00:00Okay, well, I think I found a problem.
00:11The ground wires come loose from the harness.
00:13You know, this is not how I expected to spend my morning off, Mark.
00:17Yeah, I owe you a coffee.
00:20Better be a fancy coffee.
00:21What does the phone say?
00:23Well, right now, it doesn't say anything.
00:26Let's see.
00:28Oh, here we go.
00:29Okay, it says we need a rivet tool,
00:32and we need to use it to make a new connection on the mainframe.
00:37Are you sure about this?
00:39Internet doesn't lie.
00:43What if you don't have a rivet tool?
00:46Rex, can you leave it to the professionals, please?
00:52You want to tie them up and throw them in the trunk?
00:54All right.
00:55Okay, Jesse.
01:07Hit it.
01:12I think we know who the real professionals are.
01:14All right.
01:18High five.
01:31Ah, here's the old man.
01:33Jayden, you know Dad hates being called old.
01:39I'll speak for myself, Alan.
01:41And you might stick to correcting your own mistakes.
01:46Help yourself, son.
01:49Five o'clock somewhere, right?
01:50Yeah, she'll be in the Devereaux family crest.
01:54Now, where's your sister?
01:55I can't abide tardiness.
01:58She really tried to hit the gym, Dad.
01:59It's great for anxiety.
02:01Ah, says the fitness school room.
02:02Ten minutes late isn't really late in the real world.
02:05Melanie, if you were still in the guest house and the job I gave you,
02:08we wouldn't be having this conversation.
02:10And I wouldn't have a life.
02:14All right, what's with this emergency anyway?
02:16I have a business to run.
02:17Something to do with these, maybe?
02:19There's one for each of us.
02:25It's an invitation.
02:27To a surprise gin tasting.
02:29I'd expect you all to be there.
02:31No excuses.
02:33No exceptions.
02:34Wait.
02:36You're opening up a new expression.
02:37Don't you think it's head of marketing?
02:38I should have known about this.
02:39Well, if you didn't tell the CFO, why would he tell you?
02:41Wait a minute, Dad.
02:42You're making a new gin?
02:43Oh, a little behind on the time, huh, sis?
02:46It happens when you bail on your whole family.
02:48Quiet!
02:51All of you.
02:52Wouldn't be a surprise if I told you all about it now, would it?
02:57And gin's just the excuse for tomorrow's gathering.
03:01I'm about to make a big announcement.
03:04Something that will affect you all.
03:08To Devereaux gin.
03:09Crying over the books again.
03:30I heard things were looking up.
03:32Yeah, the fumes from the vet get to me.
03:36The salt air.
03:39Well, let's just hope you're not sobbing when you read my next review.
03:49Hey, Jaden.
03:51Is that Simone Sawyer?
03:54What is she doing there?
03:54No idea.
03:55Okay, where the hell is that?
03:58I don't know.
03:58Okay, look.
03:59Let's just get this tasting over with and then find out what the old geezer has to proclaim.
04:04I haven't seen him in hours.
04:06Typical.
04:06Well, I guess I gotta clean things up as per usual.
04:17Uh, hello, everyone.
04:18Good evening, and welcome to Devereaux Distillery.
04:27And on behalf of my father and my siblings...
04:30Hey, don't you forget about me.
04:31Oh, and how could we forget our master distiller, Grant McGovern?
04:35As hard as we may try.
04:36But please, without further ado, this gin will not taste itself.
04:42Now grab another glass and follow me.
04:47This way into the distilling room.
04:52Okay, everyone, keep coming.
04:53Please, please, please, watch your step.
04:55Beautiful.
04:56All right, we're going all the way in the back here.
04:59What is it?
05:05Is that blood?
05:06Oh, my God.
05:13Dad!
05:34Morning, Jesse.
05:35Mark.
05:35Give me the rundown.
05:36What do we got?
05:37Okay, well, Willem Devereaux...
05:39You're welcome.
05:40Patriarch of Devereaux Distillery found dead.
05:43Family-run business.
05:44Word is he was a bit of a tyrant.
05:45Okay.
05:46And there was some kind of function?
05:47Yeah, it was a, uh, surprise tasting party for this new blend they have coming out.
05:52Most of the guests have been interviewed or released.
05:55Anyone see anything of interest?
05:56But all said that Willem was expected to make some big grand announcements regarding?
06:01Regarding?
06:02No one had any idea.
06:03He's got three grown children.
06:04They all figured it was supposed to affect them in some way.
06:07So we're holding them and the master distiller to be interviewed.
06:10Okay, great.
06:10You want to split them up after I look at the scene?
06:12Yeah, yeah.
06:13Sarah's in the distillation room doing preliminaries.
06:15Devereaux Distillery.
06:17What, do they make whiskey?
06:18Gin, exclusively.
06:19They've made an excellent product for decades.
06:21Traditional, pine forward.
06:23Yet zesty and crisp.
06:25You really know your gin?
06:26I read the back of the bottle.
06:32Sarah, walk me through it.
06:33What do you, what do you know so far?
06:35Willem forced trauma to the back of the head and, uh, shattered glass here on the floor.
06:40It appears a full bottle of gin was the weapon.
06:43Okay, so someone struck him from behind.
06:45Here.
06:47They're judging by the blood smears on the floor.
06:49He was then dragged to the vat where he was shoved in headfirst.
06:52I'll know more after the autopsy.
06:53I'll be able to confirm cause in time of death.
07:05Looks like the Devereaux's aren't the only ones with the notes for gin.
07:10What is Rex up to?
07:12I know.
07:17Jesse said that the party was for a new recipe.
07:21Send word when, uh, when you've cleared out of here.
07:23I want to see what Rex can pick up when he's got the scene to himself, okay?
07:25Okay, we'll do.
07:27Here, Rex.
07:28Let's go.
07:30I have no idea what my father was set to announce, okay?
07:33He said he wanted it to be a surprise.
07:36Was that unusual behavior for your father, Jaden?
07:39No behavior is unusual for my father.
07:42He's a self-made man, you know, trusted his gut and acted accordingly.
07:45And you, you work here at the distillery?
07:48I'm the CFO, the chief financial officer.
07:51I run the business side of things.
07:53You think your father's announcement might have been about the business?
07:56What else?
07:57That's all my father cared about was Devereaux gin.
08:01And the family.
08:02Of course.
08:05Willem was supposed to make an announcement.
08:07Did you know about this?
08:08I had no idea what was coming.
08:11I've worked for that man for 30 years.
08:14Gave up trying to understand him decades ago.
08:17Do you think he might have been retiring, selling the business?
08:21Willem?
08:22Sell?
08:23He'd rather die than give it to anyone else, including those kids of his, all right?
08:28No.
08:29Whatever he was planning to say must have had something to do with that hipster swill he was going to befoul the company name with.
08:39So, you weren't involved in developing the new recipe?
08:42Out with the old guard, I guess.
08:45Yeah.
08:46Always together in spirit.
08:49To Willem!
08:50I had no idea what my dad was planning to announce.
09:05I didn't even know there was a new gin until I got the invite.
09:09So, you don't work at the company?
09:10No, not anymore.
09:12I left a couple months ago.
09:14Started my own business.
09:15A rival gin?
09:16God forbid.
09:18All natural skin care products.
09:20Locally sourced.
09:23Why the big change?
09:25Dad just had me doing desk work.
09:27It was time to make my mark, and I hoped Island Aesthetics would do just that.
09:30You had no idea what the announcement was about.
09:38Yeah.
09:40I was hoping Dad was announcing his retirement.
09:43Handing the rings for his kids.
09:44Let us make him proud.
09:45So, you're sales and marketing here?
09:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:48Up against the large producers every day.
09:50For distribution, shelves, space, foreign markets.
09:52That must be a battle.
09:53And when I intend to win, I will do everything in my power to honor my father's legacy and keep this distillery alive.
10:03I owe it to him.
10:11Sarah said he was hit with a full bottle of gin.
10:14I guess it must have evaporated.
10:16Okay, Rex.
10:19Get the place to yourself now.
10:21Show me what we missed.
10:22I guess it must have been.
10:28No, no, no.
10:28I guess you're in trouble.
10:30Get the place for yourself.
10:30Get the place to go.
10:31I know you're a bad man.
10:32I appreciate it.
10:33I always say to myself.
10:34I'm sick of you.
10:35I'm sick of you.
10:36I don't care about this.
10:37All right, we'll get you.
10:38I'm sick of you.
10:40I'm sick of you.
10:41I'm sick of you.
10:42I'll never return to the old man.
10:43I'm sick of you.
10:45I'm sick of you.
10:47What's interesting?
10:47Well, I'm sick of you.
10:48Yeah, I'm sick of you.
10:49I'm sick of you.
10:50I'm sick of you.
10:51I'm sick of you.
10:52What is it, pal?
11:13Mark, what are you guys doing up there?
11:16Your ex picked up a scent in the distillery room.
11:18The murderer could have got gin on his shoes
11:20and then came back out here.
11:23And climbed up there?
11:27Apparently.
11:29It's somebody's suit jacket.
11:33Alan, you, uh, recognize this?
11:36No, no, no, I don't think so.
11:38Oh.
11:39You know, that's kind of strange
11:40because your, uh, your invite's in the pocket.
11:47Dad got me to fill a couple of bottles
11:49of the new expression
11:50to give to the press for review.
11:52I spilled some
11:53and didn't want to stink of gin all day.
11:56So you hid your jacket in some old barrels?
12:00You never met my father.
12:02He could freak out over the smallest thing.
12:04Is that what happened?
12:06Uh, uh...
12:06He was angry with you,
12:08so you retaliated?
12:09Are you suggesting that I drown my father
12:12in a vat of his own gin?
12:15How could I do a thing like that?
12:17Well, you lived with him.
12:19Worked for him.
12:20I mean, he's a difficult man.
12:21Could be a bit of a pressure cooker.
12:22I admired my father more than anyone.
12:26And I can't...
12:28I can't believe what happened to him.
12:32Inviting Simone Sawyer
12:34must have been some kind of curse.
12:37Uh, should I know that name?
12:40The world-renowned Spirits critic.
12:43One good review from her
12:45and they could launch a gin worldwide.
12:48No amount of advertising I buy could compare.
12:51But you're surprised that Sawyer was there.
12:54Shocked.
12:55Would be the better word.
12:59Let's just say
13:00we have history.
13:02She hated my father.
13:03Sorry to interrupt.
13:12You're a lawyer, I presume.
13:13One of many on a Devereux retainer.
13:16We'll be leaving now.
13:21Before you go, Alan,
13:22I'm, uh...
13:24I'm not buying your jacket story.
13:27If you're involved in this,
13:29you should tell us now.
13:30To the contrary, detective.
13:31This interview is over.
13:43So you think Alan knows more than he's saying?
13:45I would bet money on it.
13:47Let's keep digging.
13:49See what this announcement was about.
13:50Now, meanwhile,
13:51can you look into a Spirits critic
13:52who was at the party?
13:53Yeah.
13:54Yeah, Simone Sawyer.
13:58She left before the body was discovered.
14:00So before police arrived?
14:02Yeah, she hasn't been interviewed.
14:03Find her.
14:05Any connection to Devereux?
14:06Alan said there was bad blood.
14:10Sarah has to pass results.
14:12I'll be back.
14:17Time of death was at least an hour
14:19after he was found.
14:20Blunt force trauma was evident,
14:21but it wasn't the cause of death.
14:23So the bloat of the head didn't kill him?
14:25No, no occipital fracture,
14:26no brain bleed.
14:28Looks like Devereux did, in fact,
14:29drown in his own gin.
14:30So he was alive
14:31when someone dragged him across the floor
14:33and submerged his head in a vat.
14:35Cold.
14:36Decisive.
14:37Well, but the attack may have
14:38began with pure rage.
14:39I mean, from a profiling perspective,
14:41it is multi-layered.
14:43And I found something else of interest.
14:46Wollum was suffering
14:47from congestive heart failure.
14:49Along with the gin,
14:50there was a significant buildup
14:51of fluid in his lungs.
14:52But you're saying
14:53he didn't have much time to live?
14:54Months, a year, maybe.
14:56I'll contact his physician,
14:58see if Wollum was even aware
14:59of his prognosis.
15:00That makes you wonder
15:01who else might have known
15:02and why he would kill a man
15:03who was on his way out already.
15:14I saw the path report.
15:16The deceased didn't have long to live?
15:18Sarah's checking with Wollum's physician
15:19to see if he was aware of the fact.
15:21Oh, maybe that had something
15:22to do with his announcement.
15:23Him selling the business,
15:24passing it on to his kids,
15:26retiring.
15:27No one interview believes
15:28she'd ever give up the company.
15:29You know, maybe someone
15:29made that decision for him.
15:31Hey, I tracked that info
15:32on Simone Sawyer,
15:33the spirits critic.
15:34Turns out she has a long history
15:35of giving Devereux gin
15:36terrible reviews.
15:38She compared Grant McGovern's
15:39traditional blend
15:40to paint thinner
15:41with hints of artificial Christmas tree.
15:42Wow.
15:44So the question is,
15:45why would Devereux even bother
15:46inviting her to his gin tasting?
15:48Yeah, that's gonna be
15:49my first question.
15:50Come on, Rex.
15:57Remind me asking
15:58how you ended up at the party.
16:00I have no idea
16:01why Devereux invited me
16:02to the tasting.
16:03Or what he was going to announce.
16:05We weren't exactly close.
16:07After the terrible reviews
16:09he'd given his gin in the past?
16:11In my humble opinion,
16:13Devereux distillery
16:14has always been
16:14all talk, no gimlet.
16:16Until now, that is.
16:19Well, how's that?
16:21The new expression is excellent.
16:23Top of its class.
16:25And with my effusive review,
16:27it will take the international market
16:28by storm.
16:30You seem pretty sure of that.
16:32What makes the new gin so special?
16:34Now that
16:35is another mystery.
16:37See, all gin is just vodka
16:40with a series of botanicals added in,
16:42so citrus, herbs, spices.
16:45But it's exactly what you add
16:46that makes a good gin excellent.
16:49So, what was added?
16:52It's the million dollar question.
16:55I can't quite define
16:57the singular note
16:58at the back of the palate.
16:59It's something
16:59unusual,
17:02distinct.
17:04And distinctly unlike anything
17:06that Devereux's so-called
17:07master distiller
17:08could ever brew up.
17:09You mean Grant McGovern?
17:11You don't think that he was involved
17:12in developing a new recipe?
17:15No.
17:16According to rumor,
17:17totally shut out.
17:19So, my guess is that
17:20Willem was going to announce
17:22out with the old,
17:23in with the new.
17:24And as we both know,
17:25Grant is as old
17:26and as stale
17:27as a martini with no olive.
17:31Ah.
17:32Gotta take this.
17:37Sarah, what have you got?
17:39Yeah, Devereux's physician
17:40got back to me.
17:41She said she told Willem
17:43about his failing heart
17:44only a week ago.
17:45Did she know if he was
17:46planning to tell anyone?
17:47Yeah, his estate lawyer.
17:48Said he was making
17:49significant changes
17:50to his will.
17:52Have Jesse track that.
17:53See if Willem
17:54was going to follow through.
17:55Okay, will do.
17:56I check in on Melanie Devereux.
17:58She had a falling out
17:59with her father recently.
18:00Might have been worried
18:01she was being cut from his will.
18:02Uh, okay.
18:03Thanks, Sarah.
18:04I was told this morning
18:08by both the estate lawyer
18:09and the doctor.
18:10So, you didn't know
18:11about your father's diagnosis
18:12or his plans to change his will?
18:15My father always pledged
18:16to leave the company
18:16to all three of us.
18:18I just can't believe
18:19he reneged on that.
18:20But, uh,
18:22you seem to be searching
18:24for something
18:25in your father's office.
18:26Are you concerned
18:29he made notes
18:30on his final wishes?
18:31If he did,
18:32I would want them honored.
18:33Even if you were cut out?
18:36Melanie,
18:36are you sure you didn't know
18:37about any of this
18:38before his death?
18:38I told you I didn't.
18:40But you and your father
18:41had a recent falling out.
18:42Excuse me?
18:42Are you implying
18:45that I would harm my father
18:46before he had a chance
18:47to disinherit me?
18:48Someone killed your father.
18:50And they may have been
18:51motivated by his sudden
18:52intention to change his will.
18:53All I've ever wanted
18:54was for my father
18:55to take me seriously.
18:57Not scoff at every single
18:58one of my ideas.
18:59It was never about the money.
19:02Never.
19:07So, you think that Willem
19:08was going to announce
19:09my ouster?
19:11What?
19:12What then?
19:13I killed him?
19:14I'll be pushed aside
19:15after all these years.
19:16Could make a man snap.
19:18Do something rash.
19:19I would never stoop so low.
19:21I am a man of integrity
19:22through and through.
19:28What is up with him?
19:31Does the dog like coffee?
19:32Yeah, I'm not sure
19:33it's Java in your mug.
19:36Rex has got a nose
19:37for the new gin.
19:38Tattletale.
19:46Well, I have to admire
19:48your taste.
19:49The gin is excellent.
19:52I didn't think you were
19:53a fan of the new recipe.
19:55You know, that's
19:55until I tasted it.
19:57And now I understand
19:58why Willem was so excited.
19:59He said it was going to
20:00change everything.
20:01When did he say all this?
20:02A couple of weeks ago
20:03when all the secrecy began.
20:05You know, he wouldn't even
20:05tell me what was in it.
20:08It's nothing I'd ever used
20:09before.
20:10Singular.
20:11Some kind of unique botanical.
20:15Simone Sawyer said the same thing.
20:18She's going to give the new
20:19gin a glowing review.
20:21Well, now it all makes some sense.
20:23What's that?
20:24Well, I did not understand
20:25why Willem had invited her
20:27to the tasting.
20:28Even gave her a bottle
20:29in advance.
20:30You wonder why he would
20:31risk another bad review.
20:33But if the gin is excellent,
20:34where's the risk?
20:35You don't understand
20:36how critics like
20:37Simulton work.
20:39Only bad reviews
20:40are free.
20:43And good ones?
20:44Yeah, well.
20:46I think my old pal Willem
20:48lowered his standards
20:49and, uh,
20:52got out the grease, huh?
20:59So Melanie claims
21:01to have known nothing
21:01about her father's intention
21:02to change his will?
21:04She denies that she feared
21:05he was going to make
21:05an announcement
21:06she was being cut out.
21:07Like her brother Alan,
21:08we have no concrete evidence
21:09linking her to the crime.
21:11Maybe Jesse's got something
21:12for us.
21:13Apparently,
21:13Simone Sawyer
21:14was on the take.
21:15Yeah, so,
21:17I've been combing
21:17through security footage
21:18of both the estate
21:19and the distillery
21:20and I found this.
21:21So here's Simone
21:23leaving the Devereaux house
21:24the day of the tasting party.
21:26Bottle of the new gin
21:27in one hand,
21:28but what's in her other hand?
21:30An envelope?
21:32Could be the invite?
21:33Could be cold hard cash.
21:35Grant was surprised
21:36that Willem
21:36would break his principles
21:37and came to the old payola.
21:39Could be interesting
21:40to find out
21:41if and why he did.
21:42Yeah, my thoughts
21:43exactly.
21:47Come on, Rex.
21:49Let's go.
21:57503.
22:05Old.
22:05S.J.P.D.
22:09Simone?
22:18Simone?
22:19Simone?
22:19I'm both full of cash
22:33still here.
22:34Oh, no, Simone.
22:59All right, she's alive, Rex, but she needs help.
23:01Go!
23:04Doctor's think Simone was poisoned, and they're not sure when she'll wake up.
23:21The lab is doing a workup of the Devereux gin found at the scene.
23:24They're looking for known toxins.
23:25Okay, well, judging from the label, it looks like the same bottle Simone left the Devereux mansion with.
23:30She'd already sampled a gin when we met.
23:32She talked about a unique botanical.
23:34Well, so it couldn't have been poisoned, then.
23:36Plus, there's this hotel surveillance footage of the hallway outside of Simone's room.
23:41Okay, here she is leaving her hotel room earlier that day.
23:44To meet up with me and check the timestamp.
23:47Okay, and then...
23:49Oh, someone's covering their tracks.
23:51To break into her room and poison the open bottle.
23:55Any prints?
23:55Only Simone's.
23:56Only Simone's on the bottle in the envelope of money.
23:59Well, hotel management is asking all their staff to check their key cards.
24:02One may have been stolen.
24:03What's the common threat?
24:04What motivated both attacks?
24:06Well, everything leads back to the announcement, right?
24:08What Willem was gonna say.
24:10We may have to go back further than that.
24:13Willem told Grant that a new ingredient in the gin changed everything.
24:16Yeah, but nobody seems to know what it is.
24:18Could that be what the announcement was about?
24:20Well, it can't hurt to find out.
24:22The lab could isolate it, but, I mean, it would take weeks.
24:26Well, no offense to your department, but there is a quicker way.
24:29Let's put Rex to the test.
24:30You actually found a dog-sized bar.
24:40It's technically a media consult, destined for the police auction, but, you know, I couldn't resist.
24:46Okay, so the goal is to make sure that Rex can distinguish the different blends.
24:51Well, it looks straightforward.
24:52So, uh, each glass contains a different gin.
24:54Yes, and only one contains the new Deborah expression.
24:57So, telling it from the rest means that Rex can pick out the one secret ingredient.
25:02Exactly.
25:04And here, I'm gonna...
25:06I'm gonna let you sniff it right from the bottle.
25:09Got that?
25:11Okay, Rex.
25:12Time to put your nose to the test.
25:27Did he get it?
25:39Is he...
25:39Is he right?
25:45100%.
25:46Wow.
25:47Good boy.
25:48Yeah, Rex can definitely isolate the secret ingredient.
25:53If you could just tell us what it is, that'd be great.
25:56Well, I guess we're going on a hunt.
25:59Call me if you and Jesse dig up anything new.
26:01Okay.
26:02He's not going to damage anything.
26:17He's a highly trained officer of the law.
26:29What is he looking for?
26:30Well, that is exactly what we're here to find out.
26:38He's on to something.
26:39He's picked up the set of the secret ingredient.
26:46What's in there?
26:48Equipment.
26:49Ingredients.
26:50Things that I barely use.
26:52But that I would rather not have broken.
26:54What do you got there?
27:04The secret ingredient is...
27:07Some kind of weeds.
27:12But...
27:13What kind?
27:14I've no idea.
27:18I've never seen this botanical before in my life.
27:30Appreciate it.
27:32Hey, hey, hey.
27:32Have you heard from Mark?
27:33Yeah.
27:34He thinks Rex may have identified the secret ingredient in the gin.
27:37I'm headed to the lab to prepare to analyze it.
27:39I thought pinpointing the ingredient took weeks.
27:41Well, having a botanical in hand and identifying it is way faster than trying to identify one
27:46unknown essential oil mixed with others in a bottle of gin.
27:49I'll take your word for it.
27:50Oh, by the way, I have been doing a deep dive into the history of artisan gin.
27:53Did you know that juniper-flavored spirits date back to the Middle Ages?
27:57I did not.
27:58Yeah, monks and alchemists, they experimented with it for medicinal purposes.
28:01And that eventually led to the gin craze of the early 17th century and led to the readily
28:06available spirit being nicknamed Mother's Ruin, which was very popular amongst the female
28:10population.
28:11But now we are in a brand new gin craze, okay?
28:15And these artisan companies, they have grown tenfold over the last ten years.
28:20And the idea is to build this brand and sell it to these big conglomerates, you know, lock
28:24stock and two smoking gin barrels.
28:26It doesn't sound like that was Willem's idea.
28:29He wanted to keep the family business up and running.
28:31Maybe that's what got him killed.
28:33I still haven't found a connection between Willem and Simone, but I'll keep digging.
28:36Okay, sounds good.
28:38Just try not to get too deep in the juniper weeds.
28:42I could get lost in there.
28:46Its scientific name is Rhododendron grinlandicum.
28:49It's from a plant commonly known as Labrador tea.
28:52So it grows locally?
28:53All across the island and the big land.
28:55First Nations people discovered it.
28:57Used it as tea and then it was later adopted by European colonists.
29:00Okay, now it's somehow become the secret ingredient in Devereux gin.
29:03But it can also be toxic if consumed in high concentrations.
29:08Toxic enough to leave someone fighting for their life?
29:10Like Simone Sawyer.
29:12I'll alert the hospital of the possibility.
29:15And our own lab is still working on identifying the toxin in Simone's bottle of gin.
29:18Meanwhile, let's see who knows about Willem's secret ingredient.
29:29Hold on.
29:29Someone tried to kill Simone Sawyer with some dried up weeds?
29:32Well, that's not confirmed.
29:33But the new ingredient in your father's gin is Labrador tea.
29:37And there's little doubt the two crimes are connected.
29:39Dad, you must have known about this.
29:42Yeah, yeah, you were always pressuring Dad to put out a new artist's gin.
29:45Who are we?
29:46Marketing gold.
29:47Yeah.
29:47Excuse me for wanting to follow trends.
29:49You would have sold out years ago if Dad let you.
29:51What do you mean?
29:51First of all, you need to stop with all that.
29:52Hey, man, not right now.
29:54Sorry I'm late.
29:55It was a crush at the gym.
29:56Whoa, excuse me.
30:06Does your dog think I have treats or something?
30:08I doubt that's what Rex is looking for.
30:10Do you mind, Leti, take a look in your purse?
30:13Yeah, I mean, he already is.
30:17Rex?
30:23Island Aesthetics Hand Cream.
30:26Made with Labrador tea.
30:36I'm sorry.
30:37You're saying you found it in Grant McGovern's lab?
30:41Rex did.
30:44And we've confirmed that the secret ingredient in your father's new gin is Labrador tea.
30:52I can't believe it.
30:54Was that your idea, Ellen?
30:56I mean, it seems like a huge coincidence otherwise, since you're using the botanical, too.
31:04Dad always scoffed at my ideas.
31:05That's why I left the company.
31:09Did you find out that your father has stolen your idea?
31:13That he was changing his will and might cut you out?
31:16Look, I had nothing to do with any of this.
31:17You have to believe me.
31:18I don't care if Dad stole my idea.
31:21I was gonna take credit for it.
31:23I mean, I just can't believe he finally heard me, you know?
31:26Like, saw what I was capable of.
31:30That there was more in me than he ever acknowledged.
31:38Knowing that means everything to me.
31:39Do you think she's telling the truth?
31:49Or she's a great liar.
31:51Yeah, well, we met a lot of those.
31:53She had motive.
31:54She had opportunity.
31:56Yeah, but the link between her and Simone is tenuous at best.
31:59We need something stronger.
32:00Someone linked to both attacks.
32:02Hey, guys.
32:04Guess what I found out on a Japanese spirits forum?
32:06Jesse's been digging up info on Devereux Distillery.
32:09He's been digging hard by the looks of it.
32:11Arigato auto-translated.
32:12What did you learn?
32:14Okay, so there's rumors that a big Japanese mega-distillery
32:17is interested in buying them out.
32:19What, Willem was thinking of selling?
32:20Everyone we interviewed was adamant that Willem would never sell.
32:23But there's no evidence that he even knew about the rumor deal.
32:25So someone other than Willem was managing the sale?
32:28Any idea who?
32:29Well, I checked the travel records of our key suspects
32:31and guess who flew to Tokyo three times in the past year.
32:37Jaden Devereux.
32:39CFO and eldest son.
32:41Guess who was in the seat beside him.
32:44Simone Sawyer.
32:46Well, maybe that's why she was going to give the new gents such a good review.
32:49They're in a deal together.
32:50Right.
32:50She promotes, he sells, and they both make a killing.
32:53And none of it works with Willem in the way.
32:54Yeah, and with him gone, why keep Simone around?
32:56Right.
32:57A CFO, it's his job to limit liability.
32:59Especially if she's asking for more money to keep her silence.
33:02Yeah, but it's all still conjecture.
33:03I mean, we've got nothing we can charge Jaden with.
33:07Sarah's got something.
33:08Hey, I just got the tox cream results from the gin found in Simone Sawyer's room.
33:19Labrador tea?
33:20Not even close.
33:21Tetrazole.
33:23It's almost tasteless, lethal, if ingested in sufficient doses,
33:26and it's a key ingredient in eye drops.
33:30Jaden Devereux.
33:31But so do millions of other people.
33:34I mean, he could just claim that he was being framed.
33:36Yeah.
33:37Yeah, there's a story there I can't quite read.
33:41I mean, last time Rex's nose got us out of a dead end.
33:45Maybe he can again.
33:47There's one scent that he hasn't tracked down.
33:50None of us saw it, but it was in plain sight.
33:52Okay, ready?
33:57Rock, paper, scissors.
34:00You always pick rock.
34:01I should know this.
34:04Jesse, bring up that shot of the hotel surveillance camera being painted out.
34:10I don't get it, Mark.
34:11How is Rex's nose going to help us with this?
34:13All spray paint is basically the same chemical makeup, right?
34:16Yeah, the most commonly used are alkyds and acrylics,
34:18and it's an easy test to find out which one.
34:20And you've got a sample of the dry paint.
34:22Of course.
34:23Hold on.
34:24How is any of this useful?
34:26My money is on Jaden for both these crimes.
34:28Now let's sniff out the truth and prove it.
34:41Okay, buddy, let's give this a shot.
34:50Go easy.
34:52This stuff is powerful.
34:54Got it?
34:55Go track it.
34:56Excuse me.
34:58If you have any more questions, you should contact our lawyers.
35:01Yeah, Rex and I just want to do a quick sweep of the house.
35:04Then you can get a warrant.
35:05What do you want?
35:06Get back in the house, Alan.
35:08I thought you might be interested in finding your father's killer.
35:11Of course we're interested, but there is a limit.
35:14You can't just...
35:15It doesn't have to come to this, okay?
35:17Let me talk, though.
35:18Oh, no.
35:23Is that Jaden's car?
35:25No, it's mine.
35:28You sure about this alert, Rex?
35:30Black spray paint.
35:47Okay.
35:48I've never seen that before.
35:51Is this what you use to cover the surveillance lens before you poison Simone?
35:54No, no.
35:55I have nothing to do with Simone.
35:56And what happened when my father was an accident, all right?
35:59An accident?
35:59Ow.
36:01Listen, Mel.
36:01I can't have you taking any blame for this.
36:07I'm responsible for my father's death.
36:10Mind if I have a drink?
36:19Hearing all this in the course of an hour, I think I'll need it.
36:24Alan told you what happened?
36:26Because he questioned me.
36:27Look, I need to set things right.
36:31Melanie had nothing to do with any of this.
36:33Explain how your father's death was an accident.
36:37That afternoon, before going to the tasting, I stumbled on my father's notes for his announcement.
36:44I was here.
36:45I was here.
36:48At the family home.
36:52In my dad's office.
36:53He talked about the exceptional new jinn.
37:01How he changed his mind about so many new things.
37:05I'd given my whole life to my father and a company.
37:09But he was changing his will.
37:11He was cutting you out and leaving everything to Melanie.
37:16I tried harder than anyone to please him while every day he put me down.
37:20Yeah, he must have been very angry.
37:21So I confronted him.
37:23And he says such awful things.
37:27Why?
37:28What can I do?
37:29Stop bellyaching.
37:31You've whined since you were a little boy.
37:34Pushing me.
37:35Just pushing me.
37:38Why don't you show some Devereaux spirit and do something for a change?
37:42I just snapped.
37:51It was over in a second.
37:53Just lost control.
37:54So you admit you struck him on purpose?
37:56Yes.
37:57But I swear he was alive and on the floor when I left.
38:02They didn't call for help?
38:04I know it was wrong, but I was terrified.
38:07I just hid the gin-soaked jacket and went back to the party.
38:09I never dreamed he'd get up and stumble into a vat of gin.
38:14That's what you assumed happened.
38:16How else did he get there?
38:19Then we all went into the vat room for the tasting and saw him like that.
38:22I was so shocked.
38:24You have to believe me.
38:28I didn't mean for Dad to die.
38:32But it was all my fault.
38:37I'm not sure it is, Alan.
38:39Not entirely your fault.
38:42And what do you mean, Detective?
38:43How could it not be?
38:44Well, because we didn't share all the forensic evidence with the family.
38:48We know that your father was dragged to the vat that he drowned in.
38:53Dragged?
38:54By who?
38:56So I was convinced it was Jade.
38:58But that changed when Melanie told me you confessed to her just an hour ago.
39:03What's wrong with that?
39:04It's the truth.
39:05Yeah, but, um, I mean, I assume that, uh, Jaden doesn't know about any of this.
39:12No, he's not even home.
39:14So only the person who really poisoned Simone would have the spray paint.
39:17And that same person got the idea to pin both crimes on you once you confessed to killing your father.
39:24Okay, this is insane.
39:25Melanie?
39:26It's ironic.
39:27You had no idea your father was thrilled with your suggestion for the new djinn when you found him unconscious on the vat room floor, did you?
39:36That he was planning to leave everything to you.
39:40Or that he didn't have long to live.
39:43You just saw an opportunity and took it, thinking he was gonna cut you out.
39:47Did you find out about Jaden and Simone's deal-making after the murder?
39:54Used the eye drops to point to Jaden so we'd start looking at him for your father's murder, too?
39:59These accusations are insane, and you can't prove any of it.
40:03I know, but, uh, Rex can.
40:07Do you mind if he smells your hands?
40:10Whoever put the spray paint in Alan's car did it in the last hour.
40:14Hey, I'm home.
40:15Ellie!
40:37Stay away from me, you stupid mutt!
40:40I'll put it under your feet.
40:41You are under arrest for murder and attempted murder.
40:47I never tried to kill Simone.
40:48She was just supposed to get sick and point the finger at Jaden.
40:51Oh, I'm sure she'll appreciate that.
40:52As will your brother.
40:54I was sure it was Jaden who left Dad like that in the vat room.
40:57And that made it okay to drown your own father?
40:59He tore me down my whole life.
41:01I thought he was gonna humiliate me in front of everyone.
41:04Make fun of me for trying to break away.
41:06Give it up, Melanie.
41:07You're done.
41:08And Rex is no mud.
41:12He's my partner.
41:16Let's go, pal.
41:17Hey, it's a great job, team.
41:40Alan and Melanie are in custody, although they're both laureate up to the hill.
41:44And I hear Simone's recovering, but she woke up thinking it was Jaden who poisoned her?
41:49I think that was Melanie's plan.
41:51After finding out about the Japanese deal, she saw a way of pointing suspicion toward Jaden.
41:56Uh-huh.
41:56Poisoning Simone with the eye drops made him look like the prime suspect for his father's murder, too.
42:01Then Alan threw a wrench in it by announcing that he was gonna confess,
42:04and Melanie put the spray paint in his trunk.
42:06They're framing for both.
42:08Oh, what a family.
42:09You know, I'm just glad that mine enjoys watching the game and having a slice of pizza.
42:12At least Jaden's had a change of heart.
42:15He's backing out of the Japanese offer, keeping Grant on his master distiller,
42:19and renaming the new expression Willem's Blend.
42:23That's nice.
42:25Well, let's have a taste.
42:27This one's gotta be to Rex.
42:29Yeah.
42:30He has the best nose of all of us.
42:32Ooh.
42:33Two Rex.
42:33Two Rex.
42:34Two Rex.
42:37Mmm.
42:38Mmm.
42:39Good boy.
42:39Oh, wow.
42:40That is something.
42:41Mmm.
42:42What do you think, Rex?
42:43What do you think, Rex?
42:46Oh.
42:47Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
42:50Oh, yeah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
43:20Oh, yeah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
43:50Oh, yeah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
