Increased senior citizens’ pension, a reduction in gas prices and re-employment are among the items citizens hope to see in Monday’s Budget Presentation.
Our reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh walked through High Street, San Fernando today to hear some of your budget wish list items.
00:00With the new government, there's renewed hope of what to expect in the upcoming national budget.
00:06For those we spoke to on Thursday, an increase to the senior citizens' pension was high on that list.
00:30Then there's the hope of seeing gas prices reduced, or at best, remain the same.
00:48We're hoping for weather change in life, right? You want the gas to go down a little bit?
00:54I don't see what's going on with gas because I'm a taxi driver and I want to know if gas will stay the same way.
00:59In the last time, the administration, gas was always going up. That was a priority for gas to be going up.
01:05So let me hope the gas price stay down so people can travel comfortable.
01:10Others, like this recently retrenched forestry worker who, as a result, now leaves Toco to sell products in San Fernando to make a living,
01:20re-employment is what they're looking towards.
01:24I'm hoping to see that they'll start back at least forestry and CPEP because 99% of us out here are on the bread line and we have families combined.
01:33I don't do crime. I never did crime in my life, but honestly, that's why the crime rate is how it is.
01:39Because a lot of us is on the bread line right now and we are suffering. We are hungry. It's not nice. It's hard. It's frustrating.
01:48They could bring tears to their eyes, but we're suffering. We're literally suffering. We're living on nothing.
01:53Others want to see the Petrotrin refinery restarted and an increase to salaries as both measures they believe would help alleviate the crime situation.
02:04If you don't make plenty of young boys with their work and they won't do crime and they won't go into the drug side, you see. Too much of crime going on.
02:13Maybe they'll get a raise in the pay or whatever. But right now, people are uncomfortable and of course, it'll have an effect on the crime. Right?
02:22And then we'll be getting pressure from the next door and all them kind of things.
02:25Yeah, what a vital. We have to live with it. That is all about this. We have no other choice.
