00:30Tonight, we're live from Jacksonville, Florida,
00:54where HBO Sports brings you a unique night of boxing.
00:57First, you see New York's Kevin Kelly
00:59taking on local favorite Derek Gaynor.
01:04Then, all-world super middleweight champion Roy Jones
01:07turns his attention back to boxing
01:09facing light heavyweight Eric Lucas.
01:13And finally, we'll show you a replay
01:15of last Friday night's bloody fight
01:16between Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya.
01:22A live look at Roy Jones at ringside
01:25as he prepares to watch his buddy Derek Gaynor
01:28in the opening match.
01:30Then, go into the ring for the second half
01:32of his Deion Sanders-like double
01:34in Jones's matinee performance.
01:37The Jacksonville Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida.
01:40Hello again, everybody. I'm Jim Lafley.
01:42Welcome to this unusual evening
01:44of HBO's World Championship Boxing.
01:46With me, as always, our HBO boxing expert
01:49and world heavyweight boxing champion in the past,
01:52George Foreman.
01:52George, what do you make of Roy Jones' quest
01:54to play basketball and box on the same day?
01:58Well, I would say, like, Shaquille O'Neal would say,
02:00hey, do what you do, but be good at something,
02:04and that that you're good at, leave the other alone.
02:07Roy Jones, I don't think any athlete should dabble
02:09too much in the old sport than the one that you're good at.
02:12Johnny Unitas was a great football player
02:14because he couldn't do anything else.
02:16And I think that once Roy Jones realized
02:18that he can be good at this, he'll leave the other alone.
02:21Will having played 14 minutes of basketball this afternoon
02:23have a physical effect on him in the ring tonight?
02:25Most definitely.
02:26This guy fights not only with his both hands,
02:29but he fights with his feet.
02:30And when he moves and shifts,
02:32he's going to feel some differences on the day of a fight.
02:35I wouldn't advise that for any athlete,
02:37especially boxing is a lot different from any other game.
02:40It really is not a game.
02:42Jones' title defense against Eric Lucas
02:43is the second bout that you'll see tonight.
02:46The first one live, Derek Gaynor against Kevin Kelly.
02:49With me, as always, HBO Boxing analyst Larry Merchant.
02:51Later on, we're going to see the tape
02:52of Chavez versus Delahoya,
02:54touted in advance as the fight of the 90s.
02:56Did it live up to its billing?
02:59Jim, I saw it as a kind of spectacular anti-climax
03:03if there is such an oxymoron.
03:05It had all the excitement of a much-awaited showdown
03:08between a great old fighter and a great young fighter.
03:11It had the drama of blood.
03:13It was, in fact, a kind of ritual sacrifice of an aging king.
03:18But it was a one-sided fight.
03:21A footnote, however, to that one-sided fight
03:23is that Roy Jones, widely regarded as perhaps
03:26the greatest athlete among all the present champions,
03:30has managed the neat trick of turning himself
03:33into a preliminary boy to a week-old fight
03:37because he has chosen to fight an opponent
03:41who can't fight back,
03:44an opponent who is a fall-down guy.
03:47Preliminary or not, of course, he'll be treated lovingly
03:49by this North Florida crowd.
03:51But first, we're going to see Jones' hometown buddy
03:55from Pensacola, Derek Gaynor,
03:56getting his biggest chance yet at 126 pounds
03:59against Kevin Kelly, the Flushing Flash.
04:02Kelly, a past champion in the sport,
04:04trying to make it back to that pinnacle.
04:05You look at the tail of the tape
04:06and see that Kelly is five years older,
04:08by far the more experienced.
04:10Derek Gaynor with only a one-inch reach advantage,
04:14though a height advantage of two inches
04:15at 5'9 to 5'7 for Kelly.
04:18Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer,
04:20Harold Letterman.
04:21The Kevin Kelly-Derek Gaynor fight
04:23is scheduled for 12 rounds.
04:25There is no standing eight count.
04:27The three-knockdown rule is in effect.
04:30Only the referee can stop the fight,
04:31and you cannot be saved by the battle in any round,
04:33including the 12th and final round.
04:35Jim.
04:36All right, Harold, for the intros,
04:37for Kevin Kelly and Derek Gaynor,
04:39let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer.
04:40And now, finally, ladies and gentlemen,

06:11this is our first championship bout
06:13of the evening,

06:17coverweight championship of the world.
06:26Introducing first,
06:27fighting out of the red corner,
06:29wearing white trimmed with gold,
06:31and weighing in at 126 pounds.
06:34His professional record,
06:3517 victories against three defeats.
06:3810 of his 17 victories are by knockout.
06:41Ladies and gentlemen,
06:43from Pensacola, Florida,
06:45introducing the North American
06:47Boxing Federated Champion,
06:50and the challenger,
06:52Derek Smoke McCain!
07:03And here's the one with across the ring,
07:05fighting out of the blue corner,
07:06wearing yellow trimmed with green,
07:09and weighing in at 124 and three quarter pounds.
07:13His professional record,
07:1543 victories,
07:1630 by knockout,
07:18against only one defeat,
07:19with two draws,
07:21and he has captured two world championships.
07:24Ladies and gentlemen,
07:25from Flushing, New York,
07:27presenting the WBU,
07:29featherweight champion of the world,
07:32the first and last,
07:35Kevin Halley!
07:39Kevin Halley!
07:44All right, right there.
07:47Gentlemen, we're going to just address them.
07:49All right, low blows.
07:50Here you go for both of them.
07:51Stand up.
07:51Stand up.
07:52And here, down.
07:53Slow blow.
07:53Here, down.
07:53Anything above?
07:54That's fair.
07:54All right, fellas.
07:56Protect yourselves at all times.
07:57And maybe at all times.
07:58Questions, gentlemen?
07:59Questions?
08:00Good luck to both of them.
08:00Good luck, guys.
08:02Roy Jones has been a real loyal friend to Gaynor,
08:05getting him many opportunities for fights on his undercards.
08:09We'll see if he's done him a favor
08:11by getting him this opportunity
08:13against a much more experienced fighter.
08:17We'll also see how much Kevin Kelly has left.
08:20Hey, champion.
08:22Top!
08:23Kelly was unbeaten
08:25before his January 7, 1995 war with Alejandro Gonzalez.
08:30It hasn't been easy for him since then.
08:32Derek Gaynor wants to remind Kelly
08:34of some of the punishment he's taken
08:36in the past two years
08:37as he starts out more aggressively
08:40than is normally his style.
08:42Two southpaws in there against each other.
08:45Now, as a veteran fighter,
08:48the one thing you want your opposition to do,
08:50a younger fighter,
08:51is to come out trying to punch.
08:53Get yourself winded,
08:54and then the veteran takes over.
08:56So Gaynor's got to pace himself.
08:59Don't do anything out of the ordinary.
09:00Kelly's job tonight
09:13will be to keep his head moving.
09:15You just can't stand in front of this guy
09:17and not move your neck from side to side.
09:20He's tall.
09:21He's got the reach advantage.
09:25And any time, because he's so thin,
09:27he can slip a straight left hand
09:29right on your chin.
09:31So Kelly need the head movement
09:32to get inside of Gaynor's dad.
09:34That's right.
09:35And when you're fighting
09:36the younger, inexperienced fighters,
09:38they throw a lot of shots.
09:39They don't even know they're going to do it.
09:41And those shots hurt.
09:42They open up cuts.
09:44You've got to keep your head moving.
09:47Kelly's saying to us yesterday,
09:49all you have to do is look at the two of us
09:51to see what the fight is all about.
09:53I've got to get inside and go at his body.
09:56He wants to keep me out
09:57at the end of his long punching ring.
09:59It may not be the smartest thing to do
10:02because this thin guy has been accustomed
10:05to the thicker guys
10:06because he's tall going to his body.
10:08He knows how to fight that kind of defense.
10:12Kelly landing the left hand of the body.
10:15Gaynor staying upstairs
10:16and trying to fend Kevin off with the jab
10:18as Kelly increasingly is trying to wade in
10:22and get inside on Gaynor.
10:30Kelly is also going up against reflexes.
10:33Sometimes you throw a shot
10:34and this guy just does something.
10:37You don't even... he doesn't know what he's going to do.
10:38So you've got to keep your defense,
10:40your hands up at all times.
10:41Kevin Kelly won the first 41 fights
11:07in his professional career
11:08and his last five fights
11:10a loss, a draw, and a technical draw.
11:16What Kelly want to do in the first few rounds
11:19is stay active, keep your point system up,
11:21don't try to hit this guy with your hardest punch.
11:30Okay, you're doing good.
11:31You know what I want you to do?
11:33I want you to... listen to me good.
11:35I want you to smooth out a little bit.
11:36On your stocking, you're a little too choppy now.
11:38Give me a little float.
11:40You're working too hard with that jab, man.
11:42I want you to shoot it off,
11:43but don't load up on me.
11:44You ain't trying to knock him out with no jab.
11:46Soon as you start touching him with your jab,
11:48damn through your left hand.
11:50You can't hit him with a jab,
11:51you can't hit him with a left hand.
11:53Stay away on the outside.
11:54Don't load it on the inside.
11:56Don't load it on the inside.
11:57Don't load it on the inside.
11:57Number two, he's only taking the...
11:59You feel the rope coming out of my head.
12:00Keep your jab working on him.
12:02He ain't got to touch him at all, though.
12:04When he's making a mistake,
12:06then he's making a mistake with your left hand.
12:07And leave those hands to be going.
12:09You got it?
12:10And leave the hands to go.
12:11Okay, brother?
12:13I'll try.
12:13I'll try.
12:14I'll try.
12:14I'll try.
12:17We really won't know.
12:20Don't know what kind of fight this is going to be
12:22until when and if Kelly tags Gaynor
12:26with something meaningful.
12:28And you saw the low punch output for Kelly
12:31in the first round.
12:32Only 27 attempted punches.
12:35His trainer, Phil Borja,
12:36is going to want him to throw that many jabs,
12:39let alone that many punches.
12:41He wants a lot more punch output from Kelly.
12:44And you'll notice Kelly moves his head
12:48once a punch is thrown.
12:49You got to keep that head in motion at all times.
12:55Gaynor landing a little counter
12:56as Kelly lunged inside.
13:03Now, Kelly also,
13:04because he's fighting a younger opponent
13:06with a lot of muscle tension,
13:07use a lot of feints to make him get tired.
13:16Every time you use a feint,
13:17he'll throw a shot.
13:20Gaynor has begun throwing punches
13:22with more authority in the last year or two, George.
13:24Up to that point,
13:25he was primarily a slapper.
13:27As he tires,
13:29as this fight goes on,
13:31he's liable to open the glove up
13:32and start slapping again.
13:40Kelly is playing the wrong game.
13:42He's looking for one or two shots.
13:44That's not going to happen that easy.
13:46But he landed a left hand over the top
13:48and has gotten Gaynor's attention
13:50as he now pins him against the ropes
13:52and tries to go to the body.
13:54Kevin Kelly thinks that his punching power
13:56can make the difference against Gaynor,
13:58and right now he is rocking him.
14:02Very strong sequence of body punches.
14:07And Gaynor with a big comeback!
14:14And with no head movement, George,
14:16Kelly was a sitting duck for that combination.
14:19And most importantly,
14:20sometimes you don't want to wake up
14:22these sleeping giants this early in the fight.
14:26Make him do this a little later
14:27after you use up a little muscle tension.
14:29Make him do this a little later
14:30because smoke has also
14:33can make some fire.
14:38Hard left-hand shot
14:39by Derek Smoke Gaynor.
14:49A lot more leather in round two
14:51than was the case in round one
14:53on both sides.
14:54Now, Kelly, as a veteran,
15:00should know
15:01don't follow a puncher.
15:04No! No!
15:05Quick! Quick!
15:08One thing no fighter wants to do
15:10is follow a puncher
15:13around the ring.
15:14You let him follow you.
15:15No! No! No!
15:18No! No! No!
15:18No! No! No!
15:19No! No! No!
15:19No! No! No!
15:20No! No! No! No!
15:20No! No! No! No!
15:21No! No! No! No!
15:22No! No! No! No!
15:23No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No
15:53Yeah. Okay. On the inside, keep working the body.
15:57Look at me. On the inside, keep working the body.
16:00You got that? But don't lay outside of his punches, Kev.
16:04I don't want you outside. I want you inside.
16:06Okay?
16:08Here we see that Gaynor standing outside is beating Kelly to the punch.
16:15And that's like being able to start an automobile race faster than your opponent.
16:20There goes Roy Jones leaving his ringside seat where he's been rooting for his buddy Derek Gaynor to go back to his dressing room.
16:29And Roy Jones has a habit of tempting fate by staying at ringside very close to fight time to root for Smoke Gaynor.
16:39Now, for the first time, Kevin Kelly is starting to use his faints.
16:44You got to make this kid use up some of that energy by faking him.
16:50And every time you hit these youngsters, they're going to pay you back.
16:55So you better be covering up after you touch them.
16:57You heard Alton Merkerson between both the first and second and second and third rounds
17:02in his discussions with Gaynor saying,
17:05you got to throw the right hand before you try to land the left.
17:08At least touch him with the right hand dead before you try to bring that power punch.
17:11Another good body shot by Kelly.
17:15Instructions from his corner.
17:17Trying to weaken the taller, thinner Gaynor.
17:22There again, Kelly has his head standing up one spot, not moving it.
17:27I'm not sure Kevin Kelly had total respect for Derrick Gaynor before the start of the fight.
17:48I think Gaynor has gotten his attention now.
17:51Gaynor's real effective with this overhand left.
17:54It seems like he can't miss it.
18:02This is referee Frank Santore telling Smoke Gaynor not to hold Kevin Kelly.
18:11And Kevin Kelly's trainer, Phil Borgia, made it clear that he would talk to officials
18:16about Gaynor's habit of holding.
18:17There's that sneaky overhand left again.
18:25Whenever Gaynor wants to get his attention, he throws that overhand left.
18:30Trippling up on the jab there.
18:33Derrick Gaynor still, for the most part, beating Kevin Kelly to the punt.
18:36This will be called a slip.
18:41That's that quick overhand left.
18:43It's going to be called a slip.
18:45All of what you want, but it hurts.
18:47What might have happened there is that in the process of seeing one fighter miss a punch
18:53and twist around, he might have missed the punch that landed.
18:57We'll get a look at that later.
19:03Gaynor sees the...
19:05And now Gaynor goes down.
19:07That hurt.
19:08This is going to be called a knockdown.
19:11This is a knockdown.
19:12The previous one was ruled a slip.
19:14And that, of course, has implications for the scorecard,
19:19where Kelly will get extra credit and Gaynor will not.
19:22Absolutely.
19:23And it looked like a clean knockdown by Gaynor.
19:32Don't get too cocky, man.
19:34Don't get too cocky.
19:36When you hurt this guy, man, when you hurt this guy,
19:40don't just weigh it in on him.
19:41My knockdown, Coach.
19:42Yeah, come on, come on.
19:43Listen to him.
19:44When you hurt this guy, he'll fight out of desperation.
19:46I want you to keep him long all the time.
19:49Keep him long all the time.
19:50Don't rush in and walk on him.
19:51He'll throw some stuff out of desperation.
19:53Keep boxing.
19:54Keep boxing.
19:55Now, you can fight on the inside.
19:57You lost two fights because you didn't fight on the inside.
19:59You're tired with this guy.
20:00You rip something off and get out.
20:01All right, Coach.
20:02Don't you lay in there and walk out without leaving nothing with him.
20:04You understand?
20:05Okay?
20:05Yeah.
20:06All right.
20:06Let's see if we can take a look and see what happened.
20:09There was the knockdown.
20:10A clean, hard punch to Gaynor.
20:13Gaynor says, yeah, you got me.
20:17Good man.
20:18And we didn't see what preceded that, but I have a feeling that Gaynor had his foot on top
20:24of Kevin Kelly's foot, pinning Kelly's shoe when Kelly went down.
20:27And that may be why the referee elected the ruler to slip.
20:31Let's see how Gaynor reacts to having taken that big punch.
20:38And knowing that if he misses, something heavy can come back at him.
20:42Let's see if that will change the momentum of the fight, the momentum of the fight, which
20:47up to that point had belonged mostly to Derek Smoke Gaynor.
20:54Kelly Kelly, Kevin Kelly has taken him a few rounds to understand that this Gaynor fights
20:59better moving backwards.
21:00You've got to let him come forward a bit and counter him for a couple of rounds.
21:06At this point early in the fourth round, Gaynor seems less interested in throwing those big leads.
21:30He is so dangerous.
21:33He's like a cat.
21:34You corner him, you're going to get scratched up bad.
21:46Half of the combination by Gaynor landed.
21:49The right hand missed.
21:50The left hand found some Kevin Kelly turf.
21:53Kelly's right eye swelling just a little bit.
22:01You'll recall that badly swollen eyes helped to cost him the Gonzalez fight.
22:10Now, for the first time, Kelly is using an overhand left.
22:14And he landed it solidly there.
22:16It was because he closed in the range a little bit.
22:19He's standing too far away from Smoke.
22:21And Smoke is getting all in the heart, the lead shot.
22:24Close it up and be the inside fighter.
22:28And you heard Alton Murchison between rounds saying to Smoke,
22:32don't forget the fight when you get inside.
22:35You lost two fights because you wouldn't fight on the inside.
22:38You must prove you'll do it here.
22:40Kelly's level of caution in going in at Gaynor tells you
22:54that Gaynor has landed some solid stuff early on.
23:00Gaynor confidence gets better and better
23:02because of the proof on Kelly's eye.
23:13Three punch combination, four punches, five punches,
23:16six punches by Gaynor.
23:18And Kelly goes down, and his right eye is a miss.
23:21He took a shot early before that combination landed
23:25and was just trying to cover up and get through the round.
23:30Bill Borson yelling at the referee
23:32that Kelly's been thumbed in the eye,
23:35and now Kelly comes to Frank Santori
23:37to make the point himself.
23:38Sit down. Sit down.
23:40Give me that focus.
23:42Give me this mouth, please.
23:43All right, let's go.
23:45Look at me.
23:45Get back and look at me.
23:47Look at me.
23:48We trained to fight with no eyes or not.
23:51Look at me!
23:51We are trained to fight with no goddamn arms.
23:55You got that, Concer?
23:56You got one eye.
23:57That means you got to work that right side
23:59even more on the slips.
24:01You got me?
24:02Concer?
24:03It don't mean a thing, Kev.
24:05Remember what our motto is.
24:06Don't say it's true.
24:06It don't mean a thing.
24:07Spit it out.
24:08I'll double the nose, Kevin.
24:08Make this.
24:13Take it down.
24:15Take it down.
24:15Take it down.
24:15Take it down.
24:16There you saw the...
24:20Off the right hand, Kelly started to hold his eye,
24:23claiming he has been thumbed.
24:26You think anything has happened in this fight so far, guys?
24:30Wow.
24:31Kevin Kelly's right eye is functionally closed.
24:34It's a total mess.
24:36And he's fighting like he want to win anyway.
24:40And you heard his trainer, Phil Borgia, saying,
24:42forget it.
24:43You're just going to have to work around it.
24:44And down goes Gaynor.
24:47And he's hurt.
24:48He's wobbled.
24:49He's got more than two minutes to try to survive this fight.
25:00Very wobbly legs for Gaynor.
25:03Very wobbly legs.
25:04Very wobbly legs.
25:04Kevin Kelly.
25:15Kevin Kelly.
25:18Drawing on his desperation, and now he takes leather in return.
25:22On the blind side.
25:25Yeah.
25:25Kevin Kelly was at ringside when Arturo Gatti came back from two eyes like this to knock out his opponent.
25:34He's trying to do the same thing, and suddenly the life has come back to gain her.
25:42Kelly remembering to go to the body as they clinch.
25:45He's blind on the right side and swinging away hard from the left.
25:48Midway through the fifth, Gainer's been down in the round.
25:59Gainer's starting to pump punches into that closed Kevin Kelly right eye.
26:04The crowd, of course, is heavily pro gamer.
26:23Turn and lift the handle over here!
26:29Don't join for bacon and play to the Sonic drive.
26:33They'll try to keep his motivation up
26:36regardless of what damage Kelly's able to do.
26:42Kelly came out throwing punches in bunches.
26:44George, now he's trying to load up one at a time.
26:47Well, he's desperate now. His eye is about to close.
26:50He knows now what he was trying to do earlier.
26:53He has to do now.
26:56He's got to land a good shot, and he's got to do it quicker.
26:58This kid is going to pick on that eye
27:00until that eye closes clearly.
27:02But, George, the way he's running away, Gaynor,
27:04just trying to take an occasional wide swing,
27:07he really isn't in position to take advantage of the bad eye.
27:10He's just looking to survive right now.
27:12Well, he'll survive, and if he continues to go round after round,
27:16that right eye of Kevin Kelly
27:20is just going to get worse and worse
27:22because he cannot see him on one side.
27:24As Kevin Kelly goes back to his corner,
27:27he goes to one of the greatest cut men in the business, Al Gavin.
27:31And it's up to Gavin now to keep Kevin in the fight.
27:34Take close attention to me. Look in my eye.
27:39Look what you did with one eye.
27:42Right? Pay attention to me.
27:44Winch this out.
27:45You need to pick it up when you're on the inside.
27:48He's running. He ain't gonna win the title one.
27:50You understand me?
27:51Increase the jab, work your knees, and work your turnovers.
27:56He's there when you're on the inside. You got me. You got you.
27:59You trust me?
28:00Here's the knockdown as the almost one-eyed Kevin Kelly
28:05lands a looping left.
28:08Has anybody seen Kelly?
28:11I've seen Kelly, and he's never disappointed us
28:15with any of his fights.
28:17Here he comes back, trying to finish it,
28:20but Gaynor hangs on.
28:22Kelly's a brave soul.
28:24Round six begins.
28:26Derrick Gaynor's punch-out glitch, which had been up around 60,
28:34slipped to 27 in the fifth round
28:37as he was running away from Kevin most of the time.
28:39Harold Letterman, your card.
28:41Okay, Jim.
28:42The referee, Frank Centauri, called time to clean the water
28:45in the corner of Derrick Gaynor.
28:46I got a 3-1-1.
28:48Derrick Gaynor, Kevin Kelly rapidly catching up
28:51after that 10-8 round in the fifth.
28:53I'll tell you the honest and honest truth,
28:55the third round I would have scored 10-10
28:57because I really thought they were both clean knockdowns,
28:59and you know I never score even rounds,
29:01but that would absolutely one knockdown
29:03neutralize the other.
29:04Gaynor two points ahead, Kelly catching up.
29:06But, Harold, how can you score at 10-10
29:09when one was ruled a legal knockdown?
29:11Jim, Jim, it makes no difference.
29:13I can score around 10-8 without a knockdown.
29:15I can score around 10-8 with a knockdown.
29:18I have that option.
29:19I so choose to exercise that option,
29:21I would have scored a 10-10.
29:23It was certainly an even run.
29:25I thought that Gaynor's knockdown was a clean knockdown.
29:27Kelly's was a clean knockdown.
29:29Nothing against the rules of the United.
29:31Larry?
29:32I have the fight even because I've given Kelly
29:34a 10-8 round as well as a 10-9 round,
29:37three rounds to two for Gaynor,
29:39but I have it even on points.
29:41Gaynor's starting to fire again, smokes the left.
29:46Kelly is playing the wrong game.
29:48He's waiting and waiting and waiting,
29:50and believe me, that's Gaynor's game.
29:52You just gotta throw punches,
29:54keep punches coming all the time.
29:56That's the only way you're gonna keep Gaynor thinking.
29:58You stand back a moment,
30:00he slings that powerful straight left hand.
30:02And I think he's starting to hurt Gaynor
30:04to the body with shots like that.
30:06And hurt him, he's hurting him good.
30:08That's correct.
30:10Hard left hand shot by Gaynor,
30:11right on the blind eye.
30:12And that stops Kelly for the moment.
30:14Kelly, when he waits,
30:15Gaynor decides,
30:16you're not gonna do anything,
30:17I'm gonna do something.
30:19That's all you wanna make a veteran do is wait, wait.
30:44And then you tag him.
30:46Gainer able to load up the left hand
30:49and just pound away on Kevin Kelly's blind side.
30:53And I think I agree with you, George.
30:55I think Kelly needs a hotter flurry of punches,
30:58more activity.
30:59And when you're not throwing punches,
31:01you got to move your head constantly,
31:03constantly barbed weave.
31:07Quick right hand by Kelly as he sneaked in.
31:10Gainer backing away, backing away, backing away.
31:14He'll try to use the jab to stay out of trouble.
31:17And pinpoint opportunities to target
31:19that right-eye of Kelly's.
31:21Still to come, our videotape replay
31:24of Julio Cesar Chavez versus Oscar De La Hoya.
31:27You haven't missed it if you tuned in late.
31:30Stay with us.
31:31Right now, Roy Jones is being upstaged
31:33by a preliminary fight
31:35as well as the tape of a week-old fight.
31:40I need you to work your hands.
31:42If you don't want to get hit,
31:43you got to get inside and work your hands.
31:45Do you got me?
31:45Give your head to me, Kevin.
31:47Do you hear what I just said?
31:48Kevin, you got to be on this man's ass, damn it.
31:52Call that filthy.
31:53Do you understand me?
31:54I understand you.
31:55Okay, you can't be outside
31:57because then you're going to get hit
31:58with the ones you can't see.
31:59Work your way in with the jab and let it go.
32:01He don't want to fight when you're on the inside.
32:03I got you.
32:03And if you have to,
32:04you know where that head goes
32:05when he's pulling you down, god damn it.
32:07If the ref ain't going to do it,
32:08we got to do it.
32:09I got you.
32:10Bad things.
32:11Combination.
32:12Give me the mouth.
32:13There you see
32:15the big left hand
32:17that Kelly couldn't see.
32:21It's not has anybody seen Kelly,
32:24it's can Kelly see.
32:26You heard the instructions from the corner.
32:29The little guy has to get inside
32:30on the taller guy.
32:33Round seven begins.
32:34George,
32:35we saw a little trace of blood
32:37under Kelly's right eye.
32:38Is that coming from inside the eye
32:40or out of the swelling?
32:42I think there's a cut underneath that eye
32:44but we can't see because of the swelling.
32:46What Kelly needs to do now
32:48is move over to the left side
32:50and run this fella back to the other side.
32:53He's allowing him to go on the blind side.
32:55All you got to do is run around there
32:56and chase him in the opposite direction.
33:01So you want him to move to his left?
33:04Yeah, you want to move him back around
33:05on your side where you got the good eye.
33:07And all you got to do is run over there
33:09and chase him the other way.
33:12Kelly gets tagged on the blind eye again.
33:15If Gaynor starts leading
33:16with that overhand left,
33:18he'll do damage to that eye.
33:30I don't know why his trainer
33:31wouldn't tell him,
33:32Kelly, go on the other side.
33:33Don't let him move to his left
33:37in that fashion.
33:38Make him move to the right.
33:48Gaynor swung wildly
33:50and gave Kevin Kelly a chance
33:51to land two body shots there
33:53and Kevin didn't throw him.
33:54He's going to move to his left.
33:56He's going to move to his left.
34:01Neither man seemingly
34:03with a clear picture here
34:04in round seven
34:05of what he wants to do.
34:09These business can pick up greatly
34:11if only Kevin Kelly goes over
34:13and chase him in the opposite direction.
34:16He's allowing him to move
34:17in a direction that he wants to move.
34:19Three, two, three, two, three, two, two, one!
34:22Is this the same thing as failing to cut off the ring?
34:26You don't really want to cut it off.
34:28You just want to move him.
34:29If you want to move,
34:30allow him to move where he's ineffective.
34:34But you got to go around and...
34:36just like herding cattle,
34:38make the cows go in another direction.
34:43Eric Gaynor using his hand speed and foot speed
34:47to land combinations against Kevin Kellett.
34:50Gaynor has controlled much of the fight
34:53with his quickness, his speed,
34:55and his willingness to get off first.
34:57Like that.
35:07Kevin Kellett with a kind of a seeing eye around,
35:10following Gaynor from spot to spot,
35:13not doing much damage when he gets there.
35:15You just can't follow him around.
35:17You got to get up close and keep your gloves on him.
35:19in some fashion.
35:21Doesn't have to be hard.
35:22Just keep your gloves on him.
35:25It's only a 17-foot square ring.
35:28A lot of people thought that would work against Gaynor,
35:30but Kelly hasn't been able to turn it to his advantage so far.
35:36And as Smoke Gaynor closes in on a possible upset win
35:39over Kevin Kelly,
35:41Roy Jones
35:42masks in the enjoyment of his own personally constructed day.
35:47Basketball for the USBL Jacksonville Barracudas in the afternoon,
35:52and now a title defense at 168 pounds tonight.
35:56I can't see if he's in any danger of having the injury.
35:58Okay.
35:59Okay.
36:00As long as he's not taking too many left-hand shots, he's okay.
36:02Okay.
36:03No, I think you can go.
36:05Yeah, you can go.
36:06I can't see out of him, but I'm fighting.
36:08I'm ready.
36:09Let's go.
36:10Can you see out of the other eye?
36:11He's fine.
36:12He's not taking time.
36:13You can see out of that eye.
36:14I can see.
36:15Okay.
36:16Look at him.
36:17Look at him.
36:18Look at him.
36:19Look at him.
36:20You're outside.
36:21This is bull.
36:22You know, when you have a fighter cut under one eye, that's okay.
36:26You're allowed a fight to go.
36:27But when he can't...
36:28He clearly cannot see.
36:29This is too much of a disadvantage.
36:32You would stop it?
36:33I would stop the fight.
36:34Hit this water.
36:35Nothing to be ashamed of.
36:36You can't see.
36:37You can't fight.
36:38And not only can you not see, it's visible to your opponent.
36:41When you fought Alex Stewart and both of your eyes swelled,
36:45were you still able to see out of it?
36:47I was able to see.
36:48It's one thing to be able to see.
36:50He said he could not see.
36:52Yep.
36:57Well, in that last round, Kelly's punch-out quick dropped to 25.
37:01So he's badly hampered by the inability to see out of the right eye,
37:05and it's hurting him in a lot of different ways,
37:08both defending himself and mounting offense.
37:10But now here he comes again as he's able to pin Gainer against the ropes.
37:14And this is when he does his best work.
37:16Well, that Gainer's sharp as a cap.
37:19He knows exactly what he's doing.
37:21Hey, get out of there, people!
37:26Get out of there, people!
37:27Get out of there!
37:32Sharp left cross there by Derek Gainer.
37:35Misses short with that one, lunges, but doesn't get hurt
37:38because Kevin Kelly isn't able to follow up.
37:43Kelly concentrating on the body when he goes to the ropes.
37:46That could help him.
37:48Gives him a chance to come back and go upstairs.
37:51Gainer's hand still fast.
37:53One thing about when your eyes are closed,
37:56you have this itchy feeling all over your body,
37:59and you just want to touch and protect yourself
38:01a lot more than you want to fight.
38:07Kelly stunned.
38:08Stunned now as Gainer pounds him against the ropes.
38:11He got hit twice on the blind eye.
38:13Now, Gainer has been the aggressive.
38:22About as aggressive as we've ever seen Derek Gainer be in the ring.
38:26Solid left-hand lead.
38:31Can't fault Kelly's guts.
38:33He's trying everything he's got.
38:35You wonder why Gainer would even fight this kind of fight
38:38when he can really clearly stay on the outside and win.
38:41Blood trickling from Kevin Kelly's nostrils now.
38:44Both sides bleeding.
38:45Down goes Gainer.
38:46A left hand.
38:47A big, big left hand.
38:49And Gainer may not get up.
38:52He will not get up.
38:54Six, seven...
38:55Why would he fight a fight like that?
38:57Arturo got it.
38:58Kevin Kelly has done it.
39:00Arturo...
39:01Gainer, his confidence soaring,
39:07got aggressive in that round
39:09and gave Kelly an opportunity, George.
39:12It's the old Billy Kahn, Joe Lua story.
39:14You win in a fight.
39:15I'm going for a knockout also.
39:17And the hit happens to him.
39:20Billy Kahn...
39:21And shades of Arturo got he in the garden
39:24a couple months ago
39:25as Kevin Kelly, blind in the right eye,
39:28scores a dramatic bailout knockout of Derek Gainer.
39:32Gainer is still flat on his back.
39:37Kevin Kelly is a quality athlete.
39:40He's a real prize fighter.
39:44This is what real prize fighters do.
39:47They never give up.
39:49They keep coming at you.
39:51And we saw last weekend
39:56that one fighter with a bad eye
39:58didn't keep coming at you.
40:03You saw Kevin Kelly there
40:05trying to lift Gainer up.
40:06He wanted to pay his respect to Derek Gainer
40:09because I think Gainer gave him
40:10a much better battle than Kevin
40:12ever expected from the young man.
40:14But at the end of the day,
40:16the old pro fighting in his 47th fight
40:21had the answer.
40:29Gainer feeling strong,
40:31looking at an opponent
40:32that he felt he had on the ropes
40:36and walks right into a big, wild left hand.
40:41Dropped his right hand
40:42at the same moment that he threw the left.
40:44That was the difference.
40:46Watch the right hand drop
40:47when Gainer commits to this left hand.
40:49Boom.
40:50All night he's been landing that shot.
40:53Those have been the same shot
40:54that knocked him down
40:55one after the other.
40:56Each knocked down, same punch.
40:58Why would Gainer risk such a...
41:01to go mix it up with a club fighter like that?
41:04Home crowd was chanting.
41:06George, home crowd was chanting.
41:08Home crowd wanted to give him
41:09a big ovation for the knockout.
41:11He wanted to reward him,
41:12so he went after it, and he got caught.
41:15Stay out of your hometowns.
41:17Wasn't the crowd chanting for Khan?
41:19Against Joe Lewis?
41:20That's right.
41:22Let's go to Michael Buffer
41:23for the particulars
41:24of this dramatic comeback KO.
41:26How about a round of applause
41:31for two featherweights in this ring,
41:33who for seven and one-half rounds
41:35gave us one hell of a war.
41:37The end comes at two minutes and 16 seconds
41:43of round number eight.
41:45The winner by knockout victory,
41:48and still WBU featherweight champion of the world,
41:53the Flushing Flash, Kevin Bailey.
41:58Kevin Bailey.
42:02Kevin!
42:04Kevin!
42:06Kevin!
42:08Kevin!
42:10Kevin!
42:11Kevin!
42:14Kevin!
42:15Kevin!
42:16Kevin!
42:17Kevin!
42:18Kevin!
42:19Kevin!
42:20Kevin!
42:21Kevin!
42:22Kevin!
42:23Kevin!
42:24Kevin!
42:25Kevin!
42:26Kevin!
42:27Kevin!
42:28Kevin!
42:29Final punch stat numbers
42:30between Kevin Kelly and Derrick Gaynor,
42:31and you can see that Gaynor had the edge
42:33in punches thrown.
42:34Punches landed.
42:35Connect percentage.
42:36As George Foreman pointed out,
42:38he was tactically in control of the fight,
42:41but he gave away that control by getting aggressive
42:44and trying to do something spectacular.
42:46It's the old story.
42:47You're winning the fight.
42:48You're doing it easily.
42:49Why go in there and mix it up with a guy
42:51who's knocked you down already once or twice?
42:53Stay away.
42:54Stay away.
42:55Get those points,
42:56and don't go for the big one.
42:58Let's go to Larry Merchant with the dramatic winner,
43:01Kevin Kelly.
43:02Kevin Kelly, congratulations.
43:05How close were you to having to stop fighting?
43:09I don't know.
43:10I got determination when my eyes started closing.
43:12I got thumbed in the eye.
43:13They thought that I was a punch that did it.
43:15I got thumbed.
43:16I got hit with the thumb in the thumb area,
43:18and it started closing my eye.
43:20My eyes, you know, started swelling up.
43:22I fought with one eye.
43:23What caught him was that midfield trained on switching.
43:26I boxed righty and I boxed lefty,
43:27and when I switched, he didn't expect it.
43:29And what happened was he came in with that left hand down,
43:32and I came over the top with my left hand right down on his jaw,
43:34and crash came down.
43:37After being so successful staying away from you,
43:40why do you think he came at you and gave you that opportunity
43:44to land a crunching punch?
43:46The eye gave him a full sense of confidence,
43:48and what happened was when he seen the eye swollen,
43:50he seen that he actually had my title.
43:52He had me beat.
43:53The one thing that you never sleep on is a champion.
43:55Today I answer a lot of questions.
43:56I want to thank the main person right here.
43:58Right here.
43:59I get choked up.
44:00This is my wife.
44:01She believes in me.
44:02She said I can do it.
44:03I can regain the title of the champ.
44:05I want to thank my team.
44:06I want to thank everybody for coming out, watching,
44:09supporting the game for giving me a great fight.
44:11Kevin, in the corner you were constantly urged
44:13that you had to fight with one eye.
44:15Were you anywhere near saying, I have to stop this?
44:18No, never.
44:19I never told Phil that I'm going to stop fighting.
44:21I had a closed eye.
44:22I had two closed eyes when I fought Alejandro Gonzalez.
44:25I'm used to it.
44:26I fought like it before.
44:27This is what makes champions.
44:28I think Gainer learned a lesson today also.
44:30That's what makes champions.
44:31He fought a man with a closed eye.
44:33I was, you know, he's a great fighter.
44:35I got to give him credit.
44:36He was better than you thought.
44:38I want to say crunch fitness in New York City and no fear.
44:41Thank you for staying behind me and the support.
44:43Let's take a look at that knockdown,
44:45and you describe what was going on in your mind
44:47and what you saw then.
44:49Well, right here we were working on switching over.
44:51So I seen Gainer's left hand being down.
44:53So what I planned, I mean, his right hand being down.
44:54So I did, I come over the top.
44:55I switch, bang, left hand.
44:57I turn righty.
44:58I was punching, we call that the crunch
45:01because what happens is I turn righty,
45:03but I throw it over the top, as you can see right here.
45:05I switch righty as I'm throwing it.
45:07Bing!
45:08And I catch Gainer.
45:09Gainer is a great fighter.
45:10I'm going to tell you something.
45:11Another year or two, he could be champ of the world.
45:13All right.
45:14Thank you very much, Kevin Kelly, for a great fight.
45:16And thank you, Smoke Gainer, for also a terrific fight.
45:21Did you get a false sense of security from his bad eye
45:25and fight his fight at the end?
45:27He's got a lot of ability, baby.
45:28Good job, baby.
45:29He's got a lot of ability.
45:30First of all, I'd like to thank the Lord for giving me the strength to do what I do.
45:32I'd like to say what's up to everybody at Pensacola.
45:34Kevin caught me a good shot.
45:35I was winning the fight, but I got a little careless.
45:38You know, if you get careless, then you can get caught.
45:40And if you get caught, you can get knocked out if you don't see the shot.
45:42Why did you get careless?
45:43Because you saw his eye closed and you felt that he couldn't see your punches coming?
45:47No, I was just moving and I dropped my hand and he switched off and caught him with a shot.
45:51That's all.
45:52Do you feel you let one get away by not being more disciplined and just boxing and being willing to take that?
45:58No, I'm very disciplined.
45:59No, Kevin Kelly, two-time world champion, what can I say?
46:02He caught him with a good shot, but I'll be back.
46:04It's not the end of Derek, Smoke Gainer.
46:05I'll be back.
46:06Thank you very much, Smoke.
46:07Back to you, Jim.
46:08All right, just a final parenthetical note.
46:12Smoke Gainer was leading on two of the three scorecards, one by 66-64, one by 66-65 at the time that Kelly scored the knockout.
46:21Third scorecard had the fight even.
46:23Kevin Kelly's had 47 fights, spent the last seven years in this weight class at 126.
46:28Talking about maybe going up to 130 at this late stage of his career.
46:32Bad idea or good idea?
46:33Well, Kevin Kelly has come of age.
46:35He showed for a fact that he can punch now so the extra weight will not be a hindrance to him.
46:40He can do it all.
46:41I had counted him out.
46:42I've got to be honest about this.
46:43I thought the fight should have been stopped.
46:45He proved for the fact he went out desperately and he got the gold nugget that time.
46:50Hey, if you're in desperate straights, fight desperately.
46:52That's something Chavez didn't do last week.
46:54This is a real champion, this Kevin Kelly.
46:56He's proven himself to me if that means anything.
46:59Some unbelievable opponents for him at 130 if he goes up there.
47:01I mean, you never know if you're going to see him against Arturo Gatti or Azuma Nelson or some of those guys, but it might be fun.
47:07All right.
47:08Still to come later on, the taped replay of Julio Cesar Chavez against Oscar De La Hoya.
47:13It took place last Friday night in Las Vegas.
47:16If you've been on another planet, maybe you get a fresh chance to see it without knowing what went on.
47:20But if you're one of us and you're part of the boxing world, you know about it.
47:24You just might be curious to see it either for the first time.
47:27For the first time.
