00:00Like, where is, huh? What?
00:01That's also not where the political news ends,
00:03and that's because you have Supreme Court-related news,
00:05with the justices now kicking off their new term
00:07by hearing an incredibly consequential case
00:09that could affect laws that protect minors
00:11from conversion therapy in nearly 30 states.
00:13And specifically, the legal challenge being heard today
00:15was brought by a Christian therapist named Kaylee Childs.
00:17And Childs is suing Colorado over its ban on treatment
00:20and tended to change the sexual orientation
00:22or gender identity of kids under 18.
00:24And with that, she's arguing that the law
00:26violates her right to free speech and talk therapy
00:28because it prevents her from talking about her own viewpoints.
00:30But Colorado's attorney general is hit back
00:32by noting that the state law only applies to minors
00:35and still allows people of any age
00:36to seek conversion therapy counseling
00:38from religious organizations,
00:39just not from therapists who are licensed by the state.
00:42In arguing that states have the right
00:43to require licensed therapists and medical professionals
00:45to obey established standards of care
00:47and that the ban on conversion therapy
00:48is meant to protect minors from substandard care.
00:51And as the lawyers in Colorado have noted in court,
00:53there's a mountain of evidence showing
00:54that conversion therapy is not only ineffective,
00:57but actively harmful.
00:58In fact, every major medical organization
01:00from the American Medical Association
01:01to the American Psychological Association
01:03has rebuked the practice,
01:05reporting to research showing that conversion therapy
01:07doesn't work and actually causes a deep depression
01:09and suicidal thoughts in people under the age of 18.
01:11So as a result, we saw a wave of states enacting laws
01:14banning conversion therapy back in the 2010s,
01:16with that, of course, including Colorado.
01:17And so now, because so many states have similar laws,
01:19the way the Supreme Court ultimately rules
01:21in this Colorado case,
01:22it'll have massive implications that go beyond just one state.
01:24I've read if the Supreme Court rules
01:26that Colorado's law does infringe on free speech,
01:28you could either send it back down to a lower court
01:30for additional consideration
01:31or declare that it's unconstitutional
01:33and just strike it down.
01:34And if the justices choose that second option,
01:36they would likely invalidate similar bans
01:37on conversion therapy in nearly 30 other states
01:39that have implemented laws
01:40meant to protect their own residents
01:41from a practice that is widely considered to be dangerous.
01:44But as far as what happens next,
01:45we're gonna have to watch for the ruling,
01:47though very notably,
01:48we did see the court's conservative majority
01:50seemingly signaling that they would be ruling
01:51against Colorado during oral arguments today.
01:54But then, as far as political quickie news,
01:56this is the closest thing
01:57to a positive piece of news today.
01:59And that is, if you live in California
02:00and you stream content, here's some good news.
02:03Gavin Newsom just signed a law
02:04that banned streaming services
02:05from cranking up the volume on commercials
02:07to make them louder than the content being streamed.
02:09Right, and this is actually a pretty significant move
02:10because while federal law already requires TV
02:12and radio to do this,
02:14those laws, they don't apply to streaming services
02:16as anyone who's ever gotten a sonic blast
02:18from a mid-roll ad on YouTube can confirm.
02:19Right, but now, starting in July,
02:21under California's new law,
02:22major streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu,
02:24Prime Video, and YouTube,
02:25they're gonna have to start complying
02:27with federal regulations on the volume
02:28that traditional broadcasters are bound by.
02:30Right, and this is also standout news
02:31because of the timing.
02:32Right, this is going down
02:33as many streaming sites are now introducing
02:34tiered subscription models in the last few years
02:36that require people to pay more
02:38if they don't wanna hear ads.
02:39And so, you know, one,
02:39it'll be interesting to see
02:40if other states follow California's lead,
02:42or two, the platforms just make kind of universal
02:45or nationwide sh-
