00:00Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show.
00:02You daily dive into the news.
00:03It is Monday, it's been a weekend,
00:05and there's a lot to talk about today, starting with this.
00:08It seems like all hell's breaking loose
00:09in Portland, in Chicago,
00:11and that is very likely what Trump wants.
00:13Because even as both cities are fighting his efforts
00:15to send in the military,
00:16federal agents already in them,
00:17they've been accused of escalating the situation.
00:19They're seemingly trying to make them resemble
00:21the crime-ridden, war-ravaged wastelands
00:23that he's made them out to be.
00:24So in Portland, for example,
00:25what we've seen has been a few months,
00:27a pretty small protest based around a building
00:29used by ICE in the southwest part of the city.
00:31But instead, you've got Trump claiming
00:33that what's been taking place
00:33is the destruction of the city.
00:35And with that, he's vowed to deploy troops
00:36to protect what he's called war-ravaged Portland,
00:39as well as ICE facilities under attack
00:40by, quote, Antifa and other domestic terrorists.
00:43And all this attention,
00:44it's reportedly spurred people from outside the city
00:46to come there, including right-wing counter demonstrators.
00:49And in fact, this weekend,
00:50you had what appeared to be right-wing activists
00:51and influencers waving banners and cheering
00:54when federal agents shot tear gas, flashbangs,
00:56and pepper balls toward a crowd
00:57of more than a hundred protesters
00:59gathered outside of the ICE building.
01:00All of which appeared to be a significant escalation
01:02by ICE on the demonstrators
01:03without really anything spurring that on.
01:05The reports were telling that agents
01:06had previously kept their crowd dispersal efforts
01:08to the driveway and the street
01:09immediately outside of the building,
01:10but this time, they extended their efforts
01:12by several blocks.
01:13Right, and as that was happening
01:14in one small corner of the city,
01:16you also had a legal battle playing out.
01:17And with that, on Saturday,
01:18you had a Trump-appointed judge
01:19issuing a temporary restraining order
01:21blocking the administration
01:22from sending in Oregon's National Guard.
01:24With the judge pointing to what she called
01:25substantial evidence
01:26that the protests at the Portland ICE facility
01:28were not significantly violent or disruptive
01:30in the days or even weeks
01:31leading up to the president's directive.
01:33And with that, saying that she expected a trial court
01:34to agree with the state
01:35that the president had exceeded
01:36his constitutional authority.
01:38And while the administration, they quickly appealed,
01:39you also had Trump trying to get around her order
01:41by trying to send in 200 members
01:43of the California National Guard,
01:45who notably, one, had already been sent to Los Angeles,
01:47and two, a different federal judge
01:49already ruled last month
01:50that the troops sent to the LA area
01:51had been used illegally as a national police force.
01:54And actually, in response to Trump's effort
01:55to turn them on another state,
01:56you had California saying
01:57that it would be joining Oregon and suing Trump.
01:59But then also, you had the judge in the Portland case
02:01quickly calling an emergency hearing.
02:03And there, she revised her restraining order
02:04to cover the, quote,
02:05relocation, federalization, or deployment
02:07of members of the National Guard of any state
02:09or the District of Columbia in the state of Oregon.
02:11But they're also telling lawyers
02:12from the Justice Department
02:13that the president was in direct contravention of her order.
02:16But then, despite all that,
02:17you also had Trump on Saturday
02:18ordering the activation of 300 National Guard troops
02:21to Chicago against the wishes
02:22of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
02:23But then, Pritzker last night,
02:25claiming that the Guard in his state
02:26had been informed that Trump had ordered 400 members
02:28of the Texas National Guard to be in his state,
02:30as well as others, including Oregon,
02:32although that was before the judge's revised order.
02:34But in any case, the state of Illinois
02:35and the city of Chicago
02:36are now suing the Trump administration as well.
02:38And so, you know, we wait to see
02:39if they also get the National Guard deployment blocked.
02:41We've also seen outlets reporting
02:43that federal agents in Chicago
02:44have become increasingly aggressive.
02:46And with that, you've got videos of agents
02:47deploying tear gas, pepper balls,
02:49and roughly throwing protesters to the ground going viral.
02:51And so, on Friday, for example,
02:52you had federal agents reportedly throwing
02:54a tear gas canister at people on a busy street
02:56and then leaving the scene,
02:57with that also happening
02:58right in front of an elementary school.
02:59Also, on Saturday,
03:00there was this highly contested thing that happened,
03:03where you had an agent shooting and injuring a driver
03:05who Trump officials claimed rammed her car
03:06into a federal law enforcement vehicle.
03:08But then, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin
03:10describing the shooting incident as a response
03:12to an ambush that was carried out by domestic terrorists,
03:14who also threw gas rocks and bottles at law enforcement.
03:17Also, law enforcement alleged that the driver
03:19had been armed with a semi-automatic weapon,
03:20but charging documents didn't mention a weapon.
03:22And so, with that, you had Pritzker saying
03:24he wanted more information
03:25and didn't really trust the official account.
03:26It's really hard to know exactly what the facts are,
03:29and they won't let us access the facts.
03:32They are just putting out their propaganda,
03:35and then we've got to later determine
03:37what actually happened.
03:38Right, and then with that, you also had Pritzker saying
03:40that he had directed state agencies
03:41to investigate a recent raid
03:42at an apartment building on Chicago's south side.
03:44And there, he was referring to reports
03:46that children had been zip-tied and held,
03:47and that elderly people had been thrown into a U-Haul
03:49for three hours.
03:50And Pritzker adding that he believed
03:51that some of the people detained were also US citizens.
03:54And so, you know, with all that,
03:54you had Pritzker making the argument
03:56that this chaos is what Trump wants.
03:58They are the ones that are making it a war zone.
04:01They want mayhem on the ground.
04:03They want to create the war zone
04:05so that they can send in even more troops.
04:07But ultimately, that's where we are
04:08with the situation right now.
04:09Obviously, we're gonna have to wait to see what happens,
04:11both legally and on the ground.
04:13Especially because in this part's my opinion,
04:14it does feel like Donald Trump is like trying to set up
04:17the chaos for something to happen really big
04:20so it could kind of justify him
04:21to do something even bigger.
04:22Which also feels crazy to say at this point,
04:24because essentially it feels like Donald Trump
04:26is having Texas invade Illinois.
04:28But that said, you know, that's the news,
04:30a little bit of my opinion.
04:31And of course, I'd love to hear from you,
04:32your thoughts, opinions, reactions,
04:33especially if you're in the States being
04:35.
