At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, CARICOM leaders are once again emphasizing peace and stability in the region. From tensions between the United States and Venezuela, to the ongoing crises in Haiti and a call for normalized relations between Cuba and the United States, Caribbean leaders used the platform to urge stronger international cooperation. Here is more in this report.
Transcript
00:00Day five of the Assembly continued under the theme Better Together.
00:05St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonzales
00:08urged the United States to abide by the declaration of peace in the Caribbean.
00:14The recent ramping up of tensions between the USA and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
00:19is most unhelpful to peace and stability in our Caribbean and Latin America.
00:25St. Vincent and the Grenadines calls for the scaling back of actions and rhetoric
00:33which are so inimical to cordial neighborly relations.
00:39In particular, we find the foreign militarization of the waters around Venezuela exceedingly troubling.
00:47Repeatedly, the countries of the Caribbean and Latin America have unanimously declared
00:54our area is zone of peace.
00:58We urge our American friends to abide by this declaration.
01:03Dominica's President, Sylvani Burton, was equally firm,
01:06stressing that the Caribbean must remain free of geopolitical conflicts.
01:11Wherever there is conflict, be it in the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia,
01:19or sad to say, in the Caribbean.
01:25Major powers engaging in geopolitical conflicts result in civilians becoming collateral damage,
01:33economies collapsing, increasing prices and instability.
01:39I want to emphasize here today that there is no place in the Caribbean for war.
01:46The Caribbean is a zone of peace.
01:50Any military conflict in the Caribbean will have significant negative impacts on the Caribbean and Latin America.
01:59There is a better way to resolve differences.
02:03Meanwhile, CARICOM Chair and Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Hulness avoided the Venezuela issue,
02:09instead focusing on climate change and Haiti's humanitarian crisis.
02:14He appealed to the U.N. Secretary Council and Member States for tangible support to help restore stability.
02:21We urge Member States, especially those in the Security Council,
02:26to operationalize the recommendations made by the Secretary General for a transition to a more robust hybrid mechanism
02:33to deal with the situation in Haiti.
02:37We call on Member States to provide the necessary financial and logistic support
02:43to ensure the success of this initiative.
