00:00Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03A well-known Chesterfield haberdashery store, which once received an order from fashion legend Vivian Westwood, is set to shut after over half a century.
00:13Fred's Haberdashery, an iconic shop on West Bars in Chesterfield, is closing down later this month, with September 27th set to be the store's last day of trading.
00:22Emily Lord and her husband Steve, the owners of Fred's Haberdashery, shared the sad news on an online statement.
00:28They said,
00:29After a lot of soul-searching and tough talks, we have decided to close the shop at the end of the month.
00:34Unfortunately, the trading conditions in the shop over the last 12 months, coupled with rising product and overhead costs, have meant it is no longer viable to run the bricks-and-mortar shop.
00:44Thank you to all the customers who have supported us during our time with Fred's. We truly appreciate you.
00:49We hope to see you in the shop soon to say goodbye, and that you can make some last-minute purchases before it all goes for good.
00:54Fred's Haberdashery was first launched at Chesterfield Market in 1973, before moving to a small shop in the Market Hall.
01:03The iconic store then relocated to its current premises on West Bars.
01:07The business was set to close in 2020, but Emily, a mum of five, who had worked part-time at Fred's, decided to step in and take on the store to save it.
01:15In recent years, the store not only offered a wide range of sewing products and fabrics, but also ran popular sewing classes, including swing, stitching and crocheting.
01:25The shop's fame extended well beyond Chesterfield's border, with the Haberdashery receiving an online order for a pair of embroidery scissors from Vivian Westwood,
01:33and being approached by Materials Firebrand film crew, who were filming in Derbyshire in the summer of 2022.
01:38Chesterfield's junior European school greets champion, Cooper Wallace, earned his wings as a judge in a new competition held in the seaside town of Western Supermare.
01:50His mum, Lauren Wallace, from Newbold, said,
01:52Cooper had a fabulous time. He loved being a judge and received a beautiful picture made by a local artist.
01:58The junior winner was a three-year-old boy, and the adult winner was a man from Western Supermare.
02:02Cooper is a two-times junior European gold switch champion, scooping gold medals in 2024 and 2025 at the popular event at the Belgian coastal town of Dupin.
02:13His little sister, Shelby, made her debut in the European competition this year and was placed fourth.
