00:00:00Turn here from 10.30 for a brief update and of course the bulk of the night time racing will be on Eurosport through the night tonight.
00:00:10Pit stops fast and furious for the lead group, Dindo Capello's Audi car number one you saw on pit road having service, nose being changed.
00:00:18I wonder whether they're going for a slightly higher downforce configuration from our elevated viewpoint.
00:00:24It looks like there are more louvers over the front wheel. It may just be that there was some problem with the lights or something else because you must have running lights on the cars.
00:00:33Also out goes car number 17. That's Simon Paginot in the Pescarolo Porsche. Martin Haven, Simon Hill and Jeremy Shaw with you.
00:00:42Jeremy, you've been keeping tabs on the fuel situation. Did they manage to squeeze an extra lap out of Capello's car?
00:00:49Did they manage to squeeze anything extra out of the tank in Paginot's number 17?
00:00:54Yes. 13 laps for both of those two on that stint. Simon Paginot's car, they did change tyres due to a fresh set of Michelin's on to the car number 17, the Pescarolo Sport Peugeot.
00:01:07And at car number one, we saw a change in the nose. That's the second time they've done that, isn't it?
00:01:12I think that's absolutely right, yes. They do have different configurations.
00:01:16The louvers over the front wheels, which are to take air out from the brakes and so on, they also have an aerodynamic effect.
00:01:23They can create more or less downforce. They help to balance the rear wing.
00:01:27It may be perhaps that the driver was complaining of understeer.
00:01:30Maybe he was complaining of oversteer where the back of the car is loose because there's too much grip at the front.
00:01:35And so it's a very subtle way of balancing the car aerodynamically, which, of course, here at over 200 miles an hour on the straights is so important.
00:01:44He's completely right. And the other key thing with that is that we talked about the fact that the only possible disadvantage of the Deezers, we see one of the Peugeot.
00:01:54I can't see which one that is from here, running very, very wide.
00:01:56There's the level of commitment, trying to take a good run, getting a better run, obviously, in a faster car out of the Monsanto-Cicaine there,
00:02:03clearly adding no other option than to either brake or go on the gravel.
00:02:07And racing drivers tend not to like to brake at the start of the straight for obvious reasons.
00:02:11It loses an awful lot of momentum.
00:02:12The point was, we're talking about the handling characteristics, heavy engine at the back, a diesel engine obviously heavier than a petrol engine.
00:02:18Anyone that drives a diesel road car will know what we mean.
00:02:20Therefore, sometimes they have to jack the car up a little bit more.
00:02:22They sit the car a bit higher at the back than they are at the front.
00:02:25It can affect the handling.
00:02:26It means they have to balance the car aerodynamically in a slightly different way.
00:02:30Looking here at the battle, Jeremy, between the two Pescarello team cars as Audi No. 3 is on pit lane.
00:02:37This car now back up to 8th.
00:02:38Yes.
00:02:39And who's at the wheel?
00:02:40Timo Bernhardt.
00:02:41It remains at the wheel of that car.
00:02:43He's not anonymous as it has on the timing.
00:02:45That's his second pit stop.
00:02:47So it'll be a third stint for Timo Bernhardt.
00:02:49They did, however, put fresh Michelin tyres on this time around.
00:02:53Well, do you know what?
00:02:54For the extra 20 seconds it takes, they probably need the speed, don't they?
00:02:59Checking inside the huge, gaping, whale-like mouth of that Audi and clearly looking for debris or something that might be causing it to overheat.
00:03:09As we see the two Pescarello run cars, the diesel Peugeot and the petrol engine Pesca Judd swapping positions on the racetrack.
00:03:18Well, they are a couple of laps, but several laps apart.
00:03:21Number two is on pit road.
00:03:23Magic Marco.
00:03:24Marco Werner is still at the wheel of that one.
00:03:26Again, a scheduled stop here for car number two.
00:03:29And again, ready to go with the nose.
00:03:31Three, two, one.
00:03:33As soon as the fuel...
00:03:34I was spot on.
00:03:35As soon as the fuel hose has come off, click.
00:03:37Off come those fasteners.
00:03:39Off comes the nose.
00:03:39So, again, and maybe, Simon Hill, this is because of having just six hours of relentlessly wet running on Wednesday where really nothing got done in terms of hot, dry conditions.
00:03:51And then Thursday, we didn't start till seven at night.
00:03:53Till now, we have not run in the heat of the day like this at all at Le Mans this year.
00:03:58And so we're now perhaps seeing them changing back to a more evening configuration where the track is getting a little less slick,
00:04:07a little less slippery as maybe some of the heat comes out from the sun.
00:04:10Yeah, the temperature changes and the rubber is increasing massively now.
00:04:13Obviously, we're getting more and more and more.
00:04:1565 laps now of intense driving for these guys throughout the 55 cars.
00:04:20And that could be a factor, too.
00:04:22Also, the real key thing, if you said quite rightly, Martin, is that they are still really thinking, right, we pretty much think we know where we need to go with this car.
00:04:30But the only way you're going to find out is when you get Dindo Capello, Alan McNish, and the rest of the guys going,
00:04:34this is what this car is doing for me at the moment.
00:04:36I need, as a racing driver, the car to do this.
00:04:39So one way of doing it is an aerodynamic change like that or a setup change, which has to be done quickly, as we've seen.
00:04:45And it does make me laugh when I see that, the way these guys are hovering over the car, ready to go with their spanners there to do the job of this rule of,
00:04:53let's have two guys, only two guys, it's going to be cost-saving.
00:04:56No, it's not.
00:04:57It's just changed the way they go about it.
00:04:59Well, the fundamental problem with that cost-saving is you can't run one of these cars with just two mechanics.
00:05:04You need the whole team of mechanics, so they're all here anyway.
00:05:07Anyway, so like a NASCAR race, Jeremy, we're seeing the cars, the teams chasing the setup of the car as weather conditions change, as the track rubbers up.
00:05:16It's going to be very interesting.
00:05:18Yeah, quite frankly, I hate it.
00:05:20The pit stops take so long in the Le Mans series, but that's just a...
00:05:24Well, if you want quick pit stops, you can go to Formula One, because you don't get racing, but you know.
00:05:28Yeah, that's too fast.
00:05:29Right, let's get down to the pit road, catch up with Lucas Luer.
00:05:34Lucas Luer, the cars were just inside, and at your car you changed the front, why?
00:05:39Lucas Luer, the car was in the pit, it looked like you were changing the nose at the front, what was that all about?
00:05:49So yeah, we're trying to balance the setup of the car.
00:05:55Well, obviously from the start it's been clear that Peugeot is quite a lot faster than us, so we're trying to find a bit of pace.
00:06:02Can you give us a little more details?
00:06:05No.
00:06:06Well, it doesn't look that bad at the moment.
00:06:11Yeah, we want 20 hours still to go, so a lot of changes can happen here.
00:06:18Peugeot is going very, very fast, though.
00:06:22Can you go as quickly as that?
00:06:25Well, Car3 had a few problems at the beginning, but we're still fighting.
00:06:30We're here, we will not give up right till the end.
00:06:34Well, Didier-Andre Pierrague and Frank Maillot, we talked about them a few minutes ago, and the car could not possibly have stopped in a worse place if they'd sat down and scratched their heads and planned it.
00:06:44It's not only just about at the end of the laps, he's got to do another whole one, he's on the opposite side of the pit wall where he wants to be.
00:06:52Now, somehow, he's gone through the start sequence and got that car going again.
00:06:57I'm not quite sure what was up with it, but it's a very bizarre place to choose to park for a Sunday picnic.
00:07:02That has all the sort of indications of a kind of come out of the chicane, call for a gear, nothing happens, car suddenly won't work, some sort of electro-hydraulically issue maybe.
00:07:16Gone for the good old-fashioned switch it all off, switch it back on again.
00:07:19Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and would appear this time, luckily for Didier, it has worked.
00:07:23The other option might be, he was sitting there flicking on the reserve tank pump.
00:07:27Yes, it could well be the one.
00:07:28So, you know, not everybody is still absolutely on the money when it comes to how far the fuel goes, possibly, but, yeah, it seems unlikely that it was anything other than either fuel or electrics,
00:07:38because if it was more major than that, it wouldn't have got going quite so quickly.
00:07:42There was no pools of oil and no smoke, which is a good sign from that point of view.
00:07:47So, we're going to take a quick commercial break.
00:07:49You can see the standings there in front of you.
00:07:50This is after four hours of the Le Mans race.
00:07:53Peugeot still very much the dominant force here.
00:07:56They've got track position and pace.
00:07:59Audi are doing some serious head-scratching in the Le Mans 24 hours.
00:08:08Welcome back live to Le Mans, where, as you can see, it's a Corvette 123 at the moment in the GT1 class.
00:08:15It's looking there at the 64 car, the second of the Corvettes in the running order.
00:08:21Don't forget, leman.eurosport at yahoo.com is our email address.
00:08:25Get to a couple of the questions in a short while.
00:08:28Thank you to everybody for pointing out that Bruno Senna did not crash the Orica car earlier on.
00:08:32It was Stefan Ortele, incidentally.
00:08:34I had had my eyes off the screen while they changed over.
00:08:38Peugeot lead, one, two.
00:08:40Audi, three, four.
00:08:42And Aston Martin, the Lola Aston Martins, Aston Martin Racing in five and six positions overall.
00:08:48So let's have a quick word in the pitch.
00:08:50We're going to catch up with Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich.
00:08:52Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich, I have just asked Lukas Lohr why the front was switched to both cars.
00:09:04We've already had a chat with Lukas Lohr about changing the noses on the front of the cars.
00:09:09He couldn't tell us an awful lot.
00:09:12What about it?
00:09:12Well, what we're trying to do with the new bodywork, the different bodywork, is to get a bit more pace out of the car.
00:09:20We've had a bit of problem with the steering on the cars.
00:09:26So we're trying to sort the cars with a problem that hasn't appeared during qualifying.
00:09:33Are you going to find enough speed to catch the Peugeots?
00:09:36Well, certainly we're going to try to.
00:09:37Thank you, sir.
00:10:07And built a substantial advantage over Audi.
00:10:10And now they are sitting, doing a good race pace, maintaining that gap.
00:10:15Yeah, now Audi should be worried, very, very worried at this point.
00:10:18Because Peugeot have been four stinting their tyres in this heat.
00:10:21And they were still, Sarazen was still running close to 25s at times in this heat.
00:10:27I mean, that is quite, quite of great concern to Audi.
00:10:32Audi, we know a bit more about Audi.
00:10:34We've been down there.
00:10:34What's happening, this new nose shape is just sucking up any debris there is around the track.
00:10:39We saw it with Alan McNish a couple of hours ago.
00:10:41He had something jammed in the front.
00:10:43And I mean, you know, we've used this phrase before.
00:10:45Peugeot, they're going down the straight, sucking all the rabbits out the hedges, and now just picking them up.
00:10:50Yes, it's a bit of an unusual situation.
00:10:55There's only one time we've ever seen Audi not on the pace.
00:10:58And that was the first year they came here with the R8s and the R8R and R8C.
00:11:03The first ever Audis that raced here.
00:11:05Then the race was won by BMW.
00:11:07Since then, whenever an Audi has been here, it's won the race.
00:11:11And more than often, clean swept the podium.
00:11:13So this is an unusual situation for the team to be in, fighting back.
00:11:16And not a situation they would want to be in either.
00:11:20I think this is going to make them very, very nervous.
00:11:23I mean, based on the way the qualifying was, I think Audi probably had high hopes.
00:11:28They were thinking, we've brought out a new car.
00:11:30It's going to be really quick.
00:11:31We can now really take the pace with Peugeot.
00:11:33But, you know, they just seem to be dropping off.
00:11:35They're now running a lap down from the Peugeot as well, which is definitely not good at this early stage in the race.
00:11:40This is going to have Wolfgang Ulrich very, very worried indeed.
00:11:44And they're going to have to find a way to pick the pace up.
00:11:46I mean, perhaps at night, they might be able to find a bit of pace.
00:11:49Because we're seeing it's very hot out there.
00:11:51It's in the 30s, definitely.
00:11:53And maybe there's just a way that Peugeot's utilizing their tires a bit better.
00:11:57That was the sound of straws being clutched out there, ladies and gentlemen.
00:12:01Night is not long enough here to make a difference.
00:12:03It's not really even long enough at Daytona to make a difference.
00:12:06009 coming back out after another elongated pit stop.
00:12:10So, maybe if we could just have a little look further than the top four,
00:12:14it might be interesting to go and find out what is happening down at Aston Martin.
00:12:17Maybe we can send Sebastian down there.
00:12:19009 leaves, as you see.
00:12:21007 and 008, the other two Lola chassis Aston Martins, are in fifth and sixth position.
00:12:28Simon Pagino, seventh in the number 17 Pescarolo Peugeot.
00:12:31LMP2, still, it's the Porsche's battling.
00:12:34The Essex car is a minute ahead of the team go-car.
00:12:37GT1 is the preserve of Corvette.
00:12:41Corvette's running first, second, third and fourth.
00:12:44But in GT, the gap now running the rack ahead of Seth Neiman in the Flying Lizards car.
00:12:50It's out to 40 seconds at the head of the GT2 class.
00:12:53Pierre Caffer, 50 seconds behind Seth Neiman in third place in the best place Ferrari.
00:12:58But I imagine that gap will be coming down.
00:13:00We're looking at the gap here between Thomas Enger and Jos Verstappen.
00:13:043 minutes 34.1 to 3 minutes 33.8 between the two Aston Martins on the last lap.
00:13:11Lola Aston Martins.
00:13:12There is very little at all between those two Aston Martin racing entries as they go by Seth Neiman.
00:13:17That is Jos Verstappen flashing the headlights.
00:13:20Yeah, and looking further down now, we did follow of some interest on Thursday night.
00:13:24The progress of the little stracker, Janetta Zaitek.
00:13:28Now, Danny Watts hasn't driven this car until now.
00:13:30He's got on board about half an hour ago, and he's just put in a series of fastest laps at 3.36, 3.35.
00:13:37And he's just, as we're talking, done a 3.34.
00:13:40And he's pulled that car up from 18th to 16th.
00:13:42He's now knocking on the door of the two Porsche Spiders.
00:13:45He's on the same lap, and he's about two minutes behind them.
00:13:47So, I expect to see that car haul itself past the LM2 leaders.
00:13:52Of course, the Janetta Zaitek is a LMP1 car.
00:13:56Danny Watts on board.
00:13:58And it's all looking good there, Liz.
00:14:00Very strong performance.
00:14:02It is.
00:14:02And we were speaking with Danny Watts earlier before the race, and they're planning on doing quadruple stints at night.
00:14:07And it's also very interesting.
00:14:08They've got a different wheel for their night stints, which is a new one for me.
00:14:12But normally, you'd have a dimmer switch on the wheel.
00:14:14But apparently, they're changing driver and wheel at some point in the evening, which should be an interesting pit stop for them.
00:14:20So, we'll wait and see how that works out.
00:14:22But certainly, I think he's a man on a mission, and he's pushing hard.
00:14:25But I think he's just done the fastest lap the car has done, just in his last lap.
00:14:29Yeah, Peter Hartman started it, and then Nick Leventus took over.
00:14:34Nick, unfortunately, had an off in it.
00:14:35Not serious, but a spin.
00:14:37But Nick, I think, is going to learn a lot this weekend.
00:14:40It's a very steep learning curve at Le Mans, but he's going to come out of this a better driver.
00:14:43Oh, absolutely.
00:14:44I think as long as you can keep pushing on at Le Mans, you know, you spend so much time in the car with so many different speed differentials,
00:14:50and you've got the difference of the real circuit and the actual road to deal with,
00:14:53you come away much stronger, much more wisened driver, I think is the best way to put it.
00:14:58Anyway, we've got one of the icons of Le Mans joining us now.
00:15:01Not Jack Eakes, but Hugh Chamberlain, far more important.
00:15:05Hugh, who's never let me forget the time about 10 years ago.
00:15:08He's up in this cabin, and I said, Sunday morning, Hugh, you're running in third in Group C2.
00:15:13This must be your finest moment.
00:15:15And Hugh said, if you don't count the year we won, yes.
00:15:18We're just going to take a quick break, and we'll be back with larger-than-life Hugh Chamberlain
00:15:21and find out why he's here.
00:15:23We're back live on Eurosport at the Le Mans.
00:15:3224 hours.
00:15:33We are now some 5 hours and 12 minutes.
00:15:385 hours and 12 minutes, I say.
00:15:406 hours and 12 minutes.
00:15:41Well, that's your, but it's only now.
00:15:42No, we're 4 hours and 12 minutes into the race.
00:15:44Peugeot leading Sarrazan from David Brabham in the number 9 Peugeot.
00:15:50And we've just had a change of order for third place.
00:15:53Dindo Capello has just taken position off his teammate, Marco Werner, and just put the car's
00:15:58fastest lap of the race so far, 328.50.
00:16:02Alan McNish in that car.
00:16:03Our last year's winner with Dindo and Tom Christensen couldn't get below 329, but Dindo a 328.
00:16:08Great performance by the Italian.
00:16:10Now, we've joined, as we said, we've promised before the break by Hugh Chamberlain.
00:16:13Hugh, of course, is Chamberlain's synergy, but also synonymous with Le Mans over the years.
00:16:19And Hugh, first time for years, you haven't actually been running a car here, or helping
00:16:23with running one.
00:16:24That's right.
00:16:25It's a very, very strange feeling, particularly when the sun's shining and things are happening.
00:16:30It's going to be wonderful when it, if it does pour with rain, I can actually go and
00:16:35do something else, which I couldn't do normally.
00:16:37But, yes, it's a very strange feeling.
00:16:40So, you've found all the Crape Suzette bars and the ice cream bars?
00:16:43No, I haven't, actually.
00:16:44I've been extremely boring.
00:16:46I've been looking at motorcars, and you walk up and down the pit lane and think, I think
00:16:51I could do better than that.
00:16:52Which, of course, is absolute nonsense, but it's...
00:16:55Now, Hugh, you are, in fact, connected with the Gigawave program at the moment, aren't
00:16:58you?
00:16:58The Nissan program?
00:17:00Well, I don't know whether I'm connected with it, but I'm aware of it.
00:17:04Yeah.
00:17:04I know the guys there.
00:17:06You know the guys there, yeah.
00:17:08Just tell us something about why they withdrew the Aston Martin.
00:17:10Well, I'm not part of the wall that goes on there, so I'm not 100% sure, but I believe
00:17:19that there was a...
00:17:20Basically, they had other things to do, and they came first.
00:17:24So, where the Nissan was in relation to the Aston, I don't know.
00:17:27Anyway, what about your plan?
00:17:29What are you doing?
00:17:30What's your future?
00:17:31Well, I'm involved with a number of things, including for rather fun and games.
00:17:37I'm actually involved with a guy with a Lola T70, which is a bit different, but it's
00:17:42a lovely, lovely Meta car.
00:17:44So, yes, I'm involved with Aston Martin and with their GT4, some GT4 cars, and Bob's still
00:17:53around, and he's doing quite well in Group C with his various cars, and a Lola, and that's
00:17:59unfortunately I've been kept busy, which is not really what I've wanted to do at all.
00:18:05So, the GT4 car, what is the main difference between that and this car we're looking at
00:18:09now, the Paul Grayson's GT2?
00:18:12About 200 grand.
00:18:13Yeah.
00:18:14Oh, that's nuts.
00:18:14Which way?
00:18:16Yeah.
00:18:17No, the Paul Grayson car is a GT2 car.
00:18:19Full-on racer, yeah.
00:18:20Full-on race car.
00:18:21And our things are really track-day cars in a way.
00:18:26I don't want to be unkind, but they were built originally, I'm sure, as a track-day
00:18:30car.
00:18:30They're a road car with nothing inside other than a roll cage.
00:18:34So, the basic package comes from ProDrive, and then you buy a new car, which is suitable
00:18:40for track days, and it's also suitable for going racing.
00:18:46We're just going down to the pits.
00:18:47Hold on a moment.
00:18:48Pedro, your car is quite far now, after the mistakes, but do you think it's still possible
00:18:55to do something?
00:18:57It's very difficult.
00:18:58We will push and try to do our best and see where we can arrive.
00:19:03But we are just keeping the same rhythm that the front car, so it's over seven laps behind.
00:19:11It's very difficult.
00:19:11It's a lot of race to go, but very difficult.
00:19:15For you, it's quite difficult.
00:19:17So, how do you pass over to get back in the car and still push?
00:19:22Well, it's very difficult for me, but I have to find motivation and enjoy on the track.
00:19:29Try to enjoy it, because it's a very nice track, very good car to drive.
00:19:32And I try to enjoy myself and do the best for the team.
00:19:36Thank you, Pedro.
00:19:37Thank you very much.
00:19:38So, Pedro's car at the moment in the hands of Christian Cleo, and they're in 20th place.
00:19:42And if you're just joining us for our non-stop-demand coverage, that's a car that had a collision
00:19:47in the pit lane with the sister Pascarolo Peugeot.
00:19:50I mean, how embarrassing was that?
00:19:52And poor Mark had to go...
00:19:54Pedro had to go out and do a whole lap, 12 kilometres with the tire, shredding everything,
00:20:00including turbo suspension and intercoolers.
00:20:03And Hugh, if one of your cars had had that collision in the pit lane, would you have been in a position
00:20:07to stop him going out and call it and get the car rolled back?
00:20:10Well, I would sincerely hope that I wouldn't be stupid enough to let the car out in the first place.
00:20:15I mean, it's just extraordinary that an organisation like that should behave in that way.
00:20:20I mean, why would you employ somebody who lets a car out and takes another one of his sister cars,
00:20:26and it doesn't have any car, but a sister car is even worse.
00:20:29So, that's the first thing.
00:20:32The second thing is, yes, you should have been stopped,
00:20:35because you can't have a collision like that and assume on a track like this
00:20:39that you're going to be OK for the next N kilometres.
00:20:43So, it's perfectly legal to stop him.
00:20:46You can't reverse back and do a three-point turn of parking.
00:20:50But you can stop him, and they should have done, I think.
00:20:53But then I wasn't in the pit lane at the time.
00:20:56He to the moment.
00:20:57I mean, you know, there's a possibility.
00:20:58One of our colleagues suggested he may not even have felt the collision and just continued.
00:21:03Well, he may not have done, but I would have thought the guy who let him out might have seen it,
00:21:07because he's lucky enough to get run over.
00:21:08Well, he's probably not around anymore now.
00:21:10He's probably already on a train on his way back.
00:21:13I was thinking, yeah.
00:21:14But there's always that possibility.
00:21:16Hugh, just to get back to your plans, then, Aston Martin GT4 programme.
00:21:20What about, are we going to see you at Le Mans again?
00:21:21That's what we really want to know.
00:21:23Not until next year.
00:21:25Not until next year.
00:21:26I might be here tomorrow morning, but apart from that, I'm hoping to be back next year.
00:21:30Yeah, but with something.
00:21:31With something, yes, yes, yes.
00:21:32I wouldn't, I don't think I'm going to continue to come back to spectate.
00:21:37It's not the same.
00:21:38It wouldn't be the same without you.
00:21:39It's not so much fun, I can assure you.
00:21:42It's all right if you've never done it before, because I've been speaking to people in places
00:21:46that I haven't been for years, I mean, out in the car park and work, and they have a wonderful time.
00:21:54And it's great to do that, but if you've actually been inside, it's not quite so much fun.
00:21:59But people who've never been here before, they're beginning to get the atmosphere.
00:22:02I actually spoke to Paul Grayson very quickly, in short-term time before he went out,
00:22:07and he's certainly not overruled by it, but he thinks it's a wonderful, wonderful race and occasion.
00:22:17And it's very nice to see guys who have come here for the first time
00:22:21who just don't think, oh, it's another motor race, because it sure as hell isn't.
00:22:24How could you ever consider Le Mans just another motor race?
00:22:28Well, people do.
00:22:29Anybody who thinks that should not be here.
00:22:31Absolutely.
00:22:32If I'm being honest.
00:22:33Yes, it's right.
00:22:34You know, you don't enjoy breathing, isn't it, if you don't enjoy Le Mans?
00:22:37Exactly, exactly.
00:22:38It's sort of the rest of life is just waiting, really, isn't it?
00:22:41Just to update you what's happening at the moment, out on the track,
00:22:44we are still Peugeot 1-2, Stefan Sarazan from David Bradman,
00:22:47third place, Dindo Capello, fourth place, Marco Werner.
00:22:51Peugeot, Peugeot, Audi, Audi, and then the two Lola Aston Martins of Thomas Enger
00:22:55and Jos Verstappen.
00:22:57Let's go back down to the pits, where Justine is waiting for us.
00:23:02Olivier, rentré tout à l'heure parce qu'il y avait un petit problème.
00:23:05Vous avez repris le relais derrière, ça s'est plutôt bien passé.
00:23:07Well, you've just had a problem, Nicolas.
00:23:20Yeah, well, it's getting on really well, going quickly,
00:23:22and suddenly we...
00:23:23Donc, je pense qu'on va revenir de plus en plus dans le rythme.
00:23:27Towers are just getting better and better as the race goes on,
00:23:29going faster and faster.
00:23:31We've found the pace now,
00:23:35and we've got no problem.
00:23:37We've got to keep going fast and not lose any time.
00:23:43The rest of the competition is quite a long way ahead.
00:23:45Oui, je pense qu'on a une voiture qui est un peu moins performant que les autres.
00:23:48So, the main thing is...
00:23:49Be safe, because we've got less power.
00:23:53Merci, Nicolas.
00:23:54Yeah, we've got to go to the end of tomorrow.
00:23:57Let's see.
00:23:58Just as we saw that, up flashes the sign.
00:24:01Pierre Caffer in trouble.
00:24:04Yeah, it looks like he's not respecting the track limits, it appears,
00:24:07and I think what we're seeing there is a man on a mission,
00:24:10because, you know, Seth Neiman at the moment is the one who's...
00:24:13He's a bit off the pace from what the others were.
00:24:15You know, that car was in the lead.
00:24:16It's moved down to third place now since he's been in.
00:24:18So, I think Pierre is seeing his moment.
00:24:20He's moved the car up to second place,
00:24:23and I think he's a man on a mission trying to catch Raymond Narak,
00:24:26who's just done his fastest lap.
00:24:29Well, not his fastest, the car's fastest lap.
00:24:31That's amazing.
00:24:32Stay with us now.
00:24:33We'll be back with you on Eurosport Live.
00:24:41Welcome back to the Le Mans 24 Hours.
00:24:43You are live with us on Eurosport,
00:24:45and we're just watching this incredible race unfolding now.
00:24:49There's been so much action.
00:24:50It's all about Peugeot at the moment.
00:24:52They're out in front, got almost a lap over the Audis,
00:24:55and we're just noticing some lap times really start to fly.
00:24:59We've seen Dindo Capello do some of his fastest sectors so far,
00:25:03and also the real story there is Raymond Narak in the Porsche,
00:25:06leading that GT2 class at the moment,
00:25:08has just done some of his fastest sectors, his fastest lap,
00:25:11and in fact now has just done another fastest sector time.
00:25:15Now, I think what we're seeing here
00:25:16is that the track is starting to rubber up a bit.
00:25:18We've had a different sort of week.
00:25:20They've not had quite as much running two weeks before
00:25:23to help the track rubber up,
00:25:24and we had a lot of rain on Wednesday.
00:25:26We've had really mixed conditions.
00:25:27Today is the first day of really warm running that we've had.
00:25:31Proper warm weather, lots of cars on the circuit,
00:25:34and I think what we're seeing here
00:25:35is that the track's starting to rubber up,
00:25:36it's starting to come to these drivers,
00:25:38and now the times are starting to come.
00:25:39That's you.
00:25:41I mean, you've been in this position so many times.
00:25:43You get towards the evening,
00:25:44suddenly you find the new cars are going faster and faster,
00:25:47even though you're telling your drivers just to keep it cool.
00:25:50Yeah, it is a problem.
00:25:51It depends.
00:25:52I mean, many of the years I was here,
00:25:54I was with gentlemen drivers,
00:25:56and it's slightly different with them
00:25:58because you want to make sure they realise
00:26:02there was an awfully long time to go,
00:26:03so you have to be very, very careful
00:26:05to make sure they are doing the right thing.
00:26:09And I'm not being rude about my drivers at this stage
00:26:12because this year I don't have any,
00:26:13but they do have a tendency to go quicker and quicker,
00:26:18and then suddenly something bites them
00:26:19because it's here, it's Le Mans,
00:26:21and they're going far, far quicker
00:26:22than they have all year for the previous year.
00:26:26So, yes, you've got to be very careful,
00:26:28but with professional drivers, it's very different.
00:26:30They know exactly what's going on,
00:26:31and if they don't, they shouldn't be here.
00:26:36We're getting back to that thread again, aren't we?
00:26:39Yes, but, yes, the guys are perfectly aware
00:26:43of the track conditions,
00:26:44but you have to be aware of it in the pit lane
00:26:47and make sure that if you need to,
00:26:50you inform your drivers,
00:26:51and if you don't,
00:26:53then you make sure the driver's going in
00:26:54is aware of what the position is.
00:26:56And you just watch that drive,
00:26:58and you have to know where your car is
00:27:01and where your drivers are
00:27:02in relation to the guys around you.
00:27:05If you're at the front,
00:27:06obviously it's a completely different kettle of fish
00:27:08than if you're down the lower part of your category
00:27:11because there you've got to finish,
00:27:14and that's the most important thing.
00:27:16These guys are assuming they will
00:27:17as long as they're thrown at the wall.
00:27:19They're racing to win, aren't they?
00:27:20They're racing to win.
00:27:21Not to finish, they're racing to win.
00:27:22Absolutely.
00:27:23So that is a different situation.
00:27:25Good point.
00:27:26But for most of the guys,
00:27:29the majority of the drivers here
00:27:31are here to be around at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon.
00:27:35And they thrash the cars now.
00:27:39And this is just looking at the times coming down,
00:27:41and the team manager's thinking,
00:27:42whoa, hang on a minute, boys.
00:27:43We've got to be careful here
00:27:44because you're not worried now,
00:27:48but at midday or 1 o'clock tomorrow,
00:27:50you're going to be thinking,
00:27:52I wish I hadn't gone quite,
00:27:53and is that funny noise going to be all right,
00:27:56and am I worried about this?
00:27:57There are all sorts of things
00:27:58that you wish to heaven you'd thought about earlier
00:28:01when it comes to 1 o'clock tomorrow.
00:28:03Hindsight's a wonderful gift, isn't it?
00:28:05Exactly.
00:28:06But you have still got them three hours to go.
00:28:08Two hours to go.
00:28:09Now, in this race,
00:28:11we've got up to 30 rookie drivers
00:28:13in this particular race,
00:28:14which is a huge number.
00:28:15It's a lot of people new to the track
00:28:16who haven't had a proper practice weekend
00:28:18like we normally do as well.
00:28:20I mean, in that situation,
00:28:21would you, as the team owner say,
00:28:24you know, would you set them a lap time
00:28:25that you'd want them to do
00:28:26if you had a car full of rookies,
00:28:28saying they're not in the lead, obviously,
00:28:29saying they're at a finish,
00:28:30or would you say,
00:28:31just do a time that you're comfortable at
00:28:34that you think isn't pushing the realms,
00:28:35or how would you approach that situation?
00:28:37Well, the thing about Le Mans
00:28:38is you do have a long time
00:28:39to think about it and talk to drivers.
00:28:41The difficult bit that I've always found
00:28:43is getting the drivers
00:28:43trying to listen to what you say.
00:28:45And even if they do listen,
00:28:46you've then got to make sure
00:28:48that they actually do it.
00:28:50But, yeah, once you've got them under control,
00:28:53then you have a time to do.
00:28:56Right, we're going to go down here
00:28:57from Alex Wurtz.
00:28:58Out is Alex Wurtz,
00:28:59that car, of course,
00:29:01running there in the top five at the moment.
00:29:03Alex, are you still running second?
00:29:06It's a very good start.
00:29:09It could be better, you know,
00:29:10because the safety car came very unfortunate for me.
00:29:14I was just five seconds behind Frank
00:29:17on a different strategy.
00:29:19I wanted to stay out longer than him,
00:29:21also with a different set of tires,
00:29:23so all looked very good for me
00:29:24to sneak the lead after the pit stops.
00:29:27But then the safety car...
00:29:30And these guys decided to take me out of the car.
00:29:32I didn't know why.
00:29:34But anyway, that's the team decision.
00:29:35So now it's Mark and David on P2,
00:29:38so it's still a long race to go.
00:29:40It's okay.
00:29:42Is it for you?
00:29:43Are you allowed to push
00:29:44to get the first place?
00:29:47With the team?
00:29:49I think we...
00:29:50Ask these guys.
00:29:53I want to push them first.
00:29:54But I think we're now switching to a safer strategy.
00:30:01Is it a little bit of frustration?
00:30:04Nah, it's not frustration.
00:30:06But I'm a red driver.
00:30:07I want to lead.
00:30:08I want to win.
00:30:09And right now we had someone put us
00:30:13one little stone in our way
00:30:14with the safety car
00:30:15and we maybe catch up through the night.
00:30:17So, of course, number nine keeps moving.
00:30:21A little bit of frustration?
00:30:23No.
00:30:23Oh, dear, oh, dear.
00:30:24Not only this voice,
00:30:26it's the body language, isn't it?
00:30:27You're not happy.
00:30:28And it's interesting
00:30:28because we're not really
00:30:29that far into a 24-hour race,
00:30:31let's be honest.
00:30:32You know, we're not three hours from the end
00:30:34or something like that
00:30:34and already you can see
00:30:36the confidence in the Peugeot car.
00:30:38I think that's what we're seeing here
00:30:39is they're saying,
00:30:40no, no, no, you know,
00:30:41we can't do it.
00:30:42And we're this many hours off
00:30:43at showing how good they think
00:30:44those cars are
00:30:45and that they're basically assuming
00:30:46that the lead car is going to carry on
00:30:47as it is with no problems at all.
00:30:49Yeah, well,
00:30:50that's what I was saying earlier.
00:30:51They have to assume
00:30:54that these cars are going to finish
00:30:55and they probably will
00:30:56whether they manage to
00:30:57shoot themselves in the foot again
00:30:58is a different question
00:30:59altogether, of course.
00:31:01But interestingly,
00:31:01he just seen that.
00:31:02She asked him what you'd been saying.
00:31:05You know,
00:31:05will you be allowed to race for the win?
00:31:08Well, Peugeot's lead car
00:31:10is all French at the moment
00:31:11and if you've got,
00:31:13hmm,
00:31:14your second car's got an Australian
00:31:15and Austrian
00:31:16and whatever else it is in.
00:31:19Mark, you know,
00:31:20a Spaniard on board.
00:31:21I mean, you know,
00:31:21which would you as Peugeot want to win?
00:31:24Well,
00:31:24I wouldn't dream of suggesting
00:31:27that they would prefer
00:31:27to have their own
00:31:28countrymen win.
00:31:29I'm not going to.
00:31:29I'm leaving that to you.
00:31:31I wouldn't think of that.
00:31:32Anyway,
00:31:32Hugh,
00:31:32thank you very much
00:31:33for coming and joining us.
00:31:34It's a great pleasure.
00:31:34And any messages
00:31:35for anyone at home?
00:31:36No, no,
00:31:37just that I'm still in one piece.
00:31:39Good.
00:31:40It's very kind of you
00:31:40and the dogs are well.
00:31:41The dogs are well.
00:31:42Excellent.
00:31:43We have to ask you that every year
00:31:45because he's going to phone home to me.
00:31:48He's just bringing his watch.
00:31:49Well,
00:31:49thank you very much
00:31:49and we hope to see you back
00:31:51with the team next year.
00:31:52It's very kind of you.
00:31:53Excellent.
00:31:53Certainly try.
00:31:54Thank you, Hugh.
00:31:55Lovely to see you.
00:31:56So,
00:31:57the situation
00:31:57as we have completed
00:31:5974 laps now.
00:32:00We are
00:32:01four and a half hours
00:32:02into the 24 hours.
00:32:04Sarazan from Brabham
00:32:05both for Peugeot,
00:32:06Capello and Werner
00:32:06both for Audi.
00:32:08And Capello,
00:32:09Liz is just pointing out,
00:32:10just done his car's
00:32:11fastest first sector
00:32:12of the race
00:32:13and that's from the start line
00:32:14down to Tetra Rouge.
00:32:15The two Lola Aston Martins.
00:32:17Haven't seen much of them,
00:32:18have we,
00:32:18while we've been on air.
00:32:20Thomas Enger,
00:32:21Thomas the Tank Enger
00:32:22and Jos Verstappen.
00:32:24Those two.
00:32:24Very neat,
00:32:25isn't it,
00:32:25at the moment?
00:32:26You've got the two Peugeots,
00:32:27the two Audis
00:32:28and the two Lola Aston Martin.
00:32:29Those six factory cars
00:32:31still dominating it
00:32:32and behind them,
00:32:33Peugeot,
00:32:33Audi,
00:32:33Audi,
00:32:34Audi,
00:32:34Audi,
00:32:34Audi.
00:32:35And then Pescarolo
00:32:36in 11th.
00:32:38Juan Barbosa,
00:32:39the best of the petrol cars
00:32:41in the Pescarolo,
00:32:43Pescarolo there.
00:32:45Well,
00:32:45he's the best of the
00:32:46open top petrol cars.
00:32:48Yeah, sorry,
00:32:48the open petrol cars.
00:32:49Yeah, but...
00:32:50Cape has done it again.
00:32:51He's done it again
00:32:52and this time
00:32:53he's gotten a stop and go.
00:32:54Before it was a warning,
00:32:55this time it's a proper
00:32:55stop and go.
00:32:56They will not at all
00:32:57be happy about that
00:32:58because he's actually
00:33:00closing the gap a bit
00:33:01between him and Raymond Narax
00:33:02so that's not going to
00:33:03make that team happy.
00:33:05Especially after the warning
00:33:06which no doubt the team
00:33:07has definitely radioed
00:33:08through to him
00:33:08and said look,
00:33:09you have to respect it.
00:33:10I'm guessing that's down
00:33:11at the Ford chicane.
00:33:12I'm not sure that's my
00:33:13estimation as he's
00:33:14jumping straight over
00:33:14the top of that.
00:33:15Yeah.
00:33:16Which frankly ends up
00:33:17being very hard on a car
00:33:18in this race as well.
00:33:19If you continuously
00:33:21jump the big curbs
00:33:22in a car over and over
00:33:22again,
00:33:23sometimes it catches
00:33:24up with you.
00:33:25David Bradman into the pits.
00:33:26He's coming in for
00:33:27what will be his
00:33:28sixth,
00:33:29seventh stop.
00:33:29He's had six stops
00:33:30already in that car
00:33:31and the team just
00:33:33checking everything out.
00:33:34Refueling,
00:33:35just checking the
00:33:36driver's stuff then.
00:33:37They're doing the
00:33:37bottom.
00:33:37Well,
00:33:38we've got the number
00:33:38one in as well
00:33:39at the same time.
00:33:40That's not number one,
00:33:41the number eight,
00:33:42the race leader.
00:33:43Bringing Sarazan
00:33:44and Bradman at the
00:33:45same time.
00:33:45Is that always a good
00:33:47thing?
00:33:47Well,
00:33:47I would have thought
00:33:48that generally
00:33:48Persia would try and
00:33:49split them apart to be
00:33:50honest to try and keep
00:33:51it easier for them.
00:33:52But,
00:33:52you know,
00:33:52we don't know really
00:33:53what's going on.
00:33:54Maybe they've
00:33:54inadvertently come onto
00:33:55the same lap
00:33:56or maybe they needed to.
00:33:57You know,
00:33:57it's hard to determine
00:33:58what's going on down
00:33:58there.
00:33:59But you would have
00:34:00thought ideally they'd
00:34:00want to stagger them
00:34:01at least a lap apart
00:34:02so that they've got
00:34:03room should they need
00:34:04it.
00:34:04Well,
00:34:04particularly after what
00:34:05happened earlier with
00:34:06two of the Peugeots
00:34:08run by separate teams.
00:34:09Yes.
00:34:10Certainly they did do it
00:34:11right where the lead
00:34:12car in the pits,
00:34:13the lead car in the pits
00:34:14came in first so that
00:34:15at least he was able to
00:34:16go away easily and the
00:34:17second car could push
00:34:18off.
00:34:18if they'd done it the
00:34:19other way around then
00:34:19it would have been
00:34:20really difficult.
00:34:20Yes,
00:34:21absolutely right.
00:34:22So just to update you
00:34:23as well,
00:34:23the Essex Porsche
00:34:25Spider,
00:34:26Christian Poulsen,
00:34:27the world touring car
00:34:28driver on board that
00:34:29at the moment and then
00:34:30the other car,
00:34:32the Navi Go Porsche
00:34:33in the hands of
00:34:34Kunimoto-san.
00:34:36That's looking very,
00:34:38very good for them,
00:34:39isn't it?
00:34:39Kisuke Kunimoto,
00:34:40the man who won the
00:34:41Macau Grand Prix last
00:34:42year and has been a
00:34:43real star in Japan in
00:34:45Super GT and in
00:34:46Formula Nippon.
00:34:47Just having a look
00:34:47further down,
00:34:48see who's still
00:34:49leading GT1.
00:34:50It's GarcÃa in the
00:34:5263 Corvette and
00:34:54Raymond Rack,
00:34:54as we said,
00:34:55he's going to start
00:34:56pulling away a bit
00:34:56as Pierre Cappé
00:34:57takes a penalty.
00:34:58We're going to take
00:34:59a penalty.
00:34:59Quick break.
00:35:00We'll be back.
00:35:03Well,
00:35:04we were talking
00:35:04earlier about
00:35:05Hancock and their
00:35:06first appearance at
00:35:07Le Mans.
00:35:07They were lying third
00:35:08in class at that
00:35:09time,
00:35:09but this at the
00:35:10moment is Hancock's
00:35:12effort.
00:35:12Alan Simonson,
00:35:13the man who almost
00:35:14won the Le Mans
00:35:15series with Rob Bell
00:35:16last year,
00:35:17but then had to go
00:35:18off and do a race
00:35:19in Australia.
00:35:19Lost the title.
00:35:20Rob got it.
00:35:21But this car's got a
00:35:22puncture and they are
00:35:24going around the track
00:35:24there.
00:35:25And look,
00:35:25problem here.
00:35:26Is that the track
00:35:27breaking up, Liz?
00:35:27It is.
00:35:28It's breaking up on
00:35:29the outside of
00:35:30Mung San.
00:35:31This is going to be a
00:35:31major problem,
00:35:32isn't it?
00:35:32That is not good.
00:35:33I mean,
00:35:34definitely you wouldn't
00:35:34want to be running
00:35:35over that.
00:35:35And judging from the
00:35:36tire wear that we're
00:35:37seeing over that
00:35:38paint, you can see
00:35:39how much tire has
00:35:39been put down there.
00:35:40That's a spot where
00:35:41cars are going over
00:35:42the top.
00:35:43So that could
00:35:43potentially cause some
00:35:44problems, maybe some
00:35:45punctures.
00:35:46Certainly could be
00:35:46bad.
00:35:47Look at the lumps
00:35:47there.
00:35:48Might already be
00:35:49causing punctures.
00:35:49Someone throws
00:35:50one of those up,
00:35:51could go for a
00:35:51windscreen.
00:35:52Oh, no.
00:35:53That's big.
00:35:54Is this...
00:35:55And right in the
00:35:56middle of pit
00:35:56entrance.
00:35:57This is one of
00:35:58the Eureka cars
00:35:59again, isn't it?
00:36:00Who's out in the
00:36:00Eureka cars at the
00:36:01moment?
00:36:01That's going to be
00:36:02finished.
00:36:02That'll be
00:36:03finished, I reckon.
00:36:04Nothing left.
00:36:06It's not Eureka,
00:36:07is it?
00:36:07It's not Eureka,
00:36:08no.
00:36:08What have we got
00:36:09here?
00:36:09Did it go crazy?
00:36:10Oh, no.
00:36:10Oh, dear.
00:36:10Oh, dear.
00:36:11It is.
00:36:12Isn't it?
00:36:15No, it's...
00:36:16That's the radical.
00:36:18It's the radical.
00:36:18That's the radical.
00:36:19The Brookladdy car
00:36:19on Dunlop tyres,
00:36:20yeah.
00:36:21That shouldn't have
00:36:22happened, should it?
00:36:22Now, what happened
00:36:23here?
00:36:23The Lola just didn't
00:36:24give him any
00:36:24space, did it?
00:36:25That's really not
00:36:27nice.
00:36:27Who's in the 009 car?
00:36:29That was a 009 car,
00:36:29wasn't it?
00:36:30Yeah, that's Stuart
00:36:31Hall on board
00:36:32that car.
00:36:34That was a big
00:36:35mistake.
00:36:36Well, that's...
00:36:37Are we going to be
00:36:38in a safety car
00:36:39situation?
00:36:39I think that's
00:36:40on the back of
00:36:41Aston, I'm afraid,
00:36:42I think.
00:36:42That was Tim
00:36:43Greaves in the car.
00:36:44Tim making his
00:36:45return to Le Mans.
00:36:48I suppose it was
00:36:49Tim aiming to come
00:36:49into pit lane.
00:36:50He looked very
00:36:50slow.
00:36:51You know,
00:36:52normally you would
00:36:52push hard right
00:36:53up to the entrance
00:36:54of the pit lane.
00:36:55Oh, that's fantastic
00:36:55if he's moving.
00:36:56Well, look at that.
00:36:58Give me a push
00:36:58back, lad.
00:36:59Go on, Tim.
00:37:01So, Tim was
00:37:02just behind the
00:37:02Corvette.
00:37:03There's not much
00:37:03he could do,
00:37:04is there?
00:37:04And Aston just
00:37:05gave him no
00:37:06space.
00:37:06Maybe Stuart thought
00:37:08he was going in
00:37:08the pits, and
00:37:09when he got there,
00:37:09he was still there.
00:37:11I don't know.
00:37:11That or he was
00:37:12trying to not let
00:37:13the Audi come by.
00:37:13Did you see it
00:37:14looked like the Audi
00:37:15was trying to come
00:37:15past?
00:37:16Perhaps he was
00:37:16trying to keep
00:37:17him from doing
00:37:17that?
00:37:18I don't know
00:37:18if he just missed
00:37:19him entirely.
00:37:20Well, I think
00:37:20Stuart's going to
00:37:21be in trouble
00:37:21with the powers
00:37:22that be for that.
00:37:23Yeah, I think
00:37:24they will get
00:37:24some sort of
00:37:25penalty for that,
00:37:25I would have thought.
00:37:26I mean, unfortunately
00:37:27for Aston, it's
00:37:28the car that's
00:37:29had all the
00:37:29trouble, and it's
00:37:30down in 38th
00:37:30place, so it's
00:37:31not going to
00:37:32affect their
00:37:32ballgame.
00:37:33So the safety
00:37:34car out, as we
00:37:34said, and they're
00:37:35going to have to
00:37:35clear that up.
00:37:36Second safety
00:37:37car of the race,
00:37:38and that's being
00:37:39called at four
00:37:40hours and 38
00:37:41minutes on lap.
00:37:44Lap, lap, lap,
00:37:45this is really
00:37:47good effort on
00:37:48all this part
00:37:49here.
00:37:49He's coming.
00:37:50Luckily, that's
00:37:51happened to him
00:37:51right in front of
00:37:52pit lane.
00:37:53So if you're
00:37:54going to have an
00:37:54accident like that,
00:37:55pit lane is where
00:37:56you want it to
00:37:56happen.
00:37:56Yeah, and he's
00:37:57got the car back.
00:37:58Good lad.
00:38:00On almost two
00:38:01wheels, it looks
00:38:02like.
00:38:02Yeah, that car was
00:38:05running in the
00:38:06LMP2 class,
00:38:08looking down
00:38:0935th place.
00:38:10So, yellow is
00:38:15all around the
00:38:15circuit.
00:38:19So we're going
00:38:20to, having
00:38:21mistaken that car
00:38:22for the Raker
00:38:23car at first with
00:38:23the red and yellow
00:38:24colors, we are, I
00:38:25believe, going to
00:38:25go to Bruno
00:38:277 minutes.
00:38:28So we're looking
00:38:28at the 009 car,
00:38:30which is the car
00:38:31which perhaps
00:38:32unwittingly calls
00:38:33that.
00:38:33Let's go down.
00:38:34Bruno Sander is in
00:38:35the pits, waiting
00:38:35to talk to Justine.
00:38:37Bruno, it was
00:38:38hard to go after
00:38:39Stéphane.
00:38:40We had a little
00:38:41good problem, so
00:38:42how was your
00:38:42stand?
00:38:43It was alright.
00:38:44The car was
00:38:44fine.
00:38:45There was no
00:38:46after a match
00:38:48after Stéphane's
00:38:49crash, but I
00:38:50mean, I think the
00:38:52circuit is getting
00:38:53better for us.
00:38:54The car is quite
00:38:55consistent, so it's
00:38:56a long race.
00:38:57It happens to us,
00:38:58it can happen to
00:38:58anyone else, so we
00:38:59just keep on racing
00:39:00and do the best
00:39:01we can.
00:39:02Was it okay?
00:39:03You didn't have
00:39:03too much pressure
00:39:04after Stéphane going
00:39:05or?
00:39:05No, of course
00:39:06not.
00:39:06I was trying to
00:39:08save as much
00:39:08fuel as I could.
00:39:09It was actually
00:39:09good technique because
00:39:12we could do one more
00:39:13lap than normally in
00:39:14each stint, and this
00:39:15can count to one or
00:39:17two pit stops less
00:39:18towards the end of
00:39:19the race, so it's
00:39:20good.
00:39:21So your first two
00:39:22stints of Les 24
00:39:23Hors du Mans was
00:39:24good?
00:39:24Yeah, it was good.
00:39:26Obviously, it's better
00:39:27if you're overtaking
00:39:28everybody rather than
00:39:29being overtaken a few
00:39:29times, but nothing's
00:39:31perfect.
00:39:31Thank you, Bruno.
00:39:33So Stuart Hall then
00:39:34just saw the car again
00:39:36and what it actually
00:39:37looked like seeing
00:39:38another replay was that
00:39:39he saw the Audi
00:39:40current behind him,
00:39:41thought I'll get out
00:39:41of his way and just
00:39:42didn't take account of
00:39:43the fact that Tim
00:39:45Greaves, who of course
00:39:45is boss of Radical,
00:39:47that he was heading,
00:39:48he thought he was
00:39:49heading for the pit lane
00:39:49perhaps, and thought
00:39:50will he be gone when I
00:39:51get there?
00:39:51I think somehow he's
00:39:52just misjudged where
00:39:53Tim actually was and
00:39:54it's all gone a bit
00:39:55horribly wrong.
00:39:57Knowing Stuart, he is
00:39:58going to be so mortified
00:39:59this has happened
00:40:00because it's the last
00:40:01thing Stuart wants
00:40:02he knows Tim.
00:40:03I mean, they've raced
00:40:05together over the
00:40:05years and you just
00:40:07don't want that,
00:40:08whether he's a friend
00:40:09or not, it's awful.
00:40:11It's the first thing I
00:40:12was thinking, because
00:40:12Stuart will be so
00:40:13conscious of that and
00:40:14he's such a strong
00:40:15driver in himself and
00:40:16thoroughly deserves the
00:40:17drive he's got in that
00:40:18Aston, so I'm hoping
00:40:20that he'll just pull
00:40:20himself together and
00:40:21keep pushing hard and
00:40:22I suppose these things
00:40:24happen, but it is a
00:40:24shame.
00:40:25So this is a general
00:40:26signal course for
00:40:27everyone to come in
00:40:28just like in NASCAR
00:40:28racing, as soon as
00:40:29you've got a yellow
00:40:30just take advantage.
00:40:31Chris Parsons, Chris
00:40:33you did the Legends
00:40:34race this morning,
00:40:35you've been wandering
00:40:36around since then and
00:40:37looking nice and
00:40:38suntanned.
00:40:39So, what have you
00:40:41seen today?
00:40:42Oh, the people who've
00:40:44not been to Le Mans
00:40:44don't realise how many
00:40:46people attend this
00:40:47race.
00:40:48I think last year it
00:40:49was somewhere like
00:40:49270,000 people and
00:40:52the number of people
00:40:53in the campsites just
00:40:55enjoying themselves,
00:40:57buying ice creams,
00:40:58buying a lot of beer,
00:41:00some very red people.
00:41:02They reckon that there
00:41:03are 75,000 British
00:41:04here, most of them
00:41:06camping, and the
00:41:07amusing part is there
00:41:08are meant to be 45,000
00:41:10Danes.
00:41:1125,000.
00:41:1225,000 Danes, and they
00:41:14come in buses and they
00:41:16bring their tents and
00:41:18they have a party.
00:41:20In fact, Tom
00:41:20Christensen was asked
00:41:21it the other day at the
00:41:23Audi press conference,
00:41:24had he said that he'd
00:41:26been invited to the
00:41:27Danish campsite where
00:41:28there were 7,000 Danes
00:41:30camping, and he said,
00:41:31no, I didn't dare go
00:41:33there.
00:41:33It's too dangerous and
00:41:35wild.
00:41:35Of course, in years
00:41:37past, after Tom
00:41:38Christensen's won, I've
00:41:39been driving back to
00:41:41Calais, and I've come
00:41:42across campers with
00:41:43signs in the back
00:41:43saying, Christ is
00:41:44risen.
00:41:45I love that.
00:41:45It's great.
00:41:47But it's all very good
00:41:49natured.
00:41:50Lovely on the Friday
00:41:51because, as everybody
00:41:53knows, qualifying, it
00:41:55was on Thursday, testing
00:41:56on Wednesday.
00:41:58Friday's a free day.
00:41:59People enjoy themselves.
00:42:01Teams are working on
00:42:01the cars.
00:42:03Sponsors are having
00:42:03their do's, and the
00:42:06spectators enjoy
00:42:07themselves, and good
00:42:09fun, and a lot of
00:42:11beer is consumed.
00:42:12Now, Chris, you've got
00:42:13family in the city, and
00:42:14just watching Tim's very
00:42:17nasty moment again, but
00:42:18he's got the car back to
00:42:19the pits, but you've got
00:42:20family in the city, and
00:42:21they have said, though,
00:42:22that because there was
00:42:23no test day this year,
00:42:24the race lost a lot of
00:42:25publicity, and they were
00:42:27worried that perhaps the
00:42:28French attendance would
00:42:29be down a bit at the
00:42:30race.
00:42:30I don't know.
00:42:32There was certainly on
00:42:33Thursday night, there
00:42:34were a lot of French
00:42:35people, the paddock seemed
00:42:37to be absolutely jam-packed
00:42:39with people looking at
00:42:41the stalls and everything
00:42:42else.
00:42:44We'll see when the figures
00:42:45are actually released, but
00:42:47certainly the area will
00:42:49have lost quite a lot of
00:42:50income because, of course,
00:42:51if the teams are here for
00:42:52two and a half, three
00:42:54weeks, which they were with
00:42:55the test weekend, they had
00:42:57to stay in hotels, they
00:42:58spent money in the
00:43:00restaurants, they spend
00:43:01money everywhere, and
00:43:02that money will now only
00:43:04be spent in one week, not
00:43:06in three.
00:43:07What you're seeing here,
00:43:07you're seeing the second
00:43:08safety car train now
00:43:09coming into the pits, two
00:43:10safety cars called out
00:43:12here at Le Mans.
00:43:13They're going to rebuild
00:43:14that tire wall.
00:43:15That's the driver's safety
00:43:16has to become before
00:43:18anything else.
00:43:18Yeah, I mean, that'll
00:43:19hold the safety car above
00:43:20anything else, really, is
00:43:21they won't restart this
00:43:22race until they're
00:43:23absolutely confident that
00:43:24the safety wall is back as
00:43:25best as it can be,
00:43:26especially there, right on
00:43:27the entrance to pit lane.
00:43:29It's somewhere where you
00:43:29never know if that sort of
00:43:30thing can happen.
00:43:31It's where so many cars go
00:43:33through and in and out,
00:43:33you can't risk that.
00:43:35So Antonio Garcia just
00:43:36coming into the pits here,
00:43:37just a normal stop.
00:43:39So, yeah, everyone's getting
00:43:46fettled then.
00:43:47And Chris, just to continue
00:43:48the thread for a moment,
00:43:48if people haven't been to
00:43:49Le Mans before, the big
00:43:51change over the last two
00:43:52years is the trams, aren't
00:43:53they?
00:43:53It's making life so much
00:43:55easier from the city centre,
00:43:57the stations, out to the
00:43:58circuit.
00:43:58Yes, you could come to
00:44:01Le Mans quite easily by train
00:44:02now because the Eurostar to
00:44:06Paris and the TGV down from
00:44:08Paris, it takes about six
00:44:10hours in all, which is
00:44:11quicker than by car, and you
00:44:13can then get the tram out to
00:44:15the circuit.
00:44:16But, of course, the problem
00:44:17is where do you stay?
00:44:18All the hotels and guest
00:44:20houses are booked from here
00:44:22to Paris.
00:44:23So that's the difficult part
00:44:24about it, which is why so
00:44:25many people bring their
00:44:26tents.
00:44:27Yeah, or if they're not
00:44:27booked, of course, they want
00:44:28seven nights of money if you're
00:44:30only staying for three.
00:44:31So anyway, let's we'll come
00:44:33back to that theme in a
00:44:34little while.
00:44:35Just having a look here at
00:44:37the 82 car being fettled.
00:44:38We're going down to the
00:44:39pits.
00:44:45This is Mark Ross, Stan
00:44:46driver, one of the drivers
00:44:48of Brooklyn.
00:44:50He said, I just can't
00:44:51believe what we saw.
00:44:53I'm completely shocked.
00:44:54So is Tim.
00:45:01There was more violent than
00:45:03the usual sort of crash.
00:45:09I hope they're going to be
00:45:11penalized for that.
00:45:12It's just incredible what
00:45:13they did.
00:45:14It's true that it's still a
00:45:15little bit dangerous when
00:45:16there are differences like
00:45:17that, but it's true that we
00:45:18see the head cars who
00:45:19sometimes take risks
00:45:20inconsiderate, especially
00:45:21face to the vehicles.
00:45:22It's really dangerous.
00:45:23The different levels of
00:45:24cars, the faster cars should
00:45:27always have more respect for
00:45:29the slower cars.
00:45:36And when you're overtaking, the
00:45:37onus is on you to be careful.
00:45:39That's the rule here.
00:45:40So the driver obviously wasn't
00:45:49paying enough attention.
00:45:52Merci, et bonne course.
00:45:53Merci beaucoup.
00:45:54Car's pretty wrecked, but we're
00:45:56going to go back out, go
00:45:57faster and finish the race.
00:45:58Well, in comes the 0-0-9 car.
00:46:00I don't know if we haven't seen
00:46:01a penalty yet to Chris coming
00:46:03up for that, but I'm sure he
00:46:04will be.
00:46:05They've got to.
00:46:05You can't just ignore that.
00:46:06Yes, unfortunately, he caught
00:46:08him just on the front corner.
00:46:11I know it was probably his
00:46:12fault, but he only just caught
00:46:13the car and it just pitched
00:46:17him straight into the barriers,
00:46:19which was very unfortunate.
00:46:21And it looked a very fast
00:46:22accident.
00:46:24Yeah, here it is again then.
00:46:25Stuart Hall just quite unaware
00:46:27of the radicals there and bang,
00:46:28knocks him into the wall.
00:46:31I'm sure Liz just trying to get
00:46:32out of the way of the Audi that's
00:46:33coming up behind him.
00:46:34I think he was completely
00:46:35focused on the Audi and just
00:46:37misjudged how close the radical
00:46:39was and that he actually
00:46:40wasn't past him.
00:46:41I think that's part of it is he
00:46:42maybe thought he was past him
00:46:43and just misjudged it really.
00:46:45I think it was just a mistake.
00:46:46So Mark Rostand just saying to
00:46:47us that, you know, they've got
00:46:49to penalise the Aston, you
00:46:50know, he said the onus has to
00:46:52be on the faster car.
00:46:53I have to be honest in it.
00:46:55I mean, I love Stuart and I
00:46:56think he's a super driver, but
00:46:57I have to be honest, I do agree.
00:46:58I think he deserves, you know,
00:46:59some sort of penalty there for
00:47:00that because, I mean, it was a
00:47:02mistake and it caused a
00:47:03massive amount of damage to a
00:47:05car that was completely just
00:47:07out of any sync with them at
00:47:08all.
00:47:09He was just doing his own
00:47:09thing.
00:47:10He wasn't doing anything wrong.
00:47:11So I think there has to be a
00:47:12penalty there.
00:47:13We're under safety car still
00:47:14then at the moment and just
00:47:15looking down through the
00:47:16field list to see where the
00:47:17number 25 car is, the
00:47:20RML car.
00:47:24Having a good run this
00:47:25afternoon today, aren't there?
00:47:26Here we are, Chris Dyson on
00:47:28board that car at the moment
00:47:29in 22nd place and that car is
00:47:32running fourth at the moment in
00:47:34LMP2.
00:47:35And just coincidentally, as we're
00:47:36talking about Chris Dyson, who
00:47:38should come upstairs, but Mr.
00:47:39Imps for himself, Rob Dyson.
00:47:41Rob, good evening and great to
00:47:43have you here on Eurosport.
00:47:44Here we are.
00:47:44Gosh, it's here we are at Le Mans.
00:47:47What a phenomenal event.
00:47:49I did this race in 86 before they
00:47:52altered the track and put the
00:47:54canes in Mulsanne and the changes
00:47:57in the Dunlop curve was literally
00:48:00a curve and not a, it didn't have
00:48:03quite the switchback that it has
00:48:05now and you went down through the
00:48:06historic S's and came out onto the
00:48:09straightaway and it was one of the
00:48:12most interesting experiences I've
00:48:16ever had in my life and so I've
00:48:17been back twice, twice since, once
00:48:20when Chris did it in 2004 and then
00:48:22this year.
00:48:23And of course, Rob, you're the
00:48:24perfect person to ask the difference
00:48:25between the Rolex 24 at Daytona and
00:48:27the 24 hours at Le Mans.
00:48:30I think, I will tell you, I'm really
00:48:34unimpressed with the way people are
00:48:36handling their pit work in this track.
00:48:40I would say that this, the 24 hour
00:48:45Daytona is a harder race.
00:48:47It's got more traffic and it's a lot
00:48:48tighter.
00:48:49Here, there's enough places to air out
00:48:52and the only thing you have to do
00:48:54here is just be a little more
00:48:55patient, which doesn't seem to be
00:48:57what anybody's doing, but you know
00:48:59that you drive your own race.
00:49:01But I will tell you, I was, I'm so
00:49:03impressed with the pace that these
00:49:05guys run, positively in one respect
00:49:09but negatively in another.
00:49:10It seems that there's no sense of
00:49:11restraint.
00:49:12The first 45 minutes, you know, we
00:49:15saw cars getting all over the place.
00:49:18Then the accident with the two
00:49:19Peugeots in the pits, I mean, that
00:49:21was just inexcusable.
00:49:23I just couldn't believe it.
00:49:24Well, Liz, it shows all the planning
00:49:26you do and all the practice, you just
00:49:27cannot allow for a little mistake
00:49:30like that, can you?
00:49:31No, I mean, look how much, that's
00:49:32basically ruined their Le Mans, let's
00:49:33be honest.
00:49:34And something so silly as that, where
00:49:36they were just let out at the wrong
00:49:38time and unfortunately it is on the
00:49:40back of the guy who leads you out, as
00:49:42Rob would know, you know, that's your
00:49:43job.
00:49:44As a driver, you're looking at your
00:49:46crew chief to take you out.
00:49:47You're not expecting to need to look
00:49:48in your mirrors, you're expecting to
00:49:49be safe.
00:49:50And it wasn't a mystery, I think
00:49:53we're going back to action, huh?
00:49:54Yeah, we're going green.
00:49:56It wasn't a mystery that the car that
00:49:58was coming in was one of the team
00:49:59cars.
00:50:00So it's kind of like let him pull in
00:50:01and then let the other guy go out.
00:50:03Exactly.
00:50:03I mean, it was just, I agree with
00:50:05Liz, when you're a driver, you do
00:50:07exactly what you're told.
00:50:08And in this case, Pedro did exactly
00:50:11what he was told and unfortunately
00:50:14took him really out of contention.
00:50:16We're just going to get on to the pits
00:50:18and hear from someone from the
00:50:20Aston Martin 009 car.
00:50:28We asked Carol Primat about the
00:50:30problem with the other car.
00:50:31We just saw what happened.
00:50:33I wasn't in the car, but I saw that
00:50:35there was an Audi, a Peugeot,
00:50:37who arrived behind Stuart.
00:50:39And he was passing an LMP2.
00:50:42I think he's already overtaking LMP2 car.
00:50:48I think he saw the Audi from behind.
00:50:49He said Peugeot, I meant the Audi,
00:50:51which was coming up fast behind.
00:50:56So he tried to stay on that side,
00:50:59but hit the LMP2 car.
00:51:03It's just one of those race problems.
00:51:07Somebody moved.
00:51:07And we asked if they had any other
00:51:16problems apart from that.
00:51:19They said the first ship system wasn't too bad.
00:51:23They managed to start climbing the rankings
00:51:24again after alternator problems.
00:51:26Yeah, we didn't, things didn't work out for me
00:51:38as I quite wanted.
00:51:39And then it's been a hard race for us.
00:51:44The other two Aston's very, very fast.
00:51:52We tried to keep all three cars together,
00:51:54but it's trying to keep the rhythm
00:51:59since the start of the race.
00:52:04Still a long, long way to go.
00:52:08Got a job to do.
00:52:11I don't think we're going to see a podium
00:52:13at the end.
00:52:13That's a bit of understatement, Rob,
00:52:15I think, isn't it?
00:52:15That car is at the moment way,
00:52:18way down the order.
00:52:19They're running in 37th place.
00:52:22They haven't got a hope, have they?
00:52:23It's a bit ambitious, though.
00:52:25But, you know, I love Harold's optimism.
00:52:27I have to give him credit for that.
00:52:28So, yeah, way to look on the bright side of that.
00:52:31That's the way you have to be in racing.
00:52:33If you're not, if you don't think you can win the race
00:52:36until the checkered flag drops,
00:52:38then you're in the wrong line of work.
00:52:39It's a remarkable discipline that you have to have.
00:52:46That it's got to be you're ready to go
00:52:47and you're going to participate.
00:52:49And, by golly, nobody's won the race yet.
00:52:51And you give it as hard a go as you can.
00:52:54And that's the way we've always done it.
00:52:56And it pays off often enough
00:52:59that you always keep coming back.
00:53:01That's the key.
00:53:02Well, it's brought you enough success, hasn't it?
00:53:03And I think that attitude has definitely proved itself
00:53:05to be the right one for your team.
00:53:06Well, you've got to have it with the guys, too.
00:53:09The guys all have to have a never give up,
00:53:13a never quit kind of attitude.
00:53:15And if something gets untoward,
00:53:17you've got to repair it and get back out there.
00:53:19And that's how we've won several championships
00:53:21because every race is part of a continuum.
00:53:23Although this event is clearly a head and shoulders
00:53:27above all of them.
00:53:28I mean, it's just a remarkable, you know,
00:53:31there are two or three great races on the calendar.
00:53:34And this is clearly one of them.
00:53:37I think what took us by surprise a little bit, Rob,
00:53:39is that Chris is only his second Le Mans.
00:53:42It feels like he's been coming for years.
00:53:44Yeah, I think what was interesting
00:53:46is he did a couple of races in Europe.
00:53:48He came over and did a race at Silverstone.
00:53:51I think he did one at Spa as well.
00:53:53And did fairly well, actually.
00:53:55And I don't know why he...
00:53:59This was a deal that he's doing.
00:54:03Chris is doing the deal with Mazda.
00:54:05And they brought him over on this
00:54:06as part of our continuum of our Mazda project.
00:54:10So he was able...
00:54:11They selected him to come on over and race with Ray,
00:54:13who's a terrific competitor and a great car owner
00:54:16with a great team.
00:54:18And so that created the opportunity for Chris to come back.
00:54:22But I was surprised that in 2004,
00:54:24he did a great job with the Ann Lammers.
00:54:27Finished seventh, highest finishing American.
00:54:29And there aren't very many Americans here.
00:54:31I was really surprised.
00:54:32I looked down the entry list,
00:54:34and there weren't as many Yanks as there...
00:54:37I think there normally is.
00:54:39I was kind of surprised.
00:54:40But the key to it is
00:54:43that he does a very disciplined job here
00:54:46and doesn't get caught up in it.
00:54:47And that's the key to this race.
00:54:50Wouldn't you say, Liz?
00:54:51Oh, absolutely.
00:54:52I think you just have to keep your head around it.
00:54:53And, you know, it's patience.
00:54:55You have to be patient here
00:54:56and realize that if you're going to lose a couple seconds,
00:54:59you know, to wait that minute longer
00:55:01to pass the slower car on the straight where it's safe,
00:55:04if you're not sure if they've seen you,
00:55:05then that's better than spending 45 minutes in the pits.
00:55:08When I did the race in 86,
00:55:11with Richard Lloyd,
00:55:14and it was a terrific experience,
00:55:15Reinhold Joost came up to me,
00:55:17and I had met him on a couple of occasions.
00:55:20And Reinhold Joost came up to me,
00:55:22and I said,
00:55:23look, you've done this race a lot of times.
00:55:25What's the biggest hint you can give me?
00:55:27And he said,
00:55:28stay one foot away from the curbs.
00:55:32Stay one foot away from the curbs.
00:55:35Here we go.
00:55:36Audi in the garage.
00:55:37This is not going to be good for them.
00:55:39Which number is it?
00:55:40Number three car.
00:55:41Number three.
00:55:41Graham Goodwin from DailySportsCar.com
00:55:43has just popped in,
00:55:44and thank you very much,
00:55:45Graham,
00:55:45for that information.
00:55:46And as we've told you so many times before,
00:55:48get all the race information,
00:55:50latest news on DSC.com,
00:55:51and it's a great sight.
00:55:54They've not had the easiest race
00:55:55as a number three car.
00:55:56They've had a couple problems already.
00:55:57Graham's just added,
00:55:58they've had a slow lap,
00:55:59slow in lap.
00:56:00So this is the number three car,
00:56:01which is,
00:56:01again,
00:56:02it's the one that's had the bad luck,
00:56:04isn't it?
00:56:04So far,
00:56:05it's like the Aston Martins.
00:56:07That last lap was
00:56:08the five minutes zero six,
00:56:11and, yeah,
00:56:11it's not looking good,
00:56:12is it?
00:56:13Again,
00:56:13Rob,
00:56:13what we've picked up tonight a lot
00:56:16is that this new design of the Audi,
00:56:17the front nose,
00:56:18seems to be collecting any rubbish
00:56:20that's around the circuit.
00:56:21Yeah,
00:56:21I will admit,
00:56:22it's a terribly unique
00:56:24kind of front-end treatment.
00:56:26It reminded me of the Panos
00:56:27a little bit.
00:56:30And I will tell you
00:56:32that when they raced at Sebring,
00:56:34the car was very impressive,
00:56:35but they did apparently
00:56:37have a little,
00:56:38some problems with refuse
00:56:40and things getting in the front end.
00:56:41So it's,
00:56:42it's something that I guess
00:56:44they figured either
00:56:44wasn't going to be a problem
00:56:46or that they could get around it somehow.
00:56:47And of course,
00:56:48the more rubbish you get in,
00:56:48the more cooling problems
00:56:49you're going to have.
00:56:50And we're also hearing
00:56:51that they have got cooling problems.
00:56:53Absolutely.
00:56:53And they run,
00:56:54they are running,
00:56:55as everybody is,
00:56:56they're running these,
00:56:56these engines
00:56:57and these cars so hard
00:56:59that any slight variation
00:57:03in the operating temperatures
00:57:04could cause some real problems.
00:57:06One of which can be
00:57:06that you lose power,
00:57:07but the other thing is,
00:57:08is that you lose reliability as well.
00:57:10Right.
00:57:10Well,
00:57:10just as we're talking there,
00:57:11we've just seen
00:57:12for the first time in this race
00:57:13a change in the LMP2 lead
00:57:15and it's,
00:57:16Kunimoto-san
00:57:17has just gone cast
00:57:18Christian Poulsen.
00:57:19How about that?
00:57:20And that is after 80 laps of racing,
00:57:22that first change.
00:57:25Yeah,
00:57:26they've just changed.
00:57:26Here they are.
00:57:27Yep.
00:57:27So the Japanese car
00:57:29in front at the moment.
00:57:31So,
00:57:31Rob,
00:57:32you were racing these cars
00:57:33last year,
00:57:35the Dyson Porsches.
00:57:36You've made the change
00:57:37to Lola Mazda.
00:57:39Why?
00:57:42Well,
00:57:42there were several,
00:57:43several reasons.
00:57:45Several,
00:57:46several reasons.
00:57:48They came to us
00:57:50and offered,
00:57:51oop.
00:57:52Just look at the replay.
00:57:53I think we're just going to
00:57:54go to the pits quickly
00:57:55with an interview
00:57:56with Alexander Prima.
00:57:57Oh,
00:57:58there you go.
00:57:59Alex,
00:58:00you had a little problem
00:58:01at the beginning of the relay,
00:58:02what was going on exactly?
00:58:04Alex,
00:58:05problems with the car,
00:58:07the front end.
00:58:09He said,
00:58:12yeah,
00:58:12I'm fighting with the Aston Martin.
00:58:15I had big problems
00:58:16with vibrations
00:58:16coming from the front.
00:58:20I had problems
00:58:20with the steering as well.
00:58:26I tried to take
00:58:26the curve earlier.
00:58:28I wasn't fighting hard enough
00:58:29and the car was too powerful
00:58:32and so I just went straight on.
00:58:41And now we've got turbo-charger
00:58:44problems.
00:58:48The car wasn't pushing
00:58:49very hard.
00:58:51It wasn't fast enough.
00:58:58I've hurt my neck
00:58:59a little bit,
00:58:59but it's fine now.
00:59:06Yeah,
00:59:06it's the front vibration.
00:59:07That's why we're in.
00:59:09So,
00:59:09turbo-charger problems,
00:59:10vibration problems.
00:59:11We heard earlier
00:59:12after we went off
00:59:12to Indianapolis
00:59:13that from Roman Dumas
00:59:15that he had been reporting
00:59:17some power-steering problems
00:59:18and Liz,
00:59:19with all sorts of conjecture
00:59:20about that,
00:59:21Audi said
00:59:22there's nothing wrong
00:59:23with the car at all.
00:59:24Well,
00:59:24I think it basically
00:59:25is what we originally
00:59:26thought it was
00:59:26in saying that
00:59:27his power-steering
00:59:28had just gone that bit more
00:59:30so when he tried
00:59:31to take the curve,
00:59:32it's an extremely fast corner
00:59:33that right-hand turn
00:59:34and huge G-force
00:59:35in these cars
00:59:36and would be very hard
00:59:37to hold without power-steering.
00:59:38So,
00:59:38I think it is
00:59:39as we assume,
00:59:40at least from what he's saying,
00:59:41is that it just basically
00:59:42was that bit too much.
00:59:43The other thing is
00:59:44is that I noticed
00:59:45on the TV
00:59:47that they were looking
00:59:48underneath the front end
00:59:50of the car
00:59:51to make sure
00:59:51that there wasn't
00:59:52any body work.
00:59:53The front floor
00:59:53might have been fluttering
00:59:54a little.
00:59:55That could cause
00:59:55some real vibration problems.
00:59:57Well,
00:59:58please stay with us
00:59:58and we'll come back
00:59:59to your IMSA program
01:00:00in a minute.
01:00:02We're just going to
01:00:03take a short break
01:00:04and get back
01:00:04after these messages.
01:00:08You're back live
01:00:10on Eurosport.
01:00:11Welcome back.
01:00:12Long 24 hours
01:00:13just come up
01:00:15to the 5-hour mark
01:00:1720, 100,
01:00:188 o'clock in the evening
01:00:19here in West France.
01:00:20A beautiful evening,
01:00:21very high cloud,
01:00:22a very light breeze,
01:00:23been warm all day.
01:00:24This is absolutely
01:00:24perfect racing conditions
01:00:26and hopefully that cloud
01:00:27signals there
01:00:28should not be any rain tonight
01:00:30although the meteor
01:00:30from Peugeot
01:00:32and from Audi
01:00:32has been calling
01:00:33for rain
01:00:34at perhaps 1 o'clock
01:00:35or 2 o'clock
01:00:36tomorrow afternoon
01:00:37but that could be
01:00:38a movable feast.
01:00:39We've got Rob Dyson
01:00:40with us this holiday,
01:00:41myself, Mark Cole
01:00:41and Rob,
01:00:42just before the break
01:00:43we were starting
01:00:43to ask you
01:00:44about your ALMS program
01:00:46and why you changed
01:00:47from Porsche
01:00:48to Lola Mazda.
01:00:50Well,
01:00:50Lola Mazda
01:00:51was an opportunity
01:00:52that came to us.
01:00:54They contacted Chris
01:00:56early on
01:00:56in the season
01:00:57last season
01:00:58and said
01:00:59we've got
01:00:59a program here
01:01:01and we're just wondering
01:01:02if Dyson Racing
01:01:03would want to
01:01:03participate with us
01:01:05and one conversation
01:01:06led to another
01:01:07and it led to another
01:01:08and the association
01:01:09with Mazda
01:01:10going back
01:01:11working with Lola
01:01:12again has always
01:01:13been good.
01:01:13We had many,
01:01:15many good years
01:01:15working with Lola
01:01:16and with BP
01:01:18and the association
01:01:20of the three
01:01:21has been just
01:01:21absolutely terrific
01:01:22and it's been a
01:01:23and we've got
01:01:25the Michelin tires
01:01:26and working with
01:01:28the AER chaps
01:01:30and it's a great
01:01:32package
01:01:32and we're learning
01:01:33how to run it
01:01:34and the car is good
01:01:35they look great
01:01:36and the sponsors
01:01:37are happy
01:01:38and they're happy
01:01:39so we're happy
01:01:40and it's been
01:01:41a great experience.
01:01:42The Mazda folks
01:01:43it's top to bottom
01:01:45commitment
01:01:46from Japan
01:01:48all the way down
01:01:49to the individual
01:01:50dealers
01:01:50they're remarkably
01:01:51switched on
01:01:52car company
01:01:53and they are
01:01:54pure racers
01:01:56they just love it.
01:01:57Great to hear that
01:01:57because we had
01:01:58John Doonan
01:01:58on Thursday night
01:02:00singing your praises
01:02:01saying what a great
01:02:01team you were
01:02:02to work with
01:02:02so it's a
01:02:03mutual admiration
01:02:04win-win deal
01:02:05well we found
01:02:06that you know
01:02:08they wanted a team
01:02:10that took it seriously
01:02:11and could execute
01:02:13and we wanted
01:02:14some people
01:02:15that were committed
01:02:16and wanted to
01:02:17see us execute
01:02:17and that's the way
01:02:18it worked out.
01:02:19The word was
01:02:19that the Porsche
01:02:20Spyder was a very
01:02:21complex, very difficult
01:02:22car to set up
01:02:23was that your experience?
01:02:25Among others
01:02:25yes.
01:02:28We're very happy
01:02:30with our
01:02:31with the Dyson Racing
01:02:33Mazda Lola
01:02:33BP combination
01:02:35it's very very
01:02:36it's been a great
01:02:37great experience
01:02:38and of course
01:02:39Mazda is the only
01:02:40Japanese market
01:02:41who have ever won
01:02:42the Le Mans 24 hours
01:02:43so I think
01:02:43it's a really big thing
01:02:44for them to be here
01:02:45with such an influence
01:02:46this year
01:02:47it's the biggest influence
01:02:48Mazda's had for many
01:02:49many years I believe
01:02:50with so many Mazda Lolas
01:02:51involved
01:02:52so I think this is
01:02:53a road that they're
01:02:54hoping to go down
01:02:55again and hopefully
01:02:56work their way up
01:02:57to the top and have
01:02:58another win
01:02:58yeah
01:02:59let's just go back
01:03:01to the AAR engines
01:03:02the AAR built Mazda
01:03:05engines
01:03:05fuel problems
01:03:06at the first two
01:03:07Le Mans series races
01:03:08we've talked to AAR
01:03:09and they've said
01:03:10they believe they've
01:03:11managed to get over
01:03:11for Le Mans
01:03:12we've had no engine
01:03:13failures yet
01:03:14have we
01:03:14so hopefully
01:03:16that's going to be
01:03:16behind us
01:03:17well I can't reflect
01:03:19on the European races
01:03:20all I can tell you
01:03:21is that we had
01:03:22a couple of electrical
01:03:23problems at Sebring
01:03:24that hit both cars
01:03:25within about 15 minutes
01:03:27that we just couldn't
01:03:27correct
01:03:28but after that
01:03:29all of our racing
01:03:30has been rock solid
01:03:31with the AAR
01:03:32with no
01:03:33with the AAR Mazda
01:03:35engines
01:03:35with no fuel pressure
01:03:36problems
01:03:37or even any power
01:03:38problems
01:03:38our deal has just
01:03:39been making sure
01:03:40that we get the
01:03:40chassis and the
01:03:41engine combination
01:03:42working correctly
01:03:43yeah your fuel spec
01:03:43is different of course
01:03:44isn't it
01:03:45it's very different
01:03:46it's very different
01:03:47and our restrictor
01:03:47size a little bit
01:03:48different
01:03:48but either one of
01:03:49them shouldn't
01:03:50cause any problems
01:03:51but I will tell you
01:03:52that the fuel
01:03:54that they use
01:03:55here in Europe
01:03:55other than the
01:03:57diesel cars
01:03:58is not as good
01:03:59as what we have
01:04:00in the US
01:04:00and I don't know
01:04:02why they don't
01:04:03I mean it just
01:04:03seems to me
01:04:04that it's all science
01:04:05I mean you get
01:04:05the same fuel
01:04:06worldwide
01:04:07it just strikes me
01:04:08that they should
01:04:09do that
01:04:09if or nothing else
01:04:10but you have
01:04:11engine builders
01:04:12that work on
01:04:13both sides of it
01:04:14and I know
01:04:14with Dyson Racing
01:04:15when we run
01:04:16we should be running
01:04:17for instance
01:04:18if we were to
01:04:18come over here
01:04:19and run this race
01:04:20to have to adjust
01:04:21to a different octane rating
01:04:23or some kind of
01:04:23different chemistry
01:04:24in the fuel
01:04:25puts us at a disadvantage
01:04:27where the diesel cars
01:04:28are using the same fuel
01:04:29at every race
01:04:30wherever they go
01:04:31it just strikes me
01:04:32that it's a
01:04:33it's a
01:04:33it's a
01:04:34it's a
01:04:34it's a
01:04:35it's a
01:04:35disconnect
01:04:38that I think
01:04:39that they shouldn't have
01:04:40there becomes
01:04:41a huge compromise
01:04:42that a team has to do
01:04:44when they go
01:04:44even from Europe
01:04:46to America
01:04:46I know last year
01:04:47I raced with creation
01:04:48at Petit Limon
01:04:49Laguna Seca
01:04:50and there was a lot of changes
01:04:51they had to make
01:04:52to accommodate
01:04:52the completely different fuel
01:04:54that goes on in America
01:04:55and they were able to do that
01:04:56but it did take quite a while
01:04:57so I think that is something
01:04:59that I completely agree with you
01:05:01I think they need to have
01:05:02you know
01:05:03a continuance across both sectors
01:05:04it can't just be diesel
01:05:05it has to work for everybody
01:05:07so that it's more
01:05:08appealing to come across
01:05:10well I think it makes
01:05:11it's just a complication
01:05:12you don't need
01:05:13yeah we're just going back
01:05:13down to the pits
01:05:14to Justine
01:05:15Olivier Canel
01:05:17motorsport director of Peugeot
01:05:19justine asked him
01:05:26after five hours
01:05:27he's still got two cars
01:05:28out front
01:05:29yeah it's fine
01:05:33but the two hours
01:05:36came back on us
01:05:37after the safety car
01:05:38it's the third car that's had the problems
01:05:49and that's supposed to be the hair
01:05:51everything's fine at the moment
01:05:58so we're going to have two cars
01:06:00and the Peugeot Pescarola
01:06:02is having cars
01:06:03the problems of car number three
01:06:05so
01:06:05and the Peugeot Pescarola is coming back as well
01:06:09so anything's possible
01:06:10are you confident about reliability
01:06:16yeah we made separate simulations
01:06:21but that's Le Mans
01:06:26that's race
01:06:28that's car racing
01:06:29but we're ready
01:06:30well very uh
01:06:32very bold words
01:06:33ah dear oh dear
01:06:34just as we're saying that
01:06:35the IMSA performance
01:06:36Matmut car comes in
01:06:37is that the lead car
01:06:38was the lead car
01:06:39Raymond Rack
01:06:41doing such a good job this afternoon
01:06:43just checking quickly
01:06:44I don't
01:06:44but it can't be
01:06:45because he's just done
01:06:46one of his fastest sectors again
01:06:47it's the other car
01:06:49isn't it
01:06:49the other one
01:06:50just being pushed into the pits
01:06:51there
01:06:52well Rob Dyson
01:06:52thank you very much
01:06:53for joining us tonight
01:06:54there's anything else
01:06:54you want to raise it Rob
01:06:56no but I
01:06:57I'm honored to be here
01:06:59and thanks for the invite
01:07:00to come up
01:07:00and I will tell you
01:07:02that this is a
01:07:03this is an amazing event
01:07:05it's one of these things
01:07:06that if anybody is in sports cars
01:07:08or has any interest in sports cars
01:07:10you have to see this race
01:07:11you have to come and experience it
01:07:13and then in addition to that
01:07:14if you're a participant
01:07:15in sports car racing
01:07:16do whatever you can
01:07:18to actually do this race
01:07:20at least once
01:07:21well I was with you
01:07:22when you won at Daytona
01:07:23I remember you never went to bed
01:07:24you just stayed up the whole time
01:07:26that's exactly right
01:07:26you're doing that tonight
01:07:27I don't
01:07:28well I might
01:07:29I might
01:07:30depends how my boy's doing
01:07:31thank you everybody
01:07:32excellent
01:07:33thanks a lot Rob
01:07:33well
01:07:36and while Rob's talking
01:07:38we have mentioned Graham Goodwin
01:07:39from Daily Sports Car
01:07:40a couple of times
01:07:40Graham's going to come
01:07:41and give us his take on
01:07:42how the racer is going
01:07:43the great race
01:07:44and
01:07:44so Rob going back
01:07:49for the long long night
01:07:50shorter night than Daytona
01:07:51of course
01:07:52that's one of the good things
01:07:53it's about
01:07:53five hours here
01:07:55if the weather's fine
01:07:55and it's full
01:07:5612 hours in Daytona
01:07:57Graham good to have you
01:07:58with us
01:07:58and you are really
01:08:00the world's leading
01:08:02authority
01:08:02your website
01:08:03dailysportscar.com
01:08:05on sports car racing
01:08:06thank you for all the work
01:08:07you've done over the last
01:08:08few weeks
01:08:08you've made our job
01:08:09that much easier
01:08:09with your really
01:08:11really impressive
01:08:11previews
01:08:13you and Mark Housen
01:08:14doing a great great job
01:08:15but just first
01:08:16tell us
01:08:16how's Graham Cratton
01:08:17our friend Graham
01:08:18Malcolm will be listening
01:08:19Malcolm is just back
01:08:23from studying himself
01:08:24in New York
01:08:24he'll be listening in
01:08:25I'm sure
01:08:25and lots of good wishes
01:08:27from Alc
01:08:28he's not missed
01:08:30many of these
01:08:30in the last
01:08:31what's
01:08:31it probably seems
01:08:32in like 60 or 70 years
01:08:33but this is what he's missed
01:08:35he'll be listening in
01:08:36and watching in
01:08:37what a fabulous race
01:08:38we're having
01:08:38it's quite amazing
01:08:40you know
01:08:40you will get people
01:08:41that tell you
01:08:41that endurance racing
01:08:42is dull
01:08:42and you can't
01:08:43actually promote
01:08:44endurance racing
01:08:44well I think
01:08:45there's been a quarter
01:08:45of a million people
01:08:46out there in the sunshine
01:08:47that would disagree
01:08:47with them
01:08:48fabulous racing
01:08:49I can barely believe
01:08:50it's been what
01:08:50nearly
01:08:50is it what
01:08:51how many hours
01:08:53are we in there
01:08:53almost 6 I think
01:08:54good grief
01:08:55coming on that
01:08:55it's amazing
01:08:57it's 5 hours
01:08:58and 12 minutes
01:08:59but what we have noticed
01:09:00Graham
01:09:01Peugeot are 4 stinting
01:09:02and they're running
01:09:03just almost as fast
01:09:04on their 4th stint
01:09:06on the same set of tyres
01:09:07as on their 1st stint
01:09:08it's a pretty incredible
01:09:09display isn't it
01:09:10and what we've got to
01:09:11wait and see
01:09:11is whether or not
01:09:13they're going to
01:09:14solve the problems
01:09:15they've had in
01:09:16previous years here
01:09:17reliability is one of them
01:09:18and let's be blunt
01:09:19it's not been great
01:09:20in the pits either
01:09:21it's better
01:09:22on both those counts
01:09:23with the disarromable
01:09:25exception of what
01:09:25this was talking about
01:09:26earlier
01:09:26the incident between
01:09:27the 7 and the 17 car
01:09:28watching at the moment
01:09:30a bit of an incident
01:09:30there with the 25 car
01:09:33yeah Rob
01:09:34Chris Dyson
01:09:34on board that car
01:09:35Chris getting a bit
01:09:36nerfed by the
01:09:37the Hancock
01:09:38tired Ferrari there
01:09:41I thought you got a bit
01:09:41sandwiched in there
01:09:42by two GT cars
01:09:43Rob just put his head
01:09:45in his hands
01:09:46at that point
01:09:47they've all gone away
01:09:48with that
01:09:49but it's been a fantastic race
01:09:51what we're waiting
01:09:51to find out as well
01:09:52is will some of those
01:09:53kind of
01:09:54well let's call them
01:09:55new car problems
01:09:55if it was a new car
01:09:56for two years
01:09:57if it was a new car
01:09:57problem
01:09:58whether or not Audi
01:09:58are now going to
01:09:59inherit some of those
01:10:00without the benefit
01:10:01of having the longer
01:10:03race programme
01:10:04before Le Mans
01:10:05that Audi have
01:10:06traditionally had
01:10:06this is a brand new car
01:10:08it's a completely
01:10:08different car
01:10:09more or less
01:10:10everything else
01:10:10on the grid
01:10:11in P1 and P2
01:10:12is an evolution
01:10:12of something we've
01:10:13seen before
01:10:13this isn't
01:10:14the R15 is a
01:10:15revolutionary car
01:10:16and they've got
01:10:17problems
01:10:18it's certainly got
01:10:19problems
01:10:19mostly seeming to be
01:10:21about the front end
01:10:21of the car
01:10:22but it's like a Hoover
01:10:23it seems to be
01:10:24sucking everything in
01:10:25I think that's part of it
01:10:26and you know
01:10:27I think we were hearing
01:10:28earlier in your commentary
01:10:29that there's rumours
01:10:30of issues with turbos
01:10:31it's not the first time
01:10:32I've heard that
01:10:33this weekend
01:10:33Audi clearly
01:10:34are not going to be
01:10:35terrifically
01:10:35kind of open about
01:10:37telling exactly
01:10:37what's wrong with the cars
01:10:38but the three cars
01:10:39had a bit of a
01:10:39touring time
01:10:40what we are getting
01:10:42at the moment
01:10:42is a wonderful
01:10:44four car battle
01:10:45with those two
01:10:46Aston Martins
01:10:46hanging on in there
01:10:47just in case we get
01:10:48other problems ahead
01:10:50which we undoubtedly
01:10:51will
01:10:51because that's Le Mans
01:10:52six factory cars
01:10:55have been out front
01:10:56well it's seven now
01:10:57because the Pagano Peugeot
01:11:00we call it a factory car
01:11:01can we?
01:11:01the Pascorello Peugeot
01:11:02I think we probably
01:11:02know it
01:11:03factory blessed
01:11:04factory blessed
01:11:05yeah
01:11:05funnily enough
01:11:06I was saying earlier
01:11:07I went up to Henri
01:11:08before the race
01:11:08and said Henri
01:11:09I hope you can beat
01:11:10the Peugeot
01:11:11as he said
01:11:11we are Peugeot
01:11:12how's that for the
01:11:14company man?
01:11:15I think Henri
01:11:15would be amazed
01:11:17if he realised
01:11:18actually how much
01:11:20support there was
01:11:20on the spectator banks
01:11:22on your forums
01:11:23people listening at home
01:11:24Henri Pascorello
01:11:26is part of the history
01:11:26of this race
01:11:27and always will be
01:11:28but he's part of
01:11:28the living history
01:11:29of this race
01:11:29and I think millions
01:11:31of people in France
01:11:32and beyond
01:11:32would actually love
01:11:33to see Henri
01:11:34win this race
01:11:35that would be a
01:11:35fairytale result
01:11:36I think
01:11:37bearing in mind
01:11:38all the torrid nature
01:11:40of the politics
01:11:40around diesel
01:11:41against petrol
01:11:42over the last
01:11:43three, four years
01:11:44for a Pascorello
01:11:46run Peugeot
01:11:47and a diesel at that
01:11:48to actually win this race
01:11:50would be
01:11:50well that would be
01:11:51a laugh wouldn't it
01:11:52let's face it
01:11:52oh yeah
01:11:53I'd love to see him
01:11:54win I think
01:11:54that'd be fantastic
01:11:55would Peugeot be
01:11:56too worried
01:11:56which one's
01:11:57one would it
01:11:58bother them
01:11:59look at it
01:12:00from Peugeot's
01:12:00point of view
01:12:01it's not by accident
01:12:02they've placed a car
01:12:03with a team
01:12:03that they know
01:12:03is capable of
01:12:04actually getting a car
01:12:06to the finish
01:12:06and onto the podium
01:12:07here
01:12:07they need strength
01:12:09in depth
01:12:09if things do go wrong
01:12:10having four
01:12:11competitive Peugeots
01:12:12is better than
01:12:13having three
01:12:13and at the end
01:12:14of the day
01:12:15their advertising
01:12:16their marketing
01:12:17can still say
01:12:17Peugeot win Le Mans
01:12:18yeah
01:12:19that's the number
01:12:19seven Peugeot
01:12:20we're watching
01:12:20Pedro Lamy on board
01:12:22the one that's
01:12:22coming back
01:12:23almost coming back
01:12:23from the grave
01:12:24isn't it
01:12:24absolutely wrecked
01:12:26in that first
01:12:27hour of the race
01:12:27you see the way
01:12:28he went past
01:12:29the Aston Martin
01:12:29oh that's what
01:12:30I was just noticing
01:12:31like it was an LMP2
01:12:33yeah extraordinary
01:12:34and that's with
01:12:35Jan Cherus in it
01:12:35that's not a slow car
01:12:37he's a quick driver
01:12:38now he's thinking
01:12:38to gobble up the Audi
01:12:39instead of him
01:12:39the Aston has just passed
01:12:40well I think
01:12:42he'll be a man
01:12:43on a mission
01:12:43now he'll be told
01:12:44to absolutely push
01:12:45no matter what
01:12:46from Peugeot
01:12:46and that's what
01:12:47they'll be doing
01:12:47and that accident
01:12:48there's no fault
01:12:49of Pedro's
01:12:50but we did talk
01:12:51earlier about
01:12:51to Hugh Chamberlain
01:12:52particularly saying
01:12:53why having had that
01:12:54did they let the car
01:12:55go back out
01:12:56why not stop it
01:12:56there and then
01:12:57and then wheel it back
01:12:58well I think
01:12:59I was listening
01:13:00to what Liz
01:13:00was saying earlier
01:13:01and Liz is absolutely
01:13:02right as a driver
01:13:03in that kind of situation
01:13:03you're completely reliant
01:13:05on the information
01:13:05you're getting
01:13:06from your pit crew
01:13:06and I know
01:13:07what the pit crew
01:13:07and to a lesser extent
01:13:09the drivers have been saying
01:13:09and Henri said it too
01:13:10is that it was actually
01:13:11to do with the photographers
01:13:12in the line of sight
01:13:14well that's fine
01:13:15but come on
01:13:16this is Le Mans
01:13:16this is a factory
01:13:18blessed team
01:13:18do you want the publicity
01:13:19or don't you
01:13:20and if you want the publicity
01:13:21either manage that better
01:13:23in the pit lane
01:13:24or whatever
01:13:25but it's an inexcusable accident
01:13:27that could have been
01:13:27so so much worse
01:13:28and I know there are
01:13:29people in the way
01:13:30but I'm sorry
01:13:30it's a massive race car
01:13:32with a roof on it
01:13:32and everything
01:13:33you're not going to miss it
01:13:34are you
01:13:34plus they're together
01:13:36they're joined in
01:13:37in a team
01:13:37they were meant to be
01:13:38a lap apart
01:13:39I know that
01:13:40but surely they would have
01:13:41some knowledge together
01:13:42of who was coming in
01:13:43when
01:13:44I just
01:13:44or they should have
01:13:46if they didn't
01:13:46it was I think
01:13:48pretty poor pit management
01:13:49and let's hope
01:13:50they've learned that lesson
01:13:51it's a very hard lesson
01:13:52to learn
01:13:52it's put one of the cars
01:13:53out of contention
01:13:54for the moment at least
01:13:55but fighting back
01:13:57and fighting back hard
01:13:58331 that last time around
01:14:00from Pedro Larmi
01:14:00which is well up
01:14:02with the leading pace
01:14:03but
01:14:03it didn't seem to be
01:14:05just symptomatic
01:14:06of the woes
01:14:07that Peugeot have had
01:14:07here in the last couple of years
01:14:08and not just here
01:14:09it does seem that
01:14:10they're actually able
01:14:11to throw it away
01:14:12all too easily
01:14:12and you know
01:14:13genuinely
01:14:14I thought they were
01:14:15past that this year
01:14:15with a bit of a revamp
01:14:16a new look
01:14:17actually to the team
01:14:19and a bit of a new
01:14:19kind of spirit behind it too
01:14:21a team that's mature
01:14:21with a car that's now
01:14:23well developed
01:14:23and absolutely capable
01:14:25of winning this race on pace
01:14:26now Yannick Dalmas
01:14:27who's working for our
01:14:29French colleagues
01:14:30here at Port France
01:14:30he came in earlier
01:14:31and we were talking
01:14:33about his win in 92
01:14:34when he won with
01:14:35Warwick and Blundell
01:14:37and he said
01:14:38like Tom Walkenshaw said
01:14:40it takes three years
01:14:42with a new programme
01:14:43to win Le Mans
01:14:43and here we are
01:14:44there you go
01:14:45and I think that's
01:14:46a very wise
01:14:47kind of thing from Yannick
01:14:49and no one knows
01:14:49better than he does
01:14:50how to win Le Mans
01:14:51but we've got
01:14:52a fascinating race
01:14:53you know
01:14:54I think I could
01:14:55confidently predict
01:14:56if I came back here
01:14:57in another 18 hours
01:14:59we could have
01:14:59a quick quite similar
01:15:00conversation
01:15:01with just different
01:15:02incidents to be talking about
01:15:03it's like a game
01:15:04of automotive chess
01:15:05it's fantastic
01:15:06you know
01:15:07the big difference here
01:15:08I think between
01:15:09any other form of motorsport
01:15:11is that
01:15:12you really do not know
01:15:13what's going to be
01:15:14around the next corner
01:15:14traffic here
01:15:15is a massive factor
01:15:16and Le Mans knows
01:15:17I think better than anybody
01:15:18well they
01:15:20traffic
01:15:21oh god yeah
01:15:22I mean here
01:15:22here more than anywhere else
01:15:24the closing speeds
01:15:25are just insane
01:15:26and he's got to be prepared
01:15:27for anything to change
01:15:28just a quick insert here
01:15:30we're going to change
01:15:31to Eurosport 2 now
01:15:32so those of you
01:15:33who've got Eurosport 2
01:15:34just change channels
01:15:35when we tell you
01:15:35and we'll be back
01:15:37with Eurosport International
01:15:38about 10.30
01:15:39but you can
01:15:40as we told you earlier
01:15:41get all this
01:15:42on the Eurosport iPlayer
01:15:43there is a small subscription
01:15:44but you can do that
01:15:45immediately
01:15:46so if you're not
01:15:48geared up
01:15:48to get Eurosport 2
01:15:49have a look on the internet
01:15:51try and follow that thread
01:15:52go to Eurosport.com
01:15:54so the race continues
01:15:55and
01:15:55to the joy
01:15:57of all the local French
01:15:58Sebastian Bordet
01:15:59the man from Le Mans
01:16:00is our race leader
01:16:01for Peugeot
01:16:02at the moment
01:16:02in the number 8 car
01:16:03he's just done 86 laps
01:16:05he's got Alex Vertz
01:16:06behind him
01:16:06one lap down
01:16:08now we believe
01:16:08and then Capello
01:16:09and Lure
01:16:10for Audi
01:16:12Pagino
01:16:13for the Pescarolo Peugeot
01:16:14and the two
01:16:16Lola Aston Martins
01:16:17there
01:16:17in 6th and 7th place
01:16:19Graham
01:16:19I think that's a change
01:16:20actually
01:16:20Pagino has actually
01:16:21leapfrogged
01:16:22the two Aston Martins
01:16:23at the last
01:16:24pit stop cycle
01:16:25so now what we've actually
01:16:26got are three Peugeots
01:16:26in the top 5
01:16:27and that's not been
01:16:28the case for quite some time
01:16:29we've had
01:16:31Peugeot Peugeot
01:16:31Audi Audi
01:16:32Lola Aston Martin
01:16:33with the
01:16:35Pescarolo Peugeot
01:16:37tagging along behind
01:16:38but that's not the case
01:16:39anymore
01:16:40as we see a car
01:16:40I think in trouble
01:16:41Mark
01:16:41right
01:16:42Seth Neiman
01:16:43isn't it
01:16:44it's the Flying Lizards
01:16:45car
01:16:45oh dear oh dear
01:16:47this is the one
01:16:48that Darren Law
01:16:49was hoping to
01:16:50get that
01:16:52back to back
01:16:54victories
01:16:54at the Rolex
01:16:5524 at Daytona
01:16:56this year
01:16:57for Brumos Porsche
01:16:58and here
01:16:58for the Lizards
01:16:59at Le Mans
01:17:00this isn't fatal
01:17:02it may just be a puncture
01:17:03it's a rear left puncture
01:17:03by the lack of that
01:17:04I think
01:17:05in the scheme of things
01:17:07this may not be too serious
01:17:08it loses a little bit of time
01:17:10and they're fourth in class
01:17:10I think
01:17:11yeah
01:17:11he's got a long way to go though
01:17:12and he's just going to hope
01:17:13that you know
01:17:14that they actually can keep
01:17:15that tyre together
01:17:16if indeed it is a puncture
01:17:17this is a long way to go
01:17:19and as we saw
01:17:19with the Peugeot earlier Liz
01:17:20and once one of these tyres
01:17:22lets go
01:17:22and starts thrashing around
01:17:24it's like a threshing machine
01:17:25and it's going to take anything
01:17:26that's in its way
01:17:27it is
01:17:27and the worst part about Le Mans
01:17:28is it's such a long lap
01:17:29so you've really got to be patient
01:17:31if you get a puncture
01:17:32to just keep the speed down
01:17:33not go too fast
01:17:34yeah
01:17:35we're just going down
01:17:36to the pits again
01:17:36and see who Justine
01:17:38has got for us
01:17:39Patrick how has it goes
01:17:43it's going so far so well
01:17:45the first stint was
01:17:46the best I felt in the car
01:17:48I'm feeling I'm a lot more comfortable now
01:17:51under braking
01:17:53the down shifts are improving tremendously
01:17:55also the situational awareness
01:17:57is improving too
01:17:58I think everybody's driving
01:17:59really heads up out there
01:18:01which is nice
01:18:02track conditions are changing now
01:18:04but I'm glad that first session
01:18:06is out of the way
01:18:07how is it going to go for tonight?
01:18:10are you going to drive during the night?
01:18:12yeah
01:18:12I'm about to do a double right now
01:18:14I'll get in in probably about 20 minutes
01:18:16see how that goes
01:18:17just try to get a nice consistent pace
01:18:20and stay with that
01:18:21and see where we end up after that stint
01:18:22so we can see it's a lot of money now
01:18:24yeah
01:18:25we're getting up to almost $50,000
01:18:26which has been fantastic
01:18:28that's going to take care of a lot of children
01:18:29so we'll just keep plugging away
01:18:31and hopefully we'll be here tomorrow
01:18:32when we take the check
01:18:33thank you
01:18:35thank you
01:18:36so thank you
01:18:38Patrick Dempsey
01:18:40then the man who
01:18:40still I think
01:18:42absolutely overwhelmed
01:18:43by how popular he is in France
01:18:45and Germany too
01:18:46anyway
01:18:47Graham
01:18:48we're just going to say goodbye to you
01:18:49thank you very much

01:18:54when people have been able to follow this race more easily
01:18:56and thanks to all you guys

01:19:26again
01:19:27we're just starting to see
01:19:28some faster times coming up
01:19:29you've talked about the track getting rubbered
01:19:31well I think
01:19:32what we're seeing now
01:19:33is it's starting to cool off as well
01:19:35it's cooling off
01:19:36the track's rubbered up
01:19:37I think now we're reaching
01:19:38sort of a prime time
01:19:39for the faster times
01:19:41and as we go into the night
01:19:42we should be seeing that
01:19:43also what we're seeing is
01:19:44the sun's starting to come down
01:19:45the bugs are coming out
01:19:46we're looking at the in-car scenes
01:19:48and it's definitely becoming more tricky
01:19:50for the drivers to drive now
01:19:52in these conditions
01:19:52they can't see
01:19:53the lights coming in
01:19:54it's becoming a hard time in the evening
