00:00and uh all right through the field this is gonna go all the way down to the wire must do but every
00:05class has been exciting tonight hasn't it oh it's been incredible and of course much of that is down
00:09to lola cars eight cars they've got running here this year and of course supremely those two lola
00:15aston martins right up the front of the field zero seven zero eight cars six and seventh at the moment
00:20and uh martin brain who is uh who owns lola cars down at huntingdon martin great to have you with
00:26us tonight and uh congratulations such a good showing i think it equals your best best ever
00:32numbers of cars here doesn't it yes thank you very much it is the best that i've ever had in the last
00:3712 years it's uh equals 79 with uh the previous with the previous management and i'm delighted i'm
00:45delighted to see how competitive we are uh the lola astons are doing really well uh we've got a good
00:51team there with uh with uh the with howard chapel and uh and uh his his people uh we have great teams
01:01in the p2 as well speedy and rml who have just got hit up the rear i believe by a ferrari a little while
01:08ago which is why they dropped dropped down yeah we had rob dyson watching with us just as that happened
01:14with chris on board of course but i mean this is this has been one of the stories of this year hasn't it
01:18the lola coupe you have just set such new high standards well i was pushing for that for quite
01:23a while through the lms where i am a shareholder and a director and we talked about this for a long
01:31time the open cars look so similar and not really representing road cars and of course i'm a i'm a
01:38sports car fiend and i was uh pushing to to get to close cars so we could move that around now i was
01:47speaking with julian earlier and uh just about the new the coupe and last year i know a few of the
01:53drivers were saying that it was a great car but it was maybe a little bit loose behind few little
01:56issues this year they're saying it's absolutely nailed to the ground fantastic car really user
02:01friendly and just absolutely planted and i'm wondering what what you can tell me that's that's
02:05happened to make that such a such a fantastic car now well i can tell you that um the car was
02:11designed to uh have a have a v8 engine in it and the last minute that got switched to a v12 and of
02:22course there were had to be compromises at the rear to allow that to fit in a short gearbox and a lot
02:29quite a quite a bit of change so uh it has taken a little while for all of that to bed in
02:35uh i wish we had i wish we had a nice v8 but no the the v12's doing really well can you hear me
02:48yeah absolutely no it certainly seems like you've got it dialed in now and and really everybody i've
02:52spoken to has just done nothing but rave about the car and what a quality car it is i'm desperate to
02:57drive it myself to be honest being such a lola fan that i am so um i think it's definitely it's proving
03:03where it's where it should be it's right up there in the petrol class right at the front well you
03:06had the right man sitting here then the moment ago you had rob dyson it's going it's going there's a
03:12man who can uh who can do it for you come on rob he got out quickly as soon as we saw martin maybe
03:19owes him some money no he doesn't no he's uh we love the dyson team and and and they're great competitors
03:27and chris is a very good driver yeah and he he's been prank he's been he's been praising your fleet
03:34staff at huntington saying what a good job do they've been doing we've been saying hello to them
03:37tonight so have you got a message for them uh to the staff yeah you've done a fantastic job don't worry
03:43kids we'll have other news we'll have other news uh later in the week right well we're going to ask
03:48you about the minute but first we're just going down to nigel mansell another blast from the past
03:54how does it feel to have his son racing in this famous race uh very historic uh it's the first
04:01time i've come to the uh 24 hours and i can assure you it won't be the last it's uh fascinating
04:08it's uh just incredible it's an awesome race and for fans around the world it's got everything for
04:14everybody and the incredible thing is the changing conditions and how long the race is now the setting
04:20sun uh the next driver since going to be very very difficult and to see the differences in lap times
04:27and the strategy uh it's very interesting how is leo doing very very good we've done two double stints
04:34already and now the first driver pierre's going back in the car now and then leo will be doing uh the
04:40midnight shift so uh in the complete darkness so that'll be very good can we imagine one day a car with
04:47uh all mansell family you're you and your two son it definitely has a possibility now because uh
04:55i've really enjoyed watching but i'm still uh prefer to participate so who knows what might happen next
05:00year maybe we will have a battle process again i know it's incredible and center next door as well
05:09is incredible but uh for me it's just how professional the race is and uh from when i used to watch it on
05:16television to being here now all the manufacturers everything's stepped up i mean the uh lmp1 cars are
05:22like past formula one cars they're incredible machines so yeah it's going to be very exciting it's going
05:27to be a long night but a very exciting one and uh anyone who finished the race i think has achieved
05:32something very great thank you very much so there's another formula one driver who's seen the light and
05:38now realizes that le mans is where it's really at martin you're going to do it the other way around you
05:43put an entry in for the formula one world championship lola cars uh still trying to wait get it sorted out
05:50yes we are can i say something about nigel he he went uh in a lola uh at um esteril i think it was
05:58and he absolutely flew he went about two seconds faster than anyone had ever gone and either that
06:03car or one like it in the space of um i don't know 30 40 laps wow but um yeah and i think he would like
06:10to get in with his sons i once spoke to him earlier uh formula one um yeah the uh the attraction of the
06:20cost cap and the fact that they've waived the 40 million that we used to uh that they used to talk
06:27about us putting in meant that we assessed and we could probably assess the uh the opportunity shall
06:34we say um we can get within that cost cap we can do a good car for that in fact damn it all we've
06:42done a car and it's we've been working on it for the last seven weeks and it's really come together
06:47we've got the uh wind tunnel model in the tunnel all this week it was that it was finished last
06:53friday friday week actually um we uh were a little uh disappointed that our name wasn't on that
07:01list when it came out but we've had letters saying well hang around boys uh it's not over yet uh and so
07:06on uh i'm not going to make any comment other than that we are we are considering the thing we're
07:14reviewing the situation as you say i won't say it to music but uh we are reviewing the situation and on
07:21uh tuesday we will have a proper uh talk with my board even though i'm doing this personally
07:30your diplomacy is very very credible but you know we're all surprised obviously that you and pro drive
07:35and uh and the super fund of alex works weren't actually on that list at the moment but as you say
07:40that maybe that's to come but just just about lowering formula one i mean you in the early days lola
07:45was the top lane in formula one then eric broadly had this rather ill-fated for into it but that was
07:51probably not not the right time was it wrong time yeah lola actually has a pretty good record in
07:56making customer cars uh the very first time they actually uh outperformed ferrari and and porsche
08:03finishing fourth in the championship and getting poor position and winning uh podiums um then the next
08:12time around they uh as you know there was a honda engine put in the back of a of an indy car and it
08:19uh it went off and after less than four weeks of work on it went off and one at monza so um and then
08:29there have been several other there were seven altogether um the one with eric uh the last time
08:38well he had no facilities in fact the moment i came in i started putting all of these facilities in
08:43in and uh we have everything we've had everything for more than 10 years that you would need to
08:50do a formula one program yeah and uh i mean i've i've been down to low you've shown me around down
08:56there and i mean it's a fantastic operation you've got but like you i'm a sports car lover and i think
09:00why why someone who loves sports cars so much want to go single seater uh get going to formula one the
09:06single seater racing again i know you're still building singles oh yeah but yes but uh we're still we're
09:10still building uh sports cars and we'll continue to do so because we have spent a lot of time and
09:16money actually developing our ipr and and this coupe was 15 months of r d before we ever got it on
09:24the floor so that's a lot of time and a lot of money but it's become the car to have that's the
09:31great thing they come in the right direction well we seek we seek perfection if it's not easy to get
09:37that but we engineering excellence is what we what we try to do eric in one way and me in a different
09:43way well martin thank you very much for taking the time to come up and see us and uh all the best with
09:48the formula one program and let's hope things find their level pleasure to see you both thanks a lot
09:55thank you martin so we just uh saw some excitement there while martin was talking did you see the
10:01this perjot come into the pits dive between two gt two cars nearly wiped out uh russi off in the uh
10:08ferrari he's sharing with leo mansell oh dear it's getting a bit tricky it's all getting a bit exciting
10:13isn't it i mean i think a lot of it's down to the time of day we've got as well visibility is getting
10:16worse it's getting a lot harder to see on a lot of the straights it's getting difficult all right we're
10:22about to be joined here by jorge bergmeister another lizard yeah yeah another lizard yeah
10:26liz you know you and team are old friends why don't you have a chat about things uh yeah i mean this
10:32you've just been awesome in the portion i mean very impressive in qualifying um obviously a great start
10:38to the race um just tell us how it's been going really fill us in i mean so far i can't complain too
10:43much um the car is handling really well um compared to to qualifying and and the war in the warm-up
10:49hallway we're a little bit down on top speed um but it's not awfully bad we're missing like
10:54three four k's so it's not too bad um but and we can do double stints on the tires so i'm i'm really
11:02pleased with the car good are you gonna are you gonna continue double stints through the night on the
11:06tires are you gonna try and triple like a lot of teams are are going up one more stint really through
11:10the night i think we're going to stay with double stints um the pit stops of the of the lizards are so fast
11:15so we won't lose too much um the quickest um stop to have done so far in practice was 18 seconds on the
11:21tire change so that's that's uh really really impressive that's really fast i think we're going
11:26to stay on the double stints yeah it's probably safer anyway isn't it just saves you that little
11:30extra window of mistake with the tires you never know do you yeah definitely and you can push a little
11:35harder which is also more fun yeah exactly it's what that's that's basically the way you always drive i
11:40think isn't it always always push a bit harder when you can and it certainly pays off i hope it does
11:47so um when are you next going to be in the car and you'll be going into a double stint obviously
11:51into the night yeah darren just got in um before that was set um and then darren is doing a double
11:57then it's me a double darren a double and so we go through the night okay and tell us about the
12:02american lemon series it's been a little bit different this year hasn't it how's that been going out
12:06there and and how how does it compare to be back here again um alms um i think we're having a great
12:12run there so it's it's um it's really good working out really well for us we won the last three races
12:21and it's great being together with patrick long again uh it's a great teammate and we are both friends
12:27so it's it's it's always great if you have a if your teammate is your friend as well i think that that
12:32works out pretty well of course and it's been such a successful partnership for so for many years for
12:37you two hasn't it so it must be fantastic to be back again yeah about tonight though um timo you've
12:42had uh obviously sessions was fairly slow then we think he got a puncture did he um i'm not sure i
12:47i just walked over here when uh when he was running really slow um his pace before was was pretty good
12:53so i assume it was a puncture yeah and darren's on board the car now so uh darren's obviously a man you've
12:58raced against in uh in grandam haven't you only yeah i did um we had some good fights as well yeah
13:04and obviously we're teammates at flying visits yeah um no he's it's his first time here at le mans but
13:10he's doing really really well yeah i mean he obviously wants to win this so he can say i won
13:14the rolex and won le mans in the same same year yeah i wouldn't mind it as well yeah i'm sure you wouldn't
13:20be opposed to that would you so it's all going well then and uh we just so enjoyed the battle we had in
13:27the first two hours of the race just the chain of cars the ferrari the porches and swapping around
13:32all the time must be great being in that situation yeah at the start um some of the guys were a little
13:38crazy they were driving like there was no tomorrow um melo and and mark leave were touching on the
13:43straight so i was i was pretty impressed and i took a little bit more conservative there um and worked out
13:51pretty good i was saying when we were watching the start i was saying with jamie melo certainly he's
13:55only got sort of one speed and that is absolutely flat out would you agree with that i mean yeah
13:59absolutely the start of the le mans 24 hours and you said they're touching each other as if it
14:03was you know a 20 minute qualifying sessions i think that's the way jamie is yeah well none of
14:09us have forgotten the end of the sebring 12 hours obviously this wasn't going to mention that
14:15thank you but you're world famous because of that you're got yeah i still would have had the
14:21result the other way around you ditch the fame and take the result yeah so we're going to uh down
14:30back down to the pits no we're actually going to commercial break right yes i was getting ready for
14:36an interview and we've got interview here in the yes and we're on board now with the corvette c6r
14:42antonio garcia at the wheel but we're going to be back with you very soon if you can hang on a
14:47moment we'll get a little bit more in a moment stay with us
15:03you're back on eurosport live and uh just looking after but now where are we we are five hours 41
15:10minutes into the race and at the moment our race leader still perjo perjo perjo from audi and this
15:17one's going to go right through tonight sebastian baudet the man from le mans still out front from
15:22alex vers the man from austria dindo capello for audi lucas lure for audi anthony davidson through lola
15:28aston martin and benoit trellier for pescarilla perjo and there into the pits at the moment is the
15:34the aston martin of uh cheroos jan jan cheroos just coming in now it looked like there was possibly some
15:40smoke coming out of that car but i think what it was was a lock-up on the way into uh hitting his his pit
15:44limiter so just wondered if he's got a punch at the back yeah because his front wheel was off the
15:50ground there oh maybe that's what that's what this mic was yeah that was what it was yeah so so we've
15:55got uh your bergmeister versus york who's uh been in the middle of this frantic battle in uh gt2 today
16:01we're just looking where your car is at the moment you're um where are we uh seventh is it yeah the
16:07in 40th place overall um your best lap today i guess it was you four four zero six yes great place
16:14great right yeah it's not too bad as i said the car is working really well we can double stint the
16:21tires and i'm pace wise i think we are right there i think people might wonder if perjo and audi the
16:30diesel cars can get four stints out of their cars why do you only do two sticks um because our car is a
16:36little heavier um and we don't have all that um downforce that those cars make um so we're working
16:42the tires obviously a bit harder because you're sliding a little more and yeah i see this is what
16:48people always ask us about what's happening what are the any problems about going into dark
16:54for me personally no i like driving in the dark so i'm looking forward to it people ask us on the
16:59website are you fast are you faster in the dark as a driver or um it depends a little bit on the track but
17:05normally um i do about the same lap times in the daytime and the dark um there's an advantage
17:10in the dark obviously the air temperature is a little cooler and you get a little bit more horsepower
17:14so it takes away the disadvantages of not seeing that well now you have to have air conditioning in
17:21these closed cars 32 degrees i think it has to be that's still pretty hot isn't it inside yeah you're
17:26definitely still sweating that's for sure it's still hot isn't it i mean in the 30s it's still warm when
17:31you're working as hard as you have to work in abortion i mean you still have the helmet on and
17:35this you with the fireproofed underwear everything so it's yeah it's still really warm yeah well joel
17:42thank you very much for coming up and seeing us for the hope best of luck for the rest of the race
17:46thank you so much i'm sure it's going to work out well we're we're rooting for you and darren and
17:50so okay thank you bye bye thanks so the order at the moment we just uh said sebastian borde leading
17:58the great race overall uh but problems for a lot of other people and amongst those problems has been
18:03the the all-time disaster for federal army and the rest of the crew so there we go five hours 44 minutes
18:1393 laps completed by sebastian borde well we've recently just seen a pit stop putting patrick
18:20dempsey back into the car the advanced engineering car he's going out for a double stint his first
18:26double stint ever around the le mans 24 hours we saw him speaking earlier saying what a fantastic time
18:31he's had he said he was so glad to have gotten that first stint out of the way and i think a lot of
18:34these rookie drivers will be feeling the same way so much pressure and a lot of stress just the whole
18:40feeling you get starting at le mans you think my god it's my first stint at le mans and it's
18:44so overwhelming that you are quite happy to get that out of the way and then you can settle down
18:48and just enjoy the racing and this is a really brilliant time for him to get in the car it's an
18:53amazing time to be out on the track in tonight but it's also a very challenging time for a new driver
18:58you know you've got the light changing it's very very difficult because you can't really have any sort
19:02of shading with you because you're going in tonight the glare is an issue especially into the porsche
19:07curves and places like that you know the bug count gets a lot higher it's difficult to keep the wind
19:11screen clean people don't think about that so that's going to be a challenge so this car continues
19:15to be a favorite the crap with the crowds doesn't it the spiker c8 la violette tom coronel yarrick
19:20yanis and your own blake of old on board that car and of course that car people forget is the sixth
19:24audi audi v8 engine in it you're right it is people do forget including myself i'd forgotten that always
19:29always hugely popular here's a replay of uh always a big problem there we'll towards the tar coming off the
19:35the rim completely isn't it on the uh which is that the sheroos lola i'm not sure yes i think i think
19:42it was actually yes i believe it was so that's uh not good news for them having a lot of punctures
19:47which as you said earlier perhaps that's uh you know coming back on us from all that carbon that
19:51was spread across the circuit a while back could definitely be repercussions from that yeah well
19:55we're now joined by another of the manufacturers representatives we've had martin brain from lola and
20:00we've now got john manchester from janetta uh uh zaytek uh as the team's now called and uh john hi
20:07uh we do this every year with you don't we have to have our go at le mans um we've been so so
20:12impressed with the pace of the particular the stracker car which um was at one time threatening to
20:17take the petrol pole on thursday night danny watts went out i know again tried to do it but just got
20:22bought by traffic but what a fine sharing yeah i was very pleased obviously it's a new car essentially
20:27for this year very pleased with the performance um i think one encouraging thing was we wasn't using
20:32qualifying tires so obviously you probably get another two three seconds out of the car with
20:36qualifying tires so on that alone we're very very pleased with the overall performance of the car
20:40obviously continue to still develop the carter to improve it further yeah now just just to remind
20:45everyone exactly what's happened janetta and zaytek obviously now partners aren't they yeah um lawrence
20:51tomlinson who's the um owner of genetic cars he bought a 40 stake in zaytek engineering
20:56and we decided from a marketing point of view to uh to rebrand um the the zaytek name with janetta
21:04and it's just really a marketing exercise yeah let's just sorry just to interrupt for a moment
21:08this is the lead car sebastian borde has brought the number eight peugeot into the garage now is this
21:12going to be a major problem i mean we've been talking tonight about uh you know peugeot have got the
21:17pace but have they got the reliability in the game and john it takes we're told by previous winners it
21:23takes three years with a program to win this race and yeah i think this is the third year indeed i
21:28think le mans probably one of the the biggest engineering challenges we face you know to get
21:32a car and engine to complete 24 hours at the monics it's a big challenge now apparently i'm hearing this
21:37is only three laps into his stint for only three laps since his last stop so this is not going to be good
21:43for bejo in saying that they don't they don't look particularly panicked they do seem to know it
21:48looks as if they know what the problem is if you know what i mean yeah but at the same time the car
21:53is in the garage this is a really hot race right now they will not be able to afford to have this
21:58happen now this is going to fall into out his hands again if they're not careful alex works is going to
22:02have to pick up the baton isn't he for spending how long there is seabass sitting in the car distinctive
22:07helmet the multiple champ car champion this is not what he wanted he's from le mans it's his home
22:12track he's racing in front of his home crowd he does not want to be sitting in the garage
22:17no absolutely not so this is this is a huge blow for a pressure we're just gonna have to wait and see
22:21when they get back on the track and how much time they will have lost we'll monitor that but john sorry
22:26back to you with zytec and uh and janetta so bill gibson still is obviously hands-on but he and
22:31lawrence tomlinson are effectively partners now yeah zytec splitting to two companies a zytec automotive which
22:37are responsible for the design development of manufacture of the electronics for automotive
22:42and also motorsport and also electric vehicle technology we're probably one of the world
22:47leaders in electric vehicle technology and then zytec engineering are basically just a motorsport
22:52based based company producing lmp cars racing engines and also a lot of the manufacturing support
22:57for the rest of the zytec group yeah i mean your engines themselves have been hugely successful haven't
23:01they throughout the sport yeah um we've obviously um yeah sorry we're just going
23:07to olivier canal director of peugeot sport sorry about this john
23:15what's happened uh we asked him and
23:16well earlier in the race sebastian put a wheel off the track and uh
23:31it's on the curb
23:32i hope it's not going to take long to fix this we're going to be this one of other otherwise
23:43apart from that everything's been going really well
23:49i don't really yet know why he's had to come back into stands all we know is that uh
23:52he did put a wheel off it did look as if they almost had some of the suspension off the car
23:57just then um it was quite hard to tell from the scenes but certainly there must be something that
24:03uh sebastian is feeling must be a vibration or something he feels is is a problem enough to bring
24:07it in yeah so this may fall into the hands of audi as you've said and this is exactly what audi would
24:12be hoping would happen right now yeah but then again out we've got their own problems are they're going
24:15to be running through the night with these radiators uh john manchester getting they're getting stuffed
24:20up this is part of the phone yeah so hoovering stuff off the track yeah not part of the game
24:24plan i wouldn't think at the moment especially certainly not probably plenty to have these hands
24:28so going back to zytek for a moment while watching it we're just saying about how successful your
24:32engines has been as well as the chassis but you you are becoming the must-have customer chassis in lmp1
24:37now well i don't know i'd like to think so it's certainly the eight uh yeah we've obviously i
24:41think one of the advantages with zytek is we produce everything we do the chassis the electronics
24:45the engine in house and i think that integrates well as a package you you don't have to make too
24:50many compromises so the whole package is optimized really well and i think that that shows in the
24:54the performance of the car yeah but what effectiveness is your factory car the orange uh
24:59yeah that's the one that's had the bad luck so far this year yeah a factory car is probably not
25:04quite the right term to use but lawrence has actually bought that car and he's bought it basically
25:08to race at the moment it's more of a demonstrator so we can demonstrate it let people try the car the
25:13idea is people can go out and try try that car drive it uh which is what we did with the the asm
25:19people and the stracker people prior to them buying the cars and i think it works really well not many
25:23other people can offer that so that's really what that car's purpose is now the obvious question uh liz
25:28john is uh are you going to go the coupe route no plans to at the moment we did look at that seriously
25:33last year we looked at a lot of uh different areas of the car in cfd and we felt that it wasn't really
25:42worth the uh the expense to go coupé as opposed to the the open top route so no no plans at the
25:47moment certainly now i have to say i have heard in speaking to um you know people that know lawrence
25:52and her people driven the car all of them have said what an incredibly user-friendly car it is
25:57literally it's one of the nicest prototypes that people have driven you know especially for new
26:00drivers who don't have prototype experience they've said it's a car that as you get closer to the edge
26:05it's actually you know more like say user-friendly like you can actually handle the car at the edge
26:10whereas a lot of prototypes they're really loose and really you know you feel like you're on the
26:15limit and certainly the ones i've driven you know you're really hanging off the edge when you start
26:19to push it more but i've heard that that this particular car is one that they feel confident
26:23they could push a bit harder in which i think is great for drivers coming up into an lmp1 car you
26:27know it's a big jump forward for people like nigel moore and other drivers who haven't experienced that
26:32much power and carbon brakes and the downforce and i think that's a big asset for you i mean would you
26:36agree that's a big asset that you've managed to make such an incredibly user-friendly car yeah i think
26:40you're absolutely right anyone that has always driven that car the first time are absolutely
26:44amazed at the sheer ease of the car to drive talking to richard he's not richard dean he's not done a
26:49lot of driving in that car and he's probably um yesterday going into on friday going to sorry
26:55thursday going into qualifying he's probably only done his seventh competitive lap and he just said i
26:59kept pushing the car pushing the car and it's like this is all you've got to give me you know give me a bit
27:04more and he said he's just amazing amazing to drive it's so forgiving and i think that's one of the
27:08advantages of the car yes it's a very very easy car to drive yeah oh well certainly i'm jealous
27:15fantastic oh yeah won't catch me saying no to that well john manchester thank you very much for coming
27:21up just uh telling us all about zytec and uh we wish you all the best and uh just seeing where your
27:28your best car is at the moment that's uh where are we just looking down the list i think yeah it was
27:34danny watts is coming to the garage and i don't know what's going on for a while so i'm not quite
27:38sure what's happening okay yeah come back out anyway many thanks uh john and uh it's a pleasure
27:43we shall uh perhaps see you tomorrow morning sometime you know thank you very much thank you
27:49so just update you what's going on at the moment since we get the right timing screen it's alex
27:55verts leading now for peugeot but the peugeot sebastian bordet is still in the garage slipping
28:01down the order uh capello and lure and the audi's move into second and third anthony davidson's about
28:07to move up into fourth place he's only was only just a couple of minutes a couple of seconds behind
28:13and benio trolley we're going to take a break and when we come back we've got someone here from the uh
28:18aureka courage team nicholas lapierre and uh we'll have a quick so after the break come back with us
28:25still stay on eurosport 2 mark cole liz halliday and nicholas lapierre
28:39welcome back to eurosport we're just going to have a quick look at sebastian bordet he's been in the pits
28:44we don't know what the problem is yet even olivier canal of peugeot sport didn't know what the
28:48problem was uh here is sebastian we're just yeah justine is down there with uh stefan sarisan
29:00can you tell us anymore yet stefan
29:05well it's either either a pivot a wheel bearing or a wheel that came loose
29:09it's a shame it's cost us some time
29:18still 18 hours of the race still to go so uh you know we can catch up
29:25we're going to try and attack a little bit more make up some time
29:29thank you i think they've been doing plenty of attacking already but uh talking of attacking
29:33sebastian bordet the man from le mans he's just rejoined but we've got
29:36man from another famous circuit from manu courier your father uh nicola lapierre was i think race
29:41director of the the racing tool yeah that's you that's it so you're born into racing definitely
29:47and you're you're racing with hudius onax outfit this year your car at the moment in fact we're
29:51just looking on the screens you're the best of the open petrol cars yeah that's a very small category
29:58no i mean the car is getting good uh it's getting really better as the track is is quicker now we got
30:03some rubber down which was not the cane at the beginning of the race so now we are very pleased
30:09we want to make a no mistake race uh that's our point take no risk at all in the traffic on the
30:14track and i think we can expect coming back in the top eight or top six that would be wonderful for our
30:20car this is your your second participation at le mans uh great team mate got of course olivier panis
30:26so yeah are yes i mean olivier came back in the sport car last year and he's really enjoying it
30:34we are doing the 1000 kilometers race together as well so now we have a really good team i think
30:40the driver's level is quite uh close so i i hope we can achieve something good on this race
30:47this sorry i'm sitting there playing with my mic level there no i mean i i think it's fantastic to
30:55see these cars running so well and so quickly and um i mean it's it's still a relatively new car it's
31:01only been sort of two years i mean well how do you how do you feel about it in sort of the combination of
31:05of you know courage with with this car i mean the combination is good as you say it's still young i mean
31:11on this kind of race you need a lot of experience but i mean you know how to run the project uh he's
31:18a very clever man and he got a lot of experience in motorsport so we are putting things together at
31:24the moment it's quite difficult to fight for us because of the equivalency but i mean we are getting
31:30closer compared to last year so let's hope it goes even better next year well we wish you lots of luck
31:36we're being told that you're being rushed off to somewhere else so thank you very much for joining us
31:39even though it's only for a brief period of time and we wish you all the luck for the rest of the
31:43have a good race thank you nicolai thanks so jeremy shaw's uh come back upstairs and jeremy's going
31:48to take over for the next couple of hours and uh help us out so um liz interesting days here we are
31:56still on board with uh that's not capella it's your number one car no no it's the wrong one i think uh
32:02it's been a very active race there's been a lot going on we're actually barely even
32:06into this race that's the thing it seems like we've been going for hours and hours but in fact
32:10we're barely even scratching the surface of a 24-hour race so there's been so much action so
32:15far already hasn't there mark yeah this is alex vertz of course we ought to know that helmet by now
32:19from all these formula formula one days so alex uh 41 seconds over dindo capello's audi and uh lucas
32:26though about to come across the start finish line we'll just see what the gap is back to that and look at
32:30this already just telling slower cars you're there if anyone's been asking about the lights white
32:36lights for prototypes yellow lights for gt cars that's too in the dark when they're coming up behind
32:41you know exactly what's going on so liz that comes to the end of yours and my shift and uh martin is
32:47champing at the bit germ is champion they want to get into the action and uh they've been here
32:51listening to all our guests seeing what's going on and uh i think we're gonna have a long hard night
32:55ahead of us i think so too i'm looking forward to it actually all right we'll see you all later
33:02she says as she leaves yes martin what have you what have you seen on your your travels in the
33:08last couple of hours uh dinner and an ice cream actually uh excellent but obviously an awful lot
33:14of drama how this race is turning around already 18 hours remaining which means we're only six in we're
33:20a quarter distance we've seen drama in just about every category from every car alex sports leads
33:26for peugeot dindo capello and lucas law second and third for audi and actually one of the interesting
33:33periods uh in uh running out into the fresh air was to catch up with alan magnish the driver of course
33:38with dindo capella and tom christensen of the number one out here that's now in second place and
33:43after all our speculation of the first couple of hours of the race jeremy caught up with a driver who
33:49uh actually knows what's going on and got him to explain exactly what was happening with the cars
33:55and yes basically as we surmised this is kind of like the beginning of a nascar 500 mile race for
34:01for audi they are chasing the setup and alan explained it like this he said basically we've had four hours
34:07of dry running that was in qualifying on thursday he said the track is now in the sorted condition it would
34:13be after lunch on the saturday of a lamont test weekend it's just started to get rubbered in at
34:19the beginning of the race now of course we're six hours in so it's like we're starting sunday of the
34:23lamont test weekend and the track is very slippery very dirty very low grip and they're fighting chronic
34:30understeer in the car and they're changing the nose and the setup of the car trying to chase that grip
34:36and he said i said to him in the end how quick should you be going he said really we expect to be going
34:42within a second of the peugeot's outright pace we should be in the 26s maybe just shaving into the
34:4727s lap after lap after lap but he said even by matching their pace we can't beat them on that
34:54alone which is patently clear because they're behind yeah you know they nail on the head i mean they
35:02should be doing 26 37 regular basis in fact they've snuck in a couple of 27s most of the time they're in
35:08the 30s and the 31s uh so you know they're just not able to match the front running pace and yes
35:14it is a kind of a brand new car i mean it debuted at sebring in march how long ago was that three
35:19months ago um whatever we do what have they been doing for the last three months testing it relentlessly
35:24but on the track on the track where they know the grip levels presumably quite and there's no other cars
35:29out on the track that are causing any problems uh and they what they didn't do was the first two
35:33le mans series races of this year did they did they so you know you kind of they kind of show
35:37themselves in the foot a little bit they would have learned a lot more by doing those thousand
35:42kilometer races they would have learned a lot more about the car but it still wouldn't have made the
35:46track any less uh green so no but they would have learned how you know the balance is affected when
35:51more rubber gets laid down under different racing conditions and you know bottom line is they're
35:56really not properly prepared which is very very surprising for for that man for i mean wolfgang
36:02ulrich is you know about as germanic as you could possibly get and structured and organized and
36:08and everything and and yet painfully you know they're not ready for this race which is which is
36:12very surprising to me absolutely it's the 10th anniversary of their first appearance here
36:17and you're right it is a very un audi state state of preparedness it's not that they're
36:23totally unprepared it's just that they're not a hundred percent on the ball having said that
36:29they are second and third at the moment and back on the lead lap yes so now anything can happen
36:35it's now the number nine perjure alex verts is leading dindo capello is about 43 seconds back in
36:41second place and lucas lu also now with that problem for sebastian baudet is also back on the lead lap
36:47just a minute or so behind the race leader and our fourth place car let's get this right our fourth
36:52placed car overall 008 uh anthony davidson is on pit road the lola aston martin now if this was the
37:01last hour of the race and the number nine perjure had a 43 second lead over dindo capello i'd be
37:08thinking do you know what that's possibly still in the balance we've got 18 hours to go and
37:15and peugeot have got one car between audi leading this race and audi being first and second in this
37:21race in fact and that's not really very much of a don't forget the 17 pescarola car got taken out
37:28by the seven car which got taken out by the 17 car whoops two of the four balls dropped in one
37:34foolish collision now that obviously shook them up and we did see for the first time that i can remember
37:40some very very sharp pit stopping by peugeot in that second safety car period the seven car was
37:46first on the pit road and whatever the french is for or you get out of the way was instantly
37:51communicated he pulled right out of the way and allowed eight and nine to come in do their pit
37:55stops get gone that is properly audi stroke porsche pit work that is absolutely on the money without
38:02any question they knew what was coming up before it came up and that's the only way to win them on but
38:08they now have had their problem with the number eight car i'm afraid i've had my headset off so
38:12i didn't know what it was but well i gather he ran off the road i was didn't imagine but he ran off
38:17the road and there's clearly a problem i think i believe they changed the left rear corner on that
38:22car and it's cost them uh surprisingly little i mean bordet is actually now back within two laps so it's just
38:30over one lap down and in sixth place three official retirements now the 77 Porsche ran out of fuel the
38:3868 j-lock lamborghini never ran out of luck well it ran out of drive shafts and didn't qualify ran out
38:44of engine and didn't really effectively start the race and uh the kifal asm genetta zytek ran out of
38:51spare parts presumably as miguel amoral kept bidding it lap after lap yeah there was a brake prop there was
38:56apparently a brake problem on that car and he finally caused some damage to the tub of the car the
39:02monocot was damaged so that was the end of their race i did say when we first saw him go off and
39:06especially when we saw him go off a second time that's really not like him he's a very good
39:11gentleman driver and i was most surprised i would have been uh frankly quite flabbergasted if there was
39:17not a properly sensible explanation for it and actually while we're having a look look at this
39:23how cheeky is that would you get that out of my way i thought for a moment actually he was flashing a
39:29perjot he's not he's flashing a speedy sabat lola coupe uh the uh is that number 10 or 11 oreca car
39:36uh it looks like it might well be soy aliyari flashing that blue speedy sabar car as they weave their
39:43way through the porsche curves and jeremy you know so much drama looking like it's hours till it gets dark
39:49even and that's when all the witches come out yeah isn't that fact uh number just a little note here we
39:54we saw a note up on the screen there from the skewards car number 84 which is um the team modena
40:01a ferrari f430 has just been warned for improper use of the circuit or something or disrespect not
40:08not respecting the circuit limits well which means he'll have been going inside the white lines
40:12probably at the chicanes on the mall side there aren't too many other places you can really pinch an
40:17inch well you can pinch an inch but more than that you can't really go over the white line in too many
40:22places without it costing a lot of money and hurting quite a bit so it's normally cutting the inside of
40:28the chicane of the mulsanne and that is not deliberate that's a bit of an oops oh my goodness trying to
40:33almost straight line it so let's run through where we are then after uh six hours and ten minutes alex
40:41verts leads for peugeot audi are not far behind top three cars on the lead lap and that's a big step
40:48forward for audi in a big retrograde step for peugeot dinde capello's audi number one is 46 seconds back
40:53lucas lure a minute and 16 seconds back in third yeah it does just doesn't it just show that how
40:59quickly things can change in this motor race i mean peugeot was dominating out it weren't they we were
41:04we were kind of writing them off almost shame on us of course you never write off out and write
41:09off out and now with that problem but two cars not not one but two cars back on the lead lap so now
41:15maybe if i go and talk to mcnish again in a few minutes by the time i've finished the other
41:19peugeot will have gone and he'll be back in the lead like he said they can't beat them just by doing
41:25the same speed you know when you're behind you can't beat them by being just as quick as them
41:30so uh yeah everything everything can and will change this race is like a junkyard dog turn your
41:35back on it it bites you in the ass yeah so fourth place one lap down is a pescarolo peugeot
41:40car number 17 when i truly at the big wheel at the moment in fifth place also one lap down
41:46anthony davidson in the lola aston martin double eight and sebastian baudet in number eight so that
41:52is the top half dozen peugeot prepare for another pit stop we'll be back live with more action from
41:57le mans here on eurosport two in a second
42:02welcome back live to le mans benoit treluye received service at the pescarolo peugeot team this car is
42:09fourth overall gas and go clean off a few bugs martin haven simon hill and the man with the
42:15clipboard jeremy shaw how many laps on that properly up to 13 or still struggling to make 12 uh 12 that
42:23time around uh the last uh actually the last three stops have all been 12 laps was 13 the stop before
42:29that so um you know they're i think they're just running to their own pace i think they got they got
42:34their game plan they're trying to follow it nice stick there from benoit treluye nothing special you
42:40don't have to do anything special particularly when you got that car up into fourth place well he does
42:44actually because he's got little ant behind him in the 008 aston martin and and stopped a lap before
42:51benoit treluye in that lola aston martin and so there is a good battle going on there for fourth place
42:59davidson at the moment is already top petrol engine car and is now looking to slay another giant
43:05lots of fans were asking early on how the lola aston martin's gonna fare what we think they might do
43:11lots of people seem to have seized on this magic do you think there's a chance of a top five well
43:16a few laps ago we had both of them nudging up into the top five and at the moment we have one with 18
43:22hours to go still in the top five lord paul drayson's car still running in the gt2 category as well but
43:28outside the top eight in that class but again really they are looking to finish the race and uh
43:34lord paul jason in his uh paul lord jason rather in his first weekend as the new defense minister
43:40supporting armed forces day in the uk which is june the 21st i believe next weekend so he's now the new
43:48finish for defense alex woods in for service of course that is our current race leader in is the
43:54delayed number seven which is now 16th pedro larmy was released early from the pit lane in the first
44:01hour and got collected by the incoming number 17 pescarolo team perjo and at the time henry pescarolo was
44:09not particularly always number one comes down pit road oh busy busy
44:14simon it's um one of those after nothing happens for 25 minutes moments suddenly everybody's on pit
44:20road and again we've seen this last year exactly what's happening every pit stop every single driver
44:25change every single tire fuel situation seemed to throw something else up plus we've had the chaos that
44:31was perjo at the beginning as you just mentioned there and now we've had this situation with the
44:35problem for the for the eight car and the interesting thing is that i was talking to some of the guys
44:41from audios to oliver jarvis who races for audi and dtm he has been talking to some of the engineers
44:46who he obviously works with a lot on the dtm program and said that really we haven't got an answer
44:50for for persia on pace however we know that we can run the pace we're at all day all night no problems
44:56and we think that that's where it might come back to us and i talked to alan mignish as well about
45:00fuel i said how many laps can you do he said 13. i said can you squeeze 14 he said 13. and i said but
45:08persia were doing 13s and 12s he said yeah they can't do 13 all the time so it looks like they can
45:15do two two 12s and then maybe eek out to 13 from the drakes that are left but he doesn't think they
45:21can do 13 every time and for years it's been that fuel economy that has swung the balance for audi but of
45:29course luck needs to go hand in hand with it it does the interesting thing if you remember a little bit
45:33earlier on when we saw that tremendous opening stint by frank montagne in the eight car immediately the
45:39the man stefan sarazen goes out and laps considerably slower than montagne in the great scale of things
45:45and we start to hypothesize as we do about this that and the other we wonder maybe that would
45:50could potentially easily be that can we get our 12 and a half laps to 13 laps if we run at x time
45:56instead of uh let's try and drive away from the field time and that could well have been the logic they're
46:00replying the purges are getting they're getting 12 between sometimes 12 sometimes 13 laps uh last
46:09stop for the number eight car was actually well it was only three laps because that was a problem
46:14wasn't it for that car before that though actually they got 14 laps admittedly the beginning of that was
46:19under the safety car uh whereas the last stop for the audi they did 12 laps and then 13 laps this time
46:27are up in their last two pit stops so it really is nick nip and tuck i think with audi and peugeot
46:32on the fuel and certainly the audi isn't doesn't have the advantage that it had last year quick word
46:37on the number three audi as well apparently dr orish has just been saying that there's some problem with
46:42the fuel pickup so whether it's a pickup in the tank whether it's a pump problem or not so we we also
46:47were told that at one stage we thought it might have been a turbo problem but maybe that's actually
46:52related to lack of fuel rather than lack of turbo so they i think they're they're working backwards
46:57from no power to the source in that car also had a turbo problem on uh in qualified i think i think
47:04that's right it was a much longer stop of course this time around do you think it could be a bit
47:08like back in the uh the bad old days of ferrari in the 70s when they had reliability issues and
47:13they said we have an electrical issue with the engine and the problem is conrod's gone through the
47:17alternator that kind of thing we we haven't seen them lately as that was the uh just behind
47:23the uh johnny kane's car yeah is uh is the gt1 leader uh johnny o'connell who's still running
47:30absolutely beautifully in there in that number 63 car he's now uh he's actually oh the 64 car is on the
47:38lead lap a couple of minutes behind and then luke alfond uh is driving number 72 car and behind him
47:46his teammate yank clare they are a couple of laps behind the two factory gm corpus meanwhile in lmp2
47:54is still kunimoto who leads the team go in the porsche rs spider but emmanuel colard has been
48:00gradually chipping away at the advantage that kunimoto had built up so emmanuel colard now in the team
48:06essex porsche rs spider within well three seconds or so of the class lead in lmp2 and the speedy sabal
48:14car of johnny kane third in the lmp2 class ahead of chris dyson in the rml lola that is still in
48:20fourth thordie goes to land's car we just saw on pit road the car he shares with karimo j that's in
48:25fifth philip philip pater has now left the pits in that car and in sixth place is the barazzi epsilon
48:31car now onto pit road comes lucas lure incidentally cadillac boy emailed us lemond.eurosport
48:37at yahoo.com wanted to know if doug feehan was here well yes he is with all the other pratt
48:42miller and uh corvette racing guys and we will try and get uh sebastian maybe uh or justine to go
48:48down and have a chat with him feehan of course has been the architect of this program right from
48:53as he would have it the get-go and uh now we'll be leading them after hopefully another glorious
48:59one-two at le mans on towards the gt2 program and in fact we had an email earlier jeremy maybe
49:04you're the man for this uh talking about the differences between racing here and racing in
49:09the states and particularly in the in the rolex series how do lmp1 and lmp2 prototypes compare
49:16to the daytona prototype so we touched on this with uh john from master speed yesterday on thursday
49:21now didn't we but uh i suppose an lmp2 car would be a little closer but probably still a little quicker
49:28wouldn't it yeah i think quite a bit quicker uh to be honest uh yes by design though because
49:35john was saying wasn't he was saying that uh the idea in the in the daytona prototypes is not to
49:40have them ridiculously fast compared to the gt classes so that there's no not so much danger in
49:47the closing speeds yeah that's right and also they don't they've worked very hard the rolex gt guys
49:51to keep their costs under control uh it's it's not cheap but it's certainly cheaper than a properly run
49:57lmp2 car um so you know you're kind of comparing apples and oranges with yes i think i think the
50:03parallel with lmp2 though is the fact that you see a lot of the cars that use essentially the same
50:07chassis but a different type of engine which you can see obviously the low lola and lmp2 is a great
50:12great example of that how they could do that um but of course i think the real key thing is if you
50:16look at this lola mp2 car that we see at the moment essentially it's the same as the lmp1 car with
50:21some modifications in terms of weight in terms of power output and aero etc so chassis wise you've got the
50:27same foundations to work with and that's really where the significant difference comes in i think
50:32now after we've seen uh so many problems for them onto pit road for a routine service as we watch
50:38the 33 lola racing round is the 39 uh ks uh ksn uh skm kill ship chiller cruise cruise chiller
50:50motorbike i knew it was there in summer uh the 39 lola master the one that had crashed during the wet
50:56practice and that has been nothing but trouble for his crew now they seem to have beaten the
51:01willful beast into some sort of submission and am i right is that hideki noda in the car it
51:06certainly looks like his helmet it's not trying to portalis i don't think it's matthew marsh so no
51:12we believe is suffering from quite a lot of food poisoning uh is actually in the car meanwhile on the
51:18front straight here is the battle jeremy that you were building up a little moment or two ago our lmp2
51:24class leaders kunimoto versus collar and that is first and second team go versus team essex
51:31i wouldn't give it till the end of the lap with manu connor with a head of steam behind him would you
51:36that's right he's narrowed that gap down from about 14 seconds down to what you can see there just a
51:41couple of uh porsche rs spider dents uh but kunimoto hands off to the to the boy he's 20 years old
51:48first time uh in a in a le mans prototype certainly here at le mans anyhow and he's done a very very
51:53very respectable job i mean collard has a massive amount of experience in all sorts of different
51:59cars including the porsche rs spider and it's taken him about an hour to reel him in and look at the
52:06run also interesting kunimoto there typical single-seater driver former three and nippon driver a little
52:12bit of wobbling a little bit of weaving perfectly legit as long as it's only one move but normally
52:17in sports car racing is that okay the guy's quicker let him go we'll worry about it in the
52:20strategy in the stop well and actually kunimoto inherited that car in second place don't forget
52:26he took the lead from team essex at the beginning of his stint and now although the the headlamps
52:31and the essex car are melting the paint off the back bumper of his team go effort he's not going to
52:36give this up without a bit of a go that's right he's been at the wheel of this car for quite a long
52:39time now and when he took the lead it was caspar elgar who was driving the team essex car now since
52:44then elgar has handed over to uh manu collard and collard is just just a little bit quicker now then
52:51this is going to come to an early end because out on the pit apron we can see the team go mechanics
52:57they are getting ready to receive their car but right next door to them the 66 jet alliance crew are
53:02coming out as well there is no such thing as a quiet pit lane here at le mans plenty of bouchon here's the
53:07number 11 car the orica car of cliari this is ninth at the moment hannis just taking over uh
53:14interesting to see his experience essential at this point but of course remember last year had a car
53:18quite a good run going and then marcel fassler of course is one of the corvette drivers this year
53:23had a fairly substantial accident out on the uh at morsal in the middle of the night which ended that
53:28one fairly comprehensively as the gt2 aston martin leaves the pit lane again in comes the entire lead
53:34battle look at this it's a race off pit road oh i was just going to say that generally speaking
53:38these who are coming on the same lap and that's exactly what they're doing right now excellent
53:42bumping him up to the speed i say now if manu color was a real game so he just pushed the team go
53:47car into the pit lane over the speed limit and get them a penalty the interesting thing this maybe
53:52explains why kuramoto was being quite robust in his defense maybe the team said look we could you know
53:57this could be significant as it pans out later in the race keep him behind you might have to be a little
54:02bit robust but you know do what you have to do previous lap sorry collar was uh nearly four
54:08seconds quicker on the previous lap on the lap they came in he was only three tenths quicker kunimoto's
54:14what i was going to say i think there's going to be a driver change and it is indeed a driver change
54:20sasha masson versus manu color okay baby nothing between them let's race i was just thinking actually
54:28that this could have been significant because you look at uh oh wait they didn't change tires on the
54:34driver collar goes out could be significant because in the essence car with the greatest respect
54:38potentially the weakest thing is christian paulsen out of that but you look at the other three drivers
54:43you know we've just seen kunimoto clearly doesn't have an issue with pace and the other two drivers are
54:47and uh uh masson we know just how fast these guys are so let's be honest that on paper the the go
54:54car looks a better package doesn't it yeah you're right sage yara foot former overall winner 14 go
55:00with the audi team go and of course sasha masson for porsche has won in his class as well here and in
55:05the american levon series so sasha really up for this battle all weekend okay now he's fresh in he's got
55:13fresh rubber he's 30 seconds behind how long is he going to take him to close down manu color yeah the
55:19battle is honest that was a much longer pit stop that i think they would have wanted down there
55:22in the uh team go pit however as we've said all along it's still heck of a long way to go in this
55:30race it's happening up at the front but the the lap times have dropped amongst the leaders
55:35alex first last couple laps 3 30 odds 3 32 that time around as the seventh place lola aston martin jan
55:43shrews brings his car on too quickly yes this is starting to get very exciting isn't it we're
55:50going to take a quick commercial break to allow us at least to bring our heart rate down a moment
55:54or two joe just to uh remind you thanks sheila marison i only glimpsed the sticker didn't read it
55:58properly national armed forces day 27th of june that paul lord jason and everybody else here
56:06supporting we'll be back with more live coverage from le mans in just a second
56:09welcome back live to le mans on eurosport 2 british eurosports and across europe and asia
56:19martin haven jeremy shaw here watching the battles well throughout the field jeremy there's
56:25well i should say there's not a quiet class i almost said apart from gt1 but in fact
56:29there's a titanic battle going on between the two factory corvettes for the dominant force in that and
56:35that battle was split up by the first safety car they were part put half a lap apart second safety
56:40car close them back up to within 20 seconds of each other so game on between those two we've just seen
56:45the lead change twice uh or just uh just in fact in the pit lane in the lmp2 category and sebastian
56:52bordet in fourth place in a delayed peugeot is now as we ride on board with him on the fastest lap of
57:00anyone in the race well bordet a few moments or two ago showing just how close you have to cut things
57:12diving through on anthony davidson and that was fourth and fifth positions
57:19bordet moving up into fourth place his second sector which is down the mulsanne straight basically to uh
57:25uh mulsanne corner that was the fastest anybody has done in the entire race you can see as anthony
57:31davidson comes around the corner the peugeot is already heading onwards and upwards checking out
57:36and leaving the lola aston behind jeremy and that was the three minutes 26.9 the previous lap by
57:43sebastian bordet so he's certainly got the hammer down now to make up for that apparent error by him earlier
57:49on we don't know if we don't know if it's an error no color's audi that is i think either the 14 or 15
57:55cars surely no is it oh is it an r15 it's car number two that is lucas lord third place car my
58:05rockenfella had dramas a couple of years ago and now lucas lord that is the entrance to the porsche curves
58:10i think i think that's where you turn off the normal public road just as you flick right jamie davis
58:17will be able to tell me if it is or it isn't now then game over safety car surely we must see a
58:22safety car absolutely but look at this on board the car is all over the place it's a puncture it is
58:26not right isn't it definitely it's bouncing up and down that is yeah something broken off gone flat at the
