05:08Job, Overcoming the Overwhelming
05:11We live in a world which has been described by many
05:17As a time of overwhelming situations
05:21Overwhelming concern
05:23That's not a word that we used a lot until recently
05:26A lot of people today are overwhelmed
05:29We all know the troubles of the world
05:32Have a way of seeping into our lives
05:34Even as Christians
05:35And we get overwhelmed by these problems
05:38The issues of life can inundate our personal world
05:41So we don't know which direction we're going
05:43And even though we know Jesus Christ
05:45If we don't stay focused on the principles of the Word of God
05:48We can get lost and wonder sometimes
05:51How we ever get back
05:52The issues of life are dealt with in the Scripture
05:56One of the reasons I love to preach on the characters of the Bible
06:00Is because I understand and resonate with them
06:03I understand who they are and what they're going through
06:06And the problems that people had in Bible days
06:09Are the same problems we have today
06:11Consider God's servant Job
06:14The book of Job
06:17Is the earliest book of the Bible to be written
06:20A lot of people don't know that
06:23They think Genesis is the earliest book
06:25Genesis is the first book in the Bible
06:27But it's not the earliest book written
06:28The book of Job is
06:30And let me tell you what that means
06:31That means in the earliest book of the Bible that was written
06:35God was so concerned about helping us deal with life struggles
06:39That his first words to humanity
06:41Were how to live with overwhelming circumstances
06:44As he tells us the story of Job
06:46So here from the first chapter of Job
06:49Is a little encouragement about how to deal with the overwhelming
06:52Becoming an overcomer
06:55The testimony of Job is given to us in his book
06:59Most of the biographical information is in the first few verses
07:02Let me tell you about this man right from the scripture
07:05Let me tell you about his faith
07:07Job chapter 1 verse 1 says
07:09There was a man in the land of Uz
07:12Whose name was Job
07:13And that man was blameless and upright
07:16And one who feared God
07:18And shunned evil
07:20The Bible speaks often
07:22Of the value of fearing God
07:24And having a respectful attitude
07:26An attitude that used to be prevalent in our culture
07:28Years ago but is long lost
07:30In the days in which we live
07:32Job's faith
07:34Let me tell you about his family
07:36Because here in the first verses of this chapter of Job
07:39We have a report filed on the family of Job
07:43And seven sons and three daughters were born to Job
07:48And his sons would go and feast in their houses
07:51Each on his appointed day
07:53And they would send and invite their three sisters
07:56To eat and drink with them
07:57So it was when the days of feasting had run their course
08:01That Job would rise early in the morning
08:03And offer burnt offerings
08:04According to the number of them all
08:06For Job said
08:08It may be that my sons have sinned
08:10And cursed God in their hearts
08:11And thus Job did regularly
08:13Now watch what's going on here
08:15Job's family was truly a sign
08:18Of God's blessing upon him
08:19And from what we can learn
08:22He had a really good family
08:24The Bible says they met frequently
08:26To celebrate their birthdays
08:28That's what it means in the text
08:29And the fact that the girls were included in the party
08:33Now that's a big deal in the Old Testament
08:34That wasn't often true
08:35In Job's family
08:37If you were a daughter
08:38You were treated just like you were a son
08:40They came to the parties too
08:42I suppose I should tell you about his fortune
08:45He was a rich dude
08:46Listen to this
08:47Also his possessions were 7,000 sheep
08:513,000 camels
08:53500 yoke of oxen
08:55500 female donkeys
08:57And a very large household
08:58So that this man
09:00Was the greatest of all the people of the east
09:03Now in the days of Job
09:05Wealth wasn't calculated in dollars and cents
09:08But in terms of land and animals and servants
09:11Job had all three in abundance
09:13He said
09:14If I have made gold my hope
09:16Or said to find gold
09:17You are my confidence
09:18If I have rejoiced
09:20Because my wealth was great
09:22And because my hand had gained much
09:24This would be an iniquity
09:26Whenever we have anything
09:28That seems overwhelming to us
09:30We just need to remember
09:32Whatever we have is from God
09:33And we need to give him the credit
09:36And give him the praise
09:37And the honor
09:38And that's what Job did
09:39So Job had an impeccable faith
09:43He had an incredible family
09:45He had an unbelievable fortune
09:47And he had some friends
09:50Now we may want to discuss that a little bit later on
09:54But Job had some friends
09:56It says in Job 2.11
09:57Now when Job's three friends
09:59Heard of all this adversity
10:00That had come upon him
10:02Each one came from his own place
10:04Eliphaz the Temanite
10:05Bildad the Shuhite
10:06And Zophar the Naamanite
10:08For they had made an appointment together
10:10To come and mourn with him
10:12And to comfort him
10:13I won't go any further with that right now
10:15Except to say
10:16That from chapter 3
10:18To chapter 37
10:19In the book of Job
10:21You will find the dialogue
10:22Between Job and his friends
10:25Now I've often thought
10:27That the best part of their friendship
10:28Is when they came
10:29And they sat for a few days
10:31And didn't say anything
10:33Once they started talking
10:35It went downhill
10:36How many of you know
10:38That when somebody's suffering
10:40Sometimes the best thing you can do
10:42Is just go sit with them
10:43It's really hard to know what to say
10:45Whatever you'd say
10:46Don't say
10:46I know what you're going through
10:48Because you don't
10:49Mostly
10:50So Job had some friends
10:53And over and over
10:55After Job began to hear their counsel
10:58These friends said
11:00Job there's something so wrong in your life
11:03That God is punishing you
11:05Your suffering is special punishment from God
11:08This was their constant refrain
11:11In essence they said
11:12Job you need to confess the terrible evil
11:15That has brought you all this trouble
11:17What awful thing have you done
11:19Why is God punishing you so severely
11:22How many of you know
11:23There are a lot of people today
11:24Who believe that
11:25That when you're going through hard times
11:27It's the punishment from God
11:29Before his troubles
11:31Job felt as if God's lamp
11:33Shone on his life
11:35Even in dark times
11:37The light of God's presence
11:38Brightened his life
11:39And he had access
11:41To the friendly counsel of God
11:43But the book of Job
11:45As you know
11:46Is not about how good Job's family was
11:48Or how much money he had
11:49Or all of the other ancillary things
11:52That we've talked about
11:53The book of Job
11:54Is about what happened to him
11:56About the testing of Job
11:58We've listened to the testimony of Job
12:00Let me remind you of the testing of Job
12:03We listened to the conversation
12:05Between God and Satan
12:06And we discovered
12:07That there is a lot more going on
12:09With Job than meets the eye
12:10This section is all about Satan
12:12And his dealings with men and God
12:15There's a whole bunch you can learn
12:17About the adversary
12:18In these few verses
12:19Satan's goal is to devour
12:21The influence of God's people
12:23Someone once asked me
12:25Why is it that it seems like
12:27There are so many people
12:28Who are in spiritual leadership
12:30And have great influence
12:32Over the family of God
12:33And they fall into some sin
12:35And their life is ruined
12:36And the testimony of their church
12:38Is destroyed
12:39Why is that?
12:40Because Satan's number one goal
12:42Is to snuff out the influence
12:44Of anyone who's making a difference
12:46In the kingdom of God
12:47That's what he's up to
12:48And the activity of Satan
12:53Is only possible
12:54Because he has access
12:55Now there was a day
12:56When the sons of God
12:57Came to present themselves
12:59Before the Lord
12:59And Satan came among them
13:01So Satan went out
13:03From the presence of the Lord
13:04Now I know this is a hard thing
13:06For us to comprehend
13:07That Satan is a fallen creature
13:09Yet he still has access to God
13:11He has not been excluded
13:13From God's presence
13:14In spite of what some may think
13:16Satan is not yet in hell
13:18He's headed there
13:19But he's not there yet
13:20He has access to heaven
13:23And to earth
13:24And when he comes before God
13:26What is he called?
13:26He is the accuser of the brethren
13:29What is Satan doing in heaven
13:31Before God?
13:32He's telling God
13:33All the stuff he knows about you
13:34As if God didn't already know
13:35Satan's accusation
13:39Is in verses 8 through 11
13:40Here's where the plot
13:42Begins to thicken
13:42Then the Lord said to Satan
13:45Have you considered my servant Job
13:47That there is none like him
13:50On the earth
13:50A blameless and upright man
13:52One who fears God
13:53And shuns evil
13:54And Satan answered the Lord
13:57And said
13:57Does Job fear God for nothing?
14:00Have you not made a hedge
14:01Around him
14:02Around his household
14:02Around all that he has
14:04On every side
14:04You have blessed the work
14:05Of his hands
14:06And his possessions
14:07Have increased in the land
14:08But now stretch out your hand
14:10And touch all that he has
14:12And he will curse you
14:13To your face
14:14Satan's attack
14:16Was really against God
14:17He was saying
14:18God you and Job made a deal
14:20He's promised to worship you
14:22As long as you prosper him
14:23God you are not worthy
14:25To be worshipped
14:26So you have to pay people
14:27To worship you
14:28Even though Job
14:30Did not know God
14:32Was doing this
14:33He held fast to his integrity
14:35And he blessed God
14:36Please note that God
14:37Found no fault with Job
14:39God's statement in verse 8
14:41Is the same as the statement
14:42In verse 1
14:43On three occasions
14:44God says that Job
14:46Job is not guilty
14:47And we're going to see
14:49How amazing that is
14:51Notice Satan has access
14:54He makes accusations
14:55But he's also accountable
14:58And the Lord said to Satan
15:00Behold all that Job has
15:02Is in your power
15:03Only do not lay a hand
15:04On his person
15:05So Satan went out
15:07From the presence of the Lord
15:08How many of you know
15:09Satan has some power
15:10But he's on a leash
15:12And the other end of the leash
15:13Is in the hand of God
15:14Satan can't do anything
15:16God won't let him do
15:17God has set boundaries
15:20For Satan's activities
15:21Now
15:23Let me tell you
15:24What happened to Job
15:25Some of you know this
15:26Some of you may not
15:27This is a story
15:28Unparalleled
15:29The trials of Job
15:31The next section here
15:34Describes Job's loss
15:36Of everything
15:36With the exception
15:38Of his wife
15:39First of all
15:41The loss of his stock
15:42And his servants
15:43Job 1
15:4413 to 15
15:46Now there was a day
15:47When his sons and daughters
15:48Were eating and drinking wine
15:49In their oldest brother's house
15:51And a messenger came to Job
15:53And said
15:53The oxen were plowing
15:55And the donkeys feeding beside them
15:57When the Sabaeans raided them
15:58And took them away
15:59Indeed they have killed the servants
16:01With the edge of the sword
16:02And I alone have escaped
16:04To come and tell you
16:05Here comes the first
16:07Of four messengers
16:08To tell Job
16:09That his oxen
16:10And donkeys have been stolen
16:12And all the servants
16:13Who were watching them
16:14Have been killed
16:15And only one guy's left
16:16And he's the guy
16:17Who brings the bad news
16:18To Job
16:19Next is the loss
16:21Of his sheep
16:22And his shepherds
16:23Verse 16
16:24While he was still speaking
16:25Another also came and said
16:27The fire of God
16:28Fell from heaven
16:29Burned up the sheep
16:30And the servants
16:31And consumed them
16:32And I alone
16:33Have escaped to tell you
16:34This is the first
16:36Of three instances
16:37Of the phrase
16:38While he was yet speaking
16:40The repetition of this phrase
16:43Was for the purpose
16:44Of showing how rapid
16:46These things happen
16:46One after the other
16:48The loss of the stock
16:49And the servants
16:50The loss of the sheep
16:51And the shepherds
16:52Now the loss of the servants
16:53And the camels
16:54While he was still speaking
16:56Another came and said
16:57The Chaldeans formed three bands
17:00Raided the camels
17:01Took them away
17:02Yes
17:02Killed the servants
17:03With the edge of the sword
17:04I alone have escaped
17:06To come and tell you
17:06Now Job's camels
17:09The most prized possession
17:10Of his world
17:11Are gone
17:12But it gets worse
17:14In verses 18 and 19
17:17Of chapter 1
17:18We read of the loss
17:19Of his sons and daughters
17:21While he was yet speaking
17:23Another came and said
17:24Your sons and daughters
17:25Were eating and drinking wine
17:27In their oldest brother's house
17:29And suddenly a great wind
17:31Came from across the wilderness
17:32And struck the four corners
17:35Of the house
17:36And it fell on the young people
17:38And they are all dead
17:39And I alone escaped
17:41To come and tell you
17:43And then
17:45God begins to get closer
17:47And closer to Job himself
17:49And we read of the loss
17:51Of his health
17:52Job chapter 2
17:53When Job failed to succumb
17:56To Satan's attacks
17:57Upon his life
17:58Satan came back to God
18:01With another proposal
18:02Listen to this
18:03So Satan answered the Lord
18:05And said
18:05Skin for skin
18:06Yes all that a man has
18:08He will give for his life
18:09But if you stretch out
18:10Your hand now
18:11And touch his bone
18:12And his flesh
18:13He will surely curse you
18:15To your face
18:15So the Lord
18:18Covered Job's body
18:19With boils
18:20From his head
18:22To his feet
18:23Anybody here ever
18:24Have a boil
18:25Oh my word
18:26Now we come
18:28To the triumph of Job
18:30At the end of this
18:32First chapter
18:32We get our first glimpse
18:34Into Job's integrity
18:36Tested by adversity
18:39First of all
18:40Job released his grief
18:42To God
18:43It says in verse 20
18:45Then Job arose
18:46And tore his robe
18:48And shaved his head
18:49And he fell to the ground
18:51Job is filled with grief
18:52And sorrow
18:53But we know
18:54From what the scripture
18:55Tells us
18:56That he has not lost
18:57One iota of his godliness
18:59He's a godly man
19:01Who's a grieving man
19:02And then he responded
19:05To the greatness of God
19:06In verse 20 he said
19:07And he fell to the ground
19:08And he worshipped
19:10Are you kidding me?
19:13Job you are a better man
19:15Than I am
19:16And all the people said
19:18Amen
19:19Then he reflected
19:21On the goodness of God
19:22The scripture says
19:23He says to God
19:24Naked I came
19:25From my mother's womb
19:26And naked shall I
19:28Return there
19:29The Lord gave
19:30And the Lord has taken away
19:32Blessed be the name
19:34Of the Lord
19:34Everything Job had
19:37Was given to him
19:37By God
19:38God gave it
19:39And according to Job
19:41God had the right
19:42To take it away
19:42And then he refused
19:45To assign guilt to God
19:46In verse 22
19:47The Bible says
19:49In all this
19:50Job did not charge
19:51God with wrong
19:54Job refused to play
19:56The blame game
19:57And then the Bible
19:58Says in verse 22
19:59He remained guiltless
20:00Before God
20:01In all this
20:03In all what?
20:04In all that I've just told you
20:05And everything you've just
20:06Heard tonight
20:07In all this Job
20:09Did not sin
20:10In verse 10 he said
20:14Shall we indeed
20:14Accept good from God
20:16And shall we not
20:17Accept adversity
20:18In all this Job
20:19Did not sin
20:20With his lips
20:21In this book
20:25The book of Job
20:26There are three
20:28Great statements
20:30Of faith
20:30That give us
20:31The ultimate insight
20:33Into why Job
20:34Was able
20:35To deal with
20:36The overwhelming
20:37By becoming
20:38An overcomer
20:39Is Job
20:40An overcomer here?
20:42Is he
20:43Is he an overcomer
20:44Because he's had
20:44A good life?
20:45No
20:46He's an overcomer
20:47In spite of everything
20:48That's happened to him
20:49Because he knows
20:50Some things
20:50Here's what he knows
20:51First statement
20:53Job 13 15
20:54Job said
20:55Though he slay me
20:57Yet will I trust him
20:59Say that with me out loud
21:01Though he slay me
21:03Yet will I trust him
21:05That's the kind of faith
21:07It takes
21:08To get through
21:09The overwhelming world
21:11In which we live
21:11To know that
21:12First of all
21:13We have a deep
21:14Unconditional connection
21:17With the God
21:17Of the universe
21:18And we trust him
21:19We trust him
21:21And the second statement
21:27Was in chapter 19
21:28This is another amazing statement
21:32Job said
21:34I know that my redeemer lives
21:37Now let's go on
21:39To this statement
21:40Job said
21:42For I know that my redeemer lives
21:44And he shall stand at last
21:46On the earth
21:47And after my skin is destroyed
21:50This I know
21:51That in my flesh
21:52I shall see God
21:54Whom I shall see for myself
21:56And my eyes shall behold
21:57And not another
21:58How my heart yearns within me
22:01Now wait a minute
22:02Jesus wasn't here yet
22:06There's no Jesus in Job
22:09And yet somehow almighty God
22:13Gave to Job
22:14A premonition
22:16A pre-looking
22:18At who Jesus was
22:19So that he could say
22:20I know
22:21That my redeemer lives
22:23God did something in Job's heart
22:27The truths of the redemption
22:29Of the soul
22:30And the person of the redeemer
22:32And the resurrection of the body
22:34And the second coming of Christ
22:35And the end of the world
22:37And the promise of everlasting life
22:39All of that
22:40And in what arguably
22:41The earliest book of the Bible
22:43Is this book incredible or what?
22:46In the Old Testament
22:47In the earliest book ever
22:49Here's the whole story of redemption
22:51Though he slay me
22:55Yet will I trust him
22:56And I know that my redeemer lives
22:58And here's the last one
23:00Job 23 10
23:03He knows the way that I take
23:07And when he has tested me
23:09I shall come forth as gold
23:12In other words Job is saying
23:15This is a test of my faith
23:17And when it's over
23:18I'm going to come forth like gold
23:20And in the process
23:21I'm going to closely follow his steps
23:23And I'm going to listen carefully
23:24To the words of his mouth
23:26And the story of Job
23:27Ends in Job 42
23:29And verses 1 and 2
23:31Of that chapter says
23:32Then Job answered the Lord
23:33And said
23:34Lord I know that you can do everything
23:36And that no purpose of yours
23:38Can be withheld from you
23:40In other words
23:41God you're the sovereign Lord
23:42Of the universe
23:43You could have let all of this
23:45Pass me by
23:46But you let it come to me
23:47Because there was a purpose
23:49In it for me
23:50In this final chapter
23:52God met with Job
23:53And Job prayed for his friends
23:56And the Lord restored his life
23:58And his property
23:58And his family
23:59And the book of Job
24:00Concludes with these words
24:02After this Job lived 140 years
24:06And saw his children
24:07And his grandchildren
24:08And his four generations
24:10And Job died old
24:12And full of days
24:12And you know
24:13That God restored to him
24:15His family
24:16Twice over
24:17Are you overwhelmed tonight?
24:21You've never been overwhelmed
24:23Like that
24:23You say
24:25Well Pastor Jeremiah
24:25I'm just so overwhelmed
24:26I don't think I'm going to make it
24:27Why not?
