Australia’s biggest flower festival in full bloom in Canberra

Australia's biggest celebration of spring and the largest flower festival in the southern hemisphere is officially underway in the nation's capital. The annual Floriade festival is expected to draw huge crowds to Canberra over the next month.

00:00Flowers. For as far as the eye can see. One million blooms bursting with colour.

00:08I think it's gorgeous. So lovely and so lucky to have such a beautiful day.

00:13I like Floriad because it's lots of fun and you get to spend time with people you like and you get to see all the colourful flowers.

00:22As the gates at Canberra's Commonwealth Park swung open for the 38th year of Floriad, some arrive with bells on.

00:30Everyone comes to see what's going on and you'll bump into so many people that you know.

00:34It's a lot of fun and a gorgeous way to celebrate the spring.

00:3813 flower beds covering 8,000 square metres have been designed to fit in with this year's theme, science and nature.

00:45It's been an 18 month process to come up with the designs and hand plant each flower.

00:51Canberra's chilly winter came with both positives and negatives.

00:57The bulbs love the cold weather, the annuals not so much.

01:00So this year we've got a fantastic bulb display and the annuals will need a little bit of time to warm up.

01:06All eyes will be on the weather over the coming weeks.

01:08If there's more sunny and clear days like this in Canberra, organisers are expecting around half a million people to come through the gates.

01:16We're hoping that it's a big economic driver for the territory.

01:19So last year it was over $62 million in total economic impact.

01:24But most of all we hope people are having a great time and having a wonderful experience in Canberra.
