Ollie Westbury gives his take on Shrewsbury Town's EFL Trophy defeat to Walsall.
Transcript
00:00Shrewsbury won Arsenal 3 here in the EFL Trophy.
00:06Myself and George have been watching for the Express and Star and the Shops and Star.
00:09George, what did you make of the events that have unfolded in a very rainy, wet crowd meadow this evening?
00:14Yeah, exactly that. You know, I think we can all agree that the EFL Trophy and especially the group stages
00:20aren't always the most exciting in terms of the spectacle, but I think it was a, you know,
00:26really well-contested game today and for the first hour, Shrewsbury definitely had the better of things
00:33and, you know, Walsall took the lead inside four minutes, carving Shrewsbury open.
00:37But the way Shrewsbury responded, going behind, got themselves leveled, you know, within five minutes.
00:44And there's so many chances really to put themselves in the lead at the bar twice.
00:49Sam Hornby was forced into a series of good saves.
00:53But once Walsall, you know, did go ahead for Albert Odoma, a poor pass across the defence,
01:00he was there to pounce, put it away really confidently for his 100th club career goal.
01:06They felt at Walsall had a bit between their teeth and, you know, it was kind of quite clear
01:10that there was only one team that was going to score the next goal.
01:13And I thought Gio Ducocchi come on for his debut, was superb, provided real pace and energy
01:18and took his goal really well, squeezing the ball beyond the Shrewsbury goalkeeper.
01:23And, yeah, that was, you know, a game set and match then.
01:25And, you know, with 11 changes, it was a really good exercise for Walsall.
01:28We've got some youngsters on the pitch.
01:30Stan Stroll was brilliant coming on for Priestley-Farkerson before the break.
01:34McLloyd-Obbin also came on, did really well, didn't look out of place in midfield.
01:38And then a few minutes at the end for Charlie Rags.
01:41So, yeah, you know, a good evening all round for Walsall.
01:44But, you know, you would have been disappointed from a Shrewsbury perspective,
01:47just purely in terms of the result, because it was a promising performance in the first hour.
01:51Yeah, Shrewsbury have kind of evolved a little bit.
01:54You know, they started the season not playing that well.
01:56And then over the last week or so, they've produced now four fairly decent performances.
02:02It was a disappointing first goal to concede.
02:04But I thought they bounced back really well, scored an excellent goal,
02:07one of the best goals that I've seen Shrewsbury score for quite a long time.
02:10The ball worked out wide to the left.
02:12Good crossing, good jump from the Davyton.
02:14Bradley, I'm not even going to begin to try and pronounce his surname.
02:17I need to get some clarity on how I pronounce his surname.
02:22But a really, really good header.
02:24Shrewsbury should have been out of sight probably at half-time.
02:28They had that many chances. I think they hit the bar twice.
02:30And then I thought they start, I think, probably agree with what you said,
02:35like up to 60 minutes, I think town played pretty well.
02:38But then it kind of feels like they play badly and they lose.
02:41They play well and they lose.
02:42And they've just got into this bit of a habit at the moment of managing to lose games of football
02:46that, you know, at times tonight you felt like Shrewsbury were really in the driving seat.
02:51But, I mean, I was talking to you in the press box and obviously I went to watch Warsaw play in the two playoff games,
03:00the two Chesterfield games at the end of last season.
03:02And it felt like I was watching the Matt Sadler team again tonight.
03:07As soon as they were given a sniff in that game, they were handed the 2-1 lead by mistake.
03:11And they were ruthless in kind of seeing the game out from that moment onwards.
03:16Salvatadoma, I mean, everybody knows what a good player he is.
03:21So, yeah, it ended up being probably in those last 25 minutes or 20 minutes,
03:27however long it was, ended up being a bit of a non-event as Warsaw managed the game really well, didn't they?
03:32Yeah, well, I think, you know, what you said there is the fact that probably the most positive sign for Warsaw
03:37was the fact that they're winning games in different ways.
03:39You know, for the first 40 minutes against Barnett, they swept them away.
03:42And then, you know, it's poor performance on the ball for the rest of that game.
03:46But they managed to, you know, dig their way to victory.
03:49Two really sort of solid and efficient performances over the back-to-back wins against Salford and MK Dons.
03:54Two very different types of games.
03:56So, you know, and then today, probably second best for the first hour.
04:00But, you know, they've still got that ruthless streak in front of Gold to get the win.
04:05So, I think that very much bodes well for Warsaw.
04:09And just an update on Priestley-Farcus.
04:12So, I spoke to Matt Sadler and he said, you know, he sort of was feeling his groin as he'd come off.
04:17Obviously, he had really bad, oh, and the lights come off just as we're finishing.
04:20But, yeah, you can still hear us.
04:22So, we'll continue.
04:23But, yeah, just Matt Sadler was optimistic on that one.
04:26Says he knows his body well, came off with a precaution.
04:28So, he's hopeful it's nothing too serious.
04:30And I think that's our cue to leave.
04:32All your reaction will be on the Shropshire Star and the Express and Star websites.
04:37So, let's say in advance.
04:38So, let's continue to buy the letter sözikis
04:42so we can take advantage.
04:43No jacket on doors maybe 2x8ANE, so we don't prokur.
04:45So, at least 248 0000 is called Zeus.
04:47So, let's keep on the luckyomial mind and freezes.
04:49But, yeah, I hope you will subscribe.
04:51Hopefully, that's good.
04:52So, it's so fast that we've got a day on.
04:53It's really interesting to kind ofuries on the social media standpoint.
04:55Quite widely in order to where we have a couple of young empathy athletes.
04:58And be very limited we're talking,
04:59and a little other to you.
05:00So, hopefully that's an update without hesitation.
05:01So, if we just a call it straight wire,
05:03so, we can then try and also take a couple of 60 at 13-1300.
