00:00we've probably written three four hundred songs for this record and we're gonna pick 15 of them
00:04to me what has been really fun is that kind of addicting game in my head of like here's a good
00:09song can i make a better one and you just keep playing that game over and over and over again
00:13rock metal frog and everything in between welcome to this episode of talking rock with meltdown
00:21don't forget to follow the audio only talking rock podcast on all podcast platforms and now
00:26it's time for today's conversation here's meltdown usually we'll talk to people from columbus ohio
00:32on a daily basis but we'll we'll make an exception this time that's right dude we got across we got
00:36across the line every once in a while to conduct commerce dude that's right i think that i i drove
00:42through your hometown when i went down to a hocking hills over the summertime oh yeah dude what were
00:47you doing in hocking hills just chilling yeah it was uh the 25th anniversary and the wife never been
00:52there and she's not much of a hiker so i spent most of the time waiting for her
00:56there you go as i got to the top of wherever we were going have you been there oh yeah dude i mean
01:04that was like the spot growing up it's like 45 minutes away i think my my grandma had a cabin
01:10there so we were there every like summer hanging out vibing dude yeah i've never been there it was
01:16cool i even got a cool record from uh i'm a vinyl guy so i got a cool record from one of the
01:21antique stores there uh but we won't get into that let's talk about your record man i could talk
01:25about ohio and all that stuff all day long but uh so what's going on with the band man there's a lot
01:29of things happening for you guys for you man i'm just sitting playing runescape all day gaming
01:34getting door dash dude vape no i'm just kidding um i'm i uh yeah a lot of stuff man i we're going on
01:41tour with bad omens this fall and we've just finished up three straight weeks of writing music
01:47and i think we've got the record all the way nailed down so um as far as writing is concerned so we're
01:53going to go and record everything real nice and pretty like in the next two weeks i would say
02:00once we get back from uh our tour in october and then we're hopefully done with it at that point
02:07send it off to mixing and get her out next year yeah you seem like the kind of guy that likes to
02:12put out a lot of music uh and you don't like to waste time it's uh now there was about a year and
02:17a half or so between the last two records but early on in your career i was looking it's like
02:20you you were like uh like kiss back in the 70s like every six months or so is that kind of like
02:25your mo well i feel like at the time it was just kind of like uh there was no rules because i had no
02:32audience so it's just like i would write eight songs and be like well just put it out and upload it
02:38like that week you know and that was really fun to me and now i really actually enjoy being a lot
02:44more selective so you know we've probably written three four hundred songs for this record and we're
02:48going to pick 15 of them so um that's like to me what has been really fun is that kind of addicting
02:56game in my head of like here's the good song can i make a better one and you just keep playing
03:01that game over and over and over again it makes me a better writer but it also you know i think makes
03:06the record really special because it's truly like the most purified form of whatever you're making
03:11at the time now i remember talking to james hetfield one time and he called it the riff
03:15junkyard do you have a riff junkyard where you just kind of put stuff where you might not fit now
03:19but maybe later yeah absolutely yeah i call it the landfill actually i didn't know he used that term
03:25too i was like yeah we're gonna chuck this one in the landfill and every once in a while i troll
03:28through the landfill to see if i left any gems in there but most of the time i feel like we're all
03:33pretty good uh at like making sure we discard what needs to be discarded and i do have a couple
03:38sick riffs in the junkyard that i would like to put on a song so hopefully you know we write
03:44something where i can get those riffs in there yeah well it's resonating with some it's resonating
03:48with some of the rock fans out there you guys sold out a show here in uh royal oak uh a couple months
03:52ago what a show man such a cool venue too and detroit has always been so good to us obviously got that
04:00midwest connection so that's sweet and um genuinely like and i i say this truthfully
04:07the detroit shows and fans they're more rowdy than like most other places it is like every time we i
04:14see detroit on the list i'm like dude yes the show is gonna be sick like the we played detroit last year
04:21and my sound guy was like i was literally having trouble because i could not get the pa loud enough to
04:27be over the crowd and i was like well that's a great problem to have and shout out detroit for
04:31giving us that to deal with so where was that show at that was at oh man um was it downtown like
04:40st andrews or a shelter or something that's the one yeah yeah sick also yeah great funny of course uh
04:47eight mile you've seen that movie i'm sure yeah yeah that it's kind of like the the rap battles take
04:52place down below yeah yes where the green rooms are and everything yeah so that's really cool so
04:59you got a bunch of new music coming out and like you said you got this bad omens tour you're really
05:03hopping on some big tours got some big festivals coming up as well what kind of pressure does that
05:08put on you um honestly it's really interesting like i'm really glad that that bill murray has gotten a
05:16lot of reps without being in the spotlight um you know we've got to tour for like three three or four
05:23years uh before we started getting these really big opportunities i'm so grateful that i got to like
05:28learn a lot of lessons about how to perform and and especially even just the live band as well
05:34before we got put on these big stages but really like you know you look at the crowd and you're like
05:38that's different but what i'm doing on stage does not change and if i really just focus on like
05:44what i'm doing on stage it takes a lot of the pressure away and then at the same time like
05:49the thing i always tell myself is like dude you're doing this to have fun like you're not some god
05:54that like people need to witness the miracle of bill murray it's it's just like go out there have fun
06:00enjoy yourself because that's why you started making music in the first place and if you could
06:04really just focus on that a lot of the other stuff melts away and like you you go back to
06:10like i said you know what what made me get into playing music live in the first place which is
06:16is that it's fun and i think that when that when i'm in that headspace on stage it comes across and
06:22everyone else in the show is having fun like i'm not here to like have someone witness a musical
06:26miracle i'm here for people to just like enjoy themselves for 30 45 minutes when we go play a
06:31festival and that's really it like you know well we see enough musical miracles on your your videos
06:37that kevin hart bit it's funny because he did the same thing here in detroit but i don't think
06:45that was in detroit where you were that that sound bite you got from him do you remember where that
06:48was from uh that was like the daytona motor speedway okay because he had the coat and stuff on it seemed
06:55like it was in a cooler weather area but he gave a speech before the race happened and i saw it on
07:02instagram i was like i need to to do that and we had to pay nascar for the rights to it but it was
07:08worth it so oh so is nascar your favorite american motorsport dude i mean listen i'm i gotta be honest
07:16with you i like i'm not a huge american motorsport guy genuinely i was i mean i do like nascar and i
07:24like indycar but it's i'm not gonna sit here and lie and say that it's my favorite thing in the world
07:29i'm ohio state football through and through but um you know like my manager was like you know we
07:36could name the album something american motorsports because he was driving by this car dealership that
07:41said that and i was like well i think that's probably what we'll name it because it sounds sick
07:44and that's really all it is so but yeah shout out nascar dude obviously love love nascar as well so
07:50and thanks for letting us use the clip uh we were very i was like man i don't think this song is going
07:56to be nearly as cool if we don't have this sample in there so i'm super grateful for them you know
08:01have you heard from kevin james's people about using it or no i want him to come fucking sing
08:07that shit so so bad um you know and kevin james if you're out there please please uh hop on stage at
08:16a murray show it would mean the world to us yeah now i'm gonna ask a hack question which i'm sure
08:22you've been asked a million times but it's like uh with the band bill murray have you ever met him
08:25no i one of my goals is to have him do a music video so i'm hoping i get to meet him and have him
08:32like you know mouth the words to a song and we just film it and go from there but no i've never met
08:37him yet i hope to meet him soon though i mean but i mean you know another hack question why do you
08:42name the band bill murray i know you've been around for 10 years you probably answered some million
08:45times well i i named it that because i knew that i would have to to answer that question and i like
08:51i knew that uh like if people are going to ask me what the the name bill murray is for the rest of my
08:57life i want it to be at least something that they can get a little bit of joy out of where it's like
09:01what's the name of your band bill murray you know it's like an enjoyable interaction as opposed to
09:07whatever thing other thing it could be i'm like man i want it to be enjoyable for people to hear the
09:13band name for the first time so that was really kind of all the thought i put into it yeah all right
09:17last thing here for you because they're giving me the wrap-up sign uh but the uh i i've seen spinal
09:22tap twice this week have you seen it the new one but yes oh the new one no no is it any good yeah it's
09:30fun yeah anyways i was just curious if you'd seen it oh i i usually wait there's so much stuff that
09:36comes out i wait for like if enough recommendations bubble up then i'll go watch it but yeah i'm back on
09:43the reading books grind that's what i'm doing now dude i'm trying to get off the screens well that
09:48that makes one of us but um it says uh striving to obtain the most optimal levels of urethral
09:55riffage i think i've screwed that up but anyways uh but i appreciate your time man good luck to you
10:02with this uh bad omens tour we'll see you next time you're here in detroit we'll crank it up to 11
10:06that's right dude appreciate you so much man thank you have a great day dude
10:13you
