Local 10 anchor and reporter, Will Manso, shares updates from the Mike McDaniel press conference on Monday and his takeaways following the loss in Carolina on Sunday.
Transcript
00:00So Will Manso from Local 10, I said this earlier,
00:02he got to witness two different worlds over the last 24, 72 hours.
00:08Saturday night, he's in Tallahassee.
00:10He's watching the Canes take care of FSU at Dope Campbell.
00:15And then, you know, an hour ago,
00:17he's at the Mike McDaniel Monday press conference.
00:21Which one of those was more entertaining, Will?
00:25Yeah, I would say Saturday night was probably more entertaining.
00:28I think though today was probably more insightful as to, you know,
00:32what a mess the golfers are right now.
00:34I mean, no matter what Mike says, I mean, what's he going to say, right?
00:36Like I always tell people like, oh, did you ask him the tough questions people ask me?
00:40I'm like, we asked him the questions.
00:41But I mean, the answers are all going to be the same.
00:43This team right now is playing bad football.
00:45I don't know what else you could say.
00:48And Will, we talked about it.
00:49Was that was 2023 an outlier?
00:52Because it seems we're all excited about that.
00:54But the other four years aren't good.
00:57And this year is embarrassing.
00:59Yeah, I think you get to the point, right?
01:01Where you have to say that, you know, we all think back to the start and how the excitement
01:05and it goes to show two guys, I think, because people, people are critical and fans in particular.
01:10And I get it because you get frustrated.
01:12I'm a fan too.
01:13You know, I get frustrated at the teams I root for when they don't play well.
01:15But it gets personal when people start insulting Mike and his looks and what he wears and the
01:20way he talks.
01:21None of that mattered when they were playing well, winning games and scored 70 points.
01:25Everybody thought it was the coolest thing in the world.
01:27And it goes to show, Janning, is that, you know, when you get figured out, when you don't
01:31adjust in this in this league and when teams figure out, you don't find ways to fix it,
01:36that everything is going to be criticized, whether it's personal, professional, the play,
01:40whatever.
01:41And it's clear that offense have reached that point.
01:43And again, the criticism of Mike McDaniel and this team at the front office and everything
01:46that's coming is fair because this team has been going in the wrong direction now in a
01:50few years running.
01:51What did he have to say today, by the way, at the press conference?
01:54I know you say, you know, and fans are always the same way.
01:57Whatever you ask is never going to be enough because what they really want you to do is
02:00scream at him.
02:01You should quit.
02:02You should be fired.
02:03You stink.
02:04Pull back your team.
02:05That's what they wanted to scream.
02:06But anytime we've had someone on who, you know, coaches back when they were having,
02:10you know, difficulties, people always text in, oh, you don't ask any tough questions.
02:14Like, wait, you want me just to berate the guy?
02:16Cause that's what you're doing on the text line.
02:18Like, that's not the way it works.
02:19But what, what did he say today?
02:21Did he seem to have any answers for anything?
02:23Did he, um, did he take the onus of the performance on himself?
02:28Like what, what was his, uh, vibe?
02:31I mean, the vibe is this, he takes blame for it.
02:33I think, you know, I asked him straight up and others as well, but I asked him like,
02:36what you say preparation is there during the week, but it doesn't show up on game day.
02:40He has said that now multiple times after losses, how in the world are you not seeing
02:45that the preparation isn't there and you're thinking it is, and it doesn't show up.
02:48And his answer is, look, it falls on me somewhere along the line.
02:51It's not working.
02:52You know, those are things that fall on me and we have to communicate.
02:55And that starts with me.
02:56It starts with the staff, but he said he has full confidence in the staff and players.
03:00Look there, he and other players as well, Jalen Phillips, Malik Washington, others
03:03discussed today.
03:04There's no finger pointing going on.
03:05At least they're not saying that.
03:07And I think it's natural in a locker room of 53 players and a bunch of coaches and a
03:10head coach that people start looking and saying, you know what?
03:13I did my job yesterday.
03:14Those other guys didn't do their job.
03:16You know, I think this team has been so bad guys, so many areas that I don't think anybody
03:20can look in the mirror and feel pretty good.
03:22I just don't.
03:23I mean, I know two have played well yesterday, but they're going to be things he looks at
03:26particularly that last drive, but when they had the last chance that they didn't do
03:29well, there isn't a single player on this team can wake up in the morning and say, ah, I'm
03:34doing great.
03:35I don't care about anybody else.
03:36They got to figure it out because right now, collectively, and this is what McDaniel said,
03:40starting with himself, they're not doing enough and they need to find a way to do something
03:44to change this.
03:45And did he address, did he say anything about the run defense?
03:48It's because giving up a hundred is not bad.
03:51Giving up 200 to one human, that's embarrassing.
03:55Embarrassing.
03:56Especially, look, the classic line of no disrespect, and here comes the disrespect right after
04:01you say it.
04:02No disrespect to Rico Donald, but he's a backup for a reason.
04:05He's a good football player and he runs hard and credit to him having a great game, but
04:09there's no reason in the world that he should run for 208 yards against the Dolphins.
04:12I mean, that's embarrassing.
04:13So to answer your question, Shannon, yeah, he said that a lot of it stemmed from communication.
04:17It's not an individual that's not doing their job.
04:20It's maybe an individual and a group thinking they're doing their job, but they're being
04:24told the wrong thing.
04:25So it's almost like the coaches and the players, they're not seeing eye to eye on certain things
04:30in a communication way that's leading to mistakes on the field.
04:34And they have to look at the film, and they did today, and say, okay, where are things getting
04:38lost in translation, where that guy's not on his assignment, this guy's not on his assignment,
04:42and then it causes total miscommunication on where things need to be.
04:46To his credit, again, I'll say it over and over, they take the blame.
04:49He takes the blame.
04:51Weaver and those guys, as a staff, need to make sure they're players in the right position,
04:55but also as individuals, as players, you need to know where your assignment is.
04:58And you can't just leave your assignment or not be where you need to be because it leads
05:02to the mess that we saw yesterday.
05:04I think it's commendable, Will, that they take the blame.
05:07I heard McDaniel's press conference yesterday.
05:09I was reading the quotes today.
05:11He puts himself first because I think it's the right thing to do.
05:14If not, everybody's holding him accountable.
05:17But at the end of the day, I don't think this roster is very talented.
05:20I think we're seeing that.
05:21It's part of what you were just talking about.
05:24I don't think a lot of the young guys that were drafted are very talented based on statistics
05:29and numbers and evaluations.
05:31Is there any part of this team, because we thought it was going to be the front seven.
05:35That's been proven wrong.
05:37Is there any part of this team where you look at and you say, that's something you can build
05:42with moving forward?
05:44Maybe Devon HN, right?
05:45Is that the only player?
05:47No, there's pieces.
05:49Look, Patrick Paul has showed some glintzes he could give to the offensive lineman.
05:52There are players defensively, I think.
05:53It's just, but again, Solana, we're talking about individuals.
05:56As a collective, they just aren't good.
05:58And I think we could reach the point where we could feel comfortable saying it as more
06:02fact and opinion that this isn't a very good football team.
06:04It hasn't been constructed well.
06:06And unfortunately, a lot of the problems that are having are problems that we as media and
06:11also fans, look, we're fans as well.
06:12And then fans calling into you and tweeting and doing all this stuff have seen the construction
06:17of this roster in the offseason and the money spent and allocated wasn't very good.
06:22There was concerns in particular areas, i.e. the offensive line, i.e. the defense in certain
06:26parts of the defense that aren't very good, that money and resources weren't allocated
06:31maybe in the best way possible.
06:33And that falls on one guy who doesn't talk today, and that's Chris Greer.
06:36You know, and we talk plenty of times in the show about Chris Greer, the job he's done
06:39or hasn't done.
06:40And while Mike McDaniel sits there and takes all the bullets and has to listen to all this
06:43stuff and gets ripped again, a lot of it rightfully so, you're only as good as the
06:49product you're given and the players are given.
06:50You can only make so much.
06:51What's the old saying with you?
06:52You give me the ingredients.
06:53I got to cook it, but I'm only as good as the ingredients I get it.
06:56I think that's what's happening with the Dolphins.
06:58Like Mike McDaniel can sit there, yell and scream or change things, bench guys, move
07:02guys around.
07:03I don't think it's going to make a damn difference.
07:05I just don't think this is a very good football team.
07:08And Will, can you, should we read into it this, like this way, where the Patriots went
07:13into Buffalo and beat Josh Allen in Buffalo, something that Mike McDaniel and Tua has never
07:18done.
07:18Um, the commanders with Dan Quinn and Jane Daniels winning playoff games last year, going
07:24to the NFC championship game.
07:25Just, you're looking at Shane Steichen, what Shane Steichen is doing.
07:29Oh yeah.
07:29You must be pissed about Daniel Jones, but Shane Steichen is doing in three years being
07:34there in Indy.
07:36And now we're here five years, six years or two or five years with McDaniel and we're
07:40still just spinning wheels.
07:42Yeah.
07:42And I think that's, and that's a great point because I think that's where you look and
07:45look, I look at it from a giant's perspective, Brian Dable, people talk about the job he's
07:49done or hasn't done and whether he's lost a locker, none of it matters.
07:52He's not, he's not getting the best of his players, whatever it is.
07:54Your job is to get, again, those ingredients that you have, that roster you have and try
07:58to make the most of it.
07:59They're not maximizing whatever talent they have is not being maximized.
08:02Could they use more talent?
08:03Absolutely.
08:03I think this roster isn't comprised the way it probably should be.
08:07But when you see players bounce around and go to other places, you mentioned Daniel Jones
08:10and have success.
08:11You look back at where they were, you say, maybe that person wasn't doing the job.
08:15And I wonder how much the day that it moves on, the Dolphins move on from Mike McDaniel
08:19in this, this regime, will we see the tours of the world go off and have enormous success
08:24somewhere else and win games.
08:25Other players as well on defense that have maybe struggled to have success.
08:28We've certainly seen it before with certain guys.
08:30And I'm curious if that's going to be the case because sometimes the message gets lost.
08:35The thing that I keep going back to guys that Mike McDaniel talks about preparation is
08:39there.
08:39We think it's there.
08:40It doesn't show up.
08:41Well, maybe the message is just getting lost in translation.
08:43Maybe the players are tuning out that message.
08:46And when that happens, that's on the head coach.
08:48And that's probably a sign that that head coach's future is in that particular place.
08:52McDaniel here is probably not a very good future.
08:55We're up against it, Will.
08:56But how was Saturday night in Tallahassee?
08:58Are the Canes the best team in the nation, in your opinion?
09:01I think them in Ohio State.
09:03I mean, I think I look at those two teams.
09:05I think because they have, I think, the best balance.
09:07I think they have the best as far as offense, defense, special teams, all the areas, the
09:12depth.
09:13The Canes have finally reached that point where they have it.
09:15I do think they're one of the best teams in the country.
09:16I think they show it.
09:17Obviously, the one thing they did do, and they haven't shown it enough, is the killer instinct,
09:22that mentality to really put away teams.
09:25Sometimes that's easier said than done.
09:26Like, there was a lot of criticism from fans, again, about Mario and down the seat on the
09:30fourth quarter.
09:31I honestly, guys, didn't see anything that bothered me that much.
09:33Your line, your bread and butter is that big line you built.
09:36Their job and what you expect from the grind out Florida State and get yards and first
09:41downs in the fourth quarter, it didn't happen.
09:43And that's okay.
09:43Credit to the Knowles.
09:44I don't think it was a coaching issue.
09:46I don't think it was a, they didn't try and harvest.
09:48I think there's just a mentality that they're going to get as it goes along where they just
09:52have to just impose their will and finish teams because more often than not, they're
09:56going to be the better football team for the opponent on the field.
09:59And I think that's been the case in every game this year.
10:01And I think that's going to be the case in pretty much every game until they get to
10:04the college football playoffs.
10:06I saw on your social media, you went to Waffle House twice up in Tallahassee.
10:10Lori and I went to Waffle House driving home from Tampa yesterday.
10:14That's, that's good stuff there.
10:16Three times, but I will say this.
10:18I kind of cheated because our hotel parking lot was connected to a Waffle House.
10:22So it would be easy.
10:23I just rolled out of bed and rolled into the Waffle House.
10:25Oh, that's how I judge hotels.
10:27In Mount Tallahassee, it's just, you roll, I rolled out of bed.
10:30I rolled into the Waffle House and then I left to the stadium.
10:32What'd you get?
10:33That was my itinerary.
10:34I would get that all American breakfast.
10:36The one that, uh, that's a hash brown, scrambled eggs.
10:40Uh, the waffle, obviously the first day I got just plain waffle.
10:43Then I went peanut butter.
10:44Cause I love a good peanut butter on a waffle.
10:46Interesting.
10:47Interesting.
10:48Yeah.
10:48And sausage.
10:50Sausage happens to be delicious.
10:52I'm not a big sausage guy, but they make the patties like a, a patty over the link and
10:58it, their sausage is fantastic.
11:00Yep.
11:011399 too.
11:02Listen, the company was very happy when I turned that expensive for today.
11:05And they're like, you spent a hundred dollars in eating for two days.
11:07That's awesome.
11:08For three, for four meals.
11:10Did you guys see what the.
11:12I was going to ask, what does he eat grits?
11:16You know, I, I have had grits and I don't mind them, but I always get hash browns instead
11:20when I'm there, like, cause they give you the option.
11:22Like, do you want grits or hash browns?
11:23I'm like, no, I'm a hash brown guy.
11:24Yeah.
11:24Waffle house.
11:24You got to do the hash browns and, and maybe smothered and covered Crowder.
11:28I can't see it.
11:29Post 50.
11:30I can't be smothered.
11:30If not, I'm going to be smothered in the bathroom.
11:32I can't.
11:34You didn't miss the game.
11:38All right.
11:38Well, we'll see you at the, uh, Panthers tomorrow.
11:40I'm guessing, right?
11:41Well, we will.
11:42Yeah.
11:42I'll be there tomorrow.
11:43We'll be there going live and, uh, enjoying the festivities.
11:46We will be doing the show there.
11:47So we'll see you then.
11:47Thanks, Will.
11:48All right.
11:48I'll swing by.
11:49All right.
11:49There you go.
11:50Will Manso from local 10, big fan of the waffle house as am I.
11:55Anytime I'm bummed, there's just no waffle houses around me.
11:58There's the one in Davie.
12:01Yeah.
12:01And there's the one in, uh, next to the old radio station that they built in Miami gardens.
12:07Problem down here.
12:08They have first watch and they have a lot of cute little breakfast spots.
12:12Nothing like a waffle house though, man.
12:14Like you walk into that waffle house.
12:16It's just like, Oh, this feels.
12:19Listen, there's a, there's 877,000 waffle houses in Atlanta.
12:24I've been to waffle house.
12:25No, that's the thing.
12:25There's just not enough down here.
12:27So it's novel.
12:28So every time we go to Tampa to see DJ, like driving home or something, I try to hit a
12:32waffle house.
12:33Cause they don't have them down here, but you're right.
12:35Like most places, they're literally just like every four blocks.
12:40But have you been to first watch?
12:42I love first watch.
12:43Oh, if there's a waffle house next to a first watch, you know, which direction you're going
12:48to go.
12:48They just opened.
12:50Lie.
12:51Lie.
12:51They just opened up the first watch across the street from my house.
12:55Literally opened up like two weeks ago.
12:58The line at 7 a.m.
13:01Is insane, man.
13:02Insane.
13:03That place is so good though.
13:04You've got to order on the way to go.
13:06Then you get it.
13:07And then you just kind of sit outside on a bench and eat it.
13:10I don't like that.
13:11I like looking at the menu.
13:12Well, the only thing waffle house is lacking right now is avocado toast.
13:16I looked over that menu six or seven times.
13:18I could not find it anywhere, so I had to get a waffle.
13:21You think anything there is fresh?
13:24Everything at waffle house is fresh.
13:25You watch them cook it.
13:27You think they're going to pick up avocados every morning?
13:30That lady back there.
13:31Well, no.
13:31They obviously haven't.
13:33But once they add avocado toast, look out.
13:37With the six teeth, they're going to get everything seasoning.
13:40Avocado toast house.
13:42I ain't talking about it.
