00:00I've been having a real bad smelly.
00:30So, I just went in the basement, opened the basement door, and there was a tire and what
00:36looks like it could be blood leaking from it.
00:42And I want the police to come here ASAP right now and look at them.
00:57So, back in 2018, I was a detective sergeant in the major case team with the Grand Rapids
01:09Police Department.
01:11My recollection of the 911 call was a downstairs resident of this house had called because
01:18of a foul odor coming from the basement.
01:23Our officers went to the house, and a patrol sergeant took the lead in a preliminary investigation.
01:29This was a shared basement, but the back door to the apartments, it's all open.
01:42There was very little down there.
01:45It's exposed, poured walls, a slab floor, wooden steps.
01:52This is a dark, dirty, dingy basement, low-lit.
01:59This tarp was essentially at the base of the stairs, so you could actually see it when
02:05you stepped inside the doorway.
02:08He unzipped the bag just enough, and with the use of his flashlight could see that there
02:22was human remains.
02:23There was a body inside the tarp.
02:28Initially, when the call came out as body in a tarp, we didn't know that it was going
02:33to be more heinous and more horrific than usual.
02:39I remember it was myself with the camera, our medical examiner opening it, and Detective
02:46Pearlie was right next to me.
02:52And as she unzipped the tarp, I saw where a shoulder and an arm should have been.
03:02And I could tell that it had been cut off.
03:05And so I had said out loud, there should be an arm there.
03:11And the medical examiner looked at me and said, there should be a head there.
03:16What we found was a nude female missing most of her legs and arms in her head.
03:24And now the investigation switches to where is the rest of her?
03:29And is the person responsible a resident?
03:38We had officers on scene that had surrounded the house.
03:42Preventing people from coming or going, preserving any evidence that might still be left there.
03:47At that point, I contacted the Michigan State Police and requested that cadaver dogs respond
03:53to our location so that they could use the dogs to try and locate the missing body parts.
04:01Once the cadaver dogs got there, they hit on two cardboard boxes on a secondary landing just
04:07above where we were, the closer landing to apartment two.
04:13And the dogs alerted to a scent of decomposing flesh in the boxes.
04:19And it was in one of those boxes that we did find her legs and arms.
04:25Where is the rest of her?
04:27And you're looking and you're realizing she's not here.
04:32Now you realize there's a lot more to this than we initially thought.
04:38I went and met with the lieutenant.
04:40And that's when he told me a little bit of the background about the missing person report
04:43out of Kalamazoo involving Ashley Young.
04:46That Ashley's mom had come into the headquarters on Friday requesting the department's assistance
04:52in locating her.
04:55Ashley worked at the bank.
05:07She worked at the call center.
05:09On Thursday, I figured she was at work, because she worked during the day.
05:14I kept trying to get a hold of her, kept calling her.
05:17She was 31, but Ashley calls back, Ashley texts.
05:23There is not a time that that child, unless her phone died because she was on it for too
05:28long, that she's not on her phone.
05:32Okay, so let's talk about my morning and how amazing, and I promise this is none of this
05:38is exaggerated or made up.
05:40She was very expressive.
05:42And she'd have to tell you that story from beginning to end, and you didn't interrupt.
05:47Because if you interrupted, she had to start over.
05:50So you just let her go.
05:52He put a hickey on a high.
05:53She'd always be sending you a bunch of different Snapchat videos.
05:59I always do.
06:00If multiple text messages came through in one go, it was Ashley.
06:03I didn't even need to look.
06:05She loved her phone.
06:06She couldn't leave without it.
06:07Or what if it's mold, and I don't want to get sick.
06:09Do you see them?
06:10She was the most bubbly, happy person.
06:14If you would be talking to her, and this could be like six o'clock in the morning, she will
06:19sing the answer back to you.
06:21Good morning, beautiful.
06:24I met Christine when Ashley was 15.
06:29I had two boys.
06:31Having just her mom to herself for the longest time, it was hard for me to be like the step-mom.
06:36You know, my mom's not gay, and I don't want to listen to you.
06:41I want my mom to be with a guy and have a step-dad, not a step-mom.
06:48But the more we were together, Chris and I, the more she accepted it.
06:53And we had our separate bond from her mom and I's relationship, too.
06:58She had a very magical world.
07:00Rainbows, sunshines, butterflies.
07:02That's what she would say.
07:03And we, I kept always telling her, it's not full of rainbows and sunshines.
07:07And she'd say, yeah, I didn't hear that.
07:09She'd gotten a promise ring from Moody, but she wanted to make sure that he was the one.
07:26Ashley was like, Mom, I want to live on my own for a while.
07:32I want to, you know, see what it's like.
07:35He was from Saudi Arabia, and I think he would have had to go back to Saudi Arabia.
07:41And I think Ashley was worried about that.
07:43They had been together for about six years, I believe.
07:46She lived with him for a long time.
07:49That Moody's visa was going to be up, so he was going to be going back home.
07:52So, she was struggling with that.
07:54I think she wanted her own apartment, just to say that she was on her own.
08:01Thursday, I was supposed to meet Ashley, because we were going to go sign on an apartment for
08:19her, and I text her, and then I called her, and she wasn't answering, and I'm like, okay.
08:34It's during the day that she'll call me on her break, didn't hear from her.
08:40I completely thought Ashley was with friends, hanging out.
08:44The last time I heard from her was Wednesday night, it was a voice message.
08:49Ashley would normally tell me where she was, and I'm like, who could she have been with?
09:13Who could she have been going to see?
09:18I called Moody to see if he had heard from her.
09:21He was like, I haven't talked to her.
09:23And then he's like, why?
09:24And I'm like, because I can't find her.
09:27She's not responding.
09:28He goes, I'll try and call her and see if I can't get a hold of her.
09:35I didn't hear from Moody again.
09:38He was going to college.
09:40So I assumed, you know, it was Friday, so he's probably going to class.
09:52I went on Facebook.
09:54I put out a message with Ashley's picture asking if anybody's seen her.
10:01My niece sent me a message and asked me if it was a joke.
10:05And I'm like, no, this isn't a joke.
10:09This is real.
10:10Have you heard from her?
10:11Do you know where she is?
10:13And nobody knew.
10:16Nobody knew.
10:17That's when I started calling her friends.
10:21There were so many people that I called, and nobody had heard from her.
10:28At first, I think I wanted to believe that maybe her phone died or she just kind of got
10:34carried away, you know, the night before.
10:36Ashley always had crazy things happening to her, so for her phone to die, it would not
10:41be shocking.
10:42But I knew Ashley went out that night.
10:44I didn't really want to put it out there until I talked to her first.
10:49So I just didn't say anything.
10:55And then I heard that Christine was worried and that Ashley didn't show up for signing
10:59the lease for her apartment.
11:01And that's when I really knew that something was wrong.
11:04But I think that as her best friend, I did know certain things that Christine and Dana
11:09didn't know and that they needed to know.
11:19her boyfriend Moody had reached out and asked me if I had heard from her where she was.
11:32But I didn't really, I didn't respond to him just because I knew they were going through
11:36things and I knew they were breaking up.
11:38So I guess, you know, if she wanted him to know where she was, she would have told him.
11:43It was like two weeks before all of this.
11:49She picked me up and took me to Detroit to go see an artist that I liked.
11:53We went to a concert and we spent the whole weekend together.
11:56We didn't get a lot of time together sometimes with work schedules and her living, you know,
12:01in Kalamazoo.
12:02But that weekend was pretty magical.
12:04When we were in Detroit, Ashley kind of opened up to me about the struggles in her relationship
12:10and the fact that it was ending with her boyfriend at the time.
12:15Being with somebody other than Moody was just kind of shocking to her.
12:19But she opened up and was talking about how Jared had reached out to her and that he wanted
12:23to hang out.
12:24They hadn't seen each other before this for like six years.
12:29Ashley first met Jared in 2009.
12:33I've known Jared since he was a kid.
12:36He was my cousin's best friend.
12:38And they ended up becoming friends.
12:40He was close with us.
12:42He snuggled in the bed with us.
12:45She had a little crush on him in a sense, like, oh, he's cute.
12:48She always had a lot of people kind of just judging her before they ever really got to
12:53meet her.
12:54People would just judge her based off of what they saw and he didn't treat her different
12:58and he made her feel good, you know.
13:00So I think that naturally she had some sort of an attraction to him.
13:05But now she was going to be kind of single.
13:09I knew Jared and Ashley had plans to hang out in Grand Rapids that night.
13:21She texted me a few times before she went out and then she ended up calling me.
13:26I want to say it was like around 1.30 and we talked on the phone for quite a while.
13:31She just seemed like her happy-go-lucky self.
13:34There was no signs that anything was wrong.
13:38And that's when I was like, well, where's Jared?
13:41And she said he was inside the bar.
13:43He was sitting in the booth with two of his friends, that there were two people with him.
13:51And then I want to say it was the next day, one of her other friends contacted me and asked
13:56if I knew where Ashley was and that everybody was really worried and that Christine and everybody
14:01thought she was missing.
14:04I remember telling them about the phone call we had at the bar that night.
14:08I'm like, okay, who were the other people there?
14:12There were people there who'd seen her.
14:15Sam told me that Ashley was with Jared.
14:17And I'm like, what's his phone number?
14:20You know, because I figured I'd call him.
14:22Maybe he knew.
14:23Maybe he had seen her.
14:24And so I called Eva.
14:27When Ashley's mom first told me she was last with Jared, my initial response was, oh,
14:33thank God.
14:34He loves her.
14:36I told her mother, his parents are good people.
14:39His dad is a police officer.
14:41He would never let anything happen to her.
14:44I sent him a message Friday morning.
14:48Muffin, do you have Ashley?
14:51Let me know because she's supposed to meet her mom and her mom has me scared.
14:55I love you.
14:57And he didn't respond.
15:01So I was like, I will find you.
15:04You both think you're funny.
15:05I will pull up.
15:07Like, don't play with me.
15:17It was one o'clock in the afternoon on Friday is when I spoke with Jared.
15:24He said that they were at the pub, they were at Mulligan's, and he was telling me that Demetrius
15:30was a friend of his, and that Ashley was over at Demetrius's, and then she was going home, and he gave me his number, and he told me, he goes, you can call right there right now.
15:45She's there, you can talk to her, so I called.
15:49I told him who I was, and I said, do you know who Jared is?
15:53He goes, yeah, Jared's a friend of mine.
15:55I said, okay.
15:56Jared told me my daughter's with you.
15:58Who's your daughter?
15:59I said, Ashley.
16:00Ashley Young.
16:01He goes, there's nobody here but me.
16:03I said, thank you.
16:04Hung up.
16:05These are all lies.
16:07You feel completely lost.
16:08Everything is out of control, knowing that something is wrong, and you know somebody knows, but you just don't know who.
16:22I was like, you know, we need to go to Grand Rapids.
16:32The police in Grand Rapids, they just seemed like they didn't care very much about finding Ashley.
16:37Well, you gotta go to Kalamazoo.
16:40You have to call where they're from and file a missing persons report.
16:47We drove to Kalamazoo.
16:49They took the information, and that was about it.
16:55The police departments don't take it seriously.
16:58They figure they're 31.
17:00They don't want to be found.
17:03They're not really going to look for them.
17:09It was so frustrating.
17:11I just, I literally wanted to hurt someone.
17:18I wanted to scream.
17:23I wanted to just destroy everything in my past until I found my child.
17:30We put the flyers out.
17:45We were trying to find her car.
17:48We did the missing persons on Facebook.
17:51We had a picture of her and Jared because they were together, you know, so we had their last picture together.
17:57We knocked on Jared's door, and no one was there.
18:03Then I was like, we need to go to Mulligan's Pub.
18:07Because somebody, the manager's gotta know.
18:10They gotta have cameras.
18:11Somebody around there's gotta know something.
18:14When we went to Mulligan's Pub, we talked with the bartender and the night manager, and we were able to see that footage.
18:27We were able to see Ashley.
18:34The only time we saw Jared on them was when they were going between buildings.
18:42And when the bar was getting ready to close, he was outside.
18:46They were both there.
18:48They walked away together.
18:51And Ashley was Ashley.
18:53She's laughing.
18:54She's on her phone.
18:55And I looked at Dana and said, I want to pull her off.
18:58I want to take her home.
19:01I literally wanted to reach in there and just pull her right off that screen and take her home.
19:06That's what I wanted to do.
19:10You don't want to admit it to yourself, but you have it in the pit of your stomach that you're not going to see your child again.
19:25It was Sunday afternoon, December 2nd, 2018.
19:32Jared Chance and his father had come into the headquarters of the police department.
19:40I just came in just because I read on Facebook that the last person this person was with was me, so I was just concerned.
19:50But I came in to say that, like, here I am.
19:53I'm not hiding from you.
19:56They initially showed up to say, hey, we heard you wanted to talk to Jared or see Jared because Christine's looking for Ashley.
20:05The only thing that Jared said was, we don't know where Ashley is.
20:10My dad just told me, recommended me to just ask for the advice of attorney because I don't really know what the hell is going on, so.
20:19It's Sunday morning.
20:20There are no attorneys just roaming around the police stations, just ready to come on in and represent somebody.
20:28And they don't have any concrete information to even suggest that Ashley, at that point, was in any type of trouble, remotely any type of trouble.
20:39And then they were gone.
20:40The whole interaction lasted just a couple minutes and that was it.
20:46Neither one of them were answering their phones.
20:52And I'm like, okay, you both think you're funny.
20:56It's not going to be funny when I pull up and start pounding on the door, is it?
21:01So Sunday, I get to Jared's house just before 4 o'clock.
21:05There's no one there.
21:07And I'm like, okay, I'm looking around.
21:09I'm like, there's got to be something.
21:11She's maybe dropped a chip bag, a receipt, something.
21:14If I see anything, I know if it's hers.
21:17And I looked over at the porch and there was a trash can that had work boots sitting on top.
21:24And I'm like, oh, this is weird.
21:28So I was like, maybe I'll record it and send it to the family.
21:32I started recording and I lifted the boots up.
21:36And then there were nitrile gloves and plastic wrap and body wash and an ammonia bottle.
21:46And I pulled out this saw blade.
21:55And then the neighbors opened the door and she was like, well, you know, what's going on?
22:00What are you doing?
22:01And I was like, hey, you know, I'm looking for my friend.
22:05Have you seen her?
22:06And they were like, yeah, we don't know anything about that.
22:08All right.
22:09Well, I appreciate it.
22:10Thank you guys.
22:11Jared's neighbors immediately thinking that was weird, put two and two together and decided
22:16to investigate a smell in the basement.
22:23And he found what he described to be a tarp with blood coming from it.
22:29And I want the police to come here ASAP right now and look at it.
22:30All right.
22:31Putting it together that Jared did this to Ashley, none of it made sense.
22:34I don't see him being able to do something like this.
22:37My first words were straight out.
22:40Jared is a little bitch.
22:41He would not be able to handle that.
22:42I don't see him being able to do something like this.
22:43My first words were straight out.
22:44Jared is a little bitch.
22:45He would not be able to handle that.
22:46I don't see him being able to do something like this.
22:50Someone helped him and they ended up searching the parents house.
22:53Not much later.
22:55that Jared did this to Ashley none of it made sense I don't see him being able
23:02to do something like this my first words were straight out Jared is a little
23:08bitch he would not be able to handle killing someone I don't see it someone
23:14helped him and they ended up searching the parents house not much later
23:25Grand Rapids Police Department gets a 911 call and that's originating from an
23:35address on Franklin Street and downtown Grand Rapids and so that's really how the
23:42investigation begins there were verbal commands being been made to the house
23:51asking any any occupants to come out
23:56doesn't take long for officers to find out
24:18that the second story residence of that address is none other than Jared chance
24:26he was under arrest at that point more under suspicion or probable cause than any
24:32actual specific charge at that point I had asked two detectives to interview him
24:40down at headquarters I later learned that he'd requested an attorney and so
24:46nothing was learned from him I then had our forensic unit to start to process the
24:52house the first thing that caught my eye was the kitchen floor with a large brown
24:59stain there were a pair of pruners inside the bedroom closet and there was a six-inch
25:08fillet knife on a shelf in the living room there was standing water in the tub there was no shower
25:15curtain there was a pair of men's jeans on the floor and notice there was a brown stain brownish
25:23colored stain on the right knee of the jeans and those stains indicated positive for for blood
25:30police telling us that the body of a female was found near a home he over here still several
25:39questions it's unclear when that body was found who found that body and if there have been any arrests
25:45we came back to Jared's house and that's when we came up on the crime scene I thought there was like
25:54an accident I had no clue that anything had even happened I remember going to where there was an
26:02officer standing behind the tape and she wanted me to come down to the station so I went down the station
26:09and she pulled Dana and I back into an interview room and she goes what what did your daughter look like
26:23I'm like my daughter she has big beautiful eyes that's when she said there
26:34um there's no identifying parts I looked at her and I said
26:46you don't have her head
26:51but they couldn't verify that it was her they took me into an interrogation room
27:04and I had to do a demon test
27:12and all I kept thinking about was how beautiful her eyes were how beautiful she was
27:23we know that Christine has been looking for her daughter Ashley we have the torso of a white female in the basement
27:37and Jared is the one who was with her last and he lives right upstairs on one hand we're fairly
27:46certain that this is Ashley but we cannot confirm that this is Ashley her fingerprints are gone her hands
27:53are not there we can't do dental records we can't look at her face her head is unaccounted for so we had
28:02plenty of evidence but our suspect wasn't going to help us so we're using everything that we have to try
28:09and piece together how did she die how did this happen what really happened to her remains and was
28:16there anybody else with Jared detectives from Grand Rapids Police Department they interview Ashley's
28:23friends what we learned about the relationship between Jared and Ashley is that they were just
28:29kind of friends in the past but there was some type of falling out between the two in 2013 Ashley ended up
28:38moving with my cousin and one day Jared went there and he broke in and he stole a couple of items so
28:46they didn't talk for a while a couple of years Jared had somewhat of a substance abuse problem clearly had an
28:56alcohol problem then he claimed to have gotten off of the drugs which is when him and Ashley started
29:02talking again and being friends again she reunited with Jared just as her relationship with Moody was
29:09taking a break based on statements that have received they seem to be getting along fine how things went bad I don't know
29:21Grand Rapids Police confirmed what many already suspected the dismembered remains found at a southeast side home
29:33are that of Ashley Young the remains are sent to our medical examiner to perform an autopsy and there's
29:42no evidence to suggest an overdose she had nothing in her system and so you combine that with the
29:51dismemberment and the manner of death was deemed as homicide the cause of death undetermined because
30:00whatever killed Ashley occurred to her head we learned a saw and a knife was likely used to mutilate her body
30:11the attempts had been made to remove more of Ashley's legs
30:20there was very deep cuts made to certain areas that were clearly additional effort
30:30to go further with the dismembering it would have taken considerable effort to cut up a body in time
30:38we had phone records that put Jared around his parents house right about the time that we believe
30:47Ashley disappeared and would have been murdered so we wanted to talk to the parents at this point
30:53I knocked on the parents door James and Barbara Chance were at the house that night at that time I learned
31:02that it that Jared's dad was a former police officer but I remember the dad at one time saying he was glad he
31:10wasn't working this case and I said well why would you say that and I remember him saying because this is a tough
31:16case does he know more than what he's letting on why does somebody say that at that point
31:22during the execution of the search warrant at Jared's mom and dad's house there was a shower curtain
31:30recovered from the garage we found a particular note a reciprocating saw that was found underneath their
31:38couch in the living room the tip of the sauce still contained flesh and blood from Ashley's body uncased
31:48not in a bag just by itself underneath the family's couch on their hardwood floor from that the prosecutor's
31:55office issued criminal charges against James and Barbara Chance and that's when I interviewed the both of
32:01him I think there's more of the story and I think I think you know more and that's what you think I
32:08know you tell me I said well what she did and he said yeah anybody else was there yeah anybody else
32:17dear God what did I do
32:23at this point we're still missing Ashley's head her hands and her feet and we indeed found some
32:42remarkable evidence inside the parents house it was certainly suspicious what was your involvement
32:50you know how culpable are you in this thing
32:52when's the last time you spoke to Jared he called me and said he lost his job he said
33:05he was trying to kill himself trying to overdose himself he said you got to get over here right
33:12away mom please come and what day was that that was Saturday morning we had him in separate rooms
33:19but both James and Barbara agreed to continue without a lawyer present they both were very
33:26difficult to get a read on their statement is that they get a phone call from Jared saying
33:33what was me I may have lost my job come pick me up and so then they pick him up
33:39you go to his house right I gotta put stuff in the car I got some stuff did you even get out
33:45okay Mr. Chance got out he might have to help
33:49how did those boxes how'd that box get in the Honda in the first place
34:00and put it in there was just a plain cardboard box okay where did that come from
34:07they claim that they didn't know what was being loaded in the car and they go back home to Holland
34:24where Jared ends up spending the night
34:27when Sunday morning he drops the bombshell on you and he's crying he's crying he's sobbing
34:34he said there was an accident they had been drinking and they were playing with the gun she had the gun
34:40and it went off shot and she got shot in the face
34:44and he panicked he panicked he didn't know what to do
34:56he was really scared he said I didn't kill her mom it went off
35:01that's what he told you yeah because I said did you kill her he said no mom I would never kill anybody
35:08I would never kill anybody she was my friend
35:11they wouldn't admit that Jared killed her although ultimately they did admit
35:17that Jared had dismembered her
35:21did he tell you what he did after this
35:25cut off her feet
35:27feet and her hands and her head
35:29and then this was the big issue for us what did he do with them what did he say
35:36when I asked him and I said where are they he said I drove around with them
35:40I drove around and then I got rid of them
35:44put them in garbage or trash cans and stuff and I said where he didn't know
35:51I know you're trying to find this young lady's body parts and if I could help you I would
35:57but I don't know where they are
35:59so the story that he wanted us to believe is that a cop with over 20 years of experience
36:05found out that his son cut somebody up there's a whole bunch of boxes in the back of his Honda
36:10and he didn't go and look in them which was an absolute joke
36:15they knew exactly what their son had done
36:18they knew exactly what they had done to try to help him get away with it
36:23and I really believe that that little stunt at the PD was a calculated effort to give Jared
36:31more time to continue to dispose of Ashley's remains
36:36in the end after several hours we weren't able to get much other than the fact that Jared did own a 22 pistol
36:45and we knew that pistol was now missing
36:47but every single piece of evidence was pointing towards Jared as the perpetrator here
36:57the location of the torso location of limbs location of a lot of other evidence including saw blades
37:06and bloody clothing that kind of spoke for itself and moody Demetrius anybody else who was in Ashley's life
37:18was pretty quickly ruled out given that the evidence wasn't pointing anywhere else other than Franklin Street
37:27what do I make of Jared's story that she shot herself I think it's absolute
37:34who in their right mind would go through the efforts that he did
37:42to saw-saw through limbs
37:46slice through flesh
37:48package it in boxes
37:53dispose of identifying parts of a body
38:00drag a torso down to the basement
38:06if you didn't have anything to do with that death
38:15nobody would do that
38:17I do believe
38:21the fact that we could not find her head
38:23was an attempt to cover up
38:25her cause of death
38:27nothing is ever going to change my mind
38:30he shot her twice in the head
38:32Ashley knew about gun safety
38:39and
38:40she knew it wasn't a toy
38:42I just pray
38:44she was gone immediately
38:46and
38:48didn't suffer
38:49because that's something I couldn't remember
38:5520 years
38:59I've known him
39:01and never once did I think that he was capable of something like this
39:05and looking back it is so haunting
39:07he slept in a bed with us
39:10I don't think you can really fathom like thinking about anything as bad as it ended up being
39:15not only do we have to grieve her
39:17but we have to grieve what he did to her
39:19it wasn't a place for her to be in the basement
39:23she was in the dark
39:25and cold
39:26it's just
39:28too hard to
39:29think about
39:31that he did away with her like she was trash
39:34and she's not trash
39:35I cry seven days
39:51a week
39:51seven
39:53I am left
39:55with nothing
39:56but voicemails
39:57I am never going to see my daughter
40:01get married
40:03or have a child
40:04I'm never going to be able
40:06to hold
40:08and hug
40:09my daughter
40:10I do know that
40:13God is real
40:13I do know
40:15that he can do more damage
40:17than I ever
40:17could
40:18here on this earth
40:20and I know
40:21everybody involved
40:23will pay
40:34anybody who knows anything
40:43anonymous
40:44make an anonymous call
40:46it's her head
40:48her hands
40:49her neck
40:51and her feet
40:52I need the rest of my child home
40:55I need them
40:56to say what they did with her
40:59that's what I need
41:01not very often
