00:00:00So great overhead views of the circuit there and that's the downhill run from Dunlop through La Chapelle
00:00:06and down to Tertre Rouge, one of the most iconic of the corners at Le Mans.
00:00:10It's a double right-hander, it goes on forever and then Liz brings it on to this wonderful, wonderful straight with the poplar trees.
00:00:17Yeah, this bit of the Mulsanne straight is really special.
00:00:19I mean, this is the piece of history that every driver looks forward to being a part of
00:00:22and I remember the first time that I came out of Tertre Rouge and on to the Mulsanne
00:00:26and it was just an incredible experience because you can just feel the history in it,
00:00:30you're on the same track as so many amazing drivers and cars have been on,
00:00:33so it's a very, very special experience.
00:00:35Corvette Center finally making their first stops, they've actually gone a lap longer than the Astons,
00:00:40we're on lap 13, but Liz, we're still 47 minutes of the race gone.
00:00:44We've been used to seeing GT cars going the full hour.
00:00:47We've seen so many pit stops already so early on in this race, it's very interesting.
00:00:51I mean, yeah, we're 45, 50 minutes in, that's about right for a lot of GTs,
00:00:56but still, I mean, we've seen almost the entire grid pit already.
00:01:00Expired the GT2 cars, so this is definitely a lot quicker than we're used to seeing.
00:01:04This is the lead Corvette, of course, we're looking at, Jan Magnussen, he stays on board,
00:01:07just seeing if they're doing tyres, they're fueling at most, they haven't got any tyres out, Liz, so...
00:01:12007 Aston has just come into the pits as well.
00:01:14That's quite a few laps after the 009, I mean, I'm sure they've tried to plan that as best they could.
00:01:19Yeah, so out goes the Corvette.
00:01:27It's up the pit lane, on board there, with Mags, I believe.
00:01:35007, car still at, still sitting there at rest.
00:01:39That's in second place at the moment, Carl Wendlinger on it, you're not seeing it on the screen at the moment,
00:01:43but whistling it below us, out goes the 007, that's the second of the Golf Aston's.
00:01:47That'll just change, as we see, perhaps, there's Brabham out there, he's going on for another lap, though, Liz.
00:01:53Yes, he is, yeah, but he's already been in, so, actually...
00:01:56But, yeah, they've timed that really nicely, actually, they've made sure that they had, you know, the right amount of space,
00:02:01didn't have to back a car up, like we saw with the Corvettes earlier, but, um, 009 car, pushing hard.
00:02:06So, basically, we've finished up now with all the major LMP, 1MP2 runners have made stops,
00:02:12all the GT1 runners have stopped, but of the GT2s, only one car has stopped,
00:02:17and that's the Virgo motorsport car of Tim Mullan, I think he's just leaving the pits now,
00:02:21so, they've obviously decided to get that stopover, Tim stays on board, he, Tim Sugden,
00:02:27and, of course, Rob Bell, the defending Le Mans Series champion, on board that British-run Ferrari F430.
00:02:34Well, of course, the GT2 cars can go quite a bit longer in fuel than a lot of these bigger-engined,
00:02:39you know, more fuel-burning vehicles can go, so, you know, we would expect them to come in a bit later,
00:02:44but, still, I mean, the big story is how soon the LMP1 cars were pitting, half an hour into the race, very, very early.
00:02:50Nine laps for the first of the Peugeots, nine laps for the first of the Audi.
00:02:54And for how soon a lot of the petrol cars actually came in,
00:02:57it makes you wonder if maybe they weren't running that low on fuel, we'll have to see, sort of, where we are.
00:03:01So, there's the Astons going through, they've actually joined each other, running in formation, those two Astons,
00:03:06they're going to be behind the Corvettes still, but what we're not seeing at the moment,
00:03:09LMP2, huge battle still going on between Blake and Melon and Elgard,
00:03:13it's been going on for the last five laps, and there's only 0.8 of a second between them,
00:03:17and they maintain that gap through their pit stop cycle.
00:03:19Kurosawa in the pits, this is an exciting team here, brand new, new team to Le Mans,
00:03:26new car to Le Mans, new drivers, everything, very exciting experience for them.
00:03:31This is the university car, isn't it, Tokai University?
00:03:34So, this is a great car to watch, and we'd love to see them carry on and make it all,
00:03:39but it looks like they're being pushed into the garage, this is very unfortunate.
00:03:42More work than they can do in the pit lane.
00:03:44This was a big fight to take, really, to come to Le Mans.
00:03:47This car, as you watched our qualifying coverage, you'll remember,
00:03:51the team manager is Professor Yoshimasa Hayashi.
00:03:55Now, Dr Hayashi, he is the man who designed the Nissan engine that took Marc Blondeau to that fabulous pole position here in 1990 for Nissan.
00:04:05And Mark's never forgotten that, we've never forgotten that, and Dr Hayashi's decided, obviously, they'd like to try and do it again.
00:04:12The team is entirely crewed by students from Tokai University.
00:04:17The car itself was run at Fuji and Tsugo in the aborted Japanese Le Mans series of last year,
00:04:23but it's quite a famous car, this Courage, this was run, as we said, in Japan for a couple of seasons.
00:04:31So, it's well known in Japan, but it's a new engine, YGK,
00:04:34and Carlton has been absolutely fascinated by the fact that YGK are manufacturers of generators.
00:04:39Yeah, they do turbine engines, and we were wondering, what is under the hood?
00:04:45They've been very secretive about the whole thing.
00:04:47And what I do know is that, unfortunately for them, they had to start at the back of the grid.
00:04:52I'm not even sure why that's the case.
00:04:53Yeah, well, Carlton, they've just pushed the car into the garage.
00:04:56If you want to know what it is, it's a V8, 90-degree V8, all-aluminium.
00:05:00But it's not so strange, because one of the most iconic engines of Formula One in the 50s and 60s was Coventry Climax.
00:05:08Coventry Climax was a fire pump engine manufacturer.
00:05:11Well, there you have it.
00:05:12We've just recently seen the JMB Ferrari come in for its pit.
00:05:18Very, very tidy pit stop for them.
00:05:19Looked routine.
00:05:20They've gone back out.
00:05:21Obviously, that car had quite a big accident in qualifying, which they worked very hard to rebuild.
00:05:26And they've said they had a little bit of understeer this morning, but other than that, the car felt spot on.
00:05:30You want rebuilt?
00:05:31How about this front-end damage to the Lola MG?
00:05:35And would you ever get this in Formula One?
00:05:38Having that tighter look at all the settings, etc., on the suspension, tremendous.
00:05:43It's a big party out there, and we're through this big part of it.
00:05:47Mark, sorry.
00:05:47Yeah, sorry.
00:05:47I'm sorry to interrupt you, Captain.
00:05:49Liz, I'm just going to ask you, why would Tommy stay in the car?
00:05:51He's probably got an hour's rebuild ahead of him.
00:05:53Well, you know, I think the team likes to assess what's going on first.
00:05:56They probably just said, let us get in there and see what the story is, and then we'll decide.
00:05:59But a lot of times that's what will happen is, before you've sort of made all your decisions, you keep the driver in the car for a minute until you've sort of figured out the extent of the damage.
00:06:08My guess would be that car is going to take a while to fix.
00:06:10I mean, that was a big hit, a lot of damage.
00:06:13You know, it's going to have pushed itself pretty far in there.
00:06:15Want a bit of glamour?
00:06:16Well, we'll look at this.
00:06:17The golf cars, they're out there, and they're pacing beautifully.
00:06:21Round together, and they're three and four in class at the moment with the Corvettes of Magnuson and Gavin, the official factory Corvettes, leading this class.
00:06:30Get your cameras up.
00:06:31Here's your photo opportunity of those golf Astons.
00:06:33Now, after all the speed differentials, lap differentials in qualifying, all four of those cars, the two Corvettes and the two Astons, are all running 51s.
00:06:43Or they have been during the race at various times, so they're all on the same race pace.
00:06:47Well, Corvettes got a title to try and take back at Le Mans.
00:06:50Of course, last year, the Aston did win.
00:06:53Corvette has won for quite a few years, and I think they're definitely out here to prove something and say, hey, we're back to win.
00:06:57So, they're going to be holding on to those front positions as best as they can.
00:07:02Well, thanks to Wayne.
00:07:03He says, great to have Le Mans back on Eurosport.
00:07:06He's found a way of viewing it somewhere.
00:07:09Not quite sure where he's based, but he's...
00:07:11On the television.
00:07:12He's a happy voice.
00:07:12He says he's watching it on the old Astra satellite.
00:07:14It's a huge dish on the side of his, what I'm sure is a very, very pleasant residence.
00:07:20So, the rolling continues as far as the pit stops are concerned.
00:07:24And look at that 24 car, the Talamas machine.
00:07:28Red and gold on that guide.
00:07:30It just came out as white.
00:07:31It couldn't be any more different.
00:07:33Plenty of bling makes you sing.
00:07:35And look at this.
00:07:37It's firing at the moment.
00:07:39Another Japanese entry.
00:07:40The Asiatic countries really are taking a huge step.
00:07:43We've got a Chinese driver as well taking part.
00:07:46It's not about taking part.
00:07:47Well, it's not about taking part.
00:07:49It's about winning as far as these boys are concerned.
00:07:51At the moment, looking like doing just that.
00:07:54Peugeot are in the comfort zone.
00:07:573.22.
00:07:57A sub at 3.22 and a half.
00:08:00This is the race, don't forget.
00:08:01We're not talking about qualifying.
00:08:03That sort of pace would have been more than good enough for pole last time by.
00:08:07What on earth is going on?
00:08:09Beating last year's pole by four seconds during the race.
00:08:12And of course, this is four seconds off their qualifying time as well.
00:08:15So one would be willing to say they've actually gone back a little bit.
00:08:18You know, they're cruising around at 3.22, which is more than enough, like you said, to have beaten the pole last year.
00:08:23So this is just a phenomenal change in pace in just one year.
00:08:27Everybody's got to remember.
00:08:28Oh, two cars standing almost got there.
00:08:30That was really, really tight.
00:08:32It was.
00:08:32This is just showing the difference of the speeds between all the cars.
00:08:35We are seeing a lot of traffic now.
00:08:37This is about the time when all the lapping of the different, you know, classes starts to happen.
00:08:41And this is when a lot of the accidents we'll see all go on.
00:08:44One of the spikers being eaten up.
00:08:45They're just going by one of the factory Corvettes as well.
00:08:48Happy time for them.
00:08:49But we'll get pictures in a moment of those two stopped cars that are very, very dangerous right-hander.
00:08:55A nice degree turn that's claimed so many prisoners.
00:08:57There's that Ferrari just nicely repaired.
00:08:59Keep away from it.
00:09:00It's a new paint scheme.
00:09:01They've been doing that overnight.
00:09:03Threading it beautifully, you've got to say.
00:09:05Montagne, more than adept at this and doing a great job.
00:09:09They've got some real stars on board the Peugeot crew, Peugeot diesels.
00:09:14And, well, to be fair, none of them are trying to outstep each other in terms of their profile.
00:09:21It's great to see them all so relaxed.
00:09:23And I've never seen Villeneuve, for instance, so happy.
00:09:26Yeah, I think a lot of these F1 drivers are really enjoying sports car racing.
00:09:30You know, they've wanted to have a go at it.
00:09:32They're running out of the front at a race like Le Mans.
00:09:34And I think they really think it's fun.
00:09:35They really enjoy these cars.
00:09:37You know, they're just out to try something a bit different.
00:09:39And it's nice to have them involved.
00:09:41Well, Aston Scott saying the race has been held on Father's Day over the last couple of years.
00:09:49Well, he's obviously enjoying a Father's Day himself.
00:09:51He must be a dad if he happened to mention it.
00:09:53If you want to join the chat and ask any questions you like, and we'll do our best to filter our way through them,
00:09:59you click on, or you post it, eurosport.yahoo.co.uk.
00:10:04You go to the message boards, you pick out Motorsport, go to Le Mans, and you'll find the Race Weekend Live thread.
00:10:13And we'll do our best to have a quick look through.
00:10:16Thanks, Rogue Soul, as well, for saying Audi and Peugeot, the LMP1 race.
00:10:22You're absolutely right.
00:10:23Will it be interesting?
00:10:24Well, we're certainly hoping it is.
00:10:25It's fascinating at the moment.
00:10:26We're not quite sure, Rogue Soul, whether it's going to be a race just between the Peugeots themselves when they start racing.
00:10:34That's going to be fascinating, if that's the case, because they will want to sort out amongst themselves who's going to be the top dog on the podium if it comes to that.
00:10:43Can't really see them getting a one, two, three.
00:10:45That man, Villeneuve, we were talking about it just a few moments ago, he's desperate to get on board.
00:10:50Almost looking zen-like there in his lust for the car.
00:10:54And it was Jacques Villeneuve who was so impressive in the wet last year when we watched him in practice and in the race.
00:10:59That's true.
00:11:00Torrential conditions, and he was just incredible.
00:11:02We could really see the skill that he's developed from F1 there.
00:11:05Just, you know, making the Peugeot look like it was on the dry, really.
00:11:08Yeah, and he carried that car all through the night.
00:11:10That was the most impressive thing.
00:11:11His first ever night racing.
00:11:13Yeah.
00:11:14Just showing the skill, really.
00:11:15Just looking down the pits, the 44 Crucial Lola Mazda just come in unexpectedly.
00:11:21The team wasn't ready for it.
00:11:22They've obviously got some problem, though, identifying it.
00:11:24And the fact is, though, it's a miracle that car's even started today.
00:11:28That's the car that Hideki Noda rolled into a ball on Thursday night.
00:11:32And we all thought the worst, not only for him, but for the team as well.
00:11:35But what a job they've done.
00:11:36And once again, congratulations to Lola.
00:11:39They've got their laminators over from Huntingdon.
00:11:41They brought a portable autoclave over.
00:11:44They repaired the chassis.
00:11:45Had two cracks in it.
00:11:47Anyway, the car's going out again now.
00:11:48So it's survived the first hour of Le Mans.
00:11:51That is already a huge hurdle.
00:11:52Oh, well, the Lola Mazda's gone back out, so we're not sure exactly what's happened there.
00:12:04Fairly quick stop, but not planned.
00:12:07Once they realized it was in, they fueled and tired.
00:12:09So I think it's just probably having a Japanese moment.
00:12:11Maybe just a bit of a miscommunication on the radio system there.
00:12:17Here comes the 97 car.
00:12:19That is the 97's Malicelli.
00:12:23Bring that car in then for its stop.
00:12:25That's leading the category at the moment.
00:12:28Just about to lose that lead back to Jamie Mello.
00:12:32Jamie Mello on board the RISI Competizione car will take over the lead in GT2 at this Le Mans.
00:12:38So we are starting to see quite a few of the GT2 cars coming in for their pits now.
00:12:42Much, much longer than what we saw.
00:12:44Half an hour longer than a lot of the LMP1 cars.
00:12:46So we're really seeing the difference in the fuel economy here based between the GT cars and the LMP cars.
00:12:52Yeah, they're showing it the second stop.
00:12:54I don't believe that's correct, Liz, because...
00:12:56I don't think it is.
00:12:57No, Malicelli, he was leading the category.
00:12:58He couldn't have been with two stops.
00:13:00So I think that's probably just a mistake on the transponder time.
00:13:04So it looks like it's Mello van Oberbeck, Johannes van Oberbeck and Richard Leeds.
00:13:09That's our top three in GT2 at the moment.
00:13:11It's Magnussen, Gavin and Brabham.
00:13:13Top three in GT1 and in LMP2.
00:13:18That battle between Blakeamonen and Elgar continues.
00:13:21Although Jeroen has managed to pull out almost two seconds over Kaspar now.
00:13:26So that one's starting to settle down.
00:13:27Number 22 car coming back out of the garage.
00:13:31This is the Tokai University car.
00:13:32It looks like they're back on the floor.
00:13:34Hopefully going to get the thing started.
00:13:36So not a huge problem for them with any luck.
00:13:38Be nice to see them back out on the track running.
00:13:40We do have another car still in the garage, though.
00:13:43And that is the Lamborghini.
00:13:44It's been in for quite a long time.
00:13:45And this is a long, long, long stop for them.
00:13:48So we're waiting what's happened.
00:13:49I'm glad you mentioned that because Kex is out there.
00:13:51And he's desperate to get some news on it.
00:13:53Thanks for your post, Kex.
00:13:54If you could just tell everybody, your mates and all, who might be watching this,
00:13:58which of the Eurosport channels you're actually watching it on?
00:14:02They're just catching up on, I think, the finale of the Dauphiné Libere on International.
00:14:07And if somebody's watching out there, perhaps in Ireland, they might be just getting a bit missed.
00:14:10We are alive for the entire 24 hours.
00:14:14And if you could help out by just telling them on the message boards as well, that would be superb.
00:14:18Thanks to everybody who is on the message boards.
00:14:20It's been great to have you along.
00:14:22Jaguar, she's there, so it's lightning and the rest of you.
00:14:26It's great to have company on such a fantastic event as this.
00:14:30Yeah, I just hope that that Lamborghini does get back out fairly sharpish.
00:14:33But they've got, is it the back end that's off it at the moment?
00:14:36That's the business end.
00:14:37And let's just hope it is not something serious.
00:14:40Because they had a terminal problem last year.
00:14:43The J-Lock outfit, the Japanese Lamborghini owner's club came here, spent a fortune, shipped the car.
00:14:49I think they actually flew it.
00:14:51Goodness only knows how much air freight and excess baggage that must have cost.
00:14:55So they got here and the car just didn't make it, of course.
00:14:58Well, this year has been one of the best showings we've seen from Lamborghini.
00:15:02They've been, you know, really quick, really pushing hard.
00:15:04A lot of people had a lot of hopes for Lamborghini this year.
00:15:06And, you know, a real strong, a very strong lineup.
00:15:09So it's unfortunate to see them in the garage already.
00:15:11I think a lot of people were really hoping that Lamborghini might, you know, hang in there with the top front runners.
00:15:16Well, last time out at Spa, Spa 1,000 kilometers, it actually was leading the race for some time after the Athens had all sorts of problems.
00:15:23But Peter Cox and Vasseroff, they just couldn't keep that lead going.
00:15:28They finished third in the end.
00:15:29It was a podium finish.
00:15:30But it has been going exponentially stronger and stronger every time.
00:15:34It's run, of course, by Hans Ritter Engineering out of Germany.
00:15:37So that car, I think, just keep watching that because they are getting on top of it now.
00:15:41So Dickie's saying he's loving the message boards, having a chat out there.
00:15:46We're loving having you along as well.
00:15:47Aston Scott's there, so-so Phil H.
00:15:49And look at this.
00:15:51Just how difficult is that to thread through at these speeds?
00:15:55It looks like they're hardly moving at all.
00:15:57And just look at it as he juices up Frank Bieler having a look on the inside of the three car.
00:16:01This is a battle for pride here.
00:16:03I think it is, yeah.
00:16:05Side by side down the straight.
00:16:08Well, lucky Luke's lost out, doesn't he?
00:16:10Bieler's got the position.
00:16:11That's a great sight this early on.
00:16:14Well, they've got to kind of keep the pace up.
00:16:16And if you are the quicker, then why not just have a look by him?
00:16:19Remember Bieler, Pirro, the winners, and Werner, the winners the last two years.
00:16:25So they just love to do it again.
00:16:27So there's a warning being handed out to the 97 car.
00:16:30I imagine that's for not moving over quickly enough.
00:16:34That's all we can think of at the moment.
00:16:36It's the Scudera Italian.
00:16:38It's something to do with a pit stop.
00:16:40They've just gone out.
00:16:41Mattia Malicelli brought that car in.
00:16:43And they had a pit stop.
00:16:44So I think something must have happened there.
00:16:46Perhaps they had too many people on the car at one time.
00:16:48Or, you know, yeah, that's very possible.
00:16:50Fueling.
00:16:50It could have been somebody on the car during fueling.
00:16:52Interesting crew, that.
00:16:53They've run accidents for a long time.
00:16:55They've swapped over for Ferraris.
00:16:57You've got to kind of remap your brain, really,
00:16:59if you're going to start getting around those two different machines.
00:17:01Yeah, very, very different.
00:17:02Also, the only Pirelli here on, only Pirelli, the only Ferrari here on Pirelli tyres.
00:17:06Oh, no.
00:17:07The Chamberlain Synergy, number 19.
00:17:09It's not the newest car out there,
00:17:13but certainly one that, well, has graced us for an awful long time.
00:17:17And Hugh Chamberlain, huge as he's known.
00:17:20He is a big lad as well.
00:17:21He's going to need a big heart.
00:17:22He's going to cope with this race this year.
00:17:25It looks like they've got their problems.
00:17:26We're going to take ourselves a short commercial break.
00:17:28And we hope to have your company live here at Eurosport.
00:17:32There's the overall classification.
00:17:33Looks rather familiar, does it not?
00:17:35Peugeot's and Audi's, the top six.
00:17:41Welcome back.
00:17:42You're live at Le Mans.
00:17:43Peugeot's still in dominant form.
00:17:45The top three places held by them.
00:17:48Looks like two at the moment.
00:17:49But believe me, there are three out there
00:17:52as the Matmut tries to thread its way through one of the chicanes on the back straight.
00:17:56We're going to talk to Jos Verstappen.
00:17:57He's just climbed out of the Porsche RS Spyder.
00:18:02And he's the man who put that on class pole.
00:18:06Tremendous effort by the Dutchman.
00:18:08Things have been going great for the Dutch generally,
00:18:10having beaten France 4-1 in the football in the European Championship.
00:18:13There is Hugh Chamberlain.
00:18:16His car running very, very slowly out there, waiting for that to come in.
00:18:19We've got Jos waiting, though, to have a chat about the Porsches.
00:18:22Jos, you are leading the time too, so it's quite a good beginning of the start.
00:18:28Yes, I'm happy because we're leading.
00:18:31But the other car is very close behind us.
00:18:35So it will be a very tough competition during this 24 hours.
00:18:40But we have the speed, we know that.
00:18:43But the main problem is stay out of trouble.
00:18:45And that's the main goal.
00:18:47This car, the Porsche Spyder, is really new in Europe.
00:18:52It looks really fast here.
00:18:54So how's the cars going here?
00:18:58We knew we have a quick car.
00:19:00I mean, top speed is good.
00:19:02But especially the cornering speed of this car is so fantastic.
00:19:05And what is very important for this race, the car is comfortable as now.
00:19:11No tricky issues, no big oversteer, no big understeer.
00:19:16Very well balanced.
00:19:17And I think it's fantastic to have this car and to race here in Le Mans.
00:19:20Thank you, Jörg, good luck.
00:19:24Jos Verstappen there, enjoying life at the top.
00:19:27At least in the last M&B 2.
00:19:30You're on Blekemollen on the 34 car at the moment.
00:19:33The other RS Spyder has got Elsgaard aboard.
00:19:37Meanwhile, we're on board with one of the pleasures here.
00:19:39Yeah, I was just before the start of the race, I was talking to Guy Smith about the Porsche.
00:19:42And as you know, he races that car, Sir Dyson, in the ALMS.
00:19:46He said it is such a difficult car to get set up.
00:19:49But once you get there, he said it's probably the best car he's ever driven.
00:19:52He said it's certainly better than the Bentley, in which he won here in 2003 at Le Mans.
00:19:57And Guy said that's Dyson obviously been taking a while to get used to the car.
00:20:01He's very impressed at the way these guys are doing.
00:20:04Of course, he's not in a Porsche this weekend.
00:20:06He's a little bit jealous, I think, that they're out there.
00:20:08And the way they're going at the moment, if they can run for 24 hours,
00:20:12they're going to be probably in the top 10, I reckon.
00:20:14Yeah, absolutely.
00:20:15I mean, they've now figured out where the reliability lies in Porsches.
00:20:19So that's a big part of it.
00:20:20And, you know, they've made a smart decision to wait a while to come to Le Mans
00:20:23until they had it all dialed in.
00:20:25Yeah, just staggering pit stop strategies here.
00:20:28The 8th Persia comes in off the lead.
00:20:30And Pedro Lamy has just about had enough of being pressured by Montagny.
00:20:34So he's decided to come in.
00:20:36And they've got a strap issue out there.
00:20:39They're having difficulty undoing their own straps.
00:20:41Modifications, it looks like, because those straps look like a bit of a mess,
00:20:45he's certainly loosened them up.
00:20:47So Lamy comes in.
00:20:48Montagny takes over the lead out front.
00:20:50And it'll be a swift change here.
00:20:52Looks like Steph and Sarah's about to get in the car, it looks to me.
00:20:55You like that pink helmet, don't you?
00:20:58Suit him.
00:20:58Yeah, it does, it does.
00:21:00Thanks ever so much, by the way, for those on-site.
00:21:02It's a question for you, Mark.
00:21:03Does the team reckon that the diesels will have their own class in the next couple of years?
00:21:09We suspect they won't be here, Mark, don't we?
00:21:11Well, who knows?
00:21:12Audi have already said their future's not necessarily diesel.
00:21:16Persia, I think, will be.
00:21:17But what sort of diesel it's going to be?
00:21:19Let's just have a look at this pit stop quickly.
00:21:21He ran for nine laps in the first stint.
00:21:23Eleven this time, so Liz, that's beginning to work up towards the twelve.
00:21:27We're forecasting maybe eleven is going to be the pace for the race.
00:21:30I think it won't be far off that, really, because they would have given themselves a bit of a window just to figure out their fuel and be safe at the beginning.
00:21:36But really about two laps off that is about right.
00:21:38Stefan Sarazin heading out now.
00:21:42Fantastic driver.
00:21:43It's going to be exciting to see what sort of time Stefan's going to put in.
00:21:45Also crucially, no tyre change.
00:21:47No, no tyre change.
00:21:48Not a big surprise, really.
00:21:49I mean, it is a bit cooler.
00:21:51You know, I'm sure most people will be double stinting, if not triple stinting.
00:21:54They couldn't do that last time by, last year.
00:21:58They had to change the tyres every single time.
00:22:00On the Bejo's.
00:22:00The balance is much, much improved.
00:22:02If they're double stinting, let's see how it rolls out there with this fresh race rubber.
00:22:07Sorry, not fresh race rubber.
00:22:09Previously, one sector has gone round in terms of their stops.
00:22:13It would be great to see the longevity of that.
00:22:15Thanks to Tom B for that question about the diesels.
00:22:17We think they may well be considering changing some of the rules just to kind of narrow the gap between petrol and diesel.
00:22:23They couldn't really have a separate class in LMP1.
00:22:26It's just nice to keep the mix out there.
00:22:27But they have got a little bit of an advantage, perhaps too much at the moment.
00:22:31They did, for development purposes, give them a helping hand with what they could do to the cars, didn't they, Mark?
00:22:37Yeah, the petrols were given 3% extra restrictor size this year.
00:22:41But the ACO has already said, we agree it's not enough.
00:22:44Yeah.
00:22:44They hadn't actually anticipated how much more development was coming from Peugeot and from Audi this year.
00:22:50So it could be as much as a 10% larger restrictor for next year.
00:22:53So thanks to Tom B for throwing that one up.
00:22:55If you've got any other questions for Liz, a driver perspective, always very, very welcome.
00:23:00It's great to have Liz have the onboarders here.
00:23:02Carlton, just look down at the timing screens, get down to the pink there.
00:23:05Blake and Mellon and Elgar, they are still tied together.
00:23:08And this has been incredible.
00:23:09This has been since the start of the race.
00:23:11We're now, what, an hour and 12 minutes in and they're still going at it hammer and tongs.
00:23:15Yep, the 31 car is the quicker of the two.
00:23:19They're lying in second spot at the moment.
00:23:21Just stops filtering out and all that kind of thing.
00:23:23Best lap so far for them, sub 340.
00:23:26That is very, very quick out there.
00:23:29That's very quick in the race for an LMP2 car.
00:23:31I mean, the times each year for LMP2 seem to get quicker and quicker.
00:23:35So, but that is a very quick pace during the race.
00:23:37What we're just looking for is the third place car, Warren Hughes in LMP2.
00:23:42He's running third at the moment.
00:23:43That's in the 45 Embassy car.
00:23:46Great little car there.
00:23:47Very, very pretty colour scheme.
00:23:49And here comes the ninth car.
00:23:50It only went round one more lap.
00:23:52Didn't want to fit them together.
00:23:53It is a long vehicle.
00:23:55I'm actually always surprised as he wrestles with his straps to get them loose here.
00:23:58I'm always surprised at just how diminutive these cars are.
00:24:02And when you see them on their own, they look like they must be enormous.
00:24:05But when you get up close, they really do shrink in front of you.
00:24:09They're very, very cute.
00:24:10And a very good view there of what goes on just before a pit stop.
00:24:14These drivers are very well prepared.
00:24:15You know, they've undone any drinks bottle they would have had.
00:24:18The radio comes off at the last second, stuck back onto the helmet so it doesn't get in the way.
00:24:22Belts are loosened up so he's ready to jump straight out of the car when he comes in.
00:24:25Really pushed it into pit lane there as well.
00:24:27Really absolutely to the last minute for the brakes.
00:24:29That was Manassian on the escape.
00:24:31This is the nine car that's actually in its box now.
00:24:33You can see how much Manassian was putting through the back wheels as he snooted on the
00:24:38way out there, determined not to lose a single inch of advantage.
00:24:42Absolutely.
00:24:43Well, this is what it's all about.
00:24:44I mean, you can really gain time in a race like a 24-hour race, being quick out of the
00:24:49pits, quick into the pits, not wasting any extra time that you, you know, that you can get
00:24:53away with, really.
00:24:54And something as easy as, you know, having a good run up to the pits.
00:24:57This saves you that few bit of seconds, you know, that adds up over 24 hours.
00:25:00Very important.
00:25:01Well, who's watching the whole race, says Britt Slott, and, well, he says he can't do it because
00:25:07he, unfortunately, he's got to work tomorrow.
00:25:10Well, well, well, fortunately is the word, because this is going to be one heck of a race.
00:25:15We're expecting that it might even turn into something of a classic.
00:25:17It will have to get a bit of a mix, though, between the Audis and the Peugeots.
00:25:21At the moment, Alamant Nish is up into third place as these stops start to filter through.
00:25:27He's surely going to have to come in in a moment, but he's on his opening run here, and I just
00:25:31wonder when he's going to come back.
00:25:36Well, we've wasted the balance of this off, weren't we?
00:25:41So, Christian Cleon.
00:25:42We don't know, is the answer.
00:25:43Right, our driver change is starting now in Peugeot.
00:25:46Christian Cleon on board the number nine car.
00:25:49Jacques Vildo is on board the number seven car, and Sarazan now on board the number eight.
00:25:53We're still waiting for the Audis to come in, make their changes.
00:25:56So, all three Peugeots have made their second stops.
00:25:59The Audis have yet to do that.
00:26:01The LMP2 battle is still going on like crazy.
00:26:04The Corvettes are still leading GT1.
00:26:06They're running quite a bit apart now.
00:26:08Oli Gavin's 13 seconds behind Mags.
00:26:10They were together, and in GT2, there is still only 0.7 of a second between the two cars
00:26:18there.
00:26:19And, incidentally, Johannes van Overbeek has got back past Jamie Mello.
00:26:23So, van Overbeek?
00:26:25Yeah, you know, Johannes has really come on in the last couple of years.
00:26:28He's gotten much, much, much quicker.
00:26:30He's really improved in the ALMS.
00:26:31I enjoyed watching him last year.
00:26:33He's learned a lot from having such, you know, quality co-drivers like he's had.
00:26:38And I think that he's going to really be a force to reckon with in the future.
00:26:41And just now, he's showing what talent he has.
00:26:43Jamie Mello, a fantastic driver.
00:26:45And he's out in front, pushing hard at Le Mans.
00:26:47It's nice to see.
00:26:48And two factory drivers behind him, of course.
00:26:50Exactly.
00:26:50So...
00:26:51Johannes, as the best privateer Porsche driver, won the Porsche Cup, didn't he, last year?
00:26:56Yes, yeah.
00:26:57That is already something.
00:26:58But Porsche haven't yet invited him to join, perhaps, because he's a gentleman.
00:27:01I'd like to see that.
00:27:02But, you know, and he wasn't as quick a few years ago.
00:27:04I think each year he gets better and better.
00:27:06And, you know, he's had some really awesome runs.
00:27:08He's really showed people that he is a force to reckon with.
00:27:11And I'd like to see Porsche give him a shot.
00:27:14Well, great commentary on this legendary race.
00:27:16Yet again, says James W.
00:27:18Thanks for the comment.
00:27:19We'll slap ourselves on the back.
00:27:20And you can slap yourselves on the back as well.
00:27:22It's super to have you out there.
00:27:24He says he works for Peugeot.
00:27:25So, he'd love them to do it.
00:27:27But he also loves the Aston Martins.
00:27:29I think just about everybody loves the Aston Martins.
00:27:31When they're out in the village, the crowd around them is tremendous.
00:27:35Now, on board here with Emmanuel A. Pirro, a real force of Le Mans.
00:27:39I mean, he's been around for ages.
00:27:40Such a charismatic, fun guy.
00:27:42You know, always says the right thing.
00:27:44And so complimentary of France and of this race.
00:27:47And, of course, has won it many times.
00:27:48So, you know, obviously another one I'd love to see him win it again.
00:27:51Because I think he's just...
00:27:52He's a special person in his own right.
00:27:54You know, he's always happy to deal with the crowd.
00:27:56He's always very complimentary of Audi.
00:27:58And, you know, really knows how to take the sport to another level.
00:28:01A little bit overshadowed by Tom Christensen as well.
00:28:04I mean, Emmanuel has been here 11 times.
00:28:05It's true.
00:28:06He's 1'5".
00:28:07Yeah.
00:28:07That's almost 50%.
00:28:09Exactly.
00:28:09That is such a huge record.
00:28:11He's such a good speaker as well.
00:28:12He is.
00:28:13He's just faultless in the press conference yesterday.
00:28:15And really giving the general picture as well.
00:28:17I think he's got a career after the drive.
00:28:20When that dries up, he's going to be part of their PR operation.
00:28:23You can be sure of that.
00:28:24I think this is part of what's kept Emmanuel involved for so long is, you know, he's a really
00:28:28nice person to have for Audi because he says the right thing.
00:28:31He does a good job in the car.
00:28:32He gets in.
00:28:33He's very consistent.
00:28:34You know, he does a bit of everything.
00:28:35A little bit of contact there.
00:28:36The 59 car had just been fast and they're just nudged into the back of one of the Audis.
00:28:42And, well, Alan McNish is on board.
00:28:44Perhaps it was him that got the bump.
00:28:46The first time in this race that McNish has actually become the leader.
00:28:49Of course, he's a pit stop out of sync at the moment.
00:28:52But McNish leading here at Le Mans.
00:28:54This is what Audi wants it to be.
00:28:57Obviously, in 23 hours' time, doesn't it?
00:29:00We've got David Richards waiting for us.
00:29:03Director of Racing at Aston Martin.
00:29:05This should be good.
00:29:07Really fast.
00:29:08How are you going to manage to push them?
00:29:11Well, we're holding about the same pace.
00:29:12If you look now, they got away a bit at the beginning.
00:29:14All the pit stops.
00:29:15They're 25 seconds in front now with the two cars.
00:29:19But we're holding the same pace as them at the moment.
00:29:22And it's a long way to go.
00:29:23Another 23 hours.
00:29:25For sure.
00:29:26What's going to be the strategy?
00:29:28Are you going to push hard until you pass over?
00:29:31Well, you know, with only 30 seconds between the cars.
00:29:33This is a race for 24 hours.
00:29:34It's not going to be one in the first one or two hours.
00:29:37But you just need a steady progress.
00:29:38We've got great drivers in all the cars.
00:29:41So we're looking forward to it.
00:29:42It'll come.
00:29:42The night will come.
00:29:43And tomorrow morning, we'll see what happens.
00:29:45So I come back tomorrow morning.
00:29:47We will be back tomorrow morning.
00:29:50We're hoping to get Dave Richards up in the notary position as well.
00:29:53It's always good for a quote.
00:29:55What was that to share with us today?
00:29:56Yeah, and of course, ProDrive doubly on fire and on two barrels this year with not only the GT1 cars that Dave was just talking about, but that Cherouz Lola Aston Martin engine car.
00:30:08We haven't seen it for a while.
00:30:09We haven't talked about it for a while.
00:30:10It has actually lost the petrol lead, Carlton.
00:30:13It's got behind Bouillon at the moment.
00:30:14Bouillon in the Pescarola.
00:30:16He's got himself into seventh place overall.
00:30:19But Booker still hanging on in there.
00:30:21And they've put in some very quick times.
00:30:23They have done a 2.29 there.
00:30:27But it's interesting.
00:30:28Watching the Peugeot at the top.
00:30:29They're all running on 3.22 as regularly now.
00:30:32They're always the Pescarolos ready to pounce, aren't they?
00:30:35He would love to win it as an owner.
00:30:38Second place, just not good enough as far as he's concerned.
00:30:41We'll see if the great beard, the Lion Man himself, can get back, or at least help his team get back up there, where, of course, he was as a driver.
00:30:48We're going to take a break, and we'll be back live in a moment from Le Mans.
00:30:56Welcome back to Le Mans.
00:30:57We're here on Eurosport, and Alan McNish just completing his second pit stop.
00:31:02He was the race leader until this point.
00:31:03He goes back out again, and those Peugeots are going to be 1, 2, and 3 again.
00:31:08I'm Mark Coe with me.
00:31:09Liz Halliday, Carlton Kirby, bringing you all the live coverage throughout the 24 hours of Le Mans together with the rest of our team.
00:31:16There's McNish then, getting back out into traffic.
00:31:19And Liz, he's stayed on board, of course, so he's triple stinting.
00:31:23Yeah, I think a lot of these top drivers will triple stint their way through, especially on a day like today.
00:31:28It's not that hot.
00:31:29You know, this is definitely a circuit where you can do a lot of stints, because you have so many straights where you can have a bit of a deep breath and, you know, have a rest.
00:31:36So, certainly, we'll see a lot of these top drivers doing three stints.
00:31:39Now, that's interesting you're saying about that, because, of course, the three Peugeots have all changed drivers, and they're coupes.
00:31:45That's true.
00:31:46There's definitely going to be a lot hotter in there.
00:31:48I mean, a lot hotter.
00:31:49There's a serious advantage, as far as temperature goes, by being in a car without a roof, and I personally much prefer it.
00:31:55So, yeah, that could be part of an issue, or maybe it was just their plan all along, get all the drivers in, and then carry on with some longer stints.
00:32:01That's what a lot of teams will do.
00:32:02Now, despite the caption, this is our new leader, Stefan Sarazan.
00:32:06He is now on board the car.
00:32:07He put on pole position for the second consecutive year.
00:32:10That distinctive helmet there, and Stefan, he's going to try and drop that time down to 3.20, I'm sure.
00:32:17Look for him putting a quick lap in, fastest lap of the race, perhaps before conditions might change.
00:32:25Stefan Sarazan, of course, was a fantastic driver in the Aston Martin back a couple years ago, and moved quite smoothly into this Peugeot.
00:32:32So, really a force to reckon with in any car, I think, and it's nice to see him here back on pole again for the second year in a row.
00:32:39And again, a Formula One driver of the past, but only one Grand Prix, and it was a Grand Prix, how's that?
00:32:44The Brazilian Grand Prix in 1999, when he rolled the Prost, the final corner coming onto the top straight there, and that was his one and only appearance.
00:32:53For some reason, he wasn't invited back again.
00:32:55Well, certainly he stepped into sports car racing with a bit of panache, so there's not been any problem there for his career.
00:33:00We've all been impressed. Christian Klein in second, and Jack Villeneuve in third, and we're just hearing...
00:33:09Yes, it's the 83 Ferrari has abandoned due to an accident.
00:33:15I'm just wondering, actually, whether that Rizzi Competizione car, it was the green car, Green Liberty, was it Crone Racing?
00:33:22I think it was, Rizzi Crone, the team owner.
00:33:23They have abandoned, we are hearing. It must be deep into the course here.
00:33:29Maybe it was one of those cars that we saw that they, static on the road, just nosed into part of the concrete area.
00:33:36But it has abandoned the 83 car we are hearing.
00:33:40Yeah, Dick Jonson started that car.
00:33:41Tracy Crone had certainly crashed it here last Sunday and put himself in hospital for a short time.
00:33:46Luckily, he was able to fly home the following morning, but did a lot of damage to the car.
00:33:50Sent back to Michelotto in Italy.
00:33:52His rebuilt came back here, but sadly, it's race is over.
00:33:55Well, we're looking at the 20 car, the Epsilon machine.
00:33:59That was the one that was always going to be here, and the 32 as well, which is always terrific to see.
00:34:05Incidentally, we won't use the marker of doom on our war board yet on the 83 car until we've got double confirmation.
00:34:13But we're hearing the initial reports that the 83 car has pulled out.
00:34:18Real blow for Rizzi Competizione, and a real blow as well for the scrap in GT2.
00:34:23Yeah, and very, very early on.
00:34:24It's always extremely disappointing to have it happen this early on, to be out of the race.
00:34:28I mean, in a 24-hour race, to be out after, well, less than an hour.
00:34:32Well, no, an hour and a half, sorry, is really disappointing.
00:34:35And, you know, sadly, probably none of the drivers have been in aside from the one who started.
00:34:39And, you know, this is why a lot of teams sometimes try and cycle all their drivers through.
00:34:42They try and get a stint in so that everybody gets a chance to get in the car.
00:34:46And then they move through to double stints, and, you know, just because these things can happen.
00:34:50Yeah.
00:34:50We've got a question in from Mr. Formula One on the forum.
00:34:53It says, just how fast will the Formula One car go around this circuit?
00:34:57Probably around about Peugeot pace, I reckon.
00:34:59What do you think?
00:35:00Oh, yeah, perhaps a little bit quicker.
00:35:03Just a little bit.
00:35:05But no, I'm not sure, but it's going to be very, very fast.
00:35:07I wonder if they'll ever put one on here just to test it out.
00:35:10I don't think the ACO would actually allow it.
00:35:12They wouldn't want that kind of thing, sort of badging themselves up as being a slower vehicle, perhaps.
00:35:17But the question is, would a Formula One car be able to last the 24 hours?
00:35:21And the answer to that is definitely not.
00:35:23Yeah, I think that would be a feat of nature in itself, personally.
00:35:26Absolutely.
00:35:27But, yeah, there you go.
00:35:29Formula One 24-hour race.
00:35:31There's our future.
00:35:32Forget it.
00:35:32Remember that British American Racing took their Honda-powered Formula One car to the Utah Saltfrats to try and get the all-time record.
00:35:40They only broke 300 kilometers an hour and gave up at that point.
00:35:44Well, as you know, we've seen the Peugeots here at 3.44.
00:35:47We've seen Formula One cars gain quicker on other circuits, Monza and Spa.
00:35:50But quite interesting, when they try to do straight-line driving, they just don't see if you've got to hack it.
00:35:55Yeah, that's true.
00:35:56Jaguar Ash says we should start a campaign to get Jaguar back here.
00:36:01Well, they're around, I have to tell you, Jaguar Ash.
00:36:06Thanks for your call.
00:36:08Jaguar heavily, heavily part of the proceedings around the village here.
00:36:14We're not just talking, they're not just here for the barbecue, that's for sure.
00:36:18They have plans for the future, and, well, we're looking forward to finding out exactly what it's about.
00:36:23The late David Leslie, it does tie in with him.
00:36:26He was busy testing a car that we believe could well have been a future contender here at Le Mans.
00:36:33Oh, yes, very much so.
00:36:34The car's racing, of course, in the FIGT now, and it's already starting to show some good form.
00:36:40But if that could become an official factory entry, great.
00:36:44Instead, we're looking at LMP2, they're moving up the order, 13th and 14th.
00:36:48Now, there's two cars, the Dutch car and the Danish car, tied together still.
00:36:52I mean, after an hour and a half's racing, they're still only two seconds together.
00:36:57But Frank Bieler, he's just got out of the number one Audi.
00:37:02We're just moving towards him with our camera, edging Ebbers are slightly nearer and nearer.
00:37:06He's not looking best happy.
00:37:08I'm sure he'll be sparing his a few smiles, but it's the number one, don't forget, the Audi that Frank has just got out of.
00:37:16It must be a difficult time for him.
00:37:18I can't wait to find out his comments on a day like this, when Peugeot 1, 2 and 3,
00:37:23and incidentally, lapping, the fastest has just been set by Sarrazan, 321.872.
00:37:31He's gone three, he's just nudging towards that magical 320 mark here.
00:37:36That's a tremendous blast around.
00:37:40Yep, he is out there on the top, and nobody is close to him, not even his colleagues.
00:37:46A full second slower is Klein, and Villeneuve is just in the warm-up mode at the moment,
00:37:51on board the seventh car, and he's running in third place.
00:37:55As for the Audis, well, their best time so far, Alan McNish, 325.5 seconds, 325.5,
00:38:05and, well, that's a country mile, really, or it will be by the time this race unfolds,
00:38:11if they have got the fuel mileage on board with Emmanuel Di Piro.
00:38:14Let's speak to Frank Bieler, though, and get his thoughts on the difference between these two great marks here.
00:38:20Frank, the first end looks good. How was it?
00:38:24It was okay.
00:38:27I'm quite happy. The car is okay. No major problem.
00:38:31I think the grip level is not very good at the moment,
00:38:34so I hope this will develop during the race,
00:38:37and then our car should be even better.
00:38:40But the position is okay.
00:38:42It's a long race, and we are quite happy with what we have at the moment.
00:38:47There is a fight between you and the other Audi,
00:38:50because you just passed six, so Lourdes just passed you.
00:38:53Yes, I mean, it was good fun.
00:38:55I mean, once he was sucked in traffic, then later on I was sucked in traffic,
00:39:00and so we were changing two or three times,
00:39:02which was nice, so that doesn't make it too boring then.
00:39:07Thank you very much.
00:39:09Yeah, thanks, Frank.
00:39:10He didn't exactly sound overjoyed, did he?
00:39:13He's kind of taking big breaths before he answered every question.
00:39:16It's not that he doesn't understand the question.
00:39:18It's just what on earth do you say when people are pointing out,
00:39:21essentially, a huge gap between yourself and the leaders?
00:39:25Well, it's especially hard for someone who has one limo,
00:39:27and also, you know, for Audi, who's been such a dominant force here for so long.
00:39:31You know, it's got to be very difficult to be quite a ways back, frankly,
00:39:35off the Peugeot's pace, and yes, you know, he can confidently say,
00:39:39it's 24 hours, it's fine, you know, we're doing what we want,
00:39:41but it's still a bit of a blow to your heart, isn't it,
00:39:44when you're, you know, just back off the guys and you want to be up in front.
00:39:47Yeah, and the other thing, of course,
00:39:48we're not sure Frank will be continuing after Le Mans,
00:39:51because his contract isn't being renewed past Le Mans,
00:39:54and a lot depends on how he does this weekend, I guess.
00:39:57Yes, exactly.
00:39:59Liz, we just talked about triple stinting,
00:40:01but Nish is the only one of the three Audi drivers to have done it,
00:40:03because Lua took over from Rockenfella,
00:40:05and Piero took over from Biela,
00:40:07but Alan has stayed in the car.
00:40:09Does this suggest he's got more stamina, better fitness?
00:40:12Well, Alan tends to always stay in the car for quite a long time.
00:40:14He's always been that sort of driver that gets in and does a triple.
00:40:17He does that in the ALMS as well a lot of the time,
00:40:19really stays in for a long, long, long stint.
00:40:21So I think maybe it's just a decision between team and drivers,
00:40:25and maybe just what everybody's happy with,
00:40:26and it may have even been an issue where they've said,
00:40:28you know, Alan, if you're happy to stay in for three, then stay in,
00:40:31and he's very, very fit.
00:40:33Like I say, he's always been a driver who tends to stay in the car
00:40:35for a long period of time,
00:40:36and to be honest, if you're putting the times in
00:40:38and you're consistent and doing a good job,
00:40:40there's no point to get out if you're happy to stay in.
00:40:42Thanks to Freddie Kaye.
00:40:43He throws up a poser.
00:40:45He says he's seen pictures of the R15 lying around on the web.
00:40:51I think that's probably somebody's imagination.
00:40:54The word is that Audi may well start thinking about
00:40:56using a different class vehicle out there, Mark.
00:41:00Yeah, this is a German magazine who came up with this sort of photo montage,
00:41:04built a car from computer graphics,
00:41:08and then sprung a surprise to that this is the new Audi.
00:41:11It doesn't actually exist.
00:41:12It's only virtual in this German magazine's mind.
00:41:15We're thinking they may well start thinking about GT1 or the rest.
00:41:18Of course, they may be near the truth, of course.
00:41:22The word at the moment is that they would use the R8
00:41:24as a basis for a coupe in an MP1, of course.
00:41:29Which should be very exciting.
00:41:31It's the RS4 that everyone's pointing to,
00:41:33saying this could be the next GT1 car.
00:41:35Yeah, absolutely.
00:41:36So, RS4 running in GT1, the R8 running in the top class,
00:41:40kind of a la McLaren a few years ago.
00:41:42That would be fascinating, wouldn't it?
00:41:44And, of course, Aston Martin are working towards an LMP2-engined car for next year,
00:41:48so they've got coverage in all four classes.
00:41:50I mean, Dave Richards hasn't denied that.
00:41:53It's not a real shock, though,
00:41:54because you've seen the impressive comeback of a Porsche LMP car.
00:41:59And I think a lot of people have seen Porsche winning in GT2 this
00:42:01and then winning in LMP2.
00:42:03It would be nice to sort of take over that side of things,
00:42:05you know, with some other manufacturers as well.
00:42:07It would be great to have a fight between, you know,
00:42:09some previous only LMP or GT, you know,
00:42:12up against each other in another class.
00:42:13I think it would be exciting and sort of open things up a bit more.
00:42:16It's amazing how minds are just focused
00:42:17when it comes to all of the different classes here.
00:42:20And the word is as well that Aston Martin
00:42:21would like to be dominant in all of the classes.
00:42:24And why not, indeed?
00:42:25Porsche have played the game so successfully
00:42:28throughout every single one of the classes
00:42:30and just loving exactly that.
00:42:33Just the competition within that band is what it's all about.
00:42:36We're going to take ourselves a short commercial break.
00:42:38There will be a few chops and changes of personnel
00:42:41as we go through the day.
00:42:42But we will be staying live,
00:42:43sort of flitting between our various Eurosport channels
00:42:45so if ever you do lose the pictures,
00:42:47just go back to your menu
00:42:48and make sure you check out
00:42:50what's being shown on the other Eurosport channels.
00:42:52We will be live throughout this race.
00:42:53Don't forget that.
00:42:57Welcome back.
00:42:58Another smooth stop at Aston Martin,
00:43:00one of the golf carts just coming out.
00:43:03Beautiful, beautiful sight.
00:43:04Looks like he's all on his own here.
00:43:05Nice bit of clear track as he heads up towards the Dunlop curbs.
00:43:08Thanks to everybody on the website.
00:43:10If you'd like to join the conversation,
00:43:12it's eurosport.yahoo.co.uk.
00:43:14Go to the message boards,
00:43:17hit motorsport,
00:43:18find Le Mans.
00:43:19It's Le Mans.
00:43:20It's the race weekend live.
00:43:22Race weekend live is the thread.
00:43:24And there's an awful lot of fans
00:43:25who just love this stuff just as you do.
00:43:28Incidentally, those side lights
00:43:29that you just got a view of there,
00:43:31the green lights lit up,
00:43:32all three of them on this car,
00:43:33the 009 car,
00:43:34which shows that it is third in class at the moment.
00:43:37Third in class for 009.
00:43:40It did pit off second.
00:43:41We've been talking about coupes this afternoon
00:43:43for LMP2.
00:43:45Good news for the speedy racing team,
00:43:48Seba.
00:43:49Xavier Pompidou's moved himself up into third in class.
00:43:52He's now in the top 18.
00:43:53The other two cars,
00:43:54the two Porsches of Verstappen and Elgarde,
00:43:57they are 13th and 14th.
00:43:59But again,
00:44:00coupes are starting to make their mark here.
00:44:02And this car will look out at the moment.
00:44:04Antonio Garcia,
00:44:05he came into the pits
00:44:06and he actually jumped Oliver Beretta's Corvette
00:44:09when they came out.
00:44:10So we believe that that car at the end of his lap
00:44:12is going to be in second place.
00:44:13And of course,
00:44:14of course,
00:44:14fantastic for Antonio to get his shot
00:44:16in the works car at this Le Mans.
00:44:18I have shared a car with him.
00:44:20He's a great guy,
00:44:21amazing Aston driver,
00:44:22really a lot of skill.
00:44:23And I think it's thrilling for him
00:44:25to have been involved in the works Aston opportunity
00:44:27this time around.
00:44:28Well,
00:44:28David Bradham had just closed down
00:44:30and on and on and on
00:44:31on Olly Gavin's tail.
00:44:32And then finally,
00:44:33managed to say,
00:44:34when they handed the cars over,
00:44:36able to jump that car.
00:44:37Oliver Beretta's now taken over from Olly Gavin.
00:44:40So at the moment,
00:44:41Magnuson García
00:44:42and Beretta
00:44:42appear to be our top three,
00:44:44but Magnuson,
00:44:45we're not sure what he's doing at the moment
00:44:47because he's been shown
00:44:47he's no pit stops,
00:44:48which is quite untrue.
00:44:50We know he's had two.
00:44:51Wendling has only had one.
00:44:52We're waiting for that Aston Martin to come in.
00:44:54But up top,
00:44:55Sarazan,
00:44:56Klien
00:44:57and
00:44:58Villeneuve.
00:44:59Situation normal for Persia.
00:45:00Absolutely.
00:45:01Villeneuve
00:45:01just happy to pace it around there.
00:45:04And he's enjoying it as well.
00:45:05Last lap of 327.182.
00:45:07Not the quickest for that car,
00:45:09but he's coming up to speed now
00:45:10and he's going through
00:45:10several speed guns at the back of the track
00:45:12and looking happy.
00:45:13Connor Ray says,
00:45:14what happened to the Lambo?
00:45:15I can tell you,
00:45:15Connor,
00:45:16the 55 machine has still got the back end off
00:45:19and they don't look in any kind of hurry
00:45:21from what we can see.
00:45:22It's kind of diagonally across
00:45:24from our commentary position
00:45:25and I'm hoping it's not terminal.
00:45:27Another Lambo bad luck story at Le Mans itself.
00:45:30So that would be a heartbreaker
00:45:31after the J-Lock boys just packed up
00:45:33and went home like this.
00:45:34We haven't even warmed up the markers
00:45:35to do yet.
00:45:35I mean,
00:45:36it's too early.
00:45:37Well,
00:45:37we think we've got one car already gone.
00:45:39That's the 83 Rizzi Ferrari
00:45:41declared at an end
00:45:43and withdrawn,
00:45:44but haven't got officially that just yet.
00:45:47Magnussen brings in the lead Corvette,
00:45:49the 63 car.
00:45:50They jump on the car.
00:45:51They've got tyres,
00:45:52fuel
00:45:53and there'll be a driver change.
00:45:54There we go.
00:45:55Well,
00:45:56that's that.
00:45:56But the pictures you're watching
00:45:57are the Bergeau
00:45:58just flying its trade
00:46:00absolutely brilliantly
00:46:01up to the Dunlop curves
00:46:02and really,
00:46:03just look at that.
00:46:04How smooth does that look?
00:46:06Almost looks like a training run.
00:46:08Believe me,
00:46:08anything but.
00:46:09The number eight car
00:46:10just went round
00:46:11in 3.22.0.25.
00:46:13It's actually pacing
00:46:15its best lap
00:46:16for 3.21.
00:46:18So,
00:46:183.22,
00:46:19don't forget,
00:46:20during the race
00:46:20it would have been
00:46:21more than good enough
00:46:22for Paul last time by.
00:46:24There's the seven car
00:46:24in the hands of Jacques Villeneuve
00:46:26and his pace
00:46:28is starting to rise as well.
00:46:30A little bit of traffic
00:46:30last time by
00:46:31slowing down
00:46:32but solidly in third place.
00:46:34Alan McNich,
00:46:34the best of the Audis
00:46:37at the moment
00:46:37and the Porsches,
00:46:39the RS fighters
00:46:39have just been split
00:46:40for the time being.
00:46:41Pascarola of Bregoire
00:46:43is just between them
00:46:45with Elgar and Verstappen
00:46:46running in second place
00:46:47at the moment.
00:46:47They've been
00:46:48kind of swapping positions,
00:46:49almost pacing each other
00:46:50at the top
00:46:50of the LMP2 standings.
00:46:52Super pit stop
00:46:53for the Corvette team.
00:46:54They've got that car
00:46:55with Johnny O'Connell
00:46:56out so quickly.
00:46:57They're still in the lead
00:46:58and right behind him
00:46:59Carl Wendling
00:47:00has brought the second
00:47:01of the Gulf Astons in.
00:47:03That's the 007 car.
00:47:04He's just had a quick stop
00:47:05as well.
00:47:06Fuel and tyres
00:47:07and who's taking over
00:47:08from Wendling?
00:47:09Let's see.
00:47:09They've all done two stints now
00:47:11as he goes past
00:47:12the transponder.
00:47:13It's not changing
00:47:13at the moment.
00:47:14Has he stayed on board?
00:47:15I think possibly he has.
00:47:16I didn't see a driver change
00:47:18go on there
00:47:18but we weren't paying attention.
00:47:19OK, fair enough.
00:47:20Puccini.
00:47:21Puccini's on board.
00:47:23Just looking at some
00:47:24of the loose wires
00:47:25which look to be attached
00:47:26to just below
00:47:29the windscreen wiper.
00:47:30There's rather an
00:47:31incongruous knot
00:47:32in the wires there.
00:47:34Slightly,
00:47:36it looks a lot cleaner
00:47:37on board this Peugeot,
00:47:38I can tell you that much.
00:47:39So, yeah,
00:47:41that's the sister car actually.
00:47:43Clyde,
00:47:44just taking a little bit
00:47:45of a drink.
00:47:45Yeah, he's sucking his thumb.
00:47:48Yeah, that happens a lot.
00:47:50Just releasing the valve there
00:47:51to give himself
00:47:52a little toot
00:47:52of something wet
00:47:53and he'll be pleased
00:47:54about that
00:47:55and they'll be pleased
00:47:56as well
00:47:57about the progress
00:47:57that they're making
00:47:58out there.
00:47:58Peugeot looking so dominant,
00:48:00Mark.
00:48:00He comes back
00:48:01to the age-old question
00:48:02about distance.
00:48:03Oh, there's a spin-up
00:48:04and there's debris
00:48:05in the circuit as well
00:48:06so it looks like
00:48:07there's been contact.
00:48:08Been in the wall
00:48:08and he's so lucky
00:48:09it's happened just here
00:48:10but maybe he was slowing
00:48:11down to come in.
00:48:12It's the 12 car
00:48:13and he's got damage
00:48:14at the back end.
00:48:15Sheru's racing systems
00:48:16and it's muscle milk
00:48:17and, well,
00:48:19he's muscled himself
00:48:19into the armco there
00:48:21and that's a shame
00:48:21and he's not alone.
00:48:23There's been contact
00:48:24clearly
00:48:24and just zooming over.
00:48:27Unfortunately,
00:48:28he just switched away
00:48:28from it
00:48:29and this looks,
00:48:30I'm hoping that's tired
00:48:31but it may well be
00:48:32something mechanical
00:48:33at the back now.
00:48:34That car running
00:48:34in 23rd place.
00:48:35We think it might be
00:48:36Greg Fickett on board.
00:48:37Perhaps you can recognise
00:48:38his helmet, Liz.
00:48:40Oh, I'm not sure
00:48:40but I know he did start
00:48:42the race, definitely.
00:48:42This is his first
00:48:43Le Mans as well.
00:48:45An exciting opportunity
00:48:46for the ex-trans-am driver.
00:48:48But we're not really sure
00:48:49what happened there.
00:48:50It's come up as grass.
00:48:51OK.
00:48:52Not sure what happened there.
00:48:54You know,
00:48:55possibly maybe he actually
00:48:56slowed down to come
00:48:57into the pits
00:48:57and there was a bit
00:48:58of a misunderstanding there.
00:48:59He may well have
00:48:59picked up debris
00:49:00from another car.
00:49:01Possibly, yeah.
00:49:02It's very possible.
00:49:02There is one out there.
00:49:03He may have just had
00:49:05an accident.
00:49:05He's gone over.
00:49:06It's debris.
00:49:07Yeah, that's possible.
00:49:08Mark's just sifting through
00:49:09trying to see if we've got
00:49:10another closer picture of it.
00:49:11What does that look like?
00:49:12It looks like there's
00:49:12the front end missing
00:49:13off that car.
00:49:14So it's been quite a big impact
00:49:16it looks like.
00:49:16It's the Zytec of Karim OJ,
00:49:18the man who crashed
00:49:19on the 19th hour last year
00:49:21when heading for a podium finished.
00:49:22What a shame.
00:49:23Oh, dear.
00:49:23Unfortunately, this is, like we say,
00:49:27not the first time this sort of thing
00:49:28has happened at Karim at Le Mans.
00:49:30I hate to say that,
00:49:31but, you know,
00:49:31he has had the odd record
00:49:33of having an accident at Le Mans.
00:49:35So I sincerely hope
00:49:36that this was not something
00:49:37that was his fault.
00:49:38But very early on
00:49:39to be having an accident
00:49:40such as that.
00:49:41Yeah, this is the car,
00:49:42of course, his mother bought.
00:49:43So, owned by Mrs. OJ.
00:49:45Mommy won't be pleased.
00:49:46Yeah.
00:49:47Mrs. won't be pleased.
00:49:49Let's take a look at this.
00:49:51Now, that was late on
00:49:52and I think they both were involved.
00:49:55Yeah, there was contact there.
00:49:56That was the end of a spin
00:49:59caused by contact
00:50:00by the looks of things.
00:50:01They're just changing the wheels over
00:50:02before they actually do anything.
00:50:03Deal with the back,
00:50:04check it properly.
00:50:05Now that they've done that,
00:50:07well, we've got to put them back on,
00:50:08as if you're going to put them back in the car.
00:50:11Well, they're not worried about it enough
00:50:13to push the car onto the car, are they?
00:50:14Look, they're not going to go out with that.
00:50:16He might, yeah.
00:50:17Finally, the covers comes off the back.
00:50:20We're going to have a word
00:50:21with Jan Magnussen in just a moment
00:50:23from the Corvette 63 car,
00:50:25the lead car.
00:50:26Connell's having that one now,
00:50:27and Bradley at the moment.
00:50:28Class lead, but significantly marked.
00:50:30The Aston's have started to creep up.
00:50:32This has been the lucky car
00:50:33in the LMS ships.
00:50:34It's one that's had all the luck,
00:50:35all the wins,
00:50:36whereas the Ollies haven't.
00:50:37Let's hear what he's got to say.
00:50:39Jan, very good, sir.
00:50:42Still leading.
00:50:43Easy, sir.
00:50:45No, it's not so easy.
00:50:47Conditions are a little bit different
00:50:49than when we were head-quantifying.
00:50:52So the setup of the car right now
00:50:54is not so good.
00:50:55I think when the track starts to grip up,
00:50:58it will be better for us.
00:50:59But right now,
00:50:59we're hanging on a little bit.
00:51:01But everybody's just trying
00:51:03to settle down their pace,
00:51:04and I think that's what we're doing now.
00:51:06It'll be okay, I'm sure.
00:51:08The Aston Martin are pushing really hard.
00:51:10They're now second just behind you.
00:51:12How do you get a minute?
00:51:15Well, you know,
00:51:16it's early.
00:51:20I don't mind if they lead
00:51:21for an hour or two
00:51:22in the beginning of the race,
00:51:23as long as we lead at the end.
00:51:25Thank you, Jan.
00:51:29Doug says he doesn't care
00:51:30just for the time being
00:51:31as long as they lead at the end.
00:51:33Well, that's the trick,
00:51:36quite frankly.
00:51:38Carlton, while that's been going on,
00:51:40fabulous action in the pits
00:51:41that we haven't seen on the screen,
00:51:43Johannes van Oberbeck came in,
00:51:44still leading GT2,
00:51:46followed in by Jamie Mello.
00:51:47They got out again.
00:51:48Van Oberbeck still in the lead.
00:51:50But the interesting thing,
00:51:51Mika Salo's taken over the car,
00:51:53and they went out almost together.
00:51:55So in that case,
00:51:56there's a driver change
00:51:57that didn't take any longer
00:51:58than not changing a driver.
00:52:00Well, let's be honest.
00:52:01This team is very, very polished.
00:52:03Mika and Jamie have driven
00:52:05for a long time together now,
00:52:06a couple of years,
00:52:07maybe even three years now.
00:52:08So certainly I would expect
00:52:10their pit stops to be
00:52:11absolutely polished to perfection.
00:52:14So I'm not surprised
00:52:15that they've been that quick.
00:52:16Now, Johannes has got an hour
00:52:17of running under him,
00:52:18so he's familiar with the track now,
00:52:19the continuity's there.
00:52:20Mika's just got to learn
00:52:21the conditions, hasn't he,
00:52:23for the first lap or two.
00:52:24So is that going to give
00:52:25Johannes just the racer's edge
00:52:26for a while?
00:52:27Well, I don't know.
00:52:28I mean, Mika Salo's very,
00:52:29very quick to get right on the pace.
00:52:31I mean, he's always been
00:52:31that sort of driver.
00:52:32You know, he's bang on
00:52:33his best time straight away.
00:52:34So I don't think it's going to be
00:52:36that big of a difference,
00:52:37to be honest.
00:52:37And, you know,
00:52:38I think he's out that thing
00:52:39quicker so far.
00:52:40Well, we won't know yet.
00:52:41Yeah, we'll see.
00:52:42But no, I don't think
00:52:43there's going to be much advantage
00:52:44when you're talking about
00:52:45a driver like Mika Salo.
00:52:46I think it's hard
00:52:47to find any advantage over him.
00:52:49It certainly is.
00:52:50We're going to have
00:52:50a few personnel changes right here.
00:52:52We've got Jeremy Shaw
00:52:53just coming into the hot seat
00:52:54in just a few moments of time.
00:52:57We've got the Spikers as well
00:52:59there in the pits.
00:53:00It's nice and calm,
00:53:02I have to say.
00:53:03No hurry about them at all.
00:53:05Well, you don't want it
00:53:06that calm, fellas.
00:53:08I'm just wondering, actually,
00:53:09just we spoke to Peter Dunbrecht.
00:53:12We mentioned it during
00:53:13the warm-up this morning.
00:53:15Peter Dunbrecht has just been
00:53:16saying that the car
00:53:17has taken a step forward.
00:53:20But unfortunately for them,
00:53:22everyone else has as well.
00:53:23And that is a huge shame.
00:53:25Ashton Martin and the 10 car.
00:53:27Oh, my life.
00:53:28It's all gone terribly wrong
00:53:30for them.
00:53:30That is a big accident as well.
00:53:32Booker is there.
00:53:33The 41 car incidentally
00:53:34has lost a wheel
00:53:35and just is beached.
00:53:36Can't move anywhere.
00:53:37And that's a big one.
00:53:38It's a big one.
00:53:39And that is a huge shame.
00:53:41Cherus Racing Systems.
00:53:43And they're saying,
00:53:44shut it down.
00:53:44Stop trying to drive it out.
00:53:45You're not going to get
00:53:46back to the pits.
00:53:47You're going to have
00:53:47to be dragged out.
00:53:48There it is.
00:53:50Just trying to see
00:53:51which Indy hit first.
00:53:52Back end.
00:53:53And it's the expensive part,
00:53:55unfortunately.
00:53:56And this is a sad thing to see.
00:53:59Sad indeed.
00:54:01Liz, a heartbreaker
00:54:02when you're back waiting to go in.
00:54:04They were just actually
00:54:05heading back to make that change.
00:54:07And, well, you know,
00:54:10if you don't get to drive
00:54:11and you're actually waiting,
00:54:12you're all keyed up,
00:54:13you've done all the training,
00:54:14you've done everything as well,
00:54:15that must be more disappointing
00:54:16even than for the mechanics
00:54:18who've got to deal with this.
00:54:18Yeah, I mean,
00:54:19that's the worst fear
00:54:21for any driver
00:54:22is that you're going to
00:54:22come all the way to Le Mans
00:54:23and not get a chance
00:54:24to drive at all.
00:54:25You know, and especially,
00:54:26I think he's gone off there
00:54:27at the Dunlop Chicane,
00:54:28it looked like,
00:54:29which is a, you know,
00:54:30that's a tricky area.
00:54:31That's a place where
00:54:31a lot of people have lost it
00:54:32and crashed at high speed.
00:54:33And it is very, you know,
00:54:34it's a bit bumpy under braking
00:54:35and it's a bit polished
00:54:36and it's very easy to lock
00:54:37the rear wheels there
00:54:38under braking.
00:54:39And I'm thinking
00:54:39that perhaps that's happened.
00:54:40He's just overcooked it
00:54:41a little bit
00:54:41and then it's fired it
00:54:43off backwards.
00:54:44But, yeah, you know,
00:54:45really, really unfortunate
00:54:46this early on
00:54:47because, you know,
00:54:48the mechanics have done
00:54:49all the work,
00:54:49the drivers are here
00:54:50to do their job
00:54:51and either you've not
00:54:52driven at all
00:54:53or you've done very little
00:54:53and it's all over
00:54:55and done with
00:54:55before the night's even set.
00:54:56It's a real shame.
00:54:57And, of course,
00:54:58going off in that area
00:54:59as well,
00:55:00the marshals certainly
00:55:01aren't going to let you
00:55:02come back into a chicane.
00:55:03It's a very, very busy place,
00:55:04isn't it?
00:55:05Yeah, it is.
00:55:05You can't get a proper view
00:55:06either at that point.
00:55:07It is, and unfortunately,
00:55:08a lot of it comes down
00:55:09to where you end up
00:55:10when you've had a spin
00:55:10or a crash like that.
00:55:12Sometimes people can be lucky.
00:55:13You can end up facing
00:55:13just so that you can
00:55:14actually sort of
00:55:15get the car back out again
00:55:16but a lot of times
00:55:17the marshals will just stop you.
00:55:18It depends what sort
00:55:19of safety zone you're in.
00:55:20Yeah, absolutely.
00:55:21You also saw the 41
00:55:21training performance machine,
00:55:24the Zytec 07S
00:55:25and Karim OJ
00:55:26who's just lost the front end
00:55:28just detached wheel
00:55:29and it really did look
00:55:31snapped off as well.
00:55:32There's going to be
00:55:33all kinds of suspension issues
00:55:35and the Porsche No. 8
00:55:36is coming into the pits as well.
00:55:38We'll be having a look
00:55:38at that in a moment
00:55:39and the roar of the cars
00:55:41as they come by.
00:55:42We may well try and get
00:55:43an interview for you
00:55:44down there as well
00:55:44as we welcome Jeremy.
00:55:46Sure, Jeremy,
00:55:47it's been amazing so far.
00:55:50So much has gone on.
00:55:51Yeah, no real surprises
00:55:53I don't think
00:55:53from my perspective.
00:55:54You know, the Peugeots,
00:55:56they were the class
00:55:57of the field in qualifying.
00:55:58They've maintained that form
00:55:59in the race.
00:56:00The Audis have been running well
00:56:02but just not well enough
00:56:03in terms of outright pace
00:56:04of course slow.
00:56:05It's very, very early stages
00:56:07in this race
00:56:07but the picture hasn't changed
00:56:09and that is the order.
00:56:11It's the turbo diesel
00:56:12way out in front
00:56:13and as you were just saying
00:56:14it's really sad
00:56:15to see that Lola Aston
00:56:16having that problem.
00:56:17It certainly is.
00:56:18We were hoping
00:56:19that that was going to be
00:56:20one of the lead petrol cars
00:56:21and maybe even just dice it
00:56:23a little bit
00:56:23to unseat one of the diesels.
00:56:26It did that in qualification
00:56:27but it's a heartbreaker
00:56:28for them for now.
00:56:30Let's just hope
00:56:30it's fixable
00:56:31and they can get back out there.
00:56:32You wouldn't want to wish
00:56:33any ill on anybody
00:56:35least of all that crew.
00:56:36We'll be back
00:56:37after this short break
00:56:38stay with us live here.
00:56:43Welcome back.
00:56:44We've just seen
00:56:44speeder racing
00:56:45being attended to
00:56:46in the pits
00:56:46and it goes on as well.
00:56:48The Peugeot
00:56:49seem to be coming in
00:56:50thick and fast
00:56:51certainly more frequently
00:56:52than the Audis.
00:56:54Oh dear.
00:56:54Muscle milk's got it wrong
00:56:55yet again.
00:56:56They'd had their problems
00:56:57earlier on
00:56:58and clearly gone back out
00:56:59just hoping that everything
00:57:00was all right.
00:57:00I think it's rear suspension.
00:57:02It's possible.
00:57:03I mean he's just had
00:57:03another spin
00:57:04possibly caused from
00:57:05that accident earlier.
00:57:06He did get hit behind
00:57:07it looked like
00:57:08so that can cause problems
00:57:09that you then have to deal with
00:57:10onward through the race.
00:57:12It's hard to say
00:57:13without us seeing
00:57:13what's happened.
00:57:14You never know
00:57:14but it's definitely possible
00:57:15there's something going on
00:57:16in there.
00:57:17I was surprised Jeremy
00:57:18that they sent it out
00:57:19so early.
00:57:19It looked like a very
00:57:20rudimentary checker.
00:57:21They were kind of
00:57:22testing it on track
00:57:23which you can do
00:57:24but it's not a wise thing.
00:57:25No, they'd have given
00:57:26a good look over
00:57:27and it could
00:57:28be just something
00:57:30as simple as
00:57:30cold tyres.
00:57:32I'm sure they would have
00:57:32changed tyres
00:57:33when he came into the pits
00:57:34but there's another car
00:57:35limping around.
00:57:36It's the tent car
00:57:37making its way back.
00:57:39Yeah, it stopped
00:57:40to ride a dangerous position
00:57:41in the middle of a chicane.
00:57:42They wouldn't let it go
00:57:43initially.
00:57:44They dragged it to a safer zone
00:57:45and they just let it go.
00:57:47Damage front and rear
00:57:48though on that car.
00:57:49Oh, bits of bloody wood
00:57:50just flying off as well.
00:57:51That's dangerous
00:57:52and they've got a huge tyre up.
00:57:54And he's getting
00:57:55into a safe zone here.
00:57:56I don't think he's...
00:57:57If he tries to go any further
00:57:59they'd have a few words here.
00:58:01And what's happened
00:58:02to the front end?
00:58:02Is he...
00:58:03Oh, there's a lot of damage there.
00:58:05I mean, that bodywork
00:58:06is about to completely fall off.
00:58:07Yeah, exactly.
00:58:08Along with the front nose as well.
00:58:10Yeah, if you're limping along
00:58:12you're limping along
00:58:13in these cars
00:58:14it feels like you're hardly moving
00:58:16even if it's only 50 or 60 miles an hour
00:58:18that's enough to throw the bodywork
00:58:19all over the place.
00:58:20Look at that.
00:58:21The lizards.
00:58:21Good grief.
00:58:22Oh, what a shame.
00:58:24The 80 car has come
00:58:25an awful long way
00:58:26to join this party
00:58:27and it looks like
00:58:28it might be
00:58:28well, interrupted
00:58:29at the very best.
00:58:31You never know.
00:58:32It looks like that is
00:58:33Seth Neiman on board
00:58:34unfortunately
00:58:34and Seth
00:58:36who's been a regular driver
00:58:37in this car
00:58:37but, you know
00:58:38perhaps a bit less experienced
00:58:40than the other two
00:58:40that are in it.
00:58:41But a real shame for him
00:58:42you know
00:58:42he loves Le Mans
00:58:44and, you know
00:58:45he usually does a very good job
00:58:46so interesting to see
00:58:47what's happened there.
00:58:48Well, it is reputable
00:58:49but it's just how much time
00:58:50you've got.
00:58:51This 99 car
00:58:52had its troubles
00:58:52the back end
00:58:54was completely mashed
00:58:55in qualifying
00:58:56and they had an Arjun
00:58:59testing as well.
00:59:0466 and 80
00:59:06those are the ones
00:59:06we've seen
00:59:07and there is the collision
00:59:08between them
00:59:09and we're just getting
00:59:10the better of each other
00:59:11unfortunately
00:59:12and the barriers
00:59:13doing a great scraping job
00:59:15on that
00:59:16rather attractive
00:59:19before a few moments ago
00:59:20lizard machine.
00:59:21that's the two Americans
00:59:22in that case
00:59:23Patrick Long
00:59:24was on board
00:59:25I think
00:59:25the 76 car
00:59:28wasn't he?
00:59:28It was the performance car
00:59:30I think
00:59:30and he'd been doing
00:59:31a fantastic job
00:59:32of course
00:59:32he'd started
00:59:33at the back of the field
00:59:34was working his way forward
00:59:35and looks like
00:59:36he'd got alongside
00:59:37on the inside
00:59:38what it looked like
00:59:40on the end of that picture
00:59:41there
00:59:41we didn't of course
00:59:42see the whole incident
00:59:43take place
00:59:43but a big disaster
00:59:45for both of those two teams
00:59:46Patrick Long
00:59:47would have been
00:59:47a much quicker driver
00:59:48so it's very possible
00:59:49what he was doing
00:59:50was just trying to go
00:59:51around Seth
00:59:52and perhaps there was
00:59:53just a bit of misjudgment
00:59:53or misunderstanding
00:59:54between the two
00:59:55and unfortunately
00:59:56these sort of things
00:59:57happen sometimes
00:59:57when you have a pro
00:59:58mixing it up
00:59:59with the others
00:59:59it's a tough one
01:00:01on these circuits
01:00:02it's also what
01:00:02it's all about
01:00:03it's all about
01:00:04sports car racing
01:00:05that's right
01:00:05the IMSA performance
01:00:06guys
01:00:07they won this class
01:00:07of course
01:00:08one year ago
01:00:09and they had
01:00:09such high expectations
01:00:10coming into this weekend
01:00:11Porsche has worked
01:00:12so hard
01:00:13on that 997 RSR
01:00:15over the winter
01:00:16they've really improved
01:00:17the competitiveness
01:00:18compared to
01:00:19the dominant Ferraris
01:00:20well everywhere else
01:00:21except for here
01:00:22last year
01:00:22when of course
01:00:23the Porsche
01:00:23did come through
01:00:24but it certainly
01:00:24the Ferrari
01:00:26was the car
01:00:26to have everybody
01:00:27thought going into
01:00:28this year
01:00:28and they qualified
01:00:30on the pole
01:00:30Patrick Long
01:00:31did
01:00:31he had to start
01:00:32from the back
01:00:33as a
01:00:34as we said
01:00:35earlier on
01:00:35in the show
01:00:36but he was
01:00:36making his way
01:00:37forward
01:00:37and that is
01:00:38just
01:00:39it's kind
01:00:40of a factory
01:00:40backed team
01:00:41Patrick Long
01:00:42is a factory
01:00:43backed driver
01:00:44certainly from
01:00:44Porsche
01:00:45and they had
01:00:46very very high
01:00:46expectations
01:00:47and it's an
01:00:48absolute disaster
01:00:49so the 76 car
01:00:51in the gravel
01:00:52and a real shame
01:00:53the two major
01:00:54contestants here
01:00:55or two of them
01:00:56and it's so well
01:00:57in qualifying as well
01:00:58but the Matmut 76
01:00:59machine
01:01:00looking a bit
01:01:00second hand
01:01:01so is that
01:01:02Flying Lizard
01:01:02motorsport machine
01:01:03just getting
01:01:08information through
01:01:10as well
01:01:10that the number
01:01:11nine car
01:01:12has been called
01:01:12back in
01:01:12it's got light
01:01:13trouble
01:01:13don't forget
01:01:14that was the
01:01:14one that had
01:01:15front end damage
01:01:16after going
01:01:16into the wall
01:01:17during qualifying
01:01:18maybe they just
01:01:18didn't wire it up
01:01:19properly
01:01:20who knows
01:01:20but they've been
01:01:21warned to switch
01:01:21them on
01:01:22clearly they would
01:01:23have tried
01:01:23failed to do so
01:01:24and back in
01:01:25they come
01:01:26well this is not
01:01:27the first time
01:01:27that Peugeot
01:01:28has had problems
01:01:28with their lighting
01:01:29systems in races
01:01:30before
01:01:30it seems to be
01:01:32the way they've
01:01:32designed the cars
01:01:33if there's any
01:01:34damage at all
01:01:34to the front
01:01:35of the car
01:01:35sometimes the
01:01:36lights can then
01:01:37suffer
01:01:37and you know
01:01:38this has happened
01:01:38in at least
01:01:39two other races
01:01:40that I've seen
01:01:40them in
01:01:41so it's certainly
01:01:42not the first
01:01:42time they've
01:01:42had this issue
01:01:43but yeah
01:01:43definitely could
01:01:44have something
01:01:44to do with
01:01:44the damage
01:01:45they had before
01:01:45one of the
01:01:47Lucalf 1
01:01:47cars as well
01:01:48was brought
01:01:49in for a
01:01:50stop-go
01:01:50penalty
01:01:50we think
01:01:51it was for
01:01:52harrying
01:01:52a member
01:01:53of the
01:01:54GT2
01:01:54class
01:01:55must have
01:01:56been contact
01:01:57and just
01:01:58a manoeuvre
01:01:59that hampered
01:01:59a lower class
01:02:00vehicle
01:02:00if you are
01:02:01approaching
01:02:02somebody from
01:02:02a lower class
01:02:03you better
01:02:03make sure
01:02:04that you get
01:02:04by cleanly
01:02:05because if
01:02:06you are deemed
01:02:07to harry them
01:02:08and get into
01:02:09contact with them
01:02:10you will be
01:02:10punished
01:02:11that's exactly
01:02:11what has just
01:02:12happened to one
01:02:12of the Lucalf 1
01:02:13machines
01:02:13they're having
01:02:14a bit of a
01:02:14nightmare
01:02:15they accidentally
01:02:16called both
01:02:17cars in
01:02:17I don't know
01:02:18whether it was
01:02:18a radio thumb
01:02:19problem Jeremy
01:02:20but they called
01:02:20them in together
01:02:21and they got
01:02:22into a terrible
01:02:23mess
01:02:23if it had been
01:02:24in America
01:02:25they would have
01:02:26been called
01:02:27for it
01:02:27because wheels
01:02:28were being lost
01:02:28they were bouncing
01:02:29all around the pit
01:02:30lane
01:02:30and just that
01:02:32kind of error
01:02:32you do not want
01:02:33particularly early on
01:02:34no you don't
01:02:35you need to
01:02:35you've got to
01:02:36plan everything
01:02:36out in this
01:02:37sort of race
01:02:38it is so
01:02:38competitive now
01:02:39you can't afford
01:02:39any mistakes
01:02:40if you want
01:02:41to win the race
01:02:42so particularly
01:02:43on pit lane
01:02:44that is a bit
01:02:44embarrassing
01:02:45just one of the
01:02:47outies
01:02:47the number one
01:02:48outie in fact
01:02:48coming in
01:02:49for what is
01:02:50a regular scheduled
01:02:51stop
01:02:52as we look
01:02:52out again
01:02:54at these
01:02:54gorgeous looking
01:02:55Porsche RS
01:02:57spiders
01:02:57and a damaged
01:02:59vehicle as well
01:03:00still trying to
01:03:01make its way
01:03:01back here
01:03:02and that was
01:03:02and that was
01:03:02Lola Aston
01:03:03still limping
01:03:03around
01:03:04so he's got
01:03:04it going
01:03:04again
01:03:05and he's
01:03:06just got
01:03:06to be
01:03:06patient
01:03:07now
01:03:07he's got
01:03:08no chance
01:03:09of winning
01:03:09the petrol
01:03:11lane
01:03:12that are in
01:03:12class
01:03:12now
01:03:12I don't
01:03:13think
01:03:13it's cost him
01:03:14already
01:03:15three or four
01:03:15laps
01:03:15he's just
01:03:16got to be
01:03:16patient
01:03:17now
01:03:17they want
01:03:17to get
01:03:17that car
01:03:17back to
01:03:18the pits
01:03:18with it
01:03:20causing as
01:03:20little extra
01:03:21damage as
01:03:22possible
01:03:22hopefully
01:03:23repair it
01:03:24and then he
01:03:24can run
01:03:25on from
01:03:25here
01:03:25and it's
01:03:26really going
01:03:26to become
01:03:27a long test
01:03:27exercise
01:03:28from now
01:03:28but still
01:03:28it's a new
01:03:29exercise this
01:03:30year
01:03:30without
01:03:31Lola Aston
01:03:31Martin
01:03:31somebody else
01:03:32in trouble
01:03:33as well
01:03:33it's a shame
01:03:38for the
01:03:38quiffle
01:03:38ASM
01:03:39the Portuguese
01:03:39outfit
01:03:40Guy Smith
01:03:41winner in
01:03:422003
01:03:43and this guy
01:03:44who's on
01:03:44board
01:03:44now
01:03:44believe it
01:03:45not
01:03:45had to
01:03:46put his
01:03:46rookie
01:03:47laps in
01:03:47because of
01:03:48the hiatus
01:03:49between
01:03:49his win
01:03:50and now
01:03:51come on
01:03:52he says
01:03:52give us
01:03:53a bit of
01:03:53space
01:03:53and of
01:03:54course
01:03:54get me
01:03:55back
01:03:55there
01:03:55so I
01:03:55can
01:03:55get the
01:03:56turn
01:03:56going
01:03:57they
01:03:57have
01:03:57had
01:03:57quite a
01:03:57few
01:03:58problems
01:03:58with
01:03:58this
01:03:58practice
01:03:59I was
01:03:59speaking
01:03:59with
01:03:59Guy
01:04:00earlier
01:04:00I
01:04:00know
01:04:00they
01:04:00had
01:04:01some
01:04:01gear
01:04:01selection
01:04:01issues
01:04:02that
01:04:03was
01:04:03purely
01:04:03just
01:04:04misunderstanding
01:04:05there
01:04:05a little
01:04:06bit
01:04:06I think
01:04:06I'm going to
