00:00Mac Jones is, and actually we shouldn't even, I guess, say this.
00:02He's questionable.
00:03But the plan is for Mac Jones to start this weekend.
00:06Brock Purdy is out.
00:07That is official.
00:09If the Niners beat the Bucs and get to 5-1,
00:12do you want to sign up now with Sharpie for Mac Jones on Sunday night football
00:18against the Atlanta Falcons at Levi's next week?
00:22Dibs says yes.
00:23I say no, but only because of circumstances.
00:26It's not because of anything other than, I don't even know,
00:29is Mac healthy coming out of this game?
00:32When people say, well, Brock's not 100%, I don't know when you're supposed to.
00:36When is he 100%?
00:38Tomorrow?
00:40Thanksgiving?
00:41Anywhere in between, I have no idea.
00:43I will briefly say this about Mac Jones.
00:47This is the one that will really knock my socks off if he wins.
00:52The Thursday game, no doubt.
00:53That was super impressive against the Rams.
00:56But the Bucs blitz like crazy.
01:00Mac is not mobile to begin with.
01:03He's extra not mobile this weekend.
01:07The Bucs' run defense is solid.
01:10Niners haven't been able to run it against anyone, so it doesn't even matter.
01:14The point is, Mac's going to have to be really good.
01:18Mac's going to have to make quick, amazing decisions and execute nicely.
01:24Hopefully, Juwan is in there.
01:25I'd love to get him another big target out there, third down.
01:29But, like, Mac's going to have to, if he can win this one, it is going to take a wonderful performance.
01:35So, if he does it, sure, the confidence grows to another level.
01:39Absolutely.
01:40Absolutely.
01:40And I do think that the record makes it so that you can be extra, extra cautious with Brock, because you and I both agree that when Brock is healthy, Brock gets the job.
01:49And I think that's the reality of where we are with this situation.
01:53And Drew Bledsoe on earlier with the Joes in the morning roast.
01:56And in 2001, he had his entire body lacerated.
02:01And so, Brady played great.
02:02And then Brady got hurt.
02:03And Bledsoe came off the bench and led them to the Super Bowl.
02:06And then two weeks later, back to Brady.
02:08And so, there's a certain amount of, like, you can't lose your job to injury.
02:13You can.
02:13And so, for now, I think if Mac Jones keeps winning, he keeps the job.
02:17Yeah, that's the part that I don't necessarily see.
02:21Like, you know, I'm talking about next week.
02:24Right.
02:24The idea that Mac, like, plays until he loses, that I would totally disagree with.
02:30It's a week-to-week.
02:31Yeah, it's a week-to-week lead.
02:32I do think that if he wins at Tampa, then he gets Atlanta.
02:36And if he wins against Atlanta at home, well, then we start to look at, you know, the next game on the schedule.
02:41Again, I wish that we had, like, the x-rays of Brock's toe.
02:47I wish that we knew how healthy he was.
02:50Is he halfway there?
02:51Is he three-quarters of the way there?
02:53Is he almost there?
02:54Like, that's what I would want to know.
02:56Because, to me, if he's fully, fully out of the danger zone, if that even exists,
03:02then largely the idea would be he plays the next game.
03:06But I don't know if he's there.
03:09I don't know if he's ever going to be there this year.
03:11You know, the turf toe thing seems so mysterious to people, and it's got so many levels to it.
03:17And it sounds innocuous, like, ooh, turf toe.
03:19Yeah, you hurt your toe.
03:21Right.
03:21I mean, you got turf toe.
03:23You stubbed your toe.
03:24And this is more than that.
03:26It's way more than that.
03:27Right.
03:27And if we talk about bilateral Achilles tendonitis, now all of us have a shiver down our spine.
03:33And that's basically like, yeah, your legs hurt.
03:36And I know it's more than that, and it can lead to the Achilles tear.
03:40But turf toe sounds like, you know, something from Nickelodeon.
03:44Right.
03:44Well, and just in general, toe.
03:46Like, you got slimed.
03:47Yeah.
03:47You know?
03:48Oh, that does look gross.
03:50Jonathan in the city.
03:52Let's hear from you all, okay?
03:53Hey, Jonathan, thanks for calling.
03:54What's up?
03:54Hey, thanks for letting me on, guys.
03:58I just want to say, hell yeah.
04:00And for a simple reason, you know, there's something magical about being under Kyle Shanahan
04:08for the first two years.
04:10Look at Jimmy, right?
04:11He went from his first two years, first year, very good.
04:15And then he went, feels great, baby.
04:18Rock Curtis, very similar.
04:20First two years, very solid.
04:22What a ride and all that.
04:25So, why would this be different?
04:28This guy now stands 6'4", bigger than Jimmy and Brock with a stronger arm.
04:33So, like I said, man, let it ride.
04:35Let's go, Mac.
04:36Let's go Niners.
04:38Jonathan, thanks.
04:39I don't necessarily see the whole two-year comp thing.
04:43I get what he's getting at.
04:44Although, Jimmy Garoppolo's trip to the Super Bowl was technically his third year with the
04:48Niners, if you count the acquisition year, number one.
04:51Number two, I don't want to just dismiss the year two years later where Jimmy ended up in
04:56the NFC title game again, even though that was an up-and-down year and everything, and
05:03then they made the run at the end.
05:05I tend to look at it in a different way, which is we see a lot of quarterbacks maximize who
05:12they can be under Kyle Shanahan.
05:14And I think that's who Jimmy was.
05:18I think that's who Brock Purdy has been and will continue to be.
05:22And now we're getting our first glimpse for a month here as to whether or not that can
05:27be true for Mac Jones as well.
05:29And the early returns are good.
05:30Right.
05:30And the early returns are that everybody is better with Kyle.
05:34And you can go to CJ Beathard and Nick Mullins.
05:37They were better with Kyle.
05:38Now, it turns out that they were pretty much mediocre with Kyle, but elsewhere they've
05:43been unplayable and bad.
05:45And Trey Lance is a little bit of a different case because he didn't get much time here,
05:50but he's got no sniff elsewhere other than August football.
05:54So literally every quarterback has been better here than they've been better there.
05:59Sam Darnold is an example where he got one game here and they lost, whatever.
06:03You didn't really get to see Sam Darnold here, but he would say that Brock Purdy is the guy
06:08who helped him go out and be better elsewhere.
06:11So yeah, like where's Josh Dobbs now?
06:14Where's Brandon Allen?
06:15Are those guys suddenly like tearing it up?
06:18No, they're not.
06:19So you're better here with Kyle than you are there.
06:22And so in the short term, if Mac is better here and he's this good here and he keeps winning,
06:28then he keeps playing to me.
06:31Yeah.
06:31Yeah.
06:31I don't think to them though, like that, to me, that's all I'm saying on that one.
06:36That's too, it's too much of a blanket statement.
06:40Like I don't, I do not believe that the 49ers can say right now, you play till you lose.
06:47I got, that's just that, that covers too many other things that we don't know about.
06:52We don't know about Brock's health.
06:55We don't know about Mac's health.
06:58We don't know what's going on in the standings.
07:00We don't know if Mac Jones continues to win, if it's because he's playing well or not.
07:04Do you know what I mean?
07:05Like if, if, if, if all of them had looked like the Arizona game, would you just be like, he plays till he loses?
07:13Because that one to me was like, eh, like you're right.
07:18You won the new Orleans game.
07:20I thought was really nice.
07:21And the Rams game, when you add in the circumstances was really impressive.
07:25Oh yeah.
07:25The Arizona game was like, well, you won, you won a nice job with the two minute drive.
07:30Like I give you credit, but I didn't think that was a great game for Mac Jones.
07:34No, they won 16, 15 and he was, you know, a little bit shaky.
07:37He threw a big pick and your defense bailed you out and the rest of it.
07:40So it all is very contextual and you look at the schedule though.
07:44And if you win at Tampa, you've got Atlanta at home and you'll be favored.
07:48You go to Houston, you'll be favored.
07:50You go to the giants, you'll be favored.
07:52And then you've got the Rams at home and already we're into like November.
07:56I know, but don't blow off.
07:57I noticed this a second ago and looking at the schedule, the Atlanta game next week.
08:02Okay.
08:03You're right.
08:03You'll be totally favored.
08:04But from the quarterbacking perspective, the next three games, two of them on the road,
08:10Houston and the giants followed by the Rams trip here.
08:14Those are three, no joke, defensive lines.
08:18I know the giants, you look at the giants and you're like, they suck.
08:22The giants can rush the passer and the giants gave Jalen Hurts some problems last night.
08:27They've got Burns.
08:28They've got Thibodeau.
08:30So they like, they've, they've got action rushing the passer and that's also MetLife
08:36stadium, whatever you think about that turf and all of that stuff.
08:40Like you have to circumstantially, they may not be great teams.
08:45You'll be favored, but you know, in Houston, man, I love their defense.
08:49I don't love their team, but I love their defense.
08:52So you got to factor all those things in with regard to how you see the quarterback perform
08:57and whether that's the right spot to bring someone back or not, or whatever.
09:00And I did the, uh, the whole schedule, Sam thing before the year.
09:04And I did it again today because going into the year, the Niners opponents had a four 15
09:09winning percentage based on last year.
09:11And if you look at where those teams are now, the teams that they will play or have played,
09:17the winning percentage is almost 500.
09:20It's about four 90 Tampa's better.
09:22And your whole division is better.
09:24Indianapolis is better.
09:26New Orleans got a win.
09:28Carolina's now quietly got two wins.
09:29And so, but if you want to just look at one loss for who you play and who you will play,
09:35the Giants now have two wins.
09:36And so your schedule, Sam, look at the Niners, the teams that they knew they were going to
09:42play and what they were, they're actually better now than they were last year.
09:47There's that.
09:48And, and, and the Niners are worse just because of people who aren't available.
09:51Right.
09:52Although they're four and one.
09:53Yeah, exactly.
09:53Um, all right, Matt in San Jose next.
09:56Hi, Matt.
09:57Thanks for the call.
10:00What's up guys.
10:01Yo.
10:03So to, to answer, to answer the question, I'm going to have to put on the Greg Cosell hat.
10:08Cause you got to evaluate all the factors here.
10:10Um, and like you said, it's a week to week league, but you know, the, the smartest of
10:16fans won't answer this type of question until Friday.
10:18You know what I mean?
10:18So like the questions that rise up are going to be stuff like who else is returning besides
10:24possibly Brock.
10:25When you asked him, do you want Matt Jones?
10:27Well, who else is coming back?
10:28If it's pure saw and Jennings and Kittle, well, then maybe I want my starting quarterback with
10:34those guys.
10:34But if it's Kendrick Bourne and Jake Tonjes and sky more and MVS, well, Matt Jones is winning
10:42with those guys.
10:42And if he goes out and beats the high flying Tampa Bay offense with those guys, then yeah,
10:47hell yeah.
10:47I'll give them Atlanta on Sunday night, go home, go in front of your fans at a primetime
10:52game and ball out.
10:54I don't care what the outcome of that is.
10:55We can reevaluate the quarterback position afterwards.
10:58Matt, that's totally fair.
11:00Thanks, my friend.
11:01Appreciate the call.
11:01I like, I think about it this way too.
11:04And I don't like the Niners aren't thinking this way because they put $265 million into them.
11:10I don't think that their ego is that fragile that they're worried about how to present
11:15Brock Purdy to the public.
11:16The guy's been to two lengthy playoff runs already.
11:19I think they've got plenty of confidence.
11:21But if this were a rookie, like we talked a lot about this with regard to Jackson Dart
11:26at the beginning of the year.
11:27We all knew he was going to take the job from Russell Wilson.
11:30And the question was when.
11:32And I thought it would have been later in the season because the Giants are thinking about
11:37what's called a soft landing spot.
11:39In other words, we're not winning the Super Bowl this year.
11:42What's the right time to present Jackson Dart to our fans?
11:45Well, they had to move it up because Russell was so bad.
11:48Oh my God.
11:49And the Giants were so bad that they moved it up and actually they landed him in a spot
11:54that I didn't think they would.
11:56It was a home game.
11:57That's the right thing to do.
11:58But it was the Chargers.
12:00It was a really good defense.
12:01Well, then the kid went out there and beat him.
12:03So now it's like, all right, now we can swagger into the room.
12:06Then he goes and loses to New Orleans, which is what I thought his landing spot was going
12:10to be.
12:11Five turnovers on offense.
12:12And then he comes back and beats the Eagles on prime time.
12:15So wonderful start.
12:17Now to the point where if he even misses a play, his coach chases him into the blue tent
12:21because he wants him back out on the field so badly.
12:24Now transfer that to the 49ers.
12:26Because this is the potential for embarrassment, which is Matt keeps winning, but then you bring
12:34Brock back because he's healthy and he doesn't play well and you lose.
12:39And that's going to get all of the buzzards really, really going.
12:43So do you think about the landing spot?
12:46And I would argue, obviously, this is all based on health.
12:48You don't rush him if he's not healthy.
12:49But the softest landing spot in the near term for Brock is next week.
12:56There's no question.
12:57It's a home game.
12:58It's prime time.
12:59The Falcons defense scares no one.
13:01But after that, the Texans on the road, MetLife Stadium and the Giants pass rush followed
13:06by the Rams.
13:08Your next somewhat soft landing spot is Thanksgiving week at home on Monday night against the Panthers.
13:13And that's six more games from now.
13:15But if you're paying a guy $265 million, you're not thinking about soft landing spot.
13:20And I know you're not paying him yet.
13:21And that's been the thing that I've been beating into everyone's head.
13:24But if you think that your guy is the dude, and they do, and you do, and I also do, when
13:30he is healthy, I don't give a crap about a landing spot.
13:34You're Brock Purdy, dog.
13:35You've been to the Super Bowl.
13:37You've been to two NFC Championship games.
13:39And we're paying you to be that guy.
13:42Jackson Dart, fine.
13:43Soft landing spot.
13:44And you want to get the rookie in there.
13:46And you want to make it a little bit easier on him.
13:49And quietly, Jackson Dart and the Giants at Denver at Philly rematch game.
13:56And then they host the Niners.
13:57So all you Jackson Dart fantasy people, you may want to find another quarterback because
14:02his next three games are going to be tough.
14:04Well, I am one of those Jackson Dart fantasy people, unfortunately.
14:10I didn't listen to you last night.
14:12Now, Mack may go out and outscore him.
14:15He may.
14:15He's allowed to.
14:16We're not wrong yet.
14:18But Jackson's got legs, man.
14:20He's like ZZ Top.
14:21That sucker will go out there and run, and that helps in fantasy.
14:24No doubt.
14:25Did you give me a three?
14:25I gave you a three.
14:26Just because it's a 47-year-old reference?
14:29I know.
14:30I'm about to give me a five, though.
14:31You ready for what I'm about to say next?
14:32Talk to me.
14:33Steve Young at 315.
14:35Let's go, Steve Young.
14:36Okay.
14:37Steve Young at 315.
14:38Steve Young at 315.
14:40But not before Bobby and Los Altos.
14:43Uh-uh-uh.
14:44Hi, Bobby.
14:44What you doing?
14:46Hey, guys.
14:47Thanks for taking the call.
14:48Look, obviously the Bucs have been probably the most exciting watch this season as well
14:53as the Niners.
14:54I mean, the only exception is if the Cardinals are holding a lead, then you got to watch
14:59which historic way they can poop in their pants.
15:01But given how close both teams have won out at the end, I'm going to just make a prediction
15:10first.
15:10I fully expect a blowout, meaning over 10 points.
15:14So I don't think this is going to be a close game.
15:15I don't know who's going to win, but I think this spread is going to be over 10 points.
15:19So I don't know how that goes against Gibster Domus, but that's my prediction.
15:25So as it relates to Mack and Brock, look, I think you just got to go with a hot hand.
15:31I think this idea of you can't bench an injured, you know, a player that's injured, I just
15:36think that's like a historical thing that we say, kind of like, hey, you can't flip
15:41your bat or you can't go for it when you're on your side of the 50.
15:46I just think it's something that we're so used to saying, but analytics or whatever, I
15:51just feel like that won't be as taboo going forward.
15:56And so what I'm going to say is it's based on context.
15:59For this game, if Mack wins us the game, not if the Niners win as a team, but if we see
16:05that Mack was the main contributor to the win, then you got to go with the hot hand.
16:10I mean, it's kind of like, you know, for the degenerates out there when you're playing
16:13Baccarat, you know, Banker wins five times in a row.
16:16Of course, it's a 50-50 chances Banker or player blew a red for the uninitiated, but you
16:21just got to go red because you got to go with the hot hand.
16:25I mean, it defies logic per se, but you don't want to break that streak.
16:29And that's kind of how I feel with Mack.
16:30If he is the reason we win, then I think you just got to start him, even though it's at
16:35home and against probably not a very intimidating defense against Atlanta.
16:39And then finally, can I just say this?
16:42The Niners better be ready to play because I think human nature would say Tampa's, you
16:47know, not starting their two starting wide receivers.
16:50They have an injured running back, so three injuries to offensive stars.
16:54I don't know if that sounds familiar to anybody, but that was like us eight days ago.
16:58So please, Niners, I know you're all listening.
17:03Don't let this be a trap game, even though it's an away game.
17:06Don't be sleeping on this.
17:08And boys, I definitely had you winning all out, not just covering the spread.
17:13So please help Bobby out.
17:15Okay.
17:15I love Bobby third person.
17:17Yeah, I don't think the Niners can go in this Sunday and be like, oh, we're overlooking
17:23Tampa because they were hurt.
17:24Bobby says this was the Niners eight days ago.
17:27I hate to break it to everybody.
17:28It's still the Niners today.
17:29Right.
17:30Maybe Juwan is back.
17:32And other than that, the only difference between Thursday night, a week and a half ago, and
17:36this game coming up this weekend is Mack is even more hurt this time than he was last
17:40time.
17:40And Mack Jones did not, quote, win that game.
17:43If you want to, like, close your eyes and remember, the Rams were on the doorstep with
17:48a minute seven to go, and you had one timeout.
17:51Yep.
17:51And if they just run, run, oh, and then we score, you lose that game.
17:55So Mack Jones didn't, quote, win the game.
17:58They all won the game.
