00:00I'm reminding you the AMA Superbikes are back on speed tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern.
00:09They race into Salt Lake City.
00:11Two wheels, one winner.
00:14This is sure to be fabulous.
00:16Handlebar to handlebar action.
00:18The AMA Superbikes tomorrow here on speed.
00:21Be sure to watch it.
00:22Welcome back.
00:23Isn't that a beautiful sight?
00:24And just driving back into the parking lot here after spending a couple of hours at the hotel not long ago.
00:32It really encapsulates Le Mans.
00:34As soon as you see that Ferris wheel and some of the lights, you know you're here.
00:39Well, the Ferris wheel used to be at the top of the hill by the Dunlop Bridge, and it was a little bit off to the side.
00:43But now it makes that fantastic shot down the front straight with the pits on the left and the huge grandstand on the right.
00:51And that Ferris wheel just sets the whole thing off.
00:56As the sole remaining Panos, Esperante is in.
01:01This is Team LNT for one of its regular stops.
01:06One of the great things about Le Mans is to reflect.
01:08And I know that when we showed you this piece the other day, you'd never even seen this vision.
01:12So let's cast our minds back to 1963.
01:17And Pedro Rodriguez gets a hug from his dad just prior to the start of the Le Mans race.
01:21His North American Racing Team Ferrari 330 TRLM was on the pole and would take the early lead.
01:27Fast forward to hour six and the Aston Martin DB4 driven by Innis Island and Bruce McLaren blew an engine spilling all its oil onto the track.
01:39Immediately after the fast corner that follows Hanuri Air, four accidents took place as a result, claiming the life of Brazil's Christian Bino Hines,
01:47who was trapped in his brand new Alpine Renault, which caught fire and burned to the ground.
01:51But racing continued.
01:531961 Sports Illustrated Driver of the Year Roger Penske, a very accomplished racer before becoming a team owner in 66, of course, was Pedro Rodriguez's co-driver.
02:03That 1963 race was his only driving appearance here.
02:06He got in the car and kept it out front.
02:08But at hour nine, the Ferrari had to be retired following a minor accident.
02:14As has always been the case here at Le Mans, the place was packed to see the heroes from around the world.
02:20Even our own David Hobbs was also there.
02:22It was his second Le Mans and he too had an accident, although not so minor.
02:26Transmission problems in his Lola MK6 GT were to blame.
02:30This happened 15 hours in.
02:32Hobbo escaped the injury in this scary looking crash.
02:35At the finish, it was the 21 Ferrari 250 driven by Scafiotto and Bandini, who went on to victory lane.
02:41Yeah, there was a big disappointment.
02:43That was we had gearbox trouble all night and we had done just exactly what the Audi guys did.
02:47We changed all the internals on the gearbox, but we were a couple of gears short.
02:52It dropped into neutral, which is not the way to arrive, especially the oldest.
02:56That's because we were doing about 185, 190 mile an hour on the approach down the hill there.
03:01And if it suddenly drops into neutral, it's not what you want.
03:04This is a brief highlights package here being rolled in by our World Feed partners.
03:09That was Jan Lammers bringing in before handing over to Alex Jung.
03:12And then this was Gregor Fisken with that problem.
03:15And then he needed to be wheeled back into his garage for further inspection and repair.
03:22It certainly is the theme of the night, many cars receiving punctures.
03:27And an update on the Audi, it was not a puncture to Emanuele Piro.
03:31It was a leaky valve.
03:33Yeah.
03:37While we were...
03:38Lamborghini Murcielago, team JLOC, one of the just many cars in the GT1 class.
03:50The diversity just amazing.
03:54Lamborghini looked pretty good on Wednesday and Thursday night.
03:57It certainly has a good sound to it.
03:58They're a little further down the order in GT1.
04:03And speaking of that, Nelson Piquet Jr. is doing a good job for Team Modena.
04:09Team with fellow rookie Antonio Garcia and David Bravin, a Le Mans veteran.
04:14I asked David earlier in the weekend, how do you feel about running with two rookies?
04:18And he said, not ideal, but they're both good drivers.
04:22So he said, I'll give him a shot.
04:31As these guys continue to go to work, obviously, more work being done further back on the car that we can't see.
04:38And one of the interesting things in pit lane is the whole refuelling process.
04:42Take a look at this.
04:43Here at Le Mans, if you're having a good day and everything's going your way,
04:50you can expect to stop approximately 24 times in the 24 hours.
04:54That means you need a lot of fuel.
04:56Over 500 gallons, to be precise.
04:58Now, the next problem is, where do you store it?
05:00Because there's simply not enough space here in pit lane.
05:03Well, at Le Mans, we need to go underground.
05:05Because there are massive storage tanks underneath the lane
05:08and pipes coming from those tanks that lead you right in here
05:11to where the team is and this 55-gallon storage tank or storage reservoir.
05:18Now, of course, you need to monitor how much you're using.
05:21And that's made easy by this meter here.
05:23Now, at every stop and for every team, there is an ACO official
05:27that keeps watch on that and records it for their purposes and the team's
05:31and also to send you a pretty healthy invoice at the end of the race meeting.
05:34Now, you need to get the fuel up into this storage reservoir.
05:37And that's done by this small button here.
05:39Now, a team member will press that, continually hold it,
05:42and when it's full, it automatically stops.
05:45Now, it's not as simple as pull up, filler up, Jack,
05:48because, you know, racers, they're always looking for that extra advantage.
05:52Now, coming from the tank, there is a restrictor and a regulator
05:55that governs the fuel flow.
05:57But each team believes that they can get an advantage
05:59by looking at the types of hoses used and the different materials.
06:02Some believe nice, smooth hoses give you a better flow rate.
06:05Some believe that these rib ones give a better performance as well.
06:09And if you think that you're paying too much at $3 a gallon,
06:12think about these poor guys.
06:13They're paying twice that.
06:14They're paying an awful lot of money for their fuel here.
06:22And, of course, obviously, we have this year,
06:24we have the other difference is the diesel fuel required by the Audis.
06:28Where are they going their fuel from?
06:32Obviously, not those underground tanks under the pit lane.
06:35They must have some sort of storage capacity of their own and separate.
06:43Let's speak to one of our American entrants in this field,
06:47but the story isn't so happy.
06:48We say good morning to Dale White from Peterson White Lightning
06:52Crone Racing.
06:53Hi, Dale.
06:54Lee Diffy here.
06:54What's the story, mate?
06:56Good morning.
06:58Jörg was at the end of a fabulous stint,
07:01running his fastest laps of the race, actually,
07:03and had a really hard impact.
07:06And that's it for us.
07:09It's tough to say.
07:11Very tough to say.
07:12You're a two-time winner here,
07:13and you had high hopes of going on to number three.
07:16And I know how excited Nick Jonson and Tracy Crone were
07:19about joining with you guys
07:21because you've got such great experience here.
07:23But it hasn't exactly been a perfect weekend, has it?
07:25It's been a tough one this year for you guys.
07:28Yeah, they've made it tough for us all week,
07:30starting at the pre-test,
07:32the drivers raced in Watkinsland the day before,
07:35missed the whole morning.
07:38But we accomplished everything,
07:40and then we were rained out on Wednesday's practice.
07:43So it was tough.
07:45Some of the drivers didn't get a lot of laps in prior.
07:47But the race was going, actually, pretty well for us.
07:52Dale, I have to say,
07:53this would be somewhat of a foreign feeling for you
07:55because although you don't have a lot of experience at Le Mans
07:58in terms of years,
07:59you've been so successful,
08:01you've never packed up this early.
08:03No, it's really surprising.
08:05You know, Jörg doesn't take a risk.
08:07I don't know exactly what happened.
08:11But I'm sure the data will show.
08:13But, yeah, it's really unfortunate.
08:15We're sorry to be out this early.
08:16Where did he go off, do you know, Dale?
08:18The first chicane.
08:20Oh.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Okay, well.
08:22I didn't see it on the TV.
08:24I haven't seen a shot of it yet.
08:25Well, the track is in pretty dodgy shape.
08:27There's a lot of slick around.
08:29It's very slick.
08:30A lot of the times are way off,
08:31and, of course, there's all that gravel lying around,
08:33so that could have accentuated or helped him go off the road.
08:36Because, as you say, Birdmeister's not the sort of guy
08:38that goes flying off the road.
08:39It changes every lap.
08:40As you know, every lap is different.
08:42He was going pretty good.
08:44So, you never know.
08:47Well, Dale, we know you've got a lot of work ahead of you,
08:49and you're sounding a little tired,
08:51and we are very sorry to see you out of this one,
08:53but we know you'll be back.
08:54Thank you very much.
08:55Yeah, we'll have a car in Lime Rock in two weeks,
08:57less than two weeks.
08:58Look forward to seeing you.
08:59All right.
08:59Safe trip home.
09:00See you.
09:01Dale White from Peterson White Lightning Crown Racing,
09:04and we wish them a safe passage home.
09:06We'll be back in just a moment.
09:07We'll be back in just a moment.
09:07You get your sleep wherever you can here at Cirque de la Salle,
09:28but it's amazing how everyone springs to life
09:31as soon as the sun rises,
09:34and that is not too far away.
09:37There's a lot of fun that goes on in amongst the team members.
09:41You've got to have somewhat of a sense of humor
09:43just to get through this,
09:44but Peterson White Lightning and Crown Racing,
09:47their sense of humor has failed at the moment
09:49because they are going home,
09:50and just have a look at this graphic
09:52to see what you have to fork out to make it to Le Mans.
09:56Absolutely.
09:57That is, you know,
09:58obviously compared to something like the Audi budget,
10:00as you can imagine,
10:01that is absolutely peanuts,
10:02but still a million bucks,
10:04quarter of a million bucks is a lot of money,
10:07especially when it all comes unglued
10:09at just about the halfway point of the race,
10:11and Dale White was right on his last lap.
10:15Jörg Borgmeister did his fastest lap of the race in that car,
10:19so he was humming right along,
10:20but unfortunately hummed right into the barrier.
10:26Of course, right along the history of Le Mans,
10:30prize money has never been a feature,
10:32but that doesn't really count
10:33because it is the prestige of winning this fabulous event.
10:37Well, Dorsey Schrader tells us more
10:39about a little bit of a rescue plan
10:41if you come into trouble out on the circuit.
10:47The key to winning any endurance race
10:48is in the preparation,
10:49and it's not just the preparation of the race car
10:51I'm talking about,
10:52but the preparation for anything that might happen
10:54during the 24-hour event.
10:56Now, Le Mans is eight miles around,
10:58and the chance is that you might break down out on circuit.
11:00That being said,
11:01the team's equipped the drivers with a toolbox
11:03consisting of things they think could fix the car.
11:06Let's take a look at Peterson White Lightning's toolbox right here,
11:09and you can see they've got a pretty simplistic display.
11:11You have tie straps, which you always can use,
11:14and of course the cutter that you need to cut them with.
11:16You have a roll of duct tape or super tape.
11:18You can fix anything with this.
11:20A flashlight.
11:21It's probably going to be at nighttime when you break down,
11:23and you can see they're concerned with electrical.
11:25You have a bunch of different fuses here that can be replaced,
11:28and of course relays to fix the car as you go.
11:31The Miracle Motorsport team has come to Le Mans somewhat lighthearted.
11:34They think they've got a really good car.
11:35They're not planning on breaking down,
11:36but if they do, they have plan A and plan B.
11:39Plan A is if the car's just a little broke,
11:41and that consists of a couple of screwdrivers, vice grips,
11:44fix anything with the hammer.
11:45Of course, we see tie straps like we always do,
11:47and the racer's tape.
11:48But if things are really bad,
11:49like you've gone off and stuffed the car somewhere,
11:52all the drivers have been told don't do it,
11:53plan B, can of beer, 100 euros,
11:56it might buy you out of trouble,
11:58and if that doesn't work, the knife.
12:00Get it?
12:00You do whatever you can.
12:07As the Labra competition, 550 Maranello is in,
12:10one of the many GT1 competitors in this year's race.
12:14Meanwhile, up front, things still the same.
12:16It is still Emanuele Pirro leading the way
12:18in the Audi R10 for Joost from Sebastian Loeb,
12:23and then it is the dome judd of racing for Holland
12:27with former F1 driver Alex Young.
12:28So that's the top three.
12:29Then the car that, well, I don't want to say everyone was hoping,
12:34but certainly the race favourite,
12:36the number seven of Tom Christensen,
12:37Alan McNish and Dindo Capello is fourth.
12:40And then a GT1 car is in the top five
12:43with Pedro Lamy and Aston Martin racing.
12:46The ProDrive boys doing an amazing job.
12:49They are having an absolutely outstanding run
12:54and the pole sitter in GT1, the 007 car driven by Puccini at the moment.
13:00Also, for some reason, it went off very early on
13:04and whipped that oil pipe off the bottom of it
13:07and dropped a lot of oil on the track
13:09and they had to make a big stop to fix that.
13:13And they were down in about 28th spot for a long time.
13:16Here they are back in 10th, third in the class.
13:19This is the 16 Pescarolo Sport driver change.
13:27This car, of course, had a huge hour and a half stop
13:30to fix the gearbox.
13:32Obviously, a lot longer stop to do their gearbox
13:34than the Audi was to do theirs.
13:36And the 16 car at the moment is down in 22nd spot.
13:44Andrew Marriott's on the spot.
13:47Yes, indeed, Lee.
13:48Nice to be back this magical time
13:51as the sun will come up fairly soon here.
13:54Eric Komash in recent rain here in Japan these days.
13:58He's climbing into the car, of course.
14:00These guys know now they have no chance of a podium
14:03but they'll keep pushing as hard as they can.
14:05And that car leaves us now with that Judd engine.
14:09That Judd engine had a major makeover during the winter.
14:15All the top ends and the engine was completely redesigned.
14:20Now has a lot less castings
14:21and the car is certainly going very well now.
14:25But obviously, with that gearbox problem,
14:27sadly, they're out of any chance of a major reward.
14:32For the second consecutive year too, isn't it?
14:34Because it was gearbox problems that hampered the 16 last year
14:38while it was in contention for a win.
14:40The 17 at the hands of Sahaila Yari crashed out.
14:44Meanwhile, let's talk P2 for a moment
14:45because here's the RML class-leading car.
14:49Mike Newton behind the wheel.
14:51Defending winners.
14:53This was tipped as one of the favourites to win P2
14:56to defend its title.
14:57And so far, so good.
14:58So far, so good, Dave.
15:00Had a bit of an up and down.
15:01The 39 car actually took the lead for some time.
15:03The Synergy car, Hugh Chamberlain.
15:05But the 25 car, the MG, the AER engine car,
15:09four-cylinder, turbocharged four-cylinder,
15:12just a two-litre car.
15:14It's humming right along.
15:15The only thing hanging over there, of course,
15:17is one of these AER engines
15:18has yet to finish the 24-hour run.
15:21But, of course, if you can stress it less,
15:23if the competition drops away,
15:24it makes it a lot easier.
15:26He gave you that run-down of the top five earlier
15:28and Tom Christensen's car sitting in fourth place
15:31and many laps down, almost ten laps down,
15:34on it, the sister car and the race-leading car.
15:36But number five on Speed's all-time top ten motorsport moments
15:41is Tom's record seventh win from last year.
15:45Let's take a moment to relive the finish
15:47of that very memorable race.
15:50And look, there's only two corners left to go
16:02and Tom Christensen, imagine what it's like inside that helmet.
16:06He has done it.
16:07The checkered flag flies.
16:09Tom Christensen is the greatest ever driver at Le Mans.
16:12Seven victories for Christensen.
16:16The first out of the door and the first onto the podium.
16:19He is Mr. Le Mans.
16:24Tom, is this the toughest of your seven wins?
16:27It's always any years different.
16:29This certainly was different because we were,
16:31let's say, outsiders in a way,
16:33but the Audi never missed a beat and reliability proves its point.
16:37I'm the most tired at the end of the race like now,
16:39but I enjoyed it truly.
16:42David, it's a, as we take a look at Le Mans notable drivers,
16:50it's something that we discuss around the dinner table or over a beer
16:54is that in our lifetimes, in our lifetime,
16:57will we ever see anyone eclipse that?
16:59Well, in your lifetime,
17:00did you ever think you could see anyone eclipse Jackie Ix's record?
17:03Well, of course, it's hard enough to win one of these races,
17:06let alone winning six in Ix's case.
17:09Derek Bell, five,
17:10and, of course, seven for Tom Christensen.
17:12But even more amazing than Tom Christensen
17:14is that winning rate.
17:16I mean, he's won seven out of nine.
17:19And look at that beautiful trophy.
17:21That's what you get for a hard, hard day's work.
17:25We'll take a quick break.
17:27More from Le Mans in a moment.
17:39Reminding you of Inside Nextel Cup,
17:41Monday at 7 p.m. Eastern, right here on Speed.
17:45We'll take you inside Nextel Cup.
17:47Dave, Kenny, Michael, and Brian
17:48jostling the position off the track and on the air.
17:52They'll analyse everything
17:53That is Inside Nextel Cup here on Speed
17:56at 7 p.m. Monday, that is Eastern.
17:59Welcome back to the Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans.
18:02We're waiting for day to break,
18:05and I can tell you,
18:05looking out the commentary booth window,
18:09the sky is getting lighter all the time.
18:15We say good morning to Brian Till.
18:17Hey, good morning, Lee.
18:18You know, just an update on the number 63 Corvette.
18:21They just had to serve a three-minute stop-and-go penalty.
18:24I asked Dan Binks, the crew chief, what for.
18:26He said our day has gone from bad to worse.
18:28They say the car got too close to a corner worker
18:30under that last caution period,
18:32so they are not happy about that call at all.
18:35We've also seen a lot of cut-down tires,
18:37and you may wonder why.
18:38They talk about the sharp rocks and the gravel traps.
18:40Take a look at this.
18:41It is just some rocks that I pulled out of one of the nearby gravel traps
18:44on my way over here to pit lane.
18:46Look, they look like arrowheads,
18:47little sharp shards of rocks,
18:49and that's what's getting up on the racetrack.
18:51That's what's cutting these race tires down.
18:53Very easy to understand why they're...
18:55Getting too close to a corner worker.
18:58That is extraordinary.
19:04Alex Jung in for a regular stop and serviced again.
19:08This is the car that is third overall.
19:10This has been an outstanding performance
19:12from the Racing for Holland team so far.
19:15Jörg Johansson and, of course, Jan Lammers.
19:19It's only three laps behind the Hillary-driven Pescarolo.
19:24It's pretty good.
19:25Andrew?
19:25Yeah, that car's going very well indeed.
19:31It was just a quick stop, of course.
19:34Unlike the cars in front of it,
19:36this is on Dunlop tires,
19:38but they didn't...
19:39They're double-stinting those tires
19:40in this call of the night.
19:43So, I think they're in for a very good run.
19:46Jan Lammers, such a veteran campaigner,
19:48has put a very good team together.
19:49And, of course, he also runs the A1 Grand Prix team for Holland.
19:53So, a very busy group of people down here.
19:57And just one thing I'd like to add.
19:59Just been outside.
20:00I have never seen so many people in the night around the circuit.
20:05And most of them seem to be Danish.
20:07And most of them seem to be in large buses
20:08which are blocking all the roads.
20:10But I'm sure there are more people here
20:13that have been for many years
20:14and they're seeing a great shot.
20:17It's quite amazing what Tom Christensen
20:19has done for this event
20:21and so, too, the inclusion of drivers
20:23like Sebastian Loeb and Frank Montagne.
20:25And speaking of drivers,
20:26we've got one with us right now
20:28and that is Johnny Mollum
20:29from the Asimco Motorsports team.
20:31Hi, Johnny.
20:31And you've just got out of the car.
20:33How was your stint?
20:34Yeah, not too bad, thanks, Lee.
20:35To start off with,
20:36it was pretty nice, actually.
20:38Running with quite a lot of cool air in the car.
20:39Now it's nighttime.
20:40And then I had a wheel-bearing
20:41right front wheel-bearing fail
20:43going just on the exit
20:45of the fast right-hander at Indianapolis.
20:46So that kind of woke me up,
20:47got my attention.
20:49We lost a bit of time changing that,
20:50got back out.
20:51The team did a great job fixing it
20:52and the car's running like clockwork again.
20:54That three-minute penalty
20:55to the 63 Corvette
20:56has brought you guys up
20:58to within about two and a half minutes of them.
21:00You're running seventh in class overall.
21:03GT1 this year is just phenomenal.
21:05Yeah, I mean, it's incredible.
21:07I mean, we were running third
21:08after my first stint
21:09when I got out of the car
21:09and the car was running really strong
21:11and we could run sort of 56s, 57s race pace.
21:14Then we backed it off a little bit at nighttime
21:16trying to take care of the gearbox,
21:18shifting a little earlier
21:19to look after the engine.
21:21I can actually imagine
21:22how that penalty came about
21:24with the corner worker.
21:25They were on large,
21:26literally right in the middle of the road
21:27sweeping the track.
21:28So if you happened to wheel spin
21:30anywhere near them,
21:31I can imagine how that penalty
21:32would have occurred.
21:33So you had to be very careful there.
21:34But the track, as ever,
21:35is getting really, really dirty out there.
21:38Through the chicanes,
21:39there's literally just one lane
21:40in between the gravel.
21:41Everywhere else is just looks like,
21:43I mean, Sebastian Lowe
21:43must be filling in his element out there
21:45because there's gravel everywhere.
21:46Well, we saw you
21:47when you stepped from the car.
21:48You had your shirt sleeve rolled up,
21:51the driving suit sleeves rolled up
21:52trying to stay cool.
21:54If I can ask you just to watch
21:55a little piece on the monitor
21:56and listen because Calvin Fish
21:58investigated what you guys at Saline
22:00are trying to do to keep cool.
22:02Take a look at this.
22:06Over the years here at Le Mans,
22:07we've certainly seen a lot
22:08of the GT1 drivers
22:09really struggle with the heat
22:11inside the cockpit area.
22:12The problem is,
22:13once they jump inside the car
22:14for their stint
22:15and close this door,
22:17they are now effectively
22:18sitting inside an oven.
22:19The problem is here
22:20in the engine bay.
22:21The heat from this engine
22:22over the course of a few hours
22:24has been transferred
22:24through these chassis rails
22:26back through the firewall
22:27and inside the cockpit area.
22:30We're looking at
22:30the Assemco Motorsport Saline
22:32engine bay right now
22:33and you'll see a lot
22:34of the detail work
22:35that has been done.
22:36The first thing that stands out
22:37is this highly reflective gold tape.
22:39It looks expensive.
22:41It is expensive.
22:42It's made of gold.
22:43Now, what this does,
22:44it really reduces the temperature
22:45that you would be reading
22:46on these chassis rails.
22:47With the tape on or off,
22:49it reduces it by up to 80 degrees.
22:52The next problem here is,
22:53of course,
22:53down by the exhaust system.
22:55These headers have a thermal wrap.
22:57The team have been working
22:58in conjunction with Paul Hatcher
22:59with to come up
23:00with some new materials down here
23:02by the exhaust manifold itself.
23:04Underneath this wrap
23:05is a metal material
23:06called Inconel.
23:07There's then a ceramic wool
23:08around that
23:09and then obviously
23:10this blanket
23:10has to be secured.
23:12Now, normal Velcro wraps
23:13are not going to work here.
23:14These are, in fact,
23:15made of stainless steel.
23:17Now, the Assemco Motorsports team
23:19is certainly hoping
23:19that all of these
23:20detailed changes
23:21will make a difference
23:22during 24 hours.
23:23Cockpit temperature readings
23:24have been reduced
23:25by 20 degrees.
23:26It should ensure
23:27that these three guys
23:28are in a little better shape
23:29over the course of 24 hours.
23:35So, Johnny,
23:35is it all working?
23:36Pressure's a daisy.
23:37You can see, look,
23:38I'm not even broken a sweat.
23:41I'll tell you what,
23:41there's such clever technology
23:43makes me want to get back in
23:44and maybe do a quadruple stint
23:45next time.
23:47Yeah, right.
23:50Well, look,
23:51you do look pretty sprightly.
23:52Thanks for joining us.
23:53Good luck for the rest of the race
23:55and hopefully you can climb back up
23:56and perhaps be on the podium
23:58in GT1.
23:58Fingers crossed.
24:00Thanks a lot.
24:00Good stuff.
24:01Johnny Molan there
24:02from the Assemco Motorsports team
24:03and things going pretty well
24:05for that Celine at the moment.
24:06Of course,
24:07in the old days
24:08we used to do triple
24:09and quadruple stints
24:10all the time
24:11because it was only ever
24:12two drivers.
24:13None of this three driver stuff.
24:15I can't imagine.
24:16I can't imagine.
24:17The Zaytech team
24:18in pit lane,
24:20serviced,
24:21done
24:22and on their way.
24:28And this is how it looks
24:31in our four respective classes.
24:34It is still the Yost Audi
24:35that leads the way.
24:36Things back on track for them
24:38after a little hiccup earlier.
24:40the boys in pit lane
24:54are multi-talented.
24:57a great example
25:04of how
25:05the boys in pit lane
25:08are multi-talented.
25:09Not only can they make cars
25:10safe and fast,
25:12a little bit of artistic flair
25:14as well.
25:15Nice job, Mike.
25:15How cool was that?
25:31Welcome back to
25:32Circuit de la Salle
25:33for the Michelin 24 hours
25:35of Le Mans.
25:36Lee Diffie,
25:36David Hobbs
25:37has taken a well-earned break.
25:38Dorsey Schrader joins me
25:39up here in the booth
25:40and we've got
25:40Andrew Marriott and Brian Till
25:42down on pit lane
25:43and you can see the sky
25:44starting to get
25:45ever so light.
25:47Dorsey Schrader
25:47Well, we've lost the beach
25:49at the halfway mark
25:50going through this great event
25:52and it's been good news
25:54for some,
25:55not so good for others.
25:56As always,
25:57the night time
25:57springs plenty of surprises.
25:59As we were going
26:00to that last commercial break,
26:02I can update you
26:03that the Racing for Holland Dome
26:05is in a gravel track.
26:08Trap.
26:09It is stuck out on the track
26:11which is very frustrating
26:13for Jan Lammers
26:14celebrating his 20th Le Mans start
26:18as we take a look
26:19at the Valvoline race reset
26:20your respective class leaders
26:22and the massive story there
26:23is the 83 Cycle Motorsport Porsche.
26:27This car only came in
26:29at the last moment
26:29from off the reserves list
26:31when the Issa Brakes car,
26:36the Ferrari for Team Issa Brakes,
26:38crashed heavily at an event at Spa
26:41and they could not get
26:42a replacement car.
26:44In came the Cycle Porsche
26:45and have a look at that.
26:47They lead their class
26:48and lead it very well.
26:49They're in the top 15
26:50in a GT2 car
26:51which is an outstanding effort.
26:54What's amazing is
26:55that when I came back
26:56from my break off,
26:57the race when I left
26:58wasn't much of a race
26:59but it sure turned into one now.
27:01And the Miracle Motorsports car
27:03is sent again.
27:04Andy Lally behind the wheel.
27:05That car is very well placed
27:07in LMP2.
27:08It is second in class
27:10and running 12th overall.
27:13Andrew, what do you have for us?
27:24Yeah, hi Leo.
27:25I'm down in the pit here.
27:26I'm not sure if you're
27:27seeing our picture
27:27but we're showing you
27:28the telemetry from the car
27:30and this 14 car
27:32I'm with in the Jan Lammers pit.
27:35The telemetry shows
27:36the engine is absolutely dead.
27:38You see,
27:38those dials are moving at all
27:40so they've got a big problem
27:42down here.
27:42They're trying to get it
27:43out of the gravel trap
27:44but they've obviously
27:45got the corner workers.
27:46They're relying completely
27:48on them to do that.
27:49But at the moment,
27:49no activity.
27:50Everybody just standing around
27:52looking despondent.
27:53So this fantastic run
27:54they've had to third place.
27:56It's very, very disappointing.
27:59Well, of course the driver
28:01would have had to switch
28:02that engine off
28:03because being stuck
28:04in the gravel trap
28:04no air would be coming
28:06through the radiator.
28:06These cars do not have
28:08electric assisted fans
28:09to keep them cool
28:11if they're stationary.
28:12So that's the bad news
28:13for those guys.
28:14Yeah, we've just spoken
28:15to Jan Lammers
28:16and we've been heaping praise
28:17on Alex Young
28:18and there you have it.
28:21They are stuck
28:23and seemingly going nowhere.
28:26This is our LMP2
28:27class leading car.
28:28Brian is standing by.
28:30Lee, the RML team
28:32having a great run
28:33of it so far
28:34but we still have
28:34a long way to go.
28:35You know, last year
28:36was fraught with troubles
28:37for everyone
28:38in the P2 class.
28:39So far, RML
28:40having a good run
28:41of it here.
28:42Mike Newton
28:42out of the car.
28:43Thomas Airdos
28:44is taking over.
28:45It'll be four new
28:45Michelin tires
28:46with that driver change
28:48and fuel
28:48and they should be
28:49back underway.
28:50Comfortable right now
28:51but as I said,
28:51a long way to go.
28:53Andy Wallace
28:53a welcome addition
28:55to that team
28:56and he hadn't even
28:57driven the car
28:58when he arrived
29:00here at Circuit
29:01de la Sarve
29:02but he knew
29:03that it would be
29:04a strong combination
29:06of both driver,
29:08chassis and engine.
29:11And this is a different
29:12car to the one
29:12that they drove
29:13last year
29:14to Victory Lane
29:15but it's identical
29:16if you know
29:16what I mean.
29:17It's the same
29:18Lola chassis.
29:19They have two cars
29:20identical.
29:21The AER power plant
29:22in the back of it
29:23this year
29:23and things
29:25just going perfect.
29:28They are seventh
29:28outright
29:29and leading
29:31their class
29:31with the Miracle
29:33Motorsports
29:34Courage.
29:36And of course
29:37Andy has
29:38quite a many
29:38laps down.
29:39He has a lot
29:40of experience
29:40also in the
29:41Dyson Racing
29:42car back in the
29:43United States.
29:44It's a very similar
29:45chassis etc.
29:46So certainly
29:47stepping into this
29:48one isn't totally
29:48foreign to him.
29:51If you haven't
29:52been able to watch
29:53all of our coverage
29:53let's bring you up
29:54to date with some
29:55of the highlights.
29:56Look at this.
29:57Dindo Capello
29:58just tried to push
30:01it a little too hard
30:02and almost came
30:03in contact
30:04with the Binney
30:05Motorsports prototype
30:06and was able to
30:07catch it
30:08and get going again
30:09and that lost
30:10the lead.
30:11Problems for their
30:12arch rivals.
30:12The 16
30:13Pescarolo Judd
30:15once again
30:16for the second
30:17consecutive year
30:17gearbox problems.
30:21And
30:22the 17
30:24sister car
30:24off course
30:26and then the
30:27class leading car
30:28Oliver Gavin
30:29got shoved
30:30off the track
30:30by they think
30:31a prototype
30:32and problems
30:33to the front end
30:33and then they
30:34had dramas
30:34with the front
30:35right
30:36and that cost
30:37them the lead
30:38of the class
30:38however they are
30:39still in a very
30:40competitive second
30:41and on the same
30:42lap as Pedro
30:43Lamy's
30:44Aston Martin.
30:46The continual
30:47grind,
30:47the continual
30:48work in the pits,
30:49the Intersport
30:50team,
30:50one of many
30:51American teams
30:52in this race
30:53and they have
30:54just done a
30:55driver change
30:55with Duncan
30:56Dayton taking
30:57over from
30:58Liz Halliday.
30:59Very impressed
31:00with that LMP2
31:01class.
31:01Usually we see
31:02those cars are
31:03very fragile
31:03because they're
31:04built very light.
31:06However,
31:06this time
31:07all of these cars
31:08really put up
31:09a good fight.
31:12Yeah,
31:13normally you have
31:13to scroll down.
31:15We get 16 cars
31:16per page
31:17on our timing
31:18and scoring monitor
31:19and usually have
31:20to scroll down
31:20to the second
31:21page
31:22to find where
31:24the LMP2
31:25cars are.
31:26Right now
31:27we've had good
31:28news for Racing
31:29for Holland.
31:30The car has
31:31rejoined the
31:31circuit.
31:33So somehow
31:33Alex Yong
31:34has been able
31:35to get that
31:36car up and
31:37running again
31:38and will slowly
31:39be making his
31:40way back
31:41to the pits.
31:41We will keep
31:42an eye out
31:43for that.
31:47That's for sure.
31:49Well,
31:49February this year
31:50at the long
31:51standing
31:51traditional
31:52fitness camp
31:53in Bavaria,
31:54the Audi
31:55works drivers
31:55prepared themselves
31:56for the stress
31:57and strain
31:57of the upcoming
31:58DTM and
31:59American Le Mans
32:00series and of
32:01course this,
32:02the 24 hours
32:03of Le Mans.
32:03It's very good.
32:07It's a perfect
32:08way to start
32:08the year.
32:09Every driver
32:09is obviously
32:10professional
32:10training a lot
32:11but here you
32:12actually get
32:12to do it
32:13together.
32:14News this
32:15week mainly
32:16for building
32:16up the team,
32:17building up
32:18the Audi
32:18motorsport
32:20family,
32:21also improving
32:22our communication
32:25abilities.
32:25We have a lot
32:27of fun
32:27but obviously
32:28that was
32:28country skiing,
32:29we swim a lot,
32:30we do some
32:30spinning,
32:31we do some
32:32gymnastics,
32:33we do weight
32:34training and
32:35then we get
32:35everything checked
32:36on the oxygen
32:39and blood
32:39and stuff like
32:40this so we know
32:41that when we
32:42live here
32:42if we're not
32:45in top shape
32:45we definitely
32:46know which area
32:47we need to
32:48prepare for the
32:48season.
32:49Fitness is
32:49crucial for
32:50success in
32:51motorsport
32:51because without
32:53any fitness
32:53you wouldn't
32:54have any success
32:55because you
32:55tend to do
32:56any mistakes
32:57you could do
32:58in cars and
32:59that would be
33:00a showstopper.
33:05Is that what
33:05you used to do
33:06Dors?
33:07Actually you
33:07had to do
33:08some sort of
33:10physical activity
33:11you can't just
33:12jump in one of
33:12these cars and
33:13hope to go out
33:14there and drive
33:14it fast it's
33:14too strenuous
33:15pulling a lot
33:16of G-forces
33:17in the corners
33:18and so forth.
33:19This time of
33:19night right now
33:20when it's very
33:20cool your muscles
33:21tend to cramp
33:22up you gotta
33:22really watch
33:23getting the old
33:23charlie horse
33:24in the leg
33:25or something
33:25as you're
33:25going around
33:26here.
33:27The Luc
33:27Alfong
33:27Corvette
33:28ninth overall
33:30in the C5R
33:32we will take
33:32a break and
33:33update you on
33:33the 14 and
33:35whether the
33:357 of Dindo
33:36Capello can
33:37leapfrog into
33:37third place.
33:45Prior to
33:46competing in
33:47this the
33:47master of
33:48all endurance
33:48races the
33:49ALMS had
33:50back-to-back
33:51events at
33:51Houston and
33:52Mid-Ohio.
33:53Afterwards there
33:54were only two
33:55days to get
33:55everything ready
33:56to be shipped
33:57overseas to
33:57Le Mans for
33:58the test.
33:59From here
34:00they've got
34:00some trucks
34:01that are going
34:01to take it
34:01to Cleveland
34:03Airport and
34:04then it's put
34:04on a big
34:05plane cargo
34:05plane along
34:06with some
34:06of the other
34:07teams.
34:09It's by the
34:10pound you
34:10know you rent
34:11space it's
34:11kind of space
34:13pound but it
34:14arrives in
34:15France and
34:16then they
34:16truck it down
34:17to the race
34:18track.
34:19Following
34:19Le Mans the
34:20schedule
34:20craziness
34:21continues.
34:22Teams will
34:22race in
34:23Lime Rock
34:23on July 1st
34:24meaning there
34:25will be no
34:26rest for
34:26the weary.
34:27The race
34:28ends Sunday
34:29afternoon around
34:295pm but we
34:31have to be out
34:31of the track
34:32by 5pm the
34:33next day so
34:34it's a scramble
34:36just to check
34:36the car see
34:37what we might
34:38need we don't
34:38really have time
34:39to work on
34:39it we have
34:40just one day
34:41to pack so
34:41it's basically
34:43non-stop.
34:44It's an
34:48amazing workload
34:49isn't it as
34:49we have crossed
34:50the halfway
34:51point of the
34:52Michelin 24
34:53hours of Le Mans
34:55and speaking
34:58of the ALMS
34:59this is how
35:00things stand
35:01after the
35:02opening three
35:03rounds and
35:03leading in to
35:05the upcoming
35:06Lime Rock
35:06round and
35:07Dindo Capello
35:08and Alan
35:08McNish leading
35:09the P1
35:10class.
35:11Prototype 2
35:11class is led
35:13by Liz
35:13Halliday and
35:14Clint Field
35:15with an 8
35:16point margin
35:16over the
35:17Penske Porsche
35:17of Sasha
35:18Masson and
35:19Lucas Lua
35:20and it is
35:20the unbeaten
35:22Corvette of
35:24Oliver Gavin
35:25Olivier Beretta
35:26will they be
35:27beaten in
35:282006?
35:29We will find
35:30out and
35:30Johannes van
35:31Overbeck
35:31tremendous
35:32diversity as
35:33far as the
35:33winners in
35:34the GT2
35:34class but
35:35Johannes
35:36leading all
35:38by himself.
35:40That's how
35:41they stand and
35:41he's had a
35:42rough old week
35:42here.
35:43at the
35:44Michelin 24
35:45hours of
35:45Le Mans.
35:46There's
35:46Stefan Johansson
35:47Andrew's
35:47with him.
35:49Well
35:49Stefan
35:50very bad
35:50news
35:50now on
35:51the course
35:51I believe
35:52there's a
35:52steering
35:53problem
35:53with the
35:53car.
35:54It's gone
35:54in a
35:54gravel trap
35:55you're
35:55telling me
35:55maybe
35:56that both
35:57the steering
35:57arms are
35:58broken.
35:59That's
35:59what we
36:00think we
36:00heard on
36:02the radio
36:02yeah we're
36:03not sure
36:03whether the
36:05throttle got
36:06stuck open
36:06or something
36:07but he
36:07must have
36:08gone off
36:08pretty hard
36:08to break
36:09both
36:09steering
36:10arms.
36:11Stefan you've
36:12won this
36:12race before
36:13now your
36:14career is
36:14probably in
36:15the twilight
36:15is this your
36:16last time
36:16here?
36:17I don't know
36:18I hope not
36:19I hope there's
36:20a few more
36:20races left
36:21in me still
36:21but you know
36:22it's a bit
36:23it has happened
36:25because you know
36:26we're looking
36:26really good here
36:27today you know
36:28it's been running
36:29well all day
36:30and hopefully
36:31we can get the car
36:32fixed at least
36:32so we can finish
36:33the race.
36:34So that's the
36:34plan to try and
36:35get it back
36:35and get back
36:36in the race.
36:37The battle now
36:38is going to be
36:39to get it back
36:40here so we can
36:40repair it of
36:41course yeah but
36:42you know it's
36:42not easy to
36:43drive a car
36:43back without
36:44steering I
36:44guess.
36:45Stefan thanks
36:46very much to
36:46you Brian Till.
36:48Well thanks
36:48Andrew the
36:498 was in
36:50Emanuele Pirro
36:50behind the
36:51wheel of that
36:52Audi R10
36:52it was a
36:53routine stop
36:53but there is
36:55body work
36:55damage behind
36:56the left rear
36:57wheel and the
36:57thing that's
36:58disconcerting to
36:58me although the
36:59team didn't seem
37:00to be too
37:00concerned about it
37:01is that body
37:02work is broken
37:03but pulled
37:04outward which
37:04tells me it
37:06should catch air
37:07as it's going
37:07down the
37:07straightaway that
37:08will begin to
37:09rip that body
37:10work apart
37:11eventually and
37:12could create
37:12some aerodynamic
37:13drag and
37:13imbalance in the
37:14car so we'll
37:15have to keep an
37:16eye on that
37:17meanwhile the
37:187 car is on
37:19pit road they
37:20will be coming
37:20in for a stop
37:21don't believe
37:23there will be a
37:23driver change
37:24here on the
37:27marks Audi R10
37:30is here looks
37:31like routine
37:32stop they'll
37:33double stint
37:33the tires as
37:34well
37:35routine stop
37:37for these guys
37:37they are climbing
37:38back up the
37:39charts up to
37:40third
37:40it's not over
37:42until it's over
37:42we understand
37:43weather could be
37:43coming tomorrow
37:44could be a
37:45brand new ball
37:46game if it
37:46starts to rain
37:47here at Le Mans
37:47certainly the
37:49case
37:50we can't lose
37:52sight of the
37:52fact that there
37:53is only one
37:54lap
37:54one and a
37:55half call it
37:56between first
37:57and second
37:58here at Le Mans
37:59and Eric
37:59Ellery
37:59the Pescarolo
38:01sport these
38:01guys are some
38:04nine laps down
38:05on the sister
38:06car
38:06and you hear that
38:11very different
38:12sounding
38:12and you heard how
38:14hard the driver
38:15worked for not
38:16spinning the tires
38:17you heard the
38:18chirp when he
38:18let the clutch
38:19out the first
38:19time he put it
38:20right back in
38:20as not to light
38:21up those tires
38:22and get that
38:22three minute
38:23penalty
38:23speaking of a
38:25penalty
38:26the
38:26Vinnie Motorsports
38:29Lola has
38:30received a
38:31one minute
38:32stop go penalty
38:33not quite sure
38:34what for
38:34and we will
38:35try to
38:37update you
38:38on that
38:39frustrating
38:40situation
38:41with the
38:42racing for
38:42Holland
38:42look at that
38:43beautiful scenes
38:45here at Le Mans
38:45I think you get
38:46a one minute
38:46penalty just for
38:47being in the
38:48race
38:48you know
38:49it's just
38:49the ACO's
38:50way
38:50they've been
38:52handing them
38:52down haven't
38:53they pretty
38:53hard
38:53yeah
38:54absolutely
38:54and Bill
38:58Bill Binney's
38:59car is back
38:59on track
39:00as we speak
39:01so we're up to
39:02date with the

39:04is fifth
39:05overall in the

39:13and Alex
39:13Jung still
39:14stuck out
39:14on the
39:15circuit
39:15somewhere
39:15you see
39:17now
39:17taking a
39:18look at
39:18the racetrack
39:19you can see
39:19all that
39:19gravel
39:20drivers have
39:20been complaining
39:21about all
39:21night long
39:22big chunks
39:23of rock
39:23and those
39:24rocks
39:24I should
39:25say

45:46for fuel only. Eric just chucked out his water bottle. The fuel is still going in. This usually
45:52takes about 27, 28 seconds. And interestingly, behind the head is the name of Bouillon, because
46:00Jean-Christophe, of course, always stalled it. Jean-Christophe Bouillon, they obviously
46:08hurt himself putting up those curtains in the kitchen, what wives make you do. And the
46:14team, I think, has played a lovely tribute to Bouillon. Of course, Dreisler and Reg Lee
46:19and the European Le Mans series, they've left his name on the car, but instead of putting
46:25it on the side, they put it on the headrest. But that was a nice thought. I believe Bouillon
46:30is here somewhere, but probably in bed at the moment. We'll try and find him in the morning.
46:34Tell him not to find him on the curtains up. Yes, if you're not up to speed with that story,
46:41Jean-Christophe Bouillon, who is the defending Le Mans Endurance Series, along with Emmanuel
46:47Collard. They were very much favorites here. He broke his wrist at home doing domestic duties
46:53and obviously was replaced by Nicholas Manassian in the 16th. You'd look forward to running this
46:57race for an entire year as a driver. You're prepared for it. You do all these things and
47:01your wife says, will you hang that curtain there? And then, bam, broken, broken. And there is
47:06the man, Henri Pescarolo, with his team, who still very much is within striking distance
47:12of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, his first as a team owner. And the increase of Pescarolo
47:21sport flags, hats, green helmets, etc. in this crowd this year compared to last is quite incredible.
47:31They knew they got so close last year, Dorsey, they really feel they have a chance in 2006.
47:38It is 40 pounds lighter, but more importantly, they took 40 pounds off the cylinder heads.
47:43Cylinder heads, of course, at the very top of the engine. That lowered the CG, the center
47:47of gravity of that entire car. It's a V10, 5.0-litre 72-degree jod, and it's, they've done just a huge
47:54amount of work. New gearbox extract this year, lighter, narrower.
48:11Let's get it to Andrew. He is with Henri Pescarolo, the man himself.
48:16Yes, I am, Louis. He's very kindly come out of the back office where Henri does all his work.
48:21So tantalizingly close, Henri.
48:24I'm a bit disappointed with number 16, of course. There was an electrical problem in the wiring
48:31of the engine. Now it works very well, but we stopped very long time to find the problem.
48:38And number 17, until now, it's no problem. So we cannot be really as fast as the Audi, actually.
48:46But we are not so far, so the race is still very long. You know, we are just, we just passed
48:55the middle of the race, so anything could happen.
48:58And we know the Audi has changed the gear cluster, so they obviously have some issues
49:03with the Audi with the transmission.
49:05Yeah, we saw that, you know, but I hope they will have some other problems anyway, but we
49:13could have also too, you know. It's a difficult race, a very long race. And I hope we will be
49:20a little bit more reliable than them. Henri, is this better doing this than all those great
49:26victories, that string of victories you have? We've got some lovely pictures of you winning
49:30back in the 70s. Oh, it was, it was better. For a driver, nothing is better than to drive,
49:37you know, of course. But at the end, you must do something else. And to have your own team
49:43and to run it, it's fantastic, you know. I'm still driving, but I'm driving my team now.
49:53But Henri, finally, you still actually race a little bit in AC Cobras and the historic cars
49:58and still enjoy yourself. Yeah, yeah, I will be in the Mont Classic, yes, of course. And during the winter,
50:05I drive my cars also to about aerodynamic evolution. And of course, it's better for you drivers
50:15at the steering wheel for the race, you know. Thanks very much, Henri. We'll let you get back
50:19into your office. Thank you very much. Thank you. Lovely to hear from the man himself.
50:23Great work, Andrew. It's very difficult to get a hold of Henri Pescarolo because there is so
50:29much media attention here, being the great French hope. And what about last year? It really was a
50:36David and Goliath battle and still very much is, but it got very, very close at times. Audi versus Pescarolo.
50:44But in the end, the 16 Pescarolo Sport would end up finishing second overall, some two laps
50:50behind the Audi. The 2005 Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans is underway. Look at the speed difference there.
51:01Huge draw from the Pescarolo Sport and it just blew by JJ Lato. Oh, the number 16 looks to be going very slowly.
51:09That was our leader. It just made that pit stop 16 in trouble. You've never seen so many
51:14journalists in your life as there are in this team, but it looks as if this race is starting
51:19to edge towards Audi's way. We've got three Audi's up front. The number two and the number three
51:24from Champion ADT and the number four from PlayStation Team Arica. Tell us what happened to
51:29Manuel when you had the problem over in Anage. I pressed the brake pedal and it was like solid
51:35hard with no bite and I had to press very hard and I locked the wheels and I went straight.
51:42For Henri Pescarolo and his men to win this event. They've got to turn up the wick. They've got to run full speed all the way.
51:49They've got to take chances if they want to win this race, guys.
51:53JJ Lato has Eric Comas large in his mirrors. Now, this is not going to be past the position on the track, but it will be another lap regained by the 16 Pescarolo car, which sits at the moment behind JJ Lato.
52:08And it's a huge psychological shot as well. This is it. This could be the defining moment in the overall battle of this race.
52:15The Pescarolo Sport Judd is in the garage. The checkered flag flies. Tom Christensen is the greatest ever driver at Le Mans. Seven victories for Christensen.
52:31And who knows? History just might repeat. What I mean by that is that Pescarolo could still take the fight right up to Audi. There is only a lap and a half between those guys.
52:44So remaining Spiker in pit lane. Brian.
52:51Routine stop down here. Lee, Johnny Kane behind the wheel. He's a Great Britain Formula 3 champ back in 97. Also Formula Boxall Lotus champ. They're going to put some more water in for him.
53:03Obviously, it's kind of cool here in the night. These guys working very hard, though. You talked already about the heat in these cars.
53:10Now, the Spiker a little bit of an advantage over that heat sink because the engine is in the back, so you don't have as much heat coming through into the cockpit, but it's still very warm.
53:19These guys still working very hard. What a great story for this entire Spiker team. This company over a century old. They made airplanes before. Now they're back to making cars, and they are running well here at Le Mans.
53:31Just want to update you, too, on the overall battle.
53:37Emanuelle Pirro has been able to gain that half lap back and now has a full two lap lead over Eric Ellery for Pescarolo with the second Audi running third overall.
53:48Edro Lamy fourth and leading GT1.
54:18Too bad everything doesn't work as well as the tripod flashlight. Only from Stanley.
