Transcript
00:00This is Tim Wasberg from Festtrek.
00:28I'm here in Toronto, Ontario for the Toronto International Film Festival.
00:33Our goal is the ending fight.
00:36Why this movie is called Furious?
00:39Because everybody has a different background.
00:41But anyway, five guys get together and fight with everybody's background story.
00:52So everybody's angry, everybody's furious.
00:55Why this movie is furious?
00:59Because this time we are very lucky to find these lovely actors.
01:05And not the real actors.
01:08The actors shoot and fight.
01:10It doesn't look like, oh, just learn this choreograph.
01:15Just learn this martial arts 30 minutes before shooting.
01:20Not like this, right?
01:21Yeah, yeah.
01:22Because everybody has their martial arts wise, maybe 20 years, 30 years experience with each history.
01:32And, you know, all those years, the dedication to the action cinema.
01:37So we are very lucky to have them.
01:40And then, I'm just like the fun boy.
01:44Oh, Joe Tasu.
01:46Of the female.
01:48Yeah, yeah.
01:49Enjoy.
01:50But everybody has their own style.
01:52Yes, that's very, very important.
01:54Because every character is a kung fu movie or actually a martial arts movie.
01:58Everybody has, should have the one, one different style of the martial arts.
02:03Okay.
02:04That's the, that's a very, um, traditional, uh, practicalization.
02:08Yeah.
02:09So this time, okay.
02:10Judo.
02:11Yeah.
02:12Judo.
02:13And sirak.
02:14And kung fu.
02:15Yeah.
02:16Sweet kung fu.
02:17Yeah.
02:18Sweet kung fu.
02:19And maybe the mixed martial arts.
02:20Yeah.
02:21Like mixed martial arts.
02:22Yeah.
02:23And there's a strong background about the karate.
02:24Okay.
02:25But, but, she, she, she, uh, let him kick.
02:29Because, you know, uh, the recently, many action movies, uh, is a, uh, cross combat.
02:34Yeah.
02:35The most, the most of the action movies just, just play the cross combat.
02:39But how many kick fighters in the, in the action movie recently?
02:44Yeah.
02:45And seventies and eighties, a lot of kicker.
02:47Yeah.
02:48And main villain should kick.
02:50Yeah.
02:51Yeah.
02:52Should, should show the high kick.
02:53So this time, uh, I don't know this is, uh, we called it.
02:57It's a big one or not, but I don't care.
02:59Just bring the kick.
03:00I think, first of all, this, this character, there are some, uh,残疾的因素.
03:04He cannot say.
03:05And then, his head is very complicated.
03:07And then, uh, he is, uh, uh, a, uh, a, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, um, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh.
03:14and not健全的人
03:44I think the chemistry started that when we, our characters somehow, we fought with, I
03:55think you've seen the movie, so the fighting that we did, and after we realized, the both
03:59characters realized that we're looking at, and we're going on the same thing, and I'm
04:03looking for my wife, and she's looking for his daughter, and at the same time, the chemistry
04:07happened somehow slowly, because they're going to the same direction, and then at the same
04:13time, I think now Vin also have the second goal is to save those kids, which he promised
04:19his wife, and then that's, they've both been doing that for so long, so somehow it's the
04:25intertwining missions of them becomes a very good buddy movie somehow, because, and then
04:33they just realized they have to work together to achieve a safe goal, and then, and of course
04:40this narrative, because, one way, cannot really express verbally, the character cannot express
04:45verbally, is that not Vin somehow, for the audience, for audience, point of the audience
04:50needs to carry the narrative, for the audience to understand that they're both going to the
04:54same goal.
04:55Kenji and I talked about it, we didn't want the bad guy to be like, you know, just a bad
04:59guy, we still wanted him to lose something, and have his own type of justice.
05:06And I think, my character's just on the wrong track of what's right and what's wrong, because
05:12everything that I'm doing is right, in my perspective.
05:16Everything is for family, everything was for my father to build his empire, everything was
05:21for my wife and the kid that's coming.
05:25And, for like the fight scenes, my character, he's a kicker, but he chooses not to punch,
05:33you know what I'm saying?
05:34Like, it's not that he can't throw punches, he knows how to throw punches, but he chooses
05:38to kick because he's so furious, mad, you know, because he's so mad, he wants to knock
05:43him out in every single hit.
05:46And, like, you'll see me use a knife, I can still punch, but I choose to kick.
05:51I feel like that's where the character development and the emotion kind of adds on to the action
06:00and the story in the background.
06:30With this role, when Kenji first approached me, he said that this role, it was written
06:36for you, you know?
06:37And just reading the script, well, first, I'm extremely honored.
06:40I've been a fan of Kenji's for a long time.
06:43And when I first read the script, actually, I was thinking, damn, this is actually unchartered
06:51territory.
06:52Like, I've never played a role like this, and how would I go about this?
06:55You know, so during the process, what I really enjoyed was that I had to really understand
07:03what it meant to be a kid again, and understand what it meant to have no sense of responsibility,
07:10so that I can bring that onto the screen, you know?
07:12And they say that the subconscious mind cannot differentiate between our thoughts and what's
07:19here in physical reality.
07:22So through a lot of, like, meditation exercises, I was able to tap into a part of myself that
07:27I haven't tapped into in a long time, which is being a kid, you know?
07:30And also just being in, like, a different country in Thailand, and literally having no sense
07:34of responsibility except to be on set and to play the role that I played, you know, that
07:40definitely helped me.
07:41And then just building up to the character, I just did the best that I could in that state,
07:49yeah.
07:50Did you give a few specific directions?
07:51Oh, of course, yeah.
07:52Of course.
07:53We're not talking just action, because obviously that's...
07:55Yeah.
07:56Of course, yeah.
07:57During the process, me and Kenji spoke a lot, actually.
07:59I think Kenji has very good sensibilities on character building, which also leads up to
08:05the action.
08:06And also, I'm a fan of the genre, and Kenji's stated he's a fanboy.
08:11So, a lot of the inspirations, I believe we were always on the same page, on the same
08:15frequency when it came to pulling inspirations from different films, different ideas.
08:21So, working with Kenji was amazing in finding the character, too.
08:28So, we're going to be awesome.
08:31Really?
08:33Bye, bye.
08:35Bye bye.
08:36Bye bye.
08:37Bye bye.
08:38Bye bye.
08:39Bye bye.
08:52Bye bye.
