00:00it's a crazy thing even just telling people you're in a rock band what do you do you know
00:04you meet people at a coffee shop or a bar or wherever i play in a rock band it just feels
00:08so surreal and funny yeah just like you play local like no i was in only if it's rip only
00:14if it's rip rest yeah yeah rock metal frog and everything in between welcome to this episode of
00:22talking rock with meltdown don't forget to follow the audio only talking rock podcast on all podcast
00:27platforms and now it's time for today's conversation here's meltdown hey guys once again meltdown here
00:34with uh jake and joe from the autumn kings are going to be in town uh doing a riff fest on september 20th
00:40thanks for coming back to the studio guys thank you for having us uh first jake we got to talk
00:43about that hat now show that hat off look at that thing let's go oh gee oh gee low classic uh a riff
00:50hat from the back in the day that's we've tried to figure out either late 80s or early 90s but tell
00:55us where you got that from yeah we got it from joe's brother justin owns a shop in windsor just
00:59across the pond here called bosons bosons and i don't know where where did he cop this they thrift
01:04and they go crazy i don't even know where he found that but they they go all over the place from
01:09windsor to toronto and they found it they're like you gotta bring this i'm like absolutely and what's
01:13the other place again uh bosons bosons yeah b-o-s-u-n-s all right so they got more cool swag
01:19like that a ton of stuff like that yeah so jay's gonna wear that uh for riff fest i think
01:22yes you're wearing it it must happen i know you're not wearing you're not wearing hats you're not a
01:27hacker i don't wear hats so i will represent the og riff man that's crazy like 35 40 years riffs been
01:33just doing it killing it well actually 53 is it 53 now we gotta find that shirt that you said you
01:39have a similar logo yeah i do have that yeah i got it at home somewhere i gotta dig it out but
01:43yeah so sick that's great mike clark gave me that shirt with the uh and someone just said
01:47that's supposedly ted nugent yeah that makes sense the silhouette of ted so that's it interesting
01:53city madman yeah i'll have to ask him about that so so what's going on with you guys man everything
01:58we just finished a great two and a half week tour across the u.s with nonpoint yeah nonpoint yeah
02:02super cool dudes they took us under their wing and upon a burning body too very heavy band oh yeah yeah
02:08yeah now gearing up for the almighty riff fest coming up and then touring with hinder and hollywood
02:14undead doing a few headlines all across america so it's ramping up to be a pretty crazy fall and
02:19since i talked to you guys last you went over to europe correct yes we went to europe i think we
02:24talked the week before we left yeah that's great it was amazing it was amazing yeah it really was it
02:28was a different level there actually especially when you got to eastern europe i mean when we went to
02:32warsaw we had people cross the border from ukraine and belarus to see us play and um there's like a
02:38different they wear it on their sleeve rock and they do here in america too but it was visceral
02:43wouldn't you say it felt like a deep visceral 100 there were people that followed followed us
02:48throughout the whole tour from day one to the last show it was it was insane we'd never seen anything
02:52like that to be honest yeah there's a real aura like in their eyes the perception of when an american
02:57band comes to play europe it means a lot to them well they couldn't believe it they're like we've been
03:01waiting years for you guys to get here we're like oh my gosh really yeah yeah it's pretty insane so
03:06we're already counting down the days till we can get back to europe and play now i love go ahead i'm
03:11sorry go ahead i was gonna say no they love they love rock there the way that you know we love country
03:15and rap in the u.s and in canada the rock is still very much at the forefront for them well i think what
03:21happens here like i remember talking to zoltan from five finger and you know he grew up and they'd have
03:26to drive two or three hours to a rock show but they didn't come around very often so when they came
03:30around you went and saw them yes and here it's like you know if you miss them here you know pine knob they
03:34might play you come around yeah somewhere else right yes that's exactly and so you know but yeah
03:39the the rock fans are big over there in europe oh my god so big over there yeah so it's great so
03:43i mean on our hit list right now it's europe and america just non-stop yeah how long was that that
03:48was that tour that was a three week about a three week tour and a half yeah we did eight countries we
03:53went switzerland france wow czech republic austria poland germany seven cities in germany now did you take did you
04:00take your parents uh no my parents they met up they actually met up with us my dad was so stoked
04:05paris is his favorite place on earth you get my dad on a paris run he'll just tell you everything
04:09man i love paris uh well i've only seen the eiffel tower in vegas but i can just imagine paris is just
04:16like it very similar very similar it's insane yeah they followed us around and we've got just a great
04:21support system which helps make this crazy life a little bit more smooth and my brother met with us
04:26in czech republic and prog in prog yeah wow that hat yeah family crossing the seas yeah yeah it's
04:31that immigrant upbringing yeah what a great trip man it's awesome so cool oh 10 out of 10 and we
04:36ended up going to we went to south korea and japan and singapore along the way too yeah wow um in may
04:41and june we played for the u.s military awesome over there yeah and it was awesome just to play for
04:46the americans that are overseas just doing so much to keep us safe at home and they see things that
04:52you know we take for granted we don't even know about and um they don't have the day-to-day
04:57amenities that we have over here so for us to get to play for them over there it means so much to
05:01them too kind of like with the european fans exactly they love it and then we've gotten to see so much
05:05of the world this year too like singapore who gets to go to singapore yeah i know that's for sure it's
05:10it was crazy yeah so um so who did you play with uh for the uh for the military which is just you guys
05:15yeah it was headline oh we headlined everywhere yeah japan south korea did i miss any japan south korea and
05:20singapore that was it yeah so that's insane yeah got to fly overseas a lot of jet lag this year
05:25yeah yeah a lot of long flights a lot of long flights well i've said it before you get paid to
05:30travel you play for free oh right but you know what it i wouldn't trade it for the world like
05:37it's a crazy thing even just telling people you're in a rock band what do you do you know you meet
05:41people at a coffee shop or a bar or wherever i play in a rock band it just feels so surreal and funny
05:47yeah they're still like you play local i'm like no i was in only if it's only if it's riff rest
05:52yeah it's funny because i just met a guy the ordain he's like what do you do for a living and
05:56i've been on the radio for 35 years they find that really intriguing and he was an accountant so it's
06:00like he just wanted to talk about what i did yeah yeah right that's right and it sort of makes you
06:04feel uncomfortable because you know you're on radio and everyone hears meltdown but you just think of
06:08it as day-to-day that's what you do well it is interesting it is fun and i get to do things other
06:13people don't get to do so it's like you know i think people are interested in it it's fun it is
06:16what you make of it of course yeah yeah 100 and we love it and next year we're planning to put out
06:21the the new record yeah let's talk about that so so go ahead you open up the you open it up oh yeah
06:26yeah yeah absolutely man um so a couple of the singles have been out already sleep from dead
06:30hellbound and thanks for name dropping me by the way yeah yeah yeah headed for a meltdown
06:38anyway so i digress but no it's true shout out meltdown yeah i had to think about that
06:43yeah yeah yeah and um and so yeah the record's gonna be out uh next year i want to tease the
06:49name so badly i don't know if we're in a position we'll come back when we're allowed okay yeah we'll
06:53come back when we're allowed can you say when uh it's gonna be early early 2026 most likely yeah
06:59yeah probably february march at some point it's done in the can done in the can done in the can
07:04are you guys playing anything off it that or not yet we'll be playing the singles that are already
07:08out so we're playing sleep hellbound yeah snake charmer uh and snake charmer yeah so we're playing
07:13those three um and hellbound is obviously back at radio doing a lot of work right now yeah there'll
07:19probably be one more radio single before the record comes out and how many songs are on the record
07:23uh it'll be 11 songs on the record okay full-blown record full-blown record yeah full-blown record of
07:28original stuff and already the impatient musician in us is like okay let's get started on the next
07:34record we haven't written enough yet it's just it's never ending in the brain you know it's funny
07:39once you get to playing live on a record that's out let's say you play the day the record comes out
07:45your mind is like already a year graduated from that because you've had those ideas incubating for so
07:51long you've been marinating kind of making them come to life you're already focused on what's coming
07:56next but obviously we have the mental discipline to you know understand that fans haven't heard
08:01those songs take the time even if it's two three years you know shinedown when they do world tours
08:06it's like three years on the same music right so maybe to them it feels like they've been doing it
08:11for so long but to all these people they're playing for it's the first time they get to experience it
08:15live at least so yeah that's great it's never ending yeah you say you got 11 songs so how many
08:20how many you know maybe fell through the cracks or do you have kind of on the back burner gosh
08:25well for the this record quite a few yeah it's really interesting because different artists have
08:31different ways of approaching building a record and some will write 100 songs and then whittle it
08:36down to 25 and then whittle it down again to their best 10 or 15 we used to be like that but you
08:42correct me if you see it differently i think lately it's been we sort of know right away if we know
08:47an idea is gonna work so we don't try to pursue a fully written song and then gather 100 fully
08:52written songs and whittle it down we like to nip it in the bud right then and there if is this going
08:57to turn into something and if it's not we just ditch it right away 100 agree save ourselves the
09:01risking getting emotionally attached to an idea that's not actually that great so we ended up
09:07writing i don't know maybe 25 30 songs for this record but we really got down to 11 you know some
09:12people try to make it look easy like i don't know where the inspiration comes from dude no i just
09:17can't be a liar your head on the wall it's the hardest thing writing a song that you're happy
09:21with yeah man yeah none just fell in our lap we're like oh my god full song yeah full song and it's
09:26written so it's it's a labor of love well where did you record these songs we did um i record a good
09:32part of it at home my home studio joe and i we build the ideas and then we work with our long-standing
09:37homeboy marty back actually in windsor slr studio which is pretty amazing in windsor i mean he'd probably be
09:43the only guy i would say that i would trust as a producer in windsor um but he is the the fact that
09:48you found a guy like that in windsor is crazy usually you find those guys in toronto or la or
09:53new york or nashville so we've actually our entire catalog of songs has been done with marty at slr
09:58studios for 10 years mixed mastered produced and i co-produced with marty and he's just an
10:04unbelievable guy unbelievable i was gonna say because uh jay ruston is from leamington jay ruston yeah jay
10:09ruston he does a lot of the rock records he does like all the steel panther records and he does
10:13like no sax and it's more they're more of the rocks of stone stone sour what still there he lives in
10:19leamington he's from leamington he actually went to school with uh mccarty no way dary mccarty yeah
10:24and it's funny because i've known jay for about eight years but i've never met him but i'll text him and
10:29i'll say hey dude give me a because i'll be interviewing a band he's worked with or something
10:32yeah and he's worked with a lot of bands mostly rock bands man what a small world anytime we hear
10:36about someone who's from like our neck yeah right it's like mind-blowing yeah jay ruston why i'm
10:41gonna look this guy up after yeah jay's done a lot of stuff in the uh in the rock world um what do
10:46you guys consider your your music or your genre what what do you what do you what do you call
10:50your band like like yeah like we will usually say the starting point we give everyone is lincoln park
10:55and fallout boy had a baby right which is currently where it's at but obviously that doesn't encapsulate
10:59the whole musical spectrum of what we like and listen to so i would say we're somewhere um
11:04on this equator between rock and we you know rock guys struggle to use the word pop but we have
11:10melodic memorable sort of poppy sensibilities yeah yeah those sorts of sensibilities but i would say
11:17lately we've actually leaned much more into our rock roots like this next record is heavy it's heavy
11:21it's the heaviest we've gone yeah so i would say we are a you know a stadium arena rock band is probably
11:27the best place to categorize us but we have tinges of metal like we will incorporate little bits of lamb of
11:33god and metallica on certain pieces of our riffs and then there's rap and then there's alternative
11:37and some of that those notes too so it's yeah a little all over the place you know the every
11:41every artist wants to believe that you can't categorize their music we want we want to feel
11:45special but for us i could say it's kind of hard yeah you know we're a rock band and we we try to
11:50borrow from everything but we're a rock band at the end of the day for sure when you see us live
11:54a fan is going to say that was a great rock concert okay unmistakably and of course you know september 20th
11:59like we were talking about with uh with uh riff fest and uh that's gonna be killer and you know
12:03i think since the last time i talked to you guys i interviewed paul from the tragically hip i don't
12:07think i talked to you guys before that no i don't think so yeah he was great so i mean you know uh you
12:12started talking about all your stuff but so what what about what canadian bands do you guys draw
12:17influence from since you are basically from windsor yeah go ahead joe three two one say it uh billy
12:22yeah yeah yeah billy talent's number one three days grace too three days they're coming back
12:29doing big things billy talent three days grace let me say it blasphemy nickelback yeah we do well
12:37three days grace of course is playing riff fest have you met those guys yeah uh i'm i met yeah this is
12:42crazy i shouldn't be saying this when i'm talking to the riff but i snuck an internship with 89x when
12:47they were years ago the windsor detroit station when i was like 17 and uh it was so bad i hustled
12:52my way into it gave them this whole sales pitch if i'd be the best employee i only did it because
12:58i'd get meet and greet with three days grace met them took the picture and quit right after
13:02so bad we have the picture we posted i have the picture yeah so we met them once before um haven't
13:08met adam yet though so really hoping we'll get the opportunity to do that yeah just like with the
13:12rest of canadians they're really hard to deal with super diva no i mean they're so canadian it's like
13:20adam leaves the band that comes back in they're like well we're gonna keep the other lead singer
13:24too it's like okay let's just right i mean seriously it's like sorry guys how canadian is that
13:28it's so accommodating yeah from like three hours from us where were they they're from they're from
13:32toronto yeah just north yeah yeah it's just awesome yeah billy talent for us is the big one um and
13:39i don't know they sort of cracked in america but i don't think they really right yeah the way
13:43nickelbacker three days grace did but ian desaw that guitarist i'd say probably my number one guitar
13:48influence been to vocals for me it's yeah they're a really special band you guys running the tea
13:53party guys yeah we run into jeff burroughs yeah i see jeff's i i i i we followed each other on his
13:59socials and i saw him at a concert and i just walked up to him i don't think he knew who i was i'm like
14:02hey i felt like oh my god he gave me that yeah that was the last time i saw him yeah he's you know
14:06what he's so involved locally with charities yeah he really is a good man he gives a lot back to his
14:13community and you know he definitely gave us good tips and advice in the beginning of starting our
14:17career he's actually from la salle but the exact town that i grew up in so really small world and
14:22they're a very unique band too we got to play with them uh at caesar's windsor about six years ago yeah
14:27yeah that's cool dudes and now but now you're here in royal oak right i'm here in royal oak michigan now
14:31yes sir yeah he just got married so tell me about that i did i just got married yes
14:35yeah thank you bro just came back yesterday from honeymoon we went to uh get some beach and ocean
14:41vibes on the other side of the country yeah it's awesome man you know i always tell people
14:45this kind of life is very strange and foreign especially if you're not from you know you have
14:51detroit rock city but it's not in this day and age like a music hub the way la or nashville or new
14:57york is and so i remember when i would go on dates with girls before i met my wife when you tell them
15:03you do music it's very hard for them to understand their instinct is to say oh that's great so what's
15:08your real job or what's your backup plan right they don't get it and delaney i mean she's a she was a
15:14d1 soccer athlete she's from wyoming actually of all places the place with more cows than humans
15:18that's right i love it she understands sacrifice and so when i explained to her what i did she completely
15:25understood and that's a very hard thing to find it's a very hard thing to find someone who supports
15:30you so i didn't go into a marriage uh lightly that was a decision i took seriously and i couldn't be
15:35happier with it well i told my wife we got married 25 years ago i ride harley davidson's and play hockey
15:40if you're good with that then we're gonna be fine there you go i got my harley in the garage and i'm
15:44playing hockey in the morning so maybe i'll go ride tonight i don't know i love it i love it and it
15:48works yeah you got yeah you gotta lay down the law right away that's my tip 100 100 joe you married
15:53i'm not married but i'm uh been with my girl for 10 years okay you gotta lay down the law
15:57tell her you ride harley davidson's and play hockey i say it very quietly but i say it
16:01in very canadian fashion yeah sorry but i say behind her back she doesn't hear me but i do say it
16:06i say it out loud somewhere that's good man well that's killer well thank you guys so much for coming
16:12in um the record's gonna drop sometime next year do you guys have uh any tour plans or is that kind
16:16of in the works it's something you can't say or yeah it's uh it's not announced yet but we're gonna be
16:21doing i'll say this we'll be doing a five week big us-wide tour oh awesome next spring yeah with a
16:27band that i think a lot of your fans might know i love uh i love when i talk to bands they can't say
16:31anything about them right dude i have us off camera yeah off camera otherwise i'm gonna hear it from
16:37kurt and jason our whole team why did you tell meltdown i mean we use his name in a song why can't
16:42we at least tease it it's so funny you can't imagine who did i talk to i talked to um uh uh johannes
16:48from uh avatar he's like oh the record's coming out on a very special day but i can't tell you
16:52what say now it's been released it's been revealed on halloween you know it's like oh okay sacred yeah
16:57but he couldn't tell me at the time you know and the whole thing the tease yeah exactly so so yeah you
17:03guys got some shows coming up here probably take a break around the holidays and yep 2026 gonna be
17:08big for the autumn kings 2026 gonna be big yeah it's gonna be a lot of touring it's crazy how long it
17:13takes to really in rock you see it with bands like skillet is one example that comes to mind or
17:17even shinedown when second chance came out it was 10 years of grinding before they really saw
17:22success and for us it feels like now we're just hitting that point where a lot of people are
17:27starting to know the band country ride and worldwide and momentum tours record deal you know radio support
17:34and radio love it it feels pretty surreal and it's so great to be back home talking with you right now
17:39on a station that we grew up listening to and copped a hat from a vintage shop from the late 80s
17:44that's proof that's wild that is killer man so well thank you guys once again for stopping down we'll
17:49see you here in uh in just a couple weeks at uh riff fest can hardly wait september yes it's gonna be
17:53great can't wait thank you brother
