08:5320-1
08:57ah band rover at last hi gang sorry we're late sorry we're late
09:11oh hello how are you i'm very i'm sorry i'm very very sorry
09:21it's great to be gathering together here at the smallest cog just to celebrate land rovers in all
09:26their different shapes and guises as i think we've illustrated rather well here thank you for coming
09:31great to see you all have a lovely afternoon
09:43this is just a legendary piece of kit that's my that's a little bit of heaven can i go in yes
09:49that's bad isn't it that's proper asbo that isn't it
09:59this is he's over how does he get in and out of that ladder he's actually eight foot tall yeah
10:07that was actually a really significant day as well has been a huge amount of fun
10:11and the social media bit brings that to life and shares it we're infused with this new energy and
10:16enthusiasm for what we do and we can share it with people some of whom might be customers
10:23that worked i'm going to claim my thought of everything
10:30well done thank you very much that worked no it's good on to the next you can have an extra biscuit this
10:33week winner just one just one okay i'll take that
10:47get something out of the way straight away um there has been a slight change in my circumstances
11:05recently um i got divorced which means i now live here and i like it it's got amazing views
11:12place to keep some of my cars and bikes and best of all it's closer to the workshop
11:17i am trying to put a silver lining on this it's been a tough few years but it's not all bad
11:37being closer to the workshop means i can commute in some of my more interesting old cars
11:42cars like this one and when i get to the workshop things are looking up
12:00welcome back to the workshop can you feel it it's different it's tidy we've got artwork on the walls
12:05and there's work that's debbie mcgee's mercedes sl the old mank interior gone new one going in the
12:11maserati indy it is such a relief to see work happening on that car it's nearly there the only
12:17thing you can't see is the team but they are here significantly they're actually in there every morning
12:23about nine o'clock they start the day with a meeting they talk about what they're doing we
12:27communicate as the smallest cog 2.0 is working
12:4016 where are you 17
12:52find myself upside down in debbie mcgee's mercedes
12:55a lot has happened with this car disc on rusty brake pads are gone brake shoes are gone
13:03to be honest the list is never ending we took on debbie's mercedes after flood water damage rendered
13:09it a write-off oh no no no no no i love everything about that car obviously the emotional attachment to paul
13:21and it was my dream car this is not good it's like it's been washed up at sea
13:27because it's been sat for so long with water in it corrosion has taken place and it's actually broke off
13:33all the fuse holders so i've taken this one out and replaced it and uh i'm one step closer to
13:40getting debbie's car running so she can go back out and enjoy the road again debbie i can hear you
13:46hello yes how are you i'm pretty damn good thank you good very well indeed thank you i want to just
13:52show you one thing so if you're okay with that come with me right here is your car anthony is working
14:00on it for you and here he is anthony sailor to debbie hi debbie debbie this is anthony nice to meet
14:05you she's actually running again now go on do it there you go she's back oh i mean that's the best
14:15news ever and i wasn't expecting to hear the engine this morning all right well consider yourself updated
14:21i'll send you some pictures when we've got the interior oh please do fantastic okay great bye brilliant
14:28see that feels so different because i can say yeah we're on time we're on target it's going
14:34to be on budget this is the future this is it's working we're professional anthony ish
14:49the future this is what we're doing change is definitely in the air and there's been another
14:56one in my life recently eagle-eyed astute observer that i know you to be you'll have noticed this
15:04something not in the workshop so far something small sort of circular in shape i afford it it's neil
15:11neil isn't there and with good reason neil is 62 and think setting up the workshop is one thing
15:19overseeing it watching it grow gray but turning up every day with his lunch pail in his hand to
15:25clock off he's done that and now to keep his brain alive he's set up another workshop
15:33a little one at home this is his own business and i want to see it
15:41shop hello hello oh hello hello how are you wow blimey look at this welcome to green ace tower
16:00this is it this is my little workshop mate it's gorgeous yeah yeah but you've done interior design
16:04oh yeah it's good i've got all the stuff i use on there for doing that with and i've got anything
16:09to do with mechanical stuff in this area and then oh look at this look down there that's
16:14the matwork department that's the english wheel the guillotine the shop all down there and then
16:19all the paint slide is that side i think that's really brilliant yeah it's fantastic it's only
16:24taken 60 years mate i'm tough to bits and work coming in well yeah i've got i've got work this
16:30is where i wanted to get to working on the stuff you want to work on special cars it's special it's
16:35it's rare and this car's rare because it's the last but one ever made of m6 bmw it's cool isn't it
16:40it's just nice to work on stuff like that if i'm here to 10 o'clock a night it doesn't matter to me
16:44but if you're in a working environment where everybody wants to knock off like most people
16:47do five o'clock and that's where you add the old time sheets and that do you do time sheets here
16:52no well actually i don't need to i've got it i've got an app on my phone and i log in every minute of
16:56the day oh there it is asking me now what am i doing right neil i've got your meters running my
17:02meters spinning i'm going fish and chip friday will happen yep and i'll bring you a battered sausage
17:09see you soon tell our way go steady
17:14it'd be nice actually to go back in time to when richard and i first met when he used to come down
17:21to tram in and we'd have fish and chip friday and to be honest we weren't really talking about
17:25businesses back then and we were talking about cars i know he's got the smallest car but i think you
17:32have got to step away from it now and again and just try and live your life a bit but let the pressure
17:35running a business you never know i might actually get richard in your game to work on his e-top get
17:40some work out of him he'd like that there was a point when neil and i fired each other as i recall
17:45because i said i'm a terrible manager and you're unmanageable
17:49because that we neither of us were going to fit into those roles so neil's found his place
17:54his role is playing to his strengths i need to do the same
18:18the workshop is actually going well now thanks if we're honest in no small part to my stepping away
18:35a bit from day-to-day managing things but if we are going to secure the the high-end ultra rare jobs
18:43that i want to become a calling card of the smallest cog i need to go into full ambassadorial role that's
18:51my job now so i've been looking for opportunities and i think i've got one here friends of mine all
18:56ex-servicemen are involved in something amazing to raise money for the special forces club benevolent
19:03fund it's a charity thing but what they're doing is recreating lawrence of arabia's incredible trek
19:09in 1917 41 of them rode 685 miles on camels across the uncrossable from saudi to akbar in jordan
19:20i have volunteered to go and help for the last stretch as part of the support team but that gets
19:25me to jordan now the previous king of jordan was a massive petrolhead they knew him as the petrolhead
19:32king he didn't just collect cars only did collect cars he also raced them seriously and that ignited
19:38a sort of growing passion for classic cars in jordan well i'm going to be there helping the charity
19:45but i am an ambassador for the smallest cog put the two together and if i can turn what looks like a
19:50jolly albeit in aid of charity into a work trip that's a win-win
20:12front seat covers four nine five
20:14so debbie mcgee's lever interior absolutely disgusting i've looked at trimmers and they want
20:22fifteen to twenty thousand pound to retrim this car which is gonna wipe the whole budget out straight
20:27away um she needs brakes exhaust systems electrics and we're not going to be able to do it for that
20:34so i've had a little bit of a brainwave there's a place in germany at the make the seat covers carpets
20:41door cards it all comes as a kit i can get that for around three thousand pounds but we're gonna have
20:50to fit the interior ourself which we've never done i'm gonna order it and then i'm gonna get myself and
20:58matt to fit it it's a gamble but i think it'll pay off i really do
21:11here he is matt i've got you a present is it what we're thinking
21:36i don't know it depends what you're thinking oh where's it from germany
21:46debbie mcgee the lovely debbie mcgee's interior this is this is a whole interior yeah please be
21:53everything we need oh my christmas a blue carpet nice well the main thing is it's the right color
22:03yeah genuine german interior i think debbie's gonna be one happy lady
22:08i made the mistake of telling lewis about my imminent trip to jordan
22:21must remember never to tell lewis anything ever right just talk me through this again with social media
22:30we have to do abstract things we have to be out there to grow the business right so in your effort
22:37to publicize the smallest cog workshop yeah i have to ride a cab exactly
22:42good morning i'm daisy richard nice to meet you hi lewis nice to meet you nice to meet you
22:59i will reluctantly concede i can see some point to this if a shot of me on a camel that's what i
23:06secretly think come on come and meet her she's called soraya soraya soraya a cluster of stars
23:13it means in arabic i'm gonna die she doesn't like me we're going to pop richard onto soraya and let
23:20him have a go at moving her around himself and schooling her himself and then we're also going to
23:24um make sure that he has a chance to lie down on her because it's important he knows what it's like to
23:29lie down with a camel do you want me to reword that let's go hello yes i'm richard and yes that
23:41is a camel i'm here today to learn how to drive this wish me luck hello camel lovely perfect
23:51i have trapped a nut quite badly oh god oh there's a big lump at the back of the saddle it's
24:05hurting my buttocks this is fantastic this is great publicity this is great for the social media
24:12okay richard i'm going to let you loose i'm now you can have it you're now driving you can have a go
24:18left go left yeah go left go left pull more with your left brain oh no no go right go right
24:26um you know she's trying to eat the sticks yeah i think maybe you should stick to uh driving cars
24:41this is going to be the difficult bit now isn't it pulling up tight so we've unpacked debbie mcgee's
24:51lever interior uh we've got most of the interior in the car but we've left the trickiest bit to last
24:56which are the seats once we get these seats in um we get the car back to debbie as promised by richard
25:02on time and in budget so we've got to clip these overnight firmly yeah right so do we need to put
25:11sides on first i think so yeah oh it will stretch quite a lot down there if i pull that down and
25:21try and try and hook this side up and over that will go there that's it this is really tight
25:33so that's it yeah that's that's definitely yeah that's really tight i've only just got that on
25:39there look so it's a bit worrying this is not going to be strong enough isn't it yeah that stitching's
25:43coming away there isn't it
25:53might have ripped it oh you're joking oh bugger um
26:01i've got a friend not far down the road he does you know household seats and hopefully he might be
26:07able to just uh do a little repair for us and return this maybe he's got something stronger yeah
26:13that he'd suggest because it's under so much stress yeah we've got to do some yeah all right
26:18let me make call i'll be back all right we was hoping to get these seats finished today that's not
26:24going to happen now so it's not ideal at all these are the risks you take unfortunately
26:37all right matt what do you got for me we tried to fit these covers yeah and this stuff's kind of
26:42unstitching yeah we've obviously ripped these literally pulling too hard like so much pressure
26:48i can see that you've got to really give it some pull to get it on which is why you've pulled the
26:53stitching away there yeah we were like properly tucking on it well i'll have to take it off and
26:59restitch this cardboard back in and then i'll have to get some heat on the cover before i put it all back
27:04on yeah gives it the stretch um because without that heat that will probably just happen again does this
27:10mean you're going to fit this for us as well not just repair it yeah it does
27:13you're a lifesaver
27:29so
27:34so
27:38That's the...
27:50Yeah.
27:51That little nip and tuck there that makes all the difference.
27:55There's a door open.
27:57I arrived in Jordan last night.
27:59I'm here to raise the profile of the trek
28:02and hopefully some money for a good cause.
28:06But after a night in a freezing tent,
28:08I'm the one looking for charity.
28:11Chabs!
28:12There's really hot water knocking around.
28:15Still, mustn't complain.
28:17I'm just here for the tail end of the trek.
28:21And mercifully,
28:22turns out I don't actually have to ride a camel.
28:25I think you should book with another travel agent next year.
28:27I think so.
28:28Hang on, who says anything about next year?
28:38This is the sort of rhythm of the days on this trip.
28:42The camel team sets off.
28:44One of the cars will range ahead and find the route.
28:49Normally, I'd be in one of the defenders with one of the teams.
28:53But the king sent this for me to have a go on.
28:56It's fully electric.
28:59It's got a 500-kilometre range.
29:01And it's actually very good off-road.
29:06I've been invited to visit the museum in a man of all the king's cars.
29:12So you see I'm stepping closer to meeting the right people.
29:16Look, I agreed months ago that I would do this trek just as a supporter.
29:21But, you know, in the back of my mind,
29:23I thought all the time I might get to pick up some contacts for the business.
29:26That's how it works, isn't it?
29:38They appear to be about to go through customs.
29:44Yeah, it's customs.
29:45And they're on camels.
29:46Anything to declare.
29:48Just a powerful smell.
30:06Well done, palo.
30:07Well done.
30:08Well done, mate.
30:10Well done.
30:12I mean, these guys, 25 days of that, it has never been done, remember?
30:16Ever since Lawrence did it, nobody has ridden camels on that journey.
30:21It's pretty cool.
30:22And the town's gone berserk for it.
30:24It's fantastic.
30:25So the camel trek finished yesterday in Akbar, and it was fantastic.
30:49Then a journey here to Amman, where I am today, and it's down to business.
30:54I have had a few hasty conversations around the subject of cars here already.
30:59From what I understand, the sort of collectible classic car culture is growing, and the enthusiasm for it.
31:06So I'm looking to see if there are opportunities.
31:08Might even meet some owners.
31:10Jordan's love of classics started with the royal family.
31:14First stop, a museum dedicated to the royal collection.
31:19This should be good.
31:20Hello.
31:21Are you Ida?
31:23Richard.
31:24Nice to see you.
31:24How are you?
31:25Hi, nice to see you, too.
31:26It's good to have you here.
31:27I'm looking forward to seeing this.
31:30Ah, this is very lovely.
31:31Hello, how are you?
31:32Welcome to the museum.
31:38It's huge, you know?
31:39The museum uses cars to portray the history of Jordan and the royal family with the idea of what have these cars seen in their lifetime.
31:51This is an early Cadillac 1956 armored gift from President Eisenhower to King Hussein.
32:00Very interesting Range Rover.
32:02They were used for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's visit to Jordan in 1984.
32:09Now, we go into the vault.
32:16Any of these need any work?
32:18Yeah, some do.
32:19Some do.
32:20Oh, you have a card?
32:21Yeah, I don't know how you guessed.
32:22I just saw it.
32:23I see.
32:23Pray tell.
32:23Where shall we send them?
32:25Well, perhaps to, perhaps to Herofit.
32:27Okay, okay.
32:27Thank you very much.
32:28You're welcome.
32:29Smooth, Richard, smooth.
32:32Hopefully, next, I'm going to be whisked off to meet some classic owners.
32:39We've got the seats back from Oz.
32:56He's worked his magic, got it done, QuickTime as well.
32:59Where we had stripped it, he's re-stitched it all and made it all nice and tight again.
33:05Everything just seems to line up nicely now.
33:08You reckon this is going to fit?
33:13Yeah.
33:14It's not changed shape, is it?
33:17That's lovely.
33:19I think Debbie's going to be impressed with this, Matt.
33:21It's starting to look really good now.
33:23Yeah, it is, isn't it?
33:24I reckon we'll get the heat in there.
33:26Yeah.
33:26Shrink everything in.
33:28Make sure it's all nice and tight.
33:29And then just do our little final bit.
33:31We don't want to do too much physical adjustment on this right away.
33:37Well, what we've got to do now is get some heat into the leather.
33:40That will make it really nice and pliable so we can pull it around and then hopefully we'll get it all to line up.
33:47Right.
33:48Fingers crossed we don't get burnt.
33:51Pour the leather.
33:52Yeah.
33:53Amazing how much of a difference it makes on being able to flyable and move it around.
34:03Look at that.
34:04Yeah, look, you can really see where it's come really nice there.
34:07That's lining up lovely now.
34:09Yeah, look at that.
34:10That's really nice.
34:11I think that's been a...
34:15It's gone in an absolute treat.
34:17If we'd sent that to a trimmers, the budget would have been gone.
34:21Completely swallowed the whole lot up.
34:22So the gamble has paid off massively.
34:25Matt's just going to finish heating the areas now and then we will get it ready for a test drive.
34:43We're now approaching the Royal Automobile Club where we are meeting the car owners and collectors.
34:50Ida kindly put some feelers out to the city's classic car community and it looks like news of my international marketing mission has spread.
35:01Wow.
35:02How do you?
35:07Thank you very much.
35:08I'm pleased to meet you.
35:12Time to be bold.
35:14Come on, Hammond.
35:15Step up.
35:16If you happen to have a car in the UK ever, we run a classic car restoration.
35:21Oh, that's fair.
35:22It's an English car.
35:23There will be oil underneath it.
35:24If you're ever needing a bit of paint restoration fabrication, consider me.
35:28Jan, Richard, nice to see you.
35:31That is a very special car.
35:33Well, let me give you a business card or drop me a line.
35:37This is for you.
35:38Oh, that's exceptional.
35:40We're very honoured to meet you in our club.
35:43Oh.
35:43And you should come back again.
35:45Well, that is, that's fantastic.
35:47Thank you very much indeed.
35:49Well, as we're all here, I reckon we should, let's do some driving.
35:52Yes, let's do some driving.
35:53Let's go to the top.
36:01Right, we're off.
36:02So we're driving in a cavalcade, all of us.
36:05That's very cool.
36:06Do people do this often here?
36:07No, never.
36:08Never.
36:13Not on that, we look really cool.
36:20So did you guys talk about the workshop and the possibility for us to, in the future,
36:26deal with you?
36:27I'd love to, yes.
36:29Or maybe, what if one day I set up a workshop over here?
36:33I don't know how that will work.
36:34Yeah, that would be a very good idea.
36:35It's much needed here in Jordan.
36:43Obviously, I'm delighted because going anywhere in the world and finding people that share
36:50your passion, whatever it's for, is good.
36:53I've already chatted to quite a few people who are in the UK sometimes.
36:57Maybe one or other of them could rock up the Hereford one day.
37:00Now, this one's all done.
37:17Morning.
37:17Morning.
37:18Morning, you guys.
37:18Morning.
37:18Did you miss me?
37:19You missed me, didn't you?
37:21Trip was brilliant, thank you.
37:22Yes, I have done amazing ambassadorial work.
37:24So much so.
37:26Oh, yeah.
37:27Look at that.
37:28What's that?
37:28It's the Royal Automobile Club of Jordan, with compliments to Mr. Richard Hammond.
37:35Meanwhile, how are things here?
37:36Yeah, Debra's car's ready to go.
37:37The lovely Debra McGee's work is ready to go.
37:39All ready to go, yeah.
37:40Brilliant.
37:41I've got a bit of a plan.
37:42I want to take that back to her, but I think I should take Neil with me.
37:46Yeah.
37:47Because she really likes him, and she likes him, and he's there at the beginning of the job.
37:50I think he can show him more magic tricks if he wants to.
37:52Oh, God.
37:53Now we're going to do it.
37:54I've already told him I'm going to, so I'm going to go and get it.
37:56Yeah.
37:57Say hello to him for me.
37:58Mate!
38:18You all right?
38:18Nice to see you.
38:19Morning.
38:20Lovely day.
38:21Yeah, you up for a ride out?
38:22I am.
38:22You wore a hazmat suit last time you saw this car.
38:25That's right.
38:25I do remember.
38:26It was a drag-deliver swamp.
38:27We've been through it, so hopefully we're delivering her a nice working car again with an interior that you can survive.
38:35It's a bit of magic.
38:36Yeah, yeah.
38:37She liked that.
38:38There's going to be a lot of that today, isn't there?
38:39Right.
38:40Come on, then.
38:41Let's get it back.
38:42This is nice.
38:47A bit like the old days.
38:48I do miss the road trip.
38:51We've had a few experiences, haven't we?
38:52Oh, yeah.
38:53It's been up to the few cars.
38:55And hopefully this one will be well-received upon its return.
38:59Well, she'd be glad to see it back, wouldn't she?
39:00Because you love that car, didn't she?
39:02Yeah, it's that one that matters to her.
39:04It's memories.
39:04It's not just a car, you see, is it?
39:07Exactly.
39:12Rather than arrive with it on the trailer, why don't we stop somewhere around the corner from the house, take it off the trailer, and then drive it?
39:19Oh, that'd be a good idea.
39:20It looks like an old chum coming home, isn't it?
39:22Exactly.
39:23It's properly worth it.
39:24All right, OK, you're all good.
39:35Power on.
39:38That's a good sign.
39:39Would you see me back?
39:41You're OK, come back steady.
39:43Front wheel's good?
39:45Yeah.
39:47Perfect.
39:50Oh, she's like, you're choking me, Bobby Ewing.
39:52It's good, isn't it?
39:53Here we are, this is it.
40:00Yeah, last time we did this was in Monty's Rolls.
40:02Yeah.
40:03And we drove a car around that we'd done.
40:04And we had a big round of applause and loads of people waiting for us, and we're not going to get that today, I don't think, are we?
40:11Well, but we're going to get a very happy, lovely Debbie McGee.
40:14Wow!
40:14Hello, hello!
40:15Oh, my goodness.
40:17How are you?
40:18Oh, I'm, well, I'm a lot better now.
40:22I've seen my car, guys.
40:24Are you well?
40:24Lovely to see you.
40:25Oh, Richard, it looks fantastic.
40:26Lovely to see you.
40:27Oh, thank you.
40:28No foil as if it's necessary.
40:30No, no, no more.
40:31Hello, hello, you're back.
40:33And the key thing to know is with, you know, with what we had to spend on it, we have spent it, we could have thrown it all at the interior, we could have thrown it all at it mechanically, so we've hopefully found the right balance.
40:43We shall get out of your way, go and enjoy it in the sun.
40:45It works the same way it always did.
40:47Yeah, I've got to remember now.
40:53Bye, guys!
40:55That smile says it all, doesn't it?
40:57Yeah, that's what it is when it's got to be that car.
41:04Happy customer, that's a good feeling.
41:06And not just because she is the lovely Debbie McGee off the television, but also she is lovely and she loves that car.
41:14And it's just right on her.
41:16You could just see.
41:17I think we did the best we possibly could have done for the money.
41:19I'm really proud of what we turned out.
41:36Enter!
41:41You wanted to see me, boss?
41:43I did.
41:44You have just been summoned.
41:45Thank you for coming.
41:46You know where this is going.
41:47Yeah.
41:48Your social media campaign has resulted in me dressing as buttons.
41:53Yeah.
41:54Riding a frankly terrifying camel.
41:57Yeah.
41:57And driving my Land Rover dressed up to look like something that escaped a circus.
42:01What I want to know is.
42:02Yeah.
42:03Is it working?
42:04Am I...
42:04Why am...
42:05It is working.
42:06Is it?
42:06If I use the Land Rover day, for example.
42:09Yes.
42:10Our reach on that day, across that weekend that we put all our stuff out, was 317,000 people.
42:17And actually, we've got some work out of it as well.
42:20It is working and, I mean, I'll be honest with you, I don't know why you've not done this before.
42:26But, this is great.
42:29I concede it may be useful.
42:31Yep.
42:31Are we doing any more of these events?
42:34We are, actually.
42:35We're going to do more here.
42:36We're going to do more here.
42:36And the smallest call is going to Wembley.
42:39We're going to Wembley.
42:40Yeah.
42:40So, we've got some cool things coming.
42:44I'm not saying I'm glad to be dressed up as buttons and stuck on a camel.
42:49But, if it's going to be worth it and it is putting us in front of people and they do eventually feel compelled to bring their cars to us to work on, then it's good for the business and I'm happy.
43:00I'm going to view it as an experiment and I'm willing to continue, but not necessarily indefinitely.
43:04We shall see.
43:14That massive great Aston Martin and the owners, they want us to paint it pink.
43:19That's a lot of pink.
43:21Oh my God, what's wrong with you?
43:24Why are you doing that?
43:25Oh, Izzy, I hope you're okay, my darling.
43:28I really do.
43:29I bet you've never done something like this before.
43:31Well, no, I'm not a burglar.
43:32If I crash it now, am I insured?
43:35Uh, probably not, no.
43:36I'm not a burglar.
