00:00you're watching the 7 Peugeot 908 of Jacques Villeneuve has just been serviced and sent
00:13and so far all going well for the French Canadian massive pressure coming into this race and he
00:20really did feel it Dorsey because he has no experience here at Le Mans has limited experience
00:25in that new car as do all the other drivers so it was a big responsibility to take to the wheel
00:31during the hours of darkness absolutely the first time you do that you question your sanity but
00:36it comes around to you it's not as bad as you would think we're back folks welcome back to
00:41Speeds live and continuing coverage of the Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans, Diffie Dorsey Schrader with
00:48you here Justin Bell and Chris Neville and we're with you right through until the checkered flag
00:53and beyond we've got 13 and a half hours of continuous coverage right now 17 and a half
00:59hours of total coverage of this year's great race it is wonderful to be back the crowd is bigger than
01:06ever and there you have it 4.15 local time in the morning it was a good email question before are you
01:14guys really there yes we are really here we come each and every year and it really is a magnificent
01:21experience if you plan on building in a European summer vacation and you're a sports car nut if
01:28you're watching there's a good chance that you are maybe build this into your plans one year to come
01:34to circuit de la sarthe Le Mans it's not that far to drive it's a very quick train right on the TGV
01:44southwest of Paris and it really is just one of those magnificent events like going to the Daytona 500
01:51the Indy 500 any of those marquee events it is one to check off your list I can't quite see the number but
02:00I think this is the Binnie car this is Bill Binnie's car it's the lead car in class it is there it is as they
02:06service it oh and Chris Buncombe was in this car at the time of pitting and has done a very nice job it is the
02:17lead car however they are being hunted down by the Courage the 35 Courage is doing a very nice job with
02:26Jacques Nicolet behind the wheel the Saint-Saulnier Racing Courage AER is really starting to hunt Bill
02:34Binnie's car down and they've taken the rear bodywork off not a good sign if you're being hunted down
02:41that's going to take extra time as they look for some sort of problem at the back of the car
02:45see one of the mechanics on the left side of the engine working away well that's the lead car in
02:54LMP2 the lead car in GT2 is of course the lead car in the American Le Mans series GT2 category
03:01it's the Risi Competizione Ferrari 430 and Jolly Mollum has just stepped from the cockpit
03:06that's correct Lee that car was just in while we were at break Johnny you just had a good stint
03:12since that door problem earlier in the race the number seven or the number 97 just hasn't missed
03:18a beat so far I mean the car's been fantastic I mean my first stint we did a double we doubled all
03:23the way through and I really enjoyed it actually it's always nice driving when you got P1 on the
03:29board and then that last stint was just a nightmare with traffic I don't think I got well I know I didn't
03:33get a single clear lap it was really really tough with and offline it's really greasy so I had one of
03:39those nightmare situations at night where you just kept tripping over GT1 cars that weren't being
03:44driven particularly well but the car is absolutely brilliant hasn't missed a beat so far it feels
03:49great so fingers crossed we can keep it going to the end Jamie and Mika have been such a strong pair
03:56what does it mean to you to be invited to participate with them oh it's just a privilege to be honest
04:00to drive with them I mean I was quite pleased with the first double stint because obviously when I got
04:06out the car that I'd actually managed to do the cars fast step up to that point it didn't take
04:11Jamie too long to knock two or three tenths off it but it's just kind of nice to be in the same
04:15ballpark as them and I'm just enjoying driving with two guys that not only are bloody quick but
04:21are also really really good guys and the whole team is just fantastic well it's Ferrari's 60th
04:26anniversary what would that mean for them to get a win at LeBron I'll tell you that was a real
04:30strange situation the right side window actually came out of its framework and rather than take
04:36the time to try to fix it because they didn't understand quite honestly why it had done that
04:40they just took the whole door off two little pins were pulled and they replaced the whole door mirror
04:45our window and all that's very uh it was quite humble of Johnny there to say it's a privilege to
04:51drive with those guys I know Johnny quite well and I know that he really means that but in effect
04:56he's actually the most experienced guy at Le Mans in that car Salo's only had one appearance here he
05:02didn't even drive during the race and Jamie Mello's only had one appearance here as well
05:08Johnny's had four this is his fifth start and on debut he stood on the podium in class in GT2
05:16and uh he finished second there so it's a great combination Justin
05:20well I'm down with the Fernandez Zytek and they have as we know they came in the garage with
05:29with something unspecified but it's obviously very obvious right now they had a rear right
05:36wheel bearing seize up out on the track which you know that causes all sorts of problems and the
05:42driver soon knows about it so they've come in and it's turned into quite a lengthy uh job they've helped
05:48you know they've got to remove the entire rear right corner at first they thought they'd damaged
05:53an upright with a little running over the curbs or something they thought they might have hit a hole
05:57um but what they're also doing is making the most of the stop and doing all sorts of other maintenance
06:03they've had the front end off I've seen them they've changed pads they you know when a car comes in
06:08at this stage anytime after 12 hours the brake change and and often the the uh the disc the rotor
06:17and the pad change is scheduled between 12 and 14 hours so this is the perfect time you'd rather you
06:23didn't have this perfect opportunity this window but it's what they're making the most of it so
06:27they should once again be clean in terms of major maintenance for the 24 hours through to the end so
06:33no sign of Adrian I'm sure he's uh monitoring it but there are no drivers near the car well that's
06:38just being smart there you're right I mean if you know it's going to take you say 20 minutes to
06:42fix something broken fix all the things that aren't broken at the same time and guess what they've
06:48been leapfrogged by the sister Zytek Michael Verges who almost hit Adrian Fernandez at the beginning of
06:56the race is now up into the top three in LMP two a reminder for you that Wednesday at nine it is
07:19now this is a very popular show on the network many of you watch it it's all about losing the race
07:26you lose your ride very exciting and it all peaks on the quarter mile track we're back welcome back
07:34we just missed just by the skin of our teeth the 009 Aston Martin pit stop Chris I know you observed
07:41it what went down yeah David Brabham stayed behind the wheel he just took fuel now he did have the lead
07:47by about 20 seconds we talked earlier when Inga got behind the wheel of the 007 that these two cars
07:53were going to be swapping back and forth as they were in pit lane so Inga back out in the lead of the
07:57GT1 just watching the pit stops between the Aston Martin and also Jan Magnussen was in these two teams
08:03both just very precise in their pit stops so fierce battles on the racetrack between the cars and the
08:09drivers great battles in pit lane between the two crews but really the relationship between the two
08:14crews it is pretty neat too just a few years ago these two crews decided let's start having some
08:20go-kart races we spent a lot of time in France for a couple weeks before this race so a few years ago
08:26they started doing an annual go-kart race two years ago the Corvette boys were out front Dan Binks was in
08:33the lead and actually got flipped up and landed on his head before the race now he was okay but the Aston
08:38Martin team did win that race this week Binks got back at him and won the race let me tell you a
08:45little bit more about Aston Martin and particularly that 009 on the same lap this is a little freaky on
08:52the same lap both Alan McNish and David Brabham set their respective fastest laps in that car and for
08:59their classes the fastest lap of the race David Brabham laid down a 350.3 McNish a 327.2 it's 4.30 in the
09:11morning and these guys have laid down the fastest laps of the race in their respective classes two great
09:18friends two great drivers two unbelievable laps at this time of the night superb driving Dorsey
09:26I would say but this is when you can go really quick cool air cool dense air and the driver's very
09:32relaxed right now sometimes the fact that you cannot see as well focuses you on what you do need
09:37to see and you can go really quick Chris made a great point earlier that it's the 60th anniversary
09:43for Ferrari and a very significant year well it's also a significant year in the Gurney family 40 years ago
09:52take a look at this Le Mans 67 certainly was a terrific year
10:03I could tell that it was almost the USA against Europe that was the feeling among the crowds and
10:11uh that I think was my 10th attempt at the Le Mans 24-hour race so when we finally won it AJ and I did it
10:23and Ford Motor Company uh sort of a all yank outfit it meant a great deal to us
10:31in a way uh that car sort of broke the rules it wasn't light it was on the heavy side it uh it wasn't austere
10:43it was pretty comfortable in there and it was kind of like a regular passenger car in many ways and yet
10:49it uh we broke the index of performance for efficiency which usually was held by a small like a two-place
10:56uh french car and um it was just a a tremendously powerful victory the spraying of of the champagne
11:09that was uh just one of those things that comes to mind uh you hadn't planned it but there it is and
11:17and it happens and everybody seemed to love it so there was a the beginning of a tradition
11:22only one week after his 67 Le Mans win Dan was victorious at the Belgian Grand Prix with his
11:30all-american racers eagle becoming the first and only American to drive a car of his own construction
11:36to an F1 victory lane and he did so with the fastest race speed ever recorded at a Grand Prix
11:42at that time in just seven days Gurney had delivered a truly all-american performance
11:48on a world stage and it's one that's unlikely to be duplicated it's fun to look back on those days
11:59well ironically that car competed again here at Le Mans this morning right before the start of this
12:06race in the historic race you can always tell that car lee amongst any other ford gt40 it has a bubble on
12:13the right side up on the roof it's the only one of the kind and that was because Dan Gurney is so tall
12:18his head wouldn't fit without it well hopefully you're watching Dan back in California and your
12:24son Alex and what a uh what a thrill that must have been to look back at there know that you've left
12:30your mark on Le Mans and how great your uh your son Alex is performing at the moment in sports cars in
12:36the Rolex uh sports car series two wins this season to Alex he's on a real roll at the moment this is
12:43the roll center racing pescarolo judd it does not have the same aerodynamic updates as the works
12:50pescarolos Martin short said that's okay we love this car we love the power plant it's going well
12:56great to be running in prototype one enjoyed their time with the radical program and the project but
13:03it just didn't quite work out and they said boy this pescarolo is quite the car in fact it is the first
13:10customer pescarolo the pescarolos the uh the 16 17 well of course we we lost the 17 earlier in the race
13:18they're the first so that's the uh the second generation of the uh the true pescarolos per se of
13:25course the pescarolo was originally adapted from a garage this here is the first customer pescarolo
13:32and Martin short's very excited to have his hands on it looks great to see an independent be able to be
13:37competitive but more than that Martin short and these guys it's great to see how much fun they
13:43actually have competing here
13:47can't remember or not if we've told you about Adrian Newey's performance here at the uh 75th running of
13:54the Michelin 24 hours of the mall yes the Adrian Newey legendary formula one designer he is racing here
14:03in a Ferrari and they're currently a little further down the order than where they would like to be it's
14:09the AF course red bull Ferrari this is Alan McNish is in it's the end of his first stint already after
14:16blistering lap times the Scotsman is in
14:23just watch how calm things are down here in the Audi Sport North America pit
14:27they all go about their work very systematically very composed doors yeah you saw one of the
14:34mechanics hand Allen a drink bottle he just now got done drinking what was in there and threw it out
14:40probably was not water some sort of an energy drink I'm sure
14:46we had an email about that earlier Lee about a blue box somebody saw someone handing a blue box that's
14:51a drink bottle that's being handed in and out of the car when the drivers make their exchange
14:55Alan just took it and threw it back to him okay so McNish has serviced he's done and he's out
15:01on his way someone who is fresh from driving is Portuguese driver João Marmosa
15:08he really disappoints me and I was such a sweaty driver and you don't even look like you've been
15:13driving I know I uh used to see you coming out of the malls are really sweating I guess you were
15:19working harder than I was open cockpit is always good you know actually sometimes it's cold inside
15:27the car but you know the car has been running really really good and we just had problems with a
15:33couple of rims and they kept getting a little loose so I had to come in do a few shorter unscheduled stops
15:41but apart that the car is running really good and uh we're we are where I think we
15:47we hope to be which is like uh really close to the first um petrol car so I think it's going really
15:54good so far well you speak great English now Gerald thanks to me um what I want to do is for the
16:01viewers at home put into perspective you're driving down the Mulsanne straight with with nothing but the
16:05stars up in above you despite what that feels like well it feels awesome I love to drive at night
16:11here at Le Mans but I think there's a big big issue here at night because when you go around at three
16:17o'clock in the morning you smell barbecue and you get really really hungry and I think they should stop
16:23that because otherwise they should invite us inviting the whole team to go and eat the barbecue but it gets
16:29really hungry out there well yeah well that's better than than when I was doing it because we used to have
16:34the fairground out there and I could smell weed so that was a whole different kind of craving anyway
16:39listen yeah you're going to get back in one question before you do that before you go the windscreen
16:43you had to change the windscreen the little lip in front of the stable for you is that just to deflate
16:49the air away from some head vibration yeah and the other one was a shorter one and you get a lot of
16:55bumpering in your head and after a while it gets tiring also because of the noise but you know if you put
17:04a taller one then everything is fine it's just driving around and hope for the best fabulous
17:09well we're following your progress and it's going to get five minutes sleep yeah sure I'm going to try
17:13that it's not easy bye
17:21justin earlier in the show we made a big deal about all the rain that we've had this week we had a couple
17:26showers at the beginning of the race but since then it's been dry and I think we've all been very
17:30surprised about that now I just went and took a look at the weather uh computers over at Corvette
17:36and most of the weather this week has been coming up from Africa and at the beginning of
17:40this program I checked it and there were some storm showers down in Spain and they're starting to
17:45work into southern France so they're coming up at a north northwest direction now the happy thing
17:51here good thing for you and I Justin down on pit lane is it looks like we're going to have a dry
17:55stint here as we're finishing up but it looks like Brian Till and Andrew Marriott might be getting wet
18:00so I would say probably in the next few hours it might be getting wet here again at Le Mans
18:05well Chris you know what an email come in from Paul Monson St. Petersburg Florida he asked
18:12any teams have a meteorologist on staff to predict the weather during the race you just kind of answered
18:17that you're our meteorologist and uh yes they do actually Paul there there's an airport right across
18:23from us and uh they're constantly checking those sort of things it could be wet come daylight and that
18:29was uh Chris Neville angling for a job as the weatherman local uh phoenix affiliate
18:37he's got the whole back off of Dante and it looks a bit frantic right now
18:56I don't know what that was that I just saw it okay they're gonna bring the car in the garage
19:00they're putting the casters under there
19:01all right it's the 55
19:09yeah it's definitely going back in the garage they you know when you drop a breadcrumb on the
19:13floor and all the ants leap over him well that was the little french version they they took the rear
19:17their rear lid off and uh with the aurica team is so efficient they they flow back in the garage it's
19:23rather weird they've got a guy under the car right now and uh at the front and uh he's checking underneath
19:30i think that's just standard procedure actually but they're working on the left rear suspension
19:35as well as right at the front of the engine i can't get any closer but cute to show now it looked just
19:40like he was uh under a stressful moment so uh it's been all over his face i know that wasn't uh
19:46according to plan stefan or telly in the car and you know he's just a spectacular driver and he's staying
19:52in um meanwhile they you know let's go back to it dorsey remember we talked about they're cleaning
19:57the whole car what with such practiced efficiency while everything else you know the rest of the
20:02guys are dealing with the real issue at the back so we're going to have to get a an update on this
20:07when when they finally let us further back it's a good shot of how much oil is all over the front of
20:13that car because you get behind these cars leaking oil gearboxes leaking so forth and you can see it
20:18streaked all the way up the front of the hood there they're cleaning the headlights while the
20:22windshield gets covered with that stuff too and you don't dare turn on a windshield wiper when it's
20:27full of oil like that or you have a big mess stefan or telly has endured the highs and lows at le mans he
20:35won he stood right there in 1998 with alan mcnish but he's also seen plenty escape his grasp keep sending the
20:42emails in we are back inside the box the pit box of orica that's hug de shonac the team principal the
21:01man behind orica and the work continues justin updated us during the break and they have a uh a starter
21:09issue with that celine this is the lowe's zytek adrian fernandez and gang and finally it is released from
21:18its pit box that was a very prolonged period in pit lane and finally they can get back out there as a
21:26result of them staying in the lane in their garage for so long the 25 ray malik limited prototype has been
21:34able to move up into the top four and has moved ahead of adrian fernandez who takes to the track right
21:40now and that is tommy erdos behind the wheel in that rml car the two-time defending winners of the p2
21:48category here at the michelin 24 hours of le mans and this is what p2 is like every year it's just the
21:55best who can stay out there the longest not necessarily about speed it's all about reliability and at the
22:01moment in p2 it is the uh well he has a little bit of scottish a little bit of american bill binney
22:07is now driving the 31 14th overall best in class and best in class no doubt about it thomas anger
22:17is flying injured elbow and all the check is unbelievable he has broken the three minute 50
22:24barrier a 349.9 about two laps ago he is flying so david brabham set the benchmark at a 350.3
22:34anger smashed it to the tune of another four tenths of a second
22:38uh it's getting that time of day isn't it look at all the teams now catching the snooze where they can
22:57if you're not working you know you almost have to the best thing i learned about 24-hour races is if you
23:02don't have to be on your feet don't be on your feet because when you have to be on your feet they
23:07have to be under you don't they well i can tell you the sky looking out from our announce position
23:13the sky is and although that shot there doesn't depict it all that well the sky is starting to
23:18lift it is starting to get a little light and this is what gives the cruise there you go that shows it
23:23nicely this is what gives the cruise an extra little kick they find their second wind and the daylight just
23:29lifts everybody this is a very important time at le mans for those who have been here for those who
23:35have raced here whatever you do anybody whatever whatever discipline when everyone sees the daylight
23:41they get a little bit extra in their kick and away they go although there are still many hours left
23:47in the race once daylight comes and this is the big difference between le mans and the rolex 24 at
23:53daytona at daytona doors as you know all too well you spend far uh greater hours under darkness
24:01absolutely you do and of course they've raised or they put the start of the race at about three o'clock
24:06now it helps out a lot it gets light at 5 a.m here in france and it stays light all the way to 10 30 at
24:12night so it's quite the long days we see the 006 aspen getting what seems to be routine service
24:21down in 32nd position at the moment rolling romaine perville behind the wheel
24:28and this is the car that gregor fisken is in as well no trouble there he stalled it but it requires
24:35finish the point on gregor fisken earlier he's uh something he's fourth or fifth visit to le mans
24:40we saw him race one year with uh kevin buckler's racers group he's raced in every single category
24:46and now he's doing gt1 so that makes it his fourth visit here deals in fine vintage automotive
24:53vehicles and we saw with the vintage race earlier today gregor had a lot of the cars that he has
24:58traded over the years in that event justin what do you have for us
25:01rick bryant is the owner uh the sponsor the the looks like the guy that takes the car up at the
25:11back when you've had a little bit of an off you've had an amazingly busy evening yeah it's been a
25:16difficult night for us um we uh had an off a couple of hours ago um antonio was antonio garcia was uh
25:25uh trying to avoid another car that got into a bit of difficulty and unfortunately that led him to
25:30spin damage the rear end of the car uh so we had a fair bit of work there to patch things together
25:37the rear frame is slightly askew uh so we've had to sort of uh uh take the rear off the car put it
25:46back together as uh as well as we could we uh borrowed a rear wing from uh the works team who very kindly
25:53lent is one um so that's why it's carrying the intercontinental hotels and hack it on it
25:59and uh we got the car back together again with a bit of brute force and uh duct tape
26:06well i have to say that seeing an aston martin in something other than that green in the beginning
26:11i thought it was beautiful and now it's just you know you get used to it obviously you've come out
26:15you're running a privateer aston provides some challenges i'm sure yeah it does i mean we've uh we've
26:21been running the car for quite a long time uh the car was actually the first customer car ever built
26:27and it's had a very successful uh life so far uh we were fourth here in gt1 last year we've had a
26:34number of wins around on the le mans series and fia circuits uh we were in sebring earlier in the year
26:41to start the season off uh so yeah it's uh interesting challenges and we've done things a little bit
26:47different to the works team well and the other thing i think is going to be of interest to everyone
26:51back at home in the states is that we could be seeing you out there again at the end of the year
26:55which is obviously you know what everyone watching this loves your car so you know they'd like to see
27:00you there yeah well we had great fun out in sebring uh and uh would potentially even consider moving
27:08moving the team out to the usa to do the american le mans series if we can write find the right
27:14sponsorship partners and we'd be delighted to do that there's an opportunity to race again at the end of
27:20the year uh the final le mans series race is the uh mil mihas at interlagos in brazil uh and we could
27:28come over and do petit le mans and possibly laguna seca on the way down there so uh yeah we'd like to
27:34come back to the usa well fabulous well you know everyone's keeping a close eye on you it's nice to see
27:40you know the the privateer take on the the factory you just keep going the way you're going and you'll
27:44have a great race and rick we'll see you out in the states i hope thank you very much thanks justin thank you
27:48well yesterday when we saw teams having to deal with that rain that was coming on and off we did
27:54some talking about intermediate tires and full wet tires and just to actually show you what we were
27:59talking about this right here is that intermediate tire that we were talking about uh grooves are a
28:04little bit further spread apart they're not they're a little bit shallower cut in the tire this has meant
28:08you know for when you've got damp conditions not a lot of rain on the road this tire still pumps quite a
28:12bit of water but you've definitely got more rubber on the road now when you move over to the full wet
28:17tire this is a much softer compound we see a lot deeper grooves in the tire more grooves in the
28:22tire this thing really pumps gallons of water by the second and now an interesting piece that we read
28:27from michelin earlier this week is because of the amount of rain that we've had in a short period of
28:32time michelin has actually made more cuts and they'll do it by hand to this full wet tire they will
28:38actually put more grooves in the tire to try and pump more water on the racetrack now as we talked about
28:43earlier we might get some more rain here sunday morning maybe sunday afternoon now nice thing for
28:49these teams is they've got three different combinations that they can look at chris it is
28:54sunday morning and michelin had to bring 8 000 tires to just this one event to cover it
29:03but their headquarters is not too far away at clermont ferrand a little further south from where
29:09we are here in le mans hey tracy crone's car with nick johnson behind the wheel is up into the top five
29:15in gt2
29:27friday night under the lights the beast heads to the milwaukee mile in the nascar craftsman truck series
29:34this will be great it's edge of your seat thrill ride stuff the nascar craftsman truck series live
29:41from milwaukee friday night at 8 30 eastern only on speed as always we're back this is the car i was
29:50telling you about as we went to the break it's the 99 crone racing with reese competizione ferrari 430
29:57nick johnson tracy crone colin brown they're in the top five in class what a moment it would be if they
30:05could get a podium and colin brown and his first appearance at le mans could stand on the gt2 class
30:11podium that would be magnificent you just saw a quick flash away to the 76 uh imsa performance matmut
30:18porsche raymond narek richard leitz and american pat long we've got american le mans series drivers spread
30:25all over the place here and a lot of them are in very prominent position stores yeah they've got a good
30:31team there it is the car the imsa performance car pat long of course driving in that team for that team
30:39looks like they're doing a brake pad change right front saw a brake pad just get it come out
30:44that will be scheduled
30:47and we heaped a uh a bunch of praise on alan mcnish earlier for setting that blistering time of a 3.27
30:54two well marco verner has almost matched his audi teammate with a 3.27 seven so superb performance
31:03from these audi guys and verner is sent again it's incredible speed that they're showing with the
31:09kind of lead they have i mean you heard mcnish talk about it earlier that they really really want to
31:13put it on them they're going to try to extend their lead as much as they can
31:17the racing guy is going to work here there's a brake pad tool you see that big uh it squeezes and
31:29those those brake pads are very thin you can see them right there laying on the ground as he's taking
31:34them out they were pretty worn out well we remember that thrilling finish at the mobile 1 12 hours of
31:44sebring and it all came down to a thrilling finish between the risi ferrari and the uh and the porsche
31:51of jorg bergmeister for flying lizard because of brake dramas with the risi car they worked very
31:57hard to get on top of that this is the 24 the liz halliday prototype this is the noel del bello
32:07courage aer it has spent an exaggerated period of time on pit road that took them from a very
32:14prominent position that is liz halliday behind the wheel right now she has experience she has
32:22pretty decent results here at le mans in prototype she's thrilled to be back and away she goes was
32:30scheduled to be in the team modner aston martin that kind of took a uh a turn for the worst and she
32:38found herself here in the del bello p2 prototype we wish her well on this stint
32:47and things getting lighter and brighter by the minute here at circuit de la salle
32:53and they have sadly the competitors out of the race and in the most dramatic of fashions the number
33:20three out of mike rockenfeller the team saying it was mike perhaps just pushing a little too hard
33:27in treacherous conditions that undid that campaign in spectacular fashion
33:34rear-ending into the guard rail and mike rockenfeller did his utmost to try and get that car running
33:40again but there was just too much damage done it ended with one of the team members heading over to
33:46tent rouge and just saying mike it's over this is done yeah there was no way in the world that car
33:52was going anywhere sebastian board eight over there having a conversation
34:00i think the peugeot camp would be reasonably pleased with the way things are going at the moment they're
34:05third and fifth respectively the seventh car of jack villeneuve is the higher place car the eight of
34:11stefan sarrazin which borde is part of that crew it's been a number of years since sebastian has been
34:17able to compete here at le mans his hometown his birthplace and i think peugeot will be delighted if
34:24they can simply get both cars home
34:29exactly 10 hours remaining
34:33at le mans it's the race to the chequered flag
34:36so one of the mechanics looking in the front now another one's looking the same thing over again
34:42looking at brake pad wear see if this is a good opportune time to put brake pads on or can they go one
34:47more stint
34:51that's not considered working on the car as you can't do much right now as it's
34:55being fueled but you can certainly look at things and that's what they were about
35:06for those of you just tuning in welcome to speeds live and continuing coverage of the 75th running
35:13of the michelin 24 hours of le mans it has been an eventful race like it is each and every year
35:19weather has been a big talking point we're glad you can be with us lee diffie dorsey schrader with you
35:24down on pit road it's chris neville and justin bell we're about to cycle through we change just like
35:29the drivers do greg creamer and calvin fish standing by we've also got brian till and
35:34andrew marriott on board as well we've thoroughly enjoyed what we've seen so far and we are not
35:41going anywhere we're with you right through to the chequered flag and beyond this is our 13 and a
35:47half hour chunk of live coverage we're bringing you 17 and a half in total and boy there's some weary
35:53tired people on pit lane some teams have experienced more hardships than others but that's what endurance
36:01sports car racing is all about if you've literally just tuned on alan mcnish for audi sport north america
36:07is the race leader and a convincing leader to the tune of two laps over fellow audi sport north america
36:13driver marco verner and jack villeneuve is currently third the best pescarolo is romain dumas there's only one
36:22works pescarolo remaining in this race and then stefan saruzen in the second perjot the number eight
36:29machine is fifth overall thomas enger leads gt1 for the works aston martin team bill binney one of the
36:37american entries leads p2 and another american le mans series car rissi competizione the houston-based
36:44team leads gt2 this is the seven it is in villeneuve is out great stint considering this is his
36:52debut performance at le mans and to drive a nighttime double stint triple stint maybe even off the top
36:58of my head great performance jv and once again because of the coupe nature of that car a lot
37:04harder to get the driver change done you see the mechanics feet sticking out of the side of the car
37:09the driver cannot put the belts on himself there's no way to move around inside that car so the
37:13mechanics got to go through the side he's going to have to buckle all the belts hook up the hoses
37:18cooling hoses drip tubes all the electrical for the helmet it's not as easy as it would sound to be
37:26but i've done it before myself that day it's a difficult situation justin
37:33yeah it's a little hot back here and there's a reason for that and it's not just obviously the
37:38atmosphere of le mans when we're out the front of the pits you've probably seen us getting pushed out
37:43of the way by every team member running at 100 miles an hour coming through with the tires well
37:48that's because they're hot if you get in here there's a big heater of course all the tires have
37:52just been put on this modena car but the temperature is about 180 degrees fahrenheit centigrade in there
37:58fahrenheit and uh i almost feel i should put my speed speedos on um there's a real important point
38:04why they do this remember that especially in the wet imagine how fabulous that would be guys you know and
38:09dorsey can especially relate to this you're out there you're going out in a very tricky track
38:14conditions and your tires are already at almost operating temperature with slick tires it becomes
38:19even you know kind of more important for the peugeots and the audis when they're in this head-to-head battle
38:23so even the private teams are out the back here with these ovens so you know what guys i mean we're
38:29not allowed to run them in grand and we're allowed to run them in a lot of race series but here they
38:33obviously are so uh that's why they run through hot tires christian for the paldy just walking past
38:39us he's uh casually dressed and uh would like to try and grab him later on ironically tire warmers are
38:47illegal you can't have tire warmers but tire ovens are not go figure so justin was it uh celsius or fahrenheit
38:56it would be fahrenheit otherwise it'd be milk well he couldn't hear us because he was busy grabbing
39:06christian fitipaldi let's hear from the brazilian now yeah i'm glad you casually dress christian
39:13yeah it's been a very long night for us uh unfortunately we had a damper break at uh
39:23five six hours into the race and that cost us about uh 12 minutes and that really got us out of
39:30the running we were running at that point p3 p4 all the time um then after that we had
39:36uh a small incident where a car spun in front of uh like antonio and then he couldn't avoid it and
39:43then we had to change like the rear end but uh pretty much being a gt1 class where these cars don't
39:51break our race was over when we when we broke from that i'm glad to hear you sounding quite so
39:57enthusiastic but we're at mid ohio next weekend so it'll get better no for sure i'm flying back on
40:03monday going to mid ohio next week it's another race let's see what we can do over there i'm very
40:08happy my car in america is running very good but uh over here i'm a little bit disappointed because
40:14we definitely had a shot at it and uh it's just gonna be a long 10 hours until the end of the race
40:20but we'll see what we can get out of it well you got lots of fans watching you so think about that
40:24thank you christian well for the folks at home that don't know what a front damper is that is another
40:28name for a chocolate blower and that's what broke jos menten is behind the wheel of christian's 59
40:37team moderner aston martin their 30th overall and something a quick guess about 10th in class hey
40:44when we come back it's greg cream at calvin fish taking over we'll see you in a few hours
40:58speed's coverage of the michelin 24 hours of lamont is brought to you by lexus and their pursuit of
41:06perfection and by valvaline 100 years under the hood
41:17welcome back to speed's live coverage of the 75th running of the michelin 24 hours of
41:21lamont greg creamer now up in the booth along with uh calvin fish and great to be back with you and as
41:27you can see there a hint of uh something other than dark starting to uh make its way into the sky
41:34and we're very happy to see that and it's not hidden by any clouds which continues to amaze and
41:40impress big surprise i mean as we said earlier in the show since we got here it's been raining all week
41:45everyone up and down pitlane expected the same thing throughout the 24-hour race so it's a nice and
41:50pleasant surprise particularly to not get too much rain if any through the nighttime hours is a big relief
41:55because the driver said in qualifying the other night it was an absolute nightmare well the last
42:01four hours that uh lee and darcy have been uh steering the ship what you been doing uh listening to them
42:06for a couple hours i didn't get a nap for about an hour there and a couple of cups of tea with plenty
42:10of sugar to get back on the air so i'm ready to go that's that buzz that i hear in the background i
42:15thought it was electronics but it just scaled is wired and ready to go as we all are and it's uh obviously
42:21taking you right to the finish here and it's going to be absolutely exciting another guy who
42:26is uh pumped is brian till because there's action in front of him and because i had a
42:32guys right now jamie mellow and the number 97 rissi competizione ferrari has come in this is your gt2
42:38leader by two laps over the second place car right now they're going to do routine maintenance and then
42:43they're going to jack this car up take the tires off but before they put front tires on they will do a
42:49brake pad change now this is something that in endurance racing is very common if calvin can
42:55talk a little bit more about why it will be front brake pads only once they finish this stop
42:59but what you'll see is the front tires will come off mechanic will reach in now these calipers very
43:05very hot they'll reach in with a pair of almost looks like pliers to hold back the pads that are
43:12there the the brake pads they'll move them back out of the way knock the old brake pads out of the way
43:19they'll put new ones in now these brake pads very very hot well over a thousand degrees as they come in
43:27push the pistons back out of the way so they can get the new pads in they need this tool to push the
43:31pistons back so that they can get the new brake pads in because the new pads will be much thicker than the
43:37ones that just came out because the ones that just came out obviously are very worn you can tell that
43:42the mechanic has gotten the pads the new pads in pistons were put back he'll put the clips back on
43:48those retaining clips very very important they keep the brake pads held into place you can tell this is
43:54not very long trust me if you take your ferrari to the dealership it'll take longer than this to do
43:58a brake job right now the guys at reesee have the ferrari service tires fuel and a brake pad change
44:04the key there is the coordination between mechanics on both sides uh you've seen mistakes in the past
44:11where the pads come out and then suddenly if the driver puts his foot on the brake pedal he can pop
44:17the pistons out of those calipers so they have to do it together so when they push the pistons back if
44:22you push them back on one side without the other side being held either by the pads or that piece of
44:26equipment you're just going to simply transfer the fluid across the car to the other side and push the
44:31pistons out so the mechanics have to work together brian mentioned it's front pads what you get in
44:35the race car you get a lot of weight transport towards the front the wheels that are loaded are
44:39going to take the heaviest braking forces hence the fronts we're out before the rears and typically
44:43here at le mans predominantly right hand turns it'll be the left front in fact would be the thinner pad
44:49if you to check those pads right now i'm sure the left front would be thinner than the right now on
44:53these first few lap corners or maybe even first couple of laps after a change like that have to be pretty
44:58cognizant to be careful and bedding them in or is it pretty much set do they use a pre-bedded pad
45:03they use a pre-bedded pad i mean the technology's just come so far now it really doesn't take much
45:07but you've got to really maybe adjust the brake bars you're going to have a different uh bite in the
45:11front to the rear so it'll be a bit of a change for the driver to get used to that that is something
45:15that they can change within the cockpit there's a dial inside the cockpit will actually shift the amount
45:20of brake pressure in comparison between the front and the rear so we'll have to spend a couple of laps
45:25here just dialing that in and then the most important thing is if a new driver gets in the
45:29car that that is set not takes it by surprise in fact some race cars that have actually driven in
45:33the past sports cars they actually have an indicator on the dash because some a certain driver may like
45:38more brake buyers one way or the other so when you jump in you can see exactly what that brake setting
45:43is we watched the number 100 aston martin come in we saw a couple of shots of the 63 vet making a change but
45:50other than this moment earlier in the race this number 97 risi car has been absolutely flawless but
45:56this was of concern that is not the new risi ac system that they've got in place there it's a quick
46:02fix the door just has a couple of pins there is an electrical connector which i'm not sure what that
46:06actually does unless these side view mirrors are electronically operated by the driver there's some
46:11connection that had to be made there within the door jam but it's a pretty quick fix and he's not in the
46:16way that was much earlier in the event today and this is the 100 aston martin fabio babini behind the
46:24wheel of that right now and uh there's some interesting number sequences that are going on with the cars
46:30you got the 007 009 obviously and uh that's the 00 of bond uh but the 100 has some interesting uh it does
46:39meaning too we'll get to that in a second we're gonna watch right now as alan mcnessh brings the overall
46:43leading audi r10 tdi and looks like it's uh gonna be tires fuel and mcnessh again right
46:54you called it greg mcnessh stays in the car under these weather conditions it's so so easy to do
47:00it's so cool down here about 55 degrees we're all wearing jackets down here even the crew members when
47:06they're sitting around the garage wearing jackets they will take tires and they will be sticker tires
47:11wouldn't be surprised to see him run scuffs right now they will have scuffed in some tires during
47:15practice just to make sure to get some of this uh what they call mold release off it makes the tire
47:21a little more grippy when it's cold but right now mcnessh is going to be back underway out on sticker
47:26tires he's going to have to be careful they alluded to it earlier these cold temperatures it's going to
47:30take the race tires a while to get up to temperature and before so they'll be quite slick one thing we're
47:35seeing here this year the drivers are doing quadruple stints but the tires are doing doubles now in the past
47:41we've seen the michelins actually do up to a quadruple stem which is quite remarkable but this r10 chassis
47:47is a lot harder on the tires than the r8 that won here a couple of years ago and several years before
47:53that in fact and the 009 is in second in the gt1 class and this too uh i don't think that was a driver
48:03change was it they were just doing something in the cockpit it may have been a drink bottle or something
48:07to assist david brabman who currently sits in the car running second in class to the sister car
48:12driven by thomas enga right now so a great battle within the aston martin ranks david brabman looking
48:18for his first win comes so close second overall in uh 2003 with the bentley he'd love to get a class
48:26victory here this weekend and take a look at the manufacturer standings in the classes p1 audi audi
48:32pujo pescarola pujo here is p2 lola in front of courage and zytek take a look at gt1 it's aston martins
48:40and corvettes occupying the top five and in gt2 it's now a ferrari one two with the porsche slipping to
48:47third tomorrow on speed step into the wind tunnel with dave to spain don't miss the biggest names
48:59the biggest opinions and the biggest mouths all season long and of course dave is on in to fan
49:03the flames of controversy that's wind tunnel with dave to spain tomorrow at 9 eastern live on speed
49:10welcome back everybody 225 laps complete working 226 for our lead audi getting a good look at uh the
49:22solnier racing entry and the driver on board that is uh making a bit of a stop
49:30that is the number 35 at this stage and uh again that's uh bruce joanne jacques decollet and
49:38all the three drivers on board that car nice quick stop they are back in underway and uh we i teed this
49:45up but you never got to get out the driver and take a whack at it uh the hundred on the uh italian
49:50aston mark has some significance 100th birthday for corelli and as you mentioned greg a lot of numbers
49:55here this year 75th running of le mans uh 25 years for courage and uh floller had been one more year
50:02they could have joined too they're at 49 50 next year so lots going on here this year absolutely uh this
50:07event has been around so long that uh history pretty much every year you run it nowadays uh another
50:13mark is set another special moment occurs and the like at this stage and uh we want to get it back
50:19down to pit lane to brian till brian what you got for us hey greg you know we were talking about that
50:24brake pad change and some of the tools that the mechanics use well i'll show you some of the tools
50:28that uh we're using down in pit lane which are actually kind of cool i've got this thing in my hand
50:32it's called kangaroo tv now they use it in nascar and they use it in formula one it started in champ car but
50:37i've got a picture of this is the world feed right now and that's all well and good so i can see
50:41pictures but what really works for us is to go to this stats page and it gives me timing and scoring
50:47in red there i've got the p1 class i can scroll back through there's my gt2 class there's my gt1
50:55class timing scoring i got best lap last lap how many laps ahead and i can scroll through figure out
51:00exactly where everybody's running so yeah the tools are important for the mechanics but i like this one too
51:05of course the only problem is straps not long enough my arms are too short i can't read all
51:09these little uh these little words on here well you got the readers tucked inside that's the problem i
51:16understand that is a very very cool little tool we've been enjoying it as well been able to take
51:22it back when we're off air back to the compound and uh keep track of things quick shot of adrian
51:26newey right there looks like he might be getting on board here so uh ah yeah this is uh our world feed
51:34some great stuff once again from the folks at interface and uh just doing a little bit of
51:38sights and sounds of what's occurred throughout the course of the evening and night here at
51:44the circuit de la sarthe again our thanks to interface for uh providing the host coverage right
51:49now on that kangaroo tv as i said we've been able to use it and i believe you can if you go to next tell
51:55there's a link for next tell uh on their website that you can get some information about that and
52:00you're going to be attending some races uh as uh brian said uh next tell cup or certainly uh f1
52:07races running at indianapolis this weekend and like uh that's all happening right there
52:13and uh j.j yaley on the pole so good run there that's a shocker which is great for him
52:18but i thought brian was just smiling realize he had no less cheetah materials down there in pit lane
52:25yeah but one thing i did notice we were just about i was i was about to talk about it and we had a
52:31little change but it showed up great on that stats page is that the number 63 did make the stop and uh
52:38o'connell is now took over from magnuson we've got uh a wheel that's over there down in the gravel trap
52:45meanwhile here comes the number eight peugeot andrew yes i am here and uh the peugeot is going to have
52:55you see you've got me saying it now peugeot rather than peugeot sebastian bordet has climbed aboard
53:01and uh they're going to change the tire so this is one of these slightly longer stops
53:05everything else seems in good order and the fuel is going in this is a diesel the shell diesel which goes
53:12is actually synthetic diesel it's not made from oil actually made from natural gas and uh just at
53:19the left rear the tire changer showing his tiredness i think had a bit of a problem getting the rear
53:25wheel off which has now gone running down the pit lane and into me and uh
53:31i have to say this little pit stop here looks a little bit ragged
53:34but the guy's down here and we'll be leaving in a moment there it fires up you can hardly hear it just so
53:43quiet and it's away well stefan sarazan certainly laid down some great labs there the first time we've
53:51seen the peugeots under the 330 mark in this event certainly in pre-test and qualifying they're a
53:56lot faster than that but 329.6 with stefan sarazan's fastest lap we now got sebastian bordet and one
54:03thing that the drivers say they don't get into but will certainly happen is when you see one of your
54:08teammates lay down a fast lab you certainly want to go out there and be in the same ballpark so
54:12sebastian bordet light is coming up he'll have some soft tires on there still because we're in the cooler
54:18conditions he'll probably go out there and try and lay down some fast labs here and try and narrow
54:23that gap that they currently have between them and the number 16 pescarolo which is currently driven
54:29by roman dumas and i mean really throughout the night they've continued to tweak on that car
54:34aerodynamically they've made rear deck changes they've made louver changes they've done an awful
54:38lot of stuff to try and find the grip that that car had and that's really been the issue hasn't it
54:42it has i mean sebastian seemed quite frustrated when he got out of the car in the middle of the night and
54:47uh he kind of wears his heart on his sleeve you know when sebastian's happy and when he's not he
54:51looked pretty frustrated and upset that the car was not performing as he had hoped i remember reading
54:56one of the quotes from the pre-test he just said after the lap he laid down there which was a low one
55:00uh 326 he said the car's balance just was perfect it made a change he went out and did like a six or
55:06eight lap run with several laps sub 330 with the fastest being a 326 so he felt they'd be able to improve
55:14on that come here to the 24-hour race being even better shape and it seems like with all the rain
55:18we had on wednesday and thursday the team lost the handle on the race car a little bit and they're
55:22trying to get it back under these dry conditions which we would not expect for the race today which
55:27is the difference between uh the lack of data the book if you will that the peugeot team has versus
55:34the audi uh book because they've got the experience we're able to adjust now obviously a lot of americans are
55:40running here at le mans this year and if you're wondering just how they're doing at this stage
55:43well liz halliday six-time alms winner is currently running sixth in class they were leading for a
55:49while uh the noel del bello team uh things have shuffled a bit bill binney the scottish-born american
55:55number 31 is the class leader in p2 right now in gd3 johnny o'connell sits third in class behind the two
56:01aston martins philip collin is unfortunately out patrick long however third in class at gt2
56:07uh van overbeck neeman uh they are out of it uh problems as we saw earlier tom millner running in
56:13the painos is out and the number 99 reesey crone ferrari of tracy crone brown and uh jansen is uh
56:22fifth in class so uh still quite a few of the americans doing well and well placed absolutely if
56:27you're running up in the top five six at this stage of the game with over nine and a half hours left i mean
56:32many of those drivers and combinations could be in with a shout of the podium if not a victory before
56:37this thing is over perseverance pays at lamont something that actually this team the number 25
56:43rml entry knows full well and they have continued to keep that car running in hopes of a third straight
56:48win we will be right back and see if that happens
