00:00In an exhibition, the unbeaten interim champ and mandatory challenger for Geron Millett's IBF 140-pound title.
00:10Slick southpaw, good buddies with tonight's headliner, Mike Tyson, both from Brownsville, Brooklyn.
00:16And we look forward to seeing more of this rising star on Showtime, Zapp Judah,
00:22then at a heavyweight mismatch between David Tua and Shane Sutcliffe, Samoan slugger David Tua,
00:27dominated from the opening bell, fired a series of explosive left hooks,
00:32and as expected, ended matters early against Canadian journeyman Shane Sutcliffe.
00:36TKO round two.
00:38Tua upped his record to 35-1 with 30 knockouts and maintained his number one ranking in the IBF.
00:45For Sutcliffe, his fourth straight TKO loss, a convincing win for David Tua.
00:49He protested to referee Shane 80, but it was all academic.
00:53An overmatched opponent was Sutcliffe and David Tua with the victory.
00:59We're at the MGM Grand Garden here in Las Vegas, the scene for yet another Mike Tyson comeback fight.
01:05Tyson, who hasn't fought since January due to his recent and forced hiatus, returns to the ring against Orland Norris.
01:12We appreciate the fact that you're with us tonight.
01:17We are getting ready for the big main event, Mike Tyson versus Orland Norris.
01:32Coming up, our main event, Mike Tyson versus Orland Norris.
01:35As fight time approaches, both Tyson and Orris offer their views on each other.
01:44He's a good fighter.
01:45He's been champion for a long time in his division, and I'm looking forward to a good fight,
01:49and I know he's going to be ready to fight, and I'm just looking forward to doing well.
01:53He's a great fighter.
01:54You know, a great puncher.
01:56You know, he's, I mean, one of the prolific punchers, I mean, I've ever seen.
02:01You know, that's what I have to turn into a boxing match.
02:03I'm just, I'm a ferocious fighter.
02:05I mean, it's vicious and ferocious.
02:07I used to see him laugh.
02:09I'll be in this tremendous shape.
02:11I'll be in tremendous focus, and I'm whether he's throwing punches with bad intentions.
02:19I know he's strong, so I can't stand in front of him, you know, the whole fight.
02:23You know, so I'm going to, you know, move, use my speed, you know, use my brain, you know,
02:30and maybe frustrate him along the way, you know.
02:32When people fight me, there are two things they do.
02:35They either run, or they either just come out fighting like a bat out of hell.
02:39They just want to be in great shape, and it's spectacular, and knock them out good.
02:47Well, we're getting set for all the pre-fight activities here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
02:53And we're set to throw it up to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
03:00And ladies and gentlemen, before we present our main event fighters to enter the ring,
03:04at this time we ask you to rise for the singing of our national anthem.
03:11In the ring to lead us, ladies and gentlemen,
03:14please welcome the talented island Death Jam recording artist.
03:18Now by the hand for Kelly Price.
03:23Oh, say can you see
03:38By the dawn's early light
03:46What so proudly we held
03:52At the twilight's last gleaming
03:59Whose broad stripes and bright stars
04:07To the perilous fight
04:13O'er the ramparts we watched
04:19Were so gallantly streaming
04:25And the rocket's red glare
04:27And the rocket's red glare
04:31The bombs bursting in air
04:37Gave proof
04:41Through the night
04:43That our flag was still there
04:47Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
05:05O'er the land and of the free
05:09O'er the land and of the free
05:16And the home
05:19Of the brave
05:23Thank you very much to Kelly Bryce.
05:39Well, this crowd is certainly revved up.
05:41It looks like a sellout.
05:42Hello again, everybody.
05:43Steve Albert ringside.
05:44Welcome to another chapter in the continuing saga of Mike Tyson.
05:47Stormy chaotic controversial.
05:49Just a few words to describe the career of a man once considered
05:52The greatest fighter of his generation
05:54And he's still enigmatic after all these years
05:57After being in the public eye for about 15 years
05:59Tyson approaches the twilight of his career
06:02The question is what will happen from this point on?
06:04Can he regain the championship or is he a shot fighter?
06:08And what about his opponent tonight?
06:10While some feel Orland Norris is a reasonably good test
06:12And a decent measuring stick
06:14Others including myself think he's a relatively safe opponent for Tyson
06:19However, he's certainly a wily veteran
06:21And not the type to lie down or be intimidated
06:24With that, let me bring on my ringside partners
06:25First to fight Dr. Ferdie Pacheco
06:27And Ferdie, what can Tyson realistically accomplish
06:30At this stage of his career?
06:31I think he's done two things
06:33He's got to regain his credibility as a title fighter
06:36I mean as a
06:37He's got to fight well tonight
06:39And justify his title aspirations
06:42And the second thing is he's got to win back the public's heart
06:45They don't like him
06:46They don't like all this craziness
06:47Now he's got to settle down
06:48And be the old loveable Mike Tyson
06:50If ever there was one
06:51At least to return to society
06:54And be a decent good guy
06:56Which I think he is
06:57So I think that's what he's got to prove
06:59He's got to be a good fighter
07:00And he's got to return to normality
07:02Appears as if he's trying to make an effort
07:05In that direction of being a nice guy
07:07We turn to our other partner here
07:08Bobby Ches
07:09What kind of test does Orland Norris provide
07:11For Mike Tyson
07:12Considering the fact that not long ago
07:14Norris was his sparring partner for Francois Botha
07:17Does that have any bearing?
07:18The fact that he's a sparring partner for Francois Botha
07:20Has absolutely nothing to do with tonight's fight
07:22Botha was training to fight Tyson
07:23Orland wasn't
07:24Orland I'm sure has chosen the proper sparring partners
07:26They'll have something to do with his performance here tonight
07:28What I expect after having said that is this
07:30He has to come in here in the first round
07:32In the first two or three minutes
07:33He has to get his pound of flesh
07:34He has to get some respect for Mike Tyson
07:36Or Mike's going to run right through him
07:38Because that's Mike's way
07:39He wants to make Mike miss
07:40And make him pay
07:41And take this fight late
07:42The longer it goes
07:43The better it is for Orland Norris
07:44And he knows that
07:45So what he wants to do is box
07:47Use a good jab
07:48Counterpunch
07:49But make Mike miss
07:50And land his own bomb
07:51We've got two short heavyweights
07:52Both in the 30s
07:53Let's get your keys to victory
07:55For both fighters tonight
07:56Let's start with Mike Tyson
07:57Mike Tyson
07:58Mike Tyson needs to work
07:59In behind that jab
08:00He used to use it all the time
08:01And also not to wait
08:02He can't wait
08:03He's got to punch first
08:04And keep his hands moving on the inside
08:05And not let anybody tie him up
08:07Here Francois Both
08:08As soon as he moves forward into Mike
08:09Mike fires back
08:10Not allowing both of them to come in
08:12Because what Botha likes to do
08:13Is come in and tie Mike up
08:15Not allow him to use his hands
08:17Here we'll see what Mike does
08:19On the way in
08:20He hits Botha
08:21And then he fires on the inside
08:22Keeps the hands working
08:23This is one of the keys for sure
08:25Now he's on the inside
08:26He's not going to allow Botha to tie him up
08:27He fires
08:28Right hand left hook
08:29Another right hand
08:30Now a little later in the fight
08:32Mike he's getting a little better
08:33He's working the rust out
08:34As soon as Botha moves towards him
08:36He throws a little jab
08:37Mike throws a jab
08:38And a classic one-two
08:40With a right hand behind it
08:41And it lights out
08:42Francois Botha
08:43Finishes his night
08:49For Orlan Norris
08:50He's got to use a short jab
08:51He's got to box smart
08:52He can use quick counter punches
08:53And tight defense
08:54He can't let Mike get off with those bombs
08:56Here against Adolfo Washington on the left
08:59Norris jumps in with a left hand
09:00And a right
09:01And he stuns Adolfo
09:02What he does is he jumps back
09:03And no punches come
09:05And what he does
09:06Fires back in
09:07Another left hook and right hand
09:08And then he finishes up
09:09After coming out again
09:10With uppercuts
09:11Keeping Washington off bounce
09:12There's the right hand
09:13That stuns Adolfo
09:14He moves out
09:15Comes back
09:16And moves out again
09:17Another right hand
09:18An uppercut
09:19Keeping his hands high
09:20Doing what he's supposed to
09:21How critical
09:22Are the first 30 to 60 seconds
09:24For both guys
09:25The first 30 to 60 seconds
09:26Is critical for both guys
09:27Orlan Norris once again
09:28He has to get his pound of flesh
09:30He has to get some of Mike's respect
09:31Or he's going to have a hard time beating him
09:33And Mike has to establish
09:34That he is the Iron Mike of old
09:36And he's back
09:37His mind is clear
09:38And his body is working right
09:39All right
09:40We're ready
09:41On this big sports night
09:42That also featured game one
09:43Of the World Series
09:44Perhaps it's only fitting
09:45That we quote the story
09:46Yogi Berra
09:47By saying it's like deja vu
09:49All over again
09:50We get set for the ring entrance
09:52Of Mike Tyson
09:53Following yet another major
09:54Interruption
09:55In his turbulent career
09:56Perhaps we can label this
09:57Chapter four
09:58As Tyson closes in
10:00On this latest
10:01Comeback fight
10:02Comeback fight
10:05And let's take a look
10:06At his opponent
10:07Orlan Norris
10:09Went down to the cruiserweight division in 1993
10:11Won the championship
10:13Defended it four times
10:14And then lost it unexpectedly to Nate Miller
10:17Then in 96 he became a heavyweight again
10:21His best wins at heavyweight over Jesse Ferguson
10:24Oliver McCall
10:25And Tony Tucker
10:26Norris was ranked in the top five
10:28During Tyson's reign as undisputed champion in the late 1980s
10:33But they never even came close to squaring off
10:38And this goes under the heading of only in boxing
10:40Norris' advisor Mike Marley told me that
10:43They were sent Orlan's robe and boxing trumps
10:46The robe you see right there this afternoon
10:48Keep in mind this is the biggest fight of Norris' life
10:51The trunks were too big
10:54So at the last minute they had to bring in a seamstress
10:58To make the proper alterations
11:00As I said only in boxing
11:04Making the long slow walk to the ring
11:09In a few seconds the crowd will get a chance to see him
11:11They don't see him quite yet
11:13So we'll see what kind of reaction that provokes
11:16Walking into the famous night train song
11:21Which was famous for Sonny Liston's music
11:27He's won his last three coming off an easy first round knockout
11:32Of British journeyman Pele Reid in London
11:35In June
11:36He just chopped the taller reed down with a vicious barrage to the head
11:39Midway through the opening round
11:40But it was no match
11:41Proud
11:47Now finally getting to see Orlan Norris
11:49Here he comes
11:50We can now see him for the first time
11:52Boy that's a long walk from the dressing room isn't it
11:55Not exactly a shattering ovation is it
11:57No
11:59Very quiet reaction to the entrance of
12:01Orlan Norris
12:03Fighting an identity problem here against Mike Tyson
12:06By the way
12:09Of course he's not the star
12:12He will be if he wins
12:16Birdie and Tyson's heyday his ring walk for opponents
12:19Could be a harrowing experience
12:21Obviously he's lost some of that
12:22That luster and mystique
12:24But you get the feeling Orlan an old pro
12:26Not really affected by by all the fanfare
12:28For the last few weeks
12:29In the old days Tyson was like Liston
12:31His opponents were knocked out by the ring walk
12:32His ring walk was so intimidating
12:35That they were out before it started
12:37But now he's just another guy coming in
12:39Orland is a very big veteran
12:41Used to this kind of stuff
12:43How ironic that Tyson's been identified with Sonny Liston
12:46And Orland Norris comes into Sonny's song
12:50Night Train
12:54Well there are two attributes that come in handy
12:57Versus Tyson defense and a good chin
12:59Norris has both
13:00But at his age and if Tyson stays within his game plan
13:04A lot of people feel that Orland Norris
13:06Could be in trouble
13:09We'll soon find out
13:11Well
13:13We have our cameras perched and ready in Mike Tyson's dressing room
13:15There it is
13:17There's one of his side kicks
13:18They call him Crocodile
13:20He does a lot of yapping
13:22And here comes Jay Bright
13:24The crowd reacting already
13:26They see it on the big screens here
13:27Dave Bright his sole link to the custom auto days
13:31I'm sure you'll be seeing Tommy Brooks who came on board prior to the both the fight
13:36Well in the past a Tyson entrance an event unto itself
13:40How many fights did he win by virtue of his ring walk he would strike fear in his opponents even before the first bell
13:45But they're not really the case anymore
13:49The former undisputed heavyweight champ Mike Tyson has fought only three times in the last four years
13:55Most recently in January right here when he knocked out both in the fifth
13:59Tyson looking rusty was behind on the scorecards
14:01Before the dramatic resounding knockout John Travolta and many of the celebrities on their feet getting ready as he gets closer
14:11Wayne Newton
14:13A fixture here in Las Vegas
14:18Charlie Sheen
14:19On hand
14:22Celebrity faces in the crowd he always brings him out Tommy Hearns the hit man on hand
14:35Pierce Brosnan
14:37Bond James Bond
14:38Tyson's advisor Shelly Finkel told me Mike's really got it together
14:42Well he definitely has a calmer attitude he's friendlier
14:46The crowd again reacting as he gets closer to the ring
14:49He's been granting interviews signing autographs smiling doing open workouts
14:54Either he's had an epiphany or somebody has really gotten to him
14:57Word is his hand speed and power remain intact timing is the question
15:11The result of course of the repeated layoffs and advancing age
15:16And now he finally makes it upstairs going through the ropes and out of the canvas
15:23And hearing it from the crowd
15:24It's not an overwhelming cheer but it's certainly in in Tyson's favor
15:49And we are set for the tail of the tape
15:50At 34 Norris 15 months older than Tyson both under six feet almost eye to eye that's rare for both
15:59At 218 Norris is three pounds below his heaviest ever Tyson exactly where he was his last fight
16:05And a slight one in reach advantage Tyson
16:08Key rules no standing eight count no three knocked down a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round
16:13No contest before the end of the fourth they go to the cards
16:17If an accidental headbutt occurs after the end of round four
16:21So here at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas Nevada
16:26We are getting ready for the main event
16:29Another comeback fight for Mike Tyson as he faces Orla Norris

19:35Once again a referee in charge Richard Steele
19:38Okay you guys I spoke to you both in the dressing room
19:40I'm cautioning you again
19:42Obey my commands at all times
19:44Keep all your punches in front of the man
19:45Watch the low blow
19:47Shake hands and good luck
19:48Mike Tyson should look sharper tonight
19:49Look for him to be the aggressor
19:50I think we'll go after the defensive minded
19:52Orlin Norris
19:53Norris
19:54But the feeling is Norris will look to survive by grabbing and holding
19:56and he'll try to box
19:57But Norris is trainer Abel Sanchez
19:59says
20:00When it when it really strikes
20:01He's a good fighter
20:02He's a good fighter
20:03Do you want to fight?
20:05Get all your punches in front of the man
20:06Watch the low blow
20:07Shake hands and good luck
20:08Mike Tyson should look sharper tonight
20:09Look for him to be the aggressor
20:10I think we'll go after the defensive minded
20:13Orlin Norris
20:14But the feeling is Norris will look to
20:16survive by grabbing and holding
20:18And he'll try to box
20:19But Norris is trainer Abel Sanchez
20:20And then again Norris is
20:22trainer Abel Sanchez says when
20:23it when it really gets tough in
20:24there Tyson won't be moving and
20:25throwing combinations he'll
20:27revert to what he does best
20:28throwing bombs.
20:29We'll see.
20:31Richard Steele controversial
20:34referee the third man and here
20:35we go.
20:36The call for round one and Tyson
20:38comes right out with a straight
20:39left.
20:43Orleans a great defensive
20:44fighter.
20:44Good offensive fighters.
20:45Well not with the power Mike
20:46but he probably a little quicker
20:48very sneaky good movement and
20:49if he has to go in the distance
20:50Steve he can go and do the ten
20:52rounds no problem.
20:54Norris heavily muscle not quite as
20:56defined and carved as Tyson.
20:59We're not used to being on the
21:00same eye level as each other.
21:03Both are heavily muscled in the
21:05same muscle type.
21:09Good left hook to the belly by
21:10Mike Tyson right there.
21:11Tyson going to the body.
21:16This is going to be something
21:17new Mike's used to springing up
21:18into big men.
21:18Now he has a short man the same
21:20size right in front of him.
21:25Great.
21:32Notice right there.
21:33Orland Norris also grabbed Mike's
21:35left arm right inside and walked
21:36him counterclockwise away from
21:38that left hook.
21:40At least Mike was trying to jab
21:41more than he did in the other
21:42fights.
21:43They've trained him to start to
21:44come in with a jab.
21:45Well he's coming in with a jab.
21:47And Norris boxing throwing the
21:49jab and.
21:51Tyson holds.
21:55Norris very cool.
21:57He's not at all upset.
21:58He's just boxing.
21:59He's not at all intimidated by the
22:02moment.
22:03Not at all.
22:05Heavy right hands a series of
22:07rights to the head and body by
22:08Mike Tyson getting a roar from the
22:10crowd.
22:13Here's that jab of Norris again.
22:17Orland still hasn't stopped and
22:18picked his spot.
22:19He's looking for the spot to get
22:20that pound of flesh.
22:21He's got to hit Mike and sting on
22:23little so we can get some respect.
22:24Then he can implement his game plan
22:26much easier.
22:27Norris his best weapon.
22:28The double left hook.
22:30There's a straight left hand there
22:31by Mike Tyson.
22:33And then he follows it up with a
22:34combination and a right uppercut.
22:39Orland's very hard to hit clean.
22:40Keeps his hands high and tight.
22:42Rolls.
22:42Uses his shoulders to roll with the
22:43punches and block them.
22:45Mike is not in condition to go good
22:47ten rounds at good pace.
22:48Could be interesting after we get past
22:50five and six.
22:51Orland's one of these kind of guys
22:52that's fought everybody.
22:53He's not intimidated at all.
22:54I mean he's doing this just like
22:56if he's fighting any anybody else
22:58for the championship.
23:00I don't know what I see in Tyson yet.
23:01He's coming in with a jab.
23:05It looks like he's not bending from
23:06the waist enough.
23:07He's certainly not moving his head
23:09enough.
23:09He's still standing straight up.
23:10See he's not bending over like he
23:11used to and coil and spring.
23:15Hunter get out of there.
23:16Great.
23:17Step back to me.
23:18Norris a consummate defensive
23:19fighter.
23:20Good boxer counter punch.
23:21Oh man.
23:22Don't tell me we're starting that.
23:26Getting cautioned by Richard
23:28Steele as we head for the bell.
23:29That was a punch while they were
23:31talking.
23:31Oh and he hits him after the
23:35foul and Norris goes down and here
23:36we go again.
23:40Tyson hit Norris after the
23:42foul.
23:43And let's see what Steele says.
23:45He hits him after the bell.
23:46He hits him after the bell.
23:47He hits him after the bell.
23:48That's two points.
23:49Oh really?
23:50That's two points.
23:51Oh really?
23:52He could have lost the whole fight.
23:53Two fights.
23:55Two points.
23:56Put that on American Express.
23:57What difference does that make?
23:58And just like that the crowd is
23:59turned on Tyson.
23:59And just like that the crowd is
24:00turned on Tyson.
24:01You gotta listen up.
24:02That's cause he's two points.
24:04Listen.
24:05And once again Richard Steele in
24:28the center of a hurricane.
24:30Mike Marley in the background.
24:32Norris' advisor is screaming at the
24:33top of his lungs.
24:34It's a disqualification because he
24:38hit him after the bell and I
24:39clean it up for you.
24:40I'd like to see that again because
24:42it almost looked to me like it was
24:45at the same time as him saying
24:47break and the putt's going.
24:48Time now.
24:49Now this is politics now.
24:51The bell is rung for round two but
24:53nothing's happening.
24:54Norris in the corner shaking up.
24:57Able Sanchez sends his knee.
25:04He's looking at his leg.
25:05He's saying his knee is hurting him.
25:06This is about a knee.
25:07This is not about anything else.
25:08It's the right day of Norris.
25:10Unbelievable.
25:11This is not about his head.
25:12Dr. Flip Pomatsky the man with the goatee.
25:27You're right there and the knee and you can't continue.
25:30That's it. It's me. He can't continue.
25:33And he cannot continue.
25:35Oh, man.
25:36I can't make him continue.
25:37You know what?
25:38I can't make him continue.
25:39Now he goes over to the executive director
25:41of the Nevada Athletic Commission, Mark Ratten.
25:52Can you believe this after one round?
25:55I can believe anything in Tyson land.
25:57It doesn't seem like we're ever going to have a normal fight.
26:00There's Elias Donham.
26:02Boy, somebody's mad as heck.
26:04From the Nevada Athletic Commission,
26:06they're conferring with all of the guys there now.
26:09Why would a blow on the head hurt your knee?
26:12I mean, you know, what?
26:14Well, when he went down, he made it.
26:16Let's watch it.
26:17He made it slammed on his knee when he went down.
26:19Well, let's see.
26:20I want to hear him say, break,
26:22and at the time, watch Tyson's arm.
26:25Here he is.
26:27See?
26:28Oh, it's buckled.
26:30Yeah.
26:31You can see his leg buckled as he went down.
26:36I'll tell you what, though.
26:37I'd like to see it at regular speed with the sound,
26:40because I think you hit him on the bell,
26:42right on the bell.
26:45That's the way I see it, Bobby.
26:47I think that was a simultaneous thing,
26:49just as it was happening.
26:50Here comes Mark Ratner.
26:52Let's listen.
27:03There's a lot of scurrying in the ring.
27:06Uh-oh.
27:07They better put protection up here.
27:09Here comes security.
27:10But we've seen this scene before with a Tyson fight.
27:12Let's not see it again.
27:13We're forming a circle around Tyson.
27:18And you can hear the crowd chanting its displeasure now.
27:23And things are getting ugly again.
27:26There's Shelly Finkel, Tyson's advisor.
27:28Look at the amount of security in the ring.
27:34Well, everybody seems to be in the dark.
27:50Well, I've never seen anything stopped because of a knee injury.
27:54Have you?
27:55I haven't.
27:56Nope.
27:57And I've been in it for 40 years.
27:59Well, we're dispatching the fight doctor into the ring.
28:05Maybe he can lend some insight into what's going on when he talks to people.
28:11Meanwhile, they're taping up the injured right knee of Orland Norris,
28:15which buckled when he went down.
28:18At the end of round one, he was hit.
28:22It seemed after the bell by Mike Tyson.
28:25Mike Marley Norris' advisor screaming that it should be a disqualification and Norris should be the winner.
28:35You know, Steve, I got the impression that Mike was trying to jam the left uppercut up as the bell was going off.
28:41I don't know that it was just a that it was a clean left hook after the bell conscious thought.
28:46I really don't.
28:47I mean, I'd like to see it again.
28:49It just all happened too fast.
28:50And when you start a punch, it's hard.
28:53But it's like the kid who cried wolf, Bobby.
28:58It's like, how many times can we see this happening with Mike Tyson?
29:04We will take another look.
29:06We'll show it again.
29:07But we don't want to leave the ring right now.
29:11Saga continues never an easy day.
29:18We want to stay right with this picture because anything can happen.
29:24But we will definitely show you a replay of the end of the first round.
29:29Again, I'm sure you'll see it several times again before this thing is over.
29:34So once again, Mike Tyson and controversy come together.
29:42Wish I could hear what Shelley Finkley was just saying.
29:49Well, let's find out what's going on.
29:51We'll get Jimmy Lennon Jr. up there in the ring to make an announcement.
29:56Take it, Jimmy.
29:58Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
30:00This bout has been stopped after round number one due to an accidental foul,
30:06which occurred after the bell rang.
30:09This bout is officially ruled at this time a no contest.
30:21Well, you heard it.
30:23The bout has been officially declared a no contest.
30:27The fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco, is with Mike Tyson.
30:30Ferdy?
30:31All right.
30:32Another night.
30:33Another Tyson night.
30:34Give me your view of what happened.
30:36Did you throw the punch after you heard the bell?
30:38Well, you know, you were there.
30:39You saw it.
30:40It was simultaneous with the bell.
30:42And the punch wasn't that devastating.
30:43He could have continued.
30:44He quit on his stool.
30:45But I'll take him again in my next fight.
30:47I'll fight him right away.
30:48Well, that's fight him in December.
30:49I'd love to.
30:50All right.
30:51Let me ask you something.
30:52How could a blow to the jaw hurt his knee?
30:55Listen.
30:56All right.
30:57He knew the next round I was going to put that heat on him.
30:59He wasn't ready for that heat.
31:00All right.
31:01Yeah.
31:02Shelly, can they do something legally to screw this up?
31:04Can they talk disqualification?
31:06No.
31:07They did already.
31:08They ruled it a no contest.
31:09It shouldn't have been that.
31:10But they did.
31:11We're ready to go back whenever Mike wants.
31:13And Mike said immediately.
31:14Your disappointment, I'm sure, was great.
31:16You've trained well.
31:17You're ready for a good fight.
31:19You're ready to come back in December against anybody.
31:21I feel great.
31:22And I just want to continue to fight one fight at a time and fight around four more fights
31:26and fight for the championship.
31:28Yes, sir.
31:29All right.
31:30If this so happens that it falls in December, you could fight this guy again, would you be
31:36willing, Shelly, to fight for him?
31:37Of course.
31:38Of course.
31:39Not me.
31:40Mike would fight him.
31:41All right.
31:42Hey, you and I have been around a long time together.
31:46You feel your snake bit of something every time something happens.
31:49God, every time you come up here, something crazy happens.
31:51Well, listen.
31:52All praise be to Allah.
31:53I don't want to dwell on this anymore.
31:54I just want to say hi to my friend, the Smith family out there in Gilbert, Arizona.
31:59I like to say hi to Tiger Woods.
32:00We trained together with Keith Clevin.
32:02And he didn't.
32:03I wanted to score another knockout because you were successful.
32:05And I like to say hi to my friend, Chuck Vito.
32:07And get well soon.
32:08I love you, brother.
32:09Peace.
32:10All right.
32:11I think that helps everybody else.
32:12Let's go back to Steve Albert at ringside.
32:15Well, just got an official explanation from the other ringside position here telling us that Norris twisted his knee when he fell.
32:25And there you see the results of it all.
32:28And I believe underneath this, Steve, there's a scar from some previous surgery and injury.
32:36So once again, controversy and Mike Tyson are connected as this fight ends after one round.
32:44We're going to take another listen to exactly how it sounded at the end of the first round.
32:51He definitely hit him after the bell.
33:03He definitely hit him after the bell.
33:04I don't know if he heard it.
33:05I don't know what registered.
33:06It was definitely after the bell.
33:08It wasn't long after the bell, but it was after the bell.
33:13We've got.
33:14We've got to find out if Mike Tyson heard that bell.
33:20We've got to find out.
33:21We've got to find out.
33:22We've got to find out.
33:23We've got to find out.
33:24Unbelievable.
33:25They stopped the fight after round one on an accidental foul.
33:30They call it a no contest.
33:32This thing goes three minutes and it's over.
33:36And it's a lot of befuddled people here.
33:39Ferdy's up there with Orlan Orris now.
33:41Ferdy, how do you feel ending this thing in this bizarre fashion?
33:46I mean, I didn't want to end like this.
33:49I mean, I was doing what I needed to do in the fight.
33:52You know, he hit me clearly after the bell run.
33:56You know, did you hear the bell and then the blow?
33:58Oh, I heard the bell and I was, I was about ready to take a step back to advanced tournament.
34:03You know, but I still was watching him.
34:05But, you know, he threw an uppercut.
34:07Rich still stuck his arm in and then come another uppercut that he caught me with, you know.
34:11But he definitely caught you with one.
34:12Oh, yeah.
34:13He hit me.
34:14He hit me pretty square with him.
34:15I mean, knocked me down.
34:16What do you think happened to your knee?
34:17Why did it give away like that?
34:18Well, I mean, like I said, I was.
34:19The bell rang.
34:20I know that rang.
34:21I was in a position where I was on my way back, where I was just trying to find out.
34:25My way back, where I was just going to spin and go back.
34:27You know, but he threw, threw uppercut and boom, boom.
34:30You know, and I was just in the wrong position.
34:32We've just finished interviewing.
34:33He says he wants to have you back as soon as possible.
34:36Is December too early for you?
34:38Well, you know, I don't know.
34:40I have to see, you know, what's wrong with my knee, you know.
34:43You mean we're going to put you on injured reserve like the football team?
34:46I don't want to be like that because this is not football, you know.
34:49You think it can recover?
34:51Have you ever had any injury to that knee?
34:53Let's start there.
34:54Yeah.
34:55Yeah, you know.
34:56Yeah.
34:57This is a knee that's given you problems before.
34:59Well, you know, I've heard it once before, you know, but it's never given me problems.
35:03Have you ever got it operated on?
35:06Yes.
35:07You had an operation on the knee and this is the one that went?
35:10Yeah.
35:11Well, it didn't go because of anything.
35:16It went because the way when I went down, the way my leg was contorted.
35:19That's what happened to me.
35:20Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with my knee.
35:22My knee was fine.
35:23It's been fine for, you know, probably eight years, you know, but it was just the way that I was stepping away from the action and got caught with a shot.
35:33You think you're just part of the Tyson curse, then no matter what he does, it ends up strange?
35:37I don't know.
35:38I don't want to end like this.
35:39You know, I mean, I'm not into cursing or anything like that.
35:42You know, I just, I want to, I want, I want to have a fight where we'll be.
35:46I lost, you know, if I lost, I lost.
35:49You know, I got knocked out.
35:50I got knocked out.
35:51But not, not by getting hit, you know, at the end of the back.
35:54What's the fight going the way you thought it was going?
35:56Were you satisfied with the first round?
35:57Were you, were you?
35:58Oh yeah.
35:59I felt like I was winning the first round, you know.
36:00I felt his power, you know, you know, and, um, you know, I knew what I had to do, you know, from that point on.
36:05You know, that was just, that was just the beginning of my, my whole strategy, you know, to boxing, you know, and, uh, fill his power, you know.
36:12And, uh, you know, I had, I had got past that round.
36:15You know.
36:16All right.
36:17So the main, the main thing for you then is to rest, rehabilitate your knees, see what's necessary for it, and then make future plans to see if you come back with Tyson again or if they bypass you and keep on going.
36:26Right.
36:27That's, that's my plan to see what happens.
36:29All right.
36:30Uh, Abel's one, uh, one, uh, we, uh, going to go back to Steve and Bobby at ringside, but your last thing, are you very disappointed?
36:41Extremely disappointed.
36:42Extremely disappointed.
36:43I, we, we worked very hard in the gym.
36:45We didn't want it to end this way, but there was no way I was gonna let him continue with the swelling up like that.
36:48Absolutely.
36:49All right.
36:50To Bobby and Steve at ringside.
36:52All right, Ferdy.
36:53Thank you very much, Ferdy.
36:55We did, uh, notice, we observed that Orlin Norris was able to walk back to the corner okay under his own power.
37:02The corner instructed him to stay seated between rounds, and in particular his advisor, Michael Marley.
37:08Let's tell us straight with the help of Bobby says exactly what happened here.
37:16Maybe it'll shed some light.
37:17I don't know.
37:18Well, you're gonna see right here is the knee.
37:20So straight is not working right now.
37:23What?
37:24Okay.
37:25As he comes in.
37:26Now watch the shot.
37:27Now watch him go down.
37:28Look at this.
37:29Look at his knee.
37:30The telestrator's not working, fellas, for whatever reason.
37:33But the knee right here, you look at his right knee.
37:35It's bent, and then his body will topple to the right, twisting it further.
37:38We can run this photo.
37:39See, there you go.
37:40Now, only he knows, and only that knee could show what damage that did.
37:44I've torn a ligament in my knee in a similar fashion, but he did get up and walk back.
37:51I know when I made my fall, I didn't get up and walk anywhere.
37:54How ironic that you remember in the Olympics.
37:59We'll get back to that in a second.
38:00Watch.
38:01He's getting up slowly.
38:02Let's see what he does here, Bobby.
38:04He's walking okay under his own power.
38:07He's not even limping there.
38:08No.
38:09No sign of trouble.
38:10That knee's not torn, because if he was torn, I tore mine doing exactly what,
38:13New Orleans did just there, almost the exact same type of fall, tore it,
38:17and there's no way I could walk for quite some time.
38:19And then, you know, we heard Mike Marley screaming for a disqualification all along,
38:24and Marley and the corner instructing him to stay seated between rounds after he walked
38:28back to the corner.
38:30Okay, under his own power, showing no signs of a limp.
38:33I was going to say that the irony in the Olympics, you remember Evander Holyfield hit?
38:38I think it was a guy named Kevin Barry of New Zealand after the bell,
38:41and he lost the gold medal.
38:43And how ironic that it's the man whose ear was bitten a little over two years ago
38:47by Mike Tyson.
38:50Well, I thought after the bite, I had seen about every possible variation
38:57of a normal fight night that I could.
38:59And yet again, here is something new.
39:01The word normal and Mike Tyson usually don't go together.
39:08Mark Ratner with Elias Ghanem, James Knave in the middle there,
39:12and the blue suit, of course, Richard Steele.
39:14They're all together talking things over.
39:16Mark Ratner on the left, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission,
39:21two of the commissioners.
39:42Michael Petito with his back to the camera.
39:44You saw him.
39:45And here goes Norris being helped out by Abel Sanchez, his trainer,
39:50and some members of the security.
39:52No, I'd like to say something too.
39:53Mike Marley yelling rematch.
39:54We'll fight him again another time.
39:56DQ disqualification.
39:57It was, remember, back to another Norris, Terry Norris,
39:59when he was fighting in Mexico.
40:01Yes.
40:02And what happened there?
40:03Was that Segundo Mercado fight or the Santana fight?
40:05No.
40:06It was the Santana fight.
40:07And hit not very hard.
40:08Santana went down, and we all thought to a great degree faked it
40:11just for rematch another purse and more money.
40:14And lo and behold, in that fight after the bell, Terry clearly hit him after the bell hard.
40:18Luis Santana, right?
40:20That's correct.
40:21That was like a series of vicious after the bell situations for Terry Norris,
40:25and he was considered at one time one of the greatest fighters in the world.
40:30There were two disqualifications.
40:31The first one I thought was a lot of acting by Santana.
40:34The second one was clearly a bad judgment call.
40:36By Norris.
40:37But it's just maybe there's a curse on the Norris family.
40:42So two more blemishes for boxing this weekend.
40:45Prince Nassim Hamed and Cesar Soto's wrestling match last night.
40:49And now this contest.
40:54Just receiving word that after this meeting takes place,
40:57the one of the commissioners or Mark Ratner will come to us
41:00and give us an explanation from their viewpoint as to what happened here tonight.
41:06And we're still scratching our heads trying to sort this all out and figure things out.
41:12How about Richard Steele?
41:13Always finds himself in the middle of this stuff.
41:15Unbelievable.
41:16And, of course, Mike Tyson, too.
41:17Even the Honorable Judge Mills Lane found himself sitting in the middle of one of them.
41:24Isn't that ironic?
41:25It happens to everybody.
41:26He was the referee in the ear-biting incident.
41:28Well, here's Norris relaxing in the dressing room afterwards with the ice pack on his right knife.
41:35Right knife.
41:36We got one right here.
41:37Abel Sanchez.
41:38I had seen the scar there, too, and I think they talked about it.
41:40That it was injured at one time.
41:41That's been fine for the past eight years.
41:43Not anymore.
41:44But, I mean, there are going to be people who say this is a convenient injury here now.
41:49They're upset.
41:50They're ticked off because they feel the fight should have been a disqualification in Norris' favor.
41:54And it becomes a no contest and it results in a rematch.
41:57But, you know, to all due fairness, Richard Steele was slightly correct when he said an accidental foul
42:03because Mike was in the middle of just trying to jam and get loose and the bell just rang
42:07and it was less than a full second after the bell.
42:09The fight doctor is standing by with Mark Ratner.
42:20Purdy?
42:21Mark Ratner, another bizarre night when Tyson fights.
42:25What is the last of the discussions?
42:27We're going to get the films.
42:29We got to hear the bell ourselves.
42:30We're going to review everything.
42:32We will hold the purse until we are able to review it.
42:35You mean there's still a chance that something could happen where Tyson would lose a fight
42:40under disqualification?
42:41Well, we don't know.
42:42We don't know intent or anything right now.
42:44All we know is that the Orland could not continue because his knee was severely twisted.
42:49Well, that's not in doubt.
42:50No, that's not in doubt at all.
42:52The fight would have continued if he would have he was mentally fine.
42:55He was mentally sharp.
42:56There was nothing wrong with the head blow.
42:58So the fight would have gone on.
42:59It was an accident in that he twisted his knee in an accidental fall.
43:03I mean, he was knocked down.
43:04No question about that.
43:05So that's nothing you can help and there's nothing you can fake either.
43:07No, that's correct.
43:08There's no nothing Orland will get paid tonight.
43:11We just want to make sure with Mike when the exactly when the punch was.
43:15We don't know.
43:16Would that cause him to have a fine?
43:18Would that cause him to lose the person?
43:20That's why we're going to review it on Monday.
43:22We'll have a special commission meeting and really check it out.
43:25Okay.
43:26That does not mean that this poor guy is going to have to come up before the commission again like some Salem witch.
43:30Are we going to keep coming again again again?
43:32No, this is a bizarre intention.
43:36You know, it's a it's a one of those things that happens in the fight game.
43:40Seems to happen to him a lot.
43:41It's it's it's the story of our lives here in Nevada.
43:44And but we'll review it and we'll do what's right.
43:47All right.
43:48You didn't answer my question.
43:49Does that mean that Tyson will have to come back up again?
43:52You know, again before the commission?
43:54I don't know if he'll have to come back or we got to see the film and to make a.
43:58But what I'm saying, would his representative be just as good?
44:01Well, absolutely.
44:02We have to have somebody from from the Tyson camp and maybe it'll be Mike.
44:05But what we want to do is just take a look because we just can't make a decision without seeing everything.
44:10Yeah.
44:11Well, I think it's bad and pathetic for us in boxing and for the general sport of boxing.
44:18You know, we wanted a good fight.
44:20We deserved a good fight.
44:21You know.
44:22Now, the question that comes almost to mind, all of you are here.
44:26Why don't we just do this tonight?
44:27What are we waiting for Monday for?
44:29Well, because we have learned more than anything not to make hasty decisions to really look at it away from everybody.
44:34And that's what we'll do.
44:35Well, you can get away from everybody.
44:36I don't I don't mean to press you, but you can go back to a room and replay.
44:40It's only a television tape.
44:41It isn't going to change from now until Monday.
44:43I mean, the result is going to be the same.
44:45You guys are here.
44:46There's an empty room.
44:47You sit down and you thrash it out.
44:48I mean, why keep everybody in suspense?
44:50It's it's it's something that the commissioners want to do.
44:53And that's the way we'll do it.
44:54Well, I I regret that that's going to hang fire till Monday.
44:59We got the it seems like boxing doesn't come up with quick answers to anything.
45:04Maybe you're correcting and letting cool heads prevail.
45:06I don't think you're going to see anything different Monday than you're going to see today.
45:09And I don't think that it's necessary for you to make Mike go through more of that.
45:16I'm sure Orland's not going to go through anything.
45:19You know, you can't do it.
45:21You cannot do and give him a special treatment.
45:24I mean, just another bucket.
45:26Absolutely.
45:27We've already asked you if you're going to hold the person.
45:28You've already answered it, haven't you?
45:29Yes.
45:30Clearly, haven't you?
45:31Yes.
45:32You're going to hold Orland Norris's purse.
45:33That is correct.
45:34And you don't know yet whether you're going to hold Tyson's purse till you see it.
45:38That is all right.
45:39That's what I thought you told me a few minutes ago.
45:41OK.
45:42All right.
45:43And in in the final analysis, we've had another strange night, which you which you could not
45:48do anything about.
45:49We could not do anything about.
45:50And apparently it's just heaven sent.
45:52This guy has got a black mark on him.
45:54He just can't just get through a fight.
45:56Thank you very much for for coming and speaking to us.
45:59And we'll go back to Bobby and Steve at ringside.
46:03Thank you very much, Bertie.
46:06We're going to go back and take another look at the fight again, the fight three minutes,
46:10basically.
46:11And we'll voice it over here as we see it ourselves in the past tense.
46:17And I'll tell you what.
46:18And I believe this.
46:19I was thinking I think it has the fight first round was coming to an end, which was in essence
46:23to fight.
46:24Mike Tyson was still not doing one thing enough.
46:26And that's the jab.
46:27We talked about the keys to victory.
46:28Mike was so successful in his own coming behind that double triple even quadruple jab.
46:32And then going from there.
46:34Here is waiting on Orland looking to land the big one.
46:37Not doing enough jabbing.
46:38Early on he jabbed a little more as we get into the second half of the first round.
46:42He doesn't jab as much.
46:43He's looking for the big one.
46:44Looking for the big hook.
46:45Looking for the big right hand.
46:46Looking for the big right hand.
46:47Looking for the big shots.
46:48Norris was fighting a pretty smart fight here in the first round.
46:49I told people I said there's no such thing as an easy Norris.
46:50The whole family has a good sense of the fight game.
46:51Good strong wills.
46:52They get in shape.
46:53They do what they're supposed to.
46:54Great.
46:55Pay attention to the trade.
46:56He's a smart fighter.
46:57Good defensive fighter.
46:58I've seen him out boxman six four six five like Tony Tucker and Alvin McCall.
46:59Now box out boxing Mike's a different thing but he was doing what he needed to.
47:03And he wanted to frustrate Mike.
47:04He wanted to get Mike to miss with the big shots which he was doing.
47:06He was doing what he wanted to a degree.
47:07Up until the.
47:08Bow up until the.
47:09Bell up until the.
47:10Bell up until the.
47:11To the.
47:12To the.
47:13To the.
47:14To the.
47:15To the.
47:16To the.

47:28To the.
47:29To the.
47:30To the.
47:31To the.
47:32To the.
47:34To the.
47:36flooring.
47:37I thought Mike was winning the first round by a little bit but.
47:38It was a very close round because it was not a lot of good action.
47:41Certainly Norris is best days behind it but the same can be said for Mike Tyson with our.
47:49Question good job there by.
47:50Orland Norris that starts getting rough.
47:52here's that right now if Mike we're doing it back we're going to have something in his face to worry
47:59about and then he could unload with the right hand the left hook and or the uppercuts and it's very
48:04intelligent to hold Mike on the inside because that's where he's at is most dangerous even with
48:08a guy the same height he's always he can hit you can hurt you always been a smart fighter on the
48:13north well schooled there's a good left hand there by Tyson under a minute to go and if you're seeing
48:22this for the first time brace yourself punch your way out it's another controversy from Mike Tyson
48:28coming up in a matter of seconds Tyson missing with that right
48:36trying to end it with one punch as he did with Francois both of them back in January all the years
48:44I spent sparring all the years I spent fighting both as an amateur and as a pro there have been
48:48many instances where neither myself or my sparring partner or opponent heard the bell we just kept
48:53fighting it had nothing to do with bad intentions just our focus and our minds were clearly on one
48:58thing that was doing right damage
48:59the crowd getting on Tyson there and Richard Steele
49:11the bell clearly sounded with the left down went doors but watch now watch the watch them
49:20come on as he gets up he gets up okay under his own power no sign of a hobble or a limp he conducts
49:30initially key points probably standing on it fine now yeah and you know what the fact is he may have
49:37he may have twisted a little bit he said something corners that twisted my leg a little bit but
49:42otherwise I'm all right and that's when the brainstorm started between Abel Sanchez and Mike Marley
49:47and everybody else seizing an opportunity to double a payday
49:50we're listening to what Abel Sanchez said there could really make out what he said to Orland Norris
50:03but he wasn't involved in what I heard just now though that I will tell you well I guess it's an oxymoron
50:09but it's another black guy for boxing well you know Steve it just it's unbelievable to me the
50:14amount of different types of things that we've seen over the years many of them surrounding Mike
50:17Tyson and they just come up with more it's just unbelievable I I just can't uh fathom that this
50:23has happened again and uh we you know what was determined here what what nothing was accomplished
50:30tonight nothing was accomplished tonight not nothing really and now what happens to Mike Tyson from this
50:36point on well I know dr. Knabe doesn't particularly like him dr. James name he's got he's part of the
50:41commission and you know I'm sure they're gonna hold a you know another uh you know inquiry and this and
50:47this and that and everybody's gonna say should he fight should he not fight I can't see this type of
50:52thing happens in the gym every single day yeah it really does something shady here though something is
50:56definitely shady Mike Marley the advisor former sports writer for the New York Post I know for Don King is a
51:04public relations man went to work with the Norris's he was managing Terry Norris for a while advising now
51:09Orland Norris he was screaming at the top of his lungs with expletives this should be a disqualification
51:15Orland or should be the winner but he also it was green who advised Norris to stay in his corner and
51:20also right he also advised not just DQ but immediate rematch which leads me to believe which leads me to
51:28believe that that whether or not he was going to win the fight whether or not he was doing well and I
51:31thought he was doing well not relevant the relevant thing here is another 800,000 there's no question
51:37it could come down to dollars and cents sometimes it's smart I think when Norris Terry Ford Santana
51:43I think he was clearly about getting another shot of the buck well this was his biggest payday eight
51:46hundred thousand dollars as opposed to his previous which was two hundred fifty thousand dollars for
51:51Arthur Williams and he would like another one he'll probably ask for more money this time around over a
51:56million dollars I don't know and that's in the future well we'll see what happens well let's uh
52:02let's let's take a look at a recap right now what we saw earlier tonight at least we had a blazer in
52:08that first one it was really an explosive fight as Garcia lost his title to Diego Corrales the IBF
52:14Junior lightweight belt went to Diego Corrales from Sacramento stopped Garcia in the seventh round that
52:19was a great fight and then of course the Tyson Norris fight declared a no contest after the end
52:24of the first round when Tyson hit Norris after the the bell that ended uh the end of the first round
52:31and then down went Norris his his right knee buckled and his corner told him don't go out for the rest of
52:38the fight and it was declared a no contest after two points had been initially deducted by Richard Steele
52:44from Mike Tyson and a hearing will be pending the Mark Ratner and company will have to take a look
52:49at the tape as Bertie Pacheco was uh was pressing Mark earlier and uh they'll determine the future
52:56in two weeks Showtime Championship Boxing returns to England to feature the American debut of the
53:03popular unbeaten Southpaw Joe Calzaghe who is the latest title holder in the long line of British
53:08super middleweight royalty Calzaghe defends his WBO crown against highly ranked Omar Sheikah in a special
