An e-hailing driver, who went viral for running a red light and nearly hitting a woman at a pedestrian crossing in Kuala Lumpur two days ago, has been charged in court.

Chew Tiong Han, 46, appeared before Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni on Thursday (Sept 25) and pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.

00:28Hishamuddin at 6.30pm on September 23. A video of the near-miss went viral on social media,
00:36showing the car in the right lane almost hitting the pedestrian, causing her belongings to scatter.
00:42Fortunately, she was not injured. Chu was charged under Section 42 Subsection 1 of the Road Transport
00:49Act 1987 and faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to 15,000 ringgit and a minimum
00:56five-year driving ban if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurbatrisha Muhammad Razib sought bail
01:04at 8,000 ringgit. However, Chu's lawyer Guru Sharangit Kaur appealed for a reduction, citing the accused's
01:11financial responsibilities as a divorced father supporting his child and caring for his father
01:17who has heart disease. Magistrate Kairunisak set bail at 7,000 ringgit with one surety. The case was set
01:25for mention on November 18.
