Transcript
00:00Chairman Comer, I welcome your testimony. Thank you, Dr. Fox and Mr. McGovern. Today,
00:06the Oversight Committee met with survivors of the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
00:13Their stories are heartbreaking. What they have suffered and endured should never have happened
00:18and is sickening. They were not only victims of crimes, but were betrayed by their own government.
00:25Since 1996, let me repeat that, since 1996, the FBI has ignored tips. Then U.S. attorneys gave Epstein
00:38a sweetheart deal to avoid significant jail time. The government simply disregarded the law and ignored
00:46the victims of these crimes. It was and is unacceptable. For the past six weeks, the House
00:55Oversight Committee has worked tirelessly to request documents and testimony regarding Epstein
00:59and Maxwell. We have subpoenaed Maxwell for a deposition, DOJ for documents, 10 former federal
01:06officials for depositions, the Epstein estate for documents, and agreed to a transcribed interview
01:12with Alex Acosta. This is the most thorough investigation into Epstein and Maxwell to date,
01:20and we are getting results. We have already deposed former Attorney General Bill Barr. The Department
01:28of Justice provided nearly 34,000 pages of documents and will produce more, which are being made public
01:37as we speak. When I conclude, when we conclude this, all those documents should be online unless we have a
01:43crash or something with the computer. The estate will begin producing documents September the 8th.
01:50That's the Epstein estate. The committee is working at an unprecedented pace and doing the work as it is
01:57supposed to be done. What we heard today is that these survivors support these efforts and support
02:02transparency and accountability, goals we all share. This resolution furthers those goals. It supports our
02:10work. It supports the release of documents, and most importantly, it achieves what the survivors want.
02:17There is no question that Epstein and Maxwell were terrible criminals. With your support and the support of
02:23the House, we can continue to do the work to provide closure and justice to the hundreds of victims.
02:30I urge support of this resolution, and I welcome your questions. Madam Chair, I yield back, and thank you for
02:36being in that discussion today as well. Thank you, Mr.
