00:00Back to the Future couldn't be made today, but maybe not for the reasons you think.
00:04It's been 40 years since the iconic sci-fi comedy came out,
00:07and co-writer Bob Gale and star Leah Thompson spoke with The Guardian about the film's legacy.
00:11And they argued that the movie just couldn't be made today, for a couple of reasons.
00:15Thompson pointed out that if you made Back to the Future in 2025, and they went back 30 years,
00:19it would be 1995, and nothing would look that different.
00:22The phones would be different, but it wouldn't be like the strange difference between the 80s and the 50s,
00:26and how different the world was.
00:28I mean, she makes a good point. Would dial-up modems and the baffling popularity of the Macarena
00:32be as big a shock to a teenager today as the squeaky-clean 1950s were to Marty?
00:37Probably not. But Gale had a slightly different explanation for why Back to the Future wouldn't fly in 2025.
00:42He said,
00:43We'd go into the studio, and they'd say,
00:44What's the deal with this relationship between Marty and Doc?
00:47Suggesting that people would maybe find this inappropriate.
00:49I mean, sure. I guess the premise that an elderly scientist who lives in a garage behind a Burger King
00:54has a platonic teen buddy who he hangs out with and occasionally lures into shopping mall parking lots
00:58in the middle of the night is a little odd.
01:00I mean, John Mulaney actually has an entire bit about it.
01:03Is a 17-year-old high school student whose best friend is a disgraced nuclear physicist.
01:11And I s*** you not, they never explain how they became friends.
01:16They never explain it. There's not even in a lazy way like,
01:20Hey, remember when we met in the science building? Like, they don't even do that.
01:22And we were all fine with it. We were just like,
01:26What? Who's his best friend? A disgraced nuclear physicist.
01:29All right, proceed.
01:30And sure, the stuff about Marty nearly hooking up with his own mother multiple times
01:34might also raise some eyebrows today.
