:39heavyweight today
28:40but he's special
28:42so you can never
28:42discount
28:43Prince Nassim
28:44Ahmed with anyone
28:45he fights
28:45in particular
28:46the way that
28:47he's improving
28:47now.
28:48In fact
28:49when Lennox Lewis
28:50was talking to me
28:50about Ahmed
28:51possibly
28:52and Floyd
28:53Mether
28:53he said
28:53that would be
28:53a great fight
28:54and he said
28:54Mayweather's got
28:55such fast hands
28:56and combinations
28:56that Prince Nassim
28:58might be able
28:58to handle it
28:59but then Prince
29:00can knock him out
29:00with one single
29:01punch too
29:01so it would be
29:02a very interesting
29:03fight.
29:04Meanwhile
29:04you heard the
29:05conversation
29:05between Derek
29:06Gaynor and Jay
29:06Nady
29:07it certainly seemed
29:07to us as though
29:08Gaynor was okay
29:09and could have
29:10continued fighting
29:10Jay Nady
29:11the referee
29:12we're told
29:12has declined
29:13to speak with us
29:14Larry Merchant's
29:15back in the ring
29:15I assume
29:16with Gaynor.
29:17All right Jim
29:18yes I am
29:19with Smoke
29:19you waited a long
29:20time for this
29:21Smoke
29:21and you finally
29:22got a chance
29:23you seem to be
29:25doing so well
29:26in the first round
29:27why did you feel
29:27you had a stand
29:28with him
29:28in the second round?
29:30First of all
29:30I thank my Lord
29:30Savior Jesus Christ
29:31for letting me be okay
29:32I sat there
29:33because I didn't
29:34want him to keep
29:34getting the confidence
29:35to keep coming
29:36so I was showing him
29:37that I could still
29:37I could fight him
29:38inside and box him
29:39and that's what
29:39I was doing
29:40I was winning the fight
29:40the stop was
29:42being matured
29:42but the left hook
29:45that knocked you down
29:46was something
29:46you never saw
29:47was it?
29:48What do you mean
29:48I saw a lot of things
29:49I've been boxing
29:50professional for 12
29:51for 10 years
29:51I've been boxing
29:52since I was
29:52So then he's
29:53a real puncher
29:54He's a good puncher
29:55he's a good puncher
29:56he caught me
29:56a good shot
29:57I mean I went down
29:58the shot
29:58when I got stopped
29:59I just went down
30:00so I wouldn't
30:00continue to get hit
30:01with punches
30:02All right
30:03let's take a look
30:04at the replays
30:05of what happened
30:06here
30:06and you describe
30:07how you saw it
30:09and felt it
30:09Okay
30:10he was throwing
30:11punches at me
30:11I was trying to
30:12slip, slip, slip
30:13he caught me
30:14a decent body shot
30:15I went down here
30:16coming up
30:17so I won't
30:17continue to get punched
30:18caught me
30:19a good hook then
30:20I went down
30:22on one knee
30:22Now that looks
30:24like the second
30:25knockdown
30:25That was the second
30:26knockdown
30:27All right
30:27and I was firm
30:28All right
30:29Now were you
30:30coherent
30:30did you feel
30:31you knew
30:31where you were
30:32and what was
30:32going on
30:32Very much so
30:33He asked me
30:34are you okay
30:34I handed him
30:35my gloves
30:35and I said
30:36I'm fine
30:37If you play it
30:38back you can
30:38hear me tell him
30:39I'm fine
30:40Then he stopped
30:40the fight
30:41The first
30:42knockdown
30:42was more
30:42harder punch
30:43than the second
30:43knockdown
30:44All right
30:45We have
30:46the sound
30:47of that
30:47so let's
30:48see if we
30:48can get that
30:49as the referee
30:50Jane 80
30:51spoke to you
30:51Okay
30:52You still have
30:55good head
30:55movement
30:55called him
30:57a good shot
30:57there
30:57Three
31:01Four
31:03Five
31:04Six
31:05Seven
31:06Eight
31:07You okay
31:08I'm fine
31:09So I said
31:10what
31:11and I said
31:11I'm fine
31:12I'm fine
31:13All right
31:13We saw
31:14what we saw
31:15I asked
31:16Jane 80
31:16what he saw
31:18He says
31:19that he felt
31:20that smoke
31:20was still
31:21not completely
31:22stable on his
31:23feet
31:23and was rocking
31:24a little bit
31:25so it was
31:26a judgment
31:26call
31:27a lot
31:28of people
31:28thought
31:29that he
31:29could have
31:29given you
31:30more chance
31:30but you
31:31were in
31:31serious trouble
31:32in that round
31:33No I wasn't
31:34I was
31:34of course
31:34he dropped
31:35me
31:35yes
31:35with a good
31:35shot
31:36but I
31:36gave him
31:36my gloves
31:37and I
31:37said I
31:37was fine
31:38and I
31:38wanted to
31:39continue
31:39the fight
31:40All right
31:40thank you
31:41Roy
31:42you've
31:43spent a lot
31:43of time
31:44and energy
31:44with your
31:45friend
31:46Smoke
31:46Gaynor
31:46what are
31:47your thoughts
31:48about what
31:48happened
31:49and how
31:49this fight
31:50has ended
31:51well I thought
31:52it was a pretty
31:52premature stoppage
31:53I thought he gave
31:54the ref his gloves
31:55and said he was fine
31:55therefore he should
31:56have been allowed
31:57to continue
31:57this is a championship
31:58fight
31:59this is not a dance
32:00it's not a walk
32:00in the park
32:01this is a fight
32:01you can go down
32:03I went down
32:04Muhammad Ali
32:04went down
32:04the best fighters
32:05go down
32:05if you get up
32:06and you regain
32:07conscience
32:07especially if you're
32:08ahead in the fight
32:09and you are coherent
32:10enough to tell the ref
32:11that you're okay
32:11I feel like the ref
32:12should give you
32:13the chance to fight
32:13now if he would
32:14have gotten
32:15knocked down
32:15again I could
32:16have understood
32:16the ref stopping
32:17but at least
32:17give him a chance
32:18to finish
32:18so that there's
32:18no doubt
32:19in nobody's mind
32:20not only his
32:21or mine
32:21but no doubt
32:22in nobody's mind
32:23watching or hear
32:24and everything
32:25would be cool
32:25alright thank you
32:26very much Smoke
32:27Roy
32:27Jim
32:28alright so
32:30Diego Corrales
32:32states his case
32:33with an impressive
32:34third round
32:35technical knockout
32:36over Derek Gaynor
32:37is he good enough
32:39to face Floyd Mayweather
32:40sometime later on
