00:00Matthewsons auction more than 700 classic cars, bikes and trucks every month.
00:10Beautiful bit of kit. What a rarity. Absolute heaven.
00:15At their garages in New Yorkshire, our television crews have been trying to understand their business.
00:21You'll get the hang of it soon. You've only been around us for five years.
00:24From what I can see, they've learned very little.
00:26But that hasn't stopped us taking a risk on classics close to our hearts.
00:31Oh, it's an Escort!
00:33It is a 1942 WLA.
00:36You have no suspension, you have no brakes, you have no steering.
00:40In one word, knackered.
00:43We've made it worse.
00:45So far, the experts have done us proud.
00:48It's come out very, very nice, hasn't it?
00:50It's very good. This is the best one that I've seen.
00:54Absolutely brilliant.
00:56But it's a nightmare, balancing the books, when we come to sell them again.
01:00We've spent just over £40,000.
01:03Dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
01:05£22,000.
01:07You're saving another vehicle. You're performing a public service, really.
01:10It's the only way you can look at it.
01:11But the worst thing you can do is think that you're going to make any money out of it.
01:15Whoa!
01:17Man.
01:26This week, we take on one of Derek's favourite Dameless.
01:30I love this car. If I was going to London this afternoon, I'd go in this.
01:34Oh!
01:35Yeah.
01:36It's a V12.
01:37But unfortunately, it's also V-broken.
01:41A bit like our restoring mark.
01:44Sounds like your lungs.
01:46Oil coming out the engine.
01:51Plus, a 60s triumph that didn't just keep up with the Joneses, it overtook them.
01:58Great six-cylinder engine. They were like the executive saloon in the day.
02:03If you had one, you'd probably done very well for yourself.
02:06Looks quite nice at first glance, doesn't it?
02:09That's what we thought too.
02:15For anyone based in North Yorkshire, and lucky enough to own a classic motor,
02:20there's no end of beautiful locations, just a short drive away.
02:24But in the unlikely event of needing to travel outside this glorious county,
02:29it might be best attempted in a vehicle that would ease the journey.
02:34But out of all these cars, what would be the best restoration project
02:38that would go the distance?
02:40My pick for a very relaxing, comfortable trip would be the Rolls.
02:47They are such a lovely, magic carpet ride. That's why.
02:53Paul has a different approach.
02:56Just for the fun factor, if I was going to do a 100-mile road trip, it'd be that.
03:01A 205 GTI.
03:03You're telling me you'd want to sit and do 100-mile in that?
03:06Yeah, yeah.
03:08But Derek is less forthcoming.
03:10Always reluctant to suggest and say to people, you will bite that.
03:15It sort of comes back and bites your bum.
03:17However, for us, he's happy to make an exception.
03:21His choice, this Daimler Double Six.
03:28In 1960, Jaguar bought Daimler, and eight years later, Jag launched the XJ,
03:33available with a 12-cylinder engine, which became Daimler's Double Six.
03:38The two brands were independent, but apparently Daimler nabbed the best-built cars off the production line.
03:45About 10% of them.
03:47The Double Six was loaded with every extra Coventry could muster.
03:51It had an electric sunroof, and even a new-fangled trip computer.
03:56It was like sitting in a high-speed gentleman's club.
04:03There were some downsides, though.
04:05A new one in 1980 cost seven times more than a Mini Metro.
04:09And if you managed to squeeze out 10 miles to the gallon, you were doing well.
04:18This one is a 1983 automatic, with the slightly less thirsty HE V12 engine.
04:24I love this car. This Double Six engine is unbreakable.
04:28It's absolutely fantastic.
04:30I love the colour.
04:31The only downside is this.
04:33They all pick up round the windows, because when they built on new,
04:37they didn't seal them up enough.
04:39It's as simple as that.
04:40But this car in general is gorgeous.
04:4262,000 miles on it, which will be right.
04:45You can tell by the interior and the smell of it.
04:50The general...
04:51Absolutely gorgeous to drive.
04:55If I was going to London this afternoon, and there was a Rolls-Royce sat there, or this, I'd go in this.
05:01With such a suave motor, even we felt obliged to dress appropriately.
05:06Daimler, Double Six HE.
05:08It's a lovely car.
05:10Automatic.
05:11So there you are.
05:12£5,000 away.
05:13Thank you at £5,000.
05:15£6,000 here with me at £6,000.
05:17£6,000.
05:18£6,000.
05:19£6,000.
05:20£6,000.
05:21£6,000.
05:22£6,000.
05:23£6,000.
05:24£6,000.
05:25£6,000.
05:26£6,000.
05:27£6,000.
05:28£6,000.
05:29£6,000.
05:30£6,000.
05:31£6,000.
05:32£6,000.
05:33£6,000 there.
05:34£6,000.
05:35£6,000.
05:36£6,000.
05:37£6,000.
05:38£6,000.
05:39£6,600.
05:40£6,600.
05:41£6,600.
05:42£6,600.
05:42£6,600, thank you for trying.
05:44Provisiony, then at £6,600, to the bangers and cash team, £6,600.
05:48£6,600.
05:49£6,600.
05:52Pro-visional, then.
05:53Good.
05:54There you go.
05:56After a chat with the owner, we agreed on £6,800.
05:59A posh car like this needs a firm of restorative for diverting.
06:01of restorers distinguished enough to match it this however was tricky to find but our oily mates
06:07Johnny and Mark just outside York were available they've saved several cars for us are you happy
06:14with the angle of this one I couldn't care less Mark when I'm sat in here my head's about here
06:18anyway and the last one we gave them was an absolute nightmare this car is the worst restoration
06:25I've seen why is it always cold when I come here you pick the wrong time you're like a dark cloud
06:32John when you come here it's pleasant yeah it's pleasant when you're not here then you arrive
06:38can you see that above his head hmm Johnny's just had five weeks in Las Vegas but Mark
06:44as some sort of Yorkshire lurgy you're suffering aren't you I am suffering every day down here
06:51yeah but things are about to improve oh yeah oh yes oh my god it's a V12 it is both of our dads
07:05have had Daimler double sixes oh this means a lot to us you know my dad had a Daimler double six
07:13coupe and what did your it was a saloon I think about an enrage and here he is
07:20a young Mark Juggins sometime in the 80s before he figured out how to weld
07:25elements of like the Sweeney and stuff like that isn't it look at the colour of it minor minor details
07:34Mark has done 62,000 miles this is really cool isn't it you know that don't you
07:41whether we'll think that in a few weeks is another matter
07:46it's quiet isn't it this two-ton lump of luxury currently has a cooling system fault
07:52so we've avoided trying to start it go on how's that actually does look in very good condition we
08:03have a little issue there I think windscreen really wants help doesn't it yeah look at that
08:10this is exciting but this is a 5.3 V12 fuel injected hey should we go up in the air with it Max wants
08:19to go up in the air this is a big car so there's a lot of metal underneath to go rusty oil coming out
08:32the engine it's kind of wet everywhere yeah it's actually a good thing because it stopped the car
08:37going rusty this is in remarkably good condition isn't it doesn't look like it's going to need a
08:43lot but it's how far we go with the paintwork the other slightly pressing issue is the radiator
08:49there's definitely something wrong with it oh god drippy drips already what we're going to do we're
08:58just going to pressurize the water system was a simple air pump you pump it up puts pressure in
09:02it ideally what we want to see some water going up from where well some somewhere cheap so Matt will
09:09pressurize that and then I think that's fairly self-explanatory there isn't it can I use this on my
09:17lungs it does it sounds like your lungs Matt sounds just like your lungs I think that'll do just like
09:25Mark the radiator is very broken also expensive and difficult to find a replacement plus we have
09:33some small issues that could turn into big ones for the time being though we remain positive
09:47back at Johnny's garage our 1983 Daimler double six does have a number of problems we do have an oil
10:01leak there don't we but the good news is Mark has stopped coughing I am feeling a lot better than when
10:07it arrived I could hardly talk a lot of people probably quite happy about that externally look
10:15pretty good there's a couple of scabs there's a 50-50 chance you might have the odd hole but
10:20fortunately it's looking pretty good underneath what we're going to do today is we're going to take
10:25the radiator out first thing to do is take the bonnet off because not a lot of room there is there I think
10:30there's just the two wires for the headlights isn't there yeah would you like a photo of those Johnny
10:35are you saying that they won't go back on the same way Mark there's a distinct possibility
10:39two wires how wrong can it go ready okay onto there all good perfect I'm calling that a day then are
10:49you I think so our work here is done helping out in the workshop today is apprentice Thea I think it's a
10:58beautiful car I love it you can kind of see why people like cars like this this will be so businessmen
11:06bank managers train robbers so what credentials of the car made it suited for getaways not the fuel
11:14economy because you would get away and you'd have to stop at a petrol station within about kind of 10
11:19miles but got big boots you know to put like your loot you know bodies that has been a few bodies in
11:24the back of boots like this so yeah a good all-round car the current plan is to somehow source a new
11:32radiator there's a lot of bolts there isn't there there is a lot of bolts if one is even available
11:38it's likely to be expensive but Johnny seems to be rethinking you know this might repair mine it
11:45looking at that it's not actually leaking out of the car it's leaking on this edge here
11:49engines produce heat and will be badly damaged if they weren't cooled normally by a radiator our leak
12:01is where a central core joins to one of two tanks as the temperature rises a thermostat opens and the
12:09belt driven water pump starts circulating coolant from the engine into the inlet tank of the radiator
12:15from here it gets forced around the copper fins of the core because they're tightly packed in layers
12:23the surface area is huge which increases the amount of heat dissipated when air flows over them now
12:31hopefully a lot cooler the liquid empties into the outlet tank before going back to the engine and on
12:38this car also the gearbox is that the brand new one we just bought yeah it doubles up as maize garage
12:49toilet that's that's the toilet yeah with too cold to go outside yeah yeah you see someone's drawn the
12:57short straw haven't they loosen that off now that should lift out a viscous fan they call that so the
13:05engine turns the water pump and it doesn't turn this as fast and as it warms up this grabs a bit more
13:10and cools a bit more kind of simple idea till the break and then just make loads of noise
13:15you're gonna get that on your head see oh well yeah oh well oh well
13:25that it hasn't gone it hasn't got a plan but it's gone exactly how it always does
13:29oh with the radiator finally out it can now be sent off for inspection and possible refurb
13:37we definitely prefer this option to sourcing a replacement online we did a quick search and the
13:44first thing we found it was 975 pounds you don't want to overpay on certain things do you it's in the
13:50uk it's not going anywhere excessively warm is it could probably run it without the radiator could do
13:55today today you could yeah
14:04series one daimler double sixes were around in the 1970s and cost more than the average house
14:11but 50 years ago how would one of impressed one's neighbors on a budget well derek has a suggestion
14:19for our second project triumph 2000 mark one this two liter engine absolutely lovely we all know it's
14:27been painted the interior is so original it's got power steering it's manual which is nice got an issue
14:35there i'm led to believe it's coming with an excessively high reserve nine to ten i think no nothing
14:42like five to six would be absolutely ideal something on that sort of line and i think it can be improved
14:48upon but that's no problem that can be done very easily we really like the triumph too so we'll
14:54follow derek's advice and pile in 1969 triumph 2000 now once buying this car g reg as you can see
15:03so it's got to start low dead straight motor spells nice inside whereabouts then start me on it five five
15:09five five two five four five six five thousand six hundred five thousand six this is about right
15:16six five thousand six five thousand six hundred pound five eight five thousand eight hundred selling
15:22provisionally five thousand eight hundred are you all done five thousand eight hundred for the first
15:26second third and last time 58 provisional good
15:30given that our bid was more than three grand below the asking price we did have to go to
15:37six five hundred but still not bad as for who's doing the work we've decided to send
15:44the car to tim willis in darlington triumphs are in his blood my dad always loved classic cars i've
15:50got some fond memories of being in a little spitfire when i was a kid tim's maintained and
15:57restored classics for nearly 25 years but triumphs have always been the mainstay of his business
16:04a good one you take it down the road and you come back with a big smile on your face
16:08and other classic cars you can't always say that of but how much will he be smiling after he's given
16:15hours the once over that's a nice looking car isn't it which is a lovely color
16:21all triumphs had this really nice sort of wood veneer dashboard and you know this has got leather
16:28tops to the seats which is really nice although they do need bringing back to life somehow
16:35tim likes an early test drive i can hear the engine quite clearly there's something missing
16:41squeaky steering but it's pulling okay but then more of whatever was missing went missing
16:55it's over there broke down it didn't want to go backwards and it stopped and it's clearly not
17:01charging a quick jump start and we were off back to the workshop and on to the dreaded lift
17:07as always we've got everything crossed for a clean bill of health underneath
17:15it's had brakes done looks like it's maybe had a replacement steering rack stainless steel exhaust
17:21and it all seems to be covered in some kind of a coating it's not paint but it's a good sign
17:28we've got a nice oil leak there from the differential but there's no serious corrosion to speak of down this
17:35end uh okay we've got a bit so we didn't quite escape but that's a small hole it's quite a nice car
17:42isn't it so we've done good i think you've done good yeah yeah i think you've done all right
17:54back near york mark's got a few moments spare to investigate some of the high-end features
17:59our 1983 daimler has to offer it's of an era where gadgets were kind of coming into cars they were
18:07getting a little bit more luxurious back in the day obviously i'd have been in this as a kind of 10
18:14year old so you would have had your chauffeur in the in the front but it would have been your dad
18:19and as a child obviously you can light your own cigarettes as well you've got your own little heat
18:24events and things like that they are such big fuel guzzlers it actually runs on two tanks and when one
18:31runs out you press the button and it switches over to the other tank also on the dash an example of 40
18:38year old cutting edge technology we've actually got a computer haven't we it measures distance traveled
18:44average speed and terrifyingly fuel consumption that little device will make interesting reading won't
18:51it between petrol station visits it was used 0.6 of a gallon that's probably just starting it up to roll
18:57into the workshop as for the next accessory mark has to check it's working but he'd rather just forget
19:04about it it's got an electric sunroof on it however we've had one on a newer garden this kind of all fall
19:11apart it might just go effortlessly like clockwork or you might get grinding twanging and also tearing the
19:19paint off if it gets stuck halfway as well let's just crack on
19:33it's the first time i think we've had anything that's gone that way it has gone exceptionally
19:36well hasn't it and the good news doesn't end there johnny's basically he's taken out the bottom rubber
19:42on this and it's exposed a bit of that it's been covered up in the past with touch-up paint it's not
19:47not a pretty repair it is probably a repair that's that's stopped it getting considerably worse
19:54at the moment still fairly sound i thought the first poke with a screwdriver could have gone
19:59straight through that so yeah relatively happy
20:17on the edge of the moors it's going well with our daimler double six apart from the large gap under
20:25the bonnet after mark removed the dilapidated radiator unlike a modern car it's cheaper to have
20:31a specialist fix it than to source a new one the only one that we found was over 900 pounds and that's
20:39something you don't really want to be spending so we will take it in hope for the best really
20:45this requires a trip to scarborough on yorkshire's dramatic east coast
20:52and thanks to neil kirby an opportunity to see a bit of traditional craftsmanship
20:57that often gets overlooked we repair mostly classic cars generator radiators industrial radiators stuff
21:05that you can't get off the shell with a classic radiator salt air affects them especially in the
21:11seaside area like this they rot away the copper putting the fins are very thin tanks are usually
21:18brass over time they go porous so they have to be repaired
21:24the car looks in reasonable condition it's a bit clogged up here with debris from the roads and such
21:31like we look like we might have a leak along there it looks like a lime scale or anti-freeze residue
21:42neil has spent most of his working life restoring these vital pieces of equipment
21:48i took this job 43 years ago nearly now me and my ex-business partner set up on our own in 1991
21:56after having four or five staff because of the change in the business we can't compete with the
22:00prices that you can get on the internet i'm back to just doing it here on my own we're a dying breed now
22:08to confirm it's good enough to repair neil needs to do some tests we're going to fill it up with water
22:14if it's blocked up when we tip it on its end it will flow very slowly from the bottom if the water's not
22:20going through the radiator quick enough it's going to cause overheating and possibly back pressure
22:25this is a new radiator off a tractor and is how it should look
22:35and this is ours actually doesn't look brilliant to be fair
22:41it also fails the fill it with air and see if it bubbles out test
22:44so probably more than i thought to be honest there
22:54under normal circumstances we would try and just re-solar them seams but i think because of the
22:58flow test we did earlier it needs a core
23:01the prep for this even on a chilly february morning is pretty hot work
23:10just taking the solder out of the joints of the radiator so we can get this tank away
23:15a few days later the new core arrived the original tanks were then reattached
23:34and with neil using a tin alloy solder the joints were sealed
23:38all good again for years of happy cooling
23:49back in darlington tim is about to start work on our surprisingly rust free triumph 2000
23:57first up the engine so we're going to do a compression test because while we were out on road
24:03test as it warmed up it started to feel a little bit unhappy with itself so we'll just pop these off
24:10the nasty old bug leads we'll just get rid of those to one side
24:16and take the plugs out it's nice to see they haven't been fitted by a gorilla
24:23the point of this test is to see if there's a tight seal between the six cylinders
24:27and pistons combustion engines rely on a change in pressure to suck the air and fuel in and push the
24:34exhaust out we're looking for a minimum 120 psi below 100 it's dead
24:48165 super duper the others were good too 160 on that one 170
24:58so the solution turns out to be a bit of basic maintenance tuning
25:03so almost certainly carburettors ignition a combination of the two and it'll be lovely
25:08this is all good because it allowed us to just concentrate on improving the engine
25:14first tim reduced the chances of any further roadside embarrassment
25:19we had a breakdown because no charging so new battery new alternator and some wiring issues which
25:25were actually i think the main route of the problem then we addressed an issue that keeps classic
25:30owners awake at night it may be worth considering doing an unleaded conversion on it just to give the
25:39next owner confidence in knowing that he can drive it anywhere and he doesn't need to worry about a thing
25:44cars like our triumph made before 1989 relied on the lead in petrol to lubricate the exhaust and inlet valves
25:55no lead can result in the valve seats wearing causing the valves to stick
26:01the conversion involves replacing the valve seats on the cylinder head with stronger metal
26:05the other problem is that unleaded fuel contains ethanol it makes for cleaner engines but it can
26:13damage old rubber pipes so we'll be addressing both of these issues
26:17our cylinder head which has been running with unleaded fuel there we go will be sent off to a specialist
26:29and it looks like the same can be said for the seats tim has reached a verdict
26:35i'm always loath to get rid of old sort of patinated leather but i think this has just gone too far
26:40the base comes out very easily we'll take all the leather bits to a nice friendly trimmer who can
26:48hopefully make it look like new again this is a clean car but in the past removing interiors has
26:56allowed tim to unearth some rare artifacts rotting fruit sweets congealed into the carpets
27:05uh moths maggots you name it there's all kinds of stuff these were when car seats with chairs yeah
27:17going somewhere was an event and if the car was marketed as being comfortable and a sort of
27:22executive saloon or luxury saloon that's exactly what you got really if we can turn that interior
27:28into a beautiful interior that's going to be super isn't it
27:31with all that removed tim can now concentrate on the stuff that needs doing underneath we're going
27:41to take the differential the cross member and the rear subframe out and then we can deal with the oil
27:48leak from the differential this is the box of cogs on the rear axle that provides power to the wheels
27:55but also allows them to rotate independently when you go around the corner
28:01getting all these components off makes another job easier you can have a look at just how bad these
28:06two patches of welding are to do on the rear of the sill area the plan is i'm going to poke away at it
28:16cut away the rusty metal and when that big hole is just a hole in nice clean metal
28:23the job doesn't look nearly so bad it's just a case of fabricating a few new pieces welding them in
28:28a bit of paint a bit of seam sealer and we're done
28:36back with our daimler double six johnny and mark have a present to open look at that oh look
28:44it's the same radiator isn't it well it's not the same radiator now because this one works well we
28:52don't we don't know this yet do we there's quite a faulty one back in isn't it oh we've done worse
28:56than that before haven't we yeah what we do know is that it's all been painted up and now looks like
29:03new straightforward then straightforward what is it to say refitting is a reversal of removal is that
29:10the exact one sounds good to me right do you want to grab that side just check we don't hit anything
29:18on the way down it's all a little tight isn't it bigger yep and you thought you'd probably short
29:25changes with a smaller car didn't you
29:30so really that's in and then a lot of wires a lot of pipes you're back on it
29:36yeah there's not a lot of room around any of this well they seem to have put two engines in one car
29:42don't they they basically have haven't they after quite a bit of fiddling though everything did
29:49eventually get reattached and we were almost ready to start the old beast up but the most important
29:56thing is to test it isn't it what we'll do we'll just fill it with water for now because obviously if
30:02we put coolant in guarantee it leaks put water in guarantee it doesn't leak wasting all that
30:08coolant all over the floor and getting your shoes wet because someone's forgotten to do a pipe up on
30:13the radiator or something like that
30:25but as it turns out all seems to be okay
30:28johnny and mark and neil who fixed the radiator have made this v12 sing again without spending a
30:35fortune that's running no leaks
30:42so we'll get the bonnet on then drain all that fluid off proper coolant in and uh
30:48i'm calling that i win with the main mechanical problem solved we can now move on to the paintwork
30:55just wiggle it a little bit there which in theory should be fairly straightforward
31:17in darlington it's full steam ahead with our 1969 triumph 2000
31:22tim's been busy since we were last here done a whole lot of welding repairs to the rear and the
31:29underside completely refurbished all the suspension it's all like brand new under there better than
31:34brand new in fact but there's still something missing under the bonnet we've taken the cylinder
31:40head off to do an unleaded petrol conversion on it that's all ready now all the work's been done
31:46we've just got to finish the assembly on that and then put all the carburetors and stuff back on it and
31:51get it fired up again and running before that though we get to reinstall the refurbished seats
31:58completely recovered in new leather they'll be one of the first things a prospective buyer will
32:03see so we think it was worth the extra expense looks gorgeous in there now really lifted this car
32:11leg room to our comfort that's that seat right back even a lot of big cars you don't get that much
32:17so this is our cylinder head this is the combustion chamber this is where the valves go this is where
32:28we'll put the insert for the valve to sit on that's our inlet valve and that's our exhaust valve the seat
32:35this bit here that's a hardened steel insert and with that tim gets to reward himself for all the hard
32:44work once you start reassembling that's easy and it's really enjoyable the new head gasket the head
32:53they're not like those gravity helps nuts and washers
33:03water pump on fan belt on
33:07so the carburetors have all been completely stripped and refurbished and also this troublesome little water
33:13connection here it's always corroded and breaks there we go new hoses coolant oil and spark plugs
33:22and we're ready for a start tim is confident it'll be fine
33:36it's not firing probably just because plug leads aren't on in the right place
33:41the spark would be trying to ignite the air fuel mixture at the wrong time in the cylinders
33:48let's try that
33:54not that then but further investigation points to another culprit i don't think i've got fuel in one
34:02of the carburetors so it's possible the little valve is stuck time for some analog treatment
34:09i'll just try giving it a little clunk see if that can wake it up
34:16there we go
34:25brilliant yeah really good that's what we wanted
34:29and with that very pleasant sound ringing in our ears after two months in the workshop we're all
34:37done apart from a bit of polishing these things take time so yeah it's worth it in it
34:46definitely worth it in terms of preservation financially well that's a world apart
34:53all in to buy our luxury triumph was seven thousand and eighty five pounds labor set us back seven
34:59thousand nine hundred and eighty parts came in at three thousand eight hundred and ten
35:05and the seat re-trimming was one thousand five hundred and sixty bringing the total to a slightly
35:11uncomfortable twenty thousand four hundred and thirty five pounds she's a beauty ain't she tan interior
35:20as you can see people open the door and it smells right and looks nice you're halfway there simple as
35:25that got the door fitting nice the door was awful wasn't it it was really really a shocking fit
35:31nice it's lovely isn't it beautiful car
35:33but importantly how does it drive sweet isn't that made a nice job of the engine set that up well
35:41haven't they overall you've turned out a really nice smart well presented very saleable car
35:49gearbox is nice and precise look at that what a smooth overdrive operation that is fantastic
35:57over drive engages a higher ratio gear allowing cruising at lower revs lovely lovely but you can tell
36:08i'm a fan and i just love them to vinston the triumph 2000 here this is a cracker started with a nice car
36:20i made it even nicer now i've got a lot of bits here go right away up to nine thousand two hundred and
36:26fifty but nine thousand two hundred and fifty pounds nine five ten thousand pounds says and
36:31his phone there at ten thousand pound eleven thousand pound fresh bid eleven thousand pound we have
36:37going to bring it down to eleven thousand pound provisional eleven thousand pound provisional
36:43not a great result financially but there was a small consolation derring negotiated an extra grand on
36:50the sale price with the new owner after agreeing to deliver the triumph in person and buy him a pint
36:56just outside new york johnny and mark are nearly done with our 1983 v12 daimler it's a good looking car
37:13over the last few days the paint blemishes were investigated properly filled and painted there was no
37:18need to take the windows out we're doing the front brakes we're replacing the discs and pads there's
37:26a tiny oil leak on the diff um but i don't think that's worth getting into i don't even think they'd advise
37:31it we always want our projects to get through an mot and look good but with a potential money pit like
37:38this one you've got to know when to stop could have repainted the whole car you know there's little minor
37:44blemishes on it here there and everywhere but it's a good example very nice car somebody would be proud
37:50to own it you could actually fully restore that then forty thousand pound and it won't look much different
37:59there's a little bit of pitting on the brakes and i think there was slight imbalance so you just to get
38:04rid of that wobble you know safety you've got to take it fairly seriously unless you sell a car to
38:09somebody you really don't like then it's irrelevant so in the old days you could take them off and get
38:14them skimmed but what we've got is some nice coated discs which are coated in a coating that i don't
38:20know what it is sugar is it sugar yeah sugar coated apparently mark sugar coated discs
38:27and with that the icing on this particular cake
38:32is to give the repaired areas of bodywork a final polish
38:35there's no rot in it it's solid you could go around the whole car and find fault on every
38:44panel you just want a nice usable car that you can get in and drive that's what you want
38:48and uh you see if you did those other bits the actual fact it just mean you'd be scared to use it
38:57johnny and mark are very much looking forward to using it
39:00even if it is just up the road for a test drive
39:09both of their dads had one and for mark the memories of happy family days out are all flooding back
39:16we were up north you know back in the day you'd be going how are you man dad are we there yet are we
39:21there yet dad would be up front and he'd be a little bit annoyed pipe down in the back man you little
39:27rascals we're not stopping at the little chef again we're going up
39:32luxury motoring isn't it from back in the day luxury room until we run out of fuel
39:37man yeah so that is below zero now uh-huh uh and you've already put 20 pound in not very long
39:43ago 20 quid so i wind my window up so it's yes it's even better look at that let's see look at that
39:4943 years old and he's like he's like floating along isn't it it's just like breezy on a cushioned
39:56happiness
39:59you're driving along and it feels like a new car it's quiet smooth
40:03luxurious very nice drive you can't really fault it can you
40:08with a bit of an angle on the car there and if you could just look a little younger
40:12i think we might have got one there
40:21we think the just right amounts of work has been done on this daimler double six
40:25and we got lucky when it came to the paint fixers which looked seamless
40:30but how much have we spent well including tax and commission it was a slightly opulent
40:36seven thousand four hundred and twelve pounds to buy labor was eight hundred and fifty five parts
40:42were seven hundred and ninety three and the radiator refurb was 354 as opposed to 900 for a new one
40:51which brings the total to a very gentlemanly nine thousand to four hundred and fourteen pounds
40:56done a lovely job the guys really good job the car's magnificent i can't see any real sign of any
41:06recent paint work around there it looks very very good they'd have had to lacquered it and lost it
41:09around here but they've got a beautiful match absolutely superb match really really good if i
41:14done that i'll be over the moon with that absolutely let's have a look oh smell that in there oh man i'll
41:21tell you lamb's wall over rugs in there look dashboard look at the dashboard on these daimler's
41:26particular you'll have the same pattern on that glove box as you wheel around the dials on the
41:31other side they mirror it like that you know clever in it rolls do the same thing super what a car
41:40and on to the daimler double six now this is a lovely car this it's been away and it's had lots
41:47done so there we are then eight thousand pound bid thank you and nine and nine thousand five hundred
41:53pound beer oh this is good it's very good 500 pounds then ten thousand ten thousand five ten
42:00thousand five hundred then for the first second third and last time looking round at ten thousand
42:06five hundred that is very very strong ten and a half grand for one of those
42:14derrick was right about this car all along because unbelievably that's a one thousand pounds profit
42:21we're in shock and it's all good too for new owner brian davies there it is as he arrives to pick up
42:29his new daimler i remember them from the day i always thought they were a great looking car we have
42:35a collection and we saw this we just thought it's in really good condition and what have you so we
42:40thought yeah why not probably the oldest still the car that we've got in the collection is a morris
42:451300 gt but the rest are sort of like all post 2000s so yeah it'll be a nice addition to it and
42:53you know quite pleasant on a sunday to take it out and have a run around it a bit apprehensive
42:59because we're driving it all the way back to the wirral fingers crossed confident um i'm confident
43:04it'll probably cost about 300 quid in petrol yeah see you later
