00:00it's alive it's a steam engine oh yeah it's basically richard like a big macano set
00:16victory will be getting the signatures on my license need to move up for them that's all i'm
00:23gonna do oh god i'm gonna kill the car after four roller coaster years in the classic car restoration
00:33business that worked i'm gonna claim my thought of everything it seems i've finally cracked it
00:38happy customer that's a good feeling we've dragged out the art department you're gonna get your asses
00:44over here damn quick into the 21st century our reach on that day was 317 000 people and as
00:52brand ambassador if you happen to have a car in the uk i'm leading the charge hey this is brilliant
01:01at least that's what i thought if you've over promised you can't under deliver until my mum
01:09arrived they won't listen to me they'll listen to me and it turns out that once again i'm in deep
01:15trouble i'm gonna have to do something i'm gonna have to do something big oh my god
01:36big day today yeah i know i've said that before but this one really is because the company is getting
01:42bigger two new starters today joining us matt on mechanics and john on bodywork and that's
01:50significant i've been told a million times by a million different people that i've got to grow
01:56the team for this business to survive we've got to spend more money to make enough money to cover the
02:00overheads and this is the start of it it finally feels like maybe we're getting serious at last
02:12all right time to inspect the newbies
02:19chaps good to see you finally here i know you're settling in
02:23matt you're starting on the condor yeah yeah i believe so okay and john you're kicking on with
02:28that lotus that's right i've got the joy and he's showing you the ropes and where everything is
02:32like most of the cattle i know i'm on it it's his favorite tool thank you
02:36all right should we crack on then so yeah john you'll basically spend most of your time in the
02:43spray booth that's my yeah matt mechanical over there for you this here is a dead zone on the
02:48cameras don't ask how i know but it is all right but just remember h is watching so don't stand where
02:55you are basically right here and it stops there okay right all right all right i won't tell no
03:02one if you don't next stop the toilets there's no obviously cameras in there so that is a resting
03:08area as well if you want to but keep that as clean as possible because eileen yeah richard's mum checks
03:15on us all the time so if i was you yeah i'd probably go before you come in in the morning
03:20so any any questions from that more crammed i think so no no you're okay yeah yeah yeah
03:37work can start properly today on the condor the one-of-a-kind racing gt car prototype that i
03:45went to look at a while ago was built back in the 60s by brian wingfield who was a legendary ford
03:54engineer stroke designer the car is now owned by his daughter kate we couldn't start on the
04:00mechanical work before because we needed the skills in the workshop we have now with matt
04:04the bodywork and paint and stuff are done the mechanical work is going to be next level first job
04:11probably will be getting a new engine fitted into it for the first time which is going to be a
04:17challenge what they need is me to inspire lead generally irritated i'm going to go and do that now
04:26so gentlemen this is it the condor has landed yeah how are we feeling yeah we're just going through it
04:33now going through the estimate um there's only one ever been made and it's our job to get it back
04:40up running and together man we did promise when we had that initial conversation mate if you join us
04:45you get to work on unusual stuff what's more unusual than the one of one off i assume there's a
04:51comprehensive workshop manual yeah yeah no there is nothing there's nothing there is literally and
04:57actually this is going to be quite the challenge are you always calm with a new job because we don't know
05:01you yet pretty much yeah stay calm right do each little task at a time it's not the way we operate
05:07oh is it not no we like a massive panic running around just doing anything then don't do anything
05:14for a bit and then panic because the deadline's coming at you you've only got to basically do
05:17what probably has never been done before oh okay so that's okay i mean essentially it comes down to
05:23engines got to go in yeah be hooked up it may or may not have been in before we're not sure
05:28okay okay it's got to be finished it's got to be turned into a car right good luck
05:41that's clear oh my god we're clear oh we're clear
05:44she's all right look at that there's nothing left now i'm just reading up on the condor to be honest
05:56i've never heard of it i've heard of brian wingfield he's a bit of a legend in british motorsport it
06:03seems like it was a bit of a labor of love for him but it never quite got finished so we've been tasked to
06:09finish the work of probably one of the best designers in british motorsport history so no
06:15pressure i don't think i've ever worked on a one-off car before at all i worked on a few that probably
06:20should have been made once and then binned off but not one like this and there's literally two pages
06:27of information on it on the on the internet it's going to be a lot of thinking on our feet putting our
06:32heads together see if we can get it finished hopefully we can that in there is actually quite
06:48a rare car lotus europa that didn't make many that's even more rare because it's the last one
06:54ever made the client commissioned us to conduct a complete restoration of it about a year ago and
07:01every week we thought right have we got anybody we can get on the lotus no we can't so now from
07:08today having john in there on the body of it is just that's what i should have done all along there's
07:14no increase in the overheads of the building it's the same building but with more work and
07:17more money being generated in it i'm finally getting it this feels good
07:21for a long time i've actually wanted to work here um the quality of the cars to be here at
07:28the smallest cog doing them especially for richard it's just sort of once in a lifetime my dream job
07:34really i can't quite believe that we're doing this car i'm really looking forward to getting the paint
07:39on it especially with me in silver because there really wasn't very many done in that color there's
07:44not many people that really enjoy working on fiberglass but i like the challenge
07:51so it wasn't that long ago that well i was influenced by hadrian like an idiot and allowed
08:06him to persuade me to buy a stanley steam car that's like 105 year old steam powered car and then we set
08:15about getting it going and who knew trying to get a 105 year old basically mobile pressure cooker
08:21working is a bit complicated h it's on fire yeah that is likely for flash that is don't leave me
08:29here yeah i mean there was there was fire but we did eventually get it going um but then since then
08:36because hadrian's been so kindly helping me out with the workshop itself time has been a bit sure for
08:41him to work on the steam car but now we've got the new recruits in he's got a bit more time to get back to
08:47it which is good because i don't want it to stall and be another languishing project so i want it to
08:53work we're gonna get there right h has told me the first thing we've got to get sorted is the car's
09:02boiler and today is mission critical because the inspector's coming in hello h all right how's it going
09:10very well and you yeah good come to have a look at the stanley haven't we yeah here's the patient
09:15pulled the top and bottom off it so you can have a good look at it alan get the old thickness tester on
09:20yeah we've had a lot of leaks on the valves you know and i think it's a combination of the fact that
09:26the damn things have dried out and been stood a long time i've been stood a long time yeah
09:32i've been looking forward to this day and now i'm dreading it well it is a bit of a worry yeah yeah this
09:37is the vet come to tell me if my old pet has exactly what it is don't say that alan hello hello
09:43hello mate hello right so what happens now well we're going to have a look at the uh thickness on
09:47the top of the plate this is ultrasonic testing okay so we're just going to test test just in a couple
09:52of places to see what the thickness of the top plate is and then we'll have a look at the bottom one
09:57so the book that's that's the boiler in there that's the boiler wire wire and boiler and what you're
10:01doing is i'm just checking the thickness of the plates so it's not going to explode yeah are you the
10:05man who stops it exploding well i won't stop it exploding but we'll have a look at it what he's
10:09going to do now is he going to tell you actually what the condition of the boiler is yeah we're 5.3
10:14on the top i think but that would originally have been six mil so it's down a bit on that where's it
10:18gone just it's just worn away corrosion is it is it pregnant we're down to three mil on the bottom
10:26on the bottom of the boiler so i think i think that's it really we can't do much else with that at the
10:34moment wait what yeah it's the end of that boiler the end of its life it happens sadly
10:43why is it cheering it looks look sad well i can't really because it's just one of those things isn't
10:48it that's one of my things i know it is i know but i know it's a shame really you made me buy a lemon
10:56no i mean there was the potential there that you'd have to have a boiler we did we did have that caveat
11:00so yeah but i didn't listen to that bit love steam cars it's a brilliant idea this
11:05anything else want me want me to buy it's a consumable item let's buy a chocolate teapot
11:09a chocolate well that's it that's it we can't do much else but i'll get some prices for the boiler
11:15yeah then you know where you are oh i know where i am h you owe me a pint
11:21i thought that was coming i'm going now all right cheers over here thank you i think he took that
11:28quite well i think he did i think he was very happy about that yeah for all my bleating to h i'm not
11:33turning my back on this really lovable car i'm determined to get it back on the road that's good
11:40so what i've done is is uh commit myself to a steam car with the broken boiler but you have to be an expert
11:47to work out what's the most important thing in the steam car it's the bit that makes steam the
11:50boiler and once again i'm in on the car i've spent money on the car and i'm going to spend more money
11:58to get it working hello does that remind you of anything
12:03you've got a bit of an issue here because um seems our original engine mount isn't gonna
12:19match up with our engine mount holes well i'll go to h's and see if i can actually get some
12:24some made up a bit quick so don't hold us up awesome all right thanks mate
12:27working with matt now actually working alongside him he makes a hell of a difference he's got a bit
12:35more experience than me so i can feed off him the one thing i've been missing since dad left is that
12:39communication of not being scared to ask somebody and that's coming back now
12:46has progressed with the mystery machine matt i regretting working here just saying
12:51it's um it's different you're just in time actually because we're ready to put that back in
12:57right so you can actually drive the crane if you want and we can drive the crane and hopefully not
13:01destroy it forward as you are i think at the moment and we're aiming for the center as much as possible
13:11okay i'm releasing gently down if we get the clutch just under that okay okay that's probably it happy
13:21yeah yeah come on girl you need to turn the engine over thank you very much okay if i hold a bit of
13:30pressure on this is effectively a heart transplant it's a fiddly business oh she's going now she's going
13:39there she goes she's going moment of truth and then we can lower the jack down go on if you're
13:45ready ready lowering slowly now okay my side oh yes that's in there you go that is now part of the car
13:59she is now there you go there you go that's a significant moment that's a nice feeling
14:06i mean i'm not going to get carried away but it's in well done chaps big progress yeah
14:15i must admit i did feel rather bad about richard steam car boiler and i do think there is a good
14:28way around it that's not gonna cost the earth and take months and months and months and months we're
14:36going to reuse the actual outer tube of of the existing boiler and just we'll machine off the ends
14:43and then put new ends in and then re-tube that so technically that's a repair
14:54while h tries to resurrect the boiler the rest of the car has been sent down to somerset to a specialist
15:00in vintage leather i'm really hoping the original 105 year old seats can be saved
15:07this whole steam car experience is i'm loving it because it's opening up all these specialized
15:14skills and crafts and i'm desperately keen to preserve the original leather wherever i can
15:20rather than replace it
15:25hello richard rich hello thanks for letting me come along for a nose about i'm intrigued and there it is it is
15:32so how are we getting on uh right we'll go have a look at the cushions first right i'll follow you
15:40uh it's paul the machinist hello paul the machinist i'm richard sorry don't let me
15:44interrupt oh mate this is exactly what i thought it would be yeah smells of leather as well yeah
15:50is that off mine that is off yours wow as you see these are split so i've managed to patch a couple of
15:55them trying to keep as much of the original leather as possible which is the whole point and then we're
15:59going to replace this panel here because unfortunately the rips were too close to the seam that's where
16:07that came from with a piping around the edge i've got a hide of leather here which is new leather but it
16:15looks old okay that's for the piping yep we just make sure we've got it long enough
16:25this is to glue the piping cord inside the leather
16:36basically giving a little pull on the leather as you go along
16:44piping to that now we've got that done it goes over to the sewing machine paul up you're up the sewing
16:52department is now busy
17:14yeah and just see what it's like
17:18look at that that's fantastic that's really really amazing to see i am deeply impressed paula
17:28thank you have you been doing this a while about 45 years i think so no stick with it i reckon you'll
17:34get the hang of it you really have saved that yeah it is an unbelievably good match
17:44can i go see the rest of the leather in the car yep
17:53wow so we're giving it a feed yeah so it softened it a little it has brought it back to life it was
18:01sort of dead absolutely yeah like cardboard yeah so you'll have a few more coats before it comes back to
18:08you yeah but at the end of the job we will have a 100 year old car with largely in fact almost entirely
18:13100 year old leather interior it's still there just the odd repair right thank you so much for letting
18:18me see what you do and see the progress and i'll leave you to your good work brilliant thank you thank
18:24you good for richard to come down to to see that there are places that these this trade still goes on i've
18:32been doing this now for 27 years learned from your grandfather you've got to put a bit of love bit of
18:38care bit of effort into the job to get it looking how it was done when the steam car was brand new 105
18:45years ago i love that there's somebody doing something exactly the way it was done 100 years ago and
18:50that's the only way to save those seats it needs somebody who knew well who knows how they were built in
18:54the first place to do it again that's doing its job and the electric thing moves but it's not um
19:12i'm locking the door so you're saying you're locked out of the office again yeah do you want this no
19:19have you lost the key no it's a digital lock it just stopped working haven't you already broken
19:26into the door once already when you first put the lock on yeah first day i had to break into it
19:29would you like me to cough cough yay anyway
19:40well there's nothing like being thrown into the deep end for my first repaint at the cog
19:44i've got a beautiful lotus europa unfortunately for me it's made out of fiberglass which is much
19:50harder to work on because when the materials are laminated it tends to trap air underneath which
19:58creates air pockets so it makes pinholes basically so obviously you need to make sure that they're all
20:04filled and it's obviously when you paint over the top of them it'll look horrendous basically spent
20:08a whole day just going over each individual panel to make sure that i hadn't missed anything
20:14especially with this being my first job obviously i've got uh big boots to fill so hopefully
20:19everything will run nice and smoothly for me the job will turn out lovely the customer will be really
20:24happy and we'll refuse to do one again right here we go
20:44all right how's your first respray spot on mate enjoyed it what's your uh opinion working with
20:59fiberglass treat it the same as metal but um obviously there's a lot more work that has to go
21:05into getting the reshaping and all that because you know yes most painters don't like working with
21:12it so what's your real opinion um it's crap to be honest with you you don't want me to get another
21:18one no but not for at least six months anyways i haven't given him the easiest job in the world
21:22for his first respray but he looks like he's done a cracking job this job clearly means a lot to him
21:28i think we got the right member of staff there you know we want someone with passion they're keen
21:33and they will go that extra mile for the customer and that's what we need
21:44this is some of the paperwork associated with the condor that unique one-off car downstairs that
21:55we're hoping to build up and finish for mark and kate they're coming in today we've actually asked
22:01them to come in because i'm worried we're burning through their budget it's her father who built it
22:06brian it's it's in his memory and if we can finish the condor kate wants to fulfill her father's
22:13ambition and take it to classic car race events so i think we need to have a properly grown-up
22:18conversation about why it's burning through money and that's simple really it's unique everything
22:25takes time behind the ranger yeah what this one here no no no that's a range rover the ranger
22:34hello hello welcome nice to see you how are you how you been good yeah how are you
22:40around us we did in remote herefordshire yeah hi richard your car is lurking around here
22:46this is quite a critical conversation now because we've reached a point where there are going to
22:50be decisions needing to be made so we figured come in and let's talk it through yeah do you want to
22:54see the sort of things that we've rectified so far a lot of them are to do with how big it is and
23:00how small the space is yeah so positioning for one is that you've got hardly any clearance here
23:06if you move it this way a bit it's too close to that radiator if you look where the
23:11the outlet is on the bottom it's right in line with where that steering column bracket is
23:16so we're gonna that's gonna have to step around and then come up either that or we move the position
23:22on the radiator but brian when he was alive and still reasonably compass mentis
23:28he went through a hell of a lot of this how he wanted the car finished i think he half had in
23:34mind that him and i would do it together but obviously that didn't happen yeah the dementia
23:40set in and that wasn't to be but it would be lovely to hear it run because it might have been
23:45well for 40 odd years since it has run right
23:5940 years and she's running it runs so it makes the right noise it does oh really emotional i love
24:14that noise anyway that that big v power i grew up hearing that engine that's an engine that's
24:22unique to this car um really important and yeah really emotional really emotional and i saw mark
24:30well up and it was like oh don't i'm gonna go i know brian you know kate's dad father-in-law would
24:37have been pleased with what's been done and the standard it's been done to as well brought a lump
24:42to my throat hearing it run just where we are at the moment so like with the fuel lines and stuff
24:47obviously pop the doors they're 90 dead brake pipes you can see where the time's gone you
24:53suddenly get to engine test and fit it and suddenly you end up yeah yeah yeah it's a work
24:59to do it so the alarming result is we are fast burning through your budget and that's why we
25:04want to talk now and say hang on a minute with something like this it's so hard because we've
25:11never done one before because nobody else has ever done one before they've got some decisions to
25:15make about how do they preserve the value in it all of the memory of the man who built it but not
25:19break themselves doing it but nor do they end up going down a cul-de-sac where they haven't done
25:24enough spent enough and then they've spoiled it it's tricky complicated if i'm honest no shocks
25:31it's expensive time is money we're realistic so we're gonna have to dig a bit deeper um and let the
25:38guys carry on and finish it not an easy job
25:45so what painfully early start this morning but for a good reason as the final thing i have to do
26:00to gain enough signatures on my race license to qualify to race at silverstone which is what i've
26:05been working at um i have to do a day's marshalling at a vintage sports car club event and there's one
26:12today at prescott so i'm not racing but i'm going racing to wave flags around and well i don't
26:20actually know it would be quite interesting to find out what marshals do to make it a bit more fun
26:25i've persuaded my mate les to come along and join me and i'm being very self-sufficient because i'm
26:30making lunch cheese sandwich now is les a mustard man or a pickle man must i'm gonna say pickle oh that's too
26:42too fancy like mustard what a creation
26:55right is that for marshalling thank you
27:06a pound you keep animals in a pound yeah well you're going to be in there all day today
27:17right um name's hammond do we put these on over our clothes we just put them on where do i go and put
27:24these on go in there les has come down very kindly to help me out he absolutely loves prescott on all
27:31the cars here i have a feeling zog's gonna turn up later today as well i think he'll want to laugh
27:36at me my orange overalls having to work when he's having a nice fun day off that's the theme of the
27:40day i have to do stuff in an official capacity to get the signature on my license and they don't
27:46hello boss nice to see you i'm paul hickman i'm the post chief today richard and les you're very
27:53welcome the main thing is eyes open all the time looking that way down the track apart from the
28:01red flag man who's looking that way so when something happens we get out there we deal with it
28:07today's event is a vintage hill climb it might look like a bit of sunday fun but these cars some
28:14over a hundred years old are very much racing up the famous prescott hill
28:19it can be dangerous and so it's the job of marshals to help keep drivers and public safe
28:27first one here comes here comes first custom
28:33all right also seven oldster mr patrick teague giving it berries there you go well yes
28:38we noticed the particularly masterful way in which the red flag was deployed
28:55i have control of the situation and i can keep it up as long as i need to really that's good for you yeah
29:00do we need to check the fluid okay can we see you check yeah yeah absolutely oh do something
29:08is this recent it's a bit no you're not supposed to they said don't do it with your fingers did they
29:13yeah why well because it's acid or something well done that was good it's good it was only done really
29:19to get you out there and you know the exercise is welcome you're bursting out of your overalls
29:25i know you want me to zip them back up again and force myself back in it's nice to god it's like
29:32living with a wife it's like somebody zipping a hippo into a snake costume
29:39thank you very much enjoy the rest of your day thank you toodle pip this is a particularly fine
29:46event which it has to do the marshalling to get the points on his license so he can drive bigger more
29:51manly cars than he's been driving so far and i should think he's full-on today so i would
29:57imagine he's probably quite a scratchy little fluff cut by now i was in a state of total alertness to
30:03cars dropping fluids on track you were actually total folks hey hello you found us um are you allowed
30:09it's leading marshals right here are you allowed in the marshals but you've been seen waving flags
30:14come join us yes we've done it i did check with our post chief um who's an ex police officer
30:21and we do have authority oh a bit of authority you love that though don't you oh no i've never had
30:26any uh there was a point boy chaps we can get you back on post el capitan yeah right i'll come with
30:33you boss we'll wave at you with a glass in hand yes nice please don't have a nice afternoon all the
30:42best pims it is while zog and les swan off to corporate vintage cars my next job is to help
30:50the marshals on the start line richard nice to see you i'm now your newbie this is all a bit more
30:59technical concentrate hammond the idea is we want three blue lights there's a yellow warning light
31:07will come on if he goes too far she'll drop it back there that's perfect right and so then it sits
31:13on the chop right so our job get hold of the wheel and literally wheel it to the line what signals him
31:19to stop green light
31:20right so that's now held on the chop
31:37so look at that it's just to work about and the steering components they've they've bent those
31:42around they've machined them first forged them afterwards i absolutely love phrase and ashes
31:46what a beautiful thing well obviously you understand these things a little bit better than i do beautiful
31:50what's model is that i think it's a riley nine engine with a supercharger i saw your little
31:55video online the other day getting your car ready so good luck mr les follows you on facebook
32:02poor bastard you get out more often yeah i can't i can't get out right so tell me when to chop it in
32:08right
32:13right so yeah knock it out back there then look at that line
32:19wriggle it a bit yeah get it in now get it in now
32:23thank you very much you are clear to stand down now yes stand down marshals team well done thank
32:31you very much for welcoming me right i'm gonna get this side this i believe is the final signature i
32:36need done congratulations thank you sir thank you very much indeed thank you all for your help appreciate
32:41that i enjoyed it i got rather carried away with the idea of collecting the signatures and now i've
32:46realized great i can go and race at silverstone in a really big race oh god did you have a nice time
32:52looking at the car amazing time i just came along for the beer and we've had a lovely wander around the
32:57paddock well why don't we go and discuss this over a cooling glass of something lovely now which way do we
33:03go and which way up that way up that way right let's do it okay chaps once more unto the breach
33:09the amount of people that come up to les and his knowledge i have to say
33:15he knows nothing else only about old cars and sheep yes
33:33hadrian's been hard at it a new steam boiler would cost north of 10k
33:41so i'm crossing my fingers he can work his magic
33:45so this is the uh inside of the boiler and you can see we've machined out the top and bottom
33:51we've been busy making new plates for this so we've lasered them out machined all the holes so now
33:58we've got it that the plates are tacked in and we're just about ready to weld the ends back in the
34:03boiler and it's not just a normal world because it's a pressure vessel so therefore we've brought
34:08in a specialist who only does that and um today is the moment of truth
34:17this guy that's coming is like a superhero welder is well he's yeah he's um he's probably the most
34:23coded welder in the shire and that's good yeah that's very good yeah does he have like a title
34:31senior senior hello richard hello ad hello you're is adrian adrian right hi how you doing i'm fine
34:38thank you certainly be able to reach the high wells won't you that won't be a problem yeah that helps
34:42a lot so are you ready for this today yes i prepare all of the whole week are you nervous
34:47a bit really oh yeah always so there's many ways how you can literally fail yeah and you have to
34:54you have to take a lot of precautions you have to focus on that you have to be precise so you're not
35:00going to know the result still is going to be finished and tested so um you've got everything you
35:05need i won't be in the way i will stand off and let you do it so carry on you're not going to offer any
35:11advice on this occasion no i think he knows more about welding than even i do just don't step in
35:18there will all the other guys salute him when he walks in
35:24i'm not bringing it up too much when i say this is mission critical because everything he's doing
35:27over there right now is about making sure that my steam car doesn't explode literally because that
35:35that is the heart of the thing that pressure vessel if that goes it's a it's a bad bad day
35:41and then i'm buying a new boiler which is going to delay it by months and cost a fortune
35:49i'm scared to ask how's it going how's it gone uh we're nearly there we just have to bring those
36:08two ends to meet together uh we've done more than 99 probably percent of the circumference just be
36:14careful it's really hot are you happy with it more likely yes um we got fairly good
36:19penetration were you anxious when you did it it it's always stressful right well done thank you
36:25that is a lifesaver that is the difference between that car working ever again and not
36:30thank you adrian i'll leave it to finish it up right h thank you we'll leave him to his work
36:34let's crack on that's good though isn't it i mean that is the difference between
36:37success and failure yeah where are we on costs with that well richard you can't put the price on
36:45happiness yeah but but somebody's going to aren't they now h didn't you say it'd be ready for the
36:50end of summer ah yes but i didn't say which summer did i
37:05to honor her father's intentions for the condor the owner kate wants it to appear on race tracks
37:10like goodwood and le mans that means it'll have to be engineered to modern standards the problem is
37:16the car was designed in the 1960s and i'm really worried about how much more work that will involve
37:24i need some specialist advice fortunately i know just the person okay are we ready to ship it off yeah
37:32up the m6 to rick then hey that's the thing rich has learned honey if you're not sure get a second
37:37opinion that's it rick is the racing man dodge the drips
37:50handbrake off let's go
37:59ciao
37:59it does make sense for it to go to rick we're not experts on race cars so we're not really sure
38:22of how long it's going to take and the costs involved so rick's the man for this
38:32rick has been building race cars especially fords for over 30 years i've asked for a detailed
38:39condition report
38:50in here we've got what is left of a wiring loom
38:54this is just a fire waiting to happen all needs changing
39:00that steering column is a rusty tube with a rusty column
39:04with some weld around it um and you wouldn't do it that way nowadays you can't have steering columns
39:11failing the other bit i think needs attention is the bump steer on it and the geometry and this front
39:19wishbone and what i mean by that is as their wheels are going over bumps instead of them tracking evenly
39:26when they go like that as they go over bumps they need to go up and down together
39:31they tend to go like that as they go up and down over bumps so that needs fixing everything needs
39:37doing the brake system the fuel system the suspension the geometry to be honest there's not
39:44anything in this car that doesn't need doing but it is what it is and it deserves doing properly
39:49it's their decision but it's going to be a big one good afternoon richard how are you
40:02i'm all right how are you yeah okay um you know i'm calling about the condor which you've got have
40:07you had the chance to have a look at it yes we have what are the big headline issues with it the ones
40:13that are going to take the time to swallow the budget for me uh bits missing uh just make a fuel
40:18tank just do a fuel system and i've seen it all before it was kind of done as a concept car but then
40:25never quite finished off and i'm sure he drove it but like it it wouldn't be safe to drive it nowadays
40:32so it kind of needs just a bit of love and re-engineering it's going to take time it just
40:39takes ages brutally is there 18 grand going to get anywhere near it
40:43uh no no i kind of got down around 30 grand yeah plus parts and i bet there's 18 to 20 grand of the
40:54parts yeah i kind of feared that was going to be the case it's um yeah it needs some love okay i'm
41:02gonna have to have a word of nothing um okay okay cheers rick take care mate take care mate bye
41:07that's not a big surprise and i totally take rick's word for that and he was saying it there and i did
41:14hear it hang on a minute he's seen it all before because of course it's race cars run-offs they've
41:20been built once somebody's built this race car they're nearly always unique and it would be
41:27dishonest disloyal remiss of me to carry on with that car telling them there was a chance in hell i was
41:34ever going to do it for their budget and if rick can't nobody can it's a real shame not to be able
41:48to finish the condor he's actually got quite attached to it spending pretty much eight hours a day
41:54toiling away trying to find parts or solutions to stuff it was great to play just a small part in
42:01getting it finished and hopefully that does happen sometime in the near future
42:06but nothing stops in the workshop moving on now i'm working on the lotus europa which the
42:12lads have already started so i better crack on
42:18jamie i'm sure you like me are immensely relieved to see that europa lotus in paint at last long last
42:26but more importantly that was john's first proper job for us yeah so come on then maestro what do you
42:31think it looks pretty good to be honest i think he was a bit nervous well you're not going to over
42:35do what is it with painters i'm asking one painter to say something nice they never do no no honestly
42:42yeah it's turned out well really happy yeah yeah happy with that yeah so with him having done the paint
42:46that's great it's now handed over to matt yeah also a new boy how's it getting on superb really yeah
42:53absolutely brilliant and the good thing about matt as well if he hasn't worked on somewhere he goes
42:57trying the internet he'll get books and he knows exactly what to do the two lads we've got that
43:02couldn't wish for anyone better they don't stop it's a bit like a workshop it's a proper workshop now
43:07blimey mate so it's going good let's not get carried away because i've done that before yes it's
43:13all working all the wheels have come off and i'm ruined so let's just hope they do all seem happy
43:18have i come to the right workshop i'm scared i'm gonna be killed under the world's smallest car
43:28to get it on the road good god is that just to get it road legal yes
43:35what the was that oh we're broken i don't want you to look at that
43:40you're really nervous aren't you i am quite scared oh
