His fans might not know that former NFL quarterback Terry Bradshaw is also a lifelong horse lover. This year, he's hoping to get to the Breeders' Cup with his filly Taken by the Wind, the winner of the GIII Pocahontas Stakes who he co-owns with Magdalena Racing and Graham Leveston. The enthusiastic owner joined us on this week's TDN Writers' Room.

00:00:00Welcome to another edition of the
00:00:29TDN Writers Room Podcast presented by
00:00:31Keeneland. My name is Bill Finley. I'm a
00:00:33correspondent for the Thoroughbred Daily News
00:00:35and also broadcast racing on Sirius
00:00:37XM Radio. How y'all doing?
00:00:40I'm Brandy Moss with NBC
00:00:41Sports. Looking forward to our upcoming
00:00:43chat with Mr. Terry Bradshaw.
00:00:46Also, I got papers everywhere. Zoe
00:00:47loves that. I'm preparing for a telecast
00:00:50this weekend, old school style.
00:00:52We've got on NBC
00:00:53Saturday and Sunday races from Keeneland
00:00:55and also from Santa Anita. It'll be on
00:00:57CNBC from 4
00:00:59to 6 p.m. on Saturday and
00:01:01then NBC Regular on Sunday
00:01:04also from 4 to 6. Just
00:01:05a broadcast alert there,
00:01:07Zoe. Definitely. We'll be
00:01:09looking forward to that. I'll have to press record
00:01:11at home because I'll be at Santa Anita.
00:01:14I'm Zoe Cabman with Santa Anita
00:01:15and First TV and
00:01:17really looking forward to talking
00:01:19to Mr. Bradshaw.
00:01:21Aren't we all? He's going to be a great guest, I assume,
00:01:24because he's
00:01:25interesting. He's eccentric. I think
00:01:28hopefully that we'll get that
00:01:29same sort of Terry Bradshaw out of
00:01:31him. So guys, usually we start off
00:01:33the show by going over the bigger
00:01:35races of the weekend. I want to do something
00:01:37a little bit different because I think the biggest
00:01:39story of the week was not
00:01:41anything that happened on the racetrack, but was
00:01:43the Paco Lopez situation.
00:01:46And he was given a six
00:01:47month suspension by Haiza
00:01:49for essentially violating
00:01:52his probation
00:01:53when he hit a horse by the name
00:01:55of National Law across the face
00:01:57with a whip in December.
00:01:59At least there were
00:01:5945 days
00:02:00then. And since
00:02:02then, there have been
00:02:0425 over-the-head
00:02:05violations that Haiza
00:02:07has recorded. Eight of them
00:02:09belong to Paco
00:02:10Lopez. So
00:02:11I think the breeders, excuse me, I think
00:02:13Haiza just said, enough is
00:02:15enough, Paco. You haven't learned your lesson
00:02:17and take a little vacation, my friend.
00:02:19Zoe, you're our
00:02:21expert jockey. What do you think of this?
00:02:23All right. Well, let me just preface
00:02:25with, we'll start off with this.
00:02:27When Paco Lopez hit that
00:02:29horse, National Law around the face
00:02:31in December, I wholeheartedly
00:02:33agree that we have no room
00:02:35for that in this sport of horse racing
00:02:37and he should have got six months.
00:02:39He should have served his six months.
00:02:40He wouldn't have been having the best year
00:02:42ever had he done
00:02:43six months already. So
00:02:45I'll leave that there
00:02:47and we'll move on.
00:02:48What has happened since,
00:02:51however, I feel
00:02:53is akin to moving the
00:02:55goalposts. Now, we're not quite
00:02:56sure what this
00:02:58two-year probationary period
00:03:00was. You mentioned
00:03:02the eight whip violations
00:03:04with putting his arm above his
00:03:06shoulder to hit a horse
00:03:07when there's only been 25
00:03:08nationwide between all the
00:03:11jockeys in America.
00:03:12One thing I can't quite understand is
00:03:14if all the other
00:03:14jocks in America seem to get it
00:03:16right, why is Paco Lopez at fault
00:03:19eight of the 25
00:03:21violations that have come through?
00:03:23What I'd really like to know
00:03:25is what were the stipulations
00:03:27of the probation?
00:03:28Was it eight?
00:03:29Paco, if you get eight
00:03:31violations, you're automatically
00:03:33out for two years.
00:03:35If that's the case
00:03:36and he knew he was coming up
00:03:37on eight, okay, fair game.
00:03:39You know, you had your probation.
00:03:41The magic number is eight.
00:03:43But was there a magic number?
00:03:44I'm not sure there was.
00:03:45And this to me
00:03:46is exactly what happened
00:03:48with Bob Baffert's
00:03:49feud with CDI
00:03:50when he served his two years
00:03:52and then they just
00:03:54tacked on another one
00:03:55just for the hell of it.
00:03:56We can't keep moving
00:03:57the goalposts.
00:03:58So for that,
00:03:59I stand with Paco
00:04:00for the incident
00:04:01in December.
00:04:03He should have got
00:04:04six months
00:04:04and I,
00:04:06as a horse owner,
00:04:07can quite easily say
00:04:09I wouldn't put him
00:04:09on a horse
00:04:10purely because of that.
00:04:12but this,
00:04:13what has happened since
00:04:14is not fair.
00:04:16Yeah, I'm kind of
00:04:19torn on this.
00:04:20I suppose if I was
00:04:21judge, jury,
00:04:22and executioner
00:04:23in this case,
00:04:24I probably
00:04:26would give him
00:04:28two or three months
00:04:29instead of the six months.
00:04:32I mean,
00:04:32I think a message
00:04:34has to be delivered
00:04:35that hasn't gotten
00:04:36through apparently.
00:04:38but I agree with you.
00:04:40I don't think
00:04:41there was communication
00:04:42necessarily with Paco
00:04:44saying you get
00:04:45X number of violations
00:04:47and then we're really
00:04:48going to lower
00:04:49the hammer on you.
00:04:51He's also a
00:04:52very unsympathetic figure.
00:04:55Everybody in horse racing
00:04:56knows he's been
00:04:57kind of a loose cannon
00:04:58on the racetrack.
00:04:592019,
00:05:00Gulfstream suspended him
00:05:01for 30 days
00:05:02for his part
00:05:03in a spill.
00:05:04Came right back then
00:05:05and suspended him
00:05:05for 60 more days
00:05:07when there was another spill.
00:05:08They ultimately trim that
00:05:09with community service
00:05:10and things like that.
00:05:11Then there's the incident
00:05:12where he hits the horse
00:05:13in the face
00:05:14and all that.
00:05:15Since then,
00:05:16right,
00:05:16since he came back
00:05:18from that
00:05:1946-day suspension,
00:05:21right,
00:05:22February the 10th,
00:05:23two violations
00:05:24for raising the whip,
00:05:25both for $500 fines.
00:05:27One-day suspensions
00:05:28on Feb 25,
00:05:30April 23rd,
00:05:31April 29th,
00:05:32May 6th,
00:05:34July the 20th,
00:05:35two days on August the 20th,
00:05:37three days on August the 23rd,
00:05:38one day on September 11th.
00:05:40Are you kidding me?
00:05:42Seriously?
00:05:43I mean,
00:05:44this guy clearly
00:05:45either isn't getting
00:05:46the message
00:05:47or doesn't give a care
00:05:49and it's worth it to him
00:05:51to take a one-day suspension
00:05:53if it comes to winning
00:05:54a particular race.
00:05:56So yeah,
00:05:56I do think
00:05:58that a message
00:05:59needs to be delivered
00:06:01and a strong message
00:06:02needs to be delivered,
00:06:03but do I think
00:06:04six months
00:06:05this is a little
00:06:05over the top?
00:06:07Yeah,
00:06:07I do
00:06:08and I expect that,
00:06:09honestly,
00:06:10maybe I'm wrong.
00:06:11I kind of expect
00:06:12that to be adjudicated
00:06:13downward,
00:06:14compromised downward
00:06:15just a little bit,
00:06:16but we'll see.
00:06:18Randy,
00:06:19one other thing
00:06:19I'd like to point out
00:06:20about this
00:06:20and it's kind of
00:06:21piggybacking off
00:06:22what you said,
00:06:22he doesn't learn
00:06:24his lesson
00:06:24and he acts
00:06:27on the racetrack
00:06:27like the rules
00:06:28don't apply to him.
00:06:30What is there?
00:06:31Two,
00:06:313,000 jockeys
00:06:32in the country
00:06:32and these guys,
00:06:35it's only Paco,
00:06:36it's always Paco
00:06:37and you named
00:06:38all these different
00:06:39suspensions,
00:06:4030 days here,
00:06:4060 days,
00:06:41he didn't learn
00:06:42his lesson
00:06:42from any of them.
00:06:44When he gets back
00:06:45on the horse,
00:06:46he's just back
00:06:47to being Paco.
00:06:48Now,
00:06:49you know,
00:06:50he's got it
00:06:50and that's why
00:06:52I don't think
00:06:52he's going to change.
00:06:53I am all in favor
00:06:54of the six months
00:06:55suspension.
00:06:56I think they should
00:06:56have given him
00:06:57more than six months
00:06:58for hitting that horse
00:06:59in the face
00:06:59with the whip
00:07:00but he's,
00:07:01somebody's got to
00:07:02sit this guy down
00:07:03and say,
00:07:03you got to stop
00:07:04this stuff.
00:07:05It's bad for your career
00:07:06and it's certainly
00:07:07bad for horse racing.
00:07:09I'd just like to know
00:07:10the number.
00:07:11I mean,
00:07:11in order to see
00:07:13this correctly,
00:07:14we need to know,
00:07:14was it eight whip
00:07:16violations?
00:07:16You're out.
00:07:18Was it five?
00:07:19Or did they just
00:07:19suddenly wake up
00:07:20and go,
00:07:21oh,
00:07:21another one?
00:07:21All right,
00:07:22yeah,
00:07:22screw it.
00:07:23I've had enough
00:07:23of him.
00:07:24Write him off
00:07:24for six months.
00:07:25That's what I think
00:07:26is the thing
00:07:27that we need
00:07:28to know.
00:07:29What's interesting
00:07:30is that in the
00:07:31HISA whip rules,
00:07:32I went back
00:07:33and looked at
00:07:33the regulations
00:07:34the way they're
00:07:34written and they
00:07:36are very specifically
00:07:37written with
00:07:39point totals
00:07:40for violations
00:07:41and escalating
00:07:43suspensions
00:07:44that go all the
00:07:44way up to 30
00:07:45days.
00:07:46But those are
00:07:47only for whip
00:07:48violations pertaining
00:07:49to the number
00:07:50of times a horse
00:07:51is hit during
00:07:53the running
00:07:53of a race.
00:07:53There's no
00:07:54sort of guidelines
00:07:55like that about
00:07:57the violations
00:07:58when a jockey
00:07:59raises his wrist
00:08:00over his helmet.
00:08:01So that's all
00:08:01kind of fly by the
00:08:02seat of your pants
00:08:03sort of thing,
00:08:04at least as far
00:08:04as the regulations,
00:08:05the way they're
00:08:06written right now
00:08:06are concerned.
00:08:07And I think,
00:08:08as Bill pointed out,
00:08:09HISA just said,
00:08:10enough is enough.
00:08:12It's a bad look
00:08:13for horse racing
00:08:14and we're going
00:08:15to do something
00:08:15about it.
00:08:16One thing quickly
00:08:17that I think
00:08:18is a plus for the
00:08:19sport because we
00:08:20never seem to
00:08:21manage this,
00:08:22all the jocks
00:08:23have stuck together
00:08:23on this.
00:08:24And every single
00:08:25jock that's for
00:08:26Paco has probably
00:08:27likely been fouled
00:08:28by Paco at one
00:08:29point or time.
00:08:31And I think in
00:08:31this day and age,
00:08:32it's actually good
00:08:33to see some unity
00:08:34in some part
00:08:35of horse racing.
00:08:37So kudos to the
00:08:38jocks for sticking
00:08:38together.
00:08:39And they're saying
00:08:40the right things
00:08:41like Johnny Velasquez
00:08:43is not,
00:08:44you know,
00:08:45he's not against
00:08:46the whip rules.
00:08:47He said,
00:08:47rules are rules,
00:08:48rules need to be
00:08:49followed.
00:08:50And he needs to
00:08:51get a message,
00:08:51but we just think
00:08:52that six months
00:08:53is too much.
00:08:54Gotcha.
00:08:55Well, guys,
00:08:55let's now return
00:08:56to the racetrack
00:08:57and the big race
00:08:59over the weekend
00:08:59and one of the big
00:09:00races over the weekend
00:09:01was the Joe Hurst
00:09:02Turf Classic
00:09:03out at Aqueduct.
00:09:05Isn't this
00:09:06Rebel's Romance
00:09:06a neat horse?
00:09:07He's seven years old.
00:09:08He wins the
00:09:10Joe Hurst Turf Classic.
00:09:11He's already won
00:09:12two Breeders' Cups
00:09:13in 24.
00:09:14He won the Breeders' Cup
00:09:15Turf and in 22
00:09:16he won the Breeders' Cup
00:09:17Turf as well.
00:09:19The stable made
00:09:19El Cordobas
00:09:20a little bit
00:09:21disappointing
00:09:21finishing third.
00:09:23But Randy,
00:09:24you said he'd be
00:09:25the favorite
00:09:25in the Breeders' Cup
00:09:26Turf.
00:09:26I'm sure he will be.
00:09:27He's a fun horse.
00:09:28He's easy to root for.
00:09:30This might have been
00:09:31the first time
00:09:32in his career
00:09:32he was ever put
00:09:33on the early lead.
00:09:34I'm not sure about that.
00:09:35He's run an awful
00:09:36lot of times
00:09:36in his life.
00:09:37I'd love the ride
00:09:39by Frankie de Tori.
00:09:40I still don't know
00:09:41why William Buick
00:09:43didn't make the trip
00:09:43over to ride him.
00:09:44Maybe that was
00:09:45published somewhere
00:09:45and I missed it.
00:09:46There were some
00:09:47very big races
00:09:48at Newmarket.
00:09:49Yeah, he won a group one.
00:09:50He won the Middle Park.
00:09:52Yeah.
00:09:53All right.
00:09:55Hey, anyone can ride
00:09:56Rebel's Romance, right?
00:09:58Bill can even ride
00:10:00Rebel's Romance.
00:10:00He's not hard to ride.
00:10:02You put him on the lead
00:10:03and you sit there.
00:10:05Is it going too slow?
00:10:06You just let him out a notch.
00:10:08Bill could easily
00:10:08have done that.
00:10:10If I rode him,
00:10:12has any jockey in history
00:10:13ever been 75 pounds
00:10:14overweight?
00:10:16To Frankie de Tori's credit,
00:10:18you know,
00:10:19he looked at the past performances,
00:10:20didn't see a lot
00:10:21of early speed,
00:10:22said he reached out
00:10:23to the Charlie Appleby people
00:10:25and said,
00:10:25hey, look,
00:10:26there's not much speed in here.
00:10:27You know,
00:10:28would you be okay
00:10:30if I put him on the lead
00:10:31if the situation develops
00:10:32that way and nobody goes?
00:10:34And they're like,
00:10:35hey,
00:10:35use your own best judgment.
00:10:37William Buick told him
00:10:38that,
00:10:39you know,
00:10:39the horse would be just fine
00:10:40on the lead
00:10:41if that's the way
00:10:42the race developed.
00:10:43And,
00:10:44obviously,
00:10:45he was.
00:10:46I mean,
00:10:46what a neat horse he is
00:10:48and he gets a chance
00:10:49now to win,
00:10:50what,
00:10:51if all goes well,
00:10:52if he stays sound,
00:10:53become the first horse
00:10:54ever to win
00:10:54three Breeders' Cup turfs.
00:10:56Wow.
00:10:57He's amazing.
00:10:58Yeah,
00:10:58he's something else.
00:10:59Speaking of something else,
00:11:00how about Bob Baffert,
00:11:02the weekend he had
00:11:03and the biggest win
00:11:04came in the Goodwood.
00:11:06And,
00:11:06you know,
00:11:06you're not used to seeing
00:11:07this Baffert winning
00:11:08with,
00:11:08you know,
00:11:0910 to 1,
00:11:098 to 1,
00:11:109 to 1 shots.
00:11:11I don't recall exactly
00:11:12what Nevada Beach was,
00:11:14but he was not the favorite.
00:11:15So,
00:11:16this was Baffert's weekend
00:11:17and we can talk more
00:11:18about the individual races.
00:11:19In the Zenyatta Stakes,
00:11:21he runs 1-2
00:11:21with Cavallari and Ricci.
00:11:23Cavallari is undefeated
00:11:25in five starts,
00:11:26obviously now heads
00:11:27to the Breeders' Cup
00:11:29Distaff.
00:11:31Nevada Beach,
00:11:31who was just a 3-year-old,
00:11:33I didn't give him
00:11:33any chance in the Goodwood,
00:11:35thought he was
00:11:35high enough
00:11:36more than he could chew.
00:11:38He wins that race
00:11:39for Bob Baffert,
00:11:39will be going now
00:11:40in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
00:11:41And to top it off,
00:11:43Imagination
00:11:43wins the Santa Anita Sprint.
00:11:46So,
00:11:47he has another one
00:11:48going for
00:11:48the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
00:11:51But,
00:11:51you know,
00:11:52it's typical of Baffert
00:11:54to have a big weekend
00:11:55like this,
00:11:56but I think
00:11:57he's going to be
00:11:58very strong
00:11:59in the Breeders' Cup.
00:12:00Huge weekend
00:12:01for Baffert.
00:12:02Four win-in-your-ins.
00:12:04Tim Yachtin,
00:12:04of course,
00:12:05got the other one
00:12:05with Johannes,
00:12:07but Bob winning
00:12:08the other three
00:12:09and with perhaps
00:12:10the horses
00:12:10we weren't expecting him to.
00:12:12Nevada Beach
00:12:13with Mike Smith,
00:12:14terrific ride by Mike,
00:12:15just putting this horse
00:12:16just off the pace.
00:12:18Cavallari coming off
00:12:19a six-month layoff
00:12:21and basically
00:12:21jumping up in the air
00:12:23at the start,
00:12:24losing all chance,
00:12:25getting a terrific ride
00:12:27under Juan Hernandez.
00:12:29I mean,
00:12:29you've got to think
00:12:29that she's probably
00:12:30going to wind up
00:12:31to be the favorite,
00:12:33wouldn't you say,
00:12:33in the distaff?
00:12:35Her torpedo Anna.
00:12:37Yeah,
00:12:37it depends what
00:12:37torpedo Anna does
00:12:38in the spinster.
00:12:39It really does.
00:12:40So,
00:12:40she was terrific.
00:12:41And then Imagination.
00:12:42I interviewed Bob.
00:12:43I said,
00:12:44I don't have
00:12:45an imagination
00:12:45that big
00:12:46to imagine
00:12:47this horse
00:12:47even winning.
00:12:48How the hell
00:12:49did that happen?
00:12:51Poor Mark Glant
00:12:51was shaking his head
00:12:52afterwards
00:12:53with Dr. Venkman
00:12:54and he was like,
00:12:55how did that happen?
00:12:57He goes,
00:12:57I just,
00:12:58I don't understand.
00:12:59How did that happen?
00:13:00My horse ran his race
00:13:01and he seconded
00:13:02to the horse
00:13:02I wasn't worried about.
00:13:04I mean,
00:13:04you're always worried
00:13:05about Bob,
00:13:05but that horse
00:13:06got bet down.
00:13:07He went off
00:13:07at five to one.
00:13:09So,
00:13:10I mean,
00:13:11did you think
00:13:11he had a shot,
00:13:12Randy?
00:13:13Not really.
00:13:13No.
00:13:14No,
00:13:14I didn't think
00:13:15he had a shot.
00:13:15And,
00:13:15you know,
00:13:16Bob's also got,
00:13:17you know,
00:13:17waiting in the wings.
00:13:18Of course,
00:13:19he's got Hope Road
00:13:20who will be one
00:13:21of the leading contenders
00:13:22along with Copion
00:13:23and Sweet Azteca
00:13:24and the Philly Mare Sprint.
00:13:25And then that doesn't
00:13:26even count as two-year-olds
00:13:27that we'll be talking
00:13:28about coming up
00:13:29in the American Pharaoh
00:13:29and the Oakley
00:13:30this weekend.
00:13:31So,
00:13:31the wide-haired guy
00:13:33is loaded
00:13:34for the Breeders' Cup
00:13:35this year.
00:13:36Good to be Bob.
00:13:37So,
00:13:37I want to mention
00:13:38also the Lucas Classic.
00:13:39It's a grade two race,
00:13:41but it was nice
00:13:41to see Mystic Dan
00:13:42get back into
00:13:43the winner's circle.
00:13:44Francisco Arrieta,
00:13:45the substitute rider,
00:13:46I thought he rode
00:13:47a really good race.
00:13:48He had their horse
00:13:49really in tight
00:13:50in the stretch
00:13:51and he kind of just,
00:13:52you know,
00:13:52motored his way
00:13:53through those tight quarters.
00:13:56Is he good enough
00:13:57to win the Breeders' Cup Classic?
00:14:00Probably not,
00:14:01but he's good enough
00:14:02to win a grade two
00:14:04and an important race.
00:14:06That's kind of his level.
00:14:07Kenny McPeak
00:14:07has managed him very well,
00:14:09but I've always liked
00:14:10this horse
00:14:11and feel bad
00:14:12for Brian Hernandez.
00:14:13He's already lost him
00:14:14and now he's going to lose
00:14:15Torpedo Anna
00:14:16and the Spinster
00:14:17on Sunday
00:14:17with the substitute riders
00:14:19going to be Flavio and Pratt.
00:14:20But,
00:14:21congratulations
00:14:22to the whole team
00:14:23behind Mystic Dan.
00:14:26He didn't have
00:14:27the best trip
00:14:27and won anyway.
00:14:29Disarmed finishes well
00:14:31when he's running
00:14:32one of his better races,
00:14:33which he did
00:14:34in the Lucas Classic
00:14:36and Mystic Dan
00:14:38just outfinished him
00:14:39and caught him
00:14:39from behind.
00:14:40For a Kentucky Derby winner,
00:14:42this is a horse
00:14:42that's been sort of
00:14:43lost in the shuffle
00:14:44in the classic conversation.
00:14:46Everybody wants
00:14:47to talk about it,
00:14:48and rightfully so,
00:14:49about sovereignty
00:14:49and journalism
00:14:50and fierceness
00:14:51in Sierra Leone
00:14:52and Mindframe,
00:14:53Forever Young,
00:14:55who runs Wednesday
00:14:56in Japan
00:14:57in his prep race
00:14:58for the Breeders' Cup Classic.
00:14:59So Mystic Dan
00:15:00just hasn't been
00:15:02very much
00:15:04in the classic
00:15:04conversation so far
00:15:06and maybe he will
00:15:08be a little bit now,
00:15:09but I agree with you,
00:15:10Bill.
00:15:10I think he's
00:15:11going to be
00:15:12at least 10 to 1,
00:15:14I would think,
00:15:15in the Breeders' Cup Classic
00:15:16and maybe he was
00:15:17higher than that.
00:15:1710 to 1,
00:15:18yeah.
00:15:19Yeah.
00:15:20I think he might
00:15:21go to the Dirt Mile.
00:15:22I mean,
00:15:23it'd be a different
00:15:24kettle of fish
00:15:25if we were running
00:15:26the race at Churchill Downs,
00:15:27but we're not,
00:15:28but what a gutsy
00:15:29little horse he is.
00:15:30Thank God he's so narrow.
00:15:32I literally watched
00:15:33the race with my hands
00:15:34over my eyes
00:15:35because I'm like,
00:15:36he's getting engulfed
00:15:37and how is he
00:15:38getting through that?
00:15:38And it was just like
00:15:39there was a concertina
00:15:40on Mystic Dan
00:15:42that kept closing the door
00:15:43and his little body
00:15:45kept opening it.
00:15:46It was amazing to watch
00:15:48and if you haven't seen it,
00:15:49you need to go back
00:15:50and watch it.
00:15:51Watch the head on too.
00:15:52My God.
00:15:53So coming up now
00:15:54is part one
00:15:55of two-part interview
00:15:57with Terry Bradshaw.
00:15:59That's coming up
00:15:59and then we'll be back
00:16:00to talking about the races.
00:16:02But listen in,
00:16:03this is a real fun interview
00:16:04from a real fun guy.

00:16:42we've been waiting for you.
00:16:45We've been working,
00:16:46prepping,
00:16:47training,
00:16:49putting together
00:16:50thrilling races,
00:16:51high stakes,
00:16:53favorite traditions
00:16:54and fresh experiences
00:16:55from right on the rail
00:16:57to the top of the hill.

00:17:03we can't wait
00:17:04to welcome you back
00:17:05this fall.
00:17:07Love,
00:17:08Keeneland.
00:17:08The fastest horse
00:17:11of the week
00:17:12brought to you
00:17:12by the Fast Sires
00:17:14at Windstar Farm
00:17:15and the spotlight
00:17:15this week
00:17:16is on Constitution.
00:17:18I did a Google search
00:17:19in AI mode
00:17:20which told me
00:17:21that Constitution
00:17:22has had 40
00:17:23graded stakes
00:17:24winners worldwide.
00:17:25I don't know how much
00:17:25you can trust AI
00:17:26when it comes to horse racing,
00:17:28but it's a pretty
00:17:29healthy number
00:17:30and that number
00:17:31is growing.
00:17:32Constitution picked up
00:17:33his latest graded winner
00:17:34in the Vosburg
00:17:35over the weekend.
00:17:36Grade 3,
00:17:37Patriot Spirit
00:17:38took that win
00:17:39in your end race
00:17:40for the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
00:17:42Congratulations,
00:17:43by the way,
00:17:43to Patriot Spirit's
00:17:44breeder,
00:17:45Blue Heaven Farm
00:17:46and owner,
00:17:47George Mellon.
00:17:49Fastest horse of the week
00:17:49we've talked about
00:17:50in Rebels Romance.
00:17:52106 buyer speed figure
00:17:54taking it from gate to wire
00:17:56in the Joe Hirsch
00:17:56and Rebels Romance,
00:17:57as we said,
00:17:58will almost certainly
00:17:59be a very solid favorite
00:18:01in the Breeders' Cup Tour.
00:18:02Well, we have a special
00:18:09Gainesway guest of the week.
00:18:11You know him from his play
00:18:12on the football field,
00:18:13being in the NFL Hall of Fame
00:18:15and also his work
00:18:15on Fox NFL broadcast.
00:18:18But you might get to start
00:18:19to know him as a possible owner
00:18:20of a Breeders' Cup horse.
00:18:22This is none other than
00:18:23Terry Bradshaw,
00:18:24who was obviously
00:18:25very excited about the win
00:18:27by Taken by Wind
00:18:28in the Pocahontas Stakes.
00:18:30Terry, I want to back up
00:18:31a little bit, though.
00:18:31You were very involved
00:18:33in the quarter horse business
00:18:34for a very long time.
00:18:37You've owned a couple of...
00:18:38I still am.
00:18:39Okay, you still am.
00:18:40You own part of Mission Impassible.
00:18:42You own part of Gradar.
00:18:44Now you have Taken by the Wind.
00:18:45Where did this affinity
00:18:46for horses come from?
00:18:49I grew up...
00:18:50I spent most of my time
00:18:52on my grandfather's farm
00:18:53and he had Clydesdales
00:18:54and I used to sit on top of him
00:18:56while he plowed.
00:18:57And the smell of the horse sweat
00:18:59was something.
00:18:59It was like perfume to me.
00:19:01I thought it was the coolest thing.
00:19:02And I was always down there
00:19:04loving on them
00:19:04and crawling on them.
00:19:06And my uncles
00:19:07were all cutting horse riders.
00:19:09They all rode cutting horses.
00:19:12So that's, you know,
00:19:13it's kind of like a kid.
00:19:14Introduce them
00:19:14to a bunch of stuff
00:19:15and they'll pick what they like
00:19:16and I picked horses.
00:19:17It's just a natural thing for me.
00:19:19So with cutting horses,
00:19:21you were obviously raised
00:19:22around the quarter horse breed.
00:19:25Right.
00:19:25What some people don't realize
00:19:27is that you've actually had
00:19:28a Kentucky Derby starter.
00:19:30Yes.
00:19:30Mission Impossible.
00:19:32You also own Gradar
00:19:34through your association
00:19:35with your Louisiana Tech buddy,
00:19:37Steve Davison
00:19:38and Twin Creeks Racing.
00:19:39But then you got out
00:19:41to focus primarily
00:19:42on raising quarter horses
00:19:44of all kinds,
00:19:45not just racing quarter horses.
00:19:46And now you're back.
00:19:47What, why the return now
00:19:49to Thoroughbreds?
00:19:53Randy, I got a call.
00:19:55I watch all the,
00:19:57I watch 602 all the time.
00:20:02Thoroughbreds channel
00:20:03and it's all, it's racing.
00:20:07And I never really got out of it mentally.
00:20:10I got of it physically
00:20:11and then I always wanted
00:20:13to get back in,
00:20:14but I didn't really,
00:20:16I could easily have done that.
00:20:19And I'd actually called Steve Davison
00:20:20and said, Steve,
00:20:22I've done this horse,
00:20:24the quarter horse thing.
00:20:25I've got my stallion business going.
00:20:27I said, you know what?
00:20:28I'm a little bored.
00:20:29I need to get that,
00:20:31some action back.
00:20:32And I said,
00:20:33what do you got
00:20:34that I can buy into?
00:20:35And to his,
00:20:37to his credit,
00:20:38he said,
00:20:39you know,
00:20:39I really don't have anything
00:20:41that I would want you
00:20:42and I to be in.
00:20:44And I said,
00:20:45well,
00:20:45yeah,
00:20:45I appreciated that.
00:20:47And then,
00:20:48Kirk Menefee
00:20:49and I got together
00:20:50and Kirk was telling me
00:20:53what a great,
00:20:54because Fox does
00:20:54the Belmont.
00:20:55And Kirk said,
00:20:57you got to meet this Kenny McPete.
00:21:00He's,
00:21:00he,
00:21:01you and him would hit it off.
00:21:02You guys are just alike.
00:21:04I said,
00:21:04really?
00:21:05Yes.
00:21:06Yeah.
00:21:06And then he won with Mystic Dan.
00:21:08He won the Kentucky Derby
00:21:10and Thor,
00:21:12Thorpedo Annie.
00:21:13And I went,
00:21:15oh,
00:21:16really?
00:21:17And so
00:21:17I called Kenny
00:21:20and said,
00:21:21you know,
00:21:23Kirk and I want to buy
00:21:24a horse together.
00:21:25And so we bought
00:21:26one.
00:21:30Kenny sent us a list of eight
00:21:32and we picked out
00:21:33one stud
00:21:34Power Aura.
00:21:37And then I picked out
00:21:38two more fillies
00:21:39because I'm really into fillies.
00:21:40I don't really want the studs
00:21:42because the studs
00:21:42aren't really great.
00:21:44You can't stand them at studs.
00:21:46They got to win
00:21:47one of the big three
00:21:48or they've got to
00:21:49be like handy ride,
00:21:50you know,
00:21:51sweep everything.
00:21:52But he did win
00:21:53the Belmont.
00:21:54So it was
00:21:55or
00:21:57I decided,
00:21:59you know,
00:21:59I want the fillies
00:22:00and I had no reason
00:22:01for picking,
00:22:02you know,
00:22:02taken by the wind.
00:22:03She was just there
00:22:04and I liked the name.
00:22:05That's the only reason.
00:22:06Never saw the horse.
00:22:07Still haven't seen her.
00:22:08Don't even know
00:22:09what she looks like.
00:22:10So that's how I did it.
00:22:12And so I said to Kurt,
00:22:13I said,
00:22:13Kurt,
00:22:14isn't that the best way
00:22:15Randy to do it?
00:22:16So I said,
00:22:16Kurt,
00:22:17you want to end on
00:22:17I got,
00:22:18I bought this,
00:22:18I bought two fillies.
00:22:19He said,
00:22:20no,
00:22:20no,
00:22:20no,
00:22:20no,
00:22:21no,
00:22:21no.
00:22:21I just want to do one.
00:22:23So I bought those two fillies
00:22:25and then I'm in on
00:22:25eight more yearlings
00:22:27this year.
00:22:30So it's exciting.
00:22:32I understand the game.
00:22:34I know
00:22:34win or lose
00:22:36horses,
00:22:37you know,
00:22:37they either run
00:22:38or they don't
00:22:38or they get hurt
00:22:39and so on and so forth.
00:22:40And it was just
00:22:42the excitement
00:22:42of being back
00:22:43in the thoroughbred business
00:22:45and then taken
00:22:46by the wind.
00:22:47Come on.
00:22:48Did I expect her to win?
00:22:51I can't say no.
00:22:52I'll tell you exactly.
00:22:53No,
00:22:54no.
00:22:56And just kind of like
00:22:57with Terry Bradshaw
00:22:58was not going to win
00:22:59anything like that,
00:22:59although I was successful
00:23:00with Mission
00:23:01and Gradar.
00:23:03But then it got fun
00:23:05and then she won
00:23:06the stakes rakes,
00:23:07the Pocahontas.
00:23:08And the way she ran
00:23:10on that race
00:23:10and I was watching
00:23:11and told my wife,
00:23:12look how easy
00:23:12she's running.
00:23:13I mean,
00:23:13she's not even tired.
00:23:15And then coming out
00:23:16of turn four
00:23:17and she split them
00:23:18and just turned it on,
00:23:20you know,
00:23:20and she has that
00:23:21distance in her pedigree
00:23:23and I went,
00:23:25wow.
00:23:25And that got me excited.
00:23:26I don't mind telling you.
00:23:27And I couldn't wait
00:23:29to tell Kurt,
00:23:30hey, Kurt,
00:23:30you know,
00:23:30made a little money yesterday.
00:23:35So,
00:23:36I mean,
00:23:36that's a long story,
00:23:37but it was just,
00:23:39let's do it
00:23:40just for fun.
00:23:41That's all it was.
00:23:42Terry,
00:23:42before we get back
00:23:43to horses,
00:23:43we want to know
00:23:44what are those
00:23:45bird-like noises
00:23:46in the background?
00:23:48You're so smart.
00:23:50Birds.
00:23:52They're birds.
00:23:52They're birds.
00:23:54They're macaws
00:23:56and they are loud.
00:23:59I mean,
00:23:59they,
00:24:00right now,
00:24:00we're catching a break
00:24:02but this is where
00:24:02I do podcasts
00:24:03and,
00:24:04you know,
00:24:05they're over
00:24:07grooming themselves
00:24:07right now
00:24:08but they are some
00:24:09loud suckers.
00:24:09You're right.
00:24:11But they're birds.
00:24:12Were they squawking
00:24:14when you watched the race?
00:24:15I take it,
00:24:15did you watch the race
00:24:16from home,
00:24:17Terry?
00:24:18The Pocahontas?
00:24:22No,
00:24:23I was on the road.
00:24:25I think
00:24:27we were in
00:24:29New York
00:24:30and I called
00:24:34Kenny
00:24:34and Kenny said,
00:24:36I said,
00:24:36Kenny,
00:24:36when does the mare race?
00:24:38And he said,
00:24:39six minutes.
00:24:40So we had
00:24:41six minutes.
00:24:42So we put it on
00:24:44and,
00:24:45you know,
00:24:46hey,
00:24:46Randy,
00:24:47you guys have been
00:24:47in this business
00:24:48for so long.
00:24:50It,
00:24:51I wasn't
00:24:52expecting anything
00:24:55and then
00:24:56she was right in the pack.
00:24:57It was all clustered up
00:24:59and she was just sitting there
00:25:00about fifth
00:25:00and running easy.
00:25:02I thought,
00:25:02look,
00:25:03how easy she looked
00:25:05coming out of turn three.
00:25:07She's still right
00:25:08where she was,
00:25:09not straining,
00:25:10not doing anything.
00:25:11And then she came out
00:25:12of turn four.
00:25:13She made her move
00:25:14and I went,
00:25:14you've got to be kidding me.
00:25:16I said,
00:25:17Tammy,
00:25:17we're going to win this thing.
00:25:19And then it got exciting
00:25:20down the stretch
00:25:21and she just bolted
00:25:23and just kept going.
00:25:24And I was like,
00:25:25wow,
00:25:26that is so cool.
00:25:27So you only had
00:25:28a six minute warning
00:25:30before the race started.
00:25:31Did you even have time
00:25:32to get a bet down?
00:25:34No,
00:25:35I don't.
00:25:35Hey,
00:25:35Randy,
00:25:35I don't bet.
00:25:37I don't bet.
00:25:38I don't gamble.
00:25:38Well,
00:25:39that's not true.
00:25:40Steve and I do,
00:25:41when I'm with Steve,
00:25:42I put $500 in
00:25:44and it's like,
00:25:47okay,
00:25:48when I lose it,
00:25:50you know,
00:25:50I'm through.
00:25:51And it's like,
00:25:52well,
00:25:52why you always got to lose?
00:25:54Well,
00:25:54it's thoroughbred racing
00:25:55and I don't know
00:25:55how to handicap these things.
00:25:57And Steve's pretty good at it.
00:25:58He owns the Ragason.
00:26:00You know,
00:26:00he owns that paper
00:26:01and he's pretty good.
00:26:04And we won like,
00:26:06in the first two races
00:26:07at Churchill,
00:26:08he and I,
00:26:08he picked them.
00:26:10We won the first two.
00:26:11We pocketed about $3,000 a piece.
00:26:14And I went,
00:26:15wow,
00:26:15I am,
00:26:16I'm through for the day.
00:26:18And then we,
00:26:19he said,
00:26:20let's do a trifecta.
00:26:22And I said,
00:26:23I don't know how you do a trifecta.
00:26:25We won $50,000 on the trifecta.
00:26:28$50,000.
00:26:31Now here's the kicker.
00:26:32Here's the kicker.
00:26:34I am so beside myself.
00:26:36I've made so much money
00:26:38on three,
00:26:39on four or five races.
00:26:42And every time we won,
00:26:43we'd go to the window
00:26:44and get the cash,
00:26:45right?
00:26:46On $1,800.
00:26:47We went and got the cash.
00:26:50Two thousand.
00:26:51We went and got the cash.
00:26:52The $50,000,
00:26:54I had a mare out of Indian Charlie.
00:26:57And she was,
00:26:59she was saddling in the paddock.
00:27:01And Steve said,
00:27:02let's go,
00:27:03let's go watch him
00:27:04saddle our mare for the race.
00:27:06We got a big race coming up.
00:27:08And I said,
00:27:08no,
00:27:08no,
00:27:08no,
00:27:09no,
00:27:09no,
00:27:09no,
00:27:09no.
00:27:09Let's go get the $50,000.
00:27:11He says,
00:27:12well,
00:27:12we'll get it on the way back.
00:27:13I said,
00:27:13no,
00:27:14no,
00:27:14no,
00:27:14no,
00:27:14no.
00:27:14Let's go get the money right now.
00:27:16If we get $1,800,
00:27:18surely you'll go get 50,000,
00:27:20right?
00:27:21So he said,
00:27:22no.
00:27:22So I thought,
00:27:22okay,
00:27:22so we go down and watch her.
00:27:24We watch her get saddled up
00:27:26and then she gets last in the race.
00:27:28And I didn't care
00:27:28because I'm working with 50 grand.
00:27:30We go back to the windows.
00:27:32Steve's doing this.
00:27:33Oh no.
00:27:37Oh no.
00:27:37Lost it.
00:27:38Lost the ticket.
00:27:40Lost the $50,000 ticket.
00:27:43Lost it.
00:27:44And I'm sitting there and I'm going,
00:27:46what,
00:27:46what,
00:27:46what happened?
00:27:47What's up?
00:27:48He goes,
00:27:49I don't have,
00:27:50I can't find the ticket.
00:27:51I said,
00:27:51what do you mean you can't find it?
00:27:52Where'd you put it?
00:27:53He said,
00:27:53I think I put it in my pocket,
00:27:55my shirt pocket.
00:27:56I went,
00:27:57you gotta be kidding.
00:27:58It was gone.
00:28:00He looked everywhere.
00:28:02Now,
00:28:02as you well know,
00:28:03there's tickets all over the floor.
00:28:05Sure.
00:28:07Impossible,
00:28:07impossible to find.
00:28:09And so,
00:28:10I was sick.
00:28:13And,
00:28:13Steve,
00:28:15to his credit,
00:28:16traced it,
00:28:18went back to the machine,
00:28:20gave the number,
00:28:21the credit card number,
00:28:22something.
00:28:23He had a suite at church where it was down.
00:28:25And they,
00:28:26they redid eight,
00:28:27well anyway,
00:28:28eight months later,
00:28:29we got our money.
00:28:30Oh,
00:28:31okay.
00:28:32You know,
00:28:33they traced it back to the betting,
00:28:35and that's something.
00:28:36Now,
00:28:37did you,
00:28:37that was,
00:28:38that's quite,
00:28:38that's quite a story right there.
00:28:40But I,
00:28:41did you reinvest it with Kenny?
00:28:43You said you're on the hook for eight more.
00:28:46I have,
00:28:47yeah,
00:28:47Kenny got into my pocket.
00:28:51Trainers will do that,
00:28:52Kenny.
00:28:53You know that.
00:28:53You don't think,
00:28:54I don't know that.
00:28:55I got,
00:28:55listen,
00:28:55I've been showing horses here for 40 something years,
00:29:00and we're at a big show right now.
00:29:02And I know,
00:29:04but I,
00:29:05but I do all the buying for the quarters.
00:29:07I'm,
00:29:07I'm not worried about that.
00:29:08And I hired the trainer,
00:29:09but Kenny basically,
00:29:12you know,
00:29:12they sit there and you take the money.
00:29:16I,
00:29:16I told him,
00:29:17I said,
00:29:17here,
00:29:17here's X amount of dollars that you have.
00:29:21And he says,
00:29:22you know,
00:29:22he thinks,
00:29:23and I'm Tom Brady.
00:29:24And as y'all know,
00:29:26I didn't make that kind of money when I played the most I made was $300,000.
00:29:30Well,
00:29:31they make that in the first quarter,
00:29:34these quarterbacks nowadays.
00:29:36And so I said,
00:29:37now here's my wife's going,
00:29:39Oh,
00:29:39Oh,
00:29:40we're building a house and you're taking this money.
00:29:43And I said,
00:29:44Hey,
00:29:44you know,
00:29:45we're going to be good.
00:29:47We're going to be good.
00:29:47It's going to be fine.
00:29:48And so I told Kenny,
00:29:52here's your money.
00:29:52He did overspend.
00:29:54He did by $40,000.
00:29:58He overspent by 40,000.
00:30:01And so,
00:30:01but he's kind of like,
00:30:04you know him so well,
00:30:05he's kind of like,
00:30:06okay,
00:30:06it's all right.
00:30:07It's all right,
00:30:08Kenny.
00:30:08It's okay.
00:30:09Such a big personality.
00:30:11Okay.
00:30:11It's fine.
00:30:11It's fine.
00:30:12I don't have it,
00:30:13but it's fine.
00:30:17But yeah,
00:30:17we're back in.
00:30:18And then,
00:30:18you know,
00:30:20it's just fun.
00:30:22You know,
00:30:22I'm excited about,
00:30:24I'm 70,
00:30:26I'm 77 years old and I,
00:30:28I need that rush.
00:30:30I don't can't play in the quarter horses while our stallions have been winning for years.
00:30:35And our produce had done really well.
00:30:37This is a different game,
00:30:40you know,
00:30:41so maybe go to the Breeders' Cup.
00:30:45Shoot.
00:30:46Maybe you win it.
00:30:47I told Kurt,
00:30:51if I get in the Breeders' Cup with my mare and we win,
00:30:55that race is on a Friday.
00:30:57Would that be correct?
00:30:58Would it be on a Friday?
00:30:59Yes.
00:30:59I won't be there on a Sunday.
00:31:01I will call in sick because I'll still be celebrating.
00:31:05Yeah.
00:31:05I won't be there.
00:31:06Where's Terry?
00:31:07He's in San Diego.
00:31:09He rented out a hotel.
00:31:11Oh my God.
00:31:17So,
00:31:18so Terry,
00:31:18look what I'm drinking.
00:31:20Look what I'm drinking out of.
00:31:22See that?
00:31:23Key.
00:31:24My wife bought me the key.
00:31:27So where are you now?
00:31:29And what have you done with all your fabulous quarter horses?
00:31:32Because I didn't actually realize you were that involved in the quarter horses.
00:31:37I looked up all your stallions.
00:31:39My favorite one is Mr.
00:31:40Hollywood.
00:31:41By the way,
00:31:42he's beautiful.
00:31:43Where are the horses now?
00:31:45He's a Bay Roan.
00:31:46He's a young horse.
00:31:47Yeah.
00:31:48They are great horses.
00:31:50The others are young horses that we have raised and are putting into the
00:31:53breeding program,
00:31:55but we'll sell a lot of those.
00:31:57But right now there's a massive show going on in Fort Worth called the
00:32:01WCHA World Confirmation Horse Association.
00:32:05It's huge.
00:32:06A lot of money.
00:32:07And yesterday my two-year-old mare got second,
00:32:15got reserved by a horse called Speechless,
00:32:19one of our great young stallions.
00:32:21And then the mare that won it is by Speechless.
00:32:24So I went one and two.
00:32:26And that's pretty amazing.
00:32:27We've won about,
00:32:28I don't know,
00:32:30eight or nine world titles already at this show.
00:32:34So our breeding program is pretty solid for the quarter horses.
00:32:37And I stand at a running horse that we use for ranch.
00:32:42We're breeding him for ranch running.
00:32:43I actually,
00:32:44I took two thoroughbred mares that Kenny had that couldn't run and I'm
00:32:50breeding them to him and I may win the All-American.
00:32:54You never know.
00:32:55Wow.
00:32:56Do you show them yourself?
00:32:57So yeah,
00:32:57we're still heavily involved in quarter horses.
00:33:00Do you show them yourself?
00:33:01Can we see Terry Bradshaw trotting down,
00:33:04showing them?
00:33:05It's awesome.
00:33:07Well,
00:33:08you can.
00:33:10Yeah,
00:33:10you can't at the world show in November.
00:33:12My wife and I,
00:33:13my whole family shows horses.
00:33:15My granddaughter's already got six world titles.
00:33:17She's amazing.
00:33:18My wife's way better shore than me because she's,
00:33:21it's that woman's touch,
00:33:23that patience.
00:33:26She's just so cool and calm.
00:33:27Me,
00:33:28I'm on the,
00:33:28I'm on the muscle or on the bid or whatever you call it.
00:33:31I'm sweating.
00:33:32And you know,
00:33:33like I'm focused and dialed in.
00:33:35I don't want that horse to act up.
00:33:37And when he does,
00:33:38I just perspire.
00:33:40She's just calm and cool and excellent.
00:33:44But the whole family shows the whole family shows,
00:33:47which is fine.
00:33:48Yeah.
00:33:49Terry,
00:33:49you are a cowboy.
00:33:51A lot of people don't realize that.
00:33:53Well,
00:33:55I,
00:33:56yeah,
00:33:56I'm in the Angus business too.
00:33:58We raise Angus cattle.
00:33:59So yeah,
00:34:00I'm,
00:34:00I'm,
00:34:01I grew,
00:34:03I grew up and became a cowboy.
00:34:05Then a football took over.
00:34:07But I got right into ranching once in 1971,
00:34:11I bought 400 acres in Louisiana and went into commercial cattle business.
00:34:15And then I wrote a,
00:34:16a cutting horse called storm out of stormy day more about 14,
00:34:21two.
00:34:21So I was always in the cattle business,
00:34:25always riding horses,
00:34:26stuff like that.
00:34:27And yeah,
00:34:28I love that.
00:34:29You know,
00:34:29I love that.
00:34:30It's a good life,
00:34:32Randy.
00:34:32It's,
00:34:32it's just a good life.
00:34:33It's just get up early in the morning.
00:34:35You go through your livestock,
00:34:37you feed your horses in the farm,
00:34:38you check on your cattle,
00:34:40you do what you got to do.
00:34:41You round them up and so on and so forth.
00:34:44And yeah,
00:34:45it's a,
00:34:46that's,
00:34:46that's the life I enjoy.
00:34:48We'll be right back after these messages for part two of our interview with Terry Bradshaw.

00:37:55We all win.
00:37:57Terry,
00:37:57the other two horses that you have with Kenny McPeak,
00:38:00what have they raced yet?
00:38:01What's the story on them?
00:38:02No,
00:38:03no power or a,
00:38:05um,
00:38:06is a stud.
00:38:07I don't know much about him because,
00:38:09uh,
00:38:11I went to,
00:38:12uh,
00:38:12Saratoga and watched him work out huge.
00:38:16My God,
00:38:17he's big.
00:38:18Uh,
00:38:18then he got hurt.
00:38:20And so he's not back in training in the Philly.
00:38:23I don't even know her name.
00:38:25Nobody even says a word about her.
00:38:27She'll probably win everything,
00:38:28but I,
00:38:29no,
00:38:29I don't,
00:38:30I don't know anything about her.
00:38:31Never seen her.
00:38:32I've not seen the only horse I've seen that I bought is power or,
00:38:36um,
00:38:38the rest,
00:38:39uh,
00:38:39haven't seen,
00:38:40haven't seen him at all.
00:38:41Well,
00:38:41I mean,
00:38:41I'm gone all the time.
00:38:43I travel all the time.
00:38:44I don't have,
00:38:44I'm not home.
00:38:46We're home probably 75 days a year.
00:38:50So,
00:38:50you know,
00:38:52he keeps saying,
00:38:53you got to come up.
00:38:53You got to come up.
00:38:54Kenny,
00:38:54I can't come up.
00:38:55You know,
00:38:56if I come up there and can,
00:38:57I'm wasting time.
00:38:58I'm not making money.
00:38:59I'm not making money.
00:39:00Then I got,
00:39:01I can't buy horses.
00:39:02You know,
00:39:03I can't do the things we enjoy doing.
00:39:05So I have not seen,
00:39:07you know,
00:39:07I wouldn't want anybody to think I'm some thoroughbred,
00:39:10you know,
00:39:11I'm not,
00:39:12I mean,
00:39:12I'm studying it,
00:39:14you know,
00:39:14I'm studying it and I love studying it.
00:39:16You know,
00:39:17such as,
00:39:18you know,
00:39:19taken by the wind.
00:39:19I mean,
00:39:20I love,
00:39:21you know,
00:39:21I looked up her,
00:39:22her side,
00:39:23her dad,
00:39:24you know,
00:39:24rock your world.
00:39:26And I looked up for grabs her mother.
00:39:28And I just studied their pedigree.
00:39:30And I went,
00:39:30Ooh,
00:39:31wow.
00:39:31Bread pretty good.
00:39:32You know,
00:39:33young,
00:39:34young stallions.
00:39:35Yeah.
00:39:35Not bad.
00:39:36So let's,
00:39:36so let's talk about that a little bit.
00:39:38I just came across a photo of you.
00:39:40Um,
00:39:41I think it was taken September 24 at the Keeneland September sale.
00:39:46And you got,
00:39:48you got your sales catalog in your hand and you are,
00:39:51you are grinning from ear to ear.
00:39:53Did I have it upside down?
00:40:00You really enjoy that,
00:40:02that part of the sport.
00:40:03Oh,
00:40:04my,
00:40:04my thrill in the horse business is breeding.
00:40:09That's why I like mares racing fillies.
00:40:13Uh,
00:40:14I love the breeding.
00:40:16That's my,
00:40:17my one thing I'm really good at is selective breeding and,
00:40:22uh,
00:40:24going to a thoroughbred sale.
00:40:25Randy,
00:40:25I've already told you,
00:40:26cause I don't know what I'm doing.
00:40:27I'm standing on the rail one year and they're walking these horses out back at the sale barn.
00:40:33I'm there for the sale and I'm watching this horse walk and I'm doing this.
00:40:38I don't even have a book and I'm watching her and I'm in the halter and performance business.
00:40:44So I'm a confirmation guy.
00:40:46Um,
00:40:47and I'm watching her walk and she comes by and I walk and Steve comes over.
00:40:51He said,
00:40:51what are you doing?
00:40:52I said,
00:40:53I'm watching that mare right there.
00:40:56She's comes back around and he gets her number.
00:40:59I said,
00:40:59she's gorgeous.
00:41:00Look at that thing.
00:41:01And I'm just watching so pretty.
00:41:04And he said,
00:41:05that's an Indian Charlie.
00:41:08I went,
00:41:09Oh,
00:41:09so that's how I felt in love with Indian Charlie.
00:41:12All right.
00:41:13And so I'm watching,
00:41:14really?
00:41:15He said,
00:41:15are you going to try to buy her?
00:41:17I said,
00:41:18yeah,
00:41:19I think I will.
00:41:20So I go in there and she was $650,000 before I even burped.
00:41:27And I'm like,
00:41:30Oh my God.
00:41:32So much for that.
00:41:37Hey,
00:41:38that's,
00:41:39that told me I had a good eye,
00:41:40you know,
00:41:41but,
00:41:41uh,
00:41:41yeah,
00:41:42yeah,
00:41:43I,
00:41:43I swear to,
00:41:44I swear to everybody that's listening.
00:41:46I look at them and I look at them as,
00:41:48as I'm in Hawker.
00:41:50I look at them as Hawker.
00:41:52I see how pretty they are.
00:41:53I can't stand ugly horse.
00:41:55And,
00:41:55uh,
00:41:57you know,
00:41:57they just have to be pretty of the horses that I just recently bought.
00:42:02All of them are attractive animals.
00:42:04You know,
00:42:04now the rest of them,
00:42:05I don't know anything about that's where,
00:42:07you know,
00:42:08Kenny does,
00:42:09you know,
00:42:10they watch him walk.
00:42:11I remember this one time,
00:42:12this friend of mine,
00:42:13we were at the sales and he says,
00:42:15look at that rascal walk.
00:42:16Oh my God.
00:42:17Look at that.
00:42:18And I went walking.
00:42:21And he says,
00:42:22God,
00:42:23try,
00:42:23try it for me.
00:42:24Oh my God.
00:42:26This thing's amazing.
00:42:28I went,
00:42:29what are you doing?
00:42:30You're walking at walk.
00:42:31And trot.
00:42:32And that's amazing.
00:42:34I didn't get it,
00:42:35but they bought it.
00:42:37They paid 400,000 for it.
00:42:38That sucker couldn't even come out of the chute.
00:42:40So much for walking and trotting.
00:42:43So I don't know.
00:42:44You know what?
00:42:45If you're,
00:42:46if it was always about money,
00:42:48if it only takes money to be successful in the thoroughbred business,
00:42:53guys like me and most of everybody could never get in it.
00:42:57And I was watching,
00:42:58is it Rapoli?
00:42:59That's a guy that's,
00:43:00I watched him the other day in the sale.
00:43:03I was reading the sales and he had spent,
00:43:06he spent like $10 million on eight horses.
00:43:10And I'm like,
00:43:11Oh my God.
00:43:13Can you imagine?
00:43:1410 million of him is 10,000 to me and 10,000.
00:43:17I'm bragging now.
00:43:18Yeah.
00:43:18But God.
00:43:20And I'm thinking,
00:43:21and I told Kenny,
00:43:22I said,
00:43:22Kenny,
00:43:22you got any billionaire partners in your,
00:43:28you got any of those billionaires?
00:43:30As I call,
00:43:31I told Kenny,
00:43:31I said,
00:43:32you're just a,
00:43:33you're just a,
00:43:34a real,
00:43:35you're kind of a working thoroughbred trainer.
00:43:38You know,
00:43:39this gets a bunch.
00:43:40He studies it.
00:43:41He's got something he looks at.
00:43:43I told him I'm going to hang out with him.
00:43:45He's going to teach me what he's doing.
00:43:47I'm not going to share it with anybody,
00:43:48but I said,
00:43:49you're doing something.
00:43:50Cause he's too successful without having all these 2 million,
00:43:55million and a half dollar horses.
00:43:56So yeah,
00:43:58if it was all about money,
00:43:59uh,
00:44:00the sheiks and everybody,
00:44:02they'd win every race and risk of us to sit back there going,
00:44:04wow,
00:44:05they're amazing.
00:44:05Wish I had,
00:44:06I wish I was making a billion dollars a day,
00:44:08but I'm not.
00:44:09So,
00:44:09but that's not the case.
00:44:11You can't look inside them.
00:44:12You don't know their heart.
00:44:13You know,
00:44:14you don't know.
00:44:16You don't know if they're going to run.
00:44:17God can.
00:44:18Hey,
00:44:18how would you like to spend $3 million on a horse?
00:44:22Bread.
00:44:23Great.
00:44:24Top and bottom.
00:44:25And it can't run a lick.
00:44:28I think I'd,
00:44:29that'd be devastating,
00:44:31but you know,
00:44:33then seem to bomb come back next year.
00:44:35Just do it all over again.
00:44:38So a little Terry Bradshaw horse racing trivia here.
00:44:41You ready,
00:44:42Terry?
00:44:43Let's have it.
00:44:44All right.
00:44:44So you had great R.
00:44:46Right.
00:44:47Who ran six times.
00:44:48A lot of people don't remember great R.
00:44:50He was a very underappreciated horse.
00:44:52He had six.
00:44:54Yeah.
00:44:54Yeah.
00:44:55Yeah.
00:44:55One five.
00:44:56One five of the six.
00:44:58Right.
00:44:58Triple digit,
00:44:59minor speed figures galore.
00:45:00You led him into the winner's circle in the New Orleans handicap.
00:45:04Right.
00:45:04Right.
00:45:05Right.
00:45:05He lost one race in his life.
00:45:08Okay.
00:45:09You remember who he lost that race to?
00:45:11No.
00:45:12Who?
00:45:13Bill Parcells.
00:45:15Oh,
00:45:18who did Bill own?
00:45:20He owned a horse called Saratoga snacks.
00:45:22That was one of his best horses that he ever owned.
00:45:26Is that right?
00:45:27That's the horse that beat great R.
00:45:29So you lost to Bill Parcells in the only,
00:45:32the only time great R got beat.
00:45:35Yeah.
00:45:35Great R was,
00:45:36Hey,
00:45:36great R was something.
00:45:38That sucker could.
00:45:39And then,
00:45:40and the,
00:45:40and if there was a knock on great R as a racehorse,
00:45:42he was a front runner.
00:45:44And the knock was,
00:45:45if you get up to him,
00:45:46he'll,
00:45:47he won't,
00:45:47he won't fight,
00:45:48you know,
00:45:49but at the,
00:45:50uh,
00:45:50Louisiana Derby or the,
00:45:52whatever they call that down there,
00:45:53we won that thing two years in a row.
00:45:54We'll also run it with mission impossible.
00:45:57Um,
00:45:58but he got,
00:45:59he lost the lead coming out of turn four and I'm sitting there and I'm like,
00:46:03Oh man.
00:46:04And then he came back and he dug in and he fought and won by half a length.
00:46:10I was like,
00:46:11God,
00:46:11that's so cool.
00:46:12That's when I,
00:46:13I,
00:46:13my one of my favorite pictures is not in here,
00:46:16but it was me leading him off the track.
00:46:19That was so cool.
00:46:20And then we thought we had,
00:46:22you know,
00:46:22he just couldn't stay.
00:46:24He couldn't stay together.
00:46:25You,
00:46:25both my horses were,
00:46:26were eligible for the Derby Preakness and so forth,
00:46:30but he,
00:46:30he stayed hurt and,
00:46:32uh,
00:46:33could,
00:46:33got ready to the breeder's cup and,
00:46:35uh,
00:46:35be one of the favorites there.
00:46:37He got hurt.
00:46:38So that was very frustrating.
00:46:40And then we sold him,
00:46:41uh,
00:46:42his breeding rights,
00:46:43to Taylor.
00:46:44Um,
00:46:45and then he just wasn't a breeding horse,
00:46:47you know?
00:46:48All right.
00:46:48So you mentioned breeder's cup.
00:46:49Let's circle this back around now.
00:46:51Okay.
00:46:52There's gotta be nothing in your world.
00:46:54Like winning the Superbowl.
00:46:55I mean,
00:46:55you won four of them.
00:46:56Right.
00:46:57Right.
00:46:57But,
00:46:57but that's gotta be the ultimate,
00:46:59the ultimate.
00:47:00Now,
00:47:00but what about winning a breeder's cup brace?
00:47:03I don't know.
00:47:05How do you think that would feel?
00:47:07I already told you,
00:47:08I'm not going to work Sunday.
00:47:13I,
00:47:13I don't,
00:47:15I'm one of those people that doesn't like to think about greatness.
00:47:22Okay.
00:47:22It scares me.
00:47:24Um,
00:47:25playing in a Superbowl,
00:47:27uh,
00:47:27I'm in charge.
00:47:28I'm in control.
00:47:30Um,
00:47:30and I'm nervous.
00:47:31Cause I don't want to screw up.
00:47:34Uh,
00:47:34I know my legacy depends on winning the Superbowl.
00:47:38And so the greatest stress I've ever had in my life was those four Superbowls.
00:47:43We won,
00:47:43um,
00:47:44the breeder's cup.
00:47:46Uh,
00:47:47I'll be there.
00:47:48If we,
00:47:49if we make it that far,
00:47:50if we get there,
00:47:51everything goes all right.
00:47:52And training goes okay.
00:47:53And,
00:47:55um,
00:47:55she makes it there.
00:47:56And I'm sure I'm going to talk myself into saying,
00:48:01look,
00:48:01this is,
00:48:02this is pretty good.
00:48:03Just getting here with a horse.
00:48:06Well,
00:48:06it is,
00:48:06it is 20 grand.
00:48:08Come on.
00:48:08$20,000.
00:48:09I'm in the breeder's cup.
00:48:11Um,
00:48:12and I'm going to talk myself into low expectations,
00:48:16I guess,
00:48:17cause I can't,
00:48:18I don't have control of this.
00:48:20So many variables come into play when you win those kinds of races.
00:48:23Uh,
00:48:24I've watched them at hall for years.
00:48:26On television.
00:48:27I've been to a couple of breeder's cup myself.
00:48:30So I'll be nervous.
00:48:33Um,
00:48:34I'll be real nervous.
00:48:36Uh,
00:48:37and then I'll be like a proud dad.
00:48:38I'll just go,
00:48:39God,
00:48:40I just hope she rose runs good and doesn't embarrass herself.
00:48:43You know?
00:48:44Um,
00:48:45I guess,
00:48:46I guess I'm going to do everything I can to diffuse the pressure.
00:48:52You know?
00:48:53Okay.
00:48:53It's just great to be here.
00:48:54Just great to be here.
00:48:55Terry.
00:48:56Cause if I do make it there,
00:48:57you know,
00:48:57the press is going to ask me.
00:48:58Oh,
00:48:59that's just a nice horse.
00:49:00She,
00:49:01you know,
00:49:01she's,
00:49:01you know,
00:49:02she's just a nice horse.
00:49:03I'm really proud of her.
00:49:04She,
00:49:04she'll try hard.
00:49:06She's a dad,
00:49:07dad,
00:49:07dad,
00:49:07dad.
00:49:07And then as she's coming down the stretch,
00:49:12if she's,
00:49:13if she's up there,
00:49:16yeah,
00:49:17now I'm going to need to take four or five Xanax.
00:49:19That's when,
00:49:20that's when,
00:49:22Randy,
00:49:24listen,
00:49:25you guys,
00:49:25that is an almost unthinkable,
00:49:29unthinkable,
00:49:30unimaginable moment for me to think that I would be able to be a part of this.
00:49:37is something like that.
00:49:39And to win it,
00:49:41you know,
00:49:42I,
00:49:43I'm thinking you go,
00:49:45well,
00:49:45why not me?
00:49:47I got a good horse,
00:49:49you know,
00:49:50why not me?
00:49:51So you can see I'm already on back and forth here and there,
00:49:55but definitely,
00:49:57definitely I'm going to try to diffuse the moment so that I can just enjoy it.
00:50:03Because if not,
00:50:04I'll be in,
00:50:05you know,
00:50:05I'll be a nervous wreck.
00:50:07I just want her to run good.
00:50:08If she gets there,
00:50:09run good,
00:50:11make herself.
00:50:12She should be proud of herself.
00:50:13As you tell your kid,
00:50:14you don't ever tell your kids,
00:50:16I'm so proud of you.
00:50:17You say to your kids,
00:50:18aren't you proud of yourself?
00:50:20And then you go,
00:50:21I know I am.
00:50:22So that's psychology.
00:50:24That's how you kind of do that.
00:50:25So if she can understand me,
00:50:27I'll just say,
00:50:27aren't you proud of yourself?
00:50:28You've done good.
00:50:29Here we are.
00:50:30We made it this far.
00:50:32And you're a handsome thing.
00:50:33I hadn't never,
00:50:34you know,
00:50:34I'm,
00:50:34I'm your owner.
00:50:35I've never met you.
00:50:36And then she'll bite you,
00:50:39right?
00:50:40Yeah.
00:50:40Oh yeah.
00:50:41I remember I went up to,
00:50:42I went up to a great gradar and he's sticking his head out of his stall.
00:50:46I went,
00:50:47there's my boy.
00:50:47And I went up there and that sucker lunged at me.
00:50:49And I went,
00:50:50I know better.
00:50:53I know better.
00:50:54But that,
00:50:55I went,
00:50:56you,
00:50:57sorry,
00:50:57no good.
00:50:58You know,
00:50:59but yeah,
00:50:59yeah.
00:51:00My horses don't do that.
00:51:01My horses don't lunge and bite.
00:51:03They're,
00:51:03they're not a bread like that.
00:51:06So,
00:51:06but yeah,
00:51:07yeah.
00:51:08Fine.
00:51:08If she wins the breeders cup,
00:51:10she can bite.
00:51:10She can kick me.
00:51:11She'll show us.
00:51:12We'll get ready.
00:51:13We'll get ready for the next year.
00:51:15You know what I mean?
00:51:16That'd be fun.
00:51:18Well,
00:51:18Terry,
00:51:18we're going to let you go.
00:51:19Uh,
00:51:19it was fascinating and fun.
00:51:21And thank you so much for doing this.
00:51:23Best of luck with taken by the wind and all your pursuits with thoroughbreds.
00:51:27Hope to see you become a bigger part of the game.
00:51:28Cause you bring some life and fun to it.
00:51:31So I am.
00:51:32You know what?
00:51:33It was fun going to the sale and having,
00:51:36uh,
00:51:36and Bob Baffert.
00:51:38And,
00:51:38you know,
00:51:38I'm sitting there talking to all these guys,
00:51:40like I belong in their world.
00:51:43You know,
00:51:43there's,
00:51:44they,
00:51:44they really were nice to me.
00:51:46And as my wife always says,
00:51:48when famous people are nice to me or whatever,
00:51:51she says,
00:51:52you're Terry Bradshaw.
00:51:53And I went,
00:51:54Oh,
00:51:54what's that got to do with it?
00:51:55She said,
00:51:56you're Terry Bradshaw.
00:51:58And I went,
00:51:58I don't get it.
00:51:59You mean,
00:51:59they're just not going to be nice to everybody.
00:52:01She,
00:52:01but to know all those guys and,
00:52:06uh,
00:52:06be able to call them friends of mine and go down to the barn.
00:52:09I went down to who,
00:52:11who won the Kentucky Derby this year.
00:52:13Bring me up to speed.
00:52:14What the trainer's name,
00:52:16Bill Mott.
00:52:17Yeah.
00:52:17Yeah.
00:52:17I said,
00:52:18I'm going to go.
00:52:18I'm yeah.
00:52:19I'm going to go see,
00:52:20I'm going to go see Bill Mott at Saratoga.
00:52:23And I said,
00:52:24where's this,
00:52:24where's this stable?
00:52:25So they took me over there.
00:52:26And I was,
00:52:27there was Bill say,
00:52:28Hey Bill,
00:52:28Terry Bradshaw.
00:52:29How are you doing,
00:52:30man?
00:52:30We started shooting the breeze,
00:52:32took the love on the horse,
00:52:33very calm horse.
00:52:36What's his name?
00:52:36What's his name again?
00:52:38Sovereignty.
00:52:39Yeah.
00:52:39Sovereignty.
00:52:39Beautiful animal.
00:52:41And,
00:52:41and,
00:52:41and it was just like,
00:52:43Oh man,
00:52:43this is cool.
00:52:44You know,
00:52:44get to walk around,
00:52:45meet all these superstar trainers.
00:52:47And then there's Kenny,
00:52:49you know,
00:52:50my man.
00:52:52So anyway,
00:52:53I hope I,
00:52:53I hope I endure and last and we have fun with it.
00:52:56We will have fun with it.
00:52:58No question about that.
00:52:59So,
00:53:00and thank,
00:53:00thank all of you for having me on this.
00:53:02I've never done anything like this.
00:53:04I've done it for the quarter horses,
00:53:05but never like this.
00:53:06So,
00:53:06I don't know if I said anything good or bad,
00:53:09or I don't know.
00:53:10You were,
00:53:11you were awesome.
00:53:12Thank you for the time.

00:54:21In this week's edition of First Things First,
00:54:27I caught up with Hall of Famer Mike Smith.
00:54:35Big money, Mike.
00:54:37Winning your ring.
00:54:37Breeders' Cup Classic with your man, Bob.
00:54:39Yeah,
00:54:40ain't that something?
00:54:41I've been on the bench a while,
00:54:42but he finally pulled me off,
00:54:43and I hit a couple of threes for him,
00:54:47and things are going well,
00:54:48so maybe that'll carry over to Breeders' Cup.
00:54:50Hey, look,
00:54:50he just put me on this horse.
00:54:52I don't know if I get him back or not,
00:54:53but it's glad to fill in.
00:54:55If not,
00:54:55and hopefully I can ride him down the road.
00:54:58Tell me about your trip.
00:54:59Was that the trip you wanted?
00:55:00Did he get a bit gulky when you turned for him?
00:55:02Yeah,
00:55:03he did that,
00:55:03which gives me even a better feeling about him
00:55:05because there's room to grow, right?
00:55:06I mean,
00:55:07when he gets more focused,
00:55:08he's going to be even better.
00:55:09I thought I'd be laying a little further back.
00:55:12They didn't go very quick early,
00:55:14and when I saw Breedman ease back,
00:55:16I said,
00:55:16well,
00:55:16I'm going after him
00:55:17because someone needs to,
00:55:19and Bob told me that this horse
00:55:21was doing exceptionally well,
00:55:22so when he tells me that,
00:55:23that usually means
00:55:24I can get brave a little earlier,
00:55:25so that's what we did.
00:55:26Big Mike is back.
00:55:27Well done.
00:55:28Cheers, mate.
00:55:29Amen.
00:55:29Thanks, man.
00:55:30Yeah, buddy.
00:55:31Nice job.
00:55:37Many thanks to Mike,
00:55:38and yes,
00:55:39the band is back together,
00:55:41certainly looking forward
00:55:42to the Breeders' Cup Classic
00:55:43with Nevada Beach.
00:55:45All right,
00:55:45let's talk about Santa Anita.

00:56:07So many reasons to come on out
00:56:08to Santa Anita,
00:56:09one o'clock post-time on Saturday.
00:56:11Welcome back,
00:56:13and wasn't that,
00:56:14like I said,
00:56:15I warned you,
00:56:15that was a great interview
00:56:16with Terry Bradshaw.
00:56:17Randy,
00:56:18I'm going to have to lean on you
00:56:19for some of these races
00:56:20that we're talking about
00:56:20coming up this week
00:56:21because there's no PPs out yet
00:56:23for the Breeders' Futurity,
00:56:24though I know that Ned Toffee
00:56:25will be the big favorite in there.
00:56:27Also,
00:56:27there's no PPs out yet
00:56:28for the Coolmore Turf Mile.
00:56:30I think in that,
00:56:31you've got a couple
00:56:32of very interesting
00:56:33European horses coming in,
00:56:35Diego Velasquez,
00:56:36and also,
00:56:37who is trained by Aidan O'Brien,
00:56:39by Frankel,
00:56:40Group One winner,
00:56:40and you have another horse
00:56:43that is coming in.
00:56:44What's the heck this is?
00:56:45Woodshanna.
00:56:46Woodshanna,
00:56:47that's it,
00:56:47owned by Resolute Racing
00:56:49coming off a win
00:56:50in the Pre-Jacques Le Marat.
00:56:52So,
00:56:52they're sending the A team
00:56:54for this race,
00:56:55the Europeans.
00:56:56I would think
00:56:57in some manner,
00:56:59they would kind of
00:57:00dominate the race,
00:57:01first and second,
00:57:02first and third,
00:57:03something like that.
00:57:04Randy,
00:57:04is there anyone else
00:57:05I'm missing
00:57:06that is a big factor in there?
00:57:07No,
00:57:08I think you nailed it.
00:57:09The Coolmore Mile,
00:57:10Turf Mile is,
00:57:11you know,
00:57:12Diego Velasquez
00:57:13is going to be really tough
00:57:14to beat in there,
00:57:15right?
00:57:16He ran probably
00:57:18one of,
00:57:19if not the best race
00:57:20in his career
00:57:20in his last start.
00:57:21He was sort of lucky
00:57:22to win,
00:57:23but he still got
00:57:25the job done
00:57:26against a pretty tough
00:57:26competition.
00:57:28You mentioned
00:57:29the Breeders Futurity.
00:57:31Ted Noffy
00:57:31is going to be
00:57:32a huge favorite
00:57:32in there.
00:57:33But here's a horse
00:57:34in the Breeders Futurity
00:57:35I want you to
00:57:35keep your eye on.
00:57:36If Ted Noffy
00:57:37doesn't win
00:57:38for whatever reason,
00:57:39maybe he just gets
00:57:40flat out run
00:57:41because Kenny McPeak
00:57:43has a really,
00:57:44really nice horse
00:57:45in here
00:57:46by the name
00:57:46of Blackout Time.
00:57:49Go back and watch
00:57:50if you get a chance
00:57:50his race at Churchill Downs
00:57:52his debut
00:57:52when he finished second
00:57:53and then they stretched him
00:57:54out to a mile
00:57:55at Ellis Park.
00:57:56Boy,
00:57:56did he look good.
00:57:58And I wouldn't be
00:57:59surprised at all
00:57:59for him really
00:58:00to give Ted Noffy
00:58:01a serious run
00:58:02for his money.
00:58:03So the other big race
00:58:05for two-year-olds
00:58:05over the weekend
00:58:06was actually two
00:58:07for the two-year-old males.
00:58:08We had the Champagne
00:58:09at Belmont
00:58:10but the American Pharaoh
00:58:11is out at Santa Anita
00:58:13on Saturday.
00:58:15And first of all,
00:58:15does anybody know
00:58:16I haven't heard
00:58:17Baffert's explanation
00:58:18for why Brant's
00:58:19not running in this?
00:58:20He's training him
00:58:20up to the Breeders Cup.
00:58:21Training him up
00:58:22to the Breeders Cup.
00:58:22That's for you, Bill.
00:58:23Just for you.
00:58:25Just for you.
00:58:26Just for me.
00:58:28But even without
00:58:29his best two-year-old
00:58:30in the race,
00:58:31Baffert still has
00:58:32four of the six
00:58:33starters in here.
00:58:35He's won the race
00:58:3613 times.
00:58:37He'll be going for 14.
00:58:39I think Desert Gate
00:58:40is really a standout.
00:58:42Now, he's the one
00:58:42who gave Bob Brant
00:58:43a real tough fight
00:58:45last time out
00:58:45in the Del Mar Futurity.
00:58:47Only lost to him
00:58:48by a length.
00:58:49Had some traffic problems
00:58:50along the way.
00:58:51I think he's the best
00:58:52of the Bafferts
00:58:53and I think he's the best
00:58:54in here, period.
00:58:56So it looks like
00:58:57Mr. Baffert
00:58:57is going to be
00:58:58well-represented
00:58:59in the American Pharaoh
00:59:01stakes
00:59:01and presumably also
00:59:02in the Breeders Cup
00:59:04Juvenile.
00:59:05Yeah, definitely
00:59:06the horse to beat.
00:59:07Tough trip for him
00:59:07last time
00:59:08and I'm sure
00:59:09Bob's not delighted
00:59:10with the one hole
00:59:11but hey, he's got
00:59:12half the field in there
00:59:13so I'm sure
00:59:14they can work
00:59:14something out.
00:59:16Yeah, I mean,
00:59:16I preface this real quick
00:59:18by saying that
00:59:19I think Brant
00:59:20watching his two races
00:59:21so far
00:59:22is probably better
00:59:23with a target
00:59:24than he is
00:59:25on the front end.
00:59:26He looked much
00:59:27more dynamic
00:59:27in his debut
00:59:28when he was sitting
00:59:30third than he did
00:59:30when he set the pace
00:59:31last time
00:59:33out in the Del Mar
00:59:33Futurity.
00:59:34Having said that
00:59:34I thought Desert Gate
00:59:37was the best horse
00:59:38when he was second
00:59:39to Brant
00:59:40in the Del Mar
00:59:40Futurity
00:59:41with the trip
00:59:41that he had
00:59:42compared to the trip
00:59:43that Brant had
00:59:44so yeah,
00:59:45I'm really looking forward
00:59:46to seeing Desert Gate run.
00:59:47All right,
00:59:49let's turn our attention
00:59:50now to New York
00:59:51where the Champagne
00:59:52is going
00:59:53as the seventh race
00:59:54at Aqueduct
00:59:55on Saturday
00:59:56and talk about
00:59:58heavy favorites
00:59:58and this is a
00:59:59fascinating horse.
01:00:01I mean,
01:00:01talk about jumping
01:00:02off the page.
01:00:03It's our time.
01:00:04One time out
01:00:05at Saratoga
01:00:06wins by 17
01:00:07and three quarter lengths.
01:00:10It's a 94
01:00:10buyer figure
01:00:12unless he regresses
01:00:14or somebody jumps up
01:00:15by proves
01:00:17by 10 lengths.
01:00:18This race should be
01:00:18absolutely no contest.
01:00:21Tom Amos
01:00:21picks this race
01:00:22the one turn mile
01:00:23over the Breeders
01:00:24Futurity
01:00:25at Keeneland
01:00:27but,
01:00:28you know,
01:00:29this looks like
01:00:30a very exciting horse
01:00:31and I can't see
01:00:32him losing this.
01:00:33He's certainly
01:00:33the horse to beat
01:00:34in there.
01:00:35Watch out for
01:00:35Napoleon Solo.
01:00:37He won a
01:00:38restricted maiden
01:00:39very nicely
01:00:40indeed a son
01:00:41of Liam's map
01:00:41and then talking
01:00:42we'll do some
01:00:43running late
01:00:44for Danny Gargan
01:00:45but it's definitely
01:00:46his race to lose.
01:00:48The two-year-old
01:00:49Phillies,
01:00:50you know,
01:00:50also are going
01:00:51to be front
01:00:51and center
01:00:52with the
01:00:53Frazette
01:00:54in New York.
01:00:54I think Carmel
01:00:55Coast is probably
01:00:56the horse
01:00:56to beat there
01:00:57and then the
01:00:57Alcibiades
01:00:58the same thing
01:00:59at Keeneland.
01:01:01Tommy Joe
01:01:02is sort of
01:01:04the female
01:01:04mirror image
01:01:06of Ted Noffy.
01:01:08They're both
01:01:08owned by
01:01:08Spind Thrift Farm.
01:01:09They're both
01:01:09trained by Todd
01:01:10Plutcher.
01:01:11They're both
01:01:11by Into Mischief.
01:01:12They're both
01:01:13two for two
01:01:14lifetime
01:01:14they both
01:01:15ran toward
01:01:16the end
01:01:16of July
01:01:17the first
01:01:17week in
01:01:17August
01:01:18in Saratoga
01:01:18then came
01:01:19back at
01:01:19the end
01:01:19to run
01:01:20the hopeful
01:01:21and spin
01:01:21away
01:01:21respectively.
01:01:23Ted Noffy's
01:01:23won his two
01:01:23races by a total
01:01:24of ten lengths
01:01:25Tommy Joe
01:01:25by ten and
01:01:26a quarter
01:01:26lengths.
01:01:27It's like
01:01:28they're almost
01:01:29identical
01:01:30twins.
01:01:31Twins.
01:01:31The twins.
01:01:32The twins.
01:01:32The twins.
01:01:32The ones
01:01:32of Philly.
01:01:34Hey, did
01:01:34anybody notice
01:01:35that I got
01:01:35the name
01:01:36right this
01:01:36week?
01:01:36I didn't
01:01:37call him
01:01:38Ned Toffy.
01:01:40So after I
01:01:41struggled for
01:01:42about 15
01:01:43minutes the
01:01:43first time
01:01:44that came
01:01:44up.
01:01:45But Randy,
01:01:46you're certainly
01:01:46right about
01:01:47Tommy Joe and
01:01:48also the whole
01:01:48Spend Thrift
01:01:49Todd Pletcher
01:01:50thing with
01:01:51Ted Noffy.
01:01:53Again,
01:01:54this looks like
01:01:55a very chalky
01:01:56race.
01:01:56Again,
01:01:57I don't
01:01:57think you're
01:01:57going to
01:01:57get much
01:01:58in the way
01:01:59of a price.
01:02:00Zoe,
01:02:01what do you
01:02:01think of
01:02:01Tommy Joe?
01:02:02She's definitely
01:02:03the horse to
01:02:04beat.
01:02:04At this point,
01:02:05I think she
01:02:05can beat
01:02:05some of the
01:02:06boys as
01:02:06well.
01:02:07So I'm
01:02:07all in on
01:02:08Tommy Joe.
01:02:09As for the
01:02:09frisette,
01:02:11I do like
01:02:12the horse
01:02:13that Randy
01:02:13mentioned,
01:02:14Carmel
01:02:14Coast,
01:02:15but I like
01:02:15Iron Orchard
01:02:16coming in for
01:02:17Danny Garg
01:02:17and the
01:02:18daughter of
01:02:18Authentic.
01:02:19New York
01:02:19Red,
01:02:19yeah.
01:02:20I like her.
01:02:21What do you
01:02:22think about
01:02:22the Oak
01:02:23Leaf?
01:02:24Baffert's
01:02:24got to
01:02:25win that
01:02:25too,
01:02:25right?
01:02:26Yes,
01:02:27most definitely.
01:02:29Explora and
01:02:30Hamika?
01:02:31I'll take
01:02:32Explora,
01:02:33but Hamika's
01:02:34going to
01:02:34love the
01:02:35stretch out.
01:02:36She wasn't
01:02:37the same
01:02:37filly when
01:02:38she ran
01:02:38last time.
01:02:40Well,
01:02:40that's my
01:02:40question.
01:02:40What's wrong?
01:02:41She looked
01:02:41so good in
01:02:42that race
01:02:42last time.
01:02:43What was
01:02:43her excuse
01:02:44or problem?
01:02:44She had a
01:02:45headache.
01:02:45I don't
01:02:45know,
01:02:46but I think
01:02:47she can
01:02:47bounce back.
01:02:49Yes,
01:02:50it figures
01:02:50to be one
01:02:51of the two
01:02:51Baffert horses
01:02:52in that as
01:02:53well.
01:02:54So,
01:02:54of course,
01:02:54I think
01:02:55someone told
01:02:55me there's
01:02:5526 graded
01:02:57stakes races
01:02:58this weekend.
01:02:59So,
01:02:59let's get
01:03:01tied on
01:03:01and enjoy
01:03:02what should
01:03:03be a
01:03:03tremendous
01:03:04weekend of
01:03:05racing the
01:03:06last big
01:03:06week of
01:03:07Breeders'
01:03:07Cup preps.
01:03:09And we'll
01:03:09know a lot
01:03:09more about
01:03:10the Breeders'
01:03:10Cup come
01:03:11Sunday.
01:03:11Well,
01:03:11actually,
01:03:12we'll have
01:03:12to wait
01:03:12until Monday
01:03:14to sort
01:03:15everything out
01:03:16because there's
01:03:17some big
01:03:17races on
01:03:18Sunday.
01:03:19I did
01:03:19notice,
01:03:19by the way,
01:03:20that Keeneland
01:03:21put out notes
01:03:22a pretty
01:03:25good job
01:03:25of telling
01:03:25who's going
01:03:26to race
01:03:27in each
01:03:27of the
01:03:28races.
01:03:28They only
01:03:29have three
01:03:29definites
01:03:30for this
01:03:30spinster.
01:03:31And,
01:03:31Randy,
01:03:32maybe you
01:03:32know better,
01:03:33Leslie's
01:03:33Rose,
01:03:34Nitrogen,
01:03:35and
01:03:35Torpedo Anna.
01:03:36It's not
01:03:37going to be a
01:03:37three-horse
01:03:37field,
01:03:38is it?
01:03:38I would
01:03:39seriously doubt
01:03:40it's going
01:03:40to be a
01:03:41three-horse
01:03:41field.
01:03:42They'll get
01:03:42a couple
01:03:42of
01:03:42scragglers
01:03:43in there
01:03:43at some
01:03:44point,
01:03:45but I
01:03:46can't see
01:03:46it being
01:03:46more than
01:03:47a five-horse
01:03:47field.
01:03:48Nobody wants
01:03:49to run
01:03:49really against
01:03:51Torpedo Anna,
01:03:52and then you
01:03:54throw Nitrogen
01:03:54in there as
01:03:55well.
01:03:56Yeah,
01:03:57I mean,
01:03:57it's going
01:03:57to be a
01:03:58short field.
01:03:59Yeah,
01:03:59well,
01:03:59Nitrogen and
01:04:00Torpedo Anna
01:04:01alone should
01:04:01be quite an
01:04:02interesting race.
01:04:04And nothing
01:04:04wrong with
01:04:05Leslie's Rose
01:04:05either,
01:04:06but I get
01:04:08so upset
01:04:09when all
01:04:09these big
01:04:09races have
01:04:10three-horses
01:04:11and the
01:04:11Woodward
01:04:12three-horse
01:04:12field,
01:04:13come on,
01:04:14folks,
01:04:14let's get
01:04:15these horses
01:04:15running and
01:04:16put them
01:04:16in these
01:04:17races.
01:04:18It is time
