00:00Hour number one in full effect right here on the early line on the Sports Grid Network.
00:04It's NFL season. We love it. The NFL is going to dominate a lot of the talk here.
00:07And also, we are going to question a lot of these football teams.
00:10How they played, how their future is going to be, and more importantly,
00:13what sort of coaching tendencies are going to come up.
00:16And we square right away with the New York Giants.
00:18So you saw a performance on Sunday afternoon.
00:20The expectations were they were supposed to lose that game.
00:22Roughly a touchdown underdogs against the Washington Commanders.
00:25Commanders are a better football team.
00:26But the vibes and the energy was a little bit higher than maybe what it should have been
00:30for the New York Giants entering into the season.
00:32Hey, really good preseason. Understand this.
00:34Remember when the Dallas Cowboys used to be good?
00:36And I know a lot of people don't ever remember the Cowboys because it's been thousands of years ago.
00:40They would routinely get pasted 0-4 in the preseason.
00:43Then go out and rip off a couple Super Bowls here because the preseason doesn't matter.
00:46And if you're buying into the preseason for the Giants, you're like,
00:49ooh, Jackson Dart looks really good.
00:51Yeah, he's playing against guys that are probably delivering for UPS and Enterprise Rent-A-Car right now.
00:55But it's okay. He looked good.
00:56Starter, week number one, was Russell Wilson.
00:59You got nothing out of him.
01:00But understand this, Joe, as I throw it to you.
01:03The New York Giants had to have a game plan coming into the season.
01:06And I'm pretty sure the game plan wasn't,
01:08I don't know if I want Jackson Dart starting week one,
01:10but week two would be a perfect time to put him in.
01:12Russell Wilson was named starter on the season.
01:14He didn't get injured.
01:15I don't think they were going to bench him after weeks one, two, or three,
01:19even how good Dart played in the preseason.
01:21There has to be a plan.
01:22And it looks like Brian Dable is sticking to that plan now, Joe.
01:26Yeah, and, Bob, I think he was going to.
01:30And I think the reason he gave as to why did it take you so long to commit,
01:34I mean, he wouldn't commit right after the game that, you know,
01:38and he was asked a whole bunch of times,
01:40are you sticking with Russell Wilson?
01:43And, you know, and they asked him, well, you know,
01:45why didn't you just tell us then?
01:46And he said, you know, listen,
01:47I like to make these kinds of decisions with a clear head.
01:51And he said, after going back and watching the tape,
01:54it wasn't like it was all Russell Wilson.
01:57I mean, he was under duress a lot in that game.
02:01I mean, he had eight carries from 44 yards.
02:04He had to throw the ball away a number of times.
02:07He was scrambling out of the pocket.
02:09I mean, that he got sacked twice.
02:11So it's not all, oh, Russell Wilson had all day
02:14and he couldn't complete passes.
02:16No, he was under duress.
02:18And if Russell Wilson was under duress,
02:20what are you going to do to a rookie quarterback here
02:22in Jackson Dart, as good as he looked in,
02:24and we know the preseason, Donnie,
02:26it ain't the regular season.
02:28So I think it's, you already made this plan.
02:32Stick with it.
02:34First couple of weeks,
02:35you got to get that offensive line, right?
02:37Otherwise, Donnie, it won't make a difference
02:39who you have under center.
02:41They're both going to be under duress.
02:43Yes.
02:44Like, I understand this with the New York Giants.
02:47Some outlets had them a three and a half
02:49team total for the season.
02:51And although, oh, well, they look good in the preseason.
02:53Let's up that to 10 wins this year.
02:55Good luck, New York Giants.
02:56It is what it is.
02:57And we'll see what happens this week
02:58against the Dallas Cowboys.
02:59In the meantime, sticking in the NFC East,
03:01Tank Bigsby over to the Philadelphia Eagles
03:03as a backup running back and a primary kick returner.
03:06He's a pretty talented running back there.
03:07The Eagles are just looking to add on
03:09and maybe has something to do with Will Shipley
03:11getting banged up a little bit
03:12with the rib injury that we have.
03:13But Bigsby goes to the Philadelphia Eagles
03:15in the backup capacity with Saquon Barkley.
03:19Yeah.
03:19And I think it's kind of a win-win, right?
03:22That's insurance for Saquon Barkley
03:25if you are the Philadelphia Eagles, right?
03:28I mean, the kid's only 24 years old.
03:30He did step in for ETN with Jacksonville
03:33when he was hurt.
03:34So he's certainly more than capable here.
03:38And they felt, hey, anything happens to Saquon,
03:41we've got somebody in the backfield.
03:43In the meantime, you already know,
03:45Jacksonville's offense, ETN Jr. is the guy.
03:49So, you know, he kind of,
03:50he was always going to be just a backup,
03:52but they found, you know, another backup,
03:55another young guy that can back up ETN.
03:57So he became expendable.
03:58They get a couple of draft picks.
04:00Everybody wins, I think, in this trade.
04:02Yes, absolutely.
04:03And by the way,
04:04I always like these stories that come out, right?
04:06Do you remember the Bills fan that, you know,
04:07was slapping helmets and ends up getting pushed here
04:09by quarterback Lamar Jackson in Buffalo?
04:12Everybody saw it on Sunday night.
04:13It went viral.
04:14I always like this.
04:14The fan who shoved Ravens wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins
04:17and then got shoved by Lamar Jackson
04:19is banned from the Bills and NFL stadiums.
04:22So we're saying that he just can't put a hat on
04:24and go to a Buffalo Bills game or any game he wants.
04:27Like if he tries to sneak into a Vegas Raiders game,
04:30they're watching him like he's on the FBI list.
04:33I always love these stories.
04:34Stop it, man.
04:35Just stop.
04:37Oh, Donnie.
04:38Then you just, you don't believe in face recognition, do you?
04:42Because I can assure you.
04:44Oh, yes, they do.
04:46They absolutely do.
04:49They will find that guy in a heartbeat.
04:53And by the way, why would you want to go to Vegas?
04:55You want to talk about facial red?
04:56They won't let you step in a casino.
04:58You know, they won't let you step anywhere in there
05:00if you're banned in an NFL arena.
05:03No way.
05:03Like you put my phone up to my face,
05:05supposed to recognize me.
05:06I put a hat on.
05:07My phone has no idea if it's Don, you know,
05:10Don, Donnie, Donald, Derrick on my phone.
05:12No idea.
05:13Kid, put a hat on.
05:14Enjoy your Buffalo Bills.
05:16You could probably sit right back in the first row
05:17and slap the helmets.
05:18They'd never know.
05:19We're NFL Talk next on The Early Live.
05:21The NFL never stops here.
05:23It just doesn't.
05:24It's 365.
05:25It's 24-7.
05:26And away you go.
05:27We had so much hype and so much excitement, Joe,
05:31talking about week number one.
05:33Week number one is already done.
05:34And as I've said it many times, enjoy this.
05:36We're heading into week number two.
05:38You will start to talk about weeks 14, 15, and 16
05:40before you can know it.
05:42Playoffs, NFC, AFC championship games, Super Bowl.
05:45Oh, no.
05:46What are we going to do for March, April, May, June, and July
05:48as we wait for week number one again?
05:50But week number two is already up on some of the odds markets here.
05:53Some key games this week.
05:55The Philadelphia Eagles, a favorite against Kansas City.
05:57Take a look at the Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the Seattle Seahawks.
06:01Oh, look at that.
06:01DK Metcalf is going home.
06:03The San Francisco 49ers with a healthy advantage in the point spread
06:07against New Orleans.
06:08But how's that going to factor in with no George Kittle now?
06:10And also questions about Brock Purdy.
06:12Some good weekend games here coming up.
06:15Can't wait for it.
06:15And again, Joe, it's already week two.
06:18It doesn't stop.
06:19The train won't stop.
06:20Yeah, and a couple of, you know, some trends to keep an eye on here
06:24from week one is that we saw the, I believe, 11 and three straight up
06:31is what favorites did this week here in the NFL.
06:35You had a couple of pick-em games with Tampa and Atlanta
06:38and Minnesota and Chicago last night.
06:40But only seven and seven against the number were the favorites.
06:44It's home teams, eight and seven straight up, nine and six against the number.
06:48And of course, you had the neutral site game with Kansas City and the charges.
06:51But unders were the story, Donnie.
06:5312 and four to the under this week here in the NFL.
06:58So what will we get in week two?
07:00More defensive-driven games?
07:03How much will the numbers actually drop and adjust here with the sports books?
07:08We're going to have to see.
07:09If you thought week number one was tough, your mind is going to play tricks on you in week number two
07:14because the old adage goes, you were never as good as you looked in week number one.
07:17You were never as bad as you looked in week number one.
07:19And you have to sort of level that out.
07:21Week number three, you start to find everything.
07:23Like, okay, this team is decent.
07:25This team is not so good.
07:26This team likes to use a quarterback in this fashion.
07:27Oh, this running back is now the starting running back.
07:30And this wide receiver is starting to move up the depth charts here.
07:32Keep an eye on that this week.
07:33But you know what?
07:34Typically, Joe, in the NFL, they give a slop for Thursday.
07:37But we're so excited for the NFL that it's, oh, the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns.
07:41Ooh, get excited for that.
07:42Not this week.
07:44They're giving us the Washington Commanders on the road against the Green Bay Packers.
07:48As it sits now, a three and a half point favorite for the Packers.
07:51And a total, let's list it at 48 and a half at most outlets.
07:54You saw week number one, Washington with a double-digit victory
07:57over the New York Giants.
07:58And then the Green Bay Packers at home, a double-digit victory over
08:01the hated division rivals, the Detroit Lions.
08:05Home field advantage in Green Bay.
08:06What are we thinking about that three and a half point spread
08:08as a favorite towards Green Bay?
08:11Well, it's interesting.
08:12You're right.
08:12Because both these teams had double-digit wins, right, in game one.
08:17But I could, let's be honest here, right?
08:20I mean, beating Detroit the way they beat Detroit
08:23is way more impressive for Green Bay than Washington beating the Giants
08:28the way they did, which didn't particularly look great offensively
08:33like maybe everyone thought they were going to be.
08:35But, I mean, Green Bay looked like they were in mid-season form.
08:40Jordan Love was just ripped apart that defense early on in that game.
08:46He was hitting receivers all over the place.
08:48The defense was really, really good against some of the big explosive guys
08:54on the Lions offense.
08:55So, the commanders were workmen-like.
08:57They did what they were supposed to do.
08:59And sometimes I don't think we look at that and give it enough credit.
09:02But on a short week here, I don't know.
09:05I think you've got to give the advantage to Jordan Love
09:08and the offense of Green Bay.
09:11You know, Parsons played sparingly.
09:13You know, how much more will we see him this week?
09:16I kind of like the Packers at home to get it done on a short week.
09:20Yeah, if I like the Packers last week, which I did against the Detroit Lions,
09:23I'm going to like them against Washington.
09:25But you are correct in one thing that you said.
09:27It's the sign of a very good coaching staff
09:28and at least a coaching staff that understands how to win football games.
09:31You see a dead duck out there in the New York Giants.
09:34You don't need to throw it around late in the fourth quarter.
09:36You don't need to throw it around the third quarter.
09:37Just run the clock down here.
09:39Get your first downs.
09:40Don't make mistakes and you win the football game comfortably.
09:43And that's exactly what Washington did.
09:44We'll find out how they do in Green Bay.
09:46Pittsburgh and Seattle.
09:47You know, take a look at this game.
09:48Darnold versus Rodgers.
09:49Aaron Rodgers, a very good week, number one,
09:51in a conquering hero role, going back to New York and getting a victory.
09:55Sam Darnold had a win on the tips of his fingers,
09:58but let it slip away because one of his offensive linemen ran into him
10:02and he dropped the football and the San Francisco 49ers won.
10:05This game's in Pittsburgh, roughly favored by two and a half to three points,
10:08depending on where you're shopping, and a lower total, Joe.
10:11Thirty-nine and a half to forty and a half, once again,
10:13depending where you're shopping at this week.
10:15Rodgers comes home to the Steelers, a conquering hero there as well.
10:19I actually like the Steelers again this week.
10:20I do.
10:21Yeah, this number opened up at three, so we're already starting to see, right,
10:25under the key number now at two and a half.
10:29And, listen, Seattle, you know, we covered that game on In Game Live on Sunday
10:34here on the Sports Grid Network, and watching that game, and I said,
10:37wow, this defense of Seattle is no joke.
10:41But the offense, don't forget, they purposely,
10:44McDonald purposely went out and got Sam Darnold, didn't want Geno Smith,
10:49and he, you know, he got a new offensive coordinator.
10:51Why?
10:52Because he thought they threw the ball way too much a year ago with Geno Smith.
10:56So, the emphasis was going to be defense and running the ball.
11:00Well, that's great, except you only ran for about 3.2 yards a carry.
11:04And, oh, yeah, Sam Darnold, you had him only throw for 150 yards,
11:08and you lost at home to a very winnable game against the 49ers.
11:13So, to me, something has got to give there.
11:15You can't be a running football team and carry the ball for just 3.2 yards
11:21against anybody.
11:23And the Pittsburgh Steelers are not going to give up what they gave up on the
11:26ground to the Jets here.
11:27They will make the adjustments.
11:29I don't know how much the adjustments, but I'll tell you this,
11:32that's a good defense of Seattle.
11:34I think Aaron Rodgers keeps getting hit like he did against the Jets.
11:38I wouldn't be looking at an over in this game.
11:41Yeah, see what happens out there at Akershire Stadium this Sunday.
11:45Also, another game taking place at Sunday at 1 o'clock.
11:47Same place.
11:48New York Jets home once again, but they're going to take on the Buffalo Bills.
11:51You saw that miracle comeback on Sunday night football.
11:54The Bills here laying a touchdown approximately just about every book.
11:57Six and a half, I think, at BetMGM now, but primarily sevens.
12:00And a total that's listed at 45 and a half.
12:03Josh Allen, emotional victory on Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens.
12:06The Jets feel like they let one slip away against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
12:10Getting a touchdown in the division at home early in the season, Joe.
12:13Yeah, and the Bills have owned the Jets.
12:19Let's be realistic here.
12:20I mean, I'm shocked this opened up the way it did.
12:23I mean, this will be an interesting test for the Jets, right,
12:29and this new regime and new era.
12:31What kind of bounce-back effort do we get?
12:33I can tell you this.
12:34The Bills' defense, when they needed to, clamped down.
12:39But they kind of got gashed a lot in that game,
12:42especially on the ground.
12:43If the Jets play keep-away,
12:46it'll be interesting to see this game maybe closer than the market thinks.
12:51But right now, I mean, it's –
12:53are you stepping in front of the Bills' train?
12:55Not against the Jets.
12:56I mean, my goodness, the Jets have been crushed by the Bills over the years.
13:00See what happens.
13:01Getting a tutty at home and the Jets starting 0-2.
13:03I mean, not really a huge surprise.
13:05Everybody probably thought that was more the case,
13:07and it looks like it might be.
13:08How about this one?
13:09We're going down to Miami.
13:11It's the New England Patriots, who didn't have a very good performance,
13:13to say the least, against the Vegas Raiders.
13:16Now the Miami Dolphins are at home.
13:17They were horrendous against the Indianapolis Colts.
13:20They open up as a short favorite now at minus 1.5.
13:23By the way, the opening line at FanDuel was a minus 2.5,
13:26so the buybacks are already coming in.
13:2843.5 as a total in this game.
13:30Once again, the powder keg that is the Miami Dolphins.
13:33If they have another bad performance, I don't know where we go,
13:36because this team should have a reality show on what's going to take place
13:40over the next couple weeks if they start 0-2,
13:42which two opponents you probably thought they should be 2-0 against.
13:47Yeah.
13:47I mean, it's horrific down here, Donnie.
13:50Now I'm hearing that the thought is two of them might have had a concussion
13:55during that game after getting hit early on,
13:59and obviously we know what a concern that is,
14:02so I would definitely keep an eye out about that.
14:06But listen, Miami didn't show up in any way, shape, or form.
14:10This line has begun to drop as it is.
14:12I would not be shocked if this is a pick-em,
14:15maybe even a slight favorite for New England when it kicks off on Sunday.
14:21This team, I mean, I don't know what to think of Miami,
14:23but that was the even worse performance that could possibly have been
14:27where they had no-showed against the Colts.
14:29So I don't think they were a very good football team
14:30with Daniel Jones in a dome.
14:32Like, oh, well, it was outdoors.
14:33It was freezing cold.
14:34The wind was whipping around.
14:35No, it wasn't.
14:36You were in a dome in September.
14:38Good luck this weekend against the New England Patriots.
14:40More NFL Week No. 2 conversations coming up next.
14:45I want Thursday night to be here right now.
14:47I want Week 2 of the NFL already underway.
14:50I want Washington and I want Green Bay on my television screen
14:53so I can sit back with the popcorn, relax, bet, have some fun,
14:56and hopefully win some money.
14:58But there's a lot of games in Week No. 2,
14:59and some things that we love, Joe, early in the NFL season are
15:02you don't have any bye weeks.
15:04Everybody plays every week,
15:05which includes a doubleheader this weekend on Monday Night Football.
15:09Love that.
15:10A 7 o'clock game and then a 10 o'clock game.
15:13Man, talking about being up late at that point.
15:15My goodness, it's going to be a tough early line that next morning.
15:17But I'll tell you what, it'll be a tough early line
15:19for the San Francisco 49ers, Joe.
15:21Opening number this weekend against the Saints.
15:23They should kill them.
15:23It's 7 1⁄2.
15:24Uh-oh, we're now looking at 4 1⁄2s across the board.
15:27What happened here?
15:28Well, what happened is the injury bug continues to bite the 49ers.
15:32Adam Schefter sent out a tweet yesterday.
15:34Brock Purdy has a left shoulder and toe injury
15:36that make him uncertain for Sunday's game in New Orleans.
15:40Kyle Shanahan said the team will see how the practice goes.
15:42If Purdy cannot play, 49ers backup Mac Jones will be in line to start.
15:47It never ends with the Niners here.
15:49This is an easily winnable game for them,
15:51but not so easy if you show up, Joe, without your starting quarterback.
15:56Yeah.
15:57Yeah.
15:57I, uh, it's funny, too, because this line opened up, like you mentioned,
16:01much higher than it is, but my goodness, uh, no Brock Purdy,
16:05and you got to deal with Mac Jones.
16:07So the question is, really, in this game,
16:09is did we see enough hope with New Orleans?
16:14Uh, because they did have their chances against Arizona, by the way,
16:18at home, Donnie, to win that game.
16:20So I don't know.
16:21Do we think that maybe they can be a little bit more competitive,
16:25a little bit better than we give them credit for?
16:27Are they good enough to hang and late and, and beat, uh,
16:31Mac Jones here?
16:32Are the 49ers really offensively just going to run all over him?
16:36Uh, I think that's a big question mark here,
16:38but I wouldn't do anything until you get a better idea on what Brock Purdy's
16:42injury is and what's happening with him.
16:44Exactly.
16:45Cause that you are always a beatable team on the road to start with.
16:48And you're even more of a beatable team.
16:50You show up without your best tight end.
16:51And also more importantly, without your quarterback in that game,
16:54something to keep an eye on.
16:55We'll see where that line ends up by the time we get to kick off on Sunday
16:58afternoon at one o'clock,
16:59another game that's going to start on Sunday afternoon.
17:02That's Cleveland and Baltimore.
17:03This is an interesting one.
17:05Cleveland should have won week number one against the Cincinnati Bengals.
17:08Everybody's love child out there, right?
17:10But then the Baltimore Ravens had an easy victory over the Buffalo Bills,
17:15which they let slip away in the fourth quarter.
17:17I still can't believe it happened, but now you're seeing, oh,
17:20they can't lose two in a row.
17:21They're going to be angry.
17:22Opening number 12 and a half.
17:23Some outlets showing 11 and a half,
17:25but primarily a 12 and a half are across the board and a 45 and a half.
17:29Cleveland is really getting disrespected in this spot.
17:31I think obviously Baltimore is better.
17:33That's why they're favored.
17:34But are we overreacting to like,
17:36they talking about the Ravens are just going to be super angry.
17:39And this is a 33 to six type of ball game.
17:43Yeah.
17:43I mean, listen, it looked like,
17:45it looked like Baltimore was just going to steamroll everyone and anybody
17:49they played this year.
17:51Right.
17:51And then something interesting happened.
17:53Josh Allen and a fourth quarter and a defense that fell off a cliff there
17:58for Baltimore.
17:59And when it comes to the Browns, listen,
18:01Flacco did everything he could in that game to win it.
18:04Right.
18:05Yes.
18:05He had two interceptions.
18:06Both were off the hands of receivers for the Browns.
18:11He had drop passes.
18:13They had missed field goals.
18:15You know, the typical things,
18:16but they were very much in that game and they are very much more competitive,
18:21I think, than what people think.
18:22And it's a divisional rivalry.
18:24Right.
18:25So I think this is a bit of an overreaction.
18:28Everyone's expecting bounce back, but to your point, Donnie, listen,
18:31you can win this game.
18:32Yeah.
18:32Are you going to win it by three scores?
18:34I don't think so here.
18:36I got an issue with this next game too.
18:38One o'clock start short work week here for the Chicago bears going on the road
18:42to take on Detroit and Detroit certainly embarrassed with their performance in
18:46green Bay at home.
18:47Now sold that crowd.
18:48Caleb Williams on the road.
18:49We're only talking about a four and a half point spread,
18:51which is an eye grabber because for me, I look right off the bat and go,
18:54Oh, I really want to take Detroit.
18:56But is that a microcosm of week number one without Ben Johnson?
18:59It just didn't work out all that well.
19:00Don't worry.
19:00We'll snap back.
19:01Or is that an offense that we're looking at that just doesn't have the right
19:03play calls at the right time.
19:05But I looked at Chicago last night.
19:07It doesn't feel like a team that I want to back,
19:08even though they entered into the fourth quarters, you know, Joe,
19:1117 to six and just let that game slip away early in the week.
19:14I'm just going Detroit here.
19:16I think it makes sense, but could change later in the week for me.
19:19Yeah, I think, listen,
19:20they showed flashes of what that offense is capable of Detroit,
19:25but they were behind the eight ball quickly in that game.
19:28They had to play catch up.
19:30They never really had an opportunity to be able to establish any sort of
19:33ground game in there.
19:35And it ultimately ended up costing them.
19:37The good thing for Detroit though, is that that defense,
19:41and I thought that defense would be way better this year with a healthy
19:44Aiden Hutchinson and company.
19:46And yes, I think they'll have more success defensively.
19:50They will keep this close enough to eventually allow the offense of Detroit
19:55to get it done and eventually pull away.
19:58Got to slip this next one in here, Philadelphia and Kansas City.
20:01This is the game of the week here.
20:02425 national stage, Patrick Mahomes,
20:04Jalen Hurts rematch of the Superbowl last year with the Eagles.
20:07Absolutely dominated the Chiefs favorites right now,
20:10the Philadelphia Eagles, 90 degree temperatures expected in Arrowhead this weekend,
20:14light winds and no precipitation.
20:15So it should be a good day for football and a hot one here.
20:19What are we thinking about the Birds rematch with the Chiefs?
20:23Yeah.
20:23Well, I mean, I guess Andy Reid and company on a bounce back spot at home is always dangerous,
20:31but no Rasheed Rice, right?
20:34So what are we going to get now that you, you know, Kelsey was nice enough to take out
20:39the only other deep threat they had there and were the, oh yeah, they still have Hollywood Brown
20:44who had what, 16 targets in that game because they didn't have anybody else that could actually
20:48stretch the field.
20:49So this could be a problem for the Chiefs early and often, but it's not like Philadelphia
20:56was in mid-season form in their game against Dallas either there, Donnie.
21:01So this could be a little sloppier affair than people are used to.
21:06It could be here and also understand this.
21:09I have my tinfoil hat on.
21:10I have my conspiracy theories ready.
21:12And you know what's going to happen?
21:13Travis Kelsey is going to tell his fiance, Taylor Swift,
21:16I need you to make a phone call to Roger Goodell and tell him the only way I'm performing
21:20in the Superbowl is if the Kansas City Chiefs make it to the Superbowl.
21:23The phone lines will ring.
21:25The bat phones will pick up.
21:26They will get all the help they can throughout the majority of the season.
21:29I'm actually surprised Jalen Carter didn't get suspended.
21:31Looks like he's just going to get fined for this one, but two top wide receivers down
21:35on a non-explosive offense.
21:37That's what I'm looking forward to see what the Chiefs can do.
21:39But how about that conspiracy theory, right, Joe?
21:41Taylor Swift says, I'm only playing the Superbowl if the Chiefs get in there.
21:44Bam, 16 and one Chiefs.
21:46Here we go.
21:47Yeah, I mean, it's stranger things about while stranger conspiracy theories have happened
21:52there, Donnie.
21:53But I just don't know that, you know, you are really short on playmakers if you're the Chiefs
22:00here.
22:01So this defense better figure it out quickly.
22:04Otherwise, it's going to be a long afternoon.
22:06What a night it was in Chicago.
22:08A lot of debuts.
22:09Ben Johnson, new offensive coordinator slash head coach for Caleb Williams here.
22:13Looked like it was going to be a victory and a winning night for the Chicago Bears that
22:17went up in smoke.
22:18JJ McCarthy making his first debut here regular season in year number two for the Minnesota
22:23Vikings.
22:24An impressive fourth quarter, which he accounted for three touchdowns.
22:27But I don't really care about the Minnesota Vikings right now.
22:30I want to focus on the Chicago Bears.
22:31We have some comments here for Ben Johnson reflecting on the loss and way to start the
22:36season there for us.
22:39You know, we just have a 17 to six lead and then and then see it go the way it did there
22:46in the fourth quarter.
22:48You know, we said going into week one that the team that would make the least number of
22:52mistakes would win the game.
22:53And unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of that.
22:55We made too many there late in the game.
22:59Myself included.
22:59There were a number of things that I could have done better, a number of things that
23:04a number of guys could have done better.
23:06When you look down at the stat sheet and you see 12 penalties, that's got to get cleaned
23:11up in a hurry.
23:12And yet, we've been saying that all training camp as well.
23:14So the defense did a really good job up until the very end.
23:20You know, that fourth quarter, things got away from us a little bit.
23:23But up until then, they kept us in that ballgame.
23:26Offense was stalling out.
23:27Some good, some bad.
23:30I thought Caleb played well to start the game for the most part, finding completions.
23:35No one's going to feel sorry for us.
23:37It's going to be a quick turnaround here to get going for next Sunday in Detroit, our first
23:42road game.
23:43And so, we've got to turn the page here quickly.
23:47Ben Johnson is right about one thing.
23:49It is a quick turnaround.
23:50You open up at home on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings.
23:53You want to win that division?
23:54You've got to win that game.
23:55They didn't.
23:55Now they go on the road.
23:56Another divisional opponent.
23:58And the worst case scenario for them is Detroit got embarrassed in week number one, now coming
24:02home.
24:02They know they have to win this game.
24:04If the Chicago Bears open up this season at 0-2, Joe, a lot of teams don't recover and make
24:09the playoffs from that.
24:10I'm not saying they can't play good football the rest of the way, but you lose to Detroit
24:14and go 0-2, not only on the season, but in your own division, I don't think you can climb
24:18out of that.
24:20No, I don't think you can.
24:22Now, they were a little banged up yesterday in the secondary, this Bears defense, but there's
24:27no excuse for them to have melted the way they did there in the fourth quarter.
24:33But I think, listen, Coach was right.
24:35127 yards and penalties.
24:37And the fact that that was a problem in the preseason and it carries over into game one,
24:43Donnie, that's a coaching problem here.
24:46Also, where was Caleb Williams?
24:48We saw J.J.
24:49McCarthy turning around in the fourth quarter, right, as a young quarterback.
24:54Where was Williams when it mattered the most in the fourth quarter here?
24:59Um, I think what you see sometimes is what you get.
25:03I don't think the coach, whoever you bring in with Chicago, they're still going to have
25:08some issues at that quarterback position moving forward.
25:10And also understand this too.
25:13You had Jared Goff and he had weapons at every position in Detroit, but Jared Goff was a
25:16pure pocket passer.
25:17Like if you protect him, which the Lions had a very good offensive line and he could stand
25:21and deliver in the pocket.
25:22You didn't get that from Caleb Williams.
25:23I thought he bailed out of the pocket a lot, which usually when you have legs and you're a
25:28young player in the NFL that you feel like you can make better moves outside the pocket
25:31and extend plays.
25:32That's one thing.
25:32But also the NFL is built on timing.
25:34Everybody's good on defense.
25:35You have to throw one, two, three, hit that back foot, get that football out.
25:39Not one, two, three.
25:40Let me see what's going on.
25:41Let me run outside the pocket.
25:43Way too much street ball yesterday from Caleb Williams for me.
25:46Maybe he gets that figured out, but Ben Johnson all understand this too.
25:49Like that's a big divisional game, but Ben Johnson is going home to Detroit in that next football
25:54game, Joe.
25:55How big is that for him where he doesn't want to get embarrassed and lose, but my goodness,
25:59there's going to be a lot of energy and a lot of feelings in that building on Sunday.
26:02Yeah, no, there certainly, there certainly is here and it's going to be a tough spot.
26:08They're going to need to get a little healthier on that defensive side.
26:12They're going to need their stud quarterback Johnson before it's all said and done.
26:16But listen, Detroit's going through some issues as well.
26:19And as crazy as it may seem, still feels like maybe both teams and their defenses are ahead
26:26of the offenses here at this point.
26:28Now the Chicago bears have an interesting, you know, marriage with the city, let's say
26:33with soldier feel like, Hey, we're going to put in money for the stadium, but the bears
26:37don't actually play for the field itself.
26:38It's maintained by the city of Chicago, notorious for decades of having terrible playing surfaces.
26:44And we might thought we would have saw one last night.
26:46The deal really wasn't an issue, but now the issue is the Chicago bears going, okay,
26:50we renovated the stadium.
26:51I think back in 2023, 20 years is up.
26:54We want a new stadium.
26:55We could stay here, renovate this, or we can move out to Arlington Heights, which is
26:58just outside the city limits of Chicago.
27:01I don't care where the bears move their football team, but there's just something about Joe
27:05being in Chicago, windy city temperatures that are always cool.
27:10That's part of the bears mystique here.
27:12And now they say they want to build a dome, which would take away that mystique.
27:15Is it better for the fans?
27:16I mean, to get a warmer environment here.
27:18Is it better for a quarterback saying, well, I don't want to play in cold weather.
27:20Yes, but the bears, man, it's just like that whole NFC North, like you're going to have
27:25now Detroit in a dome.
27:27You're going to have Minnesota in a dome.
27:28You're going to have the bears in a dome.
27:30And then sooner than later, Hey, they'll never get rid of Yankee stadium.
27:33They did.
27:34They knocked that thing down and build a terrible Yankee stadium part two in New York.
27:38One thing we're waiting on now is like a new Fenway or a new Wrigley field.
27:41How can we do this in Chicago?
27:42Because then it lends us up to believe that Lambeau field in 10 years, they'll have a dome
27:47as well.
27:48Come on, man.
27:49Yeah, I, you know, listen, it can't be about the ticket sales, right?
27:54Because here's the thing.
27:56If you put a winning product on the field with the bears, they will come.
28:02The fans will pack that place out.
28:04They'll always sell out.
28:07I mean, so just invest that money into actually, I don't know, building the offensive line that
28:13can protect your quarterback.
28:15How's that?
28:16Why don't we start there?
28:17I don't understand where is the home field advantage that you get with Chicago, right?
28:23Having those games there when West Coast teams come in or whatever.
28:27I mean, it's yeah, I don't get it, but I'm sure just follow the money and you'll have a
28:33pretty good explanation as to why they're looking at it.
28:35Yeah.
28:36Yeah.
28:36Follow the money on this too.
28:37When they talk about we want to get a Super Bowl here, understand this NFL, there should
28:41be a rotation of like four cities all in warm weather.
28:44The Eagles won a Super Bowl in Minnesota.
28:45It was horrendous.
28:47You couldn't even go outside that week.
28:49Who wants to party there?
28:50When Jacksonville gets Super Bowl, nobody wants to go there.
28:52Detroit got a Super Bowl.
28:54What is there to do in Detroit?
28:55Go downtown and have a Little Caesars pizza and head back to your room at that point?
28:59Nobody wants a Super Bowl in Chicago, not a single person.
29:03So don't tell me you want to build this dome stadium in hopes to get a Super Bowl that nobody
29:07will want to go to because it's freezing cold in February in Chicago.
29:12Enough said at that point right now.
29:14I'm done with this.
29:14Exactly.
29:15Look at the new Lambeau field in a dome in 2035.
29:18Great.
29:18Green Bay wants a Super Bowl.
29:20Put it in a dome.
29:21Nonsense at this point right now.
29:23I'm getting upset, but I want to talk more NFL.
29:25Don't build a dome Chicago.
29:27Don't do it, please.
29:28We're going to talk Major League Baseball in just a few segments here.
29:31A lot of good stuff on the cards.
29:32Still, you can make some money in the month of September.
29:35Don't you dare turn your back on that Major League Baseball season.
29:38But we do have to bring that attention to week number two action in the NFL and those
29:42opening lines, which does include a Sunday night football game.
29:45How about all the primetime work here right now here for the Minnesota Vikings?
29:49You saw them last night on Monday Night Football pick up a victory.
29:51Now to be on Sunday Night Football as 1-0 victors here heading back home.
29:56Skull, skull, skull as a favorite between four and a half to five and a half over the Atlanta
30:02Falcons and Michael Pennix.
30:04Michael Pennix and the crew had a tough, hard-fought loss at home to Tampa Bay.
30:09Make some field goals.
30:10Make some better plays.
30:11Win a football game.
30:12They couldn't do that.
30:13But Pennix and McCarthy, two younger quarterbacks in the NFL, going to tee it up for a little
30:17Sunday night football action, Joe.
30:19Yeah, well, this is going to be interesting, right?
30:22Because we, two dome teams, ironically enough, Donnie, they're playing in Minnesota.
30:29And I thought, listen, Pennix looked the part.
30:32He really did.
30:33He just didn't get a lot of help, certainly on the defensive side of the ball for Atlanta,
30:37which is ironic given the fact that they spent all their entire offseason trying to build
30:42up the defensive side and, yeah, didn't work against Baker Mayfield.
30:48You know, I look at this matchup where I've got Brian Flores, the D.C. of Minnesota, and
30:55a young quarterback in Atlanta.
30:57Yeah, something tells me it could be a long day for Atlanta and Pennix against this defense
31:03of Minnesota.
31:05Yeah, Minnesota's defense looks good.
31:06There's no doubt about it.
31:07That place is a tough place to play because it is a dome and it is really loud.
31:10They'll be excited with Minnesota having that comeback victory on Monday night, but still
31:14a quarterback in J.J. McCarthy, how much of that momentum can he carry over from that
31:18big fourth quarter?
31:19We'll certainly find out.
31:20NFL doubleheader on Monday night football, one at seven o'clock, that's Tampa Bay and
31:26Houston, one at 10 o'clock.
31:27That is the Chargers versus the Raiders here.
31:30If we focus on game number one, Houston, tough loss to the Los Angeles Rams, hard fall battle,
31:36low scoring, good defensive.
31:38And then you take a look at Tampa Bay.
31:39Needed to make some plays.
31:40Ibuka with two touchdowns here.
31:42The young rookie wide receiver, the favorite, the Houston Texans at minus two and a half.
31:46This game, again, takes place on Monday night football, the first game of a doubleheader
31:49and a total of 43 and a half.
31:52Tampa, Houston, what gives?
31:55Yeah, I mean, listen, Houston defensively, great showing there on the road against the Rams,
32:03a place which we all know there's not really a great home field advantage there.
32:08But there's still something not right about this offense of Houston there, Donnie.
32:14I mean, Stroud looked good at parts, but then he didn't.
32:18The adjustments they were making with the Rams and that young defense, he just, he looked
32:24rattled again.
32:25I'm still not buying Stroud here.
32:27I think there could be some issues, especially with a lack of any sort of running game or
32:33downfield capability.
32:35I think Houston needs, needs to win this game.
32:39But I think it's going to come down to, you know, one of those last minute field goal types
32:44of situations.
32:45And we all know kicking is for losers.
32:47Yeah, squaring up that 43 and a half here.
32:50So many professional kickers here, had terrible weeks here making layup field goals.
32:54It is what it is at this point.
32:55Maybe that college epidemic is creeping in now to the NFL.
32:59Game number two of that doubleheader on Monday night football, the Los Angeles Chargers,
33:03who had a great week one victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
33:06Now going to take on the Vegas Raiders, went on the road and handled their business in New
33:09England.
33:10A 10 o'clock start live from Vegas.
33:12The favorites here, the Chargers, anywhere between three and three and a half, depending where
33:16you're shopping at in a total that's listed at 46 and a half.
33:20Good football.
33:20Two teams in the West, both one and oh.
33:24Yeah, no, I mean, outstanding, you know, win for the Raiders, but they did it never easy
33:29on the road at Foxborough.
33:32Defense showed up.
33:33And of course, you know, look at the stat line of Geno Smith, Donnie, right?
33:37We see this all the time from him.
33:39He beats up on bad teams, gains all of these yards, everything looks great.
33:44And then he plays an actual real defense and a real team.
33:47And all of a sudden, you know, his numbers aren't as good here.
33:51I think the Chargers will handle business in this game.
33:54I'm kind of, I think they'll do it by more than the three as well, too, when it's all
33:59said and done.
34:00Week three, Joe, I love in the NFL.
34:02That's when I really dip my toes in the water.
34:04Having fun looking at some prop bets, you know, win some, lose some at this point.
34:08How do you approach week number two?
34:09What can you give the people for a little tidbit on how to approach it by going like, you know
34:13what, week one could have been a mirage on some of these spots.
34:17Don't overreact.
34:19Week two is a fantastic contrarian week in the NFL.
34:24Watch the public go over the top and over or underreact to a lot of situations this week
34:31and then figure out which those games are, highlight them, or we'll tell you all week
34:36long here and look to go the other way.
34:39When the public goes left in week two, we're going to go right.
34:42Where does the time go?
34:44All the energy, all the impact, all the statistics, all the handicaps.
34:48We wind up on the shelf with a perfect two-hour show.
34:52That's the way we like to get down.
34:53As we always say, we start the table.
34:55Like we, you know, the fork, the knife, the plate, and away you go in the rest of your
35:00sports grid day.
35:00But this is the time of our program that we love to reach out to the people for our
35:04Fade the Public Poll.
35:13Uh-oh, we're getting ahead of ourselves here.
35:15Most people wanted to cut J.J.
35:16McCarthy before the fourth quarter began yesterday.
35:18Glad you didn't in Minnesota because he accounted for three touchdowns.
35:22Two in the air, one on the ground.
35:23They get a victory, and away they go on their season.
35:25So we asked you at SportsGrid, our Fade the Public Poll, the simple question was, will
35:29J.J.
35:29McCarthy lead the Vikings to a playoff berth this season?
35:32Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
35:34One game performance in a tough division.
35:37I voted no, Joe, and so did 55% of the other voters here said the same thing.
35:44Do you agree or disagree that they're going to make the playoffs this year?
35:47Yeah, well, it's, uh, wasn't impressed with Detroit.
35:52So that's a, uh, that's a, uh, obviously Chicago wasn't very good.
35:57So it's really Green Bay and Minnesota going to do some, uh, is going to battle here.
36:02But ultimately, I think there are going to be more growing pains here with, uh, you know,
36:08with him under center.
36:09I love the coaching that defense is going to keep them in games.
36:13I would tend to think that, yeah, while there will be some moments where he looks horrific,
36:19he's shown you that, yeah, you can't count them out here.
36:23And I love that defense of Minnesota.
36:25Yeah, I'm going to say yes, Donnie.
36:27I think he can absolutely good defense, defense travels, smart, offensive minded head coach
36:34and a kid that's a gamer.
