00:00:00with 16 hours 31 minutes very nearly 32 minutes of the 2006 Le Mans gone it's still that Audi
00:00:17number eight of Marco Verna which leads the way 261 laps now on the board and he is just over
00:00:25two seconds sorry just over two laps ahead of the number 17 Pescarola which has been chasing him for
00:00:31some time and is still in second place Sebastian Lerb the driver at the moment 817 in positions one
00:00:38and two third is the number seven Audi Alan McNich is still 10 laps behind and is pushing on hard but
00:00:45I think there's still a little bit in that car and they're just taking it easy to get to the finish
00:00:49our fourth place for the fastest GT1 runner 009 the Aston Martin Stefan Ortele leading the way
00:00:55and he's so near to a podium 245 laps completed by him and the Corvette of Jan Magnussen number 64
00:01:03is still chasing and they are trading times they're so close three tenths of a second only separating
00:01:08the lap times on the last lap it's still there for pretty much what it was two minutes and 19 seconds
00:01:14separating the first two in GT1 in sixth place is the fastest car in LMP2 as it has been for
00:01:21again most of the race once it had settled down and that's the number 25 MG Lola Mike Newton is at
00:01:27the wheel and that car has competed 242 laps ahead of the number 007 car which is in seventh place
00:01:34it's the third car in the GT1 category and it's the Aston Martin the other works Aston Martin of Andrea
00:01:41Puccini 240 laps in eighth place is the number 72 GT1 Corvette and that's on 238 laps in ninth place
00:01:49the number 62 Aston Martin the Russian age car 237 laps and in tenth place 63 the other Chevrolet
00:01:58Corvette Ronfellos at the wheel 235 laps for that one in GT2 the positions there are that the Porsche of
00:02:09the cycle motorsport team Pierre Irette still leads the way and he's now got something of six laps of an
00:02:16advantage over the next Porsche in that class which is the number 93 team Taisan Advan class class car of
00:02:24Kazuyuki Nishizawa who is driving that car at the moment in third place number 81 the team LNT
00:02:32Panos with Tom Kimber-Smith at the wheel and that is less than two minutes now behind the cycle motorsport
00:02:39Porsche so Tom Kimber-Smith doing everything he can to close down that gap and it's entirely possible
00:02:44that he could do that before the end of that this race there's still seven hours to go
00:02:48and it is just 25 minutes to 10 o'clock in the morning here in France the Tom Christensen run of
00:03:07victories here at Le Sarf looking to come to an end there's a certain sense of resignation about TK this
00:03:14is what he said to us earlier on I got woken up pretty early apparently you know more about what
00:03:19happened uh with I didn't do before he was in early and there was apparently contact with another car
00:03:24and I was planning to go out and do a triple stint but immediately I did one stint complete but I had a
00:03:31lot of vibration and I um I located that as the floor there was no problem in there in the balance of
00:03:37the car of the car but every time I came more than 250 the car starts to shake a lot so um lose uh
00:03:46lose part of the underfloor and uh this we for sure can't continue driving with so they came a safety
00:03:53car so they didn't took the option to change it and as you can see it's not an easy part to change and
00:04:00uh we lose a lot of time again that was Tom Christensen talking to us earlier on at New Zealand
00:04:06we spoke to a moment Tonatua Mendoza is in Mexico thanks for keeping us on the other side of the
00:04:13ocean in touch with the action going to sleep soon uh it would be good to hear it mentioned from Mexican
00:04:17fans before going to bed just did it there you go as the leader comes into the pit lane and up at that
00:04:23end at the moment as the number eight car cuts its diesel engine here's Graham Tyler and Marco Werner
00:04:30joins me as you say silently up to the pit box stopping bang on the marks as you would hope he
00:04:36would uh Manuel Epirro is in the back of the pit watching the tv screens looking extraordinarily calm and
00:04:43collected about everything a quick drink for Marco and then the bottle is tossed aside fuel still going
00:04:49in and remember this is diesel fuel we're making history at La Sarthe this year and the number eight car
00:04:56anyway looks like being the one to do it around goes the finger from the engineer around goes the motor
00:05:03and out goes Marco and sadly out of the 50 labra competizione 550 marinello uh is getting now who was at the
00:05:15wheel of that is a beppy hi it's Jean-Luc Blanchemont thank you and that car was just getting slower and
00:05:25slower and oh smoke issuing from the back of that car thank you graham and that is where the wr had
00:05:33its uh conflagration i thought that car had already retired could that possibly be a replay it may well be
00:05:39unfortunately unfortunately no no this is live okay the car is uh joe bradley's down in that pit and they
00:05:45are they are looking at the screens as we watch these live pictures joe yes indeed uh the labra team
00:05:51were indeed waiting for that car coming in limping and it was i've yet to establish exactly what the
00:05:57problem was but uh those were true and live pictures what you were witnessing there the demise of the number
00:06:0350 ferrari oh dear the labra competition team and uh disconsolate faces down here in the pit
00:06:09and joe that car was in the top 20 19th position when it pulled up uh john marine in
00:06:16houston texas says i don't know if you've mentioned this on radio or mom but what do you think about
00:06:20the proposal for closed top cars and also air conditioning well we haven't got time to discuss that right now
00:06:28however store that one away mr trustwell because it is something that we need to talk about as we
00:06:33watch the bill binney 24 lola in the prelim of its distinctive salt tire color scheme as the mike newton
00:06:44driven 25 rml lola from wellingborough right in the center of england about as far away from the sea as you
00:06:53can get actually in northamptonshire right in the middle of the carbon fiber triangle although we're
00:06:58going to call call out the carbon fiber diamond now we've decided uh it's more suitable for carbon
00:07:03fiber and uh while we watch the owner of the car mike newton continuing to circulate remind our speed
00:07:09viewers that we'll take a short break literally just 60 seconds and you're listening to speed and
00:07:15radio lamont together for 2006. well we welcome back our speed tv viewers with the sound of a
00:07:27ls1 corvette motor being fired up as the local font adventure 72 corvette goes back into the freight
00:07:35mike newton continues to lead in the p2 category now up to uh sixth position
00:07:45i was at the rml facility in wellingborough the back end of the week before the race
00:07:52and actually was there when they fired up the engine on the car before it went into the transporter
00:07:58superb amount of preparation that goes in to this car phil parker and all the lads have worked tirelessly
00:08:06not just racing here at le mans of course but also in the le mans series haven't had a lot of look there
00:08:12yet this year got pitched into the wall at the start of the istanbul race
00:08:18and uh then spent the rest of the race fighting back not helped by the fact that the organizers
00:08:23decided mid-race to cut it down from a six hour to a four hour race because they didn't have enough
00:08:28fuel there alan mcnish aboard the third place audi the number seven car that he shares with multiple winner
00:08:35tom christensen and dindul capello of course three drivers who have won le mans before mcnish must
00:08:43feel he's due one 1998 the last time he won here at the wheel of a porsche in a gt1 evil 911 that is
00:08:52blindingly quick through there so we're on the on-board pictures with mcnish a little bit of a twitch there as
00:08:58he came through the uh last parts of the porsche curves all about rhythm he told me the porsche curves
00:09:07you really need to get in sync with it it is very quick indeed and you don't even want to
00:09:11think about putting a wheel off we've seen a number of big accidents down the years that's mario andretti
00:09:16he knows all about going into the wall backwards in that part of the circuit he's in our sight now if
00:09:20i look to my right i can see the car go through and in fact he's gone underneath me without me noticing
00:09:27because it just it's just a whoosh it's what you hear alongside the track is the tires more than the
00:09:34engine the tires make so much noise on the track is that what you hear that and the air moving and
00:09:40that's about it yeah it is it is a very surreal sensation did you ever see the um the lotus turbine
00:09:47formula one car not up close well i hope you'd see it racing up no because there's a similar sort of
00:09:54noise you you're not quite sure what to expect sebastian loeb the current world rally champion
00:10:03for citron and leading the world championship this year has just brought the second place
00:10:07guy to the pit lane joe bradley is a pity indeed the current leader of the world rally championship
00:10:12is remaining at the wheel of the number 17 pascarolo the car has just taken on fuel it's about over
00:10:19they're just cleaning out the uh air ducts and that judge v10 sounds in my view what a racing engine
00:10:29should sound like and that's not decrying the uh audi diesel at all in fairness though joe they don't
00:10:34use a whole load of revs anymore to pull away it is all of these engines are obviously quite talky
00:10:40because that sounded no disrespect to sebastian loeb but um that sounded like my mother pulling out of the
00:10:46pits there absolutely there seems to be uh this sort of sedate method of uh of pulling away obviously
00:10:52they don't want to over stress things like transmissions drive shafts clutches um and so
00:10:57you know that you just ease the car out let's see what's happening with the bill binny car with uh grim
00:11:02tyler yeah number 24 this is the lola zytek uh bill binny's just taken the car over just got in from uh
00:11:10yujira tirada who's on his 26th appearance here at le mans uh probably in my submission the most of
00:11:16any uh driver here this year so uh yujira standing by looking rather anxious bill binny is pumping
00:11:23away at the start button and it won't go they've been pushing cold air under the engine trying to
00:11:28get this starter to cool a bit free it off they're now throwing a bag of ice across anything to try and
00:11:34cool down very hot components here seriously since five o'clock yesterday and there's just no uh
00:11:41there's just no movement in that starter engine at all immense uh immense frustration for bill binny
00:11:47sitting at the wheel of his own car there john yes and um yeah yeah maggotson has uh done another good
00:11:57lap he's put in a 351 864 the best he's done is a 351 851 and that's helped him bring
00:12:04the gap down between himself and stefan or telly it was two minutes 19 on the previous lap and he
00:12:08brought it down to two minutes 13 now so uh yeah in the corvette number 64 still going as hard as he
00:12:15possibly can now i can tell you you can't see this but we've got a safety car out on the circuit as the
00:12:22bill binny cars rock backwards and forwards the safety car is out and mcnish has just seen the boards
00:12:30as he comes up on the remaining private here aston the 62 car and then indianapolis oil down oil down
00:12:39at indianapolis is what we're being told and now will everybody scramble to the pit lane this is
00:12:48helping bill binny because he's only four laps ahead of the intersport car there are the marshals
00:12:54that's uh lawrence i wonder if the oil is from the 76 porsche and i'm not psychic when i say that
00:13:02because joe bradley has a theory joseph call you a detective but well i've got a clue you see the
00:13:08number 76 imza performance porsche has come in and it is absolutely coated in oil it's restarted it i'm not
00:13:17sure if this is the cause of the oil slick but they're certainly leaving an oil slick down here in
00:13:20pitlane the car is covered in an oil slick and it's all over the back end of the car from the
00:13:26engine compartment now then are they are they now wait yes they they fight it they fight it up they're
00:13:32now wailing it back in to take a closer look because and there's an absolute oil slicks like the torrey
00:13:38canyon down here in pitlane uh or exxon valdez for those of you in the states uh the new audi tt
00:13:46the new safety car brand in fact that car hasn't even been properly launched to the press yet has
00:13:53picked up alan mcnish in third place now depending on where the leader is this could be a lap gained or
00:14:02a lap lost for these top guys uh charles dressing is still on the phone from jacksonville in the early
00:14:09out very early hours of the uh the morning there charles thank you for staying with us only two safety
00:14:14cars being used at le mans this year uh normally we have three but slightly less confusion this year
00:14:20with the just the two audis being utilized well i hope there's less confusion in this safety car
00:14:25period than there was in the first yesterday afternoon oh it's terrible don't understand what
00:14:29happened the the best that we made of it uh charles was that the uh the audi fortunately the two
00:14:36audi safety cars one is an audi tt as in comes the third place gt2 car the lnt panels uh one of them is
00:14:44as an rs4 brand new rs4 the other one is the new tt that you've just seen and uh the tt picked up the
00:14:50leaders and the rs4 picked up the rest of the field as it comes the 64 corvette and it just seems as though
00:15:04the leaders were released long before the other train of cars and they caught them up very very quickly
00:15:09now we've also got an intervention car coming down the pit lane which is a peugeot 307 sw with amber
00:15:18lights on it now where is that going straight out of pit lane and onto the track uh maybe they're
00:15:25running out of oil dry around the far side uh the lap here charles is so long that i understand the
00:15:31need for multiple safety cars but it's never been particularly satisfactory well i always thought i'd
00:15:37never understood why you couldn't have just one safety car although it would just take so long to
00:15:42collect the field other than that i can't imagine what's wrong with having one safety car
00:15:49yes that's a good point charles now the third place gt2 car we saw the bright orange lnt
00:15:56pinnors go into the pit lane it's now gone into its garage as joe bradley has a pescarolo at pitting
00:16:02yeah i was uh i would hope it had made my way to lnt but i got trapped in the media scrum down here
00:16:06at pescarolo now this is the 16 car behind the car that's with joe bradley sorry what was that behind
00:16:13the velvet rope with joe bradley yes it did that'll be the day right now uh in my environment uh we've
00:16:20got the fuel going into the 16 car it's uh nicholas nicholas manassian is at the way of this car i believe
00:16:26and uh if that's the case he's going to stay there just a bit of an observation visual inspection of the
00:16:32rear end it's caught sorry got the help right at the end it's uh emmanuel collar at the uh wheel of
00:16:39that car he stayed input he didn't take on tires just fuel for that car and now when we went to lnt
00:16:44to see what's happening there graham tyler has the gt one field or at least the ones that count in his
00:16:49area in the pit lane uh is it is it uh is it is one watching the other graham uh not yes i think
00:16:55they probably are you know 64 has already been and gone that's the the uh lead of the uh the
00:17:01compuware corvette oliver gavin taking over from jan magnuson who you described putting in such rapid
00:17:07time so again we'll try and track him down in a minute but for now it's the 009 aston martin the
00:17:15field leader in gt1 who screams to a halt here pedro larmy it is who uh takes a takes the car over from
00:17:22stefan ortelli stefan jumping out and running round back into the pit garage as pedro larmy the
00:17:28portuguese driver is installed in the car you get a clean green screen to have a look through which
00:17:34is important now the sun is still fairly low in the sky and in some areas around here you're cresting
00:17:41hills and coming directly into the the rays of the sunshine which must be immensely difficult to cope with
00:17:46i don't know how these guys do it it's bad enough in a road car at sensible speeds these guys are driving
00:17:51three times at that i don't know how they do it grim no especially so and here we are
00:17:56that's an astonishingly quick turnaround we've been talking i've been talking for a long long while
00:18:01now about the merits of the pratt and miller guys but i have to tell you on that stop i think pro
00:18:06driver even quicker now where is that car going to rejoin and this is where this two safety car thing
00:18:11is really a bit confusing and will take a while for us to sort this out the essex car has spun
00:18:18at mulsanne corner that's the zytek and put off one of the pescarolos and i think that is sebastian loeb
00:18:26just going very wide obviously plenty of gravel experience so no problems there kept it together
00:18:32and well the tv director seems to think it was the other car uh immanuel collard um let's just quickly uh
00:18:41take stock then there is one of the trains of cars behind the safety car as cleanup continues
00:18:46here on 91.2 fm race tuned with evo magazine john high enough for the team for radio le mans and speed

00:20:30lemont.org email the studio studio at radio lemont.com straight down to graham tyler who is down in the uh
00:20:42outing number seven fitness element this changes and gets out of the safety car period yeah just
00:20:47getting uh getting out of the way the uh selena made a quick stop for fuel as well cindo capello now
00:20:52strapped in as you hear the air hammers working on the nicholin tires last one done we'll just have a quick
00:20:58look around drop the car and press the button it's turning over but it's not firing
00:21:06there we go now it's gone you can barely hear it above the sound of the 62 aston martin turning on to pit road
00:21:13behind us and out comes ron fellows in 63 just ahead of the leader in gt1 as the leader in gt2 83 pulling out behind
00:21:23let's go back down to joe bradley yeah we speculated as to why the team lnt panels number 81 in the gt2
00:21:30class had been taken into its garage it was purely the team taking advantage of the safety car period
00:21:35and changing the brake pads on the car this is the kind of job the serviceable job that
00:21:40takes a little bit of time and this is the kind of time that they've been waiting for just waiting
00:21:45to be able to do this serviceable problem of changing the brakes because the brakes quite clearly
00:21:50wouldn't have seen at the end of the wrist and somebody else who uh took advantage element niche
00:21:55there coming into the pits even though he didn't have to he was about three laps ahead of schedule
00:22:00um but to free stop though isn't it depends where you get caught they've turned him around quick
00:22:06enough did they tire that car as well no i think it was just fuel no no no no they tried it as well
00:22:11because they driver changer yes that's right yeah they've uh that's right absolutely right so it's uh tom
00:22:16christensen again isn't it no it's dindo uh there's another 24-hour race going on at the moment
00:22:22we're keeping our eye on it's down at the uh nurburgring the adac zurich 24-hour race and it's
00:22:28still the porsche 911 gt3 of lucas law timo bernhard and mike rockenfeller who is leading from the similar
00:22:35car of jürgen alzen uvi alzen and claus ludwig along with christian apt that first and second and uh let's
00:22:42make it to porsche one two three mark bessing patrick simon and timo scheider uh who are two
00:22:48laps away there's a lap between first and second and two laps uh back for third position if you are
00:22:54just joining us this morning hello there uh this is radio lamont and hello to uh unbelievably hello to
00:23:02the guys in atlanta lee newton of porsche cars north america still there and listening and uh also
00:23:10people uh alan disha kenyan sorry disha kenyan sorry mate happy father's day to all you dads out
00:23:18there out in uh california he reminds us that it is in fact uh father's green light we've got green
00:23:25lights but not here no on the safety car the safety car is showing green so that means green next time
00:23:31around he'll pull off halfway down now he's here's where we get the confusion as in comes the aston martin
00:23:39comes in the 007 car graham tyler is down there watching that for us yeah the 007 coming in and uh
00:23:46getting fresh rubber from look of things or is it just an examination um no they are going to take
00:23:52the wheels off and have a look see um they've got in fact brake pads going i think on the aston 007
00:24:01meanwhile behind uh mike newton has come into hand the 25 car this is the the lola with the ar engine
00:24:09uh leaving the lmp2 class a number 25 car ray malik run and this is the uh lola mg which is now going to
00:24:17be driven by tommy erdos okay start the driver complete and uh completes another rotation for them
00:24:24we've got the team tyson advan porsche they're not featured heavily uh but still circulating the 93 car
00:24:32and uh for the moment at my end that's your lot i think uh that car is second in uh the category at
00:24:39the moment although it just seems to have got there by stealth the rml car having to be pushed backwards
00:24:43because the aston is too close it's not a problem there uh and while we're talking about father's day
00:24:48um the corvette guys have got happy father's day on their pit board that's been hung out which i do
00:24:54think is fantastic tommy erdos back into the freight um and uh just remind you that it's uh
00:25:01radio lamont 91.2 fm now we're about to get back underway again charles dressing jacksonville florida
00:25:09is still with us uh charles you just can't uh the seo have decided and in my view rightly so when you're
00:25:16coming down to indianapolis you can't have people slipping and sliding on oil we've seen in the past
00:25:21nightmare scenarios for people like alan mcnish coming into fast corners like the porsche curve
00:25:26and suddenly coming upon uh coming upon oil on the circuit so there's no real choice but to do this
00:25:31and neutralize the race for a little while i don't see how they could if you if you were a spectator
00:25:36at le mans you're lucky enough to be on the ground one of the things that you deserve to do for yourself
00:25:42is to go down there and watch those cars appear and that fast right-hander before indianapolis
00:25:47it is as though they are beamed down from some sort of space they just appear suddenly and to
00:25:53imagine any sort of uh viscosity uh measurable fluid or even what they call viscoplating which is dirt
00:26:00on the racetrack or dust in the middle of that right hander before indianapolis
00:26:06that's a terrifying start now chuck dressing is just for a moment drowned out as dindal capello
00:26:15sees the green flag at the start finish and uh it's gone eerily quiet up here on the grand stands
00:26:24as everybody's looking across to our right let's go down into the pit lane bill binny's car in trouble
00:26:30in the garage graham tyler has the man himself yeah my first chance have a word with bill said today
00:26:36he's been uh either in the car or out of sight when i've been in the garage up till now but bill
00:26:40it's uh it's this starter motor that's jammed on you yeah it's um it's one of those things that
00:26:45happens with the temperature and the heat and the vibration and they just go don't they so uh it's
00:26:50going to be a little while but uh we'll be back on track we're pretty pleased with the way other than
00:26:55that the car's running it's running very well nice to see you jira tirada aboard the car as well with
00:27:00a history yes he's doing great for us yeah he's putting up good times he just did his own doubles
00:27:05so we're really pleased and proud to have him it's a real pleasure i suppose if there is a plus right
00:27:09now it's that the 33 inter sport car that's behind you is also in the garage well i uh those are my old
00:27:16teammates so i wouldn't wish it on them but um it is a shame isn't it having said that i'm told that
00:27:22they're just leaving so uh perhaps that friendship will be tested again but that that was a great
00:27:27result for you a couple of years ago uh winning the class with uh with the fields yeah those are
00:27:33great guys and uh i really do if we don't do well i hope they do well but uh we're going to be in a
00:27:38dogfight having said that it's it's only 10 o'clock in the morning there's a long long way to go i mean
00:27:44we know uh aer engines don't break until hour 20 so we got a little ways to go before we see uh those
00:27:51sorts of issues and our drivetrain's doing well other than these uh niggly little starter motor and
00:27:55ancillary bits well let's hope this one doesn't break till our 24 plus one minute right absolutely
00:28:01i hope not thanks bill bill many there out of the number 24 lola zytek great battle out on the circuit
00:28:07between the leader and one of the pescarolo cars there it's it's all three of them it's the two
00:28:12pescarolos i mean they could really get they could really get mean here to john uh because you got the
00:28:16two pescarolos and they were sandwiching marco verno and marco decided he didn't particularly
00:28:20want to be the meat in that sandwich so he's extracted himself from it a bit like my bacon
00:28:25did earlier on from the sandwich but it's all right it's rescued it's okay everything's under
00:28:28control that's fine uh two oh nice photo up there for the two pescarolos uh hill uh justin in uh
00:28:35california says uh does the diesel give the audis more power uh not more power as such at least that's
00:28:42not what they're telling us they say about 650 break uh the way it's restricted at the moment but
00:28:47charles what it does give us is the big t and torque is what mr dressing torque is our friend
00:28:54and apparently it is your best friend if you happen to be driving a car with yellow or a red roller
00:28:59today because i just watched uh we're just watching the cars out on both sun those pescarolos
00:29:05very close to the uh being number eight car and he just just finally just powered by them going into the first
00:29:11chicane yeah and and you can you can just see those cars uh working so very well michael garner's in
00:29:19florida in the us watching speed at the moment says he likes the uh tie up between speed and radio
00:29:24lamont not the first time we've done it to be honest michael but thank you for your comments your
00:29:28regular speed commentators back uh in just under an hour's time i'm sorry we uh slightly crashed through
00:29:33the ad break uh at the top of the hour however we were just going back to green at the time that's
00:29:38just one of those things that happened but i'm glad that you're all back uh with us uh plenty of
00:29:43people in california where it's a little later in the evening here's an email from andy he said uh
00:29:48i've been up i watched the test today and uh qualifying before the race and i haven't slept since well
00:29:55so andy thanks very much indeed for for being with us and keep those emails coming in uh just uh one final
00:30:02one to studio at radiolemon.com uh to a good friend of radiolemon the director of operation and
00:30:07promotions at the chra the classic and historic racing association tim pendergast down in florida
00:30:15says cheers to the gun uh roller dawson graham t bradders trusses and everybody uh good to know that
00:30:22you're still there uh listening in and watching the speed coverage in florida now paul it looks like the
00:30:29audi has made good it's escape with marco verna at the wheel although in fairness that uh pescarolo
00:30:35there is trying to close him down but that's the 16 car that's not the car that's in second place
00:30:40but this potentially is the spoiler isn't it well that's exactly it i mean the pescas have been quite
00:30:43clever really because they've uh they've put their spoiler up they've protected their uh their main car
00:30:49the number 17. um the gaps as far as these audis are concerned hasn't changed a huge amount it's a
00:30:55i mean it's a it's a two lap difference uh still between uh no it has gone up three yes it's it's
00:31:04a tad over three laps the gap now that has helped the audi because it was um just two and three quarter
00:31:11laps before so that situation has uh has helped the audi and what i'm trying to work out at the same
00:31:16time is what's happened with the aston martin and the corvette and i think the aston has been helped
00:31:20as well what happened was if you remember the corvette 64 came in right at the start of the
00:31:26safety car period whereas the aston stayed out till it caught up with the safety car so it was going
00:31:33fast and then it was able to go into the pits when everybody else was going slowly anyway so i think
00:31:38that was a slightly clever move by the acid and possibly it was predictable what would happen to the
00:31:44corvette john still watching this battle the lead audi with the red roll hoops marco verna magic marco as
00:31:51we call him and manuel collard 11th position overall in the uh slightly more handicapped of the pescarolos
00:32:03now marco was having a big poo earlier on shaking his fist at a porsche driver who got in his way but
00:32:09now he's been released he is able to fight at a 41-0 three 41-0 last time around yeah that's not
00:32:16that quick i was wondering why it was such a slow lap because i thought it was fairly clear but you've
00:32:19just answered the question john it's traffic absolutely and collard is trying to hunt him down
00:32:24we'll keep our eyes on that but like introducing guests to our listeners ian wagstaff will be uh known as
00:32:31a name to many of our british and european listeners an author of some repute i think it's fair to say
00:32:37ian and uh welcome to radio le mans uh something that is very dear to everyone's here's heart for
00:32:43le mans in the 24 hours and uh you've got a new book coming out which is first of all for a good
00:32:48course it's charity um and it's for a very good charity secondly it's about the brits at le mans so
00:32:54quite a lot of the people who are listening out here are actually featured in it that's right john
00:32:58food yourself of course and the charity is in fact the motorist benevolent fund which
00:33:04industry benevolent funds so just like a great charity now how did this come about uh was it
00:33:09your idea or did the charity come to you i have to admit the there's a guy called gordon crease at the
00:33:13charity who's uh a motorsport fanatic himself and uh because it's the 100th anniversary of ben this year
00:33:19he actually came to me and said uh was it something i fancied doing and i didn't take a second to answer that
00:33:24one why what is there what have you found out that that makes this race held in the center of france
00:33:30not particularly easy even nowadays for us to get there there's not a major airport within an hour and
00:33:35a half's drive or thereabouts so you do have to drive down what is it that put this car so firmly
00:33:41in the sight of the bit the brits and particularly the english supporters oh i think you can go back to
00:33:46the original bentley's actually um because it was said when uh birkin was coming second in the
00:33:51pro grand prix and charles ferru said uh he knew that car was okay because it was bentley and i
00:33:56have seen the bentley's at the mall and the whole british thing has started off from the very beginning
00:34:00so uh and just continued hasn't it it truly is an amazing exodus from the south coast in the week
00:34:07coming up to le mans there's every single ferry terminal every queue that you sit in you go oh yeah
00:34:12yeah that lotus 7 uh that port yeah we know where all those guys are going that's right although i think
00:34:17there's one year when uh a tester also turned up at uh portsmouth and everybody ignored it because
00:34:21there was a great queue of c-type jaguars what's uh you've met some of the people um the brits of
00:34:27le mans covers people who've driven people who've been involved in teams but i know from talking to
00:34:32you that one of the the biggest surprises to you was just how many stories there there are from
00:34:38from the supporters and the enthusiasts point of view in fact there's probably a book there on
00:34:42its own oh that's right i mean there's a whole chapter on the enthusiasts i ought to have done
00:34:45the whole 32 chapter on the enthusiasts and forgotten the drivers really do you think it's that
00:34:50important well they're the guys who make it aren't they um people like beer mountain dot com and all
00:34:55those kind of guys oh yeah mr toad's in the book with his uh his formation team uh and the the shadow
00:35:00de piste artistes are here again this year i must mention them i think they're 20 year veterans of their
00:35:05little celebrations and all these all these little traditions that people have in the campsites they
00:35:09getting dressed up in uh dinner suits and serving each other food and all this sort of thing it's
00:35:13terribly terribly uh eccentric and english the tremendous tradition though he's also mentioned
00:35:18that the very first year a mr vernon pew and a miss pew who actually motored down of course they have
00:35:25so you know that's the original spectators i found and some guy whose name i can't remember who
00:35:30unfortunately sprained his leg around the back of the paddock yeah i wonder if there may have been i think
00:35:34there may have been some alcohol involved in that possibly uh one of the great traditions of le mans
00:35:40though is the fact that the the spectators have been a part of it and you know virtually corporate
00:35:44hospitality was was invented at le mans yeah i mean some of these spectators i've been talking to i mean
00:35:51you know 35 years yeah not not missing one i mean it's just great that they come that sort of times
00:35:57how can you let me just let this this uh gaggle of cars go through how can we get hold of the book and uh
00:36:04what's the best way to do it it's called the british at le mans it's called the british at le mans and
00:36:07i think the best way is to go along to the radio le mans shop where there's leaflets and you can buy
00:36:11it through radio le mans and pre-order it is there some kind of website that anyone can go to as well
00:36:17uh no there's um actually there's an mrp website that's motor racing publications and you can discover
00:36:23a bit about it um it's actually coming out next month july so i mean as i say the best thing probably to
00:36:28pre-order it by getting your leaflet from radio le mans and uh what we will do as well is put a link on
00:36:32the radio le mans.com website thanks for coming down and thank you very much for writing this book
00:36:37because it's it's great fun i've seen uh some proofs of it and it's great fun and it is certainly uh
00:36:43it's a good opportunity for you to bring them on and get some of your favorite drivers to sign
00:36:46because there's quite a lot of them still around because that's right in fact um marcus chambers who
00:36:50won the one and a half leader class in 1939 is interviewing him for it so yeah thanks very much
00:36:58you did and enjoy the rest of the weekend thanks for putting in wild staff the british at le mans is
00:37:03the name of the book and uh certainly a very ben the motor racing charity in the uk are uh certainly
00:37:12uh certainly worth supporting a quick question on some flags he says uh this is a chap called uh scott
00:37:18graves who's in the states and he says i don't follow sports car racing uh very much but i started to
00:37:24watch the race and got hooked and now i start to listen he says uh i i've been seeing a lot of blue
00:37:29flags what's what's that about and what happened with the ferrari with the wheel problems the ferrari
00:37:34with the wheel problems they took a chisel to it and literally cut out the center of the wheel and the
00:37:39blue flag is to tell drivers that there is a faster car approaching now at the moment we've got a slow
00:37:44car approaching paul on the pit street uh yes this is uh the second place uh tizan porsche uh this is
00:37:51reminiscent of about three or four years ago isn't it when uh uh there was a very slow car which had
00:37:55his bonnet uh or the front uh cover had blown up and uh the poor car has uh got some kind of
00:38:02mechanical problem which has arisen just as it's past the pit lane exit or pit lane entrance so he's
00:38:07gonna have to go uh all the way around and that car is the gt2 second place now also in gt2 the flying
00:38:16lizards seth nyman is down in the pit lane and graham tyler will have a little word hello graham
00:38:24oh now how bizarre is that i've just heard graham in my headphones and we try to pass down to him
00:38:28graham tyler let's try one spot oh yes oh there we go okay um seth uh flying lizards welcome back to
00:38:35le mans you've got a podium first time out it's been tough this year though it has been tough we had a lot
00:38:41of good luck last year and it hasn't held yet this year but there's still a lot of race to go i'm glad
00:38:47i'm glad you said yes because it's ever so easy to get despondent isn't it uh well you know it is if
00:38:54you're uh don't uh really uh deal with the fact that it's such a long race and so much can happen
00:39:02and the team works together to just keep everybody focused on you know for example now another six hours
00:39:08to go that makes it uh almost more than two of our normal races so uh plenty of things can still
00:39:16happen now the lizard motorsports team is based over in the west coast of america was it this race in
00:39:22particular that prompted you to get into sports car racing or were there other things well the portal
00:39:27player flying lizard team is based in uh sonoma county at the infinian raceway and i wouldn't say that
00:39:35le mans itself was the uh objective but it's certainly this kind of racing was the inspiration
00:39:44now i i first saw you i first saw you uh as a team at the daytona 24 hour race um uh in 2004 yeah that
00:39:56was a very exciting race uh i think the closest finish in the history of uh daytona unfortunately we needed
00:40:03about two more laps one thing i've always wanted to ask you and i never have to your face where on
00:40:09earth did you come up with the flying lizards um that's a deep dark secret there are only two people
00:40:17who know and um they are sworn to secrecy so if you were to share that with me i'd probably not make it
00:40:25home i think you probably would make it home but i don't know exactly what would happen when
00:40:33you can't ah okay we have this this theory about uh a rock band and a song well that's one of many
00:40:42interesting theories i've heard he's not giving it up he's very enigmatic this man he's giving away
00:40:49nothing he never will charming gentleman of this county thanks for talking to us and good luck for the
00:40:55dressing race thanks a lot there we go to hear from it what we do need to know graham as well last
00:41:01year the lizards came out with an absolutely stunning t-shirt design which uh they're produced
00:41:08in limited numbers which proved to me if proof were needed that they really got the whole lemont
00:41:12thing it was a an old art deco look-alike uh poster with the flying lizards car on i have heard but not
00:41:18seen the uh i've heard about but not seen this year's t-shirt and i'm told it's equally as stunning
00:41:24i will have words with jennifer hart the pr lady for the team and see if i can't um find one that may
00:41:31be left lying around somewhere for you i'm only a large now i've lost five kilos is that that'd be
00:41:36a us large so sort of right small small small market size for the europeans thanks graham on fm 91.2
00:41:45at the circuit and campsites
00:41:50and across the uk on sky channel 0157 radio le mans the sound of le sard all the action all the latest
00:42:00news from the pits and the paddock informed comments there's always been and always will be
00:42:06just one authority on the race and just one place to listen radio le mans you can't manage without it
00:42:16wrist tune for 2006 with evil magazine uh hugh chamberlain and joe bradley just before the
00:42:21break there welcome back if you're watching on speed tv paul trustwell is alongside me up here in the
00:42:26tribune yeah i'm just trying to reflect on what happened when the uh when the safety car came
00:42:31out and uh yes it it benefited those who were ahead uh rather than compromising those who were ahead
00:42:38when when you have a safety car in uh single seater racing or over racing it tends to compromise those
00:42:44who are ahead by squashing up all the gaps but uh what it's done is it's given you uh probably an extra
00:42:5030 seconds on the lead of the number eight audi over the uh pescarolo and it's also given the uh
00:42:58number 009 the aston martin uh an extra probably an extra minute and a half uh for the um for the
00:43:06aston martin over the corvette because uh that is if you if you're watching them on the circuit
00:43:12it's number 64 comes past you in fact uh no he's not coming just easy number 64 comes past you and then
00:43:17about 10 seconds later you get the aston coming past you now the trouble is the aston who's ahead
00:43:22and the corvette that's behind so that you kind of unwind the whole lap and so it works out to be
00:43:27about a three and a half minute lead that the aston now has over the corvette and it was a two and a
00:43:32half minute lead in lmgt2 graham tyler has news that will gladden the heart of pianos and indeed of
00:43:40english supporters graham sadly though what is good for them is at this time of the day quite often bad news for
00:43:46someone else uh yeah sadly so this is the team tyson car the number 93 for sure currently running
00:43:53second in the lmgt2 it's philip collin the american driver along with the two japanese philip brought the
00:43:59car in complaining of gear selection problems and they've been poking and prodding and turning wheels
00:44:04and kicking and probably swearing for all i know and uh the result is they've got nowhere with it so
00:44:10they're pushing it into the garage for a more comprehensive look now they only had about a 40
00:44:16second advantage over the next car in cars in class which was the uh the remaining panos the number 77
00:44:23car of englishman lawrence tomlinson so i'm going to head down there and uh see if the smiles have broken
00:44:28out yet yeah that car well you can just see by the body language of the mechanics who were working on it
00:44:35it's just what they don't need at this time as chuck dressing was saying the fatigue has really set in
00:44:43you've got through the night but then you've got the whole of the morning and into the afternoon and
00:44:48don't forget this race started an hour later yesterday so it will finish an hour later and tommy
00:44:55heard us almost getting together with that lnt panos there's a whole gaggle of cars go under the dunlop
00:45:03bridge the creation auto sportive car was working its way through and one of the pescarolos and tommy
00:45:10heard us rightly staying well out of all of that action the aston's in there as well uh sorry it's
00:45:17that is in fact liz halliday on the 33 car not tommy heard us my eyes deceiving me this morning in the
00:45:23sunshine the uh nighttime hours have gone and everyone's making mistakes my apologies and thank
00:45:30you to jim roller and joe bradley who are both giving me quizzical looks one physically and one
00:45:36in my ear as we were watching that the in my defense i do have sunglasses on at the moment to try and stop
00:45:43the glare and the color schemes are completely different but the designs are similar is that because
00:45:49your future's so bright you gotta wear shades oh thank you very much indeed yes moving right
00:45:56along here i'll get me caught and leave thanks very thanks very much for that uh let's have it in the
00:46:01intersport team actually have not had the best of luck but are still in there with a shout the lmp2
00:46:10category has often been as uh jim likes to see last man standing the biddy car just behind them there the 24
00:46:16car in the background with the very prominent scottish sole tire on the front of it and
00:46:24just down uh in the pit lane at the moment great tyler is dying absolutely dying to stick his microphone
00:46:34into this conversation between two of the greats henry pescaroro and norbert singer together in the pit
00:46:42lane norbert's new book is out as well michael cotton has co-written a phenomenal tome called 24 16
00:46:5224 win 24 hours 16 wins which is the behind the scenes story told by norbert singer in his own words
00:47:00something like 16 hours of tape recordings of those two talking together which i would love to get my
00:47:07hands on and turn into some kind of audio and a lot of backs back uh backroom secrets from the man who
00:47:15masterminded porsche's uh victories here at le mans over the years and uh we were talking about this
00:47:20on radio le mans yesterday jim roller who's a a massive porsche fan and in fact who owns a rather special
00:47:26porsche 911 don't you yes i do go on tell everybody it's a 1973 it was the it was uh purported to be the
00:47:33first car that porsche gave to al over and used to be his uh everyday driver and um then uh don't
00:47:41worry paul i'm not breaking anything no no it's just don't worry don't worry and then uh a friend of
00:47:48mine who's a photographer purchased the car from al and i've recently purchased it purchased it from him
00:47:53it's a 73 911s with a 2.7 liter magnesium engine and uh graham everett uh from everett motorsports
00:48:00in Atlanta doing a ground-up restoration for me uh we've taken it right down to the frame and uh
00:48:07powder-coated everything and he took total rebuild on the engine and graham used to build all of john paul
00:48:13engines back in the halcyon days of ipson 81 and 82 so he's got a lot of experience and doing it
00:48:19i think i should have the car in about another month and i just can't i'm counting the days as we would
00:48:24say about graham everett what he doesn't know about porsches and particularly porsche engines you could
00:48:28write on the back of a postage stamp and still have room for the premiership he's forgotten more
00:48:32than most people know no but singer though what uh i didn't know until i read the book was uh he
00:48:38follows a long line of porsche engineers who are massively into photography and norbert singer's
00:48:46heroes weren't sports car drivers they were f1 drivers people like jim clark and jackie stewart
00:48:50he followed the f1 circus for quite a while in his own time and some of his pictures particularly
00:48:55places like uh monaco and zandvoort of the mid to late 1960s uh f1 cars just before the wings really
00:49:02started coming in the elegant cigar shaped cars are absolutely outstanding not just for an amateur
00:49:09they're outstanding and they would grace any collection and there's a lot of pictures in that
00:49:14book of those type and also of course behind the scenes at porsche uh that has not been seen before
00:49:20uh it's called 24 16 it's the autobiography of uh 16 wins by norbert singer and a little help from
00:49:28michael cotton and it is available right now i thoroughly thoroughly recommend it into the pit
00:49:34lane joe bradley has the 87 scuderia across ferrari with him well as you know john i have an affinity to
00:49:40this car because this is the car i chose in my opinion would win the gt2 class it's been very competitive
00:49:46if it wasn't for that uh wheel bonding itself to a rear hub uh very early this morning and then
00:49:51the team had taking a couple of hours nearly to uh chisel the actual wheel off then this car would
00:49:57have been right in the thick of it however it's uh it's regaining its position and uh and making good
00:50:02progress back up the field at the moment we've had uh chris niacos jumping out of the car and handing
00:50:10the car over i think it will be to uh tim mullen i think just taking the car over now let's have a
00:50:17look at the eyes you're quite familiar with tim's helmet that is indeed tim mullen who's been well
00:50:22rested during the night car about to come off its jacks you'll hear at any moment and then you'll
00:50:29hear that blue beautiful sound of that ferrari motor about to fire up let's get behind the car
00:50:37let's get behind those exhaust pipes let's just do that little bit of oil replenishment going in as
00:50:43a final serviceable item and tim mullen will be getting the indication to fire that car he starts
00:50:53it it turns over it's is it gonna fire the engine's turning on the on the starter motor
00:51:00and we've got a little bit of a worry ah there it is
00:51:10down at graham thanks joe yeah there is a normal signal at this end is he's been spending a bit of
00:51:17time in the 76 garage where a factory driver roman dumar is sharing raymond narek's car with raymond
00:51:24and with luca richard telly now uh uh roman the car is up on axle stands and they're looking for an oil
00:51:30leak yeah we have a problem with uh we don't know exactly now with the engine as the oil is going out
00:51:38i think from the gearbox side so with a joint so now they put out the gearbox and then we check if they
00:51:46can repair again over in america while we've got you you've been running in the new porsche spider
00:51:53the lmp2 car you enjoy your races in that yeah for sure it's uh it's really a nice car and now to have
00:52:01win the first time overall you know it was a it was a big pleasure for us i mean us it's my porsche and
00:52:10myself my teammates and all the group was working really well already there's a lot of talk of that
00:52:16car being entered for le mans next year do you think it's a car that would soon get on the track
00:52:23i cannot hear you very well but i think you spoke about entering this car next year and
00:52:29really right now i don't know it's a lot of people who say blah blah blah but i cannot say me anything
00:52:34because really i don't know anything so i think now we are ready to we are really focused to continue
00:52:42the season uh and try to win the class and why not again overworld but uh for next year it's another
00:52:50story thanks roman roman duma there never a man to say blah blah blah uh never ask a driver about uh
00:52:57about strategy questions update coming up uh in a little moment's time i want to take a couple of
00:53:02emails studio at radiolemon.com manny in seattle says why don't they use f1 cars in the 24 money
00:53:09come on answer your own question how many times have you watched the f1 race they do an hour and 35
00:53:15an hour and 20 minutes they can't even get the full field to the end of that we'd be sitting twiddling
00:53:20our thumbs now or already on our way back to cali if we had a field full of f1 cars we did try f1
00:53:26engines here a few years ago about 10 years ago we had the lowest finishes in living memory the
00:53:32lowest amount of finishes in living memory and since the 1930s in fact and there was an uh and
00:53:38the lowest number of starters as well only 28 started thank you craim uh who is mr encyclopedia and
00:53:44i also had a question about bill binny and i'm sorry i can't remember uh i can't find your email who uh
00:53:49sent that in asking why bill binny who is entered as an american has a sole tire the uh st andrews cost the
00:53:55scottish emblem on the front of his car and that is because he claims scottish heritage does he not
00:53:59mr bradley he was born in glasgow although he moved across to the states uh when he was uh quite
00:54:07young and has spent quite a lot of time of course in the states although his full racing season this
00:54:11year is in europe with the lemont series and the lemont itself and he's very very proud of his scottish
00:54:17heritage the hourly update is next paul trusswell's on standby this is radio lemont and speed if there's
00:54:23cars on the track we're there interviews with the people at matter but we're also up for a giggle
00:54:29music entertainment and information a complete radio station for the 24 hours from tuesday to sunday
00:54:36the front row formula radio lemont the hourly updates are brought to you by audi celebrating 25 years of
00:54:44quattro
00:54:5317 hours and 33 minutes on the watch still the number eight audi is uh in the lead of the race as uh indeed
00:55:01it has been since uh about uh what time was it it was uh quarters and eight yesterday evening uh with
00:55:08276 laps on the board and the number 17 pescarolo sebastian love driving in second place uh just over
00:55:16three laps behind uh so that's a good deal uh in third place number seven the audi of uh ronaldo capello who's
00:55:24driving it at the moment uh 264 laps on the board for him so uh he's kind of clawed a lap back on the pescarolo uh he was
00:55:3310 laps behind it he's only nine laps behind it now but still 12 laps behind the uh leading car
00:55:39fourth place is still the aston martin number 009 pedro larmi now at the wheel of that car 260 laps
00:55:46on the board for that and uh still just short of a full lap clear of the second placed uh gt1 car the
00:55:54number 64 corvette of oliver gavin so uh oliver gavin in number 64 in fifth place in sixth place number
00:56:0125 is the mg of tommy erdos he's done 257 laps in seventh place 007 the second of the aston martins
00:56:09in the hands of andrea pecini at the moment with 253 laps on the board in eighth place number 72 is
00:56:16the corvette c5r of patrice who's driving it at the moment 251 laps completed and in ninth place number 62
00:56:24the gm the aston martin with nelson pique jr at the moment also with 251
00:56:30laps on the board and uh opportunities there perhaps for uh nelson to improve his position
00:56:35because he's uh just a minute behind and closing on the luke alfon aventure um corvette and spotted
00:56:43that one that's a gap we have to monitor uh in tenth place the corvette still of ron fellows number 63
00:56:49with 250 laps on the board as far as the gt2 category is concerned the leader there is still the cycle
00:56:55porsche at number 83 dominic farmbacher again putting in one of those stirring little drives where he pulls
00:56:59away from the rest of the field he's got this eight lap advantage now over the second place car in that
00:57:05category the number 81 panos with tom kimber smith at the wheel and then third in the class although
00:57:12it's in the pits receiving treatment the number 93 tazan team porsche number uh 93 being uh driven by
00:57:19philip collin and uh he's done 231 laps and shortly i suspect well not that shortly because he's uh still
00:57:27got another nine laps to uh to pull back so that's going to be about 40 minutes before that happens
00:57:32uh so perhaps by the next uh um early update if the uh 93 porsche hasn't got out then we'll have a
00:57:39change but it's going to take uh 45 minutes to an hour before the change happens number 89 it is the uh
00:57:46porsche who which stands to uh benefit and that's the saber automotive porsche with uh xavier pompadue
00:57:52during the driving at the moment that's the hourly update six hours 23 minutes and 45 seconds to go
00:57:58audi foresprung dirk technic improved and all the same and all the same this is radio free le mans
00:58:08down to joe bradley in the pit lane marco verner is just out of the lead guys handed it off to
00:58:13emmanuel peril welcome back to our speed tv viewers jaw yeah thanks john marco verner's just
00:58:19discussing tire problems or tire issues with with his tire technician we'll get a word with marco i'm
00:58:26sure he uh he'll treat his michelin tire man uh with a bit more importance than uh speaking to radio
00:58:32le mans and uh once we get a chance to chat to him we'll uh we'll get the insight marco quick word for
00:58:39radio le mans um the car's going well it seems to be going like clockwork but what's it like behind the
00:58:45scenes fantastic drive so i enjoyed a lot so the diesel the tdi it's unbelievable uh it's the best
00:58:52car what i drove here in le mans it's so funny it was a really good morning for me and everything
00:58:57it's okay the tires working very well i was thinking about the four stints but the guys me it's okay
00:59:04free is enough and everything it's okay so we have a good lead and the gap is okay we are happy i saw you
00:59:10looking at the tires there with the michelin tire guy is there any particular concerns with now that
00:59:15the sun is up and the temperature is going to rise with tire wear maybe yeah that was just interesting
00:59:20for me have a look uh if the first thing this may be possible but now it's going uh hotter and hotter
00:59:26again and uh no risk in this moment we have a good gap and no risk good chef thanks marco marco verner
00:59:33there the current leader manuel i pirro at the wheel of the number eight audi as i said and we're going
00:59:38back down the pit lane winging down the pit lane a grim tire yeah thanks we've had the uh creation
00:59:42auto sportive car come in this is the number nine car with a judd engine and uh it looked to be a
00:59:48fairly straightforward pit stop but as have been so many this year at le mans when they went to fire
00:59:53the engine up again nothing happened so jamie campbell walters still sitting in the car but now being
00:59:59pushed into the garage i'll get some more information from and he won't tell me we'll try and get away oh here's
01:00:06fiona miller will have the uh tell me a little bit about what's going on perhaps well not sure if
01:00:12it's a starter motor or battery problem so they decided obviously bring it back in into the garage
01:00:17a couple more things they were going to do in the next stop like put some oil in and uh wash uh clean
01:00:23out the radiators so they're going to take this opportunity to do all that at once and hopefully get
01:00:27it back out again thanks fiona the other automotive uh auto sportive rather uh just explaining that
01:00:37there's an electrical problem there as well as some routine maintenance needed
01:00:42thank you very much gentlemen down there in the pit lane and uh payroll leads then from sebastian lobe
01:00:49as we're coming into another pit stop time luke alfonda adventures the 72 corvette uh with uh
01:01:00gusla getting out of that car very quick stop patrick gusla already out oh stalls the car the
01:01:09replacement driver i think that's not sure i was gonna make a call as to who i thought that was
01:01:15getting in the car yeah it's worth keeping an eye on that because the uh the aston which has just
01:01:19come in in the uh in the background there is on the same lap as the corvette uh we sort of picked that
01:01:25up as we were going through the uh the rundown uh it was polycon who gave over to gusla so that was
01:01:37i didn't catch that john did you polycons in the car
01:01:39uh sorry i've just been deafened by the uh 27 miracle motorbike garage what i was trying to get
01:01:48over to you was that it was your own polycon who handed over to patrick gusla at the last lot of
01:01:54driver rotations so it may well be luke alfant who's headed into that car now i did think it was the
01:02:00boss but i paused just i was about to say it's the boss who's just stalled it but i wanted to say that
01:02:05really yeah well the the the possibility exists for that car what i'm trying to say is the the
01:02:10the possibility exists for that car to be caught by the aston martin of the uh team modena or russian age
01:02:17racing the number 62 car which has got nelson pique jr uh nelson angelo pique in it um which
01:02:24has just rejoined without just nelson angelo pique because he's sitting in the garage david brabham
01:02:29taking it over so that's actually on a chase uh that will be four position they're on the same
01:02:34lap uh and we'll see what the uh gap is when they come around because obviously they've both just
01:02:38been in the pits and we haven't got timing to tell us what the uh gap was as they came out of the pits
01:02:42but that's the closest battle on the circuit that we can look out for between 72 and 62.
01:02:48tommy erdos is in the pits in the 25 lola aer and this looks extremely routine
01:02:57the rml guy is just backing off at the car in fact joe and it's it's already all done
01:03:02john not you you've heard phil barker's whistle there just uh indicating to the fuel guys
01:03:06that's enough tommy erdos in the lead lmp2 car is that what that was yeah that was phil barker
01:03:12at the front of the car and he has a whistle to let everybody know when the fuel hose comes out so
01:03:17if they need to do work that's where they can do it from absolutely well it's to indicate to the
01:03:22fuel man i think primarily but obviously everyone else knows as well that that's that's it on the fueler
01:03:27and uh what didn't happen was no one else went to work on the car
01:03:33the politicians take on fuel no need for any tires and tommy erdos stays in the car
01:03:38gonna rattle through a few emails jeff chambers boulder colorado uh some very very nice comments
01:03:45about our coverage on speed jeff thank you very much very much indeed for that uh and uh how fast
01:03:53fast as the lambo is it as quick as the other gt car uh not quite but then again it's uh not uh
01:04:00quite as developed as that car the japanese lamborghini owners club have brought that car
01:04:06into it does the audi have traction control yet didn't have it at sebring not working properly or do
01:04:14the drivers still have to tread carefully on the right hand pedal says uh andrew safir from uh where
01:04:22is he oh he's from he's from somewhere very sick somewhere the scripts research institute department
01:04:28of immunology what do you know about traction control of the audi uh i don't know anything about
01:04:32the audi specifically only that it is with it is allowed within the regulations provided it works on
01:04:38the engine correct um it's not allowed to work on the wheels but it is allowed to work on the engine
01:04:42presumably you're allowed to have a sensor on the wheels to activate it i don't know enough about
01:04:48electronics um what you're not allowed to have is abs right and you're not allowed to have four-wheel
01:04:54drive you're not allowed to have four-wheel steer but um apart from that it's just like an ordinary
01:04:58road car but the audi specifically uh did have an issue with uh all the traction control um and i don't know
01:05:05what uh what um variety of it they've been running today 650 brake horse 1100 newton meters of torque
01:05:15um you need something really as well as a lot of skill quite frankly uh grim tyler is down in the
01:05:22pinwheel graham what you got for us uh i've got a lamborghini we just had a perfect timing just had an
01:05:27email correspondent asking about it so very politely because the japanese are nothing if not polite they've
01:05:33brought the car in for me to have a look at again uh it really does look splendid it's it's primarily
01:05:38black if you've not been uh picking up any shots of it on on track as uh john was saying brought over
01:05:44by the japanese lamborghini owners club and uh crewed by two japanese drivers yasutake hinoi and koji
01:05:51yamanishi yamanishi yamanishi has just got out of the car but uh happily for me
01:05:58that sounds fabulous marco apicella who's taken the car over so i don't have to struggle through a
01:06:03third japanese name um no it hasn't to be honest set the track alight but they have done remarkably well
01:06:09first time a lamborghini has ever got into the race here at le mans and here we are just uh six
01:06:15hours or so from the end and puts that all and it's still going well meanwhile gt1 back is in the pit lane
01:06:25we've got gt one runners into the pit lane the zero zero nine car comes on pit road
01:06:30immediately after the 64 corvette so the pratt miller guys go to in direct competition with
01:06:36the pro drive aston martin crew right now they're almost a full lap apart right now but uh that's
01:06:43not going to stop them uh indulging themselves in uh who's going to win this pit stop competition
01:06:50the corvette was just ahead of the aston martin and the corvette the corvette is now taking
01:06:56on tires now the aston takes on tires the corvette will want to steer ahead of the aston on the
01:07:03on its lead lap from it we're just about finished the corvette we're just about
01:07:10and that's more like it i'm actually breathing in rubber smoke off that aston martin now that's what
01:07:16i came here for you know what that was absolutely synchronized pit stops two different teams two
01:07:23different cars a v8 and a v12 and they got out exactly together the corvette stairs just ahead of the aston
01:07:29which means it's on the very tail end of the lead lap meantime in comes the number seven audi third
01:07:35place dindo capello brings the yellow cowl car down along pit road joe bradley will amble that way
01:07:41but this looks routine joe no real worries there no sorry john can't move because uh we're expecting
01:07:47the 63 corvette in all right we're kind of being corralled we'll watch this one for you uh the tail lights
01:07:54come on telling me that dindo's got his foot on the brake he's ready to pull out there's tires that have not even
01:07:58been brought out michelin technician waved them away very early and it's only surrounded now by
01:08:05television and stills cameramen and out with no force no muss goes the diesel tdi power back into third
01:08:14place at the 74th running of le mans uh this is uh rockwell texas jacob says hello uh we've got to
01:08:23columbus ohio austin smith now on the audi everyone wants to know where is all the black smoke now the
01:08:31sound of an engine run by sandpaper it says that's all he he has if they had radio in them i bet the
01:08:37crowd could hear it when it goes by i think you're probably right no black smoke on the car you make
01:08:42a good point though austin from compass ohio no black smoke for two reasons one because there is
01:08:49little or no unbent unburnt diesel fuel coming out do you remember what audi did with fsi technology for
01:08:55the gasoline engine they basically maximized the energy output they burned every last drop of gasoline
01:09:02and petrol that went into that cylinder so that they got more mileage and more power the same sort of
01:09:09thinking has been applied to diesel come normally just compression ignition engines what they're
01:09:14trying to do is ensure that all of that diesel charge is being used and they're using some very
01:09:19clever technology which is already appearing in audi road cars the new q7 is going to have a three
01:09:25liter what they call pizza a pizza injection which means that the diesel actually gets not just one
01:09:32shot of it but up to four five six shots of diesel exactly measured and then just for good
01:09:37measure in the race engine they've also got a little glow plug that can just fire off the last
01:09:42of any residual so that first of all means that it's an extremely efficient combustion procedure so
01:09:48that we get a big nice big explosion and a big controlled burn but also the car has got a particular
01:09:54filter on it as well which here in europe is part of the latest emission regulations that's keeping diesels
01:09:59really right ahead of all of the technologies as far as automotive engineering is concerned you can keep
01:10:06your price i'm afraid those of you in the states because uh if you're lucky it'll do 40 miles to
01:10:12the gallon and you've got to find somewhere to bury the batteries after a hundred thousand miles we've
01:10:16got diesel engines here that will do 40 and 50 miles to the gallon all day and all night and also can
01:10:22produce 650 brake horsepower it's the future embrace it thanks austin for that uh we are coming towards the end
01:10:31of our time with speed and it will be uh the usual commentators who'll pick up after the
01:10:39the break we'll hand to them in about 10 minutes time so let's have a quick wrap up of where we are
01:10:44at the moment paul trusswell pours over the screen and his notebook which is
01:10:49no you've got plenty left you're barely a third into that you've timed your notebook perfectly this year
01:10:54i can do another 24 hours at least the moment can didn't about me but no the uh the audi continues
01:11:02to leave the number eight and uh in second place still sebastian love and he's still just over oh in
01:11:10fact yes he's just over three laps behind uh less than four but just over three laps behind uh capello
01:11:18still nine laps behind the pescarolo in third place in fourth place this battle between aston and uh
01:11:26corvette which is continuing in the pits it's out on the track um i bet at the end of the race whoever
01:11:31wins there'll be a race of the car park just to see who gets to the car park and then they'll say
01:11:34doubler quits to see who can get the tents down first there at the moment it's uh it's advantage aston
01:11:41but don't bet on it there's a long way to go uh the mg it's going so well and then is the aston uh
01:11:48007 which is coming into the pits and uh that's uh andrea puccini who's coming in for his pit stop
01:11:55he's going well and we can go down to graham for news on the pit stop it's true i have to make your
01:12:00yeah i'm right now with the 007 car it's uh having a change of driver too it's uh puccini who's getting
01:12:06out of the car and handing the car to thomas enga right now the fuel is going in it's getting a windscreen
01:12:16wash and it's going to take on tires to full pit stop for the 007 aston it goes up on its jacks now
01:12:25that's what you can hear in the background and we get front tires going on now we go to the back
01:12:31show to showers of uh carbon dust as the jackhammers blow the dust
01:12:42and that beautiful looking that's not this back out with thomas engor of the wheel
01:12:47oliver gavin corvette racing memories might be an obvious question but would be last year be your
01:12:53favorite memory yeah i would say it is my favorite memory because it was such a hard race um racing
01:13:01for 22 hours flat out trying to beat the aston martins um was was a tough deal and and also the
01:13:10the fact it was just so hot throughout the whole race um it when you've got to fight so hard for
01:13:16something when you actually succeed and you win it makes it so much sweeter
01:13:20uh it was uh it was a fantastic achievement for everybody because we were really up against it
01:13:27with a brand new car and we'd we'd come to the test day and and to be perfectly honest the car was a
01:13:32real handful and we went away scratching our heads and really wondering well you know we're gonna have
01:13:37a tough 24 hours but as always the engineers did a brilliant job all the mechanics worked extremely hard
01:13:43over that week off and they've really put their thinking caps on and came back with a with a far
01:13:48better car and a car that was the least comfortable for us to drive maybe not on the ultimate pace of
01:13:54the the aston martins but the the the weather was on our side and a little bit of luck and uh we had
01:14:03we had a few moments and a few bits and pieces that didn't quite work out for us but nothing that was
01:14:07terminal nothing that was going to really stop us in our tracks and and we managed to overcome all
01:14:14those little hurdles and uh ended up coming away with a fantastic win and and for us to come here
01:14:20and win with the c6 in his first year with very little development with very little testing i think
01:14:25it's a testament to corvette racing and everybody's hard work that's ollie gavin and another gm chevy corvette
01:14:32motorsport memory chevy corvette america sports car then now and always and that is just about it
