00:00Jaden Daniels, though, also a big question mark.

00:04We're hearing from Dan Quinn that he is a day-to-day situation right now,

00:10which isn't good.

00:11But, you know, this is the unsung hero here in the NFL,

00:16and maybe one of the worst-kept secrets is you better have a competent

00:20backup quarterback to be able to hold the fourth down.

00:23Now, there's limits to this, right?

00:26Asking a backup quarterback to, you know, win you seven games,

00:30six games in a row here to try to save your season is one thing.

00:34But a good backup quarterback should be able to get you two wins,

00:38like Mack Jones just did in San Francisco for Brock Purdy.

00:42I don't know that there's any rush to get Jaden Daniels back on the field.

00:45I wouldn't, if I was Dan Quinn, be rushing to get him back out on the field,

00:50not with an experienced guy in Mariota who just helped your team put up

00:55more offense and more points than Jaden Daniels had in the two games

00:59that he's played so far this season.

01:02So, you know, don't forget, he's a second-year quarterback now,

01:05Jaden Daniels, that didn't even look remotely close to what he did a year ago.

01:11And, again, you give defensive coordinators a year of tape on you

01:15to figure out what your tendencies are.

01:17You're not going to be as electric as you were a year ago.

01:20But Mariota, I think, more than capable of holding the fort down here

01:24for Washington, which is why you need a capable backup here.

01:29So I wouldn't push him, and I don't think there's a rush to get him back

01:33out on the field at this point as long as Mariota can continue to deliver

01:37offensively like he just did last week against the Raiders.

01:42No, I couldn't agree more.

01:43I mean, like you said, Mariota with more offense in that one game

01:47than Daniels had in the first two combined.

01:49I realized, you know, there was a good Packers defense in there

01:52in that loss, sandwiched in between the couple of wins

01:55that the Commanders have had so far, beat up on the Giants there

01:58in week one.

01:59But Mariota, to your point, is a very experienced pro,

02:05just a good, solid journeyman backup quarterback who, as you noted,

02:10is capable of coming in and winning you games.

02:13You know, to me, I was invested in Washington to cover this past week.

02:16I saw a lot of value in that line as it plummeted from, what,

02:21seven and a half points to three and a half points with the news

02:24that Jaden Daniels was not going to play.

02:26To me, massive overreaction against a very underwhelming Seattle team,

02:31especially, you know, or Vegas team, pardon me,

02:34especially defensively on the other side.

02:36You know, you're thinking about Pete Carroll, you immediately think of Seattle.

02:40This Vegas team, not great.

02:41And so Mariota was able to, then, out there, torch them offensively.

02:46And I think that right now, as you said,

02:49you look ahead to this upcoming schedule for Washington,

02:52and sure, you'd like to win the division.

02:54It is Philadelphia's right now.

02:56It's 3-0 versus 2-1,

02:58and probably will belong to the Super Bowl champs

03:01by the end of the regular season as well.

03:03But Mariota, without a doubt,

03:05gives you a chance to at least stay alive in the fight.

03:08You know, this coming weekend, you have the Falcons.

03:11Will this team be a little bit desperate to respond to what just happened

03:15and everything we've been talking about with the poor play from Michael Penix

03:18and anyone feeling like jobs are on the line?

03:21Sure.

03:21Entirely possible, and it's in Atlanta as well.

03:24Still, I think Mariota out, you know, out there is going to be more than serviceable offensively,

03:30so it comes down to can your defense do its job?

03:33Are you going to win against the Chargers the following week,

03:36whether it's Mariota or Daniels?

03:38I'm not sure it really makes a difference the way that L.A. is going right now.

03:42This Chargers team is looking like a true bona fide contender

03:46and quite possibly a team that wins this AFC West, you know,

03:50first time the Chiefs haven't won it in nearly a decade if that comes to fruition.

03:54And then you keep going.

03:55Bears, Cowboys.

03:57I'm not saying this is what they want, but you have a stretch here

04:00where if you really felt it would be beneficial to Jaden Daniels

04:04to kind of loosely shut him down, I know they wouldn't use those terms.

04:09They'll go week to week for as long as possible,

04:11but if you wanted to internally have those conversations, Joe,

04:15about shutting this guy down for about a month,

04:17it's a very favorable time on the schedule to do it,

04:20and I think you'll be more than treading water with Mariota out there.
