After a well-known social media influencer of Cuban descent made a video claiming that his son could not attend school in Trinidad as the child is a Venezuelan national, the Ministry of Education is reaffirming its policy on migrant children in schools. Rynessa Cutting has the details.

00:00Look my problem. She's my daughter. She's Trinidadian. She can go to school today, relax. No problem because she's born in this country. But he's my son. He's from Venezuela. He no can go to school today because he's a Venezuelan citizen. That's not good, boy. That's real cruel.
00:17While not directly addressing claims made by the social media influencer, Education Minister Dr. Michael Dowlath referenced the Ministry's policy. In compliance with the Immigration Regulations 2024, the policy applies to Venezuelan nationals under the age of 18, whose parents registered with the Ministry of National Security in 2019 and who continue to register annually under the migrant registration framework.
00:46The registration process for migrant children first began in June of 2024. The Ministry advises that parents are required to visit the Education District Office closest to their place of residence and complete the application form titled, Application for Admission of Migrants of the Republic of Venezuela into Schools.
01:07Parents are required to work with the original and one copy of the following documents, a minister's permit under the MRF and Migrant Registration Card, as parents without those documents cannot enroll their children into schools, a certified translation of birth certificate of the child, immunization record of the child, proof of address, and one passport-sized photo of the child.
01:35Parents are also advised that they must apply for a student permit exemption from the Ministry of National Security and that the application does not guarantee placement, which is dependent on availability of space at schools.
