00:00Sunday, NASCAR Victory Lane takes center stage on speed, pop the cork, and break out the
00:10confetti as John, Jimmy, and Kenny discuss the highlights of today's race from Michigan.
00:15Plus, today's winners climb out of his car and onto the set for a post-race interview.
00:20NASCAR Victory Lane, Sunday, 8 Eastern, on speed.
00:23And the number three, Copyware Corvettes, in, 10th overall, a little bit further down the class than they like, the number 63 entry, and we believe Ron Fellows has just stepped out of the car.
00:38There's Danny Binks, checking everything over, saying it's clear, you're on your way.
00:43Of course, still working on the back of that car from early, early yesterday when Johnny O'Connell had a little misfortune with the barrier there, and they just keep putting more tape on it, more tape on it.
00:53On it, hanging tough.
00:55Yeah, that left rear corner, you can see there's a little bit of damage at the back, and they've got that real heavy, vinyl, super sticky wrap on it.
01:03I noticed that in front of the wheel arch, too, now there's a little bit of damage there that's starting to come through, and that's of the concern, certainly.
01:11The car sits in the 10th overall spot, and that would be 6th in GT1 right now.
01:18And just three laps at this stage behind that number 72, Luke Alfond Adventures car, the C5R, so these guys just plugging away at it, and they certainly know that anything can unfold.
01:31Of course, that is Johnny O' back behind the wheel, relieving my old teammate, Ron Fellows.
01:36That's the number 39 Chamberlain Synergy entry that, excuse me, that's the number 19, that's the team car, which actually runs in the P1 division with Gareth Owens, Gareth Evans, Peter Owen, and Bob Barrage.
01:50That's a Lola B0-610 AER, and that runs in the P1 category.
01:55They're, I believe, the only team here that's running two different classes.
02:04And here's the number 87 again, the Scuderia.
02:07It costs Ferrari of Kerkaldi, Mullen, and the Archos, and that car's still struggling there in the pit garage.
02:14Yeah, they're back there working on that wheel hub or that mono lug that is not coming off that hub.
02:21Wrong pit stop for these guys.
02:23This is going to be a really big problem.
02:26Trying to get that off.
02:27They might have to chisel it off.
02:28I've seen that done before.
02:29It does a lot of damage, and they might have to replace the whole hub.
02:33But once the one's locked on like that, you're pretty much at the mercy.
02:37It's not coming off.
02:38Well, obviously, they're just going to have to continue to plug away at it right now as we're watching some of the action.
02:46There is that LNT team, Panos, and behind it, the Intersport entry.
02:52And we've been talking a little bit about what's unfolding with the Corvettes,
02:55the great battle the 64 is involved in, and the comeback after O'Connell's moment for the number 63.
03:00Well, this year marks Corvettes' victory in international road racing.
03:05And Lee Diffie has the story of its first appearance here at Le Mans.
03:12Corvette first came to Le Mans in 1960 and tasted success when John Fitch, the tall gentleman,
03:19and Bob Grossman won the GT class driving for Briggs Cunningham.
03:23Wearing the blue and white colours that traditionally identified American entries in international racing,
03:28there were three Cunningham Corvettes and three pairs of racers.
03:31Cunningham and Bill Kimberley, Dick Thompson and Fred Windridge, and Fitch and Grossman.
03:38In the waning hours of the race, the team's lone remaining car was the Fitch and Grossman Corvette,
03:43but its engine was suffering overheating problems and had lost its coolant.
03:48Regulations prohibited the team from refilling the radiator.
03:51Yankee ingenuity triumphed, however, when the crew packed the engine with ice from the team's catering tent.
03:57Driving at reduced speed, the ice-cooled, small-block V8 powered Fitch and Grossman to an eighth-place finish overall.
04:05The best by a Corvette until the arrival of Corvette Racing's C5Rs some 40 years later.
04:11And their record, certainly in this millennium, has been pretty spectacular.
04:22Obviously, in the year 2000, the third and fourth, then two consecutive wins,
04:26and in 2003, a second and third behind the ProDrive Ferrari, and then sweeps again in 04 and 05.
04:33And, obviously, the 0405 sweeps in the hands of the gentlemen who are battling for that lead right now,
04:40Gavin Beretta and Magnuson, and they are going for a third straight.
04:45One problem is a very fast Aston Martin that just is refusing to go quietly.
04:52There's a look at that number 30 entry we saw, a rather spectacular moment from earlier, Darcy.
04:57That is one tough little car, I gotta tell you.
04:58That went bound in through the chicane, got airborne, turned in, like you say, a shovel.
05:04And somehow still manages to run around out there.
05:11This is the Team Taizan Advan car that we've talked a little bit about in the GT2 category, the Porsche.
05:17Philip Collin, Yamaji Nijizawa, and Shinji Yamaji driving this one.
05:23Glad you took that.
05:28Boy, just again, look at all the debris on the track out there.
05:34You watch them working through the chicane under the Dunlop Bridge.
05:38And, I mean, not only is it tire rubber, Darcy, but there's an awful lot of that very sharp flint-like gravel that they use here.
05:44For some reason, I don't understand why you use something that sharp in a gravel trap.
05:48Yeah, I mean, it's not like the gravel we have back home.
05:50This, when you go out there and you grab a handful of that, it's very flint-like, and it's very sharp.
05:56Here's the moment we were talking about.
06:00Here's the wrong shard.
06:02Gets it wrong coming into the chicane, and it just keeps getting worse.
06:05You talk about compounding the problem.
06:07Now we're airborne.
06:09Now we're really airborne.
06:10Now we're a shovel.
06:11And that's huge, huge amount of stress on the underbody of that car.
06:16And look, it didn't even knock the nose off.
06:18I think the fasteners must be just unbelievable.
06:21Very sturdy, very sturdy indeed.
06:25Here's the number 19 Chamberlain Synergy car, a problem once again.
06:29They were just in.
06:30They're back in again.
06:31And when we come back, we are going to have a visit with Ron Fellows, driver of the number 63 Coffeeware Corvette.
06:39Here are your four class leaders at Le Mans.
06:41Welcome back to Speed's live coverage of the 74th running of the Michelin 24 Hours of Le Mans.
06:53You are watching a long pit stop for the Intersport team.
06:57That is Clint Field behind the wheel.
06:59And, you know, with the advent of technology, it's not always a driver's best friend.
07:02You can learn a lot from it.
07:04But, you know, telemetry, data, and onboard cameras, a look at the Intersport's opinion of the onboard camera, at least from the driver's perspective.
07:13Yeah, I didn't hit him and push him off the road.
07:15What are you talking about?
07:15Oh, sorry.
07:16Didn't get near him.
07:17Oh, I did.
07:18Lie detector.
07:19All right.
07:20We're very happy to have with us down in the pits on our shot cam down there, Ron Fellows, who just got out recently at the number 63 Coffeeware Corvette.
07:28And, Ron, from fairly early in the going here, you guys have been in chase mode.
07:32And it looks like you guys have just been putting your heads down and doing whatever you can.
07:36You've worked yourself up to 10th overall right now.
07:38First of all, considering the damage and the fact that we're past halfway, how's the car going?
07:43Yeah, it's handling fine.
07:44We're a little bit oversteer getting into the corners, but it's still pretty – it's still very drivable.
07:54It'd be a lot worse if we were loose in and pushy in the center.
07:59But we're – it's just the entry part you've got to be a little bit careful with, and then it's fine.
08:03It's kind of been like that from the – since I got in it.
08:07And, no, we're good.
08:09Corvettes are running well.
08:10We've got a little catching up to do.
08:12We've had a few more problems with the 63.
08:15Just, you know, we have been unlucky pretty much all season, and it seems to be carrying on here in France.
08:24I thought we could lose it in North America, but apparently not.
08:27What other problems have you had of note?
08:29Clutch problem.
08:32Max got a three-minute stop-and-go for some bogus deal.
08:37Not sure what it was, but he got the park and wait.
08:41Costs a bunch of time.
08:45Yeah, and then Johnny had his problem in the Porsche curves.
08:49So, anyway, we're hanging in there.
08:52Well, at least you've been behaving so far.
08:55So far.
08:57Got to ask you, we're seeing a lot of the shots that we have.
09:01Certainly one that's real prevalent right now is up into the Dunlop Bridge area.
09:05A tremendous amount of junk off the line on the track,
09:09including those flint-like, really hard pieces of gravel that they seem to like here for some reason.
09:14How bad is that being, especially if you come on traffic, I suppose?
09:17Well, yeah, the problem is the way the track kind of falls away on the approach.
09:22You don't see it until you hit it, and it's too late.
09:25So you just kind of drive your way through it.
09:28And I've had a couple of incidents now where that arrowhead-shaped stone cut a tire.
09:34Cut a tire on Thursday night.
09:36Just similar to what had happened here two years ago on the way to the first chicane and managed to catch it,
09:41primarily because there's a little more room to wobble back and forth with a blown left rear.
09:46And I kept the stone, and I have it in my room.
09:50I'm going to keep it.
09:50And it looks like an arrowhead.
09:54Well, while you guys are playing catch-up mode, it's been cool through the night, so it hasn't been too bad.
09:58But, you know, the sun's out now.
10:00It's kind of...
10:01Which is that an issue?
10:02Well, you know, we've got a pretty decent cockpit in our Corvette C6R.
10:10So the hot air is more of a...
10:17You don't really notice it until you get out of the car because you're breathing relatively cool air from our air conditioner,
10:23and there's some decent air coming in.
10:25But it's very hot around your legs, and you lose a lot of water.
10:30And you notice it when you go to get out of the car more so than when you're driving.
10:34Well, one of the things that the ACO is looking at, it appears,
10:37is mandatory air conditioning units in some of the closed cockpit cars.
10:41And, Ronnie, why don't you hang tight because we want to get your opinion on this.
10:43But a little bit earlier, Darcy Schrader took a look at the proposed systems relative specifically to the Corvette.
10:50No.
10:51No.
10:52The subject of mandatory air conditioning on all of the cars at Le Mans has really caused a controversy.
10:58Although it's not mandated into a rule yet, it might come in the future.
11:02The people at Corvette Racing have dealt with this problem for quite a long time,
11:05and they address that heat in several different ways.
11:08One is to shield the driving compartment from all the heat of the car,
11:11the engine transmission, the exhaust, etc.
11:13Try to keep that heat away from where the driver is.
11:16Secondly, the air conditioning, the helmet of the driver.
11:20They bring ambient air in from outside.
11:22They run it through an intercooler, which drops the temperature of that air about 30 degrees,
11:27pumping air conditioning right into the helmet of the driver, keeps it more fresh.
11:30But they've taken it a step further.
11:31The seat of the car itself is hollow.
11:33They bring the same ambient air, which is hot, run it through a cooler, and they pump it up through the seat.
11:39The seat has holes in it from where the driver sits,
11:41and that cold air kind of encapsulates his body to keep his core temperature lower.
11:45Now, that drops the interior temperature of the Corvette some 25 to 30 degrees.
11:49But will that be enough for the rule when it comes out?
11:51That's yet to be seen.
11:55And, Ron, earlier we were talking to Luke Alfano in one of the interviews,
11:58and they are running an air conditioning system.
12:00I mean, he said over the night they've been seeing temperatures 27 degrees centigrade thereabouts in the car.
12:05I mean, that's pretty remarkable, isn't it?
12:07Yeah.
12:07I'm not sure that's entirely accurate.
12:13It may be the temperature that's in the hose that's blowing into your helmet.
12:18That would make more sense.
12:20But, no, it's just trying to extend my career another 10 years or something.
12:27It's ridiculous.
12:28You know, it's like trying to air condition an acre of land in Phoenix in July.
12:33You know, it's just ain't going to work.
12:34Well, that's what we said, you know, the ACO would like to see under 38 degrees Celsius in the car.
12:39Well, you can park a car out with the windows rolled up and go way over that.
12:43In about 10 minutes.
12:45Yeah.
12:46You know, it's come an awful long way between the filters and the quality of the air that we breathe.
12:53From when we first came here in 2000, I mean, it was very, very difficult.
12:58But now it's our guys have just done such a great job.
13:01We've got holes in the seat to blow some air in your back.
13:05You try to seal off the area around your helmet, around your face area.
13:09And that cool air that's coming in is generally 25 or 30 degrees cooler than the air that's inside the car.
13:16And that sometimes when it's hot, you think, oh, is this thing working?
13:21And you go to turn it off and it's like instantly like an oven.
13:23So I just don't know how you could get the entire cockpit that cool.
13:29I mean, it's the engine's in front.
13:31That's the deal.
13:32You know, and all that, you know, 427 V8 makes a lot of heat.
13:38You know, if they want to take half the horsepower away, that'll probably do it.
13:42That'll fix the heat problem.
13:43Now, Ronnie, hang tight for a sec.
13:44Brian Till, you've got a little bit more on this, don't you?
13:47Well, yeah, you know, cooling is a big issue.
13:49It always is in France.
13:50You talk about the air conditioning.
13:51The other thing that they don't cool a lot over here is your drinks.
13:54But Corvette is taking care of that so that guys like Ron Fellows can be comfortable.
13:58They have the only one in pit lane.
14:00Yeah, you got it, baby.
14:02The ice maker and Corvette, in addition to taking care of their drivers, they take care of the team.
14:07$5,700 spent at Costco on what?
14:10You got it.
14:10Junk food.
14:11What about it, Ron?
14:13Any ruffles in there?
14:16Oh, yeah.
14:18I'll tell you what.
14:19They don't miss anything.
14:21It's, I think, every year we come here, our guys just get better and better organized.
14:26It becomes a, it's a well-oiled machine.
14:29You know, obviously what happens on the racetrack is completely unpredictable, but our guys are extremely well-prepared and I'm just proud to be a part of it.
14:40Hey, Ronnie, you joked about extending your career by 10 years, but I do have to ask you, your drive at Long Beach in the Caddy, obviously, man, you still got it and you still love it.
14:50That last corner, last couple of corner paths, how sweet was that?
14:55I mean, that's got to be what it's all about.
14:57Well, it was good fun.
15:00And, you know, I certainly learned a lot about street racing and racing a Trans-Ev series.
15:05And certainly when Dorsey and I were teammates, I said it at Long Beach, and he was just unbelievable on a street search.
15:14I remember him at Des Moines just waxing everybody.
15:17And it took me a while to figure it out, but it was a lot of fun.
15:22I enjoy those cars a bit closer to the Nextel Cup Monte Carlo where, you know, there's the finesse aspect that I really enjoy.
15:32And that race, I felt bad for Mike McCann, but in retrospect, if I'd have made the move a lap earlier, he'd have passed me again and I never would have done it.
15:43So it really worked out.
15:44It was certainly fun to call it, and it was a lot of fun to watch it.
15:47And we certainly hope you're around racing for a long time because you're a real treat, Ronnie.
15:51And thanks for stopping by and visiting with us and go get yourself some rest.
15:54Hey, thanks.
15:54Hey, what happened in the hockey game last night?
15:57Edmonton and Carolina.
15:58Anybody know?
15:59Edmonton 4-Zip.
16:01Sweet.
16:02Yeah, eh?
16:04Sorry, Mr. Carmanos.
16:07It's my passport.
16:11Bye, Ron.
16:11Thanks very much.
16:12Thanks, guys.
16:13All right.
16:15And there you see it.
16:16Nine and a half hours remaining according to the big Rolex here at Le Mans.
16:20And we're going to show you our top ten overall.
16:23We're going to step away.
16:24Please do come right back with us.
16:31Welcome back to Le Mans, everybody.
16:33Great to have you with us for our live coverage here on Speed.
16:36And we're going to show you the class leaders, the leaderboards in each of the four divisions that are running here.
16:42In P1, it is the Audi, number eight.
16:45Right now, in the hands of Frank Biela, leading the number 17 Pescarolo Judd and the team number seven Audi in the hands of Tom Christensen.
16:53In P2, it is the number 25 RML.
16:56The same type of car that's the Lola, the same type of car that we see racing frequently in the states in the hands of the Intersport Squad.
17:02They lead over the 27, a great run by the Courage of Miracle Motorsports and the 24 entry of Tirada, Binny, and Timpani, the Binny Motorsports entry.
17:12We take a look at GT.
17:14It is this glorious battle that is continuing to unfold between the 009 Aston Martin and the 64 Corvette.
17:20And then a few laps adrift, a bit of a surprise, the number 62 Aston Martin of Nelson P.K. Jr., Garcia, and Brabs.
17:28And in GT2, the number 83 Cycle Motorsport entry leads it over the 86 Spiker, which is, again, a great story in the unfolding.
17:37And then the 93 Tizen Advan entry.
17:40And a great story on that number 83 Cycle entry.
17:43That car was not initially even going to run here.
17:46It was on the reserve list, but one of the Ferrari, the Acer Brakes Ferrari entry, that had been on the invited list, had a huge crash at the Spa 1000.
17:55They couldn't get that car fixed.
17:57And as a result, Cycle got the invite.
18:00It is their 10th time Cycle Motorsports has run here at Le Mans since 1994.
18:05There's a look at that 62 Aston Martin, which is in and undergoing a stop right now, third in the class right now.
18:12And we talked a little bit about what was going on in the P2 division.
18:15It certainly has provided some of the more exciting moments that we've had.
18:19One of them, the number 30 Velter Racing Peugeot.
18:22Watch this.
18:23In the hands of Francois Houchard, just got it all wrong, Dorsey, and went for a wild ride.
18:28Watch this one.
18:29Bang!
18:30And somehow, the whole bodywork and everything stayed together.
18:32That car's still running.
18:34Then, the number 37 Belmondo Courage Ford had a right rear tire explode.
18:39And bodywork off.
18:40Barriers.
18:41More bodywork.
18:42And that car's not still running.
18:43No, debris everywhere.
18:45And then, at the end of it, it had a bit of a fire.
18:48And you can see Marshalls and Driver getting out of the way.
18:50Then, the number 27, the Miracle Motorsports entry from the United States having a great run there.
18:56Second in class.
18:57Eleventh overall.
18:58The class leader right now.
18:59The number 25, Ray Malek Limited entry.
19:01Sixth overall.
19:03So, a superb run by that team.
19:05And again, I think a great story for the Miracle Motorsports entry in the hands of Ian James, Lally, and Macaluso.
19:12Just the fact that they admitted we don't have the speed.
19:15We're just going to keep running.
19:17And they came up with a program with great success.
19:19Meanwhile, Andrew Marriott, big problems, it looks like, with a 62.
19:24Yes, indeed, Greg.
19:24The car came down the pit lane with smoke billowing from the right front.
19:30It appears the front suspension has collapsed.
19:32They're just changing the spring damper unit.
19:35New spring damper unit going in right now.
19:37So, I haven't seen the old one come out yet to see what happened to it.
19:41But, obviously, a problem here.
19:43They have not put the car back into the garage.
19:46They've got just the four people waiting here.
19:49And, unfortunately, our cameras just managed to poke one of the mechanics.
19:52I wasn't very pleased about that.
19:53I don't blame him, really.
19:54But, you know, it's pretty hectic down here.
19:57They're going to have this fixed within maybe a couple of minutes.
20:00This is the sort of thing you'd see a lot in Raleigh WRC-type events,
20:04changing struts very quickly like this.
20:06It seems to be all designed pretty well.
20:08So, it is a quick fix.
20:10So, the hood's gone back on the car.
20:13They are having a little problem just by taking this spring damper unit.
20:18But, I think they'll have this car running again in two or three minutes.
20:21So, it should hang on to its third place.
20:24But, a bit of drama here for the team moderner Aston Martin.
20:28Well, Andrew, yeah, the margin that it has right now is about...
20:33It was over a lap.
20:34Now, it's down to about a minute 55, obviously, with the stop.
20:37So, we're going to have to see how that plays out.
20:38Certainly, they'll still be right in the hunt.
20:40The problem is, is that that 007 Aston Martin, one of the pro-drive cars,
20:44certainly Dorsey, apparently...
20:46Look at fast times and best times and current fast times, that 62 just doesn't have the speed.
20:53No, it doesn't have the speed on the racetrack, that's for sure.
20:56As we take a good look all the way around the racetrack now, racetrack, now that the sun's up, looks a lot better last night.
21:01Pretty scary looking out there.
21:03Oh, boy, I'll tell you, and there is the number 62 as they continue to work on that car down at pit lane,
21:08grabbing behind the wheel.
21:09And this is going to be a long one, and they are still working on it right now.
21:13So, we're going to step away for just a moment here from the Circuit de la Sarthe.
21:16We will be right back to the 74th running of the Michelin, 24 Hours of Le Mans.
21:21Welcome back to the Circuit de la Sarthe for the Michelin, 24 Hours of Le Mans.
21:32And if you've been a frequent viewer of our coverage, you'll notice that the pit-out area and the village,
21:38which is what we're showing you right here, has been really drastically redone since last year.
21:44And it has been a big change.
21:46Well, there is an interesting story that has evolved out of that,
21:49because some 62 years earlier, during World War II,
21:53Le Mans was actually captured by the U.S. 5th Armored Division on August 8th, 1944,
22:00following their breakout from the Normandy beaches.
22:04When they were doing the excavation here, Dorsey, they discovered something.
22:08It was a huge surprise.
22:10Yeah, it's not a robin's egg either.
22:11That is an unexploded bomb from World War II.
22:15I wonder where I left that.
22:16As a matter of fact, spectators attending the 1949 Le Mans were barred from certain vantage points
22:22because of landmines left by the Germans during World War II.
22:25But that was a new one.
22:26And the irony is that bomb was dropped by a Royal Air Force plane,
22:30even though it's a U.S.-made bomb,
22:32that was launched from an airfield in Britain that is now a racetrack.
22:35So, I mean, there's just a real bizarre little synergy going on right there.
22:39But, boy, what a moment for the crews that were doing the excavating to come across that.
22:43Absolutely. And, of course, I read an article where they said they neutralized that bomb,
22:47which usually means they blew her up.
22:49So, somehow, yeah.
22:50But, I mean, man, what a moment and very dangerous indeed.
22:53But, obviously, there's going to forever probably be those type of scars
22:59from those horrible wars earlier here on the continent.
23:04Meanwhile, let's check in, Andrew Marriott, more information on what's going on with the number 62 Aston Martin.
23:09What's going on with the 62 Aston Martin is it's back on the racetrack.
23:13They have changed that right front damper.
23:16The top of the damper broke off.
23:18That's what the problem was.
23:19It's still in the hand of Sergio Rinland, who is engineering this car.
23:23Antonio Garcia was at the wheel, not David Brabham.
23:26And what is the connection between Sergio Rinland, the engineer here, and David Brabham?
23:31Well, actually, David Brabham is, of course, part of the famous Brabham family.
23:36Sergio Rinland used to be one of their Formula One designers.
23:39Let's go to Brian Till.
23:42Andrew, problems for the Spiker.
23:45They've been having such a good run.
23:4686 now sits in the garage.
23:49They're going to take an opportunity to do pad and rotor change on this car,
23:52but that is not what it is.
23:53Put it in the garage.
23:55Something in the engine compartment is doing,
23:58but what I can tell you is that the 85 car, the sister car,
24:01which was dropped out of competition earlier and sits in the garage next to it,
24:05they're taking parts out of the engine compartment off of the 85
24:08and replacing them in the 86 car.
24:11So something back in the back.
24:12I can't tell whether it's electronics or what,
24:15but it's the one great thing about having a sister car.
24:18There's always a parts car to work off of.
24:20They had a five-lap lead over the next car in the GT2 class.
24:25This is a long and costly repair here.
24:27Hopefully they can get this Spiker back flying, guys.
24:30That's really, that really is a shame, Dorsey.
24:33I mean, that car had been so good.
24:35Obviously the problem for the 85,
24:36but that 86 had been just ticking along beautifully
24:39and showing some great pace.
24:41Yeah, it looks like the Audi boys have found eight miles of racetrack
24:45and they found the same place to run with one another.
24:47I think that's the other one up ahead of it.
24:49That is, that's the seven in the hands of Christensen up front.
24:52Biela, that's the red roll hoops is the clue,
24:55is the H car.
24:56With Biela, the yellow roll hoops are Christensen.
24:59It's nice to have friends around you
25:00when you're just cruising through the countryside at 200 miles an hour.
25:03Especially coming up on traffic.
25:11Right now, the current situation, by the way,
25:14in the P1 and overall category is the number eight of Frank Biela.
25:17We're talking about is leading the number 17 Pascarolo Sport Judd,
25:22now in the hands of the very fast Frank Montagny,
25:25by about three laps,
25:26and then another six laps adrift is Christensen
25:28because of all the problems that they experienced.
25:31And fourth overall is the first of the GT1 cars,
25:34the Aston Martin a few laps back.
25:35But the, I mean, the Biela car really has,
25:39anything that's happened has been extremely minor
25:42and it has just been cruising right along.
25:43And even a six-lap lead,
25:45which seems like a lot on an eight-mile circuit,
25:47is nothing if you have to replace a gearbox
25:49and or you saw what happened
25:51when a tire exploded in the middle of last night
25:53and completely just threw the car into the wall.
25:56Anything can happen.
25:57We have a long way to go.
25:59Seven hours, 47 minutes before this is over.
26:01You can't even start thinking.
26:03If you're a six-lap leading driver,
26:05you can't even start thinking yet about what might.
26:08Well, and you had pointed out that
26:10what they had been talking about,
26:12the Audi team, Audi Sport Team Yost,
26:15that they were going to run fast
26:17because of that very reason
26:19is that if something happened,
26:20they wanted to have a margin built up.
26:21Yeah, they said that coming into the show
26:23that they didn't think this would go trouble-free.
26:26They were going to run as hard as they could
26:27and get a cushion to fix whatever might break.
26:31All right, so as we watch Frank Biela
26:33work his way around the track,
26:34we're going to step away.
26:35By the way, at the end of the 14th hour,
26:37we now have 12 official abandonments here,
26:40the last two being the 90 Peterson White Lightning entry
26:42and the 40 Racing for Holland Dome.
26:47Speeds coverage of the Michelin 24 Hours of Le Mans
26:50is presented by Michelin,
26:53a better way forward.
26:55By the all-new 2007 Lexus ES350,
26:58the car that asks,
26:59is it possible to engineer desire?
27:02And by Progressive Direct,
27:03call 1-800-PROGRESSIVE
27:05or visit Progressive.com
27:07for a free quote.
27:12And we are back once again live
27:14here at the Michelin,
27:15Fancador Dumont.
27:17And we are going to show you right now
27:19as we have about nine hours
27:20and, well, call it seven or eight minutes remaining.
27:23Here are the leaderboards right now.
27:25And as you can see,
27:25it is Audi,
27:27Pescarolo and Audi.
27:28That is the story in P1 and overall.
27:30Then, I think a remarkable story in and of itself
27:33already at this early stage of the race,
27:35relatively speaking.
27:36It is the GT1 battle for the lead in that class,
27:39fourth and fifth overall
27:41in the hands of the Aston Martin and the Corvette.
27:43Sixth overall is the leader in the P2 division,
27:46the number 25,
27:47Ray Malek Limited,
27:48RML,
27:49MG Lola AER.
27:50Andy Wallace,
27:51one of the drivers in that program,
27:52doing his stellar job.
27:53And you take a look,
27:55top 10 overall,
27:56you can see the number 63 Corvette
27:58there at the bottom.
27:59The copyware Corvette
28:00has worked its way back into the top 10.
28:02And if you were here
28:02and we talked to Ron Fellows,
28:03they're just chasing it
28:05is all they're doing right now.
28:06And if you look at 15th overall,
28:08you see the number 83 cycle Porsche 911
28:11in the hands of Nielsen,
28:13Young, Farnbacher,
28:14and Pierre Arette,
28:15who, of course,
28:16we have watched race in the United States
28:17a number of times.
28:18They are leading in the GT2 category.
28:21And speaking of GT2,
28:22the number 86 entry
28:24that we show in second
28:25is struggling right now.
28:29Check in with Brian Till
28:31with an update on the number 8 Audi,
28:32our overall leader.
28:33Brian?
28:34Greg, big drama down here
28:36at the Audi camp.
28:37Marco Werner just took over
28:39from Fank Bela.
28:40Werner wants his second 24-hour win.
28:43But we fired up the car
28:44and pulled away from the stop.
28:45He only got to right at the Marshall
28:47at pit out.
28:48Stopped.
28:49Shut the engine down.
28:50Now they pulled him back
28:51for another nose.
28:52I don't understand this.
28:54I don't understand
28:54how he could have felt
28:55anything on that nose
28:56just in leaving here.
28:57I don't see anything wrong with it
28:59unless it's a decision
29:00that the team made
29:01or perhaps maybe
29:02the headlights were not working.
29:04And that is why
29:04the official would not
29:05let him on the track.
29:06And at any rate,
29:07a new nose.
29:08We'll see if we can get
29:09headlights on this one
29:10when this engine fires up
29:11and see if Marco Werner
29:12can take this very powerful
29:14Audi R10 back on track.
29:16Well, Brian,
29:16isn't that a new rule this year?
29:18For the first time,
29:19the headlights have to be on
29:20all 24 hours.
29:21So maybe that was it.
29:22That's exactly what
29:23I was about to say.
29:24All the cars this year
29:25have to run
29:26even during the daylight hours
29:27with headlights on.
29:29So if he fired the car off
29:30and the headlights
29:31did not come up
29:32like they should have,
29:33they would have stopped him
29:34right there.
29:34And I think that's
29:35exactly what happened.
29:38Well, obviously,
29:39that with two and a half,
29:40better part of three laps
29:41to play with,
29:42that was a good call
29:43to take care of it right now.
29:44And as we are coming up
29:46on the end of our coverage here,
29:48we'll be joining Radio Le Mans
29:49for a little bit of coverage
29:50in just a moment.
29:51We wanted to check in
29:52with our pit reporters
29:52and get some of their thoughts
29:54here on what they have
29:55experienced thus far.
29:56Let's get down to Andrew Marriott.
29:58Well, what just happened
29:59up there at Audi
30:00shows that this is far
30:01from over yet
30:01with nine hours.
30:02But the car is back on track.
30:04I want to give you
30:04a quick thought.
30:05Could this be
30:06the longest, fastest
30:08Le Mans ever?
30:101972 is the record.
30:12They've been trying to beat.
30:13They got quite close last year.
30:14We need to get
30:15the record foot out
30:16because I think they could
30:17go the greatest distances
30:18of any 24-hour race ever.
30:22I think that's
30:22entirely possible.
30:24And one of the things
30:24that we've seen
30:25over the course of the years,
30:26everybody thought
30:27that great average speed,
30:29Dorsey,
30:29that was run
30:30by the Porsche 917
30:31many, many years ago
30:32on the track
30:33without the chicanes
30:34with everything else
30:35was going to stand forever.
30:36And they've been getting
30:37closer and closer
30:38to that mark as well.
30:40We talk about all the time
30:41whether it be lucky
30:42than good.
30:43Well, what had happened
30:44just there with Audi
30:45if they weren't
30:46at the pit-out end?
30:47What if they were down
30:48at Pescarello's end
30:49and the headlights
30:49didn't come on?
30:50They would have to go
30:51all the way back.
30:52They didn't have to.
30:53Audi is getting lucky.
30:56Without a doubt,
30:57we want to remind you
30:57coming up next
30:58will be three hours
30:59of race coverage
31:00with Radio Le Mans
31:01providing the audio.
31:03And we're sure
31:03you're going to enjoy that.
31:04We will be back
31:05to take you
31:06through the rest of the event
31:07at 5 a.m. Eastern time.
31:09So make sure
31:10and join us then.
31:10But we suggest
31:11you stay and enjoy
31:12the great fun coverage
31:13from Radio Le Mans.
31:15We will be back.
31:17And we hope
31:17you will join us
31:18and stay with us
31:19right through the finish.
31:20Thank you so much
31:21for being a part
31:22of the 74th running
31:23of the Michelin
31:24Vankaruduma.
31:25We hope you've enjoyed
31:26it thus far.
31:27And it's going to be
31:28getting more and more
31:29interesting as we close
31:30in on the final.
31:31So do stay with us
31:32right through to the end.
31:33Well, good morning, everybody.
31:49Welcome along.
31:50It's just after
31:508 o'clock
31:51here in France.
31:53Welcome to Radio Le Mans
31:54and Speed's
31:55overnight coverage.
31:56Tom Christensen
31:57out again
31:58after a very quick
32:00pit stop.
32:01And his teammate
32:02Mark O'Verno
32:03in the number 8 car
32:04continues to lead
32:04and has just got
32:05the hammer down
32:06in the first section
32:07of the track.
32:08Joe Bradley
32:09is down at Audi
32:10and can update us
32:11on Tom Christensen's
32:12pit stop.
32:13Joe?
32:13We've just seen
32:14another clockwork
32:15pit stop
32:15from the Yoast Audi
32:16team.
32:17The number 7 Audi
32:18came in.
32:18Tom Christensen
32:19stayed at the
32:20wheel of the car.
32:22A very tired-looking
32:23Alan McNish
32:24observed the pit stop
32:27from just in front
32:28of the car
32:29taking everything in.
32:30Alan obviously
32:30just getting back
32:32from his rest period.
32:34Just to bring you
32:34up to date
32:35further down the pit lane,
32:36the number 87
32:37GT2 Ferrari,
32:39the wheel is now
32:41off and that car
32:41is being readied
32:42and will rejoin
32:43the race very soon.
32:44Now we've just
32:45seen pictures there
32:46of Christensen
32:46slowing considerably
32:48and being passed
32:49by a Lamborghini.
32:50Now I know it's
32:51part of the same
32:52group but that's
32:53not right so we
32:54need to keep a
32:55look out for the
32:57number 7 car.
32:58You're listening to
32:58Radio Le Monde
32:59on 91.2 FM
33:00brought to you
33:01in association
33:02with Evo magazine
33:03race tune for 2006.
33:05I'm John Hindorff
33:06alongside me
33:06in our little
33:07glass house
33:08on the top
33:09of the Tribune
33:11overlooking the pit lane
33:12is Paul Trustwell
33:13and assistant editor
33:14of Daily Sports Car
33:15magazine
33:16Graham Goodwin
33:17DailySportsCar.com
33:18or rather should I say
33:19is Graham Goodwin
33:20the voice that you've
33:21just heard
33:22in the pit lane
33:24is Joe Bradley
33:25and also Graham Tyler.
33:30So those are the voices
33:31you'll hear within the
33:32next three hours here
33:33on Speed and Radio
33:34Le Monde together.
33:35Let's bring Paul Trustwell
33:36in right now.
33:37Paul?
33:37Yeah just to say that
33:39that pit stop that we
33:40just saw from Marco
33:41Werner when he got in
33:43the car and was stopped
33:43at the end of the pit
33:44lane for the lights
33:45to be corrected.
33:46I reckon that cost him
33:47three minutes.
33:48Now three minutes is
33:50not quite a lap
33:51and he had an advantage
33:52which was just over
33:53two laps so we're going
33:55to need to monitor
33:55that gap because we
33:57heard from Frank Bieler
33:58that that car is being
33:59driven absolutely flat out
34:01and I can promise you
34:02that so is Frank Montagny
34:03in the number 17
34:04Pescarolo.
34:05He's just dipped
34:06into the 336s
34:08he's now at the 337s
34:09the laps going up and down
34:11as he hits the traffic
34:12it's a real battle
34:13on at the moment John.
34:15Yes and back down
34:16into the pit lane
34:17at the other end
34:17Graham Tyler.
34:18Graham?
34:19Thank you John.
34:20Yo just had a stop
34:21for the number 81
34:22Panos
34:23Esperanti
34:23this the LNT
34:24automotive car
34:26the works car
34:27the Multimatic
34:28entered car
34:29number 77
34:30unfortunately
34:31had to withdraw
34:33well was forced
34:34to withdraw
34:34earlier on
34:35in the race
34:36when it had a
34:37fuel pickup problem
34:38out on the circuit
34:39and Gunnar Jeanette
34:40was unable to
34:41slosh any fuel
34:43from the main tank
34:44back into the
34:45back into the reserve
34:46tank to get it home
34:47so stranded out
34:48on circuit.
34:48No such problem
34:49to the LNT car
34:50going strongly
34:51Lawrence Tomlinson
34:52at the wheel
34:52now Tom Christensen
34:54has struggled
34:54back around
34:55to the pit lane
34:56Alan McNish
34:56is being readied
34:57down there
34:59if you're just

35:12Joe Bradley
35:13is camping
35:14down at Yoast
35:15the Scotsman
35:16getting ready
35:16for a very slow
35:18Tom Christensen
35:19coming into the pit
35:20lane from third
35:20position
35:21this car's already
35:22had some injector
35:23problems
35:24earlier on in the
35:25race
35:25had some changed
35:26and it's barely
35:27crawling down
35:28in fact I think
35:29he's cut the engine
35:30Joe as he comes
35:30to you
35:31yes he has indeed
35:32and just a few
35:34seconds ago
35:35I witnessed this
35:35car being
35:36serviced by
35:39replenishable fuel
35:41it had oil
35:42everything seemed
35:44to be clockwork
35:44Tom took it back
35:45out on track
35:45and now it's
35:46coming back in
35:47it's being put
35:47onto its trolleys
35:48and it's now
35:49being wheeled
35:51back into
35:51the pit garage
35:52a driver change
35:53is going on
35:54while they're doing
35:55that Tom
35:55and Alan McNish
35:57Tom Christensen
35:57and Alan McNish
35:58standing on top
35:59of the car
36:00Tom Christensen
36:00now putting
36:01Alan McNish
36:02into his
36:05seating position
36:06and strapping
36:06him in
36:07it looks to me
36:08as though
36:09it is definitely
36:10an engine problem
36:11with this car
36:12the rear body
36:13work has come off
36:13and there is
36:14hurried work
36:16going on
36:17we've got
36:20Reinhold Joost
36:21walking across
36:22from the pit wall
36:23so Reinhold Joost
36:25team principal
36:25is concerned
36:27as to what
36:28exactly the problem
36:29is
36:29now there's a
36:29piece of equipment
36:30on
36:32I think it's a turbo
36:33it's a turbocharger
36:34there is a turbo
36:35problem on this car
36:36a brand new
36:37turbocharger
36:38is being
36:38put on the
36:39side part of the car
36:40they're pouring
36:41cold water
36:42onto the errant
36:43turbocharger
36:44in an effort
36:45to cool it down
36:45to at least
36:46allow people
36:47to actually
36:48take the turbo
36:49off
36:50so
36:51a lot of work
36:52this car
36:52has really had
36:53the brunt
36:53of Audi's problems
36:54it's uh
36:55just while you're there
36:56excuse me
36:57we've got the GT1
36:58leader in
36:59Henri Pescarolo
37:01very invested
37:02spectator
37:03because of course
37:04his car is the one
37:05directly ahead
37:06of Montagne
37:07and he's also
37:08pre
37:09I suppose
37:09waiting for
37:10some problem
37:10to befall
37:11the number 8
37:12Audi
37:13which er
37:14is still leading
37:15Graeme Tyler
37:16is watching
37:17the GT1 leader
37:18and there's more drama
37:19Graeme as the Aston's
37:20pushed back
37:20into its pit box
37:21the GT1 leader
37:23not pushed into
37:24its pit box
37:25he's been
37:26and gone
37:26Stefan Sarazan
37:28was who brought
37:29the car in
37:29and handed over
37:30to Stefan Ortele
37:32so all well there
37:33if there's another
37:34Aston being pushed
37:35into the pit
37:35then I need to go
37:36and find which one
37:37it is
37:37it's the 009 car
37:38fine
37:38we'll go and find
37:40that one
37:40the 009 car
37:41is definitely
37:43not in its pit
37:43I can promise you
37:44that now
37:45because I'm standing
37:46outside that pit
37:47the number 63
37:48Corvette
37:49is expected
37:50as is the
37:51Zaytac Motorsports
37:53car
37:53the Danish driven
37:54prototype
37:56which is in the
37:56next pit
37:57so that's going
37:58to make life
37:59interesting
37:59as the two
38:00will attempt
38:01to come down
38:02pit lane
38:02close together
38:03indeed
38:03they come down
38:04nose and tail
38:05and it's the
38:06Zaytac
38:07which looks to be
38:08ahead
38:08of the Corvette
38:10so that's going
38:12to be a very
38:12tight squeeze
38:13when the
38:14number 2 car
38:15gets in
38:16in fact
38:16the Corvette
38:18being allowed
38:19to pass
38:20by the
38:21really
38:22pent up
38:22driving
38:23by the guy
38:24in the
38:24number 2
38:24and I'm
38:26wondering if that
38:26might have been
38:27no it's not
38:28John Nielsen
38:28it's
38:29Philip Anderson
38:30who was in
38:31that car
38:32so good
38:32good work
38:33for him
38:33and we'll get
38:34Caspar Elgar
38:36jumping in
38:37as meanwhile
38:38the number 63
38:39Corvette work
38:41can now proceed
38:42and does so
38:43the fuel
38:44going in
38:44no driver
38:46change evidence
38:47and it's
38:48Johnny O'Connell
38:49at the wheel
38:50the man from
38:50Flowery Branch
38:51Georgia
38:51that fuel
38:53is now
38:53completed
38:54up goes
38:54the car
38:55and we've
38:56got the
38:57we've got
38:57the
38:58we've got
38:59wheels going
39:00on front
39:00and rear
39:01same job
39:02it's been
39:02done on
39:03the prototype
39:03right behind
39:04them
39:04and it's
39:05going to be
39:05the Corvette
39:06that gets
39:06it
39:07you can hear
39:08that for
39:08yourselves
39:09and the
39:09Zytek will
39:10follow
39:10they're just
39:11doing the
39:11last rear
39:12wheel
39:12and there's
39:13trouble getting
39:14it lined
39:14up
39:15there it
39:15goes
39:15hammer jacks
39:16on
39:16air jacks
39:18down
39:18press the
39:19start button
39:20needs a
39:22little bit
39:23of
39:23adjustment
39:25on the
39:25mirrors
39:25and away
39:26he goes
39:26thank you
39:27Graham
39:28Graham Tyler
39:29down there
39:29in the pit
39:30lane
39:30you're listening
39:31to Radio
39:31Le Mans

39:32Channel
39:33together
39:33good Speed
39:34TV together
39:35just after
39:36seven minutes
39:37eight minutes
39:38past eight
39:38on a French
39:39morning with
39:39the sun
39:40coming up
39:40over the
39:41top of
39:41the
39:41grandstand
39:43the pit
39:43lane still
39:44for the
39:44moment
39:44and nicely
39:45so for our
39:46pit lane
39:46crew
39:47bathed in
39:48shadow
39:49rather than
39:49sunshine
39:50because it
39:50does get
39:50very hot
39:51down there
39:51and in
39:52the Audi
39:53pit
39:53we'll go
39:53back to
39:54Joe Bradley
39:54in a second
39:55as that
39:56car is still
39:56being worked
39:57on
39:5791.2
39:59FM
39:59this is
40:00Virgil
40:00Lamont
40:00here's a
40:00quick word
40:01from Paul
40:01Trustwell
40:02just to say
40:03that Marco
40:03Werner
40:03has really
40:04got the hammer
40:04down now
40:05with the
40:05number eight
40:06Audi
40:06a 332.856
40:08on his last
40:09lap
40:09that's just
40:10two tenths
40:11of a second
40:11slower than
40:12his best
40:13altogether
40:13so Marco
40:14going as
40:15quickly as
40:15that Audi
40:16will possibly
40:16take him
40:17well the
40:18number seven
40:18Audi
40:19is static
40:20while the
40:20number eight
40:21floods
40:22round at
40:22an incredible
40:23pace
40:23the number
40:24seven
40:24Audi
40:24is still
40:24static
40:25in the
40:25pits
40:25this
40:26turbocharger
40:26change
40:27is taking
40:28a little
40:28bit time
40:29and it
40:30doesn't matter
40:31how efficient
40:31the
40:32Oost team
40:32is
40:33this is the
40:34sort of job
40:34which is a
40:35little bit
40:36tricky
40:36the extremely
40:38hot
40:39a thousand
40:39degree
40:39temperatures
40:41of what a
40:42turbocharger
40:42can reach
40:43is now
40:44having to be
40:44manhandled
40:45off
40:45from the
40:47engine bay
40:47and replaced
40:48with a new
40:48unit
40:49Alan McNish
40:50sits very
40:51patiently in
40:52the car
40:52he's taking
40:53on a little
40:53bit more
40:53fluid while
40:54he's having
40:54to wait
40:55Tom Christensen
40:56is hanging
40:57around to see
40:58how the job
40:58is proceeding
40:59and hopefully
41:00we may even
41:00get a chance
41:01to talk to
41:01Tom
41:01in a moment
41:03or two
41:03let's just
41:04see if I
41:04can step
41:05forward and
41:05talk to
41:06Tom
41:06Tom
41:08Tom
41:14was in
41:14the car
41:15when the
41:15problem
41:15occurred
41:16Tom
41:17I take
41:18it's a
41:18turbocharger
41:18that filled
41:19yeah
41:20they're
41:20changing
41:21just
41:22sudden
41:22loss
41:23of
41:23power
41:23three
41:24corners
41:24after
41:24the
41:25pit
41:25stop
41:25and
41:25they
41:27very
41:27fast
41:28found out
41:29what it
41:29was
41:29so
41:29they're
41:29changing
41:30the
41:30turbo
41:30charger
41:30up until
41:31the
41:31pit
41:31stop
41:31Tom
41:32no
41:32problems
41:32whatsoever
41:33what

41:34you
41:34mean
41:34in
41:34the
41:34race
41:35or
41:35what
41:35no
41:35I
41:35mean
41:36with
41:36the
41:36turbo
41:37charger
41:37there
41:37was
41:37no
41:37like
41:38indication
41:38that
41:38the
41:38turbo
41:39charger
41:39was
41:39failing
41:39up
41:40to
41:40that
41:40pit
41:40stop
41:40no
41:41as I
41:42said
41:42it
41:42just
41:42failed
41:43after
41:43three
41:43corners
41:43after
41:44that
41:44pit
41:44stop
41:44suddenly
41:45yeah
41:45prior to
41:46that
41:46great pace
41:47from the
41:47car
41:47yeah
41:49apart from
41:49that
41:49the car
41:50has been
41:50running
41:51very very
41:51good
41:51between
41:52the
41:52issues
41:53we have
41:54had
41:54and
41:55obviously
41:55you don't
41:55win
41:56Le Mans
41:56when you
41:56park the
41:57car
41:57for the
41:57night
41:57do
41:58you
41:58no
41:58exactly
41:59and
41:59if
42:00anyone
42:00knows
42:00how to
42:01win
42:01Le Mans
42:01it's
42:07but it's
42:09not
42:09been

42:10so
42:10far
42:11but

42:18if
42:18he's
42:19got
42:19to
42:19be
42:19somewhere
42:19it's
42:20not
42:20beyond
42:20the
42:20bounds
42:20of
42:20possibility
42:21yeah
42:22I mean
42:22the
42:22thing
42:22with
42:23this
42:23car
42:23it's
42:24kind
