00:00This program is rated G and considered acceptable for all ages.
00:21Ivanhoe, North Carolina.
00:23I can honestly say I've never heard of it, but it's a beautiful little place.
00:27This property here, a little over 17 acres, small cinder block building.
00:33Right off the back is the Black River.
00:37Three Sisters, rivers flow into it.
00:40They do a lot of hunting on another track of land that they have,
00:43some old family land that's over 100 acres, real close to here.
00:46They got some heritage here.
00:48This is what we want to preserve through Renovation Hunters.
01:21Renovation Hunters is presented by Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods.
01:36Welcome back, crew.
01:38You can tell it's Renovation Hunters season because it's raining.
01:42We just can't get away from it, but you know what?
01:47Ivanhoe, North Carolina.
01:49Beautiful little place.
01:50We just seem to find them.
01:52These submissions are awesome.
01:54Perfect little cabin, about 700 square feet.
01:56This particular build, you know, they were content with the sleeping arrangements, the kitchen area, but they wanted more room.
02:06And I said, inside or outside, they said, we don't care.
02:10There's a million things to fix.
02:11The floor was in bad shape.
02:13The termites had got into it.
02:14The roof we were planning on replacing next year, and the well doesn't work properly.
02:20And so those are the three things that I really was hoping that they would fix.
02:24But when we were going through it with Hal and Kevin, I was like, oh my gosh, we need to replace the windows.
02:30The siding is rotten.
02:32The decks are in shambles.
02:35It wasn't very sealed to the outdoors so that you would find a lot of friends inside that maybe you didn't invite.
02:45I just don't want to sleep with that stuff.
02:47I love the idea of having a space that's not fancy or anything, but just like comfortable and feels homey for us.
02:55We could maybe bring friends out for the day.
02:58I think, yeah, I love that idea.
03:01We can't just leave well enough alone sometimes.
03:04So we're going to do a little bit of improvements throughout the place.
03:08But, you know, that's the fun part about it.
03:09They have no idea what we're doing.
03:11So we're going to add a little bit to it, minor demo, but I think this will be a nice conversion.
03:18Now, Hal's not here today.
03:20He didn't oversleep.
03:21He's actually in Florida at God's Country Outfitters.
03:26They have the NWTF youth hunt that he's on.
03:29So let's see what we can get knocked out inside before he gets here.
03:41Kevin, he ain't too good at plumbing, from what I've heard.
03:49So they brought me in.
03:51I'm taking over plumbing.
03:53That's what I do.
03:54So I'm here to do whatever I'm told.
03:57It was Thanksgiving dinner, and Hal mentioned something about the show, and he was like,
04:05well, we kind of need a plumber.
04:08Would you be interested in coming and meeting the cast and doing the show?
04:13So I was like, heck yeah.
04:17I do mainly new construction.
04:20We plumb two to three houses a week.
04:22I'm going to take the taxidermy down.
04:42That's program number one.
04:44A little painting inside, so bouncing all over.
04:46Everybody's finding their place.
04:49Christy and Alex started on some painting.
04:52Normally, we usually wait to paint at day five, day six, even day seven.
04:57I know it's upside down, but we're taking advantage of our inside dry conditions.
05:02So we're going to throw some paint on the walls.
05:04Oh my goodness.
05:04Look at this.
05:09I'll be in the shoe.
05:11Yeah, I thought we were just painting in this room, but it looks like we're going to be doing some repairs too.
05:14Yeah.
05:15I'm sure there'll be a handful of things like that.
05:17That's termites, I'm guessing.
05:19Okay.
05:20I won't be stepping there.
05:20Add that to the list.
05:22Oh, man.
05:24Well, like always, I guess we got the heaviest, dirtiest, hardest part of it all.
05:32How does that always work that way?
05:33I don't think they like us inside, honestly.
05:35Yeah, that's true.
05:36That's very true.
05:38So you know what I'm thinking on this?
05:40We got the skid steer.
05:42What if we just went through, cut all the posts, and we'll take that skid steer and just drag it out of here.
05:49If we could rip this thing out real quick, and then we just move around to the front porch, we've got to pull that whole roof off, all the wood up there.
05:56That'll be easy.
05:57Yeah.
05:57We'll knock all this out.
05:58We should be able to get it today if the weather will get this today.
06:01You know, it doesn't get worse.
06:02I don't know how it could get worse.
06:04But we got a skid steer.
06:05Can't go wrong.
06:05Yeah.
06:10We go big, or we go home.
06:12So Camper's idea, strap it to the skid steer, rip it off the house, and drive it away.
06:20Everyone says, no, that won't work, Camper, you're crazy.
06:22I said, no, trust me.
06:25Strapped it to the skid steer, ripped it off the house, and guess what?
06:29Camper's right again.
06:42Taking the rear deck off, no problem.
06:58Camper and Mike cut the steps free, popped that thing up.
07:02The front porch was a little trickier.
07:07My original idea was to work on this porch here and save it.
07:10But upon inspection, it just needs to be torn down and built right.
07:14So we're going to put a gable roof on it.
07:17Kevin's going to rip this apart, but we need four guys on each corner here to look and make
07:21sure it's safe as he pulls it out.
07:27Camper!
07:29The strange part was we lifted it up, take the posts out, and the posts just fell down.
07:35So it's a good thing we're replacing that.
07:40Rob, that was your corner.
07:45Pulled that thing back up, threw it in the dumpster, and we were off to the next project.
07:53Hey, Kevin.
07:54How far are you for safe?
07:56We've got a moisture problem.
07:58It's so much humidity that all the paint we're putting up there is just dripping down,
08:02gathering up on the baseboard.
08:03So closing windows and doors, the best we can do is run the fan, but I mean, it's just weaving.
08:11All right.
08:14Well, it's actually going to help we put siding on the outside.
08:18Okay.
08:19But that doesn't help us on the inside right now.
08:21So just go ahead and run the fans.
08:24No more painting for today.
08:26Okay.
08:26I knew that wasn't going to be a good call.
08:29I'm off paint theater now, so.
08:30Okay.
08:31Well, hey, if you're not going to paint anymore.
08:34Let me rip floor up.
08:35How about ripping some floor up?
08:36At least we'll get some ventilation in here.
08:38That'd be good.
08:39Some of these termite boards, maybe fix what they attempted to patch in.
08:45Okay.
08:45And then we'll go back over and try to stain it up.
08:49Yep.
08:49That works.
08:50We know.
08:50Blind it in.
08:53Looks like you've got a little work to do there, buddy.
08:56Ah.
09:08Day one, we've got holes to dig.
09:10In order to keep this train going, we've got to make sure that our 36-inch holes are dug
09:16and ready for the inspector.
09:18So that's the first thing we did.
09:19It was raining.
09:20It was nasty.
09:21So obviously painting and all that stuff was out of the question for the outside of the house.
09:26But once the holes were dug, we started laying out the deck, and Alex and I started banging
09:31on getting the siding ready.
09:32So this is where Renovation Hunters gets to do a little hunting.
09:41Well, not really hunting, but we're shooting 22 rounds into concrete, of all things.
09:47But this is the easiest way to attach these strips so that we can get the siding up.
09:56We've got to put these strips 16-on-center across this whole thing and go around the windows.
10:00That way the siding can go up.
10:02Spending all day shooting that gun, my hands are jammed.
10:06So a little T-Rex-y over here, but I think it'll all work out.
10:19Day one of the build.
10:21I didn't want to be the problem child.
10:23So early on, we're looking, and there's like maybe one or two boards that had a little bit
10:28termite damage.
10:29You can see it on the surface, on the hardwood there.
10:31And so poked it, removed some of that, and then once we started seeing the sub-four underneath,
10:37had to cut more and more and more.
10:38So it's not just what you see on the surface.
10:40It's like an iceberg.
10:41There's a whole bunch underneath there.
10:43That sub-four, we were hoping it was going to be okay, but it just kept going and going
10:47and going.
10:48So I think I have maybe like a 10-foot by 3-foot hole in the four that I have to fix.
10:54We've got some sub-four down right now.
10:56It's at least patched up, so you don't fall through.
10:57It's not a danger.
10:58But we now need to source some hardwood to go over top there, and that wasn't in our
11:02bared order.
11:09We're pretty much finished with demo day one.
11:11We started putting it back together.
11:13So we unboxed the cabinets, and then trying to level those cabinets on a floor, which
11:18is similar to most of the floors we see on Renovation Hunters.
11:21It kind of looks like a wave pool.
11:24I got to work setting kitchen cabinets, which took a while, because nothing in this place
11:35is level or square or plumb.
11:39But a lot of shims later, we got some nice-looking kitchen cabinets.
11:43What can I say?
11:43First day here in Ivanhoe, Season 3, Renovation Hunters.
11:47Back porch got demoed.
11:48Footings got dug.
11:50We have the sleepers going up here for the siding.
11:53Incredible.
11:54Front porch came down.
11:56They got the new framework up for the roof.
11:58They are actually working on the patterns right now for the rafters.
12:02Despite all the rain, it's been working fabulous, except for the inside.
12:07Too much humidity.
12:09The paint is actually running off the walls, and Adam started on the floor just to check
12:13out some termite damage.
12:15It's worse than we expected.
12:16But hey, the girls have the kitchen cabinets set.
12:19So we're just rolling right along.
12:22Keep your fingers crossed.
12:23This one might be ahead of schedule.
12:30Once the lid is here, we'll be right there.
12:34Let's go.
13:04Oh, all right, guys.
13:12Well, day two, we're moving along.
13:15Everything's going great.
13:16Getting the roof on today.
13:18Hopefully wrap up this front porch today.
13:21We're also going to do a little birdwatching from up here.
13:24Camper Tech Tip, number 8,000.
13:27Whenever Kevin is working behind the house,
13:30you can do birdwatching in the front of the house.
13:34Stick it.
13:42Take that one.
13:45Out.
13:46Yep.
13:46Looks good from my neighbor's porch.
13:58Are we good?
13:58Yes.
14:01Look, it's already starting.
14:05Getting the stud and everything.
14:08All right, so we just got to go to the front of the house.
14:10Yeah, I think they're done with the front roof
14:13so we can get to the front.
14:14Kevin's putting the deck together back there.
14:16Okay, so we'll avoid him.
14:18Yeah, right.
14:19So we'll stay on the opposite side of the house.
14:21Okay.
14:21And then we'll go back here once he's long gone
14:23and get those shot at.
14:25Yeah, because the barn wood going on the back,
14:26so it's going to go on the same way.
14:28Well, it's day two,
14:29and we might be doing siding today.
14:31Let's do it.
14:32We're like a day ahead, man.
14:33Let's get it done.
14:34Let's go.
14:34Here we are, middle of day two,
14:50and we were rocking and rolling,
14:51and guess what?
14:52Sun is shining, beautiful day.
14:54Front porch is just about framed,
14:56working on the siding.
14:57I got Rob and Alex putting on the strips.
15:01Christy, Steph just finished up inside the kitchen area.
15:05Adam was working on the floor.
15:07Finally got to a good point to stop.
15:09Going to have him jump outside here
15:10and start running some siding.
15:11So I'm going ahead and prep the deck.
15:14This is going to be a construction by number project.
15:16Once we get our inspection tomorrow on the footings,
15:18we'll be able to pour those,
15:20and we can start this.
15:21I'm going to say by tomorrow evening,
15:22we're going to be putting walls up on this thing.
15:24So while everything's progressing here,
15:27our leader is sick.
15:29And it's best he's just going to lay low for a day or two,
15:33get his strength back,
15:35but he'll be here soon.
15:36Oh, my.
16:00Look who finally made it to the party.
16:01Funny news is getting to work.
16:03We're about to get yelled at.
16:05The start of season three for me personally
16:07has been a trial of a fire, literally.
16:09Yesterday, I was laying in a bed with an IV in my arm
16:12and had been as sick as I have been
16:14for the last three days ever in my life.
16:17But thank goodness to modern medicine.
16:19My wife's a nurse.
16:20She called in another nurse.
16:22I missed the first couple days.
16:24I am here now.
16:25I feel great.
16:26I'm thankful to the good Lord above
16:28that he got me better
16:29so I can come here and be a part of this.
16:31Well, they say better late than never.
16:35It's almost heaven.
16:36I love you, huh?
16:37I want you to have all of it.
16:39If you can finish it then,
16:41I'll take off the last three days.
16:43No.
16:45Wow.
16:46I can already see a little bit of a change.
16:48Oh, my gosh.
16:49They have been knocking it out of the park, man.
16:51Crew's been after it?
16:52Been after it.
16:53Inside, outside, all around.
16:55I should have known.
16:56Super Kev had it all under control.
16:59Oh-ho.
17:01Wow.
17:02Look at who it is.
17:03It's our painter.
17:04Good morning.
17:05How are you?
17:06Good.
17:07Waiting for the bear truck to get here
17:09so I can start painting.
17:10Come on.
17:12Oh, wow.
17:13It's all...
17:14Oh, you even got some cabinets up.
17:15We won't tell the crew,
17:16but they're probably a day ahead
17:17of where we had planned.
17:18We had a few problems.
17:20They had some severe turn light stuff going on.
17:22So we started looking at some of this
17:24termite damage on the surface.
17:27Thought it was...
17:27Oh, no.
17:28And then when you got underneath...
17:28And then it kept going and going,
17:30and it just spread.
17:33So what has happened is
17:34all the condensation on this wall
17:37is running down.
17:38This is terrible for it.
17:40We were underneath there
17:40to lag that band on for the deck,
17:43and they have everything drilled
17:45for termite treatment.
17:47So they've taken care of it properly.
17:49We just need to fix what was done.
17:52It was really relieving
17:53to come back after being so sick
17:55to get here and find out
17:57smooth as silk.
17:59Oh, wildlife farming here, baby.
18:02We don't only renovate the house.
18:06We renovate the habitat.
18:07And this is our habitat specialist
18:09right here, my man, Gary.
18:12Pleasure to be here.
18:13It is, brother.
18:13Pleasure to be here.
18:14Drove all the way from the big moe
18:16all the way here.
18:18That's right.
18:18You need to stretch a little bit,
18:20do this.
18:20Well, I thought I was country.
18:22Oh, no, this is country.
18:24This is country out here.
18:25Come on.
18:26Ivanhoe, North Carolina,
18:28fits our mission.
18:29We've got just a good country family.
18:32The dad is an avid outdoorsman.
18:35Mom loves it, too.
18:36And they have a cinder block house here.
18:39They just needed some help.
18:40My mom is from Ivanhoe,
18:42and we grew up going there
18:46and visiting where she grew up.
18:48We didn't have a place to stay
18:49or anything like that,
18:50so we'd just be a day trip up and back.
18:53My father called me.
18:54He said,
18:55I just floated the Black River
18:56with a friend of his,
18:57and he said,
18:59I saw a spot that's up
19:01by the old train track.
19:03He goes,
19:03I'm going to see if they'll sell it.
19:05I was interested,
19:06so he and I went in on it,
19:07and it had that little cabin on it
19:09that was in a lot of disrepair.
19:11I'd always planned to move back,
19:13but at that time,
19:14I was working in Charleston,
19:16so I wasn't here very much.
19:18So, yeah,
19:18he pretty much redid that.
19:20He had some friends help him out,
19:22but most of the remodeling
19:24that was done there,
19:26he did by himself.
19:27The things we can hunt up there,
19:29white-tailed deer,
19:30wild turkeys,
19:31quail,
19:32and ducks.
19:34They love turkey hunting,
19:36deer hunting.
19:37We've got a huge project to do
19:39on Habitat coming up
19:40with our friends
19:41at Wildlife Farming.
19:42We're really making a difference
19:43in the habitats
19:44around these places,
19:45and the great thing is
19:46is our partners
19:47are recognizing the value
19:49and the humanitarian effort
19:50we're doing here,
19:51and more and more partners
19:53are coming on board with us
19:55because they see the need
19:57for changing the way
19:59people look at the outdoors
20:00and making sure
20:02that people have this lineage
20:03to pass on to their families
20:06where they always have a place
20:07to get outdoors.
20:09It's a great place
20:10for a kid to be a kid.
20:11They can get dirty
20:11and get down into the river
20:13and swim if they want to
20:14and dig up freshwater mussels
20:16and things like that,
20:17and they have a great time.
20:18They chase lizards
20:19and everything else over there.
20:21It's coming!
20:22It's coming in!
20:23There you go!
20:26Oh, yeah!
20:28Oh, yeah!
20:32That's what my schedule
20:33looks like today.
20:34I'm behind.
20:35I've got to get Habitat in.
20:36I've got wildlife farming here.
20:38We've got to get this site prep
20:40to put in the other container.
20:42I've got six tons of fertilizer
20:44and lime that's got to be delivered.
20:46My day will be long,
20:48strenuous, tenuous.
20:50You name it,
20:50it's going to be that.
20:51But the good thing is
20:53I've got five more days
20:54to get it all done.
20:56We're making a drive
20:57to get people out
20:59to enjoy the natural resources
21:01that are so abundant
21:02that this country has.
21:04And the way to do that
21:05is to reestablish
21:07everybody's place
21:08where they gather
21:09in the outdoors.
21:10This is more about a mission
21:12than it is about a renovation.
21:13It is about a mission.
