00:00I've always felt like there's some people
00:29who kind of need to be handheld in a way
00:32to see a perspective.
00:33And there are people who are eager to see the perspective,
00:37which is why I think it's great to have villains
00:41or bad guys, so to speak, who are more full
00:44and more, every villain thinks they're the hero
00:48in their own story, right?
00:49And that's why I think some of the best movies
00:51have a dynamic and layered antagonists.
00:57You look at the Joker, again, for him, it's strange
01:02because he doesn't really have a solid backstory,
01:05but he's so passionate about what he's saying
01:08and his philosophy is so ingrained in him
01:12that you want to hear him talk again.
01:15You want to see him.
01:16You don't really, I mean, there are people
01:18who even rooted for him because his perspective
01:20was, come on, you know?
01:24I've always felt like that's how you know
01:25you have a good film is when every character
01:27is spoken for and the perspective is very solid.
01:31So I think this does a great job from not just Alan,
01:33but from all the, you know, my co-stars
01:37to everything, even behind the camera,
01:42every department felt like they had something
01:45they connected to with the story
01:47that they wanted to kind of leave an imprint,
01:50you know, from art department to music
01:52to the editing.
01:53Like, I think everyone had something
01:54they wanted to say
01:57and that they wanted to leave behind for this film.
02:00So I think that's why it's connecting
02:02with a lot of people.
02:04The Vox, they are native to one of Neptune's moons.
02:13They come to Earth in secret
02:14and they choose when to be seen
02:16and they choose when to remain hidden.
02:19For years, they lived in the periphery,
02:21observing us, testing us,
02:23trying to determine who has the greatest potential.
02:27But it's seldom the one that you think.
02:29Could you talk about the logic
02:30versus the emotion of it?
02:31Because there's a scene with you
02:33and Brendan, for example,
02:34where basically you're like,
02:36I get it, but why?
02:38You know, and you see the logic
02:40and emotion of the situation.
02:42You see Alan thinking us through,
02:44like, what do I do to get through this?
02:47Could you talk about that logic
02:49and emotion within the character?
02:50I just remember when we were filming those scenes,
02:55when it comes to Alan,
03:02logic was outweighed.
03:04I'm sorry, excuse me.
03:05I think when we did those scenes,
03:06it felt like for Alan,
03:09the emotion outweighed the logic.
03:11He was so desperate and ashamed of his own life
03:15that he still felt he can get away with this.
03:19There was still something in him.
03:21He was like, I got this.
03:24I can still, and that, again,
03:26it's all logic has gone out the window with this guy.
03:29And that's because he's just so desperate
03:32to keep this lie going.
03:37And I think it just goes to show you
03:40how much he did not,
03:43how much being embarrassed was going to affect him
03:47and how long he's been just wanting to be successful
03:55and also prove people wrong.
03:58I think all those things kept him from being
04:03just rational, all those things.
04:09And it ends up being tragic.
04:11And that's honestly, that's reality for him.
04:15That's life.
04:16In one of the novels, it's this janitor from Indiana.
04:20He's a fucking loser.
04:22I know about it.
04:23But the Vox Dees, they see greatness in it.
04:27When they're ready,
04:28they will shepherd the Chosen Ones away
04:30into a transport vessel
04:31where they went into a greater Vox Dees consciousness
04:33called the Vox Electus.
04:38My last question to you
04:40is the fact that, like,
04:42obviously you've done a lot of comedy.
04:45You know, well, Brendan,
04:46everybody in this film, a lot of them,
04:48could you talk about the finding the humor
04:51in the darkness?
04:53Obviously, Steve can find that
04:55and you can find that.
04:56But can you talk about that balance?
04:57Like, there's a scene in the kitchen,
04:59which there's a funny part of it,
05:01but there's also something so dark about it.
05:04Yeah.
05:04Honestly, I don't think...
05:06I can't speak for everybody,
05:07but I honestly didn't approach this film
05:11with a comedic point of view at all.
05:16I didn't set out to want to make people laugh at all.
05:19I don't think Steve wanted to either.
05:21In fact, the situation is tragic.
05:26And again, that's a part of comedy.
05:28That's a part of my favorite comedy.
05:30Tragic comedy.
05:30Tragic comedy.
05:31Yeah, you're right.
05:32It starts with the awful thing
05:33that you can think of.
05:35But a comedian's perverse filter
05:37turns it into something that people laugh at
05:40because it pokes at something
05:41people are really feeling deep down.
05:44And I don't think we really...
05:45There are zero jokes in the movie.
05:47No, I know.
05:48No, it's uncomfortable.
05:49It's awkwardness.
05:50That's what makes it...
05:51It's awful.
05:53And I think that's why movies like Fargo
05:55and...
05:57I got to put Fargo up there.
05:59I think Fargo is probably...
06:00I love Burn After Reading, by the way.
06:02It's one of my favorite, like...
06:03But again, there's no jokes in it.
06:04It's all situationally...
06:05It just makes you uncomfortable.
06:08It's really beautiful.
06:11So they're like...
06:14The good guys?
06:25It's personality, though.
06:27Yeah.
06:27When you see that happen to Brad Pitt.
06:29Yeah.
06:29You're just like...
06:30It's not funny, but it's just sort of...
06:32Why did that happen?
06:33But it happens when you...
06:35You can truly execute that well
06:37when you set up the stakes.
06:39And once you set that up,
06:44you can go anywhere you want to go.
06:45And this movie goes a lot of places.
06:47So I think...
06:49I don't think...
06:50I think every actor in the film
06:52do have comedic chops.
06:54But I don't think they approached it
06:56as like, this is funny.
06:58This is going to make...
06:58I think we all approached it honestly.
07:00And what came out of it
07:02was something people really
07:05just kind of reacted to.
07:08Whether it was cringy,
07:10whether it was like...
07:11I heard gasps in the theater.
07:12I heard laughing.
07:13Every emotion I think we hit
07:15during that rollercoaster ride.
07:17But I would say it's only because
07:18we approached it the most honest...
07:21Just honestly.
07:30Apparently I....
07:32that's...
07:34maybe it's just one of us
07:35that, uh...
07:36or of the lip
07:39I'd like or have to...
07:40When were done.
07:41Had any..
07:42with you,
07:43I have no doubt about the...
07:45I would?
07:46If I'm not a felt drawer.
07:47You mean that
07:48what if you hardest hit?
07:49Lass gaming multiplayer then?
07:49In this film...
07:51where you can see when...
07:51I'm getting held in touch.
07:52And so you guys...
07:53by you doing all I can...
07:53play left...
07:55And I have no idea
07:58this movie.
