Mark Sanchez is now facing a Level 5 Felony battery involving serious bodily injury charge ... which carries a penalty of one to six years behind bars, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced minutes ago.
00:00Mark Sanchez, the former NFL quarterback, is in huge trouble.
00:07He faces a worst-case scenario of convicted six years in prison for a bizarre attack.
00:17Totally bizarre attack that police, that went down late Friday night and Saturday morning in Indianapolis.
00:23We broke the story Saturday morning that Mark Sanchez was in the hospital, had a stab wound,
00:29and then the story just went off the rails.
00:32We thought it was the victim.
00:34Thought he was the victim, and then the police came out and said,
00:37no, he actually is the assailant in this dispute.
00:40Even though he's in the hospital, we are going to be charging him first with three misdemeanors.
00:48And then this morning, they added a felony, and I think the felony has to do with the injuries the other guy suffered, which...
00:55And they were significant.
00:57Exactly.
00:57They were significant, so let's kind of set the scene.
01:00So, truck driver pulls up to...
01:03Outside of a hotel.
01:04Outside of a hotel.
01:05Mark Sanchez, by the way, was there to call the Colts-Raiders NFL game on Sunday for Fox.
01:09So, this is video that the New York Post got of Sanchez after he was stabbed.
01:17Right.
01:17He's just walking down the street, and you can see his shirt is all bloody.
01:21So, for whatever reason, and I think alcohol was clearly involved...
01:28Public intoxication is one of the charges.
01:31Mark Sanchez had a problem with the way the driver parked the truck.
01:35Yeah.
01:35He apparently, according to the truck driver, kind of, you know, in a frenzy, Mark confronts this guy and says, hey, you can't park here.
01:43And then they get into a verbal argument, and the truck driver says that he felt threatened.
01:48So, what does he do?
01:49He has pepper spray on him.
01:51He says he...
01:51But didn't Sanchez get in the cab of the...
01:54Tries to get in the cab of the car, which is also one of the other charges.
01:58Unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.
02:00So, he tries to get into the driver's side of this guy's cab, of his truck.
02:05And the guy, by the way, we should say, the guy is 69 years old.
02:0869 years old, right.
02:08And Sanchez is, what, 38?
02:1038 years old.
02:10Yeah, 38.
02:11He's 6'3", 230 pounds.
02:12He's an elite athlete.
02:13So, there's a disparity there.
02:15So, the guy says he feels at threat.
02:17He's worried about Mark being there.
02:19He tries to pepper spray, Mark.
02:21He says the pepper spray has no effect.
02:24Now, it seems like there's some sort of struggle where the guy is actually then pulled out of his truck.
02:30And they are rolling around on the ground outside of his truck on the street.
02:34And, by the way, this is a guy who is there to deliver...
02:38He's picking up oil.
02:39This is the part that's bizarre about it.
02:40We should say, the part where this happens is in an alley, right?
02:44At a loading dock.
02:45So, this is not on the street in downtown Indianapolis where Mark Sanchez might have a car parked.
02:52It's in his alley.
02:53It's not...
02:54So, I don't know why they get into this argument, but...
02:57I want to know what Mark Sanchez is on.
02:58But even if...
02:59Because for someone to go to someone random in the street and just say,
03:02this is my hotel, you need to leave, or what have you, like...
03:05He had to be on something strong.
03:06Right.
03:06Wasted.
03:07He was wasted.
03:08So, then...
03:09That's...
03:10Now, so, he tries to pepper spray.
03:12He does pepper spray Mark, but he says it had no effect.
03:14And takes out of the...
03:15Sanchez pulls him out of the cab.
03:18They're fighting on the ground.
03:19And the guy finally takes a knife out when nothing else is working.
03:23Right.
03:23And he stabs him.
03:24Right.
03:24Multiple times in the upper torso.
03:27Now, somehow in this fight, he also gets badly hurt, like you mentioned those injuries.
03:32I mean, he has a laceration...
03:34His face is cut.
03:34His face is...
03:34Right.
03:34That supposedly was so bad, it went through his cheek and into his tongue.
03:39That's how bad this laceration is.
03:40And I think that's why today, when the officials speak at this press conference, they say, hey, look,
03:45we've looked at this guy's injuries, the 69-year-olds, and his injuries have risen to a level where
03:49this is not a misdemeanor anymore.
03:51This is a felony.
03:52And that's why they tacked on the felony.
03:54So, Sanchez is still in the hospital.
03:56Yes.
03:56He is lawyered up and, by the way, has a contract with Fox.
04:01Yes.
04:02So, we haven't heard what's going on there.
04:04Honestly, I think his biggest concern right now is just his health because the injuries
04:08were critical.
04:09Yeah.
04:09But they said he's stable now, but when he gets out of the hospital, he's going to have
04:15to deal with this.
04:16The first thing is he's going to take a mug shot.
04:17The other thing is he leaves that area where the altercation occurred and then goes into
04:24a bar.
04:26And when you think of-
04:27Did he go into a bar?
04:28I know he walked down the street.
04:30Well, he was walking-
04:30Right.
04:31And he's clearly injured.
04:32My understanding was he walked-
04:34If he wasn't walking in the bar, he was walking toward the bar.
04:37Yes.
04:38But it's kind of bizarre that he clearly was not in his right mind.
04:43We've seen videos now.
04:44There's blood all over the place.
04:45There's blood trails on the street.
04:47The police thought somebody was shot at first.
04:49I mean, there was a massive police response to this.
04:52It was chaos in that area.
04:54Hi, I'm Pincus Grace based in Nevada.
04:56And thank you, TMZ, so much for having me on today.
04:59I just think this whole situation in Indianapolis is completely heartbreaking.
05:04This was a heinous act against an older man just trying to do his job.
05:09And I just hope that he gets the justice and the healing that he deserves.
05:13Well, the police have said that there are no favors given here to Mark Sanchez because of who he is.
05:21And they said that they're going to hold someone accountable.
05:23He's angry.
05:24But, yeah, I got to say, I do think there's an element when you get outside of, like, Los Angeles or New York that when a celebrity acts up that way, they react even harsher.
05:37Oh, I think so.
05:38Harv, the guy literally says, he goes, I don't care who you are or what you did for your job or how much money you have.
05:42If you come here and you commit acts of violence, we're going to hold you accountable.
05:46And he seemed angry when he said it.
05:47It's normal in our life for you to act up.
05:49I didn't say it's normal.
05:50But it happens a lot here.
05:53You see it a lot.
05:53Yes.
05:54We should say, by the way, the police have said that they have looked at several camera angles of this, that they've actually, in that alley, there are surveillance cameras that they've looked at.
06:04You knew.
06:05They made the arrest so quick, so soon after the incident happened, you knew they had seen the video.
06:09Yeah.
06:10And it matched up.
06:11Yeah.
06:11Both Sanchez and the driver, too, also recorded that on their phones, according to the probable cause affidavit.
06:16Right.
06:16So whatever you see on the video, you'll probably get even more details based on what was said in those moments.
