Matthew 17:22-27 reveals Jesus foretelling His Passion and a humble lesson through the temple tax. Enter this reverent reflection on freedom, charity, and giving no offense for the sake of love.

Jesus speaks of His death and rising on the third day. The disciples are greatly distressed. In Capernaum the collectors ask about the tax. The Lord teaches Peter that the true Son is free. Yet He chooses humility and charity. He provides a coin in a fish to meet the need. He avoids scandal and guides us to serve with prudence. Freedom yields to love. Faith trusts Providence in small and great matters. Pray with us through this passage. Ask for a heart that honors God and cares for others. Let worship shape daily choices. May our liberty become service. If this helped your prayer, kindly like, share, and subscribe for more scripture meditations.

00:00From the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 17, verses 22 to 27.
00:07As Jesus and his disciples were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them,
00:11The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.
00:19And they were overwhelmed with grief.
00:22When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said,
00:27Does not your teacher pay the temple tax?
00:30Yes, he said.
00:32When he came into the house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him,
00:38What is your opinion, Simon?
00:40From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax?
00:44From their subjects or from foreigners?
00:48When he said, From foreigners, Jesus said to him,
00:52Then the subjects are exempt.
00:55But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook,
00:59and take the first fish that comes up.
01:02Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax.
01:07Give that to them, for me and for you.
