00:00a month 600 just for coffee there's more than your food budget your food budget is 100 bucks a week
00:05that's crazy a lot of these things are just discipline right you just have to do it uh so
00:10for me the motivation behind me doing all these things is just my extreme passion for not being
00:15broke okay like is this where i'm supposed to be is this where i should be considering how long
00:19i've been working my salary and stuff like that i hope i'm not the one that's out of touch with
00:25reality but 400 a month is quite low really okay i can up sikit lah
00:29what's up guys my name is emir welcome back to the money goal today i have
00:39aisha with me again hey aisha hey i come here again with a problem okay okay so last time i feel like
00:48i spoke about how i don't really have a budget for like food and all kind yep do you have one now i do
00:54okay i set a budget of around um is it gila if i said it's like 100 a week for food yeah no that's
01:02not bad at all that's not bad okay then i'm going good barely 20 ringgit a day okay i'm going good
01:07yeah okay anyways okay now that i have a set budget and i realized that there's a lot more things that
01:14i've been paying for that i feel like oh it's sikit je but when you add it all up it jadi so much
01:21yep because okay first is my coffee okay so sometimes i go coffee dengan you know the my
01:30colleagues kan they got office one um once a day sometimes it can be two points a day yeah and then
01:38sometimes we go out and then we buy snacks macam kropo and all that for work kan and we share
01:44other than that i have also subscriptions okay and you and you're gonna think that i'm crazy
01:52but i do have a few so i subscribe to netflix disney plus okay um prime hbo max yeah that's for
02:03movies that's just for movies and then i also have music um apps like spotify and apple music i have
02:10all of okay yeah you don't have youtube premium i don't that's my favorite one oh really
02:15really why is she also really i use spotify and apple music you don't have the best one my goodness
02:23okay anyway that's already bad let's go on yeah okay and then as you know i have a car right yeah
02:30but sometimes when i malas na drive or cari parking i also use grab yeah so all of these things i don't
02:37really need lah kan yep but it makes i feel like it's making it easier for me but i feel like also
02:47i can cut down on some things to like save money kan yep that's the problem that you're facing that's
02:54the problem i'm facing i i went through this before a lot i don't think it's an issue for us to
02:58have subscriptions lah obviously i mean this podcast is talking about money how we can be more
03:03responsible yes be more responsible that's that's the thing that i'm here for today lah like is it
03:08yeah but i wouldn't say you should cut down on everything okay but anyway i think the gist of
03:14it is basically you're spending a small small item small small item and then it adds up and it adds up
03:18exactly so i think a lot of people also tend to fall for the same thing so maybe they are a bit more
03:25well-versed in personal finance so they don't buy expensive things they don't buy like you know the
03:29latest cars the latest iphone all the time a lot of people because they are a bit more they
03:34understand personal finances so they don't buy these big ticket items but then they go and buy
03:38these small small things coffee exactly i spend 15 ringgit a cup that's so expensive yeah imagine if
03:45i buy dua kali sehari it's 30 ringgit a day yeah oh my god a week that's 150 bucks that's the office
03:5030 times five right 150 bucks a month 600 just for coffee that's more than your food budget your food
03:56budget is 100 bucks a week that's crazy okay but yeah i think that's what a lot of people tend to
04:02fall for so they buy small small small items because it seems cheap right but once it adds up
04:08it becomes a lot less yes it is a lot so that's what i realized too back then so i also had a phase
04:13i think maybe two years ago where i thought how come i'm spending so much money every month i thought i
04:18don't buy a lot of stuff right and then i actually tracked all my expenses and i found out that i was
04:22subscribing to a lot of things as well uh i also had disney plus netflix and i have some gaming
04:27subscriptions that i had back then then when i went through it i realized like some of them i
04:32didn't even use for like a few months so i just cut it out la i think this is what people need to be
04:36careful of as well it's not just the big ticket items because the small small ones it can really
04:41add up and cost you a lot of money every single month as well subscriptions so people in my situation
04:46how do you feel like myself they can manage or like for me if i buy coffee every day how can i
04:56you know find an alternative okay yeah so obviously there is the route where you go to the extreme you
05:05don't buy any coffee anymore you don't buy snacks anymore and then subscription wise you just watch
05:11everything that's free on youtube tiktok whatever it is but obviously that's not realistic lah right
05:15um so you just need to set yourself a budget how much your budget allows you to spend these kind
05:22of things entertainment leisure and stuff and then you break it down into um what you can afford then
05:28so for example for me i used to buy coffee a lot as well do you guys have free coffee in the office
05:31we do but you don't you don't want it it's not that fun right i mean
05:34so sometimes if i want something different we go down yeah i do this in the office as well my office
05:41is free coffee but i also buy sometimes yes i feel like yes it's nicer you know barista giving
05:46me a cup but what i've done is so instead of buying it every day my coffee is a bit cheaper lah 10 bucks
05:52um but i still don't want to spend 50 bucks a week just on coffee so i set myself a budget of 30 bucks a
05:58week that's for me so that means i can buy coffee three times a week so i'll just budget it accordingly
06:02and i will use it wisely every monday i'll definitely buy coffee because monday i just woke up so i'll
06:07definitely get it then but if tuesday i want to buy again i'll be thinking if i buy it on tuesday
06:11they only have one more for the rest of the week yeah so i manage it in that way lah and it's similar
06:16to your subscriptions you know limit it depending on your budget if you say 100 a month then just
06:21decide which one is best so the budget yeah so cut out the ones that you don't use a lot i don't
06:26know this one's personal preference thing yep yep you definitely need to cut because um you need to
06:30make some space for youtube premium i think that was super youtube place sponsor um to start this
06:39change can we need to set like a habit and how do you you know biasa can yourself to you know be
06:48disciplined to manage to track your expenses like is there any easy ways for people who have never
06:58track their expenses or know how to manage your finances can start thoroughs yeah uh honestly it's
07:06super hard uh to answer that question i mean because i think a lot of these things are just
07:12discipline right you just have to do it uh so for me the motivation behind me doing all these things
07:18is just my extreme passion for not being broke okay i think a lot of people are the same lah you just
07:24need to realize what financial situation you're in i think a lot of people uh they get their salary
07:29they spend their entire salary they think everything is fine but one day when there's an
07:33emergency or one day in the future when you start to buy a house they realize they don't have
07:36enough money so i think you need to really look in the mirror like look at yourself right and then
07:41look at your bank account and then think for yourself like is this where i'm supposed to be
07:45is this where i should be considering how long i've been working my salary and stuff like
07:49that and if you're not on track then it's really just all about discipline it's like setting a bigger
07:53goal lah yeah yeah yeah yeah so you need to like have maybe i really want to summon belajar for
07:59example because i do i do actually yes i want to i want to continue my master's yeah so it sounds big
08:06to me yeah yeah to save up kan then i'll but then because of you know my little little expenses
08:12i buy coffee so i'm like ah tak boleh lah nak save up this month for that so i feel like setting a
08:19bigger goal would probably help it will definitely help i think one of the main things in personal
08:26finance a lot of people ask you know what's the point of saving you know i i don't see a need for
08:31saving right especially if you don't have dependents right you don't have kids you don't have parents
08:35to support anything it feels like you're completely free so you need to set a goal like for you you can
08:40say it's your master's for other people it can just be very general it can just be like let's say
08:43you don't have anything that you're working towards um you can just say oh i want to hit a hundred
08:47thousand ringgit in savings for example you need to have that in mind so for you like you want to
08:53save towards being able to pay for your master's right yeah and then you can slowly break it down
08:56in terms of okay if i just cut out let's say i want to save 300 ringgit a month let's say 300 ringgit
09:02i want to save and put it towards my education fund right my education sinking no grabs yeah then then you can
09:07look at your expenses and figure out where you can cut lah i think food you definitely can't cut
09:11hundred ringgit a week is really so low but like from coffee right you can definitely cut that down
09:15from subscriptions from all the six that you have if you cut down a few that's definitely like at least
09:2150 ringgit already a month you can put towards your education fund so these are things that you can do
09:25have that goal in mind if you really want to pursue it then these are sacrifices that you're going to make
09:30i thought my food was already crazy 100 ringgit a week that's 400 a month i rasa macam banyak je
09:36i think that's right this is why because i need to pay for my subscription i hope i'm not the one
09:41that's out of touch with reality but 400 a month is quite low really okay i can up sikit lah
09:46okay i mean okay i'll cut my subscription so that was added to my food budget my savings completely
09:54then master's tak amit juga next week you come like i need to cut my food budget how do i do that
10:00okay so we have a few story submissions for you okay okay this one is like me okay every weekday
10:08i'd grab my eight ringgit morning coffee without thinking twice and sometimes another cup in the
10:13afternoon as a pick me up add in the occasional bubble tea and it felt harmless just little treats to get
10:20me through the day then one month i checked my bank statement and nearly fell off my chair almost
10:25500 ringgit gone just on coffee that was more than my car installment the shop made me rethink everything
10:32now i make coffee at home most days and i put the savings into my travel fund instead of draining my
10:37wallet yep so the question is how can you balance enjoying little luxuries like coffees without letting
10:45them quietly drain your budget yeah so i think this one is like i said earlier if you set a limit for
10:50yourself so instead of buying it every day because we won't really keep track you know like by the time
10:56it's friday i buy my coffee i don't really remember how many times i bought a coffee or bubble tea or
11:01whatever it is yeah so i think you need to set a limit for yourself um three times a week three times a
11:06week two times a week yeah so you should do things like that and i think for this person is very good as
11:09well so it's a target of instead of buying coffee i'm putting into a holiday fund which i think is
11:15perfect because it's something that redirecting that money into like a bigger goal with somebody
11:21right and it's fun lah at least holidays right if you're thinking about saving for retirement it
11:26can feel like oh so far yeah and and i don't know if you've seen but there are comparisons in the
11:33personal finance space where they say if you buy a 10 ringgit coffee uh if you invested a 10 ringgit
11:38instead by the time you're 60 it will be like 5 000 or whatever it is i've seen it yeah yeah yeah i think
11:43honestly it's a bit ridiculous i think it's not that your retirement is going to be you know
11:49problematic just because you buy too much coffee i don't think that is like the real problem here
11:54but of course if you then spend too much every single day without tracking it then it can be an
11:58issue in your monthly cash flow yeah so you just have to be a little bit more responsible when you
12:04spend track it limit yourself limit yourself and then set a goal that you know something that you
12:09really want correct okay so instead of coffee i get to go to bali okay that's a good that's a good
12:14trade-off right yeah okay the next question is also the same same as me it's about subscriptions
12:20are they both you like i just split okay so this one they said it started with one subscription
12:29only 15 ringgit okay so why not kan yeah then another then another and then another yeah so before long
12:37i was paying for movies music storage and even a fitness app i never opened each one felt cheap
12:45until i realized i was losing nearly a hundred ringgit a month on things i barely use yeah that's over a
12:51thousand a year gone without me noticing i finally canceled half of them and kept only what i truly use
12:56now instead of paying for apps i forget about i put that money into my emergency fund a subscription to
13:02my future well the question is how do you decide which subscriptions are worth keeping and which
13:08ones are quietly draining your money i think this one is like completely up to individual right yeah
13:13for you netflix might be worth it maybe for me it's not worth it you and the fitness app that she just
13:17said yeah i buy storage as well which is storage now i buy storage people will say like oh icloud is
13:22such a waste of money but i don't know i feel like i need i mean for some people like content creators
13:26they need that yeah okay so obviously for things that are good for you then it's worth it lah whether
13:33it's a meditation app or some productivity app if it's worth it to you then by all means just go for
13:39it but i think this one is exactly like we were talking about lah people just subscribe small
13:43amounts and then you don't realize yeah so i think one thing that you can do i'm talking to myself here
13:48as well is maybe every three or six months if you don't want to track your expenses every month
13:52every three to six months just list down all your monthly subscriptions and then just do a review of
13:58it and then cut out oh i'd be scared yeah honestly honestly i feel like monthly subscriptions are the
14:02real killer because first of all you're gonna pay every month it's not like i buy one off and then
14:07it's done right it's every single month they'll charge you and then we don't ever remember yeah it
14:12will last for as long as um we don't remember yeah i know people who sign up for gyms you know new
14:18year's resolution january and then they go once and then they never go again but they still pay and
14:23i think it's really a waste of money lah i feel like it depends on you can if you're more to like
14:28towards health then maybe the fitness app would help you for me i like entertainment so maybe too much
14:35but too much kind of fight yeah i need to i need to go through and see which one i use the most
14:41yeah and then the one that i use i rarely use i feel like i should unsubscribe sadly
14:47why is it sad you sadly i mean what if sub tiba tiba i don't think about the lion king i don't have
14:53the t plus anymore you just subscribe back to it it's not an issue it's not like it's not like they're
14:58like oh if you unsubscribe you can never join us back again so bad and i think sometimes when you
15:03cancel a subscription i've had it before and then they will like try to save a customer and be like
15:07hey take this deal 50% off i'm like oh sure but the message is send you lah dekat email kan
15:12we miss you already so i guess all in all small subscriptions small purchases at the time when
15:21you buy it it feels like nothing right 10 15 ringgit i mean i didn't buy iphone so what's the coffee
15:25right it feels small but over time it can really add up um you guys need to track your expenses or
15:31with your subscriptions like i said every three to six months do a review cut out the ones that you
15:34don't need i'm not saying cut out everything because i know you know everyone still needs to
15:38spend money just limit yourself hey all right nice talking to you aisha hope you guys enjoyed this
15:44episode of the money goal see you in the next one
