In our Constituency Spotlight we head to Tobago, where cameraman Derrick Hamlet and reporter Elizabeth Williams visited Tobago East to bring us this report.
Transcript
00:00No constituency spotlight would be complete without visiting the fishing village of
00:22Charlotteville. We caught up with some of the candidates contesting the Tobago East
00:27the seat and all expressed to us why the people of Tobago should vote for them on April 28th.
00:34Both the East and West seats are being keenly contested. We start with the Patriotic Front's
00:41candidate, Weed Carruth. Well, for one, we stand on transparency, integrity and honour.
00:49These are some of the tenants of our party. Me personally, I don't consider myself a politician,
00:55but I'm a humanitarian. We then journeyed to Mason Hall, where we spoke to innovative
01:01Democratic Alliance candidate Jared Panman Balfour about his prospects. Why should the people of
01:08Tobago vote for the IDA? Well, the IDA brings to you new initiatives. We took a lot of where we are
01:16located into mind. We plan to bring initiatives that boost our ecotourism because Tobago is a
01:24cultural place. We are surrounded by beaches. Many of our villages, our homes are next to beaches.
01:31The role of our MP is to ensure that whatever law is passing nationally is also beneficial to us in
01:39Tobago. And we have seen where the MP has been silent. Let me give you an example, like for instance,
01:46the hunting issue where we have to wait two years. Now, that might be good for Trinidad. But we have
01:53farmers over here who are complaining about coquico and parrots affecting our crops because of the lengthy
01:59time that they have to wait to hunt. In Roxborough, while visiting this fruit vendor, we spoke to David
02:06Tomo Thomas of the Tobago People's Party. Because I have promised on this campaign not to talk about
02:15my opponents, whoever they may be, I would simply say that the way the representative and the
02:24parliamentary representative operated, they have created an opportunity for me to come in and show
02:31what true representation is about, show that I do understand the culture of Tobago, show that I do
02:38understand Tobago East, because I've been dwelling among the people of Tobago East for the past 43 years.
02:46And I am seeing that there are huge opportunities for us to create an environment, or for me to create an
02:56environment for all of Tobago to flourish. But what are the people saying on the ground? We hit the blocks
03:03and the local mini-marts to hear from the people. Are you voting in the upcoming election? No, me and sure
03:09if I vote in, because I not see no party personally in Tobago to vote for. I out here a long time,
03:15I don't have been in and out of prison, right? I vote and put a party in power, was hoping to get some help from them. But all I
03:23decide to suit politician, yea go yea come, yea helping they self and who are around them.
03:28What party are you supporting?
03:29is a nice beautiful child that we have enough for years but politically ayana is dead because
03:50you can't tell me that you in a party and everybody knows that the pnm you have to tow
03:55the party line and the first time she went into parliament she said she wanted this
04:02lantern here to fix and they fix it and she never repeated
04:10at this makeshift barbershop near the beachfront in charlotteville the men spoke to tb6 news about
04:16their concerns with the nearby charlotteville fish facility this is feces on the ground
04:22there you see this thing here like the second way we're supposed to take up fish guts and
04:29fish guts and toilet water it's supposed to go over in the thing there
04:36purified and come back out clean and the first spoil going to three years now
04:41did you bring that to the attention of everybody everybody from mason hall to charlotteville only
04:48two pnm flags were observed one in pembroke and this one blowing in the wind in charlotteville
04:55on december 6th 2021 according to the elections and the boundaries commission ebc there was a 57
05:04voter turnout as a 29 273 votes were cast from an electorate of 51 383 i am elizabeth williams with
