We’ve all had that “right person, wrong time” moment — the one who lingers in your mind, the one you almost sent a 3AM text to but (thankfully or not?) didn’t.

In this special episode of Why Won’t You Love Me?, Yasmin is joined by Henry Moodie, who opens up about navigating the bittersweet reality of love and timing that just doesn't line up.

His latest single, sunday morning, is out EVERYWHERE now — and his album mood swings drops on August 24th. #SYOKPodcast #WhyWontYouLoveMe

00:00I mean drunk text is also about that like it was me one night nearly sending this text basically confessing how I felt
00:07it's honestly about just like not having the confidence to to say what you actually want to say right
00:12it's so scary to be vulnerable and it's scary to confess especially when you don't know the other person's feelings
00:17you were supposed to text or you did you end up texting no you didn't
00:22no the person it's about still has no idea oh my god literally no idea yeah that rejection
00:28can really hurt yeah are you feeling it now coming back I'm feeling it I'm like transporting
00:35myself back to the drunk text Henry
00:36hello hello hello and welcome back to an episode of why won't you love me and on
00:51today's episode on today's episode we've got another super special guest international singer
01:00I actually don't do many international singers because like I get a bit nervous so this is crazy
01:07that I'm able to introduce Henry Moody hello hi I'm honored to have you here thank you so much for
01:15coming I really appreciate it I'm ready to to get into it so thank you yeah no I'm happy to I mean
01:21I'm happy I'm excited to get into it as well and like we were literally like talking prior to
01:27to starting the recording like I'm hoping to trauma bond with you yeah um after this um but you've been
01:34to Malaysia yeah why is it before this I think this is my fourth time now it's your fourth time
01:39this year which is crazy but I always am so happy to come back because yeah like what's your like
01:46favorite part of Malaysia do you have like a favorite part oh I've only ever been to Kuala Lumpur
01:51right yeah I actually would be really interested at one point to go to like a different place
01:56yeah yeah that would be really fun but I love Kuala Lumpur um I'm trying to think we've done so many
02:01fun things here we went to Batu Caves when we first came right right how were the monkeys how were the
02:06steps yeah a lot I was sweating yeah it was hot yeah so basically on this show I invite people on
02:16um and since you're an artist um I basically pick three songs from your entire discography so I'm not
02:23talking about like just the past six months so your entire discography discography from start to end
02:28um and we'll pick those songs apart yeah are you down amazing amazing okay so for the first um song
02:38obviously I chose drunk text um yeah I know it's a bit cliche there were tons of other songs I wanted
02:46to get into but I I gotta start with this one I have to I felt like yeah this is also another thing
02:53that I do I feel like it's so strange I I give my interpretation of the song to the artist if you
03:00think I've gotten it wrong okay please let me know please correct me you know music is so subjective
03:05so it's interesting to hear like different people's interpretations all right well hopefully hopefully
03:11I've interpreted it somewhat correctly but to me I feel I felt like this song just captures the
03:18longing for someone who doesn't know how you feel yeah spot on yeah is that it in one sentence that is
03:25it perfect well I guess my first question then is have you ever held back saying how you truly felt
03:32about someone and what stopped you yeah a hundred percent I mean drunk text is also about that like
03:38it was me one night nearly sending this text basically confessing how I felt and then I deleted it that
03:45night and the next morning I like sat down at my piano and I wrote the song like then so um yeah I
03:53feel like it really has captured the feeling I wanted to get as well especially like because I wrote that
03:58song when I was like 18 right and I feel like oh okay right right a few years and at that age I feel
04:06like I was like out like partying way more than I am now and yeah I feel like you know the phrase that
04:12like drunk words are sober thoughts right yeah yeah so I feel like I constantly was having these like
04:16moments where I was like feeling really strongly about things and then kind of like keeping it in
04:23but like when you get drunk it kind of like comes out more so the songs try to capture that a little
04:28bit no I feel you on that I mean it doesn't even need to it's it's honestly about just like not having
04:34the confidence to to say what you actually want to say right because like yeah it's literally all
04:39about confidence because on the flip side of that getting rejected is like so painful and you just
04:47don't want to do that like I remember um like back when obviously this is like back in school I wouldn't
04:54talk about any of my rejections like in the past like five years but back in school um like I remember
05:00I did like I confessed I confessed to someone I literally I wrote a letter to be fair I was like 10
05:07years old but I did I wrote a letter and then I left it at this guy's locker and how did it go
05:14well like not well obviously like he mucked me off right like we were 10 years old he literally I saw
05:21him I remember like I like um where was I was like at the end of like the corridor and then I saw him
05:27like take the piece of paper out of the locker and I saw I literally saw him read it and I was like
05:34oh my god what's he gonna do he literally folded it back and put it back into his locker and I didn't
05:42see it exactly yeah I think it's so it's scary it's so scary and like after that I felt like oh my god
05:50like I can't like I just can't do it like I can't do that anymore like I don't want to confess to
05:55anyone anymore that like you know I have feelings for them or I have like a little crush on them and
05:59stuff like that because like the rejection stayed with me you know I need to write a song about that
06:04I can hear a hit song on its way you can write that for me no but it's true like that stick like
06:10even when you're 10 something like that can stick with you for the rest of your life um and I feel
06:14like a lot of people yeah it's so scary to be vulnerable and it's scary to confess especially when
06:20you don't know the other person's feelings like that one that's what John text is about is I was
06:25really unsure what this person felt so I was always just kind of like hiding these emotions and then it
06:31builds up and builds builds builds and then I guess I wrote a song about it it was like my way of like
06:37getting it out but it was a great song and it did very well I'm grateful it happened honestly thank you
06:42so much to the person who was on the exactly so the person you were supposed to you so you were
06:48supposed to text or you did you end up texting no you didn't no the person it's about still has no
06:54idea oh my god literally no idea yeah and then I ended up going on and writing another song called
06:59indigo about the same person so the the storyline is it's an evolving thing spoiler alert we are going
07:05to be talking about indigo but we'll leave that till later um but essentially I guess there's an ache
07:09in in having a crush or like loving someone silently right what do you think hurts more
07:15loving someone who doesn't know it or confessing and losing them
07:18this is both yeah both um so I think confessing and losing it because that fear that rejection
07:29can really hurt yeah like are you feeling it now coming back I'm feeling it I've like
07:36transported myself back to the drunk text Henry um but I say that and I've never I haven't done it
07:43yet but maybe like confessing it actually releases that anxiety you've built up even if they reject
07:48it at least you've got it out of your system you can move on do you know what I mean so maybe that
07:53is better I don't know but both of them are hard positions to be in but it's part of life you know
07:59yeah no absolutely I mean going back to my traumatic experience I can't lie like I I did feel
08:05some sort of relief um yes it was a bit weird after but like at least I got it out I stayed true
08:13to myself and I just did what I needed to do and obviously I was thinking about it like you said like
08:19there's that anxiety of like okay okay I'm gonna do it I'm gonna do it and then you do it and then
08:24it's sort of like over and done with and then after that yeah it was a bit weird but at least
08:30I did it right at least I said my said my piece at least you were honest yeah the reason why I wanted
08:37to come clean and like admit that I liked this person when I was 10 years old was because I wanted
08:44to not because I was hoping for like an answer or hoping for him to like reciprocate it I wanted I did
08:51it because I wanted to do it that's a good place to do it from yeah and like did did you guys ever
08:55like speak as friends afterwards yeah yeah yeah I mean like yeah it was a bit it was like awkward
09:01like for a little bit but then after a while I guess I mean we were 10 it's not that deep um we were
09:0710 but you feel things deeply at 10 yes that's true actually you know what I take them back yeah
09:1210 year old me was I was in my field yeah I was in my field as well I mean that's why I wrote the
09:16letter I mean right now romance is dead you think anyone's getting a letter right now
09:20no you know oddly romance is dead it's so dead in our generation yeah I think we're in the same
09:27generation you are yeah gen z yeah I'm I'm on the cusp um all righty okay well that's it for drunk text
09:35um and we're gonna move on to your second song which is something I chose okay so the songs that I
09:42choose I choose them because like I can relate to them and this is probably out of the three songs
09:48the song that like hit me I guess the most um it's right person wrong time oh gosh I don't even
09:58know where to begin like I feel like everybody has a right person wrong time yeah right and I felt like
10:07this particular song explores the idea that timing not love can ruin something real do you believe
10:14timing is everything or can true love wait whatever that means that's a good question a lot of people
10:19bought this up when I actually put out the song yeah it's difficult to know what is true in that
10:26situation um but the person I wrote right person wrong time about is like an like an old kind of
10:31like it's a very like nostalgic song because I remember it was like last it was last summer I wrote
10:36this song I was sitting and thinking about this one person from a few years ago that I just felt like
10:42we could have tried harder and like it could have been something but the timing of it like this
10:46person ended up moving away to a completely different country and I ended up like traveling a lot
10:50I feel like true true love will always work out whether it like maybe not at the time that like
10:58you first see each other but some point in the future I feel like your paths will cross yeah and you
11:05will do anything for someone you love so I feel like um even if like you are in completely different
11:12phases of life like that is your person you will know and that's your instinct um but yeah that
11:18song's like that song's one of my favorites as well oh yeah every time I listen to it like
11:22it really just brings me back to that like weird nostalgic feeling that I like I don't know like
11:29I always love being like very sentimental I love like yearning on things so um some people call it
11:38torture literally but no regular someone time is such a weird one because I feel like I still
11:44I'm like working through that situation still and I'm like figuring out whether it actually is the
11:48love of my life or I was just like yearning and being nostalgic and blowing it off in my head
11:53I started romanticizing it loads but um we're actually still friends this person it's about and
11:58seeing this person this august so right keep you updated on all right yeah keep me updated do you
12:03feel like it was the one that got away and I feel like everyone's got one person that's got away
12:07the one that got away maybe not everyone hope so hopefully some people they have that person in
12:10their life a lot of people if that person is kind of gone yeah was there yeah it's really sad
12:17it is yeah no I mean I I I do have my my right person wrong time as well like how you relate to the
12:26song yeah sorry no I mean very similar to you um he he's someone that was like in and out in and out
12:36in and out and like we never actually got together um it was going on for about like I want to say like
12:4210 years um when I wasn't in a relationship he wasn't one whenever he wasn't in a relationship
12:48I wasn't one so like the timing just never worked out but I think like five years ago or something
12:57like that um the time was finally right but everything felt wrong interesting because like
13:06it was maybe this pressure exactly like I felt like you know there was this huge like
13:11build up so that when so that when it finally arrived it just didn't feel right anymore because
13:18it was like 10 years of like that same thing like you were saying right that yearning and then for it
13:22to finally happen I was like oh it's it's not actually like what I thought it would be and after that
13:29I literally remember having a conversation with him being like you know what I think I think our time
13:35has passed yeah he challenged your life at different times and serve like purposes at that time it's
13:44really strange like I feel like some people serve some people come in for a certain chapter
13:49and then it doesn't quite work out for the next chapter but it doesn't yeah the bit that they were
13:54in in the first place wasn't special like but that's interesting that you've that you got to the
13:58point of being that really like being ready to go and it not working out and yeah it probably is like
14:04maybe that pressure you put on it or your time yeah it just passed yeah no definitely like yeah
14:09I think I hope it doesn't I hope it doesn't but like like you said there's something like
14:15nostalgic and like sentimental because like even talking to you now about it because like
14:20this is not someone this is not someone I think of regularly this is not something I think of
14:25regularly at all because it happened like ages ago now maybe you guys meeting and realizing that
14:30actually was the closure you need yeah absolutely but even like thinking about it now like literally
14:35talking to you and thinking about it like it's I don't know I don't know would you call it like a
14:41shame is it a shame that it didn't happen or like you just sort of look at it and you kind of feel
14:48like well that was just like a chapter I mean you guys you kind of spoke a little bit about that
14:53like it's just a chapter yeah it's a strange nostalgia is such a strange feeling and yeah it's
15:02it's always hard to know but the one thing I always trust like whatever your gut instinct says
15:08in relationships I think that never really changes so whatever your gut is telling you when you think
15:14about it I think is the truth and I guess at the same time whatever is meant for you will not pass
15:22you by exactly like you yeah if that's your person it just it just will happen because
15:29like I just feel like that's the way the universe works like yeah no absolutely they look late into
15:35your life at the time they come and if it's our person they stick if not it's the time yeah and if
15:40they don't stick it's I mean it's a lesson it's something to learn from right but yeah yeah you
15:46know what it's it's a strange place to be being single but knowing it you easily could there was
15:54someone there was someone person and especially when it didn't end with that person like doing
15:59something bad yeah yeah or something because if that happened obviously it's terrible but at least
16:04it could be like you're like yeah like I hate you do you know what I mean um but when it just drifts
16:10away that's a strange thing because you do think like oh maybe this is the right person because
16:16they clearly probably had a similar feeling as well like they didn't so do you know what I mean it's
16:20like yeah and that's I wrote a song called closure about that situation yes yes yes yes but
16:25yeah no I felt like this was like a song that I could really really relate to um just like the
16:30feelings and like the emotions I felt while listening to it I was like oh this like really
16:34like takes me back and makes me think about all those things so um there's also something about
16:40like teen romance like all the like things that like situations I had when I was like in my teens
16:45they're just like there's something about them that is like very like like cinematic and romantic
16:49yeah because I mean at the time obviously we look at we look back on it now maybe now that we're a bit
16:55older and we're like oh my god like that's so like that was crazy but at the time that was what was
16:59real right and I feel like things now are so serious back then it was so like I don't know
17:05light-hearted and I said maybe I just had less like pressures of like I need to get into a relationship
17:10because you're younger whereas now I feel like I have like I'm looking for something a bit more
17:15serious yeah and I'm just being a bit too they're too busy yeah you're like married to your work
17:19literally um so yeah I do miss something about like that feeling of like teen relationships like back
17:26then there was something like exciting about it all yeah I'm so new yeah and I guess that's where
17:31the nostalgia comes in right like because I mean yeah things are different now right um you're like
17:36married to your work and like you're like all over the globe you know married to honestly my for you
17:41page like I need to get off my voice yes I know I completely understand do scrolling is literally the
17:46worst but um all righty and I guess we're moving on to a song that we literally just touched on
17:54earlier which is indigo so it's a recent one yes that's why I wanted to talk about it so indigo I
18:01guess floats in the space between love and loss where things feel unclear and slipping but not quite
18:08gone have you ever felt someone slowly slipping away from you but you weren't sure if it was just in
18:13your head wow these questions I love them um yes definitely um god there's nothing as bad as that
18:24feeling of just complete anxiety that someone isn't because you can't control how people think right
18:29yeah or just realizing you've just got to let that person have their feelings and you just can't
18:33control it um yeah indigo is about the drunk text person but from a more evolved point of view
18:39because I wrote drunk text when I was 18 but I wrote indigo a couple years later so I the situation
18:45has obviously changed and um but my inner feeling hadn't changed like I still feel the same yeah and
18:53even though drunk text has been out in the world like I still feel the same like yeah part of me
18:56thought maybe being out would be like closure but no no no still feel the same but you've changed you
19:04as a person you've changed I feel like indigo is a bit more of like me acknowledging that it's just
19:11not gonna happen and a bit more of me being like it's I don't know me looking at it from a different
19:17point of view to drunk text because in drunk text I still feel like I had a bit more hope that it was
19:21gonna work out whereas in indigo I think I recognize it it hadn't it isn't gonna work out but I still had
19:28those same feelings right right right yeah no the song captures that feel of like that feeling of
19:34still caring it's like drunk text in different font yeah no that's actually a really good way of
19:38putting it yeah absolutely but I guess um yeah no it's it's exactly that I mean that's what I got
19:45from the song as well it's basically a song that captures that you know you're you're still feeling
19:50what you're feeling but at the same time you sense like that the connection that you're having is
19:54stepping down already because like what can what can you do right in the first verse of indigo I'm
20:00like I heard that you fell in love so I guess I'm a little too late like the person that actually
20:03has now got a partner so whereas it when I had when I wrote drunk text was all up in the air
20:09right whereas with indigo there was more of like the chapter's closed but this is my final take on
20:14the situation right right um so I guess in a way like writing indigo was it like therapeutic in a
20:22sense like it was kind of like like you said right it's like a bit of closure right it must have been
20:27for you yeah songwriting is always like therapy for me yeah like even if I go back to the og days of
20:33writing songs like um I used to get like bullied in school and I feel like writing songs used to help
20:37me through that so yeah no indigo is definitely therapy um and it's that feeling of like being in
20:44love with someone that you're not actually with like you can still be in love with someone that's like
20:48yeah with someone else so you know it's not gonna work out with but um yeah we wrote that one I
20:54remember we wrote the chorus I'm trying to like bring myself back we wrote the chorus first we had
20:58a different first verse actually right okay similar with drunk text and then we ended up rewriting the
21:03first verse because it didn't feel like personal enough um and then we wrote I knew it needed a
21:09bridge so like a couple months later I wrote the the bridge to it and then once I'd written the
21:15bridge I was like the song is ready and then write it out right right right right yeah no I'm sure
21:20because you're a songwriter as well right like I'm sure because I like journaling so that's kind of
21:25like my form of writing I'm not writing songs but like I'm still writing on paper like I'm putting
21:31I guess I'm putting my thoughts to paper it's so important yeah journaling is pretty much and I guess
21:37songwriting is like that for you and like I mean I I totally understand sometimes okay so like my
21:44version of like you writing your bridge and all that is sometimes like you know if I'm not feeling
21:49something like that I'm journaling like I just literally just like cross it out or like whatever
21:54and then like oh write something else and sometimes like like I mean I've been journaling for ages so
22:00like looking back on it sometimes I'll be like oh my god that's like how I felt at the time that's
22:06crazy because I'm so far removed from I'm sure you feel that way about some of the songs that you've
22:11written right but like it's so important because if you didn't write that you probably would have
22:15never like gotten over it exactly kind of get it out yeah but yeah no there's so many songs to look
22:20back at and I'm like I'm gonna feel so differently but it captures that moment in time where you felt
22:25like that way absolutely absolutely all right well I mean we've picked apart three of your songs
22:31and right now we're actually gonna get into the quick fire like rapid section yeah and we're gonna
22:39just do a few questions so whatever comes to your mind first all righty are you ready
22:45best advice you've ever received I was thinking about this earlier and the only thing I can think
22:52of off the top of my head is be where you are otherwise you'll miss out on life it's just always
22:56my um it's my screensaver on my phone just to be present that's a good one that's a good one okay
23:01number two love at first sight real or just great songwriting material I don't know if like actually
23:06looking at someone and falling in love without even speaking and getting to know them is real
23:12because you probably just find them really attractive but like actually being in love with
23:15them as a person I feel like you have to actually get to know them for that so yeah I feel like maybe
23:19not real but I feel like you can meet someone and then like if you had a really good conversation
23:26with them then you can figure out that's like an indicator if you really are into them got you
23:31okay favorite album of all time melodrama by lord oh that's a good one oh that's a good one
23:38yeah that's a really really good one best movie you've seen recently best movie I've seen recently
23:45is I watched devil wears prada recently which I haven't seen for ages and the musicals out now on
23:54the west edge yeah to watch that my mom literally watched it recently when I was younger and I watched
23:58recently I was like this is just such a good movie so yeah all righty what's one song that always
24:03lifts your mood one song that always lifts my mood is oh it can be yours as well all good I'm not sure
24:12there's many of mine to be fair it's a lot of breakup songs um I always I love Lizzo okay she always
24:19lifts my mood um and labyrinth has a song called mount everest always lifts my mood yes the euphoria
24:27soundtrack is euphoria soundtrack amazing amazing amazing um the first concert you ever went to
24:33was justin bieber when I was in year two yeah with my best friend join that's right that's right he got
24:39tickets for his birthday and I was so honored to be his plus but he did turn up like an hour late but
24:44you know what it's justin bieber we'll take it we'll take whatever we can get says one word and I'll be
24:49like totally understand best breakup song of all time besides your own someone like you by Adele
24:55of course Bradley said the exact same thing there's another answer to that question yeah
24:59Adele national treasure all right wondering from your own songs that best defines your view on love
25:05I'm thinking something from indigo because that's like a lovey like yeah you've got a power that's
25:10larger than life I feel like if you're in love with someone you feel like they're like
25:13just like larger than life connection to them yeah right so yeah there you go lovely and that's it
25:19for the rapid fire round and um I guess before we cap things off do you have a message that you want
25:27to send to all your fans here in Malaysia obviously this episode's coming out after your show because
25:32Henry's got a show tomorrow evening um at ZEP so yeah I mean is there anything that you want to say
25:40to your fans I hope you like the show hope you had fun um and just thank you for getting me
25:49like changing my life and the reason I'm here is because of you guys so you really are
25:54like just the most supportive people thank you guys yeah on that note I guess that's it for this
26:02week's episode thank you so much Henry for coming on to my show and yeah I guess that's it for this
26:10episode of why won't she love me and we'll catch you guys on the next episode till then take care and
26:18stay safe see ya
