Producer/Cinematographer Andrew Duensing, Writer/Director Brock Bodell and Actress Dakota Gorman talk to Fest Track about perspective and perception in regards to the world premiere of their selection film "Hellcat" playing the Cheval Noir section of the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, Quebec.

00:30And perception
00:31How the audience perceives it is much
00:34Different than the perspective of Lena
00:35But Lena is seeing it through a completely
00:38Filtered lens at any given

00:47Talk about perspective and perception
00:49In this movie because
00:52It is all about point of view
00:54But then it's also about as you were saying
00:56Dakota an internal point of view
00:57We get when she's looking up at the moon
00:59She has those flashbacks of those
01:02Moments that make
01:03Her think about where she is
01:05And that's a very specific choice
01:07If you all three can talk about perspective and perception
01:10And it's important here
01:11And then I'll let you go
01:12That's a big one
01:15I'll take perspective
01:17First
01:18Perspective was like the guiding light
01:21To a lot of like behavior
01:23And how we shot it
01:25And just like ultimately
01:27Like the direction of the film
01:29Because if one
01:30It was
01:30We kind of set up
01:31These set of rules
01:32And they weren't
01:32You know
01:33They're pretty clearly defined
01:34It's you know
01:35The audience
01:37Is Lena
01:38So everything that
01:39Lena sees
01:40The audience sees
01:41And everything that happens
01:42Outside of her purview
01:43Is
01:43We're in the dark
01:45You've been attracted
01:52And we even went as far as
01:56Like there were
01:57You know
01:57There was a scene that we shot
01:59Outside of the trailer

02:00Ultimately the people
02:02Were like trying to help her out
02:03And we knew that we were like
02:06Cheating our rule a little bit
02:07But we were like
02:08They just might just have this
02:09Like nice little like
02:10Campy carpenter

02:12Moment of like
02:14Getting us out
02:15This was also in a phase
02:16Where we were like
02:16Is this
02:17Are we in this trailer too much
02:18Like do we need to get outside of it
02:19And then as soon as we shot it
02:21They were fantastic
02:22And I would kind of
02:23Wish they could have been in the film
02:24But it did not make sense
02:25For them to be
02:25Once we broke that perspective
02:27And put it into the film
02:28It was like
02:28Just no way
02:29Like we have to
02:30Why
02:30Why did we even do that
02:31Like we
02:32It has to be
02:33So grounded in our perspective
02:34And then like the thought of
02:35The moment of like
02:37Transitioning to another perspective
02:39Like we wanted that handoff
02:40And the way that that handoff is
02:42Is like
02:42Very specific to the film
02:44And then we're
02:44All of a sudden
02:45We're in another
02:46And then the world
02:47Starts opening up
02:47We're really like
02:48Throughout the entire time
02:50From beginning to end
02:51Like always revealing
02:53Always pulling back
02:54That layer
02:54We never really wanted
02:55To fully
02:56Lay it on you
02:58It was just kind of
02:59Always a layer coming off
03:01And then the world
03:01Starts getting bigger
03:02And then the onion's bigger
03:03And then you're pulling off
03:03Different kinds of
03:04Layers
03:05But yeah
03:07No it was just
03:07Perspective like
03:09Like ultimately
03:10Like Andy said
03:10It was like
03:11Kind of like
03:12The guiding light
03:13Of this film
03:13Logistically
03:14Who are you?
03:21I wish I could tell you
03:23What you want to hear
03:24I think too
03:25We knew
03:25Because of where
03:26You know
03:27Without saying anything

03:28The film goes
03:29We knew it was
03:31Really important
03:32To ground the world
03:33As firmly as possible
03:34So that when you get there
03:36It feels earned

03:38And I think for us

03:41The grounding
03:43Of that perspective
03:43Was so important
03:44Because really
03:46At the heart of the movie
03:47I mean you have characters
03:48Who are asking these questions
03:49About the worlds
03:50They live in
03:50Right
03:51And I think that's why
03:52It was
03:52You know
03:54As the movie
03:55You know
03:56Kind of opens up
03:58And you start to get
03:58A little bit more
03:59You realize
04:00Again like
04:01You have to have
04:02That firm base
04:03For the reality of it
04:04So that everybody else
04:06Can be so confused
04:08And pull the audience
04:09Along with them
04:10So that you have
04:10Like you know
04:11Clive and Lena
04:13Can end up
04:14On the same footing
04:15Right
04:15Like you know
04:16It's not a
04:17It's not your kind of
04:18Traditional
04:18Captive-captor
04:20Relationship
04:22You keep her grounded
04:30And that's why
04:30People feel for her
04:31Even though she's
04:32In this extreme situation

04:44But what I wanted

04:47With Lena
04:47As far as her perspective
04:48Is I really dissected it
04:50To be reductive
04:50Into like three pieces
04:52Where when we meet her
04:53She's numbed out
04:55Like in her life
04:56Leading up
04:57Into the moment
04:58Of being captured
04:59She's going through
05:01So much
05:02That she doesn't know
05:02How to cope with
05:03She's just completely
05:04Withdrawn by like
05:05Drinking too much
05:06Which is some of
05:07What we see
05:07In the family photos
05:08She's just totally
05:09Dead inside
05:11I would say
05:11But I can't
05:19And then it's
05:20A breakdown
05:21Of vulnerability
05:22Okay I need to
05:23Embrace
05:24That it is okay
05:25To be sad
05:26And I need to
05:26Open back up

05:29And then it's
05:29The strength

05:31It's showing strength
